Town Council draws "line in the sand" Pelham says it will no longer cooperate with Region's review of Town finances BY SARAH WHITAKER and DAVE BURKET
The VOICE
The Town of Pelham has drawn a “line in the sand” over allegations of impropriety within the financing of the new Community Centre and an alleged development charges scheme. Councillors approved, unanimously, a motion that states Council and staff "categorically deny all allegations"; that the Town will no long participate
in the Region's review of Pelham's finances, as "it lies outside their sphere of jurisdiction"; and which demands the review "be ended immediately.” "They have no business in our business," said Councillor Peter Papp, who seconded the motion, noting that Town Council, not Regional Council, is legally and legislatively responsible for what happens with the Town's finances. Councillor Gary Accursi tabled the motion following a presentation by
CAO Darren Ottaway in response to a July interview with the developer Rainer Hummel, published in the Voice, as well as Hummel’s late June presentation to the Region regarding his concerns over Pelham's financing of the Community Centre. Ottaway, accompanied by Town solicitor Callum Shedden, went through each "key fact" one-by-one, asserting that all but one of the 28 claims made
EING ACQUAINTED with the editor of the local paper might ensure timely delivery, but the flip side is that you’re an easy target for a Column 6 badgering—I mean invitation. This is especially true when the editor discovers you’ve had what many would consider a very interesting career, one that should surely be chock-full of interesting events. In fact, I do consider myself extremely lucky to have had two of the best jobs in the world. I call it my 20/20 career. The first 20 years I spent as a fighter pilot in the RCAF (by far the best job) followed by 20 years as a commercial airline pilot (second-best job). Although there are a plethora of stories to choose from (some humorous, some tragic), I’ve decided to recount my one-week adventure aboard the USS Ranger aircraft carrier, one of the highlights of my aviation career. Please fasten your safety harnesses. In the spring of 1989 I was stationed in Cold Lake Alberta, flying the F-18

$100 million here, $100 million there, it's only money
BY DAVE BURKET Rainer Hummel, the real estate developer who called out the Town of Pelham’s now abandoned land-forcredits scheme, says that he is prepared to spend $50,000 from his own pocket to commission an independent, third-party audit of the Town’s books pertaining to its controversial East Fonthill financing and land acquisition practices. Hummel makes the offer in an Op-Ed appearing in this week’s edition. The developer found himself the target last week of CAO Darren Ottaway. In a lengthy presentation in front of Town Council during its regular meeting on September 5, Ottaway sought to discredit the assertions Hummel made in testimony before Regional Council in June and in an extended interview with the Voice in July. After Ottaway’s presentation, Council passed a resolution stating that the Town would no longer cooperate with the Regional Audit Committee’s scrutiny of its East Fonthill finances, a move that has provoked sharp criticism. Our story on the meeting, Council’s decision, and Regional response to it starts on this page. Hummel’s Op-Ed, and reader comment, appears on page 4.
