O n Saturday night, Pelham’s recreation director heard the same refrain two or three times.

“This is how we did it in England.”

Vickie vanRavenswaay said she didn’t know so many people in Pelham were familiar with partying in wet English weather.

Bands played on. Beer garden stayed busy. Residents danced in the drizzle.

By evening, rain eased on downtown Fonthill.

Earlier, however, it did dampen the busiest day of the four-day Summerfest.

Bouncy castles shut down. Art in the park covered up. Vendors spread plastic on their wares.

The sun came out Sunday to give artists in Peace Park a chance to recover to the beat of blues and a breakfast crowd . It brought children back to the Kids Zone of castles and miniature golf.

Sabrina Metsala picked up a town-logo balloon and beach ball for her son Lucas on Sunday.

“We have been here each day. It’s just down the street from where we live,” she said.

Despite the Saturday rain, the festival approached its attendance goal of 25,000.

Town staff systematically counted the crowd each day measuring it every couple of hours , vanRavenswaay said. With the count they could assess demands for shuttles and other services.

On Saturday, 7,000 came downtown during the day while another 3,500 listened to bands and filled the beer garden in the evening.

Attendance kept pace with the first two days.

The festival’s opening night, featuring a Bee Gees tribute at the Fonthill Bandshell, Pelham Farmers Market, Art in The Park and a beer and wine garden, drew 6,400.

That was matched by 7,000 during a new Country Night on Friday. Line dancers filled the street.

Restaurant patios were jammed. The beer garden flowed. And teens took over the Fonthill Bandshell for an outdoor movie night watching the movie Thor.

Coun. Gary Accursi, who chairs the Summerfest committee, said on Sunday, the turnout Saturday despite the rain along with attendance on Thursday and Friday shows the community has taken to the four-year-old festival.

“They really come out to support it.”

Summerfest has come long way from its first year. Then it was a oneday event set up to bring people downtown after months of road construction.

“It has steadily grown and expanded,” said Accursi.

Mayor Dave Augustyn at Monday’s town council meeting praised Accursi and the Summerfest committee as well as van Ravenswaay, and town staff.

He reviewed the daily numbers totally over 23,000 and added that town councillors and staff served 400 breakfasts Sunday morning with more than 1,000 people at the Peace Park wind-down event.

To volunteers from the committee, service clubs, Pelham Active Transportation Committee, bandshell cand farmers market committees as well as artists, vendors and other participants he could only say: “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Fenwick brick project rallies around flagpole

With the downtown Fenwick beautification project scheduled to begin, the first Fenwick commemorative bricks are about to be engraved.

Bricks purchased by Aug. 1 will become a first batch prepared by Kirkpartrick Monuments Inc in Fonthill.

However, the Aug. 1 deadline does not mean an end to a chance to leave your mark on the sidewalks of Fenwick, said Gary Chambers of Fenwick’s 160th Anniversary committee.

“Aug. 1 is just a deadline to be among the first,” he said.

Funds will support a landscaping project around Fenwick’s historic flagpole.

Sales of the four sizes of high quality granite bricks will continue. They will just be part of later batches.

Chambers said sales have been steady.

Families have put names of members on them. Veterans are honoured with a black poppy logo. Corporations can have their company logo engraved on them.

The bricks will line new sidewalks on each side of the Canboro Road and Maple Street intersection where the village’s flagpole stands.

Although the sales will finance expanded landscaping around the flagpole, the bricks will not be part of the structure.

“We did not want people to get hit crossing the road to look for their bricks,” said Chambers.

This is the second flagpole project. Leftover revenues from Fenwick’s 150th Anniversary in 2003 went to upgrading and lighting the flagpole. Those raised during the 160th are for landscaping during the town’s Fenwick beautification project expected to be done this summer.

Bricks range from for a standard 6 by 12 inch to 12 by 12 inch a corporate logo engraved brick.

Chambers said variations have been ordered.

For example, the names principals of Pelham District High School under its various titles will be on one brick. They include Bud Ker and E.L. Crossley.

Janet and Laverne Tritton will have a double sized 12 by 12 brick listing the three generations of their family.

The flag pole, which they can see down Maple Street from their home, is important to the community, they said.

It was the town’s original war memorial, said Laverne.

Those who went off to serve during the Second World War gathered around it before they left. Later those who returned used it to remember those who did not.

It was the centre of Remembrance Day services until a monument was built in Centennial Park.

Bricks can be purchased through the Town of Pelham municipal office in Fonthill.

It is sad that we have to install video surveillance cameras to protect our own property. I take pride in ownership and keep my property looking nice. On July 11, sometime in the evening, a rash of vandalism and theft occurred on Concord Street.

A bird ornament that was deeply planted in one of my garden pots was stolen. Other property damage was reported along the street. My lawn ornament was spotted on another lawn around midnight but has since disappeared. If anyone knows the whereabouts of it I would truly appreciate it back since it was a gift from my late husband and is part of a set.

I am not sure who to blame. Is it the kids who are allowed to wander around neighbourhoods causing havoc or their parents who fail to teach them respect for others? What do these kids tell their parents when they get home and their parents ask how they spent their evening? Or do their parents really care what they do?

I read with great interest the report of the ageing arena by AECOM Canada. Yes, the arena is on its last legs, but I would be curious to know if the arena could be transformed into a new location for the roads, water and sewer department.

The town is expanding further to the east and south, while the works department is in the north-west area in town. The arena would be a more central area for that purpose.

The existing works yard buildings are much older than the arena and are in dire need of replacement so the department could be combined at the arena.

Is the town looking to demolish the arena, relocate the soccer field and all-purpose court to sell the property for more subdivision development? How do the surrounding home owners feel about the possible plans?

We are losing more and more green space in Pelham to the tax dollar.

I myself do the speed limit even though some of the limits are in areas just for speed traps so cops can get easy tickets for there monthly quota.

I drive down Hwy. 20 towards Fonthill where the limit goes from 80 kilometres, to 70 kilometres, and to 50 kilometres just past the high school and people are right on my tailgate (cars, dump trucks and 18 wheelers), which really tics me off when I’m doing the speed limit. My five-year-old son and myself are at risk because if I had to stop for any reason, those truck won’t stop in time and would whip us right off the road. How do I know this? I have my truck license so I know how much stopping distance they need to do it safely. I was driving today and a car was right on my butt, and a cop was sitting in the fire station towards Fonthill and they did not do anything. If they want us to do the speed limits then they need to start giving tickets to dangerous drivers tailgating people who follow the law. Especially with children in the car.

Potential multi-faceted community centre synopsis After my column last week, I wanted to give you an overall synopsis regarding recreational and community centre-type needs, wants, and costs and the potential of a multi-faceted community centre.

You will recall that the Town hired LeisurePlan International last summer to develop a market analysis, business case study, and facilities review. After a resident survey, detailed analysis and a comparison to industry standards, LeisurePlan recommended in January that the Town: • replace the existing single-pad with a new arena facility within the next five years; • design a new twin-pad facility and phase the construction – build one ice pad first (contingent on capital financing) and construct the second pad after 2023/24 (should the sustaining demand develop); • provide a multi-purpose facility to accommodate demand for participation in fitness activities, walking/running on an indoor track, and gymnasium sports; • provide multi-purpose program space; • not provide an indoor pool due to lack of demand and associated costs; In April, LeisurePlan presented various options and

recommended that the Town build “integrated facilities” – a multi-purpose community complex – for $22 to $27 million. (They estimated that an integrated facility would cost up to $1.1 million less in capital costs than two, stand-alone facilities.)

In May, LeisurePlan projected net operating costs for an integrated facility at $63,715 in the first year, and declining slightly each year for the next four years. As a comparison, the existing Arena’s net operating costs were $64,366 in 2011; $75,477 in 2012; and $92,486 in 2013.

Since the estimated costs to operate a multi-faceted community centre is less than the existing arena’s operating loss, town staff recommended that the Town could fund the costs to operate a new integrated facility.

In essence, the recommendations say that the community would provide sustaining demand; if we can afford to construct a new multi-faceted community centre, we could afford to operate it.

So, how do we try to make the capital costs for a potential new community centre affordable for local, municipal tax-payers? We need to fundraise and attain

financial support from the federal and provincial governments.

To do that we will need more detailed plans (design drawings), and tighter cost estimates.

That’s why Council recently appointed a community design committee members – with representatives from recreation user groups, youth, seniors, artists, service clubs and the community-at-large. We have also asked for quotes from four, short-listed design firms so we can pick an architect.

As I wrote about last week, based on LeisurePlan’s reports, the condition of the existing arena, and imminent developments, Council recently decided to begin design of a potential multi-faceted community centre on the town-owned lands in the East Fonthill area.

We will continue to keep you informed so we can work together about this very important matter for Pelham.

Krysta Pratt, owner of Studio Twenty, celebrated her third year in business in style; sponsoring and participating in Summerfest’s demonstration of the five styles of Zumba.

The energetic Pelham native, who uses the dance fitness program in her studio, has created a popular destination for those seeking a unique workout regiment.

“I’ve always worked for myself and wanted to expand,” Pratt said. “So when I found the perfect location (in Fonthill), it was just a great match for my clients and myself.”

A few years ago, she became a spin instructor. That, combined with her background in massage therapy, helped grow Studio Twenty into a thriving location in town. She also relies on trying new techniques in the ever-expanding world of fitness.

“I heard people complaining about signing up for gym memberships and never using it. People do get busy in life and can’t always get to the gym, So I thought of a different way that could benefit the member as well, coming up with the punch card idea that doesn’t punish the customer for not being able

to make it in.”

Pratt, whose always incorporated a healthy lifestyle in her everyday life, wanted to make it easier to access her business. Rather than being pressured into monthly contracts, the punch card provides a healthy opportunity to get fit on their own time. Something she says, has paid off for both sides.

“They can spin, Zumba and do everything else for the same price. It made it much more flexible for the average working person.”

Classes are always open for anyone to try but she does rely on booked appointments so that class sizes remain small and the customer gets the one-on-one experience with a trainer.

“Our instructors are fantastic as they’re always looking to further their education in their specific speciality. It really is about building a relationship with the person and they really aim to help each one in achieving their fitness goals.”

Thankful for the community support, she aims to continue down her own path. Exploring new fitness routines and providing a healthy and safe environment for her clients.

A section of Effingham Rd. was closed on July 17 after a resident found a garbage bag in a ditch that was omitting a terrible stench.

Police closed the road between Foss and Sumbler late in the evening to examine the bag closer. It was then determined that inside the bag were a bunch of rotting fish heads.

The road was opened a short time after.

Diner and winery open up at Fenwick Market

“It’s a bit of a rush but we wanted to help out,“ said Minor during his first night last Wednesday.

They closed the 2X4 Diner at Beckett’s Bridge at 2 p.m., raced up Regional Road 24 to Fenwick and then set up at the farmers market at 4:30 p.m.

“We live in Fenwick so it makes sense,” to help the market, Minor said.

He planned to vary what they offer each week.

“Keeping of course, what is selling.”

Most of the food, such as the pulled pork braised in Dr. Pepper, is prepared ahead of time and heated up on a grill at the booth.

Since then, they have renovated the building and diversified the menu.

The popular breakfast and lunch spot at Regional Road 24 and River Road originally opened in 1957. Among recent changes is dinner menu on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

“It’s working out well,” said Bailey about the changes.

The Fenwick Farmers Market opened in June with four vendors and has expanded to nine. It is in the parking lot of St. Ann’s Catholic Church on Canboro Road.

Co-ordinator Carolyn Botari said the market is getting busier each week especially now that more fruit and vegetables are available.

“Sweet corn and cucumbers should be available next week.”

Vineland Estates Winery, she said, is proud to be part of this vibrant farm community and is so pleased to be able to directly reach out to its neighbours.

There will be tasting of 100% Ontario VQA wine and selling by the bottle but wine will not be sold by the glass.

Recent changes in provincial regulations allows for the sale of wine at farmers markets made from locally grown grapes.

Cat bylaw issue wanders back into council after residents write The cat came back at town council’s regular meeting Monday.

Ward 3 Coun. John Durley asked town staff to investigate possible solutions to the annoyance of cats bothering neighbours in the urban areas. “It’s a recurring situation when someone else’s pet does its business in your yard,� he said.

He was speaking in response to letters from Donald and Mary Jane Hurst, and, Frank Kurcz who questioned why the town does not have a cat bylaw but has dog bylaws.

They are annoyed by cats using their lawns as a “litter box.�

Durley said in rural areas it might be difficult to consider a bylaw because of the number of feral cats.

Ward 1 Coun. Jim Lane, however, said staff should also consider rural areas because cats can be a problem there.

The issue of wandering cats messing property and damaging gardens has been raised at council before. “It has nine lives,� said Mayor Dave Augustyn.

Fire station project blazes ahead The construction of a new Pelham Fire Station No. 3 is “on schedule and on budget.�

In a report to town council Monday, design committee members and firefighters Jim Waldeck, Glen Harrison and Dave Kazan said the work on the North Pelham station “was making great progress.�

This came despite wet weather problems early in the work this spring. “The contractors with subcontractors are showing up on time to do the work as needed,� said Waldeck.

The three showed council step by step photos of the construction progress from the foundation up. “The shingles were going on today,� he said.

The committee is aiming at an Oct. 10 opening for the station from which the Short Hills Fire and Rescue volunteers will protect northern Pelham and Short Hills Provincial Park.

This is the second new station for Pelham. Fire Station No. 2 in Fenwick was replaced four years ago.

Birthday party kicks off new fundraising effort for PMHA

Olivia Abrunzo loves to play hockey. When her mother asked what she’d like to do for her upcoming birthday party, the answer was simple; help others get into the sports she’s grown to love.

The party, where 20 of her friends stopped by, was a special carnival themed adventure.

“We had lots of games that you could get prizes by winning tickets,” Abrunzo said.

Carnival games such as Plinko, water pistol shooting gallery, fish pond, ping pong ball toss and many more made for an exciting weekend with even bigger results.

What made the party extra special was that instead of presents, she asked for donations. Her friends came through and raised over $500 to be donated in the new family fund.

The family fund began when Trevor Philbrick raised $1,300 selling Christmas trees last year to help out players in the Pelham Minor Hockey Association (PMHA).

The Diesel Tournament, which ran earlier in the year, raises money to purchase equipment for children who can’t afford it. Victoria Morrissey, Olivia’s mother, says

the fund differs from it. Money gathered will be separate from the operating budget of the PMHA, and will tackle lower registration fees for children in Pelham.

“Lots of people in Pelham think everyone can afford it and that’s not always true.”

While the new arena may have a lower operating cost, she expects hockey fees to continue to rise. In a small community, every dollar raised will help a parent get their child or children into the sport of hockey.

“Some people just need that extra boost to help out,” Morrissey said. “This is for the parents who may be short just $100 for registration, so that their children do have the opportunity to play hockey and be active.”

The fund will also help produce better hockey players in Pelham. She says many parents cannot afford the travel team and their daughter or son remain in lower competition.

With help from the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program, Abrunzo and Morrissey hope to see an increase of participants inside the arena this upcoming season.

“We don’t really have anything like this in the area as we normally wait until someone from Pelham Cares steps up, so it was nice of Olivia to recognize that need in the community. I couldn’t be prouder.”

Snider shines at Summerfest

It was a humbling experience for Wendy Lynn Snider as she kicked off Country Night at Summerfest.

The rising singer, whose also a mother of two, graced the crowd Friday night with some old fashioned country tunes in her first appearance in Pelham. Despite her growing success in Niagara, her musical story almost never happened.

Snider grew up in a musical family.

Her father performed Johnny Cash at local taverns but she never envisioned stepping on stage herself. Originally from Kirkland Lake, she would sing the national anthem at her songs hockey games, but never ventured any further into the music business.

It was when she met her husband, Curtt Snider, that things began to fall in line. He wrote her first country song and booked her first gig.

“He heard me sing and told me I needed to get out there and perform. From there it just kept going,” Snider said. “I give all the credit to where I’ve gotten to my husband because I wouldn’t have gone down that path without him.”

The laid-back musician says her husband was the ‘kick-in-the-butt’ she needed to get started, which is why the combination work so well.

“Curt takes the initiative to find the shows, find the contacts and create studio space for me to record. If it wasn’t for him, I’d never have gone on stage.”

Lucky for her fans, she’s kept busy

playing across southern Ontario. Gig after gig, her name grew despite the uphill battle of keeping the old-school country sound alive.

“It’s been a challenge to make a name for myself in a consistently changing industry. Everyone is into the new country sound – not that I don’t love the new – but I was raised with the classics of country so it’s tough because there are not a lot of places that will cater to the older crowd.”

Curt and Wendy have already begun exploring options to venture beyond the everyday performance. They’re looking to create matinees with other local bands that allow for more music in an earlier time slot.

“Older folks, like us, enjoy going out to eat and drink while enjoying country music – but also being able to be home at a decent time as well,” Snider says. “There is an audience for (old country), so we hope to bring it back in a big way.”

What Snider brought back Friday evening was sheer talent mixed in with a little bit of music history. A performance she’ll never forget.

“The bands adrenaline was pumping so we had great energy going into the show, and the crowd really helped us hit our groove. It was one of the best shows of my life.”

It includes nearby teams in Welland, Fort Erie, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Thorold and Grimsby.

Toffolo said the Pirates had two players from Pelham last season and is working with the Pelham Minor Hockey Association as it sets up tryouts in August. New season in September.

The lease agreement will give the Pirates control of the arena’s food concession. The town will also allow a Pirates trailer beside the Pelham arena. It will serve as a dressing room until a new complex is built.

Chief administrative officer Darren Ottaway said the deal came together very quickly.

The Pirates will pay regular ice rental rates for the five-and-a-half hours a week they will use the arena, he said.

They will have home games on Friday nights, with Tuesday as an alternative.

Ottaway said the ice time was agreeable to Pelham Minor Hockey Association and the Niagara Centre Figure Skating Club, who also use the arena.

PMHA president Byron Sinclair told council his hockey association thinks this is ideal for the community and would like to see Pelham players make the team.

“We are behind you with whatever you need,” Sinclair told Toffolo and council.

In answer to a question from Ward 3 Coun. John Durley about the hockey club’s role in future fundraising for a new community complex, Toffolo said it will be involved it.

The town is in the process of planning for a multi-purpose complex with an ice rink, gym, fitness centre, indoor track and community rooms.

It has appointed an architectural de-

sign committee and narrowed down architects.

Capital funding for a $25 to $39 million community centre project (depending on a single or twin ice rink ) is still unclear.

While the town has some funds set aside and possible sponsors in the wings, it expects federal and provincial infrastructure grant programs to pop up over the next couple of years.

Council wants to have a plan “on the shelf” ready to use for short notices that go with senior government announcements.

Toffolo, in an interview Sunday, said he left Port Colborne and its new 1,700 seat twin-ice surface complex because the town could not support two junior teams.

The Pelham arena, which seats 250 and holds 500, would support the team’s regular season games, he said.

Attendance would be better than he was getting in Port Colborne, a city of 18,000.

Pelham with a population of 16,500 is growing and provides more potential, he said.

The team name will remain the “Pirates” because it is too late to order new uniforms for the next season.

However, Toffolo said, he may ask Pelham fans if they may want a change to possibly the Panthers in the future.

Mayor Dave Augustyn dropped a similar hint Monday.

He said he was “very supportive” of the deal with the Pirates because they were in it “for the long haul” of seven or eight years.

The hockey team was also willing to get local youth involved, the mayor said.
