Letter from the Publisher Welcome to the inaugural Besties issue.

When Laura Snyder, our fabulous chief operations officer, first told me about her idea for this award that would spotlight businesses and individuals who strive to be the best at what they do, my curiosity was piqued. As time went on, we launched the ballot and it became apparent that the community delighted in the opportunity to engage in the voting process. Now, we have the pleasure of revealing the winners in each category.

Through hard work and perseverance, these individuals rise to the top of their area of expertise with great success. Thank you to those of you who took the time to vote and let your voice be heard.

December conjures up images of twinkling lights and a peaceful snowfall covering our beautiful city and countryside in a blanket of white. is the season for engagements. As the holidays approach, professionals in the wedding industry arebusy gearing up for the spring wedding season, which begins deep in winter’s cold.

Planning for brides starts the minute they answer “yes” to the big question, and in the eyes of wedding professionals, that’s not a minute too soon.

Locations, wedding attire, flowers and more all take months to reserve, order and plan, and the savvy bride fills her calendar quickly. Style mavens like the editors of British Vogue have already weighed in on 2020 trends, and American designers and buyers agree wholeheartedly.

The look? According to British Vogue, it’s all about a new decade and a new look.

Brides are encouraged to choose their own adventure and not necessarily follow the traditional rules of wedding planning.

As local wedding professionals return from market and prep for 2020, specific trends are rising for the coming year.

While high glamour is a focus, soft colors and earthy tones are creating the palette for spring.

“At the top of my list is sleeves,” said Laurie Robertson, owner of The Bridal Suite of Louisville.

“Sleeves could be seen in every designer’s collections – from long-sleeved to off-theshoulder to three-quarter-length sleeves.

Brides asked and our designers listened.”

While strapless gowns have been the rage for several years, the sleeve is ready for a renaissance. “We’re not talking about your mother’s long sleeves,” said Robertson. “We’re talking about sophisticated sexiness – sleeves that drape off the décolletage creating an incredible portrait neckline and sleeves made of beaded, illusion lace extending down to below the wrist.”

The quality of the lace is key as well. “Lace evokes images of vintage wedding dresses from years past. This season’s interpretations of the classics are no exception,” explained Robertson.

“We are seeing an incredible influx of some of the most exquisite laces we’ve seen in decades, from oversized floral patterns DECEMBER 2019

While minimalism is still popular, all that glitters is still knocking at the church door. “Many designers showcased a range of glittering beauties, from striking to subtle,” said Robertson. “The one feature that stood out prominently was the layering of sparkle tulle. Designers have taken to adding a layer of sparkling tulles or sequined silks and strategically placing them under the outer layer of lace, thus creating a shimmering effect as the bride moves.”

That sparkle translates to bridal jewelry, said Brian Merkley, president of Merkley Kendrick Jewelers. “We are seeing more interest in fancy-cut diamonds, like cushion-cut diamonds,” he said. “Round diamonds are still the favorite and most traditional of the shapes because round diamonds sparkle more than any of the other shapes. In my eyes, when I think of diamonds, I think of brilliance and sparkle and light dancing. That’s what you get with round stones.”

Traditional solitaire engagement rings are back in style but with a contemporary spin. “Super ultra-thin bands are popular, as is styling on the shoulders with patterns of smaller diamonds or colored gems,” Merkley said. “I’m seeing yellow and rose gold return along with different finishes like brushing, edging and engraving, and certainly, vintage style is a strong influence.”

Merkley admits to watching awards shows not for the stars but for the jewelry designs. “I don’t know any of the stars on the screen, but I know their jewelry,” he laughed.

“When I started in this business, if your engagement set was yellow gold, you wore yellow gold for everything,” he added. “Now, everyone likes their to cameo-shaped embroidery to burnout jacquards. Designers are pushing the envelope further than ever, layering multiple types of lace to create a multi-dimensional visual effect.”

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, popularized high glamour and minimalism in her stunning wedding gown, which became prominent in the past couple of years. Robertson noted that designers at market were showing luxurious Mikado silk, crepe and matte satin fabrics in every designer collection, many with creative cutouts in the fabric. The minimalistic silhouette is well-suited for fit-and-flare and A-line gowns.

jewelry to be customized to themselves. It’s all about the individual, and all the fashion rules are out the window.”

Showing love not only for your sweetie but also for the environment is a factor as many couples plan for more natural and sustainable weddings. Amy Streeter, owner of Susan’s Florist, notes many brides are looking for a natural and organic design. “Bouquets used to consist of one focal flower, and that bouquet would be 90 percent roses with a collar of greens,” said Streeter. “Now, a bouquet may have four roses, two hydrangeas, three bells of Ireland, two Veronica, ranunculus and much more.”

Jessie Smith, lead wedding designer at Susan’s Florist, added, “A lot of brides like the wild and free design. Bells out to the left and a snapdragon swinging out to the right, with a few garden roses or dahlias tucked in tight as a focal point. It is much more random, but we consider it beautiful chaos.”

The top five wedding color schemes for 2020 are neo-mint, purist blue, cassis (a deeper blend of purple and pink), cantaloupe and mellow yellow, said Streeter. In addition to the soft, muted tones, couples are turning to herbs as well, including lavender, sage, rosemary and eucalyptus.

Feeling rebellious? There’s something for the adventurous bride, too. White, embellished tuxedos – for the bride – and bouquets of all green foliage and ornamental grasses might be your choice. “For the bride who isn’t afraid to take a fashion risk and have a little fun, feathers add a delicate and feminine touch to many of the gowns we saw at market,” said Robertson.

Rising from the Ashes An elegant residence where old meets new

rand new homes have their perks, but older homes have an irreplaceable character. For one couple, their home nestled off of Brownsboro Road offers the best of both.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a 2-and-a-half-year-old chocolate lab named Stella. The homeowners chose not to share their identities in this article, but that matters little since Stella made it clear that she is the true lady of the house.

The original building is 90 years old and housed several families in that time. Its charming stone edifice evokes images of a European chalet wrapped in bucolic trees and shrubs, yet the 5,200-square-foot home sits just minutes from downtown Louisville.

In 1993, a catastrophic fire destroyed much of the original structure, and according to the current owners, the wreckage sat abandoned for quite some time before being rebuilt.

The current owners purchased the home in 2015 and made several design upgrades to the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms. They worked with designer Meg Vogt, who repurposed many items they already owned into the new space. Drapes from their previous home were turned into a headboard and bed skirt, and the original kitchen counters were repurposed for the outdoor kitchen.

The new kitchen countertops are made of a dazzling Cambria quartz, which has the look and durability of marble but is much easier to clean and maintain. The dynamic, spacious and updated kitchen is adjacent to a family room featuring a warm color palette that balances well with the kitchen’s bright white hues.

Symmetry matched with unique angles can be found throughout the house, lending to its charm.

The formal living room’s high ceilings are accented by curved arches. These were transformed from older square beams by Jason Smothers of CWR Contractors, who worked closely with the owners during the renovations. Light fills the room from large windows and comfortable, classic design welcomes the weary into its relaxed atmosphere.

Bookcases abound throughout the house, from the living areas into bedrooms and reading nooks that are a reader’s dream. Significant artworks throughout the house – found by the couple during their travels – add touches of imaginative color and character.

The courtyard at the front of the home is a cherished space for Stella and her human parents.

The nook features a sweeping view of the yard but its distance from the street allows for privacy. In the backyard you will find a pool with a water fall feature, a covered pool house, a fire pit and several seating options. Even in frigid temperatures, Stella’s favorite pastime is swimming. Thankfully, the pool house’s seating area is equipped with a heater, so her family can watch her dive even when the weather cools down.

The home’s modern elements combined with its traditional charm are the perfect mix to make it the ideal place for Stella and her family to relax, swim and enjoy each other’s company. V

Voting for the Besties opened on our website in September and with the assistance of a third-party company, we tallied thousands of responses to give you this: the first-ever Bestie Awards.

If you took the time to vote, you may notice several categories from the original ballot do not appear in these pages or a category does not list a runner up. Those particular categories – which included Best Lawyer, Best Doctor, Best Visual Artist and others – did not receive a sufficient number of votes to declare a clear winner.

Longtime Voice readers may recall voting for Best Dressed in an annual competition hosted by the magazine in the early 2000s, so we couldn’t resist including that category in the lineup. See page 60 to get a closer look at winners Jude Redfield and Vicki Dortch.

or many years, The Voice of Louisville hosted a massive fashion event and competition centered around Louisville’s best dressed couples and individuals.

While the event no longer takes place, we couldn’t resist including Best Dressed as a category in the inaugural Bestie Awards.

The readers have spoken and selected Vicki Dortch as Best Dressed Woman and Jude Redfield as Best Dressed Man. Both winners can be seen regularly on television – Dortch is an anchor at WLKY and Redfield is a meteorologist at WDRB – so it’s no wonder their looks caught the attention of our readers. Congratulations to Vicki and Jude!

B D W On communicating with clothing: “I let my clothes speak for themselves,” Dortch explains. “You always think of who you’re interviewing and what the situation is and match your clothes to that. ... I like something that has a great fabric and a great cut because on television, it’s difficult to wear accessories.”

On the love of footwear: “If I’m not wearing jewelry, I get to have fun with shoes,” she says. “That’s where you can add a bright color or something different. Nothing is ever comfortable because I stand to do the news, but shoes are a lot of fun.”

ince 2013, L A Surety Solutions has served the bond needs of hundreds of individuals and companies. The agency was started by President Todd Loehnert and Senior Partner Brian Ayres, who left jobs at a large company with the vision of creating a small business with a big impact.

“We like the fact that we’re kind of the anomaly,” says Loehnert. “Most of the people in our industry are big regional or national agencies.

We’re completely locally owned and operated.”

For those who are unfamiliar with surety bonds, a surety bond involves three parties: the principal performs the project, the obligee is the owner of the project and the surety ensures the completion and payment. Loehnert explains, “Surety bonds work as a prequalification tool to protect owners, lenders and taxpayers from potential contractor default and labor and material payment issues.”

“A lot of what we do here is assist clients in building and maintaining a successful business,” explains Michael Baxter, a Junior Partner who joined the firm in 2018. “We’re not too big to go out on a daily basis and hand-deliver a bond to the folks here in our local area. That’s definitely something that sets us apart.”

In addition to working with contractors and other building professionals, L A Surety handles court and commercial bonds which include self-insured workers compensation bonds, Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) bonds,

supply bonds, as well as many other license and compliance bonds. By having a diverse set of services, the company can handle small or large matters for individuals, massive corporations and everyone in between.

“When Todd and I started the business, we wanted to make it more about the client,” says Ayres. “In the corporate world, that environment is all about doing more, but more is not always good. Actually, having a personal connection with your clients and also with your employees and giving back to them, that’s big.”

Working alongside the trio are bond account managers, Monica Kaiser and Paula Teague, and marketing manager, Madison M. Haller. Though their reach is extensive, their priority is taking care of local clients and impacting the community in which they live. Kosair Charities HELPING CHILDREN REACH THEIR POTENTIAL

P

resident Keith Inman says it’s hard to gauge just how many kids have benefited from the work of Kosair Charities. “It’s hard to put a number on that,” he says. “But it’s in the millions.”

For nearly 100 years, Kosair Charities has had a single mission: to help children reach their full potential.

In 1923, Kosair Shrine Temple, along with University of Louisville Physician Dr. W. Barnett Owen, purchased six acres of land on Eastern Parkway. Three years later, the first 10 patients were admitted into a facility specializing in the care of children. “The scourge of the day was polio and some really nasty orthopedic issues and infections, diseases, things like that,” Inman says.

The facility on Eastern Parkway continued to provide direct healthcare services to local children for nearly 60 years until 1981, when the facility on Eastern Parkway consolidated with what is now Norton Children’s Hospital. “We’re not a direct provider of any services any longer,” Inman says. “We leave that to the healthcare folks and the people who do a great job.

We focus on helping organizations help our kids.”

Now, Kosair Charities focuses on providing grants to organizations that help children reach their full potential, whether that be through education, healthcare research, social services or advocacy for the children. They also aid families who need financial help with healthcare needs through the Kosair Kids

Financial Assistance Program. Inman says the charity focuses on both big and small organizations. “Some of the organizations we fund will help a few kids and some help thousands of kids,” he says.

In 2013, Kosair Charities founded the Face It Movement to raise awareness of Kentucky’s widespread issue of child abuse and neglect. “Kentucky ranks number one nationally for incidences of abuse and neglect,” Inman says. “Indiana is number two. Our numbers are really just off the charts.” The Face It Movement focuses on three major areas: promoting best practices in prevention and intervention, advocating for effective policy changes and engaging the community.

After working tirelessly for six years, the Kosair Charities Face It Movement has united more than 100 partner organizations around the state and has helped to enact 10 law changes that protect children affected by abuse or neglect, such as a law to create a bill of rights for foster children.

Kosair Charities now hosts its main offices in the original Eastern Parkway medical facility. It is the largest charity for children in Kentucky and Southern Indiana and will continue to help children in any way it can.

“We have more that we have to do,” Inman says. “I think the big thing is we are helping kids to reach their full potential and overcome some significant obstacles.” To learn more and support these efforts, visit kosair.org/donate.

ouisville enjoys a wealth of arts and entertainment options that are richly breathtaking. Choosing the best of the lot is no easy task.

When the Speed Art Museum reopened to the public in 2016 following a three-year closure for renovation and expansion, visitors were amazed at the transformation. The Speed created an atmosphere of “art for all” and included events, community conversations, unique and thought-provoking exhibitions, family programming and more. Louisvillians responded with wild enthusiasm and it is no surprise that the Speed claimed a Bestie for Best Museum.

“The Speed takes a lot of pride in being one of many organizations bringing great art to Louisville, a city with such a rich cultural history,” said Steven Bowling, chief marketing officer at the Speed Art Museum. “Our mission is to invite everyone to celebrate art forever.

Knowing that people in the community not only want to celebrate with us but celebrate the museum itself is a huge honor.”

Capping off a busy 2019, “Tales from the Turf: The Kentucky Horse,” recently opened at the Speed. The exhibition takes a comprehensive look at the horse industry in Kentucky from 1825 – 1950. Most of the art is on loan from private collections across the state and has never been displayed together in one location. In December, the Speed opens “Loose Nuts: Bert Hurley’s West End Story,” which explores a fully handwritten and illustrated manuscript by Louisville artist Bert Hurley. It examines the history of life in Louisville’s African-American communities during the 1930s, when industry and entertainment in the West End thrived.

“We believe in the power of art to transform people’s lives, and we’re inspired by that belief to make the Speed a place where everyone feels like they belong,” said Bowling.

with perennial favorite, “Dracula.” The always-enthralling production taps the audience’s deepest fears and celebrates the Halloween season like no other performance in Louisville. “The recognition and appreciation from the Louisville community truly means so much to us,” said Artistic Director Robert Barry Fleming. “‘Dracula’ has been haunting Louisville for nearly 30 years, and everyone who works on that production is so very proud to be part of the tradition.”

In the eclectic and growing art gallery scene in Louisville, M.A.D.S Gallery on Bardstown Road stands out with a Bestie for its focus on the blend of art and event space it offers. M.A.D.S (Modern. Art. Design.

Style) has never been just one thing, said owner Madison Ewing. What began as a spot to feature local artists quickly turned into a collaborative community venture – offering classes, lectures, events and networking space.

“We are so humbled that with all the great places in the city, M.A.D.S has left such an impression on visitors that when asked their opinion, they remembered their experience – whether it was through a private event, casual stroll or collaborative dance night,” said Ewing.

In 2020, M.A.D.S will continue a partnership with dance studio Bourbon Tango to offer a unique visual and interactive experience – presenting various classical dance events and classes. “Our schedule largely features Bourbon Tango mixed with all the great local art M.A.D.S Gallery showcases,” said Ewing.

native, My Morning Jacket front man and solo artist Jim James for a collaborative album and performance called “The Order of Nature.” The album features songs written

by James and symphonic suites composed by Abrams.

“We decided that we would be super creative with the settings of every single one of the songs,” said Abrams. “It was more of an aria, like a set of songs that you might find an operatic singer singing, as opposed to a rock band out in front with the orchestra just playing long notes to fill out the chords.”

Abrams was thrilled with the enthusiastic national response to the album. “I think this is going to be a big part of the orchestra’s history,” he added. “We want to share that (music) because we think that’s a positive American story right now, and it’s important that it’s told.”

Finally, it wouldn’t be the holidays in Louisville without the Bestie winner for Best Dance Performance, which goes to the Louisville Ballet for its “Nutcracker” holiday spectacular. “The Brown-Forman Nutcracker” opens on Dec. 14 and runs through Dec. 22 with a limited run this year, and the ballet expects tickets to sell quickly.

“We pride ourselves on reflecting our community and telling their stories, and having our community support us means that we are on the right track,” said Robert Curran, artistic and executive director of the Louisville Ballet. “It is an honor to do the work we do, and as the only ballet company in Louisville, we have the responsibility and opportunity to bring as much varied dance as possible to our community. We get to celebrate and honor the tradition of classical ballet, but we also reinvent it through contemporary dance. Louisville Ballet cherishes the collaborative and creative process that brings artists from all disciplines together to share our stories in a place where everybody is welcome.”

or many of us, the beginning of December means figuring out how to maintain your fitness program through the holiday season. Clients constantly ask, “How will I find time for my work-out?” Let’s face it: you have worked hard all year and need to make a plan to get through this amazing time of the year. By keeping one foot in the gym, let’s combat some of the damage done as you eat, drink and make holiday memories.

Maintain the level of fitness you’re at and feel less afraid about getting back to it come January.

1. Commit to working out early, and put it on your schedule. Any form of exercise – whether it’s walking, running, lifting weights, yoga or Pilates – can help relieve stress during this demanding time of year, so just get it done.

2. You don’t need to spend hours at the gym. Make it a quick workout. Even if it’s only 30 minutes, at least you did something.

3. Try to make a schedule you can stick to. If you can’t hit the gym five days a week, then make it three.

4. Make this a time to maintain, not advance, your training.

5. Set (realistic) fitness goals for the new year. This is a great time to train with a friend or family member so you’re held accountable.

ith a college degree, eight years of work experience and a full-time job as a middle school social studies teacher, Jamie Smith is quite accomplished for a 22-year-old. Jamie had such a positive experience that she continued to work for Class Act through her senior year of high school and after graduation. “I practically grew up at the credit union,” Jamie said. She enjoyed building relationships with Class Act’s members and her co-workers. “You’re really working with family,” she remarked.

Jamie also acknowledges that her experience working for Class Act has opened a lot of doors for her. She was able to network and meet many people in the education community, which was helpful in her pursuit of becoming a teacher. She has also gained knowledge about financial literacy that she hopes to bring to her classroom.

Jamie left Class Act briefly to focus on her teaching degree, but when her former manager asked her to come back, she happily agreed to continue to work on weekends in addition to teaching. “I was heartbroken a little bit,” Jamie said about leaving. She missed seeing the members and her peers. In fact, Jamie believes that the connection she’s developed with Class Act’s members is what sets it apart from other financial institutions. “I know everyone I work with goes above and beyond to help the members around us. We’re not just bank tellers – we’re like friends and family there to support you.”

I

n the Inaugural Bestie Awards, Voice readers voted Brasserie Provence as Best Dinner Spot and the restaurant’s Patrick Gosden as Best Chef. In a city exploding with first-class dining options and celebrated chefs, I consider this is a remarkable feat.

Until recently, I had never dined at Brasserie Provence, but when I learned that the establishment had won two coveted Besties, I had to experience it for myself.

After spending an afternoon with co-owners Guy Genoud and Stacy Duncan and Chef Gosden, I understood what the hype was about.

Husband and wife team Genoud and Duncan opened Brasserie Provence six years ago. Genoud, a native of Southern France, worked in hospitality for many years before opening a place of his own.

“I was always in the food and beverage aspects of hotels,” he said. “That’s what I’ve done all my life.”

When he first opened Brasserie Provence, he had a vision of delivering a sincere and uncompromised French experience. Menus were written in French, and Genoud’s team shied away from incorporating too many

Americanized dishes. As time went on, however, he took into account the more Midwestern palette of locals. Genoud and Chef Gosden – who utilize many of the recipes Genoud inherited from his mother and grandmother – have since found an ideal balance of French authenticity with southern comfort.

“We like the feel of a neighborhood bar,” Duncan says of the restaurant’s atmosphere.

“We want people to feel comfortable and confident that they’ll be well taken care of.”

“In the brasserie, it’s not formal,” he explains. “You’ll have a street worker and a lawyer side-by-side. It’s very diverse. …

There’s no dress code here because I think that puts a barrier between yourself and the customer.”

The word “brasserie” is French for brewery. While you won’t find brewing equipment in the space, Genoud and Duncan take the drink selections seriously. Eight to 10 times a year, the restaurant hosts wine dinners so guests can experience delectable French wines and tapas created by Chef Gosden.

“To make an investment in wine, you better like it,” Genoud relates. “It’s a way DECEMBER 2019

to teach people and offer them something they’ve never tasted before.”

While there, I was able to sample two entrees: the sea scallops persillade and the prime pork chop, both of which were mind-blowingly delicious. The scallops were the perfect texture and flavor. The pork chop had a lavender honey glaze that melted in my mouth and was accompanied by one of the tastiest potato dishes I’ve ever had, gratin dauphinois. Each bite was better than the last.

Chef Gosden, the creator of these edible masterpieces, studied at Sullivan University and cut his teeth at several local restaurants before joining Brasserie Provence five years ago.

“Stacy and Guy are two of the best owners I’ve ever worked for,” he says. “They bring a lot of love to it.”

Gosden is humbled by his Besties win, but his employers are not at all surprised that the community voted for him.

“It’s not just the passion that he brings to the food, but Patrick genuinely loves to nurture,” says Duncan. “It’s an extraordinary thing that he brings to the food. It really is love. It’s so sweet and lovely, and I think that

adds to the whole neighborhood/family feeling we try to put out there.”

“Patrick is hands-on and he cares,” says Genoud. “I think that’s what makes a great chef. He cares about what comes out of this like it’s his own business.”

When I asked the pair why they believed their restaurant has become such a success – aside from the talents of their chef – Duncan and Genoud each pointed at one another. Both give credit to the other for making the space what it is: an inviting home where guests are fed well and treated with kindness.

Genoud likens the spirit of Southern France to the Southern United States, matching the warmth people can expect when visiting Louisville.

“No matter what country you’re in, there’s a southern hospitality,” he says. “I welcome my guests as family members and friends. F

or the staff members of Symphony at Oaklawn, working with seniors goes beyond managing their dayto-day needs. In this community, residents receive individualized care and support services that allow them to feel at home.

One such individual who leads a happy life at the residence is 90-year-old Maxine Branham, who has lived there since Oct. 1, 2012. Maxine first learned about the facility when her late husband Bill needed care for Dementia and a broken hip. After his passing, she began experiencing mobility issues and decided to sell her house and move into Symphony at Oaklawn.

Since Maxine is mostly self-sufficient, she continues to do her own laundry, clean her own apartment and spends her days as she pleases.

“It’s a wonderful place to be,” she says.

“Everyone who works here is friendly, and if you need anything, they’ll be happy to do it for you.”

Thanks to Life Enrichment Director Carolyn Schumacher, occupants can experience outstanding social activities in addition to the attentive care. Happy hour takes place Monday through Friday and often features live music, allowing residents to socialize and be entertained before dinner. Residents also get to experience outings to the casino and Churchill Downs, where Maxine says they’re always welcomed on Millionaires Row. To accommodate different needs, Symphony at Oaklawn offers two different programs:

personal care and In the Moment® Memory Support. Personal care offers residents as much or as little help as they need – whether an individual is mostly independent or needs assistance around the clock. The memory support program features innovative Dementia care practices that offer a scheduled rhythm while embracing spontaneous moments.

Symphony at Oaklawn currently has 56 occupants in the personal care unit and 24 in the memory care unit. Residents in both programs benefit from the care of Symphony at Oaklawn’s full-time medical director and nursing staff. Access to a psychiatrist, dentist, podiatrist and other specialized medical providers are also included.

Common rooms in the building – which include seating areas, activity rooms, a library and cafe – are flooded with natural light. The atmosphere of Symphony at Oaklawn is vibrant and upbeat. It’s easy to see why residents find joy and satisfaction in living there. Birthdays are celebrated, cocktails are served and everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

“I didn’t expect to stay for seven years, but I love it,” Maxine says.

For those who may be hesitant about assisted living, Maxine attests to the quality of care and enjoyment she has experienced at Symphony at Oaklawn.

“I’m very well contented,” she says. “It’s an ideal place, especially if you’re 90 and you’re near the end of the road, you may as well enjoy yourself.”

A mom’s story: How Kosair Charities became our village My husband and I were devastated to hear our unborn son, Henry, had spina bifida. Phillip H. Marshall Sr. 1939 - 2019

P

hillip H. Marshall Sr., 80, of Louisville passed away peacefully on Nov. 1, 2019 at Hosparus Inpatient Care Center with his family by his side.

He was born Oct. 1, 1939 in Louisville to Robert W. “Buck” Marshall and Maggie T. Wood Marshall.

Phillip was a 1958 graduate of Castle Heights Military Academy located in Lebanon, Tennessee. He went on to attend Murray State University, where he met the love of his life, Marilyn Landrum, and they married on Oct. 3, 1959.

Phillip was co-owner of Marshall Realty in St. Matthews, a family owned and operated business for over 50 years. He was a member of Beargrass Christian Church, Big Springs Country Club, Kosair Shrine Temple and Churchill Downs Turf Club. Phillip was actively involved in the Marshall Family Foundation; Naval PT Boaters Association in memory of his father-in-law, a Pearl Harbor survivor; and Louisville Board of Realtors.

Phillip was highly thought of in his community and known as “a great man.” He had friends from all walks of life and would go out of his way to help anyone who needed it. He was a member of AA and proudly maintained sobriety for 40 years, sponsoring and mentoring others along the way.

Phillip had fun being outdoors whether it was bird hunting with his English Setters, running, golfing with friends and shuffleboard, in which he was the Florida State Champion. As a young man, he rode and showed horses at Rock Creek Riding Club. In his later years, he became a member of the Thoroughbred Association and enjoyed traveling with his racehorses to tracks all over the country.

Phillip relished all of these things, but the one thing that 122

brought much joy and happiness to his heart was his family. He was a loving husband for over 48 years until Marilyn’s untimely death in 2007. He was a wonderful and fun-loving father and grandfather. He always looked forward to a fun game night with family and friends. Phillip lived life to the fullest and his legacy of strength, hard work, love and laughter will live on forever in those he leaves behind.

Phillip is preceded in death by his loving wife, Marilyn; his parents; and his sister-in-law, Mignon Phebus.

He is survived by his children, Phillip H. Marshall Jr. (Kimberly), April Wood Marshall and Deborah Marshall Skaggs; grandchildren, Phillip H. Marshall III, Ashley Ann Marshall Dondanville (Patrick), Kylie Marshall-Bohn and Sidney, Marshall, Marilyn and William Skaggs; brother-in-law, Edwin Phebus; loving nieces Tralece, Yvette (Fred) and Simone; and his personal devoted caregiver of many years, Lanesha Graves, whom the family considers a blessing in their lives.

Funeral services to celebrate Phillip’s life were held on Nov. 7, 2019 at Beargrass Christian Church, 4100 Shelbyville Road, with burial following in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation took place at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road, “in St. Matthews” and at Beargrass Christian Church prior to the service.
