By the numbers: As of this writing, on Monday afternoon, the Region has added seven COVID-19 cases since last week—one last Monday, zero on Tuesday, three on Wednesday, zero on Thursday, two on Friday and Saturday, zero on Sunday, and one this Monday. There remains one active case in Pelham (41 historical). Five Niagara municipalities have zero active cases.

Niagara overall has seen 938 cases, of which 21 remain active.

There have been 64 Niagara deaths directly attributed to the virus, and an unknown number hastened by it. Fire Chief Bob Lymburner reports that the MCC will open its walking track, with restrictions, next Tuesday, Sept. 8. Amazing things these folks are doing...Also beyond the call of duty: For an article that ended up getting bumped from print this week (it’s on our website this week; in print next week) about the Steve Bauer trail, contributor Brian Green and I were having trouble determining when, exactly, the trail was opened. It turns out the man himself is off at the Tour de France at the moment, working for Poland's first WorldTour cycling team, and this apparently closely guarded trail timeline was to be found nowhere online. Well, despite being on vacation, it was Pelham Director of Recreation, Culture, and Wellness Vickie vanRavenswaay to the rescue just a moment ago. Talks started in ‘92. Trail opened in ‘94. Planning completed in ‘96. Thanks, ma'am! Bonus trivia: Guess how old Steve Bauer is today? If you answered 61, you are correct...Five decades in one house: As we tended to move often before settling in Pelham, it's a little hard to get my head around living in one town, let alone the same house for 50 years. ith two weeks to go before Election Day, and early voting starting this week (see the Town's election notice, p. 7), the race seems clearly a threeway contest among James Federico, Wayne Olson, and Steven Soos.

Olson has gained some ground, with over a third of respondents now in his camp. Federico and Soos both dropped marginally, to 28% and 24% respectively.

There remains a wide gap between the top three candidates and the bottom three candidates, with Wally Braun, Maria Brigantino, and Colleen Kenyon all stuck in single-digit territory, at 7%, 4%, and 2% respectively.

BY VOICE STAFF As questions continue to mount regarding an email that Pelham Mayor Dave Augustyn quietly sent to a District School Board of Niagara trustee last summer, Augustyn has agreed to address the issue at a public meeting scheduled for this evening, Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Fenwick.

HEN I WAS young, my father and I would go for long drives along the rural routes of Pelham. We’d blast George Thurgood and roll down the windows because we loved the smell of the breeze, the sensation of crisp Niagara wind beating our cheeks and tangling our hair against our summer-kissed skin.

My father was not a sentimental man. He worked in factories and had a Gordon Lightfoot mustache and never shed tears over injuries.

Yet something about the Pelham landscape, the hilly backdrop to his childhood and the childhoods of our ancestors, drew him in. He’d stop by a farm or a gathering of woods and, surrendering his manly veneer, tell me a story about the town.

This place is precious. This is the earth that granted us life. Here is the place where we happened upon love or here is a site of devastation.

On one particular drive sometime in the late ‘90s we stopped at a tree with a plaque.

“This tree looks dead,” I said to my father.

“It sure is getting there, Julie.”

A construction error was discovered following the opening of a traffic calming chicane on Haist Street north of Hwy 20 last Monday that prevented large vehicles from passing through.

One resident living in the neighbourhood said he contacted the Town after seeing a small schoolbus get stuck as it tried to get through the new traffic calming measure. Later that day while driving behind a cement truck, he said that he became concerned for the public’s safety when the truck had to turn around because it couldn’t get through.

Petition-inspired changes coming to 2017 Summerfest

Representatives from the Pelham Summerfest committee Candy Ashbee and Bill Gibson presented council with a final report on the 2016 Summerfest at the Council meeting on Monday, Nov. 21.

Prompted by a story in the Voice in August about a merchant petition to move Summerfest from Pelham Street, in September Town staff met with various stakeholders to hear their complaints, promising at the time that changes in the way Summerfest was mounted would be con-

sidered.

The main concerns identified during the community engagement process were security, parking, ensuring customer can access all businesses in town, and liability for damages. How to get all Pelham Street businesses to participate and finding ways to make it beneficial for them to set up a booth were also determined to be of high priority for the committee as they plan for next year’s event.

Gibson told Council that the committee is addressing these concerns in a variety of ways. To improve parking, they intend to create bet-

ter signage for out-of-town visitors to designated parking areas and shuttle services. To make participation in Summerfest more enticing to local businesses, they plan to implement a tiered-charge for booths. Under the new system, Pelham Street business owners will be charged the least, other local businesses will pay a slightly higher fee, and vendors from outside Pelham will pay the most. In response to more specific issues for individual businesses, they will also slightly alter the footprint of the event and make adjustments to security.

Another way the committee plans

to improve the 2017 Summerfest is by sponsoring and working with the organizers of the Thursday Night Bandshell Concert series to select the artist performing on the first night of Summefest. They also intend to make more use of the smartphone app they launched in 2016.

"We are really going to push it this year," Ashbee said.

“It really helps to get people to see what events there are so they can plan out where they are going.

Next was a walk to the newsagents to pay for the daily delivery of the Daily Mirror. As I said, Dad was a printer, but when he was 37 he had been rejected for a job, as being too old, by the printers of the Beano.

For that reason, my favourite comic was not allowed in the house, but while I was paying the papers, the newsagent let me have a 'shoofty' at the Beano. I'd explained my predicament and he understood completely.

Sundays were different again. Dad would play golf on summer mornings and billiards in winter. Then he'd stop for a 'refresher' at the local and would pick up the prawns, cockles, winkles or whelks we'd be having for tea later. Meanwhile, Mum was roasting the 'joint' and potatoes. BY VOICE STAFF The District School Board of Niagara is requesting that the Town of Pelham cede a portion of Cherry Ridge Park for use as a soccer field to serve the students of the new Wellington Heights Public School, formerly the E. W. Farr Memorial Public School, in Fenwick.

Currently under renovation and expansion, the new school will combine students and staff from the previous school and Pelham Centre, where classes are being held while construction continues.

Two letters, containing virtually identical text but signed by different authorities, were sent last week to nearby residents of the park, as well as to parents of Pelham Centre students.

“The DSBN is currently building onto Wellington Heights Public School on Alsop Drive,” states the letter. “The size of the school's addition means the existing small soccer field will be eliminated.

In an effort to bring further attention and deterrence to driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, the Niagara Regional Police Service reports the names of those people who are charged with an alleged criminal impaired driving offence in the Region. None of the following charges have been proved in court.

In addition to being charged, these individuals are also bound by a Ministry of Transportation 90-Day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension and are prohibited from operating a motor vehicle on a roadway. The public is encouraged to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service Traffic Safety Hotline or Crime Stoppers to report those who are driving in contravention of the suspension.

Raising monarchs This year Judy Hagadorn has handraised 70 of the increasingly endangered butterflies, egg to adulthood

Despite the rain and thunder outside Judy Hagadorn’s home on Rolling Meadows Boulevard, the two monarch butterflies sheltering inside her sunroom seemed perfectly at ease. Inside a small wooden habitat with mesh panels, the butterflies sipped from a little dish of water and honey, awaiting their release into the wild when calmer weather arrived.

Another mesh habitat sat on the table— this one full of chrysalises, the hardened outer layer of butterfly pupae—each labeled by number and pinned to the top of the habitat. More monarchs were scheduled to arrive soon, as evidenced by the darkening of the chrysalises which were most mature.

“They are fascinating creatures.

I love it,” said Hagadorn, opening the butterfly habitat. One butterfly hopped obligingly onto her finger, then fluttered to her shoulder, eventually nestling in her hair.

Hagadorn was inspired to raise monarchs after visiting a friend in Thunder Bay in 2018. The friend raised monarchs in a big wood and mesh indoor habitat, and Hagadorn was able to observe the butterflies grow in all their different stages. While she was only able

to raise and release five monarchs in 2019, she has been able to raise 73 butterflies this year.

According to National Geographic, female monarch butterflies will lay between 300-500 eggs on the leaves of milkweed plants. Once the egg hatches into larvae, or caterpillars, they will exclusively eat milkweed for two weeks before spinning a cocoon and forming a chrysalis to enter the pupa stage. After another two weeks, they emerge as orange and black adult monarch butterflies.

Since the 1980s, Western monarch butterfly populations have faced a 99 percent decline, while Eastern monarchs have declined by almost 80 percent. Aside from climate change, the use of pesticides, herbicides, and excessive mowing has resulted in less milkweed available as a habitat and food source for monarchs.

Milkweed is an integral part of Hagadorn’s self-titled “COVID Project.” When she first began rearing monarchs in 2019, Hagadorn collected milkweed pods from a friend in Effingham who owned several acres of milkweed. After separating the seeds by hand, she put them in a plastic bag and into the fridge to en-

courage gemination through cold stratification. She was then able to transfer 15 plants to her garden and keep 20 plants in her sunroom to feed the five caterpillars she brought inside.

In 2020, Hagadorn’s milkweed regrew and at four to five feet tall was the perfect place for monarchs to lay eggs. She noticed the first butterfly laying eggs on July 3 and was able to eventually collect 39 eggs and 42 caterpillars in different stages.

Over the course of two months, Hagadorn disinfected leaves, separated caterpillars into containers, and moved pupae into a separate habitat to keep them organized and safe and give them enough room to emerge.

t’s been almost four years since Sulphur Springs Road was closed due to a washout of Twelve Mile Creek. And while there is still access for residents on either side, trucks have not been able to cut through to the 406. Motorcycle groups no longer roar through the twisty back road on Sundays. And many of the road’s residents could not be more delighted.

In August the Town voted to approve a contract to reconnect Sulphur Springs Road where it crosses Twelve Mile Creek. When this idea came up last year we asked council to reconsider this option in favour of a much less expensive hike and bike option for reconnecting Sulphur Springs Road. We suggested including a small park at the former bridge site. And we even know of one sponsor who wants to be involved in creating the park.

Should council now decide not to reconnect the road it would create a year-round active transportation opportunity and a beautiful natural heritage site. It would importantly preserve the aquatic habitat of the Upper Twelve Mile Creek watershed. This is not just another stream with fish in it. In fact the head-

waters of Twelve Mile Creek is Niagara’s most significant cold water resource. Home to a threatened population of native Brook Trout and other aquatic species, Upper

currents that increase sedimentation and aggravate property damage from flood incidents that are increasing each year. Whereas if we adopt the “soft” option of a hike and bike trail, we can use natural materials to gently divert the creek with minimal disruption of its natural course.

Council must now reconsider the road option. The Town needs to preserve what little is left of one of our natural ecosystems. A decision now not to re-open the road will save the Town money while protecting environmentally significant areas, water resources and systems that will foster and enhance local biodiversity into the future.

Federico's approach to cannabis growers not realistic In his reaction to the recent Town charge against Leviathan for illegal growing at its site, Ward 1 candidate Mr. Federico suggests that we should aim to combat adversity between the Town and its cannabis industries, and that we should collaborate instead.

In an ideal world this makes sense, but we need to keep in mind that past collaboration between the cannabis industries and the Town's former council and mayor (with a focus on development at any cost) brought us to the current situation.

We must keep in mind that the causes

for negativity about cannabis operations can be laid at the industries' own respective doorsteps. For example, CannTrust and RedeCan have shown an enormous disrespect for the residents living near them by failing to address serious odour issues. Leviathan's and CannTrust's illegal growing has shown lack of respect for the authority of the Town and the rights of the community. These behaviours are not conducive to earning the privilege of collaboration.

I

t is a certainly a trying and confusing time for students, parents, staff, and trustees. As a board, we have been having online information sessions on a weekly basis. At these meetings, Director Hoshizaki fills us in on the details he is getting at his meetings with the Ministry of Education, the directors in other districts, and the Health Department. We tell him the concerns that our parents across the region are expressing, so yes, even though the actual staffing and procedure processes are being set by senior administration, trustees do have input on the decision making.

Class sizes are being finalized as the data from the return to school questionnaire has been analyzed and contact has been made with parents who did not complete the questionnaire. Until the final number of returning students for each school was tallied, principals could not figure out their classes or staffing. This has now been finalized and teachers have been given their class assignments. Teachers who did not feel comfortable returning to their physical classrooms have been given classes in the virtual online school.

All schools have been visited to assess how the spacing will be achieved. Depending on each school’s numbers, there may be a need to utilize gyms and libraries to make the spacing work. To help with distancing, schools have introduced new signage and directional markings, etc. Classrooms with no sinks are being equipped with sanitation stations. Each school has enough PPE on hand to last for six months and this

will be replaced as needed. Extra cleaning staff has been hired to keep up with the new demands. Many church and community groups have offered the board the use of their buildings. While at this time we do not need the extra space, their offers are deeply appreciated. Communities working together—wonderful!

The online school will be very different from the way it was in the spring. Last March, the closure of the schools came as a shock to everyone. Students and teachers quickly had to relearn a whole new learning/teaching process. Everyone acknowledges that the approach was somewhat haphazard but everyone had to adapt.

Some were better at it than others. Since then, we have had time to develop a comprehensive plan. Online summer school courses were a good opportunity to try out the new system and revamp areas that needed improvement. Students in these courses felt they received quality teaching and teach-

ith school openings in Niagara just days away, it is great to see COVID-19 numbers continuing to be low even as Stage 3 enters its third week. As of this writing we saw no new cases in Niagara, with an effective reproductive number at 0.4, well below the acceptable level of 1. Days to double is at its all time highest rate, 752.

Niagara District School Board is saying that 80% of its students have opted to return to the classroom, as opposed to continue learning by virtual means from home. This is hardly surprising as a big part of school is socializing with friends and interacting with each other.

A huge development on the COVID-19 front is the imminent approval by Health Canada of a saliva test for the virus which would augment the rather uncomfortable nasal test.

The saliva test has already been approved for use in many southern US states, and with a 94 % confor-

mity rate to the nasal test Health Canada is expected to follow suit very soon.

The three main benefits Marvin Junkin of this test are that it is cheaper than the nasal test, it does not have to be administered by a healthcare worker, and one just has to spit into a container and send it to a lab. Contrary to current government policy, some experts think that any child with symptoms should be given a mandatory test to help prevent clusters. If saliva testing does indeed get approved in Canada, this level of testing does become feasible.

On the Town front, facilities continue to reopen with ever-evolving protocols in place. Effective last Friday, Town staff are no longer administering temperature tests to any person entering Town facilities. As of this writing staff will continue to ask the standard questions and gather contact information.

The fall reopening for the MCC is based on provincial guidelines for recreational facilities. Some highlights are: 50 people will be allowed on the ice at one time, and 50 spectators are allowed as long as they follow social distancing rules.

Both arenas will have change rooms open with no showers. The walking track will be open with users having to make reservations, no running will be allowed. The track will be cleaned/ disinfected once a day. Also, as per provincial guidelines air dryers in the washrooms will be disabled with paper towels being used instead.

Proposed programming at this point in time is as follows: stick and puck programs, shinny, public skating, ladies learn to play hockey, senior learn to skate, return of Brock fitness, senior fitness, chair yoga, pickle ball, and some after-school programs for youth.

Council says yes to anti-speeding devices

In what was easily the shortest open portion of a Pelham Town Council meeting this year, members unanimously voted on August 24 to accept a staff report recommending the purchase of several traffic safety devices to be included in the 2021 capital budget.

The items include eight solar-powered flashing yellow warning lights intended to be placed along Effingham Street between Regional Roads 20 and 69, and two solar-powered “dynamic” speed display signs along the same route.

Speeding has been a concern on the rolling stretch of North Pelham roadway for several years, with council approving a reduction of the speed limit to 50 km/h last fall.

Four of the flashing lights are set to be installed to warn drivers of approaching intersections at Tice and Metler Roads. Four more will be installed to warn of sharp curves between Kilman and Sixteen Road, and between Oille Street and RR 69.

The popularity of the speed display signs, however, prompted two councillors to ask about adding more in other locations. Ward 3’s Lisa Haun requested that Public Works Director Jason Marr also consider stretches of Merritt, Port Robinson and Quaker Roads.

“We can take that back and look at options on those locations,” Marr said.

The Public Works Director said the portable displays are better for lower-use roads, while higher-volume thoroughfares ideally would receive “a more permanent solution.”

He added that the placement of the displays is usually complaint-driven, and said that speeding data from the machines is collected and passed along to police for speed enforcement planning.

“Unfortunately, one of the downfalls with those signs is that when they are positioned, some people tend to use them as a game to see how fast they can get going,” Marr said.

As far as the flashing yellow lights go, the Town report estimates the cost at $14,400.

Chief Administrative Officer David Cribbs provided a COVID-19 update, again reporting strong results from the midsummer openings of recreational amenities.

He said the Town pool had seen 210 family rentals, 295 people in various lessons, 88 lane-swim pass purchases, and full weekly Zumba classes. As a result, the pool is scheduled to remain open for the entirety of the Labour Day weekend, rather than

close on its traditional Friday before. Camps were also an apparent success, with 240 campers signed up through the end of this week.

“Lots of progress and lots of usage, and that’s what really the facilities are there for, the quality of life of residents,” Cribbs said.

The next stage of the Town’s plan is moving towards fall and winter amenities, including planning for basketball and the reopening of the walking track at the community centre.

Fire Chief and Chief Bylaw Enforcement Officer Bob Lymburner also gave a short COVID-19 status report, telling council that Pelham’s school crossing guards will be provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) by the Town when classes resume.

With the coronavirus caseload under apparent control in Niagara for now, he also highlighted the continued closure of the U.S. border to non-essential travel.

“Hopefully [it] remains closed for some time,” Lymburner said.

Councillors also passed bylaws regarding a Saffron Meadows East Fonthill subdivision agreement, and one allowing the delegation of authority to the Director of Community Planning and Development regarding condominium approval and the lifting of parking lot control.

Council then met in a closed session regarding a labour relations matter.

back. Classrooms will certainly look very different.

Rugs, couches and other soft material items have been removed. In most classes, there will no longer be groupings of desks. All desks will face forward and will be properly spaced to help contain droplet spread.

Masks will be mandatory for students from Grades 4-12.

The schools will be providing all students with two masks but children can also use ones from home and are encouraged to practice regular washing of masks.

It has been suggested that students use lanyards to avoid dropping their masks or placing them on their desks. While the schools will not be supplying these, parents are encouraged to check around their houses

Pat passed away peacefully at the Welland Hospital on August 23, 2020, in his 78th year.

Beloved husband of Rebecca (Becky) Berndt for 56 years. Pat was a loving father to Kelly (Bob) Kilyk and Mark Cline. He was well loved by his 5 grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Courtney, Jack, Sam and Maggie. He was survived by his brother Mike (Caroline) Cline of Arizona and brother-inlaw Tim (Barb) Berndt of Niagara Falls. Pat was predeceased by his parents Claude and Corrine Cline. Pat will be missed by the many organizations he was involved with. He worked at General Motors for over 30 years as a general supervisor, in quality control, in administration and management. He was a member of the American Foundry Society (AFS) for many years. After retiring he did some consulting, investment management and aided in writing a training program. As to health screening, the board has to follow the directive of the Health Department and they have been slow in finalizing a procedure. The Ministry finally sent the report out last week and all boards must abide by their direction.

Schools have plans in place if a child/teacher gets sick at school and they will be able to provide a tracing of other people the student/ teacher has had contact with while in the school. After that, it is taken over by the Health Department.

We all understand how difficult and stressful the reopening of the schools will be. Children are very

aware of the moods of their parents; if parents are upset or angry about the plans to return to school, children will pick up on this. Sitting down with your child, especially the younger ones, and calmly talking to them about how this year will be different will go a long way in reassuring them that this will be a safe and happy time. Hopefully, the number of COVID cases will continue to stay low and all our children, teachers and parents will stay safe and healthy and we can eventually put these drastic measures behind us. But until then, we must stay the course!

WARD 1 CANDIDATE OP-ED Colleen Kenyon Hopeful action, not wishful thinking The Voice has invited each of the candidates running in the Ward 1 by-election for Pelham Town Council to contribute a commentary on issues important to them. This week we hear from Colleen Kenyon.

I

never met Mike Ciolfi, but I’ve come to know enough of what he stood for to understand how much his family, his friends, his ward, his town have lost. I join the other candidates in recognizing the importance of the role he played on council. By standing for election to the seat in Ward 1, we are trying, each in our own way, to demonstrate the same commitment to serving our community.

Today, I'm taking this space to talk about the elephant in the room: COVID-19. Ward 1 residents, like everybody else, have grown pandemic-weary, and we're all trying to show this unwelcome visitor the door. We've moved it to an armchair, and have started to rearrange the furniture around its looming presence; but the fact is, this elephant is not leaving any time soon. At first we talked weeks, then months, now years.

What does this mean to us locally?

What is the road to recovery that we need to build?

In addressing the impacts of COVID-19, I will necessarily venture into areas of provincial and federal jurisdiction. The problems resulting from the pandemic also cross ward boundaries; so must our Town's efforts to cope with the consequences. I'll begin with the immediate and pressing concern of school reopening plans.

Parents and students have been

faced with a difficult decision: return to the classroom and assume the high probability risk that the increased contact and exposure Colleen Kenyon. will lead to reDON RICKERS surgence of the virus we have worked so hard to control; or keep kids home, and continue to manage the disruption to their education, and to their parents’ work lives, that was felt deeply from March to July. As a community, we need to do our part to support students and their families, no matter which option they choose.

Here’s what we can do in Ward 1: Ensure that every student and work-from-home parent has access to the broadband they need for the demands of online school and work.

Find creative ways to repurpose and multipurpose community space as learning space. This includes creating outdoor classrooms on some of Pelham’s abundance of land. And of course, the library will become an even more valued resource in Ward 1.

Call to service our “volunteer corps”: educators, counsellors, librarians, nurses, coaches, trades people, and other members of the community who are retired, or able to carve out a bit of time to give to students. A significant increase of staffing in schools will be required; however, volunteers with relevant professional skills can help to fill the gaps and make social distancing possible. They

could work with students either virtually or with all recommended protective measures in place.

Develop a new assortment of safe extracurricular programs that will make it possible for students to let go of their expectations of how school used to be, and to feel hopeful about the school experience still ahead of them.

Without the range of music, drama, art, and sports activities that were part of school life in the past, this generation of students will suffer, both in physical and mental health.

As a community, we have it within our means to create new options and support them through this.

Our recent graduates have seen their plans for the future disrupted, and their dreams deflated.

Each generation may have gone through hard times, but none of us has lived through a global pandemic of this scale before. This is a time, more than ever, when seniors and youth (and everyone in between) need to lean on one another and show empathy and understanding. Finding ways to connect students to older members of the community will benefit everyone involved.

On the other side, farmers have been left without sufficient work force. Where and how we spend our money has changed. Businesses have closed, nonessential services have ceased.

And even if this were only for a time, it’s likely to be for another time again. So, how do we, as a community, help our local farmers, producers, business owners to weather the storm?

We can change our buying habits and show a commitment to shopping locally. Avoid funneling money out of the community and out of the country when we could be getting what we need right here. This will also move us towards a way of shopping that reduces our carbon footprint, and the damage that large scale consumerism does to the environment. Online shopping does not preclude buying local. Small business owners in Pelham have been creative in setting up ways to order for delivery or curb- side pick up. And of course, it’s easy to don a mask when you stop at a roadside produce stand. We can also be more mindful when choosing groceries on a weekly shop-up. Last week, I overheard a conversation between a cashier and a customer about the astronomical price of a bag of cherries. Those cherries were

I’m in no way suggesting that school populations are the only ones for which this pandemic has

from the U.S. They were expensive because cherry season here is done. So, what’s the answer? Buy nectarines and peaches instead.

And then buy apples. Buy what's in season, and what your own community has produced. Put the money in your neighbour’s pocket. Eat zucchinis instead of avocados. Help Pelham spend its way out of these hard times.

We should keep in mind that some members of our community were experiencing hard times even before COVID-19 came along.

A neighbour who works in social services once said to me that it’s easy to forget in a town like Pelham that there are people who are precariously housed, whose basic needs are not met. Now, more than ever, we need to safeguard these vulnerable members of our community. We have a fabulous organization that does just this: Pelham Cares. Run by a dedicated staff made up primarily of volunteers, Pelham Cares provides a model for the safety net we should have in place during this pandemic for those who might need it most. Affordable housing, municipal subsidies, employment opportunities that pay a livable wage are other supports that it is within our power to provide.

The first and most obvious consequence of the pandemic was the loss of health and of lives across communities large and small.

In 2017, the Province of Ontario created the Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling (OMCC) grant program to help fund capital works projects for municipalities to improve cycling in their community. Technology makes on-demand public transit a reality Public-private partnership to optimize rural service

West Niagara’s new transit program, a one-year pilot project that connects Pelham with the four corners of the region, was unveiled last Wednesday at a ceremony involving local politicians at the Meridian Community Centre.

Niagara Regional Transit (NRT) has partnered with Via Mobility to operate a ride-sharing service called NRT OnDemand, in partnership with local sub-municipalities. Passengers can book by telephone (289302-2172) or use a smartphone app to arrange a ride within their area, or use the service to connect with a transit hub in Welland, St. Catharines, or Port Colborne to continue their journey.

He frequently kept dinner warm for an extra half hour while Judy made sure the caterpillars were fed and safe for the night. He plans to build a wood and mesh habitat for Judy to continue raising caterpillars and butterflies in 2021.

Judy Hagadorn has appreciated the project for helping her to pass the time during the COVID-19 lockdown while also allowing her to aid monarch conservation efforts. The care and feeding of the caterpillars from egg to adult stage has given her an opportunity to observe some interesting behaviour, such as caterpillars (described as

“feisty”) bickering over leaves, and butterflies with distinct personalities. Some butterflies were energetic, while others seemed more laid back.

Hagadorn says that it feels good to save monarchs and give them a safe and healthy place to form a chrysalis and emerge without fear of predators or pesticides. After releasing them, she “misses them when they are gone,” especially after raising them from the egg stage.

She looks forward to raising more butterflies next year and after the last of this year’s group have emerged and are released, will focus on her other COVID project, sewing masks. As her caterpillars grew and shed their skin, both Judy and Wayne noticed that their face sheddings looked like tiny little masks.

“They have their own masks to protect them from COVID,” said Wayne with a chuckle.

Sexual assault charges against a former Fonthill doctor will proceed as one court case, despite his defense lawyers’ application to have the charges split.

The decision was rendered via audio conference at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines, last Thursday, August 27. The case had been delayed due to COVID closures.

The presiding judge ruled to dismiss the application by Duncan attorneys Jill Makepeace and Michael DelGobbo for severance of one count against Duncan. The case now goes to Justice Fergus O'Donnell for a judicial pretrial next week, and then to trial in St. Catharines on Tuesday, October 13, 10 AM, in Courtroom 1.

Duncan, 76, who practiced family medicine in Pelham for decades, resigned from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario last October, after the college commenced an investigation into allegations against

Duncan agreed to never reapply for registration as a physician in Ontario or any other jurisdiction, and to ask the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) to deactivate his billing number.

After one of his alleged assault victims told her story to the Voice last autumn, several more women came forward with similar allegations. Only after a Voice editorial ran questioning the Niagara Regional Police’s apparent inaction in the face of the multiple allegations was Duncan formally charged and arrested, last November.

The Crown is pursuing charges related to five females, and the NRPS have laid a total of seven charges of sexual assault and one of sexual exploitation. Duncan was first arrested and charged in relation to two separate alleged incidents involving a 16-year-old girl and a 39-year-old woman.

Three more women later came forward, aged between 54 and 64, alleging offenses which took place between Aug. 31, 1994, and Sept. 31, 2018.

Neither the Crown nor Duncan’s defense team had responded to requests for comment by press time.

After 50 years, it’s farewell

It was a bittersweet occasion for Janet and Laverne Tritton recently, as their 21 children and grandchildren dropped by 1150 Maple Street in Fenwick for a farewell party.

Moving day was Mondayt. The stately house on half an acre, built in 1900 by contractor and businessman Louis Haney, has been the Tritton home for 50 years.

Haney hired a landscape architect from Toronto to design extensive gardens on the property in the 1930s, which included fountains, statues (cherubs representing the four seasons), and a fish pond. They are still intact in the back yard, but no lon-

ger functional. The barn is still clad in the original tin siding that came from Haney’s hardware store, which opened in 1915.

Janet and Laverne are downsizing to a townhouse in Welland, and thus many treasured mementos and pieces of furniture simply had to go. Their daughter Lisa placed advertisements, and soon flocks of people from across Niagara and beyond descended on the house to claim antique items.

A collector drove all the way from Kingston to get two mission chairs.

New “Jaws of Life” tools pack a big bite

When Pelham firefighters arrive at the scene of an automobile collision as first responders, they will now have the most technologically advanced rescue equipment available to extricate crash victims, thanks to the recent purchase of two Hurst eDraulic extractors.

Known as the Jaws of Life, the tools are 42 inches long, and weigh a bit over 50 pounds.

They are a combination device, since they can cut, spread, and crush metal. The units have a spread force of some 11,000 pounds.

“It’s a very versatile tool…not just for car crashes, but a range of rescue applications for firefighters,” said Chief Bob Lymburner.

The extractors cost $18,000 each.

Adam Arbour, District Chief of Station 2 in Fenwick, said that training will be underway soon for firefighters on the new gear.

Until then, the current extractors, which are about a decade old, will still be used. He said the extractors are employed about a dozen times a year at Station 2, and additionally by firefighters at other stations in Pelham.

Every emergency call that involves an automobile extrication will be responded to by firefighters with one of the devices.

Unlike the previous generation of extractors, which were tethered to a long hose and compressor to power the hydraulics, the Jaws of Life eDraulic extractors require no hoses or external power unit, being powered by rechargeable batteries. They have narrower jaw tips than the current generation of tools, which allow them to penetrate tighter seams and joints to tear open metal obstructions, and they are more powerful, according to the manufacturer.

Lookout juniors sweep boys player of year honours Big day for Martel brothers at Beechwood

A second-place finish at Beechwood last Monday helped Matthew Martel sew-up under-19 boys player of the year honours on the Niagara Junior Golf Tour.

“I remember starting this tour and playing against kids like Nolan [Piazza], Ben [MacLean] and Luke [DelGobbo]. I never thought that I would not only win some events, but I would actually win the tour one year,” the Lookout Point member said. “It is kind of crazy looking back three years later.”

The Fonthill resident did a number of things well to win the overall points crown and tournament titles at Legends on the Niagara Battlefield, Willodell and Rolling Meadows. He also tied for first at Grand Niagara.

“For the most part, I played pretty consistently and when it was going bad I did well not to lose my cool and kind of explode,” the Grade 12 student at Notre Dame said.

“I just went out there and focused on having fun and not taking it too seriously to the extent that it is not even enjoyable any more.”

Having fun is key to Martel’s success.

“For me, I find that when I get really frustrated I have a tendency to spiral.

You have to take a look at the tournaments for what they are: a great experience and a good place to hone your skills.”

He feels the biggest improvements he made this season were in his short game and his overall play.

He has yet to make up his mind where his golf career will take him.

“I definitely would like to take a look at getting into the States but I wouldn’t sacrifice my education for it,” he said. “Unless I got a really good offer, I would probably stay in Canada and maybe play on whatever school’s golf team I end up going to.”

Martel was delighted to see his younger brother Michael win the overall points crown in the under-15 division.

“For him, it was a bit of a tougher road this year than in years past but it’s kind of cool that we would both end up winning it in the same year.”

Hudson Mielko, a 15-year-old Grimsby resident, recorded his first ever victory in the under-17/19 division after winning at Rockway Glen last year in the under-15 division. His 71 at Beechwood was one shot better than Martel.

“It is a very big thrill to win,” the Grade 10 student at Blessed Trinity said.

“I wasn’t expecting much coming into the tournament because I felt like I wasn’t ready to shoot very well. I guess everything clicked.”

Heading into the tournament, the Lookout Point member fired rounds of 85 and 83.

“My swing wasn’t really there for the past couple of rounds that I had.”

Monday’s win will be a large boost of confidence heading into 2021.

“That shows that I am able to compete with the people that are out here and it shows that I have a chance.”

He has seen his iron play improve significantly this season.

“They are much longer than they were last year and I have gained about

20 yards distance,” he said. “And they have been straight as an arrow.”

The Grade 7 student at St. Alexander came second in the only junior tour event he played in last year before committing to the tour fulltime in 2020.

“When I played in the tournament last year, I really enjoyed it a lot,” the Lookout Point m e mb e r said.

“I usually play soccer but there was no soccer this year and I needed something to keep

me busy.”

Soccer’s loss will now become golf’s gain.

“I’m quitting soccer next year so that I can do the tour again,” Kian said. “I just love it not knowing what can happen coming into the day. One day you play bad and the next day you play really, really good.”

He feels it was improvements in his short game that led to his unexpected success this summer.

“I did surprise myself a little after the first two or three tournaments.”

Bruce McAlpine owns a successful pharmacy in Smithville, but during his daily drives through Fonthill on his way to work (he lives in St. Catharines with his family) he was struck by the growth in Pelham.

He made up his mind to expand to a second store.

That plan came to fruition recently, as he opened his Pharmasave Pelham Hills location in the plaza at the corner of Pelham Street and Welland Road.

Born in Mississauga, McAlpine earned his pharmacy degree at the University of Toronto, and then went to work at a pharmacy in Beamsville for eight years. He worked with Big V and Shoppers Drug Mart for a while, and then had an opportunity to manage a pharmacy for WalMart, before returning to Shoppers as an associate to own two stores, and owned a pharmacy in Welland from 2007-2013.

Bonhoeffer died by hanging on April 9, 1945, at age 39. Hitler died by suicide three weeks later at age 56. Both men had struggled and fought for their opposing visions. Then a white Buick was beside us, with two mature adults in it and two gravel bikes on the roof. What was their story?

1. Were they pretenders, too far out of the loop to know that gravel-bikers don’t drive Buicks?

2. Perhaps they did know that gravel bikers don’t drive Buicks, but with 14 payments still to go on the Buick, they wisely chose new bikes over a new pick-up?

3. “What does what I drive damned well have to do with anything anyhow, eh?”

Wait, this was a reflection of ourselves in the glass windows of a minibus in the next lane. That is not part of the quiz.

A Chrysler van went by with three kid bikes suitable for ages 7 – 11 on the back rack. How sweet.

1. Was it a happy family heading to Lake of Two Rivers campground in Algonquin Park, where the parents hoped to put the kids on their bikes and tell them to go make new friends, thus putting the onus on

everyone else in the campground to babysit them?

2. Did the three kids take driving lessons on Zoom, pack their suitcases, steal their parents’ van, then attempt a desperate escape before they had to go back to school?

3. Is this whole family trying to locate the grandparents, who have inexplicably disappeared off the face of the earth after a summer of “Could you just take the grandkids for one more day...please?”

Then we heard a rumble from behind, approaching frighteningly fast and illegally along the paved shoulder.

The front bumper’s bull-bar grille guard appeared in our rear view mirror first, big enough to push aside anything but a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Then we saw the brutal black Maxxis Trepador mud tires, howling on the pavement beside my wife’s open window. A momentary respite was next, because seated as we were in the Buick, we could see under the truck’s running boards to farm fields beyond as its cab passed high above us. Next came the truck’s rear wheels, taking their turn reverberating through our windows while the exhaust growled from an outlet bigger than a sewer pipe. A stainless steel rear bumper

dared anyone to follow too closely, and then the monster truck was past us.

Three gorgeous mountain bikes, long-suspension forks and front wheels hanging in perfect symmetry from a Fox tailgate protector, were in the truck’s box.

My heart skipped a beat, my face flushed, and I suddenly felt my masculinity draining into the floor mats of the Buick. No one could “bring it” more than the crew in that truck.

by Red Bull somewhere north of Sudbury?

2. Were the girls in the truck late for a ride-in only service at the Vankoughnet Church of the Singletrack?

3. Had they decided yesterday to park in Timmins and ride their bikes to James Bay because why not?

Quick as it had begun, the traffic jam was over, and we were on our way. Our game was finished for the day, with only the scoring to be completed. Ten is a perfect score, and it really doesn’t matter how you add up the numbers to get there.

Nine or better, and you’ve clearly got us cyclists and our vehicles all figured out. ◆

The program officially kicked off on August 17.

The vehicles are new Toyota Sienna vans, luxuriously appointed, with seating for eight, and bike racks on the rear bumper. Wheelchair access is available. Plexiglass barriers have been installed for COVID safety, and all travellers must wear a mask. The vehicle will be cleaned regularly during the day.

In his remarks, Pelham Mayor Marvin Junkin heaped praise on Vickie van Ravenswaay, Pelham’s Director of Recreation, Culture & Wellness, for spearheading Pelham transit projects over the past several years. Pelham received grant money which helped see a steady increase in ridership.

“In 2019, Vicki got us more money, a half-million dollar grant over five years, and our ridership soared to 7,900,” said Junkin.

He referred to the NRT/Via Mobility transit partnership as a “giant step” and a “game changer,” especially for local seniors.

Niagara Region Chair Jim Bradley remarked that the program is flexible and practical.

“We could have empty buses going up and down the streets,” he said. “But this program allows a personalized, reliable service for medical appointments or shopping at an affordable price.”

Pelham has a significant rural population, and the program was touted as a benefit not just for seniors without a personal vehicle, but also local students eager to travel to Brock University and Niagara College on a regular

basis. Politicians are hailing the NRT OnDemand program as a blueprint for the future of transit in Niagara, and suggest it will be popular with residents in Grimsby, Pelham, Lincoln, West Lincoln, and Wainfleet.

The booking process is simple. Travellers select a pickup and drop-off location.

Once a ride is booked, Via’s system matches multiple passengers headed in the same direction and directs passengers to a nearby corner, or “virtual bus stop.” Rides within Pelham are three dollars, while a lift outside of town is priced at six dollars. Drivers don’t accept payments or cash fares. Instead, riders pay in advance by credit card or pre-paid debit using the app.

NRT OnDemand service is available Monday through Saturday from 7 AM until 10 PM. Pickups generally occur at locations a short walk from a rider’s home. Children under 13 need to be accompanied by an adult during OnDemand travel. There are small charges for cancellation of trips once booked, and wait times can potentially be up to an hour.

Via had its birth in New York City seven years ago, and operates in the United States and Europe through a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz, using MB vans. Today it has 100 partnerships in 20 countries with taxi fleets, colleges and universities, and both public and private transit companies. According to its marketing materials, Via has “enabled a re-engineering of conventional schedules and rigid routes using smartphone technology.”

The partnership with Via Mobility is “taxpayer-friendly,” in that Via is providing the vehicles and drivers rather than this cost being borne by the public transit system. In addition to taking on the entire capital outlay, Via also handles all the logistics of the program, which it asserts helps keep fares low.

“That was my mother's, and the lady is going to use it in her bed and breakfast.”

A fellow from Dundas bought an old coal oil lamp, circa 1800, that had a ceramic bottom with a picture of a gorilla. When he took it apart to clean it, he discovered a letter inside, written

by Laverne’s father.

“He offered to bring it back to us, so we gave him his money back plus a bonus for being so honest,” said Janet.

Laverne grew up on Church Street in Fenwick, and Janet moved with her family to Canboro Road in 1951.

They attended Pelham High School together, but didn’t commence dating until 1959.

They married in 1960.

“We moved to Memorial Drive for five years, and then had to relocate to Hamilton for a couple years while Laverne was working for the railway,” said Janet. “We found out that 1150 Maple was for sale, and remembered when we were dating we used to pass by and admire the house. We

DON RICKERS ended up buying it, and raising four kids here.”

Louis Haney died at a relatively young age, but his widow lived in the house until 1958.

“The people who had it for the 12 years before we bought it, they didn’t do a thing to the place,” lamented Laverne. “It was in rough shape when we got it. Broken windows and such. Everybody thought we were crazy to buy it,” he said with a laugh.

But they could see the potential in the property, and decided to restore it to its former glory.

Inside, the rooms were strewn with boxes, evidence of an impending move. But the heritage home’s features — chestnut trim and flooring, elaborate fireplace, leaded glass windows — reveal its legacy. The bathrooms feature glazed tile and mosaic floors, and household fixtures of the era.

“My mother brought me here a couple of times to see that the fish pond and the flowers when it was Mrs. Haney’s place,” said Laverne. “It was a labor of love for her to keep the place looking nice.”

Bonhoeffer's struggle

T

he German phrase “mein kampf” means “my struggle” or “my fight.”

It was the title of Adolf Hitler’s book, an autobiographical account of his vision for Germany. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was also German and a younger contemporary of Hitler’s. None of his books were entitled “Mein Kampf,” but he too had a vision for Germany that he struggled mightily to fulfill. Their lives were polar opposites.

Hitler’s struggle

Adolf Hitler was born in 1889 in Austria. He was 36 when volume one of his “Mein Kampf” (1925) was published and volume two came out a year later. It was a manifesto of his political ideology and future plans for Germany. He had lots of time to write since he was incarcerated in a Munich jail in Bavaria (southern Germany) at the time. Unfortunately for the world, Hitler only served nine months of a five-year sentence for treason for his part in a failed “putsch” (violent coup) to overthrow the government. Too bad they didn’t keep him behind bars for life.

The book didn’t sell well until Hitler came to power eight years later, in 1933.

Then it became a bestseller.

During the Nazi regime, every newlywed couple and every soldier fighting on the front was given a free copy.

When World War II started in 1939 it had sold over five million copies in 11 languages. By war’s end about ten million copies were in circulation.

The book describes how Hitler became increasingly anti-Semitic and militaristic. He believed the world’s two evils were communism and Judaism. In reality, he

and his poisonous ideology were emerging as the world’s greatest evils. Hitler wrote about the “Jewish peril,”a perceived Jewish conspiracy to gain world leadership. In reality, he was the greatest peril.

Hitler’s goal was to create a new order in Germany. He believed in the “survival of the fittest,” which justified the elimination of the “weak” (disabled) or “undesirable” (Jews, Slavs, gypsies, homosexuals) in order to promote the “strong.” In effect, he was applying a warped version evolutionary theory to political theory.

Hitler had served in World War I as an infantryman.

Most of his regiment was wiped out. He survived. After Germany’s humiliating defeat in World War I, he wanted to restore Germany’s greatness. This was his struggle and it plunged the world into another bloody war.

Match Game—Highway 400 Edition

M

y wife and I were headed north on the much-beloved construction site called Highway 400, destined to do some gravel cycling on Muskoka’s back roads, when traffic stopped dead.

Minutes later, as we crawled north at 12-15 km/ hour, mind-numbingly bored because any potential topics of conversation between us had been totally exhausted during all our previous COVID “together time,” a BMW X5 passed us in the next lane with a Pinarello Dogma bicycle on its rear rack.

I must admit I’m not a

Pinarello expert. Believe me, I appreciate a dishy bike, but there are limits. Spending north of ten grand on a bicycle eludes even me. Consequently, I can’t tell you if it was a DOGMA F12 Disk AXS ETAP ($13,500 US without pedals) or the DOGMA F10 Disk Daytona Pro+ ($11,199 US without pedals).

So began our new Highway 400 travel game: Guess the Story Behind the Bike on the Vehicle.

Play along if you wish; each answer is equal in points to its sequence number: 1, 2, or 3.

The windows of the BMW were tinted, of course, so we were gender blind, further increasing the scope of

our speculation.

If it was a guy, he’d be tanned, dark haired and clean shaven, but no buzz cut or shaved head.

That would be so last year, and defeat the purpose of the bike. If it was a woman, she’d be blond with a pony tail and Ralph sunglasses, yet much more intelligent than the male cyclists she so often had to endure.

It was unlikely the driver was going to a race or Fondo— everything is cancelled because of COVID. Why did this person have that envy-inducing Dogma on their bike rack?

1. Were they meeting someone? Could that someone be a titan of industry or a movie star who had traded their Callaways and cigarette boat for bicycle racing?

2. Did they actually ride the bike, or had the BMW dealer been out of specialty wheels to personalize the X5,

The steering wheel on the right, lack of trees, and the fog suggest Scotland. Hey, this is a fun game! BIGSTOCK and suggested mounting the Dogma would make the SUV even more unique?

3. Was it as simple as just being able to take pleasure in an exquisite work of art, and wanting it with you?

This new game was such fun we could hardly wait for the next vehicle with bikes to come into view.

Then

it appeared, the most badass black Jeep Rubicon you can imagine, and on its rear rack was a stunningly vivid, neon-green Trek. I couldn’t tell the model of the bike, but it was a perfect match to the woman behind the wheel of the Jeep.

continued from Page 7 to occur remind us how vulnerable we are to this virus. We are learning more about both its short-term and long-term effects on the human body, young or old. With passing months, our initial fear of catching coronavirus has given way to concern for the faltering economy, for the isolation and separation from family and friends, for the sacrifice of daily routines that we didn’t know we valued until we lost them. We need to support community health. To do so, we should think about establishing immediate access to health care for both physical and mental health emergencies. This could mean establishing a walk-in clinic in Pelham, or at least a means of making online or telephone contact 24/7 with health professionals located right in our community.

The Voice, September 2, 2020 We have yet to experience what it will be like to deal with COVID-19 once the weather turns cold and icy. In a medical or mental health emergency, there would be comfort in knowing that help is close at hand.

Our municipality has received COVID relief funding from both the provincial and federal governments, and council will need to make judicious decisions about how this first infusion can be best used for social and economic recovery. The Town will apply for the second phase of the federal-provincial “Safe Restart Agreement” before October 30th. A compelling case needs to be made for what we, as a Town, can accomplish with this money. The intent is that it will help municipalities see their way through the COVID-19 crisis. On August 26, the prime minister also announced that Ontario will receive $763.3 million dollars to help schools

reopen safely. As a small town, we need to advocate for ourselves to ensure that a fair share of this funding comes our way. Through consultation with you, the constituents, my job on council will be to make sure that Ward 1 sees the intended effects of relief funding in ways that reach rural Pelham.

Let’s make the most of the summer weeks we still have ahead of us. The elephant can enjoy the room while we enjoy the patio. If we use this time wisely, we can arm ourselves with resources and new ways of operating that will put us in the best position possible as we pass through autumn into winter. Preventative action now will hopefully mean less yearning for how things were in the past, and more looking forward to how they’ll be in the future. And, with any luck, we can find joy in life as we move along the road to recovery. ◆

OPP busts “significant” illegal cannabis network

BY VOICE STAFF A large-scale illegal cannabis production and distribution network has been shut down by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and partners after a 12-month investigation. Several residents of the Niagara Region and GTA are facing numerous charges, according to an OPP statement released Friday, August 21.

“A criminal enterprise exploiting the Health Canada medical, personal and designate cannabis production regime was uncovered by the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS),” read the statement.

“The operation to divert cannabis authorized to be grown for medical purposes to the illegal market has been dismantled.”

“Project Woolrich” was initiated a year ago, in August 2019, after separate investigations presented evidence of criminality, according to the OPP. Several agencies were involved in the effort, including

the Provincial Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team (PJFCET), OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB), the Provincial Asset Forfeiture Unit (PAFU), Niagara Regional Police, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Border Enforcement Security Taskforce (BEST) and HSI Toronto, FINTRAC, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

The targets identified by the investigation were allegedly involved in the production, wholesale distribution and sale of illegal cannabis. The OPP says that investigators seized shipments of illegal cannabis destined for the US as well as two large shipments of US currency destined for Canada. The accused were also allegedly responsible for large-volume shipments of illegal cannabis from British Columbia to Ontario.

While the OPP says that the accused are not members of known organized crime groups, “they are certainly a criminal enterprise

with a large-scale, sophisticated operation.”

The OPP says that the enterprise exploited Health Canada registrations intended to produce cannabis for medical purposes to instead use them for illegal purposes.

The OPP's role is to enforce and investigate criminal cannabis incidents and focus on the apprehension of those who produce, sell, distribute, import/export and use cannabis outside of the parameters of both the provincial and federal legislation.

Last Thursday, August 13, investigators from several agencies executed 26 warrants in various Ontario locations including Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Jordan, Simcoe, Markham, Canfield, Welland, Leamington, Scarborough, and Richmond Hill, as well as in British Columbia. As a result, investigators have arrested eight individuals for numerous charges including distribution, production and sale of cannabis under the Cannabis Act, as well as charges

under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and the Criminal Code of Canada. The OPP says that the investigation is ongoing and a “complete list with names and associated charges will be released in the coming days.”

The accused have been released, and will appear in a St. Catharines courtroom on September 17.

The OPP says that the investigation includes the seizure/restraint

of: • 101,049 illegal cannabis plants; • 1,921 pounds of illegal cannabis bud; • 21 pounds of illegal cannabis shatter; • Two (2) ounces of cocaine; • Three (3) pounds of illegal cannabis hash; • 22 pounds of illegal cannabis oil; • Hundreds of illegal cannabis vape pens; • Six (6) firearms including two .22 pistols, one 9mm Glock, one AR 15 assault rifle and two shotguns; • Grow equipment worth more than $1 million; • Numerous high-end jewellery items; • Four vehicles; • More than $2.5 million in Canadian currency; • $580,828 in US currency; and • $379,383 in Chinese and South Korean currency.

The total duty loss for the illegal cannabis seized is estimated at more than $42 million dollars.
