HAIST ST. HAUNTING RETURNS
A pair of Sundays not soon forgotten BY MARJORIE POULIE

After a decade of decorating, cryptmaster Rosemary Dougan is an experienced hand at raising Halloween goosebumps. BY DON RICKERS
Special to the VOICE
If Public Works staffers at the Town of Pelham are interested in observing effective “traffic calming” measures, all they need to do is drop by the home of Rosemary Dougan and husband, Jim, at 1122 Haist Street. The Dougans have resided at this
address for 35 years, but it’s only in the past decade that their house has become something of an area attraction, causing curious motorists to pause as they pass. Halloween is the current motif, with plenty of jack-o-lanterns, skeletons, ghouls and ghosts, but the Dougans also have front yard seasonal displays for Christmas, Easter,
Thanksgiving, and other celebrations. “On Valentine's Day, Jim puts out hearts on the lawn…and bunnies for Easter. He’s just a big kid at heart,” said Rosemary. Normally at Halloween, the Dougans have a haunted house built on the driveway for local children to visit, but COVID precautions have put

that on hold for this year. Rosemary says that it isn’t unusual for them to have almost 400 visitors on Halloween. She figures that 150 is a more realistic projection for this year. She will be encouraging social distancing and all pandemic safety protocols, and is hopeful that cautious parents will still bring their kids by for a look at the scary scenario.
t home in Fenwick, after church one Sunday, I started the snazzy coffee maker my daughter Lia and her husband Trent gave me. While the coffee glugged and dribbled, I went to get the Sunday Soup from the cold back porch. I was brought up on Sunday Soup. After my California mother, Wilhelmina, had spent years making the American full Sunday dinner of potatoes, roast, gravy, and veg, she moved to Neerlandia, a northern Alberta farming community, where the farmers’ wives all said that the only food they ate for Sunday dinner was the soup and buns they had prepared the day before. This sounded wonderful to mom, but before she could introduce this change to our family, she had to right this change with her conscience. See COLUMN SIX back page
