Canada rolled out their new Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) last month which absorbed current MMPR licences and amal-

gamated them with a new personal cultivation regime similar to the former Marihuana Medical Access Regulations (MMAR) implemented in 2001.

Sparse traffic passed the ongoing construction site of the new Fonthill Marketplace shopping centre, and there were few takers at McDonalds, lower center. The Trap looked busier, though, and you might catch one or two late-season swimmers enjoying a final swim in their pools at left. Top center, and not so far away as we might think, the skyline of Niagara Falls glowed with promise in the low sun, summer’s last Yanks spending their enviably strong dollars before crossing back over the Styx, girding themselves for a presidential election exactly two months and a day from now.

IN THE NEWS String of Pelham break-ins

A string of break-ins occurred in Pelham last week.

The first occurred around midnight on August 29, when a male attempted a

break and enter at a residence on Cherry Ridge Blvd. in Fenwick.

The resident heard a noise at the sliding glass patio door, when lights were turned on a male person was

seen outside the door. He had attempted to gain entry.

The suspect immediately fled the area.

The male is described as white, 20-25 years, thin build, 6’ tall, wearing a grey

Later that morning, at about 4:45 AM, a Fonthill resident awoke to his dog barking repeatedly.

The resident went to the front door of his Spruceside Cr. home, where he confronted a male inside the door.

The male immediately fled out the front door, got onto a bicycle and left the area.

The only description was of a male, with a thin build, wearing a hoodie.

The third incident occurred sometime between August 29-30, at a residence on Hollow Rd. Persons unknown cut a window screen, reached in the window and took a lamp off a table in front of the window. There are currently no suspects.

In all cases investigation continues. Anyone with information should contact Niagara Regional Police Service.

Residents are reminded to lock all doors, windows, sheds, vehicles and garages. Leaving things unlocked gives thieves easy access to your property.

Niagara’s first cases of West Nile Virus

Niagara Region Public Health has received its first two laboratory-confirmed

cases of West Nile Virus for 2016.

Although most people infected with West Nile Virus do not get sick, 20% of people suffer flu-like symptoms and fatigue, and 1%

suffer serious infections of the brain such as meningitis. Fever, severe headache, body aches, neck stiffness, confusion, weakness, tremors, and sudden sensitivity to light are the most common symptoms of severe infection.

Anyone suffering these should see a physician.

To reduce the risk of being exposed to West Nile Virus, health officials advise residents take steps to prevent mosquito bites.

These include eliminating standing water around the home where mosquitoes may breed, repairing damaged window and door screens, keeping skin covered, using insect repellent and avoiding mosquito infested areas.

Tax scam continues to target Niagara residents

The Niagara Regional Police Service continues to receive numerous complaints from residents targeted by a number of common tax scams.

Victims have been targeted by phone and email from individuals claiming to work for the Canada Revenue Agency requesting personal information such as social insurance numbers and banking information to either deposit refunds or make payments for taxes owed.

In some cases, victims are told that they have an outstanding balance that, if not paid immediately, will result in arrest, deportation, or the seizure of homes, vehicles, bank accounts and other assets. Payment is demanded through the purchase of pre-paid credit cards or e-mail transfer.

These types of communication are meant to elicit a sense of stress and urgency. Do not take immediate action and verify the legitimacy of the communication before providing personal information or money.

The CRA will not request personal information by email, and will not demand payment by pre-paid credit cards.

Before taking action, contact the Canada Revenue Agency directly to verify that money is owed to or by you, or that the CRA requires additional information.

The observers standing on the second-story veranda at the Hillside Inn—what are they looking at that we can’t see? (And who knew there was ever a Hillside Inn?) One theory: It’s a parade. In 1939, King Geoge VI and Queen Elizabeth made a cross-Canada tour, with a stop in Niagara Falls on May 22 to dedicate the soon-to-be-finished Rainbow Bridge. While there is no record of a royal visit to Fonthill, hope may have sprung eternal that a white horse and the availability of British Consols cigarettes might have lured the King and his retinue a few miles west from the Falls. charity when he takes part in the 2016 Wellspring Peloton Challenge, a seven-day 24-hour bicycle relay from Toronto to Miami that raises money for Wellspring cancer support centres.

“It’s one week of pain for a good cause,” said Adamson in anticipation of the big event.

Each day will be divided into four, six-hour shifts.

Adamson and his eight-person team will take turns rotating through each shift, completing about 120 kilometers a day for seven days straight.

To prepare, Adamson has been trying to log as many training hours as he can, in spite of this summer’s smothering heat.

“It’s been hot training,” he said. “I’ve been on the bike for five hours at a time and it’s been grueling.”

Adamson has a strong relationship with Wellspring through the Rotary Club, which has been involved with the organization’s new facility planned for East Fonthill.

When he learned about the ride, he thought it

sounded like something he would enjoy.

“I thought ‘Well, I’ve run marathons for four hours so I should be able to sit on a bicycle for six,’ and like an idiot I threw my hat in the ring, after being on the bike exactly once last year,” he said with a laugh.

“So I’m starting to disdain the bike, but it’s a good cause and I should be able to do it.”

After a five-hour ride on Wednesday, Adamson feels confident in his strength and cardio, and the only real complaint is one most cyclists would sympathise with.

“I hate that saddle,” he said, nodding toward his narrow, thinly padded bike seat.

“I told the Rotary members I’m going to throw a big party when I get back for all the people that volunteered and I’m going to have a ceremonial burning of the saddle.”

As part of the peloton, each rider has to raise $10,000.

“She was the smallest ranked national player at the tournament,” said her mother.

But the duo did not let size or expectations hold them back, relying on speed, smarts, and an unusually strong connection to eliminate the competition and make their way to the finals.

“Their connection is very

obvious to everyone who watches them play,” said Andrea. “They are kind to each other, there is no anger between them, they have a good relationship and I attribute a lot of their success to that. These girls take every opportunity to build each other up.”

“We’ve always worked well together, but we have really come together over time,” added Emma.

While the girls lost a

hard-fought finals game to a pair from Burlington, both players and parents we’re proud of their silver finish.

And with court volleyball season fast approaching, the girls are ready to build off of this experience as they enter their first year of high school at E.L. Crossley.

After that?

Well, with all the recent excitement in Rio, Emma is not afraid to set the bar high.

“The Olympics are the dream,” she said.

Her mother, who perhaps knows her best, also knows that Emma can do whatever she puts her mind to.

“She has the drive,” said Andrea.

“You can’t shut anything out. It’s not fun to do fifty squats before bed every night, but she will do it if it’s going to make her jump higher. So who are we to tell her she can’t do it?”

OPINION As We See It Have it, or eat it

T SEEMS THAT the Town of Pelham is bent on both having and eating their cake when it comes to conservation of heritage sites.

It also seems like the Town will say anything to get what they want, though at this point that’s an old tune.

If the Town ever tells you it’s raining, you’d be wellserved to inspect the back of your shirt.

This doublespeak was on full display at the August 25 Council meeting, where the incomplete work of the former Heritage Committee was trotted out as a justification to demolish the Timmsdale House. The Town pointed to an unsigned, handwritten note, and an unofficial, incomplete register list, and declared that this was proof-positive that the Committee itself had deemed the building to be without heritage.

This was quite an aboutface after Council thought so little of the Committee that they voted to disband it two years ago. And yet now, unattributed scrawls in margins and rough drafts of Excel spread sheets are informing Town policy.

It’s interesting that Council discarded the Heritage

Committee when its reports were inconvenient, but has embraced the former group anew in the midst of their recent decision.

It’s about a process that’s broken because the people wielding authority aren’t using it in good faith Of course, it should be made clear that the Town has not truly embraced the committee, but rather cherry-picked a few documents that theoretically support Town claims. Several members of the former Committee have in fact rejected the opinions attributed to them.

So the Committee’s work gets ignored when it will slow down development, but proudly cited when it will speed things up. Is anyone seeing a pattern here? Be-

cause that’s not how this is supposed to work. The Heritage Committee’s work was meant to be a tool to guide the community in making practical conservation decisions, but it has instead been manipulated to suit the Town’s needs.

And let’s be clear. This isn’t really about the demolition of the Timmsdale House. It’s about a process that’s broken because the people wielding authority are not using it in good faith. It’s not fair to expect the new Timmsdale owners to spend more than the house is worth to preserve it. If the Town had simply said, “The cost of conservation is unreasonable,” then so be it. Most residents could understand this, if not agree with it.

Instead, the Town spun a tale that implied the existence of support that wasn’t there, championing the very Committee efforts spurned not so long ago.

Council should be wary of staff and peers who rely on this verbal Three-Card Monte. Fast talk and clever excuses only hold out for so long. They can have their cake, or eat their cake, but it’s about time they stopped trying to convince residents that both are possible.

Praise for Summerfest I have been reading lately a number of letters and articles about Summerfest.

First of all I would like to say what a great success this event has been for the past six years, which started out as a one-day event and has grown to four wonderful days.

There have been accusations that the Town is only in it for the money.

Well I for one am sure glad it isn’t on the backs of us taxpayers.

If we can have such a successful event, not cost the taxpayer much at all and make a few bucks to boot that is a win in my books.

My wife and I were downtown at some point all four days and saw first-hand what a great time everyone had.

The local—and, yes, outside merchants— were reaping the benefits and doing a great business, as was the original intention.

A couple of the newer businesses in the downtown area seemed to be doing very well, along with getting the exposure they needed.

Demonstrators picket circus

BY VOICE STAFF The Shrine circus was in Welland in late August, and although the event was marketed as fun for the whole family, not everyone agreed.

Leading the charge against the circus this year was Liz Smith, founder of Brock Students for Animal Liberation, and one of the organizers behind the weekend’s anti-circus demonstrations. Smith feels strongly that it’s wrong to use animals in the circus “There are a lot of ethical and moral concerns that come with using animals for entertainment purposes,” she said. “They have to travel long-distances in ex-

The website also notes that the circus is a big fundraiser for Shriners charities.

However, Brock Students for Animal Liberation aren’t buying it, citing an article from the New York Times that found that “over half of Shrine activities like circuses, raffles, etc., funded the costs associated with their fraternity and temple activities— like alcohol, parties, and paid trips to Shrine meetings—not the children’s hospital. The Shrine’s national auditor has confirmed [the] findings.”

As of press time, the Shrine Circus could not be reached for comment.

to houses and parks.

“It’s unfortunate,” he said, “I wish they were doing it in a commercial area.”

However, according to Ridderickhoff, extensive measures are taken to ensure the facility is not a hindrance

to the community.

“Unlike MMAR sites, our site will have stringent odour control methods...It will be much better than living near a chicken or cattle farm,” he said.

Ridderikhoff noted that

the site’s security includes barbed wire fences, alarm systems, guards, and a storage vault. He says the business will bring with it between 50 and 60 jobs, both on the floor and in the office, and operators will rely en-

tirely on local businesses to build and maintain the site.

According to a recent Globe and Mail report, Canada’s marijuana market could exceed $2.5-billion by 2020 if the Liberals fulfill their promise to legalize the herb.

Eyes ahead: Focus on the future

R

ECENTLY, I went through all of the things I left behind at my parents’ house after I moved out. I hadn’t thought about or looked at them in years, and yet I found it really difficult to throw these things away. What I was feeling was nostalgia, “a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past.”

Nostalgia is sometimes a deceptive feeling: we have a tendency to look at the past with rose-coloured glasses.

If I look back at my childhood a little more objectively, I can point out many good experiences, but I can also remember everything that I would go back and change.

People like to hold on to things from their past in order to feel like they still

have some connection to it, but the reality is that the past is gone and we will never go back to it.

So, how do we deal with our past and get beyond it?

A part of the answer is to focus on the future.

LEARN FROM THE PAST: Rather than letting the mistakes we made bring us down, let them be reminders of what not to do in life. What good is the past if it doesn’t help us have a better future? Additionally, the good things in our past should be celebrated, but we shouldn’t rest on our laurels.

Let the good things of our past be the catalyst and the motivation to do even better in life. The past, both the good and bad parts, should be what drives us into the future.

MAKE YOUR LIFE YOUR OWN: Many people are who they are and do what they do not because they took the time to develop their own personality, but simply because they are emulating what their parents did. The solution is to explore your past and to learn from it; then, based on what you’ve learned, begin to forge your own path in life. Take ownership of your life and make your decisions based on the goals you want to accomplish.

HAVE PURPOSE: The goals you set should be based upon what you consider to be your purpose in life; this can be anything that you are passionate about. So long as your passion does not bring harm to others, you will be doing a good thing, and you’ll be contributing to so-

Joint forces operation dismantles Niagara drug trafficking ring

Since March, a joint forces operation involving Canada Border Services Agency, the Ontario Provincial Police, the RCMP, and led by the Niagara Regional Police, has been investigating a drug trafficking organization based in the Niagara Region.

The investigation uncovered evidence of a large cocaine trafficking ring based in the area with ties to persons in the Greater Toronto Area. The investigation became known as Project Icarus.

In the early morning hours of August 31, approximately 110 officers from the Golden Horseshoe area as-

sisted Project Icarus in executing 13 search and arrest warrants in Welland, Port Colborne, Fort Erie, Oakville, and Niagara Falls.

As a result, police arrested several men and women from across the region.

These persons are facing a variety of charges related to cocaine trafficking, as well as several assault and weapons offenses. Investigators seized $25,000 worth of various narcotics, approximately $175,000 in cash, a 2011 Mercedes Benz S63, 11 firearms including one handgun, various other weapons, and $25,000 worth of stolen property.

Police also seized multiple electronic devices for examination. This investigation is ongoing and it is anticipated more charges and arrests will result from the operation.

Parking lot robbery

On Monday, August 29, at around 1:30 AM, police attended a parking lot at 344 Glendale Avenue, St. Catharines, in response to a robbery.

Upon arrival, police learned that the male victim was attacked from behind by another male who was demanding money.

During this altercation the victim sustained several cuts and bruises, a contusion to his head, and a broken arm.

The suspect fled the area prior to police arriving on scene.

The victim was transported to a hospital in St. Catharines and treated for his injuries.

Police are looking for the other male involved in this incident. He is described as white, approximately 5’ 11” with short brown hair, around 25 years of age, wearing a red t-shirt, and beige cargo khaki-style shorts.

Brock’s monitoring program assesses drought impact

Researchers at Brock University’s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute are studying the impact this hot, dry summer has had on grape growers’ crops.

CCOVI’s preharvest monitoring program returns this week for a seventh harvest season, tracking key indicators of fruit ripeness across the Niagara Peninsula.

“It’s one of the driest years we’ve seen and it is hard to predict the impact of that on fruit development,” says CCOVI viticulturist Jim Willwerth. “In years like this with extreme weather, the preharvest program really helps growers understand how the conditions

are impacting their vineyards and assists wineries with their harvest decisions and winemaking practices.”

Each week until the varieties are harvested, Willwerth and CCOVI oenologist Belinda Kemp collect samples at four sites across the Niagara region, tracking the most popular Niagara varieties — Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet sauvignon, Cabernet franc and Pinot noir.

Once the samples return to Brock, sugar levels, titratable acidity, pH and volatile acidity are measured by CCOVI’s Analytical Services team, before being posted online.

The data is available to

the industry through an interactive website that lets users compare varieties and vintages at different sites across the region. This allows users to compare current numbers to previous harvests in order to put the data into context. Researchers expect a higher level of interest in the data this year due to 2016’s growing conditions.

Last year, the online database received more than 1,500 page views with people in 38 countries checking in to see how Niagara’s harvest was progressing.

Car collides with motorized wheelchair

On Thursday, September 1, police and emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle that had collided with a female in a motorized wheelchair on Louth Street near Fourth Avenue in St. Catharines.

Investigators determined that a 46-year-old female from St. Catharines was operating her motorized wheelchair and cross-

ing Louth Street heading east. At the same time, a 76-year-old female, also from St. Catharines, was operating a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt northbound on Louth Street toward the intersection at Fourth Avenue.

The Chevrolet and the pedestrian in the wheelchair collided in the northbound lane of Louth Street, just south of the intersection.

The 46 year-old female in the wheelchair suffered life-threatening injuries and has since been flown by air-ambulance to an out-

DJ equipment stolen from hotel

Sometime between 9:30 AM and 10:15 AM on July 2, a lone male entered into a hotel in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The male was captured on video surveillance stealing a variety of high end DJ equipment from the ballroom area. Police are looking to identify the suspect responsible for the theft and are asking anyone with information to contact them at 905-688-4111 ext. 2200.

Sign of the times

E.L. Crossley’s signage got a facelift last Friday as the decade-old sign out front of the school was replaced last Friday by a larger, more functional version.

The old sign, which was installed in 2008, was considered undersized for secondary school signage within the District School Board of Niagara. Parts of the electronic message board were also malfunctioning.

The old sign was removed shortly after the new one was installed, and will be fixed up and repurposed for an elementary school.

The new sign is about ten feet tall and has a double-sided electronic message centre. The sign was built and installed by Signature Sign and Image of Niagara Falls, who won a bid to construct five new signs for the school board.

Seductions shooting update

On Sunday, February 21, police responded to reports of a shooting in the parking lot of Seductions Gentlemen’s Club on Lundy’s Lane in Niagara Falls.

On September 1, with the assistance of Durham Regional Police, the NRP arrested a 30-year-old Oshawa resident, in the Town of Whitby.

He was returned to Niagara and charged with three counts of Assault with a Weapon. The man was held pending a bail hearing.

As a result of the continued investigation by the #2 District Detective Office, a second suspect has been identified.

Malcolm Edwards remains wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for three counts of Attempted Murder and numerous firearms offences.

Edwards’ current whereabouts are unknown.

He was a resident of Niagara Falls and has ties to the Toronto area.

Edwards is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached by members of the public.

The Niagara Regional Police are appealing to Malcolm Edwards to contact a lawyer and surrender himself to police.

TRENCH MORTAR DEDICATION THIS WEEKEND The dedication ceremony for the WWI cenotaph and trench mortar at Old Pelham Town Hall in Ridgeville will be held at the Old Town Hall site at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 10, where members of Town Council and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613 will officially unveil the pieces. The cenotaph was restored in July of last year, while the trench mortar has been undergoing an offsite restoration over the past few months. Though the Town had initially considered discarding the mortar, the resulting outcry from the community caused them to reverse their decision and restore the war trophy.

The inspirational story of Edgar W. Farr Fenwick educator was involved in and excelled at long list of local and regional endeavors

W

HILE STUDYING the history of Pelham recently, I was pleased to learn more about Edgar W. Farr — the man, the educator, the friend to many— and the ways he inspired residents across the entire Niagara region and beyond.

His legacy has lived on through E.W. Farr Memorial Public School, but may not be as well known by the current generation of Pelham residents and students.

It has been said that “It takes a village to raise a child,” and in this village leaders emerge, some by choice, and others through the examples they set, and the positive impact they have on the lives of others can be remarkable.

In his time, E.W. Farr was one of these leaders.

Though quiet and unassuming, he was nevertheless a leader in education, and the community, acting as a mentor to many residents that went on to build not only Fenwick and Pelham, but communities across the world.

The facts surrounding E.W. Farr are worth noting.

He was born near Fenwick in 1873 and began teaching in 1891 at Union School No. 7 in Pelham.

In 1904, he came to teach at SS No. 9 in Fenwick, which was located on Baxter Lane. From 1904 to 1938, he was a fixture in the community and taught many students who went on to illustrious careers of all types — professional, service, trades and more.

He was a leader in educational circles, serving as president of the Welland

Such a celebration for a teacher was uncommon, but to those whose lives he touched he was special County Teachers’ Association in 1910, the Lincoln County Teachers’ Association in 1916, the South Welland Teachers’ Association in 1928, and the Welland, Lincoln and Haldimand Teachers’ Association in 1932.

His active involvement in education was also instrumental in the establishment of Pelham Continuation School in 1928 (later to become Pelham District High School/ Pelham Secondary School) that enabled students to continue their education locally.

His activities were not confined to the classroom, but extended into other communities and regions.

He was a church elder, a captain of the local football team, president of the Pelham Liberal Association, and a founding board member of the Maple Acre Library Board.

With the new library building renovation in Fenwick in 2016, we owe gratitude to the foresight of E.W. Farr and others in establishing a local and well-used community facility, making the community better for all generations.

During both world wars, students who were inspired

by E.W. Farr about service to the community and country decided to join the Canadian Forces. Some of these students made the ultimate sacrifice, and their names are forever noted in Old Pelham Town Hall.

There are students taught

by E.W. Farr still residing in Pelham and elsewhere who have lasting memories of him.

A man who taught all students regardless of class, background, gender, ethnicity and aptitude.

A disciplinarian that still had the common touch to help students be successful inside and outside the classroom.

A man who took pride in

the success of his students once they left his school. He was known to follow former students’ careers and was quietly proud of how each student contributed to the growth of our local community and other communities which we share today.

When E.W. Farr retired from teaching, a surprise celebration of his career was held with some 600 attending and telegrams of congratulations received from many others who were unable to be there.

Such a celebration for a teacher was uncommon, but to those whose lives he touched he was special.

In 1950, he was further honoured by having a school named after him for his contributions—E.W. Farr Memorial School.

His name was proudly associated with the public school in Fenwick for 66 years (1950-2016), a name that has now been dropped

for more than 10,000 feet of elevation gain and loss.

Going back to the golf analogy, let’s make it 88 holes with the greens alternating between the top and bottom of the Escarpment!

Yet Ward, a Fenwick resident whom you know as an effervescent and helpful circulation clerk at the Fonthill Library, says, “People need to know that everybody can do this. You just have to try it. I don’t have a coach, I don’t follow a special diet, I don’t have a GPS or pacing device. I developed my own training plan from the internet, and I read a lot. And it’s really, really good for relieving stress.”

Ward may be forgiven for her biased view of what it takes to be successful at ultramarathon trail running.

She ran competitively in high school, including cross-country, and always at the longest distances available.

Raising three kids, who think she’s crazy, took her out of running for a few years, but in 2012 she ran the Niagara Falls International Marathon.

With the marathon distance safely in the “Been there, done that” category, Ward switched to trail running and competed in Ontario’s Five Peaks Trail Race Series.

A 50K race in Huntsville followed, and she has run the Finger Lakes Fifties (50 miles) for the last two years — never failing to finish.

This is the record Ward put on the line when she attempted the Twisted Branch 100K. “At 40 miles [60K] my legs were cement. No bend left, no give.

The uphills are hard, but the downhills really make you sore.

When asked how she completed the final 40K, she says, “You don’t think. Everything’s exhausted. You become a machine.”

Then Ward reflects for a moment, as if I’d asked a stupid question.

“Once you sign up, you can’t not finish,” she says simply.

Perhaps that attitude is why she was one of 42 finishers from an entry field of 150.

ter, to run with Ward for the last 15 miles—shouting encouragement, pointing out obstacles on the trail, wayfinding, and doing whatever was necessary to allow Ward to focus solely on the physical and mental challenge of each stride.

Ward says, for the third time, “Anyone can do this.”

Not entirely convinced, I learn that Ward’s training regimen is to run 12 kilometres each day, Monday through Thursday, and do a long run on Saturday. And how long is a long training run?

“I was out one Saturday, doing my loops in Shorthills, and I kept meeting this same woman who was hiking.

When she asked how long I was running for, I told her nine hours and 42 miles,” says Ward.

As to motivation and rewards, it’s not just the gourmet Clif Shots, bacon and watermelon she consumes during a run that makes it all worthwhile.

“It’s amazing when you cross the finish line. Not a huge build-up. Just, I’m done, I’ve accomplished something. It’s physically and mentally...empowering.

There’s not many opportunities in life like that moment,” says Ward. “’Never again’ is the immediate thought that comes to mind at the finish. Then after a couple hours or days, runner’s amnesia sets in, the pain is forgotten, and planning starts for the next one.”

What’s her next goal?

“A 100-miler. It’s that bar. If you can finish a hundred miler, then you’re an ultra runner,” Ward says, knowing, simply by thinking it and verbalizing it, that she is now committed to doing it.

No big deal.

As she says one last time, challenging us all to get active, push ourselves, and set difficult goals, “Anyone can do this.”


