walk/trail is slated to be built between the south side of the road from Timmsdale Crescent to the high school.

Because of the large volume of motor vehicle traffic travelling at high speeds through this area, and because of the necessity for students to tread this path on a daily basis, many residents would like to see the sidewalk go in sooner than later.

“I start work at 2:30 PM and school lets out at 2:15 PM so I can’t take any other route,” Williams explained.

“I have had friends, family, teachers and other community members reach out to me in the past about how this is unsafe and how there should be another alternative for us.”

While shopping in Fonthill between Friday and Sunday, keep an eye out for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in front of local stores with bushels of apples.

As part of the annual Apple Day campaign, Scouting youth of all ages will be trading apples for donations.

The yearly fundraising drive is an important way for young Scouts to connect with the communities they are serving, says Leah Marie of Scouts Canada.

“The Apple Day campaign holds a great tradition of being able to have youth interacting within the communities they live in,” she says. “All of the Apple Day donations stay directly within the group that re-

All you need are two pieces of ID, $125, and a partner willing to take the plunge—Pelham-style.

Where’s the turf...Over the summer many residents woke up to the sound of sidewalk slabs being lifted up and out, destined for replacement. Days later a concrete mixer and a team of weary workers arrived to pour new concrete into the

gap left by the removed slab.

Fast-forward several weeks to the start of autumn, and the sections of lawns surrounding the replaced slabs remain bare.

Good news—and you’ll hear it here first, because the Town apparently did not directly notify affected residents about any of this—turf is on the way.

According to Town spokesperson Ana McKnight, Sacco Construction is in charge of patching those bald spots by November 1.

The silence is deafening...

Town Council wisely approved a change in Pelham’s noise bylaw last week. Previously, excess noise was prohibited only between 11 PM and 7 AM. Now the prohibition—at least relating to electronically amplified noise—applies around the clock. It’s an unfortunate but realistic comment on the fall-off of common respect and civility today that we need government to enforce commonsense good-neighbourliness. Turn it down or pop in those earbuds!

Get jabby: Lower flu risk with immunization (OTTAWA) - For most of us, influenza will cause a few days of fever, cough and generally feeling unwell.

But for some, this highly contagious respiratory disease can lead to severe complications requiring hospitalization or even death.

“Many Canadians don’t know that healthy children under the age of five and seniors over sixty-five, people with chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease, pregnant women, Aboriginal people, people who are obese, and residents of nursing homes and other health care facilities are vulnerable groups that need protection from influenza,” explains Dr. Shelly McNeil, Chair of Immunize Canada.

“This makes influenza prevention by healthy individuals who can pass it on to those at high risk for severe complications a necessity,” says Dr. Le Saux, Vice-Chair of Immunize Canada.

“Healthy individuals can shed the influenza virus and transmit it before they experience any symptoms.

That’s why it is so important to get vaccinated against influenza every year.”

This fall, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommends that all Canadians

IN THE NEWS Pelham break-in

The Niagara Regional police are investigating a break-in and theft reported September 22 at an apartment at 45 Pelham Town Square, Fonthill. A sliding glass patio door was left unlocked and persons unknown entered the apartment and stole a quantity of jewelry. The resident was not in the apartment at the time. Police remind residents to lock all doors and windows even if they are just out in their yards. Investigation continues.

ATV nicked on Church Hill

Police are investigating the theft of a red ARCTIC CAT make ATV from a storage garage beside a residence on Church Hill near Pelham Street in Fonthill. The vehicle was taken sometime between September 12 to 24. police have the VIN number on file.

Collision at Welland Airport

Last Thursday, at approximately 2:20 PM, the Niagara Regional police, Welland Fire Services, and Niagara Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to Welland Airport for a two-plane collision that occurred on the ground.

Emergency services personnel arrived on scene to find that the collision occurred on the tarmac and was believed to be minor in nature.

One of the planes was being operated by a solo pilot.

That pilot suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The second plane contained a pilot and four passengers, who not injured.

Welland Fire Services assisted on scene with fuel cleanup. The investigation of the collision will be conducted by Transport Canada.

Town offers marriage licenses

The Town of Pelham is ready to make any couple’s special day a reality by offering online marriage license applications and customizable civil marriage ceremonies.

“It’s very exciting to help couples say ‘I Do’ in Pelham,” said Town Clerk Nancy J. Bozzato, who issues marriage licenses and officiates civil ceremonies.

“We have worked diligently to make the marriage licence application process as seamless as possible for couples and we look forward

to performing civil marriage ceremonies to bring their dreams to reality.”

The Clerk’s Department issues marriage licenses at Town Hall, Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Couples are encouraged to submit their application online for review.

Then, they simply need to date and sign the completed application and bring it to Town Hall for verification with two pieces of government-issued identification.

Additional documents may be necessary, such as an original divorce certificate, if there was a previous marriage.

The cost of a marriage licence is $125.00 and it is valid anywhere in Ontario for three months. The ceremony officiant is responsible for registering the marriage within three months of the license being issued.

The Town Clerk or Designate are available to conduct civil marriage ceremonies by appointment. Ceremonies may take place at the couple’s desired location or at Pelham Town Hall.

The Town began issuing marriage licenses this summer and so far 17 couples have successfully obtained a licence. The first civil marriage ceremony occurred in September, with two more scheduled in early October.

Mobile drug dealer arrest in St.Catharines

This month, members of the St. Catharines Street Crime Unit commenced an investigation into a male from Toronto suspected of conducting mobile drug transactions in the City of St.Catharines.

On October 4, police observed suspected drug transactions by this individual. At 5:10 PM, police arrested this male after a brief foot pursuit through a Welland Avenue business parking lot. Police located a large quantity of heroin, cocaine and Canadian currency.

Arrested and charged was Shawn Spaulding, 22, of Toronto.

Spaulding has been charged with the following offences: Possession of

a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking (Heroin); Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine); Possession of Proceeds of Crime Under $5,000.

As a result of this investigation police seized $2,600 worth of heroin and cocaine and $1,200 in Canadian Currency.

Legal pot licenses used illegally

Legal medical marijuana licences issued by Health Canada are being used to mask illegal marijuana grow operations.

Over the past 13 months members of the Niagara Regional police Service Guns, Gangs, and Grows Unit have executed three search warrants at 1651 Lakeshore Road, Niagara-on-the-Lake.

As a result of these warrants, police arrested a total of 18 people, and seized 4,015 marijuana plants.

The most recent warrant was executed on October 3. All matters are before the courts.

These investigations have revealed that the persons arrested are shrouding their criminal activities by using legal medical marijuana licences to over-produce marijuana plants.

Police believe that the marijuana is not used for medical purposes, but rather sold on the black market for financial gain.

The 4,015 marijuana plants that were seized represent a value over $4 million dollars.

Police believe that illegal marijuana grow operations pose a significant threat to the public and those who operate them. The persons operating them become vulnerable to the criminal subculture.

Recently an illegal marijuana grow operation was the site of a violent home invasion robbery, where firearms were used.

Police do not believe that every medical marijuana licence issued by Health Canada is being used for illegal purposes. Police believe that the majority of these licences are used for legitimate medical purposes, by law-abiding citizens.

Police encourage anyone who believe that someone is growing marijuana illegally to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service, Guns, Gangs, and Grows Unit.

NRP impaired driving charges In an effort to bring further attention and deterrence to driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, the Niagara Regional Police Service reports the names of those people who are charged with an alleged criminal impaired driving offence in the Region. None of the following charges have been proved in court.

In addition to being charged, these individuals are also bound by a Ministry of Transportation 90-Day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension and are prohibited from operating a motor vehicle on a roadway. The public is encouraged to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service Traffic Safety Hotline or Crime Stoppers to report those who are driving in contravention of the suspension.

The following individuals have been charged criminally with impaired driving by alcohol or drugs, driving with a blood alcohol concentration above 80 mgs of alcohol in 100 ml of blood, or refusing to provide a breath / blood sample.

Members of the Pelham Active Transportation Committee are also worried about the safety of students and other residents who need to walk along Hwy. 20.

A letter submitted to Council by the Chair of the Committee, Bea Clark, stated that “It is important to provide

a dedicated, safe space for pedestrians, particularly youth, to separate them from motor vehicle traffic.”

According to the committee another reason for proceeding with the sidewalk construction right away is because the overall cost of the project will be reduced due to the engineering costs absorbed into the road work already underway by the Region on this section of the highway.

As an alternative to put-

ting in a new sidewalk, Councillor Gary Accursi suggested that improving the bus services available to the students may be a more cost effective way of solving the problem.

From Loewen and Williams’s perspective expanding the transit for students is not the answer.

“For students who want to walk, the buses discourage active transportation and the healthy lifestyle students want but are cur-

rently unable to have,” Loewen said.

“I am someone that likes to be active and I like going for walks when I have the chance,” added Williams.

“My friends and I have voiced on a number of occasions that we would rather walk home instead of taking the bus, but in the end we have always decided not to because it isn’t safe. There is no fun in walking home and feeling in danger.”

Councillor John Durley

said that the safety of the students at Crossley and all residents of Pelham is his biggest concern.

Taking into consideration the condition of the sidewalk at this particular point in time and the recommendations from the students and the PATC, he said now is the best time to build it.

“If we wait two or three years it’s going to cost us a lot more,” said Durley.

“I think that it is to everyone’s benefit that we go

ahead with this.”

Pointing out that the Pelham had already received an award for being a walk-able community, Durley said that building the sidewalk would greatly improve public safety and enhance the Town’s status in terms of the public’s accessibility to active transportation even further.

Council approved the sidewalk’s construction.

IN THE NEWS New Drainage Superintendent for Wainfleet

Recognizing the importance of having properly functioning and well maintained municipal drains, the Township of Wainfleet has hired a new drainage Superintendent, Jason Culp.

“The Township is taking steps towards becoming a top ranked community in terms of drainage,” said Manager of Operations, Richard Nan. “We are very pleased to welcome Jason to our team and look forward to working with him to do just that.”

With 22 years of related experience with all three levels of government, the private sector and local conservation authorities, Culp brings a wealth of experience to the position.

Prior to his 13 years with the City of St. Catharines, Culp worked throughout southern Ontario with a primary focus on rural landowner extension.

Culp says that he looks forward to building a close relationship with local farmers and land owners.

“In a rural agricultural community, the proper function and maintenance of the various classes of municipal drains is critical to crop production, protecting land value, and providing effective flood control in the long term,” he said.

“I will be working closely with residents to achieve these goals.”

There are plans to hold an Open House early next spring to present the 2017 work plan, as well as a 10 year long-term forecast for drainage works in Wainfleet.

Born and raised in Dunnville, Culp is an avid out-

doorsman with strong family ties in the Niagara Region.

He and his wife Tracy currently live in Welland.

Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week is October 9 – 15, and Welland Fire and Emergency Services reminds everyone to check their smoke alarms.

“The theme of Fire Prevention Week this year is ‘Don’t Wait, Check the Date’ of your smoke alarms,” says Brian Kennedy, Fire Chief.

“Smoke alarms don’t last forever. They wear out over time and need to be replaced within the time frame indicated by the manufacturer, which is usually 10 years.”

The date of manufacture is indicated on the back of the smoke alarm and the expiry date is taken from that date.

While smoke alarms typically last 10 years, some have different expiry time frames.

Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the expiry time frame of smoke alarms.

Welland Fire and Emergency Services also reminds residents that smoke alarms are required on every storey of a home and outside all sleeping areas.

They recommend to test all smoke alarms monthly by pushing the test button on the alarm, and replace batteries at least once a year or when the alarm’s low battery signal begins to chirp.

Welland Fire and Emergency Services staff will be at the Canadian Tire store at 158 Primeway Drive tomorrow, Thursday, October 13, from 2 PM to 7 PM in support of Fire Prevention Week.

Residents are encouraged to drop in with questions.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS Noise bylaw amendment

Reacting to complaints from a number of residents earlier this year regarding unwanted noise, Council reviewed the Town’s current noise bylaw at their meeting on Oct. 3. Currently the bylaw prohibits noise created between the hours of 11PM and 7AM. An amendment was brought forward requesting to alter to the existing bylaw so that it can be applicable to excessive noise levels created by electronic amplification of sound at all times of day.

“There certainly is a nuisance factor involved if someone likes to have loud noise that will affect the privacy of another person and the actual enjoyment of their own property,” said Councillor John Durley.

“I think this is a great idea. The problem in the past has been how we can measure this but I think the way this is written and the fact that if it is annoying than a judgment can be made.”

Pointing out that “What annoys one person might not even be noticed by another,” Councillor Marvin Junkin said he believes the only way to objectively

monitor and judge such disturbances by set and monitor a decibel limit.

Fire Chief Bob Lymburner said there is no such decibel limit in the current bylaw at the moment, but he had looked into monitoring levels and found it unnecessary due to the minimal amount of complaints they receive.

“This also gives us the ability to approve large venues,” Lymburner added.

“We had a number of complaints about the concert series at Bissell’s this summer so having this [amendment approved] gives Council the ability to apply it to such special events or venues that have these concerts.”

Council approved the change, making the noise bylaw enforceable at any time, day or night.

Christmas Market returns to Pelham for the fifth year

Council announced that the Christmas Market will return to downtown Pelham again this year.

Now in its fifth year the event began with a single business hosting a Christmas open house.

OPINION As We See It In Committee’s disbandment, a casual disregard for facts

I

N AN EDITORIAL published on August 17 of this year, this newspaper remarked on the Town of Pelham’s seeming desire to develop land with little regard for the municipality’s history or heritage. The editorial noted that Council’s decision to disband the Heritage Committee would seem to imply a lack of official interest in the preservation and conservation of properties important to this town’s past.

Our editorial also pointed to the destruction of a log home over the summer in Fenwick, and the potential demolition of the Timmsdale House in Fonthill, as further evidence of this lack of diligence. Both of these sites, and dozens more, were known to the Heritage Committee, who had painstakingly compiled a list of properties with heritage potential. This list was intended to complement the Town’s official Heritage Register, which currently contains only five properties (the Town of Lincoln, for example, lists 21 properties on its website.)

According to former members, the Heritage Committee was ostensibly

disbanded for failing to fulfill its mandate. The Town went so far as to accuse the Committee of just wanting

to boss town staff around, as if these dedicated volunteers had nothing better to do with their leisure hours.

But the timing of this decision was interesting, given the desire to move quickly in developing East Fonthill and developers’ preference for avoiding the issues that come with heritage-designated properties.

While these issues are by no means insurmountable, former Committee members claim that Town staff exaggerated the effect a

designation would have on properties, and that staff misinformed the public about the legal ramifications of such a designation.

When the Committee requested that the Town distribute a letter clarifying the situation, staff, including CAO Darren Ottaway, and Council, dragged their feet on the process, making edits that Committee members refused to endorse. The August 17 editorial remarked on these actions through the line, “The Committee kept annoying town staff with their pesky adherence to the law, with their unwillingness to heel at the CAO’s command.” This line was referencing the Committee’s desire to accurately convey the legal obligations that come with owning a heritage property, and was not meant to imply that anyone within Town Hall deliberately instructed the Committee to break the law.

It was not long after the events outlined above that the Committee was dissolved—and residents have been paying the price since through the gradual dissolution of their local history.

The five properties listed on Pelham’s heritage register are little more than lipstick on a pig, and certainly not something that residents should be kissing up to.

pen. Then two weeks passed while the deep gap left by the missing piece remained a danger to pedestrians and bike riders. There were no barriers or signs put up at all to warn people of this hole.

Finally the missing section was filled with concrete, but now several more weeks have passed and the missing grass on the sides

is still missing. When we asked a town worker recently whether turf was coming, he said to my husband that no one ever tells them (the workers) anything.

Our calls to Town Hall have not been returned.

Why not? Are we getting our grass replaced or not!!?

Town Council to Food Basics: Think outside the box

Issues surrounding the Town’s sign bylaw and how to amend it in order to accommodate the needs of businesses in Fonthill were on the table again at the Oct. 3 meeting of Council.

The owners of the new Food Basics currently under construction in East Fonthill have applied for a permit to allow for the wall signage they desire for the store.

The Town’s current bylaw

limits the size of any wall sign to 107 sq/ft, however Food Basics would like to install 829 sq/ft of signage, so a variance is required if their signs are to be permitted. On the east elevation of the building the signage covers 260 sq/ft and on the south side of the structure signs will cover 130 sq/ft.

The letter received by Council from Marielle Trapani, a representative for the business, claims the signage requested is proportional to the size of the

building (33,000 sq/ft).

Echoing his comments at the previous Council meeting that 25 percent of a very large building could amount to a massive sign, Councillor Richard Rybiak said he would not be supporting the motion as it stood.

“I see no problem with either the east elevation or the south elevation but the north elevation with both a sign and a large green banner with a motto or marketing on it I find that to be somewhat much,” he said.

Maybe applying a little creativity here might help “I think that if something came back that was attractive and within the right scale, certainly we can provide a variance. In my case I

would like to see something that hits me a little less hard.”

Building on Mayor Dave Augustyn’s comment that “the type of development we have in this area is not like in other communities,” Councillor Gary Accursi said he would like to see Food Basics rethink the design of their signage so that it will fit better with the unique look of the town.

“G20 Justice Ride” a healing experience

In an attempt to heal the emotional and psychological scars left from the alleged stomping they received from federal security forces at the G20 Summit in June 2010, Ridgeville resident John Pruyn and his daughter Sarah travelled west to begin a cross-country journey they labelled the G20 Justice Ride.

Disillusioned and disturbed by their newfound impression of Canadian values and democracy, they landed in Victoria, B.C. and started peddling east in hopes of reconnecting with the country they once admired.

“I was trying to get away from the negativity that was festering inside of me,” said Pruyn.

“I was stuck in a loop and I couldn’t get out of it. In a way the trip has helped me break that cycle of constant preoccupation with what happened to us at the G20, and that Canadians didn’t seem to care.”

Describing the trek as soothingly intense, Pruyn said the ride was the most incredible and arduous physical activity he had ever experienced.

Covering an average of 140 kilometres a day, he said he would slip into a deep meditative state when he was cycling similar to what long distance runners call a “runner’s high.”

After completing the first 30 or 40 kilometres of the day, Pruyn said the two of them would start to feel the “biker’s high” come on.

“Once I got past that point I felt like I could bike all day long,” he said.

“I never felt as alive as I did on that bike ride. It was sort of a rest period for my mind where I wasn’t thinking about what happened to us at the G20.”

Traversing 10 provinces on their bikes, the father-daughter team witnessed the breathtaking natural beauty which distinguishes Canada from the rest of the world.

One moment during their trip that stood out for both John and Sarah was when cresting Roger’s Pass in B.C. After climbing 32 kilometres in the hot July sun they decided to rest for a while and enjoy the view from the top of the mountain.

The kindness they showed the marmots was returned to them a few days later by a pair of health care professionals when John collapsed from dehydration near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.

“After my father collapsed from heat exhaustion and had to be hospitalized for the night, they let us stay in their trailer for two days so he could recover,” Sarah said.

“We met a lot of kind people who took us in along the way.”

Spending an average of six hours a day on their bikes, John and Sarah got to see Canada from a unique perspective.

In spite of the overwhelming allure of the landscape, not all of their observations were pleasant.

dead wildlife rotting by the roadside.

“Plastic bottles are littered all across Ontario,” John said.

It was a sort of rest period for my mind where I wasn’t thinking about what happened to us “Provinces with deposits are much cleaner. Companies like Nestle, Coke and Pepsi should be demanding a deposit on all plastic bottles if they really want to stop the litter.”

From the sight of so many splattered turtles, moose, beavers and other creatures decomposing on the pavement, he said it was plain to see that the roads were a devastating barrier to wildlife.

He suggested that creating corridors for wildlife to cross the road safely could be one way to make the highways safer for both human and non-human animals.

The purpose of the G20 Justice Ride was not just for the sake of personal healing, John said.

Seeking an apology and justice for how they say they were abused by police at the G20 Summit, the main goal of their cross-Canada campaign was to raise awareness of the issues that compelled them to attend the demonstration in Queen’s Park in June 2010.

Pelham’s healing waters soothe injured soldiers

Kinsmen Craft Show back for seventh year

For the last seven years the Fonthill and District Kinsmen have helped to kick off the Christmas shopping season with their annual Craft Show. The popular event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 15 and Sunday, Oct. 16 from 10AM to 5PM at Centennial High School in Welland.

The local Christmas shopping event continues to grow every year in both the number of shoppers and vendors, says craft show organizer David Kuckyt. With 90-plus vendors participating in this year’s sale, the Kinsmen’s second largest fundraiser of the year will be the biggest one yet.

“There are a lot of vendors returning again this year but the show is going to be very different with so

many new vendors participating,” he said.

There’s no harm in getting into the Christmas spirit early

“There will be a lot of new options for shoppers to choose from. We have crafters, people selling food and homemade baked goods, wood work, embroideries, basically all things Christmas.”

Kuckyt says the Craft Show is much more than just a great shopping opportunity for residents to buy locally.

He says it also provides support to the community in other ways.

This year all of the proceeds raised at the door will go to support both Pathstone Mental Health and Special Olympics programs throughout the region.

With so many people in need of different kinds of support, there is no harm in getting into the Christmas spirit early, he says.

“Christmas time is a time for giving, so let’s get these people the support that they need to make their lives better,” says Kuckyt.

“We have supported the Special Olympics in the past and they are amazing people to work with. We are excited to be working with Pathstone Mental Health as well this year. Both of these organizations do so much for people in our community.”

Last Wednesday, 11 soldiers from the Ottawa and Kingston area along with volunteers from Trout Unlimited Niagara, Soldier On and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, gathered at a pond near Effingham Street and Sixteen Road to take part in this year’s Healing Waters Project.

Formed in 2005, this initiative has been helping active and retired military personnel recover from injuries or illnesses they acquired while serving their country, by giving them a chance to learn the calmative sport of fly fishing.

The three day program began last Tuesday at Megalomaniac Winery in Vine-

On Wednesday the group made their way to a privately owned pond in Pelham, where they learned to cast flies and catch fish. Later that night they visited the Calamus Winery in Jordan Station for a teaching on the art of tying flies and for another dinner together.

day the group made a stopover at the Franklin Club’s Rainbow Trout pond to test out their new skills.

Brian Green is a member of the board of directors at Trout Unlimited Niagara.

For four years he has helped with the program in Pelham. Seeing how the participants and the volunteers enjoy learning from one another, he said that the Healing Waters Project has been a huge success.

“There is a real social aspect to this program,” said Green.

“We hear from the soldiers all of the time that the fishing was great, but what really excited them was the chance to talk with civilians. Several of the soldiers last year told us that it was See SOLDIERS Page 10

“The police did not want to talk to us about our G20 experiences when we visited them,” John said.

“They did not even return our calls. Their minds are closed on the issue of police violence. They would either deny it or remain silent. My worst experience was when we went to see Bill Blair, who was running as a Liberal in Scarborough.

He was in his campaign office and someone who knew him went in and asked him to come out and talk to us.

We waited for an hour but he refused to come out.”

By the time John and Sarah landed in St. John’s, Newfoundland they had peddled a total of 8,020 kilometres. Although they did find some solace in their coast-to-coast campaign John says that he is still suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder due to his experience outside the G20 Summit.

The Pruyns have yet to receive the apology they have been waiting on for six-and-a-half years.

The Voice contacted Bill Blair’s office for comment.

“I am very pleased with what this Council has done,” he said.

“When you look at the development that is coming to east Fonthill, I think it fits in well with our community. Keeping the commercial along Hwy. 20 and not letting it creep back in towards Port Robinson Road was a good move. There is a good balance between residential and commercial in the area. In the residential area there is also a good balance between single family dwellings and multiple unit housing.”

As the mayor of Pelham in the early 2000s, Leavens was instrumental in purchasing these lands. Recognizing that developable land would soon become scarce because a large portion of the town would be protected by the incoming Greenbelt legislation, Leavens said he knew it was the right time to buy.

Soldier On is a program run by the Canadian Armed Forces that supports currently serving members and veterans to overcome their physical or mental health illness or injury through physical activity and sport.

Sgt. James McIntrye is the Ontario Regional representative for the program. Before he took on his current role with the organization he experienced its healing benefits firsthand.

McIntyre said his experience with Soldier On was essential to his healing process.

“I was introduced to Soldier On early in my recovery and it really helped me get moving and stay active,” he said.

“It enabled me to keep a positive attitude and make really big gains in my recovery. Seeing the immense impact Soldier On had on other people and on myself, I really wanted to help out.”

Each year McIntyre organizes 10 to 12 events across the province. Nationally, Soldier On hosts some 60 events to help members of the Canadian Armed Forces heal from their injuries or illnesses.

“There are a lot of injured or ill soldiers who are really benefiting from this program,” he said.

“A lot of these guys and girls are new to fly fishing so hopefully by introducing them to the sport they will use it as motivation to get out of the house and stay active.”

Joining the soldiers and volunteers for this year’s Healing Waters Project as an instructor was expert fly fisherman and host of The

New Fly Fisher television show on WFN and PBS, Bill Spicer. Tying and casting flies for more than 25 years, he said he was proud to be a part of such an excellent program.

Retired soldier Melanie Cassey got hooked on fly fishing at last year’s event in Pelham.

Coming back again to hone her skills, she said that the program has been especially beneficial for her.

Cassey said there is a fair amount of mental work and preparation that goes into fly fishing. There is also a very meditative quality to it, she said.

Referring to the repetitiveness of casting as zenlike, she finds that fly fishing gives her peace of mind.

“You are out in the environment listening to the birds and the wind. It is very grounding,” said Cassey.

“Being connected and focussed fully on what you are doing, and being completely present in the moment allows you to let everything go and just enjoy that moment in time.”



$36 million Community Centre contract signed On Monday, October 3, Pelham Town Council approved a standard Canadi-

an Construction Documents Committee contract for construction management

with Ball Construction Inc. for the Pelham Community Centre.

The contract stipulates a guaranteed price of $36,204,777 for the new community centre, and includes an incentive for cost savings which will be credited 60% to the Town and 40% to Ball Construction.

The contract further requires Ball Construction to work with the Community Centre Oversight Committee to ensure the project comes

in on time and on budget.

“We are pleased that this contract locks in an upper limit for the project’s construction costs, while also offering a strong incentive to encourage cost savings,” said Mayor Dave Augustyn.

“Signing this contract is yet another milestone toward building our new Community Centre.”

Curiosity key to learning says Evan Bernard

At the end of the 2015/2016 school year Evan Bernard started his summer off in an extraordinary way — he decided to keep studying.

Selected as one of 40 students from around the world, Bernard participated in an international two week summer program at the Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics, in Waterloo.

Founded in 1999, the Institute is a leading centre for scientific research, training and educational outreach in foundational theoretical physics.

Not thinking that he would be accepted, he nearly didn’t apply. However, after a little encouragement from his parents, he decided to give it a shot.

“I didn’t think I would get in, but I tried anyways and it ended up being the most rewarding experience of my life so far,” Bernard says.

“You learn so much when you are surrounded by a great community where knowledge is everywhere.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I would suggest for any students

who are interested in physics to apply.”

Ever since he was young, Bernard has been questioning why things act the way they do.

Describing physics as the basis of the world that we live in, he believes it is important for people to understand how they interact with the universe they are a part of.

“I find myself constantly wanting to know more about the universe,” says Bernard.

“My curiosity, it drives me to research more, and then from that I find something

else that I am interested in, and then it just branches off. I was hoping the program would help me narrow down what I am interested in but it made me more interested in everything.”

The daily schedule for students was comprised of a series of lectures, experiments, group research, and mentoring sessions with expert physicists. They also had the privilege of going on a field trip to SNOLAB in Sudbury. Located two kilometres underground in an active mine, the SNOLAB specializes in the study of neutrino and dark matter physics.

Now in Grade 12, Bernard already has his sights set on continuing his studies at university next year. His teacher Casey Marzec sees a bright future for the young

The one exception he says is that he now feels a public pool would improve the quality of life for residents. Looking at the big picture, he expects that the community will benefit in multiple ways from the development.

“We have a high proportion of seniors in town and many of them have difficulty getting out of town to do shopping that they can’t do here,” says Leavens.

“The more shopping we have here the more convenient it is for everybody, and the better it is for local businesses.”

Leavens believes that the new commercial development will discourage local residents from travelling out of town to do their shopping.

He says the Community Centre and its amenities will also help to keep people in town.

Acknowledging concerns from the public that the town could lose its character, he says, “It’s up to the community and its lead-

ership to continue to foster that small town feeling.

The more shopping we have here the more convenient it is for everybody Quite frankly that’s one of the things the Community Centre is going to do for the town.”

As the owner of Pet Valu in Fonthill, Leavens thinks that the local business community is going to receive a boost in prosperity once the new stores open their doors.

He is not worried about the increased competition.

“If you don’t like competition you shouldn’t be in business,” Leavens said.

“There have been numerous studies on where people spend their money

and they all show that it is somewhere around 75 cents of every dollar gets spent out of town. Anything we can do to keep people in town spending their money in town benefits all of the businesses, not just one.”

He says that his customers value quality service and merchandise. He’s confident that people will continue to support his business and other local businesses in town operating with the same philosophy.

“If we provide the service and the quality goods at the right price, people are still going to come back to do business with us,” he said.

“You do that little bit extra to provide the kind of service that people expect in a small town. You don’t see that too much anymore and you never see it in the big box stores.”

Leavens lost his re-election bid by a scant 400 votes to current Mayor David Augustyn in 2006. He says that his days as a politician are behind him.

“I had my kick at the can and got some of what I thought was necessary accomplished. Time for new blood.”

He says that although the Perimeter Institute is a world-renowned leader in the scientific community, “Most Canadians don’t even know it exists right here in our backyard.”

The Institute’s philosophy, Marzec says, is to foster a better understanding of the universe by encouraging collaboration among some of the greatest minds alive today.

At the end of each day, Bernard says, he would take part in such an exchange when the entire group would assemble to share their ideas and discuss what they had learned. For him this was one of the most enlightening aspects of the program.

“Because we all come from such diverse backgrounds it’s important for everyone to collaborate,” Bernard says.

“We all learn a lot more that way. Before I was doing research by myself but I didn’t realize how many other students my age had

In recent years Marzec has observed an increase of students developing an interest in studying physics. Providing free videos and experiments to use in the classroom, the Institute is an excellent resource for teachers to nurture their students’ interests, he says.

“When kids hear about newer theories online or in the media such as quantum physics, quantum computers, Einstein’s general theory of relativity and time travel, they naturally want to know more,” says Marzec.

Bernard’s mentor over the two weeks was Kendrick Smith, a professor from the University of Waterloo.

During their time together,

Smith taught Bernard and a small group of other students how to calculate the age of the universe. Working so closely with one of the most accomplished cosmologists in the world was a great honour, says Bernard.

Overall his summer experience has left him feeling inspired to learn as much as he can about the nature of the universe.

“I’ve started to look at everything with a different perspective,” says Bernard.

“I developed a more fundamental knowledge of the way things work, and it has made me question everything further. We need to satisfy our curiosity as much as we can because you never know where that curiosity will take you.”

Schrödinger’swhat now?

Schrödinger’s cat is a thought experiment, sometimes described as a paradox, devised by Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. The scenario presents a cat that may be simultaneously both alive and dead,a state known as a quantum superposition, as a result of being linked to a random subatomic event that may or may not occur. The thought experiment is also often featured in theoretical discussions of the interpretations of quantum mechanics. Theft of aluminum beams from construction site

Last Friday, Niagara Regional Police attended the construction site at the Burgoyne Bridge, St. Catharines, in response to a theft complaint. Sometime between 5:00 PM on Wednesday October 5, and 6:00 AM on Thursday October 6, unknown suspect(s) entered the gated and locked compound where they spent considerable time disman-

tling four large metal prep platforms.

In total 40 aluminum beams, measuring 14 feet in length, 5 inches in height and 3 inches in width, were stolen from the site.

Each aluminum beam weighs approximately 50 pounds and is identified with blue and white stickers in the name ‘Pro Forme’ and ‘Hi-Lite’.

The stolen beams are valued at $20,000. Police are asking members of the public with any information to

Police seek public’s assistance in hit & run collision

On Sunday September 25, shortly after 2:30 AM, members of the Niagara Regional Police Service responded to the area of Hemlock Street and Hazel Street in St.Catharines for a report of a pedestrian that

had been struck by a motor vehicle that failed to remain at the scene.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that a disturbance had taken place between a number of individuals in the area just prior to the collision. As the group was dispersing, a vehicle turned onto Hemlock Street and struck a male party, the driver of the vehicle made no effort to stop and subsequently fled the scene.

The male victim was transported to the Niagara

Health System - St.Catharines Site where he underwent surgery for his injuries and has since been released from the hospital.

Detectives with the St. Catharines Detective Office have taken over this investigation and have conducted multiple witness interviews.

As a result of these interviews, Detectives have managed to obtain a description of the suspect vehicle in this incident which is described as follows: A Dark Blue or Black Ford F150 approxi-

mately 8-10 years old.

Detectives are asking that Collision Repair Shops and Automotive Part Suppliers contact police should they be approached by an individual seeking repair and/or parts for a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description with damage consistent with having been involved in a motor vehicle collision.
