BY JENNIFER CHORNLEY facts,” Jacobi said. The first question introduced in the debate was the issue of possibly reducing the number of politicians within Niagara, currently at a figure of 125. All four candidates agreed there are too many politicians in the Region. “Why do we need thirteen CAOs, thirteen Treasurers, thirteen Deputy Clerks?” said Brian Baty. “It would be preferable to match the provincial and federal boundaries, but I don’t see one Niagara. That’s too large.” Jim Hagar agreed with Baty’s boundary matching suggestion. “Services need to be aligned with public needs,” he said. “There are so many layers of government people have to go through depending on the issue, you just get lost in this maze of stuff.” “We need to bring it back and make it more responsive for the people. It’s not a case of having more government, but a case of a better government representing you.” Hagar also said that public input and integrating

Amalgamation, Pelham's expansion, integrity discussed The E. L. Crossley Secondary School cafeteria was the backdrop for the 2018 Niagara Regional Councillor Candidates Debate held last Wednesday. Organized by the Fonthill Kinsmen Club in partnership with the Welland-Pelham Chamber of Commerce, Pelham’s four Niagara Region Council candidates squared off on a number of Regional issues, including amalgamation, integrity, Pelham’s growth, and working as team at the local and Regional level of government. Current Pelham Mayor Dave Augustyn, Niagara Regional Councillor Brian Baty, Jim Hagar and Diana Huson are this year’s candidates vying for one position to sit at the Niagara Region. Pelham’s other Regional Council seat will be occupied by whoever is elected mayor next week. Welland-Pelham Chamber of Commerce Director Kevin Jacobi was the evening’s moderator. “This is a great opportunity for Pelham residents to hear what the candidates have to say and make a conscience choice based on

ANNUAL APPLE DAY Jack Lilly, a second-year Beaver with the 3rd Fonthill Scouting Group, gives Alex Hamilton an apple during this year’s Apple Day Campaign. Beavers and Scouts were spread throughout Pelham last Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13 handing out apples. The Apple Day Campaign is a yearly event organized by Scouts Canada and is a tradition of being able to have youth interacting within the communities they live in. The annual event provides Scouting youth an opportunity to show their appreciation to the public for their support throughout the year. Youth distribute apples as a way of saying “Thank You” to the community. Any money raised during Apple Day goes towards improving the Scouting program by providing more outdoor adventures for youth, camping equipment, canoes and paddles, training and many other endeavors. Apples handed out during the campaign were donated by Pelham producers. JENNIFER CHORNLEY PHOTO

T CAME AS A SHOCK when I glanced at my watch after an early morning bicycle ride. It was 11:45 AM. How was this possible? Early morning is absolutely the best time of day to ride. Raising your metabolism early provides benefits and options—burn calories at a higher level all day long, or gorge gratuitously on poutine or organic blueberry muffins without a guilty conscience. Enjoy the traffic-free tranquility of sunrise in Pelham, and see which neighbour parked their car on whose lawn after weaving home in the wee hours. Save money. A bicycle ride and one home-brewed coffee provides the same cranking power as two Starbucks. Let's consider what was involved to accomplish an See COLUMN SIX Page 20
