other Nature received a round of applause from competitors in the second Mudfest Challenge of the year.

A downpour just hours before made life miserable, chilly and exciting for those who took on the six kilometre course at Bissell’s Hideaway – the second event in a few months.

“What we did in May was more of a trial run while this was intended to be our main show and Mother Nature cooperated with us perfectly,” volunteer co-coordinator Carolyn Mullin said.

“She gave us so much rain that the obstacles didn’t even need to be adjusted on the day of the event.”

Over 120 participants climbed, crawled and ran through the slick course, with plenty of stumbles along the way.

While some went at their own pace, others challenged each other for pride in an event to raise money for Pelham Cares Home for Good Capital Campaign.

“What we heard from competitors in May was that they wanted more obstacles and more mud,” Mullin said.

“The response from those who’ve finished the Mudfest Challenge today have been nothing but positive so we’ll aim to have something similar in the Spring.

Although it was the second challenge of the year, volunteers saw an increase of newcomers, including Jan Reid and Janice Durand.

The two began training over a year ago with the intent to enter one of the rugged-terrain-style courses. The pair and their team finished the course, crossing off another item on their bucket list.

“This is something the two of us decided to do and it was truly amazing as we never imagined doing something like this,” Reid said.

“The course was definitely a slip-and-slide style with all the rain but that just added another aspect of excitement to the day.”

Durand and Reid both said they were hesitant with all the heights, climbing hydro poles and roping up a steep hill, but enjoyed every minute spent trucking through the mud.

“The hardest part of it was to actually do it,” Durand said. “The obstacles were challenging but to have the confidence and the nerve to actually sign-up and do it, is amazing for us.”

Durand thought the idea of helping others while playing in the mud was the perfect mix.

“It’s nice to give back to people who aren’t as fortunate as we are. To be able to help out while having fun and being healthy just makes for an overall perfect experience that everyone should try at least once.”

For those who missed their chance this year, they will not have to wait long, said Mullin.

With other events happening in Niagara on the same weekend as last – including Run or Dye and the Big Move Cancer Ride – organizers are aiming to keep the annual event in May.

Clerk takes voters list to market

for the VOICE At the Pelham Farmers Market last Thursday, a shopper stopped at a Town of Pelham booth.

He wanted to know what it was all about.

It was all about the Monday Oct. 27 municipal election, said deputy clerk Jordan Mammoliti.

She explained the maps covering the table showed the town’s three wards and the numbered polls for each.

A large binder contained the list of electors, or the voters list, including voters’ addresses and poll locations.

Her visitor was a new resident. He was not on the list.

The deputy clerk signed him up on the spot.

This is the second election during which the clerk’s department has set up at the evening market, said town clerk Nancy Bozzato, who is also the returning officer for the election.

It worked well last time, she said. It allows residents who can’t make it to town hall during regular 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. office hours to chat with staff. The market runs Thursday evening from 4:30 p.m. to dusk beside the municipal building in Fonthill.

The voters list became available last week. Residents can check it at town hall.

As of this week, they can also go online at the town’s website www.pelham.ca under 2014 Election.

A program called VoterLookup.ca, created by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation, allows residents to check if they are on the list.

Everyone should check their information, said Bozzato.

New residents or those who moved since the last election in 2010 may not be registered correctly, she said.

For this election, the boundaries of the town’s three wards have changed. So have the numbers and locations of polling stations. “We are now closer to representation by population,� said Bozzato, “although Ward 1 is physically much larger.�

Ward 1, Fenwick and rural Pelham, now has 4,597 voters, Ward 2 in north Fonthill 4,438 and Ward 3 in south Fonthill 4,865.

The town has 13,900 registered voters living in 6,329 households.

Community garden to sprout at Pelham Arena

This land along the entrance to the Pelham Arena parking lot will contain a 21-plot community garden next year.

Sheryl Pitre hopes to start soil work on a new community garden at the Pelham Arena this fall.

Town council last week approved a business plan and location for the 21-plot garden.

The garden, measuring 102-feet long and 31-feet wide, will be south of the arena parking lot and east of the building.

The autumn digging and fertilizing will get the soil ready for installing the garden in the spring of 2015, said Pitre, of Pelham Communities in Bloom.

Her committee in partnership with the Pelham Horticultural Society and Green Niagara will oversee the community garden.

They made a presentation to town council last week outlining finances and research behind the project.

Each of the 10-by-5-foot plots will be rented to those interested in gardening but do not have land.

Organizers expect users will be people living in apartments such as seniors, singles and young families. They will grow organic vegetables or flowers.

Among the plots will be two elevated for accessibility to wheelchairs users.

The business plan calls for a spending of $6,825 in the first year to set up the garden.

Expenses include installation of a waterline, equipment rental, lumber, hardware, compost bins, compost delivery, shed, bench, picnic tables, landscape cloth, watering cans and gardening tools.

The town will cover start-up costs. It had put $10,000 in its 2014 budget said town treasurer Cari Pupo.

Pitre said the arena site was chosen for the garden because it was centrally located, well lit, has appropriate drainage, a good mix of sun and shade, public washrooms and lots of parking.

Among other sites considered were school lands, Peace Park, Centennial Park, Harold Black Park and downtown Fenwick. Each had drawbacks.

The three partners want create a green space within the town accessible to all residents to grow their own organic food.

Users would also share knowledge, get exercise and develop a sustainable ongoing project.

The horticultural society will instruct new gardeners.

Green Niagara, which has assisted 15 community gardens, will provide organizational advice and workshops.

The public land for the community garden will be leased from the town.

Update on “construction season” in Pelham Now that we are fully into “construction season” in Pelham, I thought I would give you an update on progress.

“Uptown Fonthill” Reconstruction: You will recall that the Region leading the reconstruction of Regional Road 20 from Peachtree Park to Lookout Street, and of Haist Street from Canboro Road to Highway 20.

These works include adding bike lanes and sidewalks, upgrading the watermain, road reconstruction, and a new traffic signal. As part of our ongoing efforts to rid the Town of break-prone, cast-iron watermains, the Town asked the contractor to replace the watermain from just east of Pelham Street.

The contractor also completed the replacement of the watermain on Highway 20 between Pinecrest and Haist; now they will work on connecting individual properties. The watermain on Haist Street between Canboro and Highway 20 has been completed, with storm sewer construction underway.

Downtown Fenwick Revitalization: You will recall that this important project includes

reconstructing Canboro Road and parts of Maple and Church Streets and the Welland Road intersection.

Since the contractor is replacing the storm sewers and tying them correctly into systems on adjoining streets, they have undertaken significant “dewatering” to reduce the high water table.

During this dewatering process, standard environments tests identified some hydrocarbons in the soil on Canboro Road; this contamination likely emanated from historic gasoline and oil service centres.

While this may mean higher soil disposal and dewatering costs, work currently continues at the original tender price and on budget.

Since Hydro One continues to bury the electricity lines on Canboro Road and Maple Street, the excavation contractor has commenced storm sewer construction on Church Street. I understand that we may start to see some of the landscaping – like curbs – materializing soon.

Port Robinson Road – Station to Rice: As you know, the Town is continuing to enhance walkability and cycle-ability by reconstructing Port Rob-

inson from Station Street to Rice Road.

In addition to bike lanes, sidewalks on both sides, and road reconstruction, we are also installing sewers to support both existing and future potential development. Folks currently along Port Robinson will have the option to connect to these new sewers.

The contractor has completed more than half of the sanitary sewer and watermain construction. To help overcome chronic drainage issues in the area, the contractor has also begun storm sewer construction at the East-end of the project.

hill; kept the town’s fiscal challenges under control while “re-building” the community with a revitalization of the downtown core, two new fire halls, and improved infrastructure; and positioned Pelham as a place to which people want to come, either to live or visit.

Looking ahead, Papp said he wants to see Pelham develop a transit service within the town. It is a major desire of seniors groups and others in the town.

He said the town has been looking at systems run by companies in smaller communities like Pelham and may bring something forward with 18 months.

A local system could move people around the town and possibly link to a regional transit system, Papp said.

Papp has broad experience in his social service career. Most recently he retired as executive director of the United Way of South Niagara.

For 25 years, he taught a municipal administration program. Students included local citizens who considered running for municipal offices as well as municipal workers preparing for senior positions.

Papp said after three terms on town council, he has the knowledge of the issues facing Pelham now and in the future.

He is a collaborator, he said, and looks forward to working with council, staff and the citizens for the community.

“I dedicate this upcoming re-election to the memory of my dearest Valerie who, even though she will not be here physically, will be here in spirit and will always be an inspiration to me.”

Local band ‘Ivy Coast’ receives three Niagara Music Award nominations Greg Mashinter feels pretty good. His band Ivy Coast is nominated in three categories for the Niagara Music Awards.

Ivy Coast is nominated for Album of the Year, New Group of the Year and Music Video of the Year with their song “Ember”.

Although it’s been less than a year since their self-titled album was released, Mashinter says time seems to have slowed down since then.

“Time goes by differently in a band. Feels like we were in the studio creating the album ages ago, but the entire experience has been really neat. Something you’ve spent months on to be recognized like this is just an honour.”

With connections to Pelham, Wainfleet, and Welland, the band is adjusting to becoming a household name in Niagara.

Mashinter says they began playing in venues where nobody knew who they were, to now, where a following has caught on.

“We’re slowly moving up,” Mashinter, who has played in the past two Summerfests, said.

“Venues where we went to shows as teens are now places we are starting to play at, so it’s been an amazing experience.”

Despite the nominations and show requests, they remain humble. They keep things simple with members now living further apart.

The band continues to build up its profile by sticking with a set line-up of cities to perform in.

“During the first couple listens of the new album, people were questioning the sound we had created. Then eventually people caught on that we were offering something unique and personal to listen to and it’s all gone uphill from there.”

Mashinter, who grew up in Wainfleet, credits the small town atmosphere for

what kind of a person he turned out to be – muscially and in everyday life.

Being in a town of hard-working men and women, encourages him to be a better person while perfecting his craft.

“The entire band is made up of random pieces from all the small communities in Niagara who have come together for one goal,” Mashinter said.

The group will have to wait and see if that goal is in reach with the Niagara Music Awards taking place on Sept. 30 at Taps Brewhouse & Grill.

Niagara Region term report: Health and wellness Past articles have provided an overview of the accomplishments of this term of Niagara Regional Council in terms of tax stability, governance and economic development. This article gives the “people” aspect of regional government as it relates to seniors, families and children as well as health and safety.

Seniors in Niagara are served through day programs and long-term care facilities in eight sites. Provincial mandates require only one long-term care facility. The fact that we have eight homes distributed throughout the region has been beneficial to family and caregivers.

In fact we have nearly a one to one ratio of volunteers to residents because of the proximity of our homes to loved ones.

In this term we introduced Niagara’s first convalescent care program, providing recuperative care to seniors prior to returning home from a hospital stay. We worked with partners to establish the South Niagara Health and Wellness Centre to support seniors at risk of hospitalization.

We invested $8.6 million to redevelop Deer Park Villa, the Region’s 39-bed long-term care facility in Grimsby.

We achieved the highest level of accreditation for our homes from Accreditation Canada. Programs and services are provided annually to help seniors remain independent and in their homes. 98% of regional longterm care residents are satisfied with services.

For children and families, we eliminated the waitlist for child care subsidies, enabling more parents to

work, go to school or train for jobs. The Region provides nearly 3,000 families annually with a child care subsidy.

More than 2,000 children and youth were provided access to sports, recreational and cultural programs through the Prokids program in partnership with YMCA of Niagara. We worked with child care and education partners to transition four and five-year old children into Ontario’s full day Kindergarten program.

We introduced a new physical health and nutrition program to all child care operators with preschoolaged children. The M+B 2B (Mom and Baby-to-Be) program was launched as a free prenatal mobile device which offers information about planning a pregnancy through to birth.

Well Baby Clinics and Parenting Drop-in centres were opened in Niagara Falls, Welland and St.Catharines, providing support and information about baby health and development.

Health and safety promotion are major thrusts for the Public Health and Emergency Services departments. More than 100,000 residents are served annually through Public Health clinics, classes and workshops.

Regional contribution to the new hospital and Walker Family Cancer Centre amounted to $21 million. We established a Niagara EMS Community Response Unit in Wainfleet, to reduce response times and provide comprehensive paramedicine to residents.

The first co-located Niagara Emergency Medical Ser-

vices and Niagara Regional Police Service facility was opened in Fort Erie. Online real-time water quality monitoring was introduced for our public beaches.

We implemented a water quality management system to provide consumers with high quality drinking water and effectively managed all aspects of water treatment and distribution, from source to tap.

We developed and passed a region-wide Smoke-Free Outdoor Spaces by bylaw to protect people from outdoor second-hand smoke. The Mobile Dental Clinic was launched to provide free preventive dental care to children and youth at their schools.

More than one million page views have been seen over the last two years since the introduction of online access to health inspection reports of restaurants, tattoo parlours, hair and nail salons, public pools and spas.

A community-based outreach nursing program has been implemented to address the health concerns of vulnerable resident. A central immunization records system was established to streamline access to data in the event of an outbreak.

These initiatives did not make front page news but collectively add value to the lives of Niagara living up to the slogan of Niagara Region: “Building Community.

Building Lives.”

Pelham High alumni reunite at Lipa Park

From the year book’s first edition on 1933 to the final one in 1974, the Pnyx will entertain the alumni of Pelham District High School at the former high school’s reunion from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at Lipa Park.

for the VOICE More than 300 former students of Pelham District High School will mark the 40th anniversary year the Fenwick’s school closing on Sept. 27.

“We think there will be 300 but you never know,” said organizing committee member Vilma Moretti.

“Many just show up that day and buy a ticket at the door,” she said about trends at the school’s seven previous reunions.

This time, they are meeting at the Lipa Park from 1 pm to 5 p.m. The Slovenian National Home is at 2850

Oillie Road in north Pelham.

“We have lots of room and lots of parking there,” said Moretti.

From 1928 to 1974, students from across the rural areas of Pelham, Wainfleet, West Lincoln and Welland came to Fenwick.

They went through the Depression, the Second World War and the Baby Boom growth period.

“We were the farm kids,” she said, “with a love of sports and other activities.”

In 1957, the school had 1,400 students including 10 Grade 9 classes of 40 kids each, said Moretti.

But the construction of first Thorold-Fonthill High School (now Glynn A. Green Public School) and then E. L. Crossley Secondary School led to a decrease in PDHS enrolment.

Despite strong protest from the Fenwick community, Pelham District High School closed in 1974. Today it is an apartment building at Balfour Street and Canboro Road.

It is the happier days of the school, the alumni and former staff celebrate at the reunions.

The first, held at the former school in 1984, drew 4,000 and left a legacy of a $10,000 scholarship fund that grew to $42,000.

It feeds a pair of $2,000 annual scholarships to E. L. Crossley graduates going to university and community college.

The following reunions drew fewer alumni.

“We are dropping off,” said Moretti of the aging students.

But the memories of sports victories, year-end parties at Long Beach and Morgan’s Point and the friendships developed in the halls of Pelham High remain strong.

“What we can’t remember, we make up,” she said.

“We just have a good time.”

During the Sept 27th reunion, the committee is giving away Pelham High memorabilia that it has accumulated over the years.

Thanks to the Internet, reaching former students has become easier. Google searches, Facebook postings and emailing are less cumbersome that letters and phone calls, said Moretti.

A new Fall program at Pelham Community Church The Pelham Community Church community are getting excited about their new venture this fall, starting on September 22.

All church groups will be reading, hearing and learning the same portion of the Bible each week, using age appropriate curriculum based on ‘The Story’.

They plan to read through the Bible and learn from the 31 Biblical Stories starting in September to May 2015.

‘The Story’ will be perfect for individuals and families and will encourage reading and studying the Bible in Community, as they are also offering this program to pre-school children, ages 4-8, and children ages 9-12, in Sunday School.

There are also groups for teens and adults on Sunday

and during the week. The Sunday morning service at 9:30 am will cover the same portion of the Bible. All are invited to drop in and take part in any one of these programs.

‘The Story’ is an abridged, chronological account from the Bible that reads like a novel but without the verse references of our common Bible versions. The Scriptures are seamlessly woven together with transition text into a single grand narrative. For people intimidated or overwhelmed by the Bible, ‘The Story’ helps all to understand God’s Word more fully and engage with it more easily.

‘See you next summer’

for the VOICE Another summer concert series was in the books for the Fonthill Bandshell Committee as Robin Banks sang the last song for 2014.

With a wide variety of music, the concert series has risen in popularity since its launch almost a decade ago.

A packed Peace Park became normal as weather cooperated each week.

“We thank the audiences for coming down to watch,” Fonthill Bandshell Committee chair Gayle Baltjes-Chataway said.

“You may not know it, but you are a very special audience not only in our eyes, but in the eyes of each musician. We so often hear at the end of the night how nice it is to come to this park and perform for you.”

From Beatles impersonators, to the talented Michael Kaeshammer, the acts continue to get bigger and better.

Baltjes-Chataway says it’s thanks to the kind residents who donate towards the free concert series.

“We are very proud of (those who bought the bandshell wristbands) and contributed by donations each week. This year we’ve actually broken even,” she said.

“With what we anticipate tonight, we’ll be ahead in funding for the first year in a while, so thank you to everyone who helped out.”

While donations are key to their survival, local businesses have stepped in with put sponsorship money.

While their name may be on the programs and announced during the series, their impact has provided a local activity that thousands enjoy over the summer.

It includes the Town of Pelham, who has waived park fees for the bandshell and are expected to renovate the bandshell grounds and Peace Park to make the performances even better to attend.

“We look forward to the upgrades of the park so we will have more level viewing area for our 10th anniversary.”

Baltjes-Chataway says the overall experience has been a community effort. From the volunteers who spend every Thursday in downtown Fonthill, to the local residents who chips in toonies each week, it’s all made possible from a community working together.

“One of the reasons we are so fortunate to get these talented musicians is that the word is out and it’s thanks to everyone involved with making this so special.”

The 2015 Fonthill Bandshell season starts on June 18.

Smyth outlined input from planning staff, town departments, the Niagara Region, provincial documents and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority.

While five-plex proposal would require an amendment to the zoning bylaw, it would fit in with directions to increase “intensification” of housing in an urban area.

However, it had to be “respectful” of the neighbourhood, she said.

Barber said he grew up in Fonthill. He knew the neighbourhood.

He is aware of the demands for intensification and sought to create a quality project in character with the existing dwelling.

Barber pointed out he won an award for the design of similar apartments in a Pelham Street development above a new commercial building.

Justin O’Donnell said the project did not fit into a neighbourhood of single family homes. Parking lot would affect water drainage and the small units would be little more than a rooming house.

Sharon Williams, who lives on Pelham Street at the bottom of Church Hill said the conflicted with a number of bylaws and should be scrapped.

“The residents are deeply committed to rejection of this proposal and don’t understand how it reached this stage,” she said.

Cuthbertson, who with her husband Dale Smith live at 8 Church Hill beside the proposed five-plex, took councillors through a detailed visual presentation.

She touched on bylaws, the Official Plan, drainage, safety and alternatives.

“We are not opposed to intensification,” she said on behalf of residents, “but this is too much.”

“This is insulting to the neighbours,” she said. “It is also insulting to renters in the town by telling them they don’t deserve the protection of our bylaws.”

She walked councillors through problems with a fiveplex in a building with half the required street frontage, with a lack of setbacks for a proper driveway and with a parking lot that would cover half the property.

The parking lot would increase the flow of water down the hill and into a rear development, she said.

There is also an underground water problem.

“We will be taking the burden of traffic and water,” she said. Fast moving traffic on Church Hill will increase.

Cuthbertson also touched on Community Improvement Plan grants that would come with the five-plex at $15,000 per unit.

“A lot of taxpayers’ money would go to this,” she said.

She called the whole project “profit taking and paving” drawing applause from her supporters.

Councillors Catherine King, Gary Accursi, Peter Papp, John Durley, Richard Rybiak and Jim Lane asked questions about drainage, apartment sizes, traffic and neighbouring buildings.

Pelham Street resident George Ketter criticized the planning process.

“We are simple residents. We knew nothing about the process we would be put through.”

Smith, who moved into 8 Church Hill three years previous, said organizing against this project “has brought all our neighbours together.”

In an interview after the meeting, Cuthbertson said, depending what council does with the proposed rezoning, her group is willing to appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board if necessary.

Planning director Terrance Glover said his staff will take the information they received and sit down with the applicant.

If there are major changes in the proposal, he may call a public meeting to explain them before taking a recommendation to town council.

In the meantime, anyone with comments on the fiveplex proposal can make them by contacting the planning department by mail, email or visiting.

Police closed a section of Pancake Lane last week as Pelham Firefighters put out a small fire. It continued to be a busy week for the firefighters as they also responded to the Pelham Arena after it was struck by lightning on Friday.

Fraudulent student job postings on the rise, says Brock staff Staff at Brock University are sounding the alarm on new job scams targeting students which could see them, among other things, being used as pawns in fraudulent activity.

In one recent incident, a fraudster posing as an employer at a legitimate organization hired a student via email without any face-to-face interaction. On the student’s first day of work, their job description suddenly changed and they were asked to deposit a cheque and run errands for the employer who was suddenly out of the country.

Alarm bells went off and the student didn’t cash the cheque. Instead, they followed up with Career Services staff at Brock who helped to verify with the real employer that no such person worked for the company and that the job offered did not exist.

In another similar case, an unsuspecting student cashed a counterfeit employer’s cheque and conducted the errands they were asked to carry out only to be later told by the bank that the cheque was a fake and that they were on the hook for $2,500.

“This student cashed a phony cheque that bounced, which is considered fraud,” says Amy Elder, director of Career Services at Brock. “The bank couldn’t go after the individual who issued the cheque, since it was a fake. So the student was unfortunately responsible for paying it back because the bank had no other re-

course.”

Fraudulent job postings are increasing in number and sophistication. Thieves are using clever tactics and technology to make it more difficult to identify scams.

And trusting students are sometimes being lured by promises of high pay and benefits.

“These types of scams have always been around,” adds Elder. “Especially when the job market is tight for youth, as it is now.”

Brock’s Career Services and Co-op offices, and the Goodman School of Business’ Career Development Office have stringent mechanisms in place for the approval of employer accounts and postings with the University’s job board system.

In light of the recent increase in online job scams targeting students, all three offices are working collaboratively to address issues as they arise. Additionally, these on-campus groups employ trained professionals who are well versed in recruitment practices and available to coach students on all issues related to their job search.

“We manage a large volume of postings every day and we ensure we have done our due diligence to verify employers, review postings and look for anything that doesn’t sound legitimate,” says Stephanie Harper, manager of the Goodman School’s Career Development Office. “Some scams are really creative and difficult to

identify, so students are encouraged to contact one of the three campus career offices if they are unsure about a job posting or have questions about an employer.”

Brock University staff may be diligent about weeding out fraudulent postings on campus, but have no control over what is posted on public job posting sites.

“We want our students and any other job seekers to educate themselves and be cautious,” says Lisa Kuiper who oversees employer development for Brock’s Career Services. “We want students to notify us if they come across something that doesn’t seem right to them. Even if you’re not sure, ask the question. We’re here to help.”

“We’ve had students come into our office telling us how embarrassed and stupid they feel having fallen for these scams,” adds Kuiper. “But we want our students to know that we and other services at Brock are here as a resource help them out.”

Brock’s Career Services has prepared a list of the most prevalent kinds of job scams, as well as a list of red flags (attached) to help you determine if an online job posting is legitimate or not. The general public should also be aware and should immediately report anything that does not seem legitimate on any job-posting sites.

Operation Waterwings helps Women’s Place

Faced with battling waves and nasty weather, Bryce Barlow took on a challenge.

The 17-year-old crossed Lake Ontario Saturday in a 12-foot sailboat to raise funds for Women’s Place of South Niagara.

Launching from Port Dalhousie and landing in downtown Toronto, Barlow wanted to help an under-appreciated not-for-profit organization in Niagara.

Women’s Place of South Niagara Inc. strives to end abuse and violence by empowering women and their children with safe shelter, counselling, education and community partnerships.

Barlow said it is one of the most important organizations in the region.

While the planning went off without a hitch, weather during the morning launch turned into a challenge.

After a storm the Friday evening, the waves were rough and choppy making the launch impossible

Fishermen in the area directed the group to a private launch in a sheltered area, where the long journey began.

Once leaving the harbour, the E.L. Crossley student faced of waves close to seven feet high. The 12foot sailboat cut through and quickly put the shore behind him.

About a kilometre out, the waves started to space out, allowing Barlow’s sailboat to reach 10 km per hour.

Three-and-a-half hours into the journey, he was about 12 kilometres off Toronto when water began filling into the cabin, but Barlow said the water kept his feet warm.

He continued the journey which paid off around 7:45 p.m., as he entered the Toronto Harbour.

Once on dry land, Barlow bent down and kissed the ground. He had successfully battled the elements in the 45 kilometre trip across Lake Ontario.

The idea of making the trip came after attending a Rotary event in April called SlapShot.

It was there the planning began. The Rotary club helped gather donations.
