HIS SUMMER, Pelham streets and country roads were plentiful with runners, joggers and walkers.

As a community, we've been awarded Walk Friendly and Bicycle Friendly status by international organizations, so it's to be expected Pelham is home to many runners of all ages.

Winter's approach, if we have one this year, will divide this group into those that enjoy the challenges and invigoration of running outdoors all year, and those that prefer the comfort and shelter of treadmills at the YMCA, private clubs, or their own home.

I’ve got to admit, when I hear the word treadmill, gerbil wheel rather than indoor running comes to mind.

Not that there’s anything wrong with treadmills.

One such ad ran last week from Marianne Stewart, who won in Ward 1. Trouble is, the ad said she won in Ward 3. To set the record straight, Stewart—a.k.a.

“The Pie Lady”—is not attempting an expansion of empire, and definitely won only in Ward 1!...Timely displays: The Pelham Historical Society advises that its displays in both Fonthill and Fenwick branches for the next three weeks will be Remembrance Centenary-themed…One of Trump’s favourite tropes: Thank you to whoever dropped off a copy of the Niagara-Wheatfield Tribune at our door last Friday. The western New York/Tonawanda-based weekly carried an editorial headlined (and starred by our mystery gifter), “Time to stand up for a free press: We’re not the enemy.” This is one of Donald Trump’s go-to lines, this “enemy of the people” stuff, and even here in Niagara we’ve heard echoes of the same coming from Niagara Region headquarters as well as our own Pelham Town Hall. Let’s hope that incoming councils in both buildings throw away this particular dog whistle when taking their oaths the first week of December...Is it Gravol or champagne? The paper went to press before the U.S. midterm election results were known. For the sake of the world’s collective sanity, let’s hope that at least the U.S. House of Representatives has been returned to grown-up hands. The Senate was probably too much to hope for...Speaking of thank-yous: As weeks turned into months this year, I’ve increasingly worried that buried in the email and postal backlog are items sent in that deserve thanks. If I’ve seemingly overlooked something you’ve sent, my apologies! We all need Mini-Me’s around here. (Brian Garrard, I know for a fact that I owe you a photo or two)…

A tasty time: The Kinsmen are putting on their annual senior holiday dinner soon, and this year it’s being held in the spacious new community centre. NRPS impaired driving charges

Pelham CAO absent

Town of Pelham CAO Darren Ottaway has not been into work for approximately the past two weeks. Ottaway’s current status is unclear. Town Public Relations and Marketing Specialist Marc MacDonald would not say why Ottaway was not on the job, nor when he would return. “I do not know when the CAO is scheduled to return to the office,” responded MacDonald. “The Treasurer, Teresa Quinlin, is Acting CAO during this time.” Neither Ottaway nor Mayor David Augustyn responded to opportunities for comment.

Trail christening

An unofficial hiking path that the Town elected to develop into a recreational trail was officially christened the “Gerry Berkhout Trail” on Saturday, November 3. According to a Town statement, the approximately 6 KM-long trail runs along the former TH&B railway line, with entry points at Murdoch Street and Fenwick's Centennial Park. Gerry Berkhout, who is outgoing Mayor David Augustyn’s father-in-law, is a former Town Councillor, past Citizen of the Year, and longtime Rotarian.

Saved from the hot pot

The Lincoln County Humane Society is looking for homes for 17 Korean dogs.

The LCHS worked with Humane Society International to bring the dogs into the Society’s care. All 17 dogs

With the financial backing of television personality Simon Cowell, the dogs made their way to St. Catharines in early October and went through a quarantine and relaxation period.

Now the dogs are available for adoption. “These dogs will take love and training to be a house pet, but they all have great potential and once socialized they will make terrific companions,” said Cortnie Welychka, Senior Animal Care Technician, LCHS. Interested adopters can come to the shelter during adoption hours to see the available dogs. “We are proud to be part of the partnership with Humane Society Interna-

tional and Simon Cowell and we are pleased to help these dogs that certainly deserve loving homes,” said Kevin Strooband, Executive Director. “They are sweet dogs that are just waiting for someone to help them learn how to be a dog and enjoy life.” Prospective adopters may contact Strooband at (905) 682-0767.

Child Exploitation charges

In an effort to bring further attention and deterrence to driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, the Niagara Regional Police Service reports the names of those people who are charged with an alleged criminal impaired driving offence in the Region. None of the following charges have been proved in court.

In addition to being charged, these individuals are also bound by a Ministry of Transportation 90-Day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension and are prohibited from operating a motor vehicle on a roadway.

The public is encouraged to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service Traffic Safety Hotline or Crime Stoppers to report those who are driving in contravention of the suspension.

The following individuals have been charged criminally with impaired driving by alcohol or drugs, driving with a blood alcohol concentration above 80 mgs of alcohol in 100 ml of blood, or refusing to provide a breath / blood sample.

Library CEO shelves it After successful stint in Pelham, Kirk Weaver heads to private sector

After almost 20 years working in the public sector, Pelham Library CEO Kirk Weaver is closing the books and starting a new chapter.

Weaver has been LIbrary CEO for the past four years.

It was a position he entered with no previous library services training and which had been vacant for a year.

“At the time I was hired, the Library was in a period in its history where it needed someone to focus on the financial, policy and strategic planning aspects of the organization,” Weaver said.

With Deputy CEO Amy Guilmette having a Master of Library Science (MLIS) education, Weaver said their combined skills and education created a good balance.

“Having no previous experience in libraries, Kirk listened to staff ideas and was instrumental in making those ideas come to life,” Guilmette said.

“I was also able to build on my experience in municipal government,” said Weaver, “to help restore a

healthy relationship between the Library and the Town.”

Not only did Weaver restore the relationship, but also built up connections with Pelham’s community service organizations through past experience acquired with community engagement.

Weaver extended himself into the community by meeting with local service organizations to learn their mandates and look for projects to build a partnering foundation.

“This allowed me to gain insight on the community’s needs and tap into our existing potential [for growth],” he said.

An example is with the Rotary Club of Fonthill. The partnership established the development of the Reading House at the new community centre, where kids can play while waiting for siblings who are participating in various sporting events or activities.

“Because we are just down the street, hopefully it will increase awareness

access to materials through the Libraries in Niagara Co-operative.”

G

ENERALLY SPEAKING, societal movements and directions move at a snail’s pace.

Likely, that is a good thing, as change should be carefully considered as to prospects and consequences. Some of those more recent movements are within the grammatical construct referred to as “-isms.”

For example, in recent times our society has had more open-minded discussions and widespread considerations about such as sexism, racism, Anti-Semitism and hetero-sexism. Not all of these discussions have been without elevated rancor and divisive demonstrations.

Nonetheless, if one takes a moment and stands back from the memories of the discord that accompanied deliberations around these -isms it appears that a more temperate and accepting society evolved, extremist rejection lessened, and unbridled bias diminished.

Two examples of such social movements that have had significant impacts are #MeToo and Gay Pride.

There is some evidence that these two examples have dramatically changed societal attitudes and practices,

resulting in a more respectful treatment of women and members of the LGBTQ communities.

Nonetheless, there is an-

cates and develop the tactics to gain the required attention a wrongheaded societal -ism needs. There is some evidence on the social media that the movement to correct this demon-based bias is gaining momentum.

With the growth in numbers, health, strength and wisdom of the senior sectors of our society, the movement will gain traction and changefor-the-better society’s recognition and treatment of its most mature personages.

For example, the fashion and cosmetics industries are now more cognizant of the senior sector and likely in the forefront of those who provide a range of products and services to serve the needs of this segment of society.

This is especially observable in the women’s markets and ‘senior’s days’ at a growing number of retail outlets. The explosive growth of yoga and other exercise activities for seniors is clearly evident.

Letters Appreciates Pelham Transit A recent weekend was my nephew’s birthday and we decided to do a pub crawl in Fonthill to celebrate the occasion.

Planning the event we looked into our local transit service (Pelham Transit) to get us there and home safely. The experience prompted me to write this letter.

Living in North Pelham for the last three years, I have often wondered where the bus went as I saw it drive by. Now that I know, I am so impressed with the service, ease and flexibility of this wonderful resource.

We flagged the bus down in front of my nephew’s house, for free, with a destination of Sobeys (there is a gentleman in Pelham that will find that quite funny I’m

sure). Using Pelham Transit, we were able to walk to our local destinations and thoroughly enjoyed our evening.

We pre-scheduled the ride home with “Dial-a -Ride,” and we were picked up on time and with patience, by a lovely bus driver named Sue who got us all home safely.

After reviewing the Pelham Transit website I now also know that I can take the bus to visit my nephew. How amazing is that, when we both live in a rural community!

OPINION The spooks among us yet roam Well let me tell you ‘bout the way she looked, the way she acted and the colour of her hair.

Her voice was soft and cool, her eyes were clear and bright.

But she’s not there...

With Halloween just past, we are still surrounded by all things ghostly. On a recent Wednesday evening, the Pelham Library treated a dozen brave souls to chilling tales of Niagara hauntings by Dr. Peter Andrew Sacco.

Dr. Sacco hosted Cogeco’s Haunted Niagara and is currently at the helm of Paranormal Profilers (check them out on YouTube.) His goal is to bring historical context and scientific evidence to these hauntings. A self -proclaimed skeptic —make that “the biggest skeptic” on paranormal matters—Peter states he has now seen and experienced enough events to believe in the possibility.

Now I might be jumping the gun here, but whoever designed Summersides Boulevard definitely was not considering the safety of bicyclists and handicapped people, who use electric scooters/wheelchairs. The width of the road is barely wide enough for vehi-

cles, let alone bicycles etc. The median in the centre of the road is excessively wide, reasons unknown. So as I said earlier about jumping the gun, perhaps sidewalks are in the planning, and if so, I would highly recommend the sooner the better, before someone gets seriously injured or killed. Something should be done!

Embrace, not reject How sad it is that one of your readers has taken the Voice to task for publishing factual information on the new trade agreement that affects all Canadians [Letters, “Not pleased at guest appearance by Foreign Minister,” Oct. 31, p. 5].

No matter what political party one supports, we as Canadians coast to coast to coast stuck together to rebuke Mr. Trump, yet the lonely voice of T. Cole feels Pelham is not part of the combined effort.

It is a time for all of us to rejoice and be thankful. In my humble opinion we should embrace Ms. Freeland and her colleagues for a job well done.

Third Niagara Music Award for Pelham-based band Vinyl Flux wins honours as Best Bar Band

If the band members of Vinyl flux were searching for the gushing springs of the Fountain of Youth, they found it through performing iconic rock hits from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s.

Established their bandin 2010, Joseph Minicucci, Dennis Ceci, Phil Saglimbeni, Max Turavani and Rob Cave have performed in a variety venues, from intimate pub settings to mainstream festivals in Niagara and throughout Ontario. Last year, the group gave 150 performances.

All members utilize their vocal talents led by Cave; Minicucci and Ceco play guitar; Saglimbeni works the bass, while Turavani plays the drums Minicucci and Ceci have almost 45 years of music experience each, while the remaining members have 30 years.

“Everyone is equal in the band as each member has their own distinct piece of the puzzle,” said Minicucci.

“Yeah, we worked in the recording studios, wrote our own songs, had our music played on radio stations, but when we got together, we decided we will perform the songs we know and love the best,” Minicucci said.

When Minicucci approached Ceci about establishing Vinyl Flux, Ceci was hesitant as he did want to hang up the guitar, however he was convinced once Minicucci said, “We will play what we

want to play with the right members.”

The pair have been performing together since the late 1960s and early 1970s, including recording original material.

Now, eight years later, Vinyl Flux have received the Niagara Music Awards’ honour for Best Bar Band three times, 2013, 2014 and again in 2018.

The Niagara Music Awards celebrates the best musical talent in the Niagara Region by annually recognizing local artists with prizes in 30 categories, including Rock, Jazz, Blues, Hip Hop and Female Vocalist.

Minicucci credits the band’s Niagara followers, as the award is a fan-generated honour.

“To have the following that we do, especially when they know we are playing in a new venue, it’s a really cool feeling.”

“We are meticulous, we pride ourselves on giving the audience a concert like experience,” he said.

“To receive an award like this three times shows that we are the epitome of what a bar should be.”

Minicucci said the band’s ultimate goal with their performances is to take people back into time from an era of songwriting that “has never been replicated.”

Vinyl Flux has even received positive feedback from the Canadian rock bands they have covered, including Burton Cummings from The Guess Who, and

For Minicucci, the “Vinyl Era” brings back a flood of memories.

“I remember, to save a quarter, we would hitchhike to St. Paul Street every Saturday so we could go to Sam the Record Man and buy the latest record. Then,

we would go to Diana Sweets and pore over the album covers and read the song lyrics.”

Vinyl Flux has followers of all age groups and for Minicucci, “Music is the string that connects all ages.”

Has doubts about carbon plan practicality I read with interest the letter by Mr Rae extolling the virtues of the federal government's carbon pricing plan which will be imposed upon us in the new year [Letters, “New carbon tax plan a good first step,” Oct. 31, p. 5].

I confess I lack Mr Rae’s enthusiasm for this “plan” while accepting that a world wide reduction in CO2 emissions would be beneficial to our global environment.

I fail to understand, however, how the Trudeau “plan” to “price pollution” will carry the benefits promised.

Firstly, the “plan” will not achieve any measurable reduction in global CO2 emissions. Canada

emits between 1.6% and 2% of global atmospheric CO2. Mr. Trudeau has acknowledged that if Canada suspended all man-made industrial emissions for one full year, China could achieve the same reductions by doing the same for one week.

But China and India have been given a “pass” on the Paris Accord until 2030, during which time both countries will continue to develop and commission many new coal-fired generating stations while we continue to pay an exorbitant “global adjustment” for every kilowatt hour our renewable energy sources produce.

A “plan” that does not achieve its purpose is not

Secondly, I have yet to see an honest assessment from the federal government of Canada’s actual carbon balance, i.e., carbon absorption vs. carbon emission.

Certain studies suggest Canada's existing ability to sequester and absorb carbon through our boreal forests, wetlands, lakes and land mass (carbon sinks) means we are absorbing 20% to 30% more carbon than we are emitting.

Our country should be a net beneficiary of carbon pricing mechanisms from major CO2 emitters if such is the case. A “plan” which sees Canada as a major contributor to global environmental health and rewards us accordingly would be welcomed by all.

Lastly, I fail to see the common sense in a “plan” which professes to reduce carbon emissions by “pricing pollution” and then pays our citizens to continue burning fossil fuel. Somehow this seems self-defeating to me.

And having lived in BC in the recent past, I witnessed the provincial government promise to make carbon pricing revenue-neutral through income tax reductions, only to retreat from that promise within a few short years. Promises made...promises broken.

This “plan” makes no sense unless its true purpose is to redistribute income or serve a political purpose. Even the Nobel Prize-winning Mr. Nordhaus acknowledged in his

2013 book, The Climate Casino, that only when global climate policy defines a set carbon price, enforced nationally and internationally by various sanctions, including tariffs on non complying nations, will such a policy be effective.

So, rather than pursuing a “plan" for political purpose, I would prefer our government pursue an honest plan which acknowledges our limited impact on global climate and strives for international recognition of the positive contribution Canada makes to the global environment. We should let those nations which can meaningfully impact positive change take the lead and catch up.

The doctors who served and healed

OR GRANT BLACK, the advent of Remembrance Day has been one of discovery, in addition to the recollection and tribute to all the Canadian soldiers and three generations of his family who devoted much of their lives in World Wars I and II. “Lest we Forget,” which is typically a part of the Remembrance Day edict, became a re-learning process for Grant, as his daughter’s research into their roots unearthed many new details and defining moments of his past. At 89, the reflection for Grant comes with a sense of fondness and a deeper understanding of the lives lived during a tumultuous period in history.

Unequivocally, his revelations surface at a perfect time, as the treaty marking the end of World War I occurred in 1918, making

Remembrance Day 100 years old, noted Grant. As a former school teacher for many years, and then a principal of several schools including Mapleview School in Pelham, Grant recalls taking classes to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies. However, this important date in history was always held closer to his heart, and meant more than just fulfilling a job requirement. For Grant, his family and forefathers, devoted a large part of their lives to the war effort and have the badges and stripes to prove it.

One such recent search of Grant’s family tree included learning that his grandfather on his mother’s side was Lieutenant Colonel Thomas William Hubert Young, who received a ceremonial sword, known as the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, in honour of his service in the Canadian Medical Corporation, commanding

several military hospitals during World War I. Grant only shrugs his shoulders in a bemused fashion at the ornate and lengthy title awarded pioneers in health care.

The Order of St. John eventually became known for the future organizations it founded, such as St. John Ambulance and various hospitals erected during the war and post-war periods.

While Grant’s father, also named Grant, was born in 1899, he served by assisting patients in Camp Borden and Leaside Hospital in WWI.

By WWII he received his doctorate and became an anesthesiologist, and his specialty was treating soldiers poisoned by chlorine, a lethal nerve gas.

Grant said his grandfather, Malcolm, had three sons and a daughter, whose lives were changed by the war. Most of his uncles were born around 1890 and stationed in Europe, mostly Belgium and France. During WWI, his uncle Stuart Black quickly demonstrated a pr of i c ie n c y in aviation when he was fresh out of high school, and made lieutenant in record time.

He joined the Royal Force Corps, 99th Squadron in England as a fighter pilot, who targeted and eliminated l o n g-r a n g e industrial sites in Rhineland, Germany.

Although he was an adept pilot, he was shot down over Germany and became a prisoner of war in 1918. Grant still has the original notice mailed to his father declaring his uncle Stuart was missing in action. The heart-wrenching part for his relatives was “the not knowing” whether he was dead or alive, since communications back then were poor, he said.

Fortunately, Stuart was released not long after, when the war was over. Grant recalls as a youth spending a little time with Stuart at a cottage in Port Colborne, though the fighter pilot didn’t talk much about his time overseas. World War I ended with some 67,000 Canadians killed and 250,000 wounded.

Pelham joins national Bells of Peace Initiative On November 11, bells will ring out in churches throughout Pelham, joining the rest of Canada to mark 100 years commemorating the end of the First World War. At 4:57 PM, the ringing of 100 bells will emulate the moment in 1918 when church bells across Canada rang out to share the news: the First World War was over.

As the sun goes down, a bell or bells will be rung 100 times in five-second intervals across the municipality to honour the sacrifices of Canadians who served in the 1914-1918 war, and to remember the horrors of war, the cost to society, and the promise of peace.

She worked at a sanatorium, and volunteered by selling stamps to raise money to prevent tuberculosis (TB). Grant says his entire family are either doctors or teachers.

Grant does remember the rhetoric: “They called World War I, the ‘Great War’ until the Second World War out did the first one.”

While Canada was never bombed in either World War I or II, there was always

As Major, Kenneth was sent overseas in 1941, but the following year he returned to Canada and was appointed to the directorate of military training for the national defense headquarters in Ottawa. By 1944, Kenneth was decorated as a Member of the Order of the British Empire, and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Unfortunately, due to ill health, he died in hospital in London, Ontario in April 18, 1945. While Kenneth wasn’t

During WWII, Grant recalls his father also talking about treating several German soldiers at Camp Borden that were injured, and shipped there.

According to Grant, the Germans were happy to remain in Canada, because they didn’t want to return to the front lines to fight in the Russian campaign, which eventually led to Germany’s demise. Grant said his father was aware of Adolf Hitler’s plans to exterminate the Jews, although back then there was not a great deal of publicity or immediate

“Things were different then. There was also the Japanese internment in Canada, because of the bombing of Pearl Harbour, we saw them as enemies,” noted Grant.

As the war progressed there were many changing negotiations and deals, regarding allies and enemies.

Most importantly, he recalls an overall fear of Germany’s aggressive and relentless onslaught to takeover Europe, and eventually the rest of the world. When the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb on Japan, he said many Canadians were worried that Germany was going to adapt nuclear warfare and similar technologies.

working to improve its design, and it was only a matter of time before they used it. The Germans had a lot of science,” said Grant.

Like the proverbial bell, war takes its toll. Grant’s family being medics experienced a great deal of trauma, but have lived to bear witness to history. Today, Grant says societies think differently about war, and recognize the atrocity of killing other human beings. Talking about soldiers, he said, “Look what it does to them. Veterans come back and some commit suicide, because of the shock of war. It’s the mental health part of it, and they are trying to help people deal with it better today.”

During last year’s Remembrance Day, a speaker came to Grant’s retirement home with models and pictures of World War II, and the contributions made by famed Canadian fighter pilot, Billy Bishop, which he clearly found interesting.

Grant makes it a point to attend Armistice Day services.

As a former principal and teacher, Grant is still learning, especially about his own family.

Another genealogical search of the Black family dates back several generations to United Empire Loyalists, and a bloodline connection to William McDougall, who was later appointed Lieutenant–Governor of the Northwest Territories by first Canadian Prime Minister, John A. MacDonald.

McDougall was sent to Alberta to help settle skirmishes and disputes between Metis, European settlers and the United Empire Loyalists settling in the Red River Valley area in Alberta. This occurred in 1867, just prior to Confederation.

There were many other large and small battles that occurred before Canada became the country we know today.

Grant admits, “The smaller [battles] don’t affect us as much, but it’s still very historically interesting for me.”

Despite all the tragedy and changes created by the two major wars, Grant looks upon Remembrance Day with reverent nostalgia. As for Grant, it’s a day for everyone to become a history buff. “Remembrance Day is not like any other holiday.

It’s not a celebration, it’s remembering.” ♦

The Rotary Club of Fonthill recognized five community-oriented individuals at its Annual Rotary Evening of Celebration on Thursday, November 1. Lookout Point Golf Club was the backdrop for the evening’s event, with some 60 people attending, including Rotarians, their spouses, and the community award recipients.

Three Rotarians and three community members were recognized for their community efforts reflecting the organization’s mandate, Service Above Self.

Then a voice could be heard saying, “Where’s Peter?” and “Peter soaker.”

The spirit found this

amusing and taunted Peter about his soaker for the time they were there.

An incident that I find amusing occurred at Willowbank in Niagara on the Lake. Peter unexpectedly felt a sharp pain in his lower leg twice and another crew member also felt pain in his lower leg. The mediums soon sensed the spirit of a racoon.

I guess it either didn’t appreciate the intrusion or was hungry.

One of his scariest experiences was at a house. There were 12 people present, including guest investigator, and the Tesla box was set up.

Medium Michele immediately sensed that this was not a friendly spirit. They heard a voice that filled the entire room, i.e., it did not emanate from the ghost box, and then witnessed an orb with legs run up a wall and disappear.

The owner was informed that the building needed a clearing. Later that evening when in bed Peter had the sense that someone was watching him from his bedroom door all night. Four members of the team had similar experiences or suffered ill effects. They were targeted for awhile. Peter does not know if the owner followed their suggestions but he knows he’s not going back there.

He shared other experiences, but my last tale will be Niagara’s most famous and well-documented paranormal activity, which occurred in 1970 at a Church Street apartment in St Catharines.

Peter personally interviewed Bob “Scotty” Crawford, one of the police officers who witnessed the strange events involving an eleven-year-old boy, floating furniture, nois-

es, and moving objects. The paranormal events lasted 28 days.

Paranormal Profilers have created a re-enactment of the events based on police reports and the Crawford interview. The building and apartment had been thoroughly examined by engineers, the gas company, and police officers even bled the radiators—everything was in working order. The activity could not be explained.

“We had musicians in our house all the time growing up.”

He says he loves all instruments, but the guitar is his “weapon of choice, lifelong companion.” It’s Minicucci’s tool even when he worked on marketing and graphic design projects through his marketing agency.

“Music is conducive to my creativity.”

“My mom laughed at me one night when I fell asleep with the guitar in my arms looking as thought I was still playing.”

Performing the bar scene spans back into his mid-teens when he played six nights with a band that also owned a music store.

“My parents had a certain level of trust for them and were never worried.”

His favourite guitarists include B.B. King, Jimmy Page from Led Zepplin, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix.

Minicucci’s grandmother also encouraged his love for music.

“She was a pretty cool Italian grandma who loved Ed Sullivan and allowed me to listen to the same music my uncle did,” he said.

“I am blessed to have a balance in life where I can incorporate art and music into successful professional and musical endeavours,” Minicucci said.

“I was brought up to do what you love even if you don’t make a lot of money doing it.”

The expansion was one of Weaver’s most extensive initiatives he undertook as CEO. The Library is also in partnership with Brock University. Its students are currently researching how the Library can reach out to attract new patrons, including new and established residents who live in the area but don’t use Library services “The Library Board felt that was important, especially with Pelham’s increased growth,” Weaver said.

Pelham Library Board chair Tim Wright said the Board was “disappointed” Weaver is leaving, but fully understand he wants to advance his career.

“Kirk was a great communicator between the community and staff and showed great leadership,” Wright said.

“The Library Board had a strong vision, which he helped facilitate to establish a strong, vibrant strategic plan that we have been diligently following.”

In the past, libraries have been often known for their “shh” policy. Weaver said libraries are now evolving from an institutional-like setting into a social hub environment, especially with the variety of programming patrons can participate in.

Weaver said he is optimistic the Library will be able to continue with the growth initiatives that have been instituted. This includes transitioning from relying on people to come to the library, which is needed, but implementing a more community outreach approach to relay services the Library offers.

Overall, Weaver said he enjoyed his roles within the public sector.

“The opportunity to help people and make the community stronger is what attracted me to these positions.”

Weaver is moving on to become the executive director of a Burlington retirement facility.

Upon receiving the news that he was leaving Guilmette said she and the staff wish Weaver the best and are sure he will be “well-suited” and “quite successful” at his new position.

Wright and the board also extended well wishes, as Weaver “was a positive influence who made a great contribution to the library and community.

Guilmette will be acting CEO until a replacement is hired.

Have your say regarding curbside waste collection Niagara Region hosting community input session next Monday, November 12 Don’t let your concerns go out to the curb with the garbage.

On Monday, November 12, the Niagara Region is hosting a community input session at the community centre from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Representatives from the Region will be available to take questions and discuss concerns residents and business owners have which will then be used towards the future collection contract proposal.

This is in an effort to gather resident input for the Niagara Region's next waste collection contract (garbage, recycling and organics) for homes and businesses receiving Regional curbside collection.

The current contract ends in March 2021.

These numbers do not include drop-off depots or other forms of collection and diversion.

Strategic Communications and Public Affairs Officer Sean O’Brady said that figures are formally reported Region-wide as the collection contract is structured to eliminate municipal boundaries in order to maximize collection efficiencies.

The community input sessions regarding waste collection are the Region’s

MacLEAN, Mary Bernice Mary Bernice MacLean (nee Walsh) was born on March 27th, 1931 and was the fourth of nine children.

Known as Buddie to her brothers and sisters she remained connected to her surviving sisters, Connie and Mary, and her brother Donny. She met Larry in Montreal in the fall of 1951, fell in love, and was married on October 4th, 1952. Over the next 66 years Larry and Bernice experienced the joys and challenges of life together. For the many years she spent as an army wife she was able to maintain a loving and stable home for her family.

Left to remember Mom and love her forever are Susan (Tim) White of Bathurst, New Brunswick, Jim (Sue) of London, Ontario, Tom of Welland, Donald (Leanne) of Fergus, Michael (Leanne) of St Jacobs, and Juanita of Fonthill. Nana B was very proud of and took great delight in her 13 grandchildren (Matthew, Kathleen,Jonathan, Colin, Cameron, Allison, Carley, Ryan, Brittany, Emily, Ellen, Alex, and Maddie) and her 3 great-grandchildren (Luca, Remington, and Lucas).Mom was an avid reader, loved politics and the Blue Jays. A very special thanks to the amazing people that came into our lives providing compassionate care for our mom. We are forever grateful to Dr. Dooler, nurses Kim and Stephanie, and personal care workers Lisa, Vicki, and Breanna.
