LOOK OUT TOP CHEF! THESE SENIORS ARE THE REAL FOOD STARS THE TASTE AND SMELL OF FOOD can have powerful meaning for seniors. Cooking and eating trigger memories, strengthen connections with others and provide cognitive and physical stimulation. And that’s a recipe for enriching activity at United Hebrew of New Rochelle. At United Hebrew’s skilled nursing home, residents chop, slice and dice ingredients, assist in cooking, and enjoy a communal meal followed by dessert during a monthly cooking club. Taco bar anyone? Garlic chicken? You bet! Led by Udo Schneider, Chef and Director of Food and Nutrition Services, and Carrie Deppong, Director of Therapeutic Recreation, the sessions are, well, sizzling. “Once the smells and sounds of cooking fill the air, everyone comes alive,” says Deppong. “It’s just magical.“ PASTA SPARKS MEMORIES — AND OH, THE SCONES! At United Hebrew’s Willow Towers Assisted Living, Executive Chef David Shakin
leads cooking activities. There, residents knead dough for scones, operate the pastamaking machine and prepare holiday desserts. Cooking sparks conversations about family recipes from the past, best meals ever had and favorite people to cook for. “Food brings people together; it sparks memories and starts conversations,” says Shakin, who trained at the Culinary Institute of America. “It helps our seniors reminisce about their past and it stimulates their senses.” Food is connected with intense emotions and feelings of love, enjoyment, family and holidays, notes Deppong. “Cooking offers an opportunity for our residents to connect, to get creative and feel independent.” COOKING UP COMPANIONSHIP Several research studies have shown a strong correlation between social interaction and health and well-being among older adults. Whereas social isolation may have significant adverse effects for older adults, staying socially active has been
linked to better cognitive function, good emotional health, better physical health and increased longevity. United Hebrew of New Rochelle designs its activity programs to have an enriching effect on all who participate, according to Rita Mabli, United Hebrew’s president/CEO.
“Cooking is just one of the many therapeutic activities offered to seniors in our nursing home, assisted living and memory care communities,” she notes. “Our residents enjoy an array of recreational, cultural and social activities, all designed to make life more enjoyable.” In addition to cooking, residents may partake in music and dance therapy, exercise classes, current events discussions, entertainment, cards, board and “brain” games, live music, art classes, history lectures, book clubs and much, much more. “We know that the benefits of staying socially active and engaged will last far into the future for our residents,” says Mabli. “Through our activities, residents make friends. They bond. They stay connected to others. That helps them feel a sense of purpose and a true sense of belonging. And that’s our goal.” Learn more about United Hebrew of New Rochelle’s campus. FROM GILDED AGE TO GOLDEN YEARS: THE CLUB AT BRIARCLIFF MANOR IS MAKING HISTORY AGAIN NEW YORK SENIORS
and beyond will soon have a glimpse into the splendor of the Gilded Age; enjoying the luxurious amenities and top-tier service from The Club at Briarcliff Manor, a world-class senior living community opening on the shores of the Hudson River in mid-summer 2019. When locals think of Briarcliff Lodge, it may conjure up images of opulent dinners, long weekends and New York’s elite enjoying the sunshine, a warm breeze and the good life on the banks of the Hudson River. The tradition of excellence continues here at The Club at Briarcliff Manor, an unparalleled community built with intention on the prior site of the Lodge, paying homage to its historic roots while creating its own place in history. The Club at Briarcliff Manor offers sophisticated and carefree lifestyles tailored to today’s modern seniors — perfectly combined with an air of old-world elegance and refinement worthy of its legendary location. “We are so excited to remake history and open our doors to this community. Our vision for the property has been realized so beautifully — and we know that our residents will be impressed each day by the attention to detail and exemplary service we provide,“ said John Muzio, Executive Director of The Club at Briarcliff Manor. Built on a breathtaking, 59-acre wooded estate, The Club at Briarcliff Manor was designed in an updated Tudor-style that mirrors the historic lodge, but steps fully into the modern era with fresh, stylish décor and upscale finishes that will impress. Residents will enjoy the numerous outdoor terraces and gardens, or picturesque views of the Hudson from their own residences. Further taking advantage of the unmatched location, The Club at Briarcliff Manor’s architecture and design is focused on highlighting the area’s natural beauty; letting residents take in the abundant scenery while also enjoying their time inside the community. Most notably, the community’s top floor hosts “The View,” a glass observation room with a full 360-degree panorama of The Club’s surroundings and on bluebird days, an unobscured view of the New York skyline. Residents have multiple floor-plan options, including one-and two-bedroom apartment homes, and the upscale finishes include full-size kitchens, granite countertops and ceramic tiled bathrooms. The apartments are bright,
with many facing the river or looking out over the verdant canopy that encircles the buildings. The community’s other amenities truly go the extra mile with valet parking, fitness studios, lush outdoor spaces, card rooms and multiple dining venues intended to rival any five-star restaurant experience. “We wanted every meal to feel special — because it should be,” said Dining Director James Cirillo of The Club at Briarcliff Manor. “We designed each of our dining venues to defy expectations through menus that excite, service that impresses and most importantly the ability to give our residents the freedom to choose where, when and what they eat. Everyday.” Two of the most notable dining venues sure to become residents’ favorites are Rockefeller’s and the Oak Room. Rockefeller’s is a bistro and bar that will serve light and traditional fare in a casual atmosphere; easily becoming the go-to place to grab lunch, watch the game, or gather for happy hour. The Oak Room is The Club at Briarcliff Manor’s more formal dining venue with an elegant atmosphere, modern aesthetic and an
upscale menu that will delight even the most discriminating taste buds. While The Club understands that delicious food is essential (even employing an onsite chef and experienced culinary team), the community also aims to make every part of the experience just as unique. “We know that a dining experience is just that — an experience. We will be catering to every sense through our ambiance, service, hospitality and of course our incredible dishes, said Dining Director, James Cirillo of The Club at Briarcliff Manor. This remarkable senior living community will boast over 200 resident apartment homes and offer three different senior lifestyles: Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care. Seniors searching for a modern lifestyle and innovative programs won’t need to look any further than this community that has truly thought of it all. “We set the bar high for our residents’ daily lifestyles and are going to deliver through educational opportunities, creative programs and special events that fit with the educated, worldly and active residents that will be calling our community home,” John
Muzio said while also mentioning there would be an array of fitness and recreation opportunities to keep every resident active and engaged no matter their age or ability. Also catering to seniors’ individual needs, one of the best aspects of the community is the option to “age-inplace” with the community offering a full continuum of care. From daily tidyingup, weekly housekeeping, and meal plans in the independent living lifestyle to personal care, fall prevention and 24hour nursing care in assisted living — each resident’s individual plan will cater to their personal needs. The staffs’ level of involvement in daily life then can evolve with seniors as their abilities change. The goal is to maintain as much independence and comfort as possible while remaining cognizant of the safety of the resident. The forward-thinking programming and state-of-the-art environment of The Club at Briarcliff Manor help create an atmosphere where that goal can be easily achieved. The community is especially excited to bring the awarding-winning embrace Memory Care program to the Briarcliff Manor community. This program uses research-based methods to help residents living with dementia and Alzheimer’s to enjoy more moments of joy, choice and connection each day. Through specialized programs, residents can find new pathways to old passions like art, reading and music. One of the most popular programs helps friends and family connect by finding new ways to reaffirm bonds — making visits easier and more meaningful. “It’s important to us that we take care of our residents and their families,” said John Muzio, Executive Director. “We take communication seriously and use new technologies to keep families wellinformed and involved in their loved one’s life.” The community will also offer respite stays for local families that are looking for similar help and support. The Club at The Briarcliff Manor is a senior community looking to redefine senior living and forge a proud history of its own in a storied location. Every part of the community has been built with an intention to provide exemplary service and care in surroundings that make each day better than the next. This historic property has seen its share of bright, beautiful days and its staff is dedicated to creating a community that will make each day shine for every resident for many years to come.

THE BASICS OF HOSPICE CARE By Anthony J. Enea
THE DECISION AS TO WHETHER ONE SHOULD BEGIN receiving hospice benefits is often an emotionally draining and difficult decision, not only for the person needing hospice care but for their family. It is sadly the realization that one’s life may soon be ending and that the attempts of curing the person’s illness have been unsuccessful. Hospice is a program of care for people who are terminally ill and have been diagnosed with a life expectancy of six (6) months or less. The focus of the hospice care shifts from curing the individual to palliative care (keeping the person comfortable). The palliative care component is both for the terminally ill person and his or her family. The physical, emotional and spiritual care needs of the patient and family are now the focus. In most instances, hospice care is provided at home, however, if it cannot be provided at home there are in-patient facilities, which specifically provide hospice care. For example, Calvary Hospital in the Bronx and Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne are in-patient facilities dedicated to hospice care. Medicare will cover hospice care at the aforementioned types of in-patient hospice facilities. However, if one decides to receive hospice care at a nursing home or another nonhospice facility it may be necessary that the patient apply for and obtain Medicaid or pay privately for room and board at the nonhospice facility. Once the patient has been certified for hospice by his or her doctors, is willing to accept palliative care and forego any attempts to cure the illness and executes a statement choosing hospice care, the hospice care will commence. Unlike long-term nursing home care, the vast majority of hospice care benefits are paid for by Medicare. Medicare hospice benefits cover the care for the terminal illness and any related conditions. Once one is eligible for hospice care, Medicare hospice benefits should cover everything one needs related to the terminal illness (except treatment), even if one remains in a Medicare Advantage Plan or other Medicare health plan. Once the hospice benefits have commenced one can still get covered services that are not related to one’s terminal illness: original Medicare will cover the services for any health problems that are not part of the terminal illness and related conditions, subject to the patient being responsible for paying all deductibles and coinsurance amounts. The hospice provider selected by the patient for the in-home care will coordinate a care plan for the terminally ill patient with the patient and his or her family. The care team will include a hospice nurse and a doctor who is on call 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The patient
can also include his or her regular doctor, a nurse practitioner or a physician’s assistant as part of the medical team. Although hospice care is generally associated with terminally ill cancer patients, hospice care is provided for all terminal illnesses where the patient’s life expectancy is six (6) months or less. Once hospice benefits have commenced Medicare will no longer cover the following: (A) Treatments intended to cure the terminal illness and related conditions; (B) Prescription drugs (except for symptom control or pain management); (C) Care from a provider that was not arranged by the hospice medical team; (D) Generally, room and board are not covered, unless it is a hospice facility or if the hospice team determines the patient needs short-term in-patient respite care services
(when the usual caregiver needs rest inpatient respite care can be provided in a Medicare approved facility, hospital or nursing home). Once on hospice care, the patient will continue to pay the Medicare monthly Part A premium and Part B premiums, a co-payment of up to five ($5) dollars per prescription for outpatient prescription drugs for pain and symptoms management and five (5%) percent of the Medicare approved amount for inpatient respite care. As can be seen from the above, obtaining hospice care at home or at an in-patient facility requires that a number of different factors be both present and satisfied before the Medicare approved hospice benefits will be available. Virtually all services need to be first coordinated and approved by the hospice care provider selected. *Anthony J. Enea, Esq. is a member of the

DISCHARGE PLANNING FOR SAFE TRANSITION TO HOME CARE WITH WESTCHESTER FAMILY CARE ENSURING SAFE CARE while
transitioning back to home from the hospital or rehab is vital to prevent a return to the hospital. The leading causes of hospital readmission for seniors are falling, not taking their medications and missing follow-up medical appointments. To give your loved one support to help them heal at home and avoid rehospitalization, we’ve created a 7- to 10-day discharge plan for a safe transition to home care. Seniors require assistance to ensure they have a smooth transition from the hospital to recuperation at home.
WE OFFER: • Customizable care options: Choose between two care packages to meet your needs.
• A live-in aide who provides 24/7 support. • A daytime aide to assist while family caregivers are away. • Certified aides: Our caregivers are New York state HHA certified and supervised by registered nurses to assist those with diabetes, heart failure, pulmonary disease, mobility and dementia. • Personal care: Services include bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, light housekeeping, meal preparation, manicures, pedicures and haircuts. • Fast service: Our planning for start of services begins a week before your loved one arrives home with an RN assessment in the facility. We also partner with Medicare-certified providers to
provide any home care hours covered by Medicare with the same caregiver. • Home inspection: We’ll evaluate the home to ensure it is clutter free and has the necessary safety equipment installed in high-risk areas of the home. Contact us a week before your loved one is ready to come home. We’ll work with you to create a 7- to 10-day discharge plan that meets your needs, whether it’s 24/7 care or a daytime caregiver. WE WILL WORK WITH YOU TO: • Match your loved one with a caregiver, who can also attend a PT session before discharge. • Ensure transportation services are put in place for follow-up appointments.
• Ensure any prescriptions are filled with reminders to take medications at the correct times. • Provide 7 to 10 days of care during the period of highest risk for readmission, OUR FAMILY CARING FOR YOUR FAMILY We are in the business of providing you or your loved one with the respectful and attentive home care needed to remain independent at home and avoid rehospitalization. EMPLOYED VETERANS WORKSITE WELLNESS AT FIRST APPROACH EA WORKSITE WELLNESS (FAEAWW), we believe worksite wellness employee engagement is the best way for every employee who is a veteran to enjoy having a better quality of life. These employees must have a traumatic event support plan and at the same time, access to a variety of solution options that are tools to prevent homelessness. The educational process for this program must be made available to all employees at costeffective fees employers can afford. Careful diligence is important as the Federal Trade Commission reports actors and scammers target employed veterans and small business. The Consumer Protection Bureau along with AARP have produced a number of resources for consumers to review. First Approach EA and its partners also have costeffective options in curtailing these attacks. Partner with us as we promote productivity
and greater economic value via worksite wellness in four different ways: • Employer-based — Innovation at FAEAWW is originality, innovation, creativity and change. Wellness Advocacy Non- VA Emergency Care Coaching Case Management; • Worksite Wellness Kit ( hands-on health and fraud prevention educational ); • Teladoc Health • Financial Wellness, consult with our CPA partner. Employee engagement, worksite wellness in today work environment are a must for small and large companies. Companies with more than 500 employees often can budget a plan or program. These companies can hire wellness managers or assign a team member from the human resources department to undertake and promote a wellness plan. Years ago this was done as an optional approach to producing a healthy
James Jenkins Jr.
workforce. There were privacy issues, for employers would have a good idea who was using the wellness plan, which could affect managing employees who must be held accountable and empowered. First Approach EA Worksite Wellness, Pick A Veteran to Treat on Facebook has developed a unique set of services by partnering with Teladoc Health, American Institute for Preventive Medicine and providing health and financial services that can address the many challenges employees face. Don’t take my word for it. Have your managers conduct the reach on the internet. One last point my background as AFGE Employee Assistance manager, NYSOASAS counselor along with the Department of Veterans Affairs has given me a real understanding of problems at the worksite. Let us earn your trust. James Jenkins Jr.
