DSBN Seeks Name for ‘New West Pelham Elementary School’

Coyotes Growing Bolder in Pelham

Lynn Philbrick of North Pelham is no stranger to the outdoors. Living on her farm in North Pelham, Lynn deals with livestock and other critters on a daily basis.

These days, however, the critters are getting a little too close for comfort.

Lyn has been noticing the coyotes getting a little more numerous- and a lot more bold- for a while now, but things came to a head last week when three of the animals confronted her and her dog out front of her barn.

“I was getting pails of water, and I was coming out and I looked down at my horse and saw her all puffed up at the back door,” recalled Lynn. “I thought ‘ok, my dog is loose out front’ so I came to see where he was and it was like ‘oh my god! Here’s my dog, and I have a huge coyote facing him’.

Rail Travel in Pelham Not a New Concept

GO Train service to the Niagara Region is likely to commence operation in the next few years. But the concept of a railway line linking Niagara to Toronto actually existed more than a century ago.

Incorporated in 1884, the Toronto, Hamilton, and

Buffalo Railway (TH&B), was a 104-mile line, used to service the area known today as the Golden Horseshoe. The main purpose for the TH&B railway was to link Buffalo, New York - across the International Bridge - to Hamilton and Toronto.

This provided Canadian businesses with the opportunity to move their products to American customers, and vice versa. The railway line also moved passengers, giving residents a more efficient mode of transportation.

The TH&B railway from Buffalo to Toronto made stops in many places, including the Fenwick station. It served as a stop for shipping and freight, and as a passenger station. Most of the freight shipped out came from nurseries and the canning factory in Fonthill.

Due to decreasing profits, the station shut down in 1966.

There were only two passenger travels recorded.

The approx. 4.01-mile track was originally built to reach Dominion Construction Company gravel pit but it ending up serving other companies, such as, Brown Brother’s Nursery; Morris, Stone & Wellington Nursery; Pelham Canning Company; Lindsay Lumber Company; Goodwillie & Page; Ridgeville Cement Company; as well as local farmers who shipped produce.

There was much consideration to extend the line to St. Catharines but it was never followed through.

Although the Ridgeville spur was only supposed to be temporary, it lasted 40 years. Due to lack of action and the TH&B not being able to afford to keep the line open, it officially closed in 1936.

For the past six years, GO transit has had a seasonal train system for Niagara residents occurring on a weekend in October and May, as well as Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between the first weekends of July and September.

Train rides are a little over two hours with stops in St. Catharines, Burlington, Oakville, Port Credit and Exhibition Place in Toronto.

The region is attempting to bring daily, year round GO Trains to the Niagara Region. It was also specifically mentioned in Ontario’s 2016 budget.

Niagara has invested $40 million into this project, which they say will cost at least $100 million. Many obstacles must be overcome, but proponents hope to have a fully functioning system by 2017.

DSBN Seeks Name for ‘New West Pelham Elementary School’ “It’s a time of rejuvenation in Fenwick as our two great DSBN schools will join together to share one bright future,” reads a letter sent home to parents from each institution. “A common name for these two great schools is a great way to symbolize a new beginning.”

The process is open to all who wish to provide their opinion.

“Anyone is eligible to submit a name,” said Kim Yielding, the DSBN’s Manager of Communications and Public Relations. “It is an important process for students and parents to be involved in, as well as staff and community members.”

Some residents have expressed dissatisfaction with renaming the renovated E.W. Farr Memorial School, and worry that a new name is a foregone conclusion.

However, Yielding assured the Voice that the name selection committee would consider keeping the current name, if it meets the criteria outlined in DSBN Policy A-09, which governs this process.

“All of the names that are suggested are provided to a naming committee,” she said. “If the committee feels that name meets the criteria, it will be shortlisted. If people inferred that that name won’t be put forward, that is completely unintentional.”

The decision to rename the renovated space came about on March 8, when the Board voted to establish a committee to consider a number of potential names for the Hybrid facility.

At the time, DSBN Chair Dale Robinson noted that this was standard procedure: “When the DSBN undertakes the consolidation of two school communities into one, the option of creating a new name is always considered.”

“We are also looking forward to engaging with the community throughout all phases of the project,” added Robinson.

Residents interested in submitting a name can do so at nameyourschool.dsbn.org. All submitted names will be considered. The submission deadline is noon on Monday, April 25.

EDITORIAL The Town of Pelham’s Flexible Mathematics LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

By now residents have all been force-fed repeated servings of the proposed Community Center funding pie. While each slice is inedible in its own way, the Debenture wedge stands alone in its distastefulness—in the sheer impossibility that anyone could swallow it whole.

Says one accountant of this newspaper’s acquaintance: “Do they think we’re stupid?”

In the Town’s public presentations, in its advertising, in the glossy brochure mass-mailed to Pelham residents late last week, appears the same assertion: To repay a $9 million dollar loan, each taxpayer is only on the hook for a mere $46.67, based on the average residential assessment. This,

people are told, is an increase for “2016 only.”

Not only that, says the Town, but this amount is already “completely funded” within the 2016 budget.

Hooray! Taxpayers have already paid their $46.67!

That’s the end of the tax obligation!

Except that it isn’t. It’s a cleverly worded deception. It’s a rhetorical gimmick. It’s a fib that borders on a bald-faced lie.

What’s actually proposed is this: Starting in 2016, the Pelham-portion property taxes will be increased to pay for a 30-year loan (the debenture). This increase will remain in place until 2046. This is not a “2016 only” increase. This is not a one-time payment of $46.67. This is an ongo-

ing portion of the tax bill that would not exist were it not for the Town’s borrowing $9 million dollars on the backs of its taxpayers. And those taxpayers will be stuck with it for three decades.

It is shameful that such linguistic manipulation be employed by a Town to pull the wool over the eyes of its own residents.

Shameful, inexcusable, and ultimately the tactic that may just turn this funding pie into a crumble.

And if that happens, Town Council will have only its own deceptive tactics to blame.

Keep the Name E.W. Farr I read in the paper the plans to close Pelham Centre and expand E.W. Farr with further plans to rename the school. The name change is upsetting me. I have in my possession the minutes and financial reports from 1884 to 1904 of SS#6 where E.W. Farr began teaching in 1891and went to Fenwick to continue his teaching. He was one of the pioneers of education in Niagara. According to these books his pay for the year was about the same as today's teachers make in one day! They had gas lights and a wood stove for heat and had grades 1 to 8 in one room to teach and teachers couldn't go on strike! The attendance list for the school shows names of many people who built Fenwick. My family has lived in Fenwick for over 200 years; my Grandfather was Reeve from 1898 to 1904 and my father from 1958 to 1974. My three children and two of my grandchildren have attended E.W Farr school as well. I am sure that my Grandfather, Father and many others in the community would support me in saying PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE THE NAME OF THE SCHOOL! Why can’t we keep some of our history?

Community Centre a ‘Top-Down’ Decision Council’s tight timeline and plans for ‘public engagement’ are inadequate and will not generate the feedback necessary for this issue. Or is that the intention?

The chosen formats are inefficient for public input: low level participation compared to the large residential base; views unrepresentative of all interest groups; difficulty determining how strongly viewpoints are held throughout the community; and how special interest views are influencing the final decision.

Brenda Herchmer, consultant on community issues, has stated, “community building is about making sure stakeholders are empowered to control decisions, projects, programs and policies that affect them…”(Tribune, Jan/12). Have Council’s actions enhanced ‘community building’ or only fuelled controversy and divisiveness? Has the Town’s major stakeholder-taxpayers-been given the opportunity to control decisions?

A referendum permits a large scale forum for meaningful consultation. It makes common sense for taxpayers to have input. What is Council fearful of?

A few years ago, consultant Gord Hume was brought in for a presentation. In deciding issues, “Hume stressed it has to be a ground-up approach that everyone buys into. It can’t be a top-down plan handed out by a municipal Council,”(Tirbune, Nov/11). With heavy reliance on user-group input, inadequate public input, a staff-directed business plan, no independent review of the ‘plan’, no consultation with taxpayers concerning the ‘affordability’, this is indeed a ‘top-down’ plan.

The assumptions made about financing have the potential to create a high degree of risk and uncertainty for taxpayers. Any shortfalls in these proposed funds and/ or delays in receiving them will mean tax increases down the road. Does Council have a back-up plan to protect taxpayers?

Taxpayers have every right to provide their input and have their say in a referendum. With Council going through the motions of seeking ‘input’ and with contracts waiting to be signed, it’s unlikely they will be given that opportunity.

Town Graphic is misleading I have never written a letter to the editor of any paper in my lifetime but I finally had to write about the four page color flyer the town sent to the residents of Pelham. It was the pie chart on the back page that motivated me. A quick glance showed me the town was up to its usual shenanigans with the misleading representation of the various sources of funding for the proposed community Centre. Although the debenture is a full quarter of the cost of the project it is represented as approximately a seventh of the cost in the pie chart illustration. I say approximate as I was going to calculate the area of this piece of the pie but the circle is irregular which would make the calculation difficult. A pie chart made from an oval? Who does that and why?

The debenture and fundraising together represents a third of the cost of the project.

In the chart they are shown as less than a quarter of the pie. The debenture is three times the total of the fundraising costs of the project but is shown as approximately twice the area in the chart. Shame on the town for such a poor and misleading illustration. I can only assume this was done on purpose to mislead the residents of Pelham as I find it difficult to believe that any program used in making the chart would allow for this to happen. The next time the town wants to use a pie chart they should consult a middle school student for help.

The Fonthill Lioness are once again taking part in the Canadian Diabetes Association Clothesline Program 'Fill a Truck for Diabetes', taking place on Saturday, May 14, from 9am-1pm. The program happily accepts gently used clothing, bedding, sleping bags, belts, ties, purses, blankets, pillows, footwear, appliances and cookware, stuffed animals, phones and small electronics.

Last year, the Lioness were able to file 3/4 of a cube van with used clothing and other articles, and this year they hope to build on that success.

Welland Hospital Doctors Help Improve Patient Care in Guyana

Today, as part of a Canadian Association of General Surgeons (CAGS) effort, and through the generosity of Pentax Endoscopes, there is good news for Guyana.

Guyana is the only English speaking country in South America, and identifies itself strongly with the Caribbean.

It’s a small patch on the map of South America, but in fact is similar in size to the U.K. from whom it derives much of its cultural habits (including cricket). Guyana’s government is democratic, but has had a challenging time growing its Ministry of Health to serve the people. The medical school in Georgetown has been active for 15 years, and has developed a programme for training surgeons (in collaboration with CAGS, and funding from CIDA) for the past 8 years.

From our past collaboration, we knew there were almost no functioning endoscopes in Guyana, so when Welland was about to renew a contract to replace our old scopes we enquired with Pentax as to whether they could resell these scopes to Guyana. Pentax surpassed our expectations greatly by donating both a gastroscope, and colonoscope to the GPHC, which will be used to treat patients, and teach surgical & medical residents the art and science of endoscopy.

Through this earlier contact, and McMaster University’s Dept. of Surgery, we were able to sponsor a Guyanese Surgical Fellow in 2014 to expand his surgical education at the Welland Hospital. Dr. Motilall later returned to Guyana, and is now aiding in setting up an Endoscopy programme there.

After months taken to ship them, and get through customs, they finally arrived last week at their destination; Georgetown Public Hospital (the teaching hospital), in the capital of Guyana.

Teams Lining Up to Get Down In the Mud

So promises the Rotary Club of Fonthill for its upcoming third annual Pelham Mudfest Challenge, set for May 14 at Bissell’s Hideaway in Ridgeville.

Natural and built elements, including a hydro pole wall, haystacks, slides, climbing structures and tire obstacles, are combined for teammates to race over, under, through and around.

Team efforts are not only allowed, they are encouraged for the fun run, so anyone in general physical shape can participate.

The full course is about six kilometres in length, but will involve new, challenging obstacles best tackled as a team. One thing that won’t change: the mud, which the club

guarantees will make its return.

Another aspect of the event that won’t change: the opportunity for the Rotary club to raise funds for significant community projects, in the local community and abroad.

This year’s proceeds will be shared among Wellspring Niagara, EndPolio Now and local community initiatives.

Last year’s proceeds included a $3,000 donation to Wellspring Niagara, the regional cancer support services operation which will soon be building its new central home in Pelham as part of the East Fonthill development. Past donor recipients have included Pelham Cares, and the

Rotary International project EndPolio Now, which has had a significant role in helping eradicate Polio worldwide.

Organizers encourage anyone thinking of participating to register now, since some of the set race times are now full, while others are about half-full already. Waves of racers go every 20 minutes between 10:20 a.m. and 1 p.m. Spectators are welcome.

The Pelham Mudfest Challenge costs $75 per participant, which includes lunch, a T-shirt, dog tags and other refreshments.

The arrival of spring (and hopefully spring weather) often brings thoughts of new growth and renewal. We hope that you find the library to be a comfortable and welcoming space for your own growth and renewal. It is our hope that our collection, programs and services are robust enough to keep you interested and coming back regularly.

As an organization we also seek to grow and renew ourselves. We are

undertaking a number of projects that we believe will strengthen and enhance the programs and services we deliver.

• We will be renewing our strategic plan that will set our direction for the next few years.

• We are making plans to introduce a reciprocal borrowing service that will allow you to borrow materials using your Pelham Public Library Card

at four of our partner libraries in the area.

• We will continue to replace older and worn furniture with the generous support of the Pelham Art Festival • We are looking forward to the expansion and renewal of our Maple Acre branch. Construction is expected to begin in June.

There are a variety of ways to participate in library renewal. You can offer suggestions for change either through our formal surveys or informally through conversations with our staff.

You can volunteer your time and talents. With the upcoming construction at the Maple Acre Branch there will be the opportunity to help us by storing some of our collection in your home through our Move Your Library event. You can also support the library financially through donations or participating in our regular fundraising events. Probably the most important way you can participate is by using the library often. The Fonthill and District Kinsmen are gearing up for their 21st Annual Home and Garden Show, being held all weekend long at the Pelham Arena.

According to Kin Kevin Twomey, the Home and Garden Show gives Pelham residents a chance to come out and support local vendors who can help bring that special renovation or gardening idea to life.

“If you’re dreaming about a project, or you’ve got something in the back of your mind that you’re thinking of doing in the future, come to the Home Show,” he said. “For a three dollar entrance fee you can talk to the vendors and bounce your ideas off of professionals.

They’ll help you make it a reality.”

Twomey is excited to see so much enthusiasm surrounding this year’s event, which has returned to its Home and Garden roots after several years as a Home and Business, and Home and Leisure Show.

“What we heard from people is that everybody gardens and everybody renovates, and since that’s what they wanted, that’s the direction we are heading.”

Patrons are sure to find something they like, with every booth sold out and filled, and with the Kinsmen limiting each trade to a maximum of two booths.

“These people are local, they are reputable, and they are professional,” said Twomey.

Ryan and Steven Van Lochem operate Nature’s Own Landscape and Design in Fenwick. This year marks their first foray into Home Shows, and both men are excited at the prospect.

“Pelham’s a little bit different now, with a lot of people moving into the area from other places,” said 29-year-old younger brother Ryan. “So word of mouth is still important, but participating in things like the Home Show helps people new to the area learn about local contrac-

tors and what they offer.”

This year’s event has also taken on a title sponsor for the first time, in Tucker Homes.

“After 21 years we felt it was time for the show to grow,” said Twomey.

“We wanted to bring in somebody who knows everything about the industry- who could take us to the next level- and that’s Tucker Homes.”

The Home Show, which runs from April 22nd24th, will also feature a fish fry and a pig roast on Friday and Saturday, organized by the Junior B Hockey Team. All proceeds raised from entrance fees will be used to help Pelham’s vulnerable citizens through Pelham Cares. Funds raised from booth sales will be used for other community projects throughout the year.

Cash reserves held by Canadians have risen significantly since the global financial crisis.

Earlier this year, CIBC World Markets reported that Canadians currently hold $75 billion in cash.

That’s almost 10 per cent of the total value of overall personal liquid assets in Canada. CIBC also noted that, in the past year alone, cash positions are estimated to have risen more than 11 per cent. And that is the fastest pace since early 2012.

Much of the increase can be linked to lingering fears about market volatility.

Cash can protect capital over the short-term but it has long-term implications for portfolio growth, particularly when factoring the corrosive effects of inflation.

Regardless, cash is an important component of any portfolio but it requires appropriate management.

Preparation requires a focus on capital preservation, income generation, and a readiness to act. These criteria dictate that some of a portfolio be held in cash. However many people inadvertently end up with different liquidity than originally intended because they made hurried decisions.

This method of storing cash becomes an issue when the investor wants to move quickly but discovers that the GIC was rolled over on maturity and their money is not available. Instead, the funds have been locked in for another term by an automatic process that many financial institutions use if not instructed otherwise.

To avoid that scenario, an investor should know the terms prior to investing and, if they choose a GIC with an automatic rollover, they must note the maturity date. This will allow them to contact their advisor in sufficient time to implement other courses of action such as taking advantage of opportunities or adjusting an asset mix.

Automatic rollovers are doubly disadvantageous when processed without consideration of other products on the market.

Depending on interest rates, money market or other fixed income alternatives may be more

NPCA Works With Landowners to Preserve and Restore Twelve Mile Creek

On Thursday, April 14, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority held a landowner information session designed to educate landowners as to how they can help protect important environmental resources like Twelve Mile Creek and improve their properties.

“Our message is about partnerships and the progress we have seen and how we would like to continue,” said NPCA representative Jocelyn Baker. “We have had 15 years of success working with landowners and stakeholders in the watershed and we know that is important to making any environmental progress.”

The headwaters of Twelve Mile Creek are the only coldwater ecosystem in Niagara, and as such are the only waterway where species like Brooke Trout can naturally sustain breeding populations.

The Twelve Mile Creek watershed originates in Fonthill and drains roughly 132 square kilometres. The upper reaches remain largely untouched by humans, but the lower

sections have been heavily altered.

Part of Thursday’s talk outlined the methods developed by the NPCA to establish a practical process for conservation.

“Rule number one of restoration is always preservation,” said Deanna Lindblad, the NPCA’s Restoration Project Lead.

“You need to always protect what you have left, and understand the issues and the threats and the opportunities with what you have.”

The NPCA has worked to accomplish this by performing a Natural Areas Inventory of Niagara, and by creating Watershed Plans to guide their interactions and recommendations to stakeholders. Being able to work

successfully with these stakeholders is a key component of any NPCA restoration project pertaining to Twelve Mile Creek, as 95% of the watershed is privately owned.

Baker and Lindblad have spent 15 years working with municipalities and private landowners on restoration and preservation projects. Their presentation included photos and success stories where ecosystems had been rehabilitated.

“We have always been and remain committed to this,” said Baker. “We have met with the Town and other partners to acknowledge the historical, and new and emerging issues in the system.”

He hopes that by converting three ‘top draw’, man-made ponds within the watershed to ‘bottom draw’ systems (which send cooler water along the watercourse instead of warm surface water), they will once again see Brooke Trout return to the headwaters of the St. Johns Branch of Twelve Mile Creek.

Both Trout Unlimited and the NPCA hope to continue working with stakeholders to improve this unique and diverse coldwater ecosystem.

SECOND RACCOON WITH RABIES IN NIAGARA The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), along with SPCAs and Humane Societies, are continuing to conduct increased surveillance activities for animals with rabies. As well, with warmer weather arriving animals will be more active. Given this combination it is expected that more animals with rabies will be identified in Niagara in the coming weeks.

Niagara Region Public Health reminds residents to take the following measures to protect themselves from rabies: • Ensure pet dogs and cats have current rabies vaccinations (typically needed annually) • Prevent pet dogs and cats from roaming off-leash or unsupervised • Avoid all contact with wild animals and prevent contact between pets and wildlife • Report wild animals exhibiting abnormal behaviour (particularly raccoons) to either local animal control services or directly to the MNRF.

An animal with rabies may not display symptoms, and so all bites or scratches form an animal, however mild, must be assessed to ensure the person bitten/scratched is not at risk. Immediately report all animal bites and scratches of humans to Niagara Region Public Health at 905-688-8248, ext. 7269 or toll free 1- 888-505-6074. From now until May 9, Maple Crest Early School is hosting an eco-friendly fundraiser that supports both the local and global community, by asking for donations of gently used items that people no longer want or need. The Used Clothing Drive is a great opportunity to de-clutter cupboards and closets, and provides an environmentally conscious way to dispose of unwanted goods.

Currently, the average person discards 70lbs a year into landfills, and 95% of that clothing CAN be recycled. By donating to Maple Crest Early School’s Used Clothing Drive, people can limit landfill waste while also helping with the school’s ‘Raise the Barn’ Project, which aims to turn their barn into a theatre space for the students.

Coyotes Growing Bolder in Pelham Distracted by the large coyote nose to nose with her dog Brody, it took Lyn a moment to notice the other two animals standing nearby.

“I didn’t see the other two at first, and when I got close enough I said to him ‘stay’. I didn’t want him doing anything aggressive or whatever, and he had his hair on end. So I grabbed his collar, and that’s when I saw the other ones, and I thought ‘now we’re now in trouble here!’”

Though Lynn keeps a shovel by the door, she wasn’t confident in her ability to fend off all three of the animals. Instead, she spent a few minutes yelling at them until they eventually wandered off.

Even with her country background, the experience left her a little shaken.

“I know I’m going to have these things out here, but when it’s this close and in the daylight hours, it’s a little strange. I mean, there’s little kids around here, people with small animals, and if you leave your kids for a minute are three coyotes going to come out of the bush?”

“They’re definitely getting a lot bolder,” she added. “A human shows up and they don’t even move!”

Lynn called the Town, but dealing with coyotes in the country is outside of their mandate.

“There’s really nothing that the Town can do,” said Fire and By-Law spokesperson Bob Lymburner. “The only thing that we have in place is livestock protection, so if you’re a farmer who loses livestock you can file a report and get some reimbursement.”

Getting rid of them, says Lymburner, is a matter of hunting them within the confines of the law.

Lynn does not own a gun, but may see if a neighbor wishes to pursue that option. Until then, she will be a little more wary when she goes out to her barn.

All of these advantages inspired Gillespie to relocate his business from Welland to Fonthill, where he hopes Pelham’s expanding community

will provide new opportunities.

“Pelham and Fonthill are growing, and we want to be here,” he said.

“We’re next to the skate park as well, and we do skateboards, long boards, scooters and BMX, so it’s a huge opportunity to be so close to that.”

Along with the prime location, the space has its own parking and 1900 square feet of display room.

“We can show both our bikes and our hockey gear, which is primarily what we do,” he said.

The shop, which has been open now for a couple of weeks, is described

by Gillespie as “a full sporting goods business specializing in bicycles and hockey.” He also does bicycle repairs and skate sharpening

Memories of

Downtown Fonthill As told by Mr. Bob Giles

Downtown Fonthill

In October 2015, the Voice ran a photo and asked residents, “Where is it?”

A number of responses came in, many proclaiming it to be a shot of downtown Fenwick. Fewer respondents got the right answer, Downtown Fonthill. Among those who guessed correctly was Fonthill resident Bob Giles who, now in his eighties, has lived in the area all his life. We invited Mr. Giles to the Voice office, where he graciously shared several stories with us from around the time when that picture was taken. With his permission, we now share those stories with you.

Kinsman’s Store and the White Witch

Stopping on a Dime

One of the stores in that picture is the Kinsman’s store. I remember once when the Kinsman’s store, and Page’s Confectionary, and a couple other stores, were broken into.

Charlie Page had the confectionary store there. And everybody stuck around Page’s, that was the hangout.

And there was Willie McClentick who lived just up the hill, where the old drugstore used to be, with his brother Jim and their mother. And Charlie Page was always teasing Willy. One day, Willy got a bicycle, and he was telling Charlie about the brakes being so good, and Willy said that he could stop on a dime. So Charlie pulled a dime out of his pocket and put it out at the end of the curb and said “McClentick, if you can stop on that dime, it’s yours.”

Now a man named Mike McCann lived on Pelham Street North. He looked after the village waterworks, he was the dogcatcher, and the truant officer, and a sort of police officer too, though what authority he had I don’t know. But he took on that role.

Now McCann was frustrated because he couldn’t figure out who was doing these robberies. He started to get desperate, and at some point, someone told McCann that he should get his fortune told.

So one day McCann came to my father and says “I’ll pay the trip if you take me to Buffalo.” “Why do you want to go to buffalo?” dad asked him. Well, McCann had heard of a fortune teller there called the White Witch, who was supposed to be very good, and he said to my dad, “I’m going to see who’s doing all these robberies around here.”

Dad told him he’d lost his mind, but he took him there anyway. McCann went in alone, and came out shaking his head. Dad asked him what was the matter, and McCann says, “I can’t figure it out. She told me that there is two men and a woman involved in the break-ins. She said she could tell me their names, but she didn’t dare to because she could be sued. But she also said I’m going to catch these people shortly. I asked her for a hint, and she said she saw a ghost. I can’t understand it.”

Well, dad had put a burglar alarm in these stores, and we lived just past where the bank is now, in a little house back there, that belonged to Sharpe’s meat market.

One night soon after McCann had seen the White Witch, the alarm went off. My dad drove down and picked up McCann and sure enough he caught the people, two men and woman. And the one fella that he caught worked for my grandfather on his farm, and his nickname was ‘the ghost’.

And I’m pretty sure they caught them in that store in the picture, the Kinsman’s store.

So Willy went up the hill and come steaming down, got to the dime and hit the brakes. Well, they didn’t work.

Willy went right through the post office window.

Now, he wasn’t hurt, but he sure didn’t get that dime, and Charlie Page got a bill for the window.
