HEN I WAS A CHILD and didn’t know better, I tried to make time go backwards.

My gran cautioned me never to do it again.

I had noticed her ancient wall-clock was still on Daylight Saving Time, so I stood on a chair, opened the glass cover and began moving the minute hand back.

When she saw me she told me to stop.

“You must never reverse the hands,” she said, helping me down from the chair.

“It’s not good for the clock.”

She removed the chime weight, then slowly pushed the minute hand around and around, clockwise, with the hour hand following, until she reached the correct time.

So I learned that turning the clock back was something you didn’t do even when you were supposed to be doing it. It wasn’t the last

Calm between the storms: With Pelham’s outgoing Town Council having made its final farewells, and 19 days to go before the new council and mayor take their oaths of office, an unsettling air of uncertainty has befallen Town Hall. With so many of the incoming councillors having expressed strong desires to see change in senior management, the question seems to be more when than if. On another contentious topic—the proposed sale of the old Pelham Arena—incoming council expresses its disappointment that this process has continued. See their collective commentary on page 5. Some councillors also chose to make individual statements…Another done deal: Residents in the Lookout neighbourhood have been informed that a contractor has already been chosen to develop two parks within their subdivision. All residents are invited to attend an unfortunately named “Idea Jamming” session this Saturday, from 1 to 4 PM in Lookout Park. Will attendees be invited to take their ideas and jam them? Or maybe fresh fruit and pectin is involved… Name that tune: The Pelham Historical Society is set to tell you all about 19th century music in southern Ontario, also this Saturday, starting at 2:30—see their ad, page 5, and the related history article on page 14. Much appreciated, Mike...There’s snow way: Speaking of time passing, wasn’t Canada Day just last week?

Some neighbours have already “idea jammed” their reflective markers in at the bottom of their driveways, anticipating this week’s forecast for snow, and the season that’s suddenly in front of us. Time jammed me in the chest last week when Facebook reminded me of my friend Gary’s 77th birthday. I went to his page to wish him well, only to discover that he’d died in May. Words fail. I went to work for him when I was 20 and he was 38. My father had died that same year, and Gary quickly became a friend and something between older brother and younger uncle. His influence on me was huge, and we stayed in close contact for years. But over the nearly four decades since, our contact was increasingly sporadic, down to a couple of emails a year. Despite diabetes taking a foot, then his kidneys, Gary remained amazingly positive. I last saw him in 2010, where he’d retired in Northern California, and I just assumed there would be more visits to come. If you haven’t said hello to an old friend for awhile, have at it.

Even with an increase of almost five percent Ottawa remains one of the least expensive places to live in Ontario.” This year’s survey looks back 20 years in some markets to 1998 prices, as well as comparing 2017 prices with this year’s results.

Stolen drag racer

Stolen from a business in the 800 block of Highway 20 West between overnight November 6 and found missing November 7. Police say the vehicle was stolen from a locked 24' trailer parked at the business. Described as a drag car, custom-built and only used for racing. It had no license plate and is not street legal. Description: 2- door, two-tone paint with yellow on bottom and purple top, "Hoosier" tires, oversized rear tire with aluminum rims and had numerous decals on the driver/passenger doors. Also stolen was the complainant's racing suit and helmet, brand name "Simpson," and described as being all black.

Real estate price fluctuations

A nationwide study conducted by Century 21 Canada has revealed that the p r i c e -p e r-s q u a r e -fo o t (PPSF) of downtown Toronto rose more than 10 percent in the last year and continues to top Ontario home prices, while prices rose and fell turbulently in GTA suburbs and other communities in the province. In 2016, members of the Niagara Regional Police Sexual Assault Unit entered into an investigation involving allegations of historical child sex offences in the city of St Catharines.

As a result of the investigation, on August 16, 2016 an arrest was made and a series of charges were laid.

Charged with 11 counts of sexual assault, nine counts of sexual interference, eight counts of invitation to sexual touching, and sexual exploitation, was 60-year-old St Catharines resident Jeffrey Cairns, who was held in custody and released the following day on a recognizance of bail before a Justice of the Peace. In October 2018 police were contacted by a new complainant which opened the door for further investigation. As a result of the new allegations and

agara Regional Police Service's Traffic Enforcement Unit was conducting mobile speed enforcement on Lundy's Lane near Kalar Road in Niagara Falls. At that time, police observed a 2014 Ford Mustang and a 2005 Subaru Legacy traveling west on Lundy's at a high rate. Police activated their mobile RADAR unit and measured the offending vehicles’ speeds at 118 km/h and 117 km/h in the posted 60 km/h zone. Both vehicles were subsequently stopped and each driver was charged with "Stunting-Excessive Speed" and "Speeding" Contrary to Section 172(1) and Section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. Both drivers received a 7-day licence suspension and their vehicles were seized for 7 days.

Cannabis producer holds info session Leviathan wants to be neighbourly before Foss Rd. construction starts

Pelham’s latest future cannabis production company hosted an information session for residents on Monday, November 5 at the community centre.

In a follow-up email interview, Leviathan Cannabis provided the the Voice with a Power Point Presentation made by CEO Martin Doane.

This presentation addressed the company’s overall mandate and a variety of issues including odour, light, location, parking, usage, water, waste, energy and employment.

It was stated in the presentation that the Leviathan greenhouse facility will be completely sealed with state-of-the-art “next generation” technology, setting the standard for cannabis operations and “good neighbour principles” in the region.

Regarding odour, the building will be a sealed greenhouse design. It will have activated charcoal filters and an atomized fog

mist neutralizer at all exhaust points, bipolar ionization for air purification within rooms with cannabis, and a camouflage landscaping design using lilac, rosemary and mint.

The company asserts that there is a three-step process to combat the odour. The first step is in-room odour reduction through bipolar ionization, second is in-duct odour reduction consisting of a high pressure odour neutralizer, and the final step being odour absorption at the point or exhaust from the building using activated carbon filters.

With the lighting, it was presented that about 85 percent of the greenhouse will be in sync with the natural sun rhythm.

A black-out system will be drawn no later than 8 PM daily. The supplemental light is all downcast LED, compared to omni-directional conventional lighting.

The proposed site is situated 1000 feet from the Foss Road public roadway.

The parking lot will accommodate up to 150 passenger vehicles and have adequate access and turn-around for the delivery vehicles, according to the plans shown on Monday.

It was presented that Leviathan will be operating at 84,000 square feet during the first phase of cultivation

on the 29.5 acre property.

Chief Communications Officer Jayne Beckwith said the company’s initial operations and current focus is growing and selling dry cannabis to other licensed producers.

With residents’ concern about the impact of how much water the site will use, Beckwith said the previous usage for cucumber cultivation was more invasive than for cannabis production. All greenhouse run-off, along

with the cooling and dehumidification moisture, will be captured and reused. Using a sealed design, said Beckwith, there is less evaporative water loss.

Leviathan plans to cultivate cannabis using organic soil, with no use of pesticides. Instead, beneficial predator insects will be used. All fertilizer run-off will be captured and filtered for re-use. In lieu of on-site composting, an industrial waste grinder will be used

to destroy production waste, in accordance with Health Canada guidelines.

Waste will be taken off premises by a professional waste management company in response to the concern voiced at the town hall meeting over smell that could arise from an outdoor composting operation.

A

CCORDING TO Dr. Marie-Claude Grégoire, a Canadian pediatrician, almost 8 million Canadians are afflicted, in varying degrees, with this phobia. Many are vaguely aware of their affliction and many will not freely admit to this condition. According to medical researchers, the root cause of this phobia may be linked to some type of traumatic experience as a very young child.

Trypanophobia is the formal medical term more commonly known as the fear of needles. The medical community suggest this fear can lead to such deficits as postponing blood tests, dodging dental work, and not donating blood. This fear can lead to alarming avoidance behaviors that are dangerous to not only the afflicted but also to those close to, or otherwise in contact with that person.

Of grievous concern is that those afflicted with this phobia may avoid the critically important flu vaccines.

Researchers report that 7% of adults admit this fear is the main reason they opt out of getting the flu shot.

These researchers also report that annual flu outbreaks in Canada in recent years have

resulted in upwards of 3,500 deaths. Sadly, many of these are children.

These annual bouts of flu overwhelm health systems across the country for weeks at a time. Lamentably, many of these casualties and catastrophic outcomes can be avoided.

Otherwise, there is no reasonable excuse to avoid being innoculated In spite of the severity of these annual flu epidemics, only about one third of Canadian adults got vaccinated in the 2016 – 2017 flu season. While it is true that this particular vaccine was not as effective as was hoped, it did nonetheless ameliorate some of the flu strains and their impacts.

On a personal note and unfortunately for me, although I was vaccinated, I was a victim of the H3N2 virus last year and hospitalized for almost a week. I wrote about

that episode in this newspaper following that dreadful experience. I desperately hope never to repeat such an occurrence and do not wish for anyone to undergo such a disconcerting illness. Especially since there are measures to avoid it.

My wife and I have just returned from being immunized with the current vaccine and I encourage all within earshot to do the same. You owe it to yourself, your loved ones, friends and neighbours to reduce the prospect of you becoming ill and spreading this dreadful virus to others. The medical experts are quite confident, in spite of last year’s experience, that the current vaccine will be more effective against the anticipated strains of the flu virus this year. If you are reluctant due to your fear of needles, talk to your doctor. Otherwise, there are no reasonable excuses to avoid being inoculated against this upcoming strain of the flu virus. Pay heed to the sage advice that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

My father’s brick —S/L E.A. “Bud” Ker, DFC—was located near one of the trees (since removed) in front of the old Fenwick post office. However the soil sank a number of times and the brick received a bit of damage.

OPINION COMMENTARY / OP-ED Pelham Town Councillors-Elect Incoming council should have had say in whether to sell Arena The Voice received the following statement from all incoming councillors and Mayor-Elect Marvin Junkin.

A

T THE PELHAM Town Council meeting on November 5, Pelham CAO Darren Ottaway advised council that the Haist Street arena had been sold. The sale of the arena was transacted while council was in “Lame Duck” status.

“Lame Duck” status was declared for the period of July 27 to October 22, when it was determined that less than three-quarters of the members of the outgoing council might return, depending on election results.

Existing council had made a decision prior to becoming “Lame Duck” to give sole authority to the CAO to execute any agreement of purchase or sale that had a value exceeding $50,000.

At the council meeting of Nov 5, it was asked of the CAO when the sale of the property would be completed, and the CAO responded that it would be closed by the end of December. It is unclear whether all conditions of the sale have been satisfied and in fact the

property will change ownership by the end of December, or if the offer is still conditional, whereby certain conditions must be satisfied by the end of December.

The incoming councillors and Mayor-Elect take exception to the fact that current council gave such authority to the CAO with the knowledge that the council may in fact become Lame Duck. The previous council did in fact engage the community as to the use of the land but retaining the arena property as parkland was never an option presented to the community.

The sale of the land has become a contentious issue in our community, and the incoming council should have had the opportunity to further engage the community about their desires prior to any final decisions being made with respect to the property. ♦ In addition, the following individual statements were received from four councillors-elect.

rush to dispose of it. What kind of deal is possibly in the works, and if there is some kind of a deal, who would stand to benefit in the long term?

With outgoing council in a Lame Duck position, I don't believe they should have the right to make a decision so large that it would affect the whole of the town.

Is there something to hide—possibly that the building isn't in as dire a condition as they say? Is there some need to get rid of it before the truth comes out?

I don't know what outgoing council is thinking,

but I don't believe it is appropriate to sell off such an asset at this time (or possibly any other time).

Memorials inspire us to protect our fragile democracy

Mystery building at St. Johns

N T H I S Remembrance Day just past, my thoughts turned once again to history and to a couple of personal events which I have experienced over the years.

Many years ago, probably too many for me to recall, I attended Memorial Public School in Hamilton. I don’t remember much about those days, but I do recall most vividly the school itself. As I recall, the name “Memorial” was given to the school as a tribute to the Canadians who fought and died in the First World War, the Great War, the “War To End All Wars,” as they said.

I can still see the central auditorium as it was then, an open space, rectangular, rising to a second story above. The details of the school’s architecture are fuzzy now, lost in the mists of time, but I do remember that second story as though I were sitting there today.

Around the top of the auditorium were the names of the battles of the Great War in which Canadians participated, usually with tremendous casualties. Passchendaele, Vimy, and Ypres come to mind, but there were others. I used to look up at these names, and fully aware of their significance, wonder to myself how such terrible battles could even take place. But they did then, and would again in the not too distant future.

Almost a hundred years after the end of that war, I visited those same battlefields of Flanders in Belgium and stood on the very

St Johns West, tucked into the Short Hills north of Fonthill, has been called a vanished village, and has been included in a book listing ghost towns of Ontario. Certainly, much of what was a bustling industrial community in the early 19th century has disappeared, leaving only tantalizing reminders of what had been.

One such remnant is a low stone building in a valley now administered by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority. The property was first developed in the 1790s

by John Darling of Connecticut, who established mills on the 12 Mile Creek. His grist mill was purchased by John Street around 1817.

Visitors to the site can view the now overgrown and drained millpond, a well-preserved mill building erected in the 1880s, and John Street’s frame house. But a few steps from the mill one comes to a low stone structure, until now labeled a pig sty or animal shelter.

ground where our soldiers fought and died.

In 1915, the Passchendaele was a quagmire, where approximately 4,000 Canadians lost their lives and 12,000 were wounded. It represents all that is the worst in war.

For me, it was a moving experience. A young Belgian who knew the area and the history of the war intimately, acted as our guide and drove us from place to place, stopping at many of the Allied cemeteries along the way. Tragically, there is no shortage of them: Canadian, British, ANZAC, American, and German: yes, the tragedy affected both sides.

We visited the memorial to John McCrae, who penned In Flanders Fields, in 20 minutes during the Second Battle of Ypres on May 3, 1915. More than 2000 Canadian troops died here, many of them the victims of a chlorine gas attack. I shall never be able to comprehend the horrors of those days in Flanders, but I tried to imagine what they were like as I gazed over the landscape.

In 1985-86 our family spent a year abroad in Freiburg, Germany, where I served as Resident Director of the Trent-Brock-Freiburg Year Abroad program.

Freiburg lies in the southwest corner of Germany, just north of the Swiss border and east of France. Inevitably I was drawn to the Alsace, a few kilometres away, where French and German forces faced each other in not just one, but two world wars.

There were still remnants of the Maginot Line, which we visited. But most interesting was an excursion we took to the Hartmannswillerkopf (Fr. Le Vieil Armand) in Alsace. This rugged piece of landscape stands about 1,000 metres above sea level, looking over the Rhine Valley. In 1915 it was the site of several bloody battles in World War I. Some 30,000 soldiers, most of them French, perished here in some of the most senseless skirmishes of the war.

Today it is still possible to walk through the trenches in which French and Germans fought and died. I often wonder if they really knew why they were there.

The trenches with their barbed wire are well preserved, since the site is now a French national monument. Our son and I walked amongst the rows of crosses in the cemetery there.

He was visibly moved as we read the names on the rows of crosses. He was 16 at the time and the graves beneath his feet held the remains of young men only two or three years older than he was. This was an experience he has not forgotten.

The futility of war and the quest for human freedom and dignity was not lost on us. Nor was the sacrifice of our men and women who gave their lives that we might enjoy the riches of Canada. As I reflect on our situation today, I am reminded that democracy is a fragile thing, even today—no, especially today. We cannot afford to be complacent. ♦

partly below, with a very low door, and about five steps descending to the floor. The walls are stone set in mortar. Low windows in the front and side walls would have provided light and ventilation. At the rear once flowed the “tail race” of the mill.

Knowing the facts, one can hardly resist conjecturing the long- ago usage of the building. The tail race is an important clue.

Was this really a truly substantial pig sty, or was it perhaps John Darling’s abattoir?

Then again, could it be the foundation level of the original mill? Or maybe Darling’s distillery?

A mystery inviting speculation from local history detectives.

The St Johns Centre property is currently being used for educational purposes by the Niagara Catholic District School Board. It is not available for visits on weekdays during school hours. The NPCA may provide information regarding public access.

How about a candid wait message?

I recently spent a frustrating afternoon on the phone with my least favorite utility.

An honest message would have gone something like this: “We are experiencing our usual, unusually high call volume. Please stay on the line. Your call could be of interest to us. The first available representative will be with you within the foreseeable future—after we have dealt with the usual staggering number of frustrated customers already waiting on line.”

Voicemail jail runaround I have spent the last 45 minutes listening to the Town of Pelham deny public information as it relates to the community centre. I was also told the Town is unaware of Meridian Community Centre public events.

By Googling “Meridian Centre,” I continuously find the Town of Pelham’s phone number. Having spoken with Town Clerk Nancy Bozzato twice, and after speaking to three other staff, Nancy finally offered me another extension. Greeted with “leave a message” does not bode well for prospective centre customers.

It is inefficient that the Meridian Centre doesn't develop a proper website with direct phone numbers to speak with knowledgeable staff. It does not speak well to the business plan to market our new centre.

Crossley's new head settles in

Janice Sergeant has been an educator for the past 18 years with the District School Board of Niagara, the past three years as principal.

This year, Sergeant joins the E. L. Crossley community, arriving from Welland’s Eastdale Secondary School, where she was principal for two years.

Eastdale is where she initially started her education career as a teacher in 2002.

After some time as a teacher, Sergeant moved forward and became Vice-Principal at a number of schools throughout the Niagara area, including Stamford Collegiate in Niagara Falls, Thorold Secondary School, Sir Winston Churchill in St. Catharines, and Beamsville Secondary School.

For Sergeant these schools encompassed a variety of educational settings that offered “Lots of different experiences leading to E. L. Crossley.”

Her main teaching focus is English and History, however throughout her career she taught Social Sciences, was a Special Education Resource Teacher, and a Student Success Teacher.

learning model,” she said.

For Sergeant in all of those roles, it’s about supporting the students in a variety of ways.

“It’s maximizing their potential with the understanding that everyone starts in different places and get to them as far as we can together.”

Sergeant describers her leadership skills as being involved, positive and optimistic.

“I enjoy working with people and in education you build relationships with students, families, community and amongst staff,” she said. “The better relationships you can build, the better success you have to grow.”

She is also very involved in a collaborative, co-teaching approach. Sergeant collaborates with with teachers and instructional coaches from the school board to work with students in class to assess their needs. With this, they plan and develop programming to help meet their needs.

“It comes down to looking at the individual learner,” she said. “When you know your learner, you are going to do a great job to using the skills and strategies to meet their learning styles and needs.”

Staff professional development is based on a cross-curricular literacy program, supporting literacy skills in every class.

“Literacy is the foundation to all learning.”

Upon arrival, Sergeant immediately saw that E. L. Crossley is a “big busy place where great things have been happening.”

With 800 students, it is a school offering a variety of programs and extracurricular activities for students

in academics, arts, athletics, science, and a Specialized School to Community Program.

One unique program Sergeant highlighted was the Link Crew, a group of 50 Grade 11 and 12 students that mentor Grade 9 students.

“It is a strategically-structured program designed to support their transition into secondary school and to create strong peer relationships. It’s creating a culture of caring” She said the Crew organized team-building before school started to get to know the group leaders, and did activities so the kids felt comfortable with the school.

After the first day of school, the Link leaders personally phoned the students to ask how their first day went, and have involved them in activities since then Sergeant is also looking forward to the upgrade of the school’s outdoor field from grass to turf that will accommodate soccer, lacrosse, outdoor volleyball, and new running track.

A new addition to the school’s activities is the cheer squad, which was able to perform at the school’s first-ever pep rally, organized by the School Student Council during Spirit Week.

“The hallways were coloured with gold and purple.

When the squad came out to make their first performance, the kids went crazy, it was really great.”

“Every school has its own unique flavour, and here there’s always something happening. It’s a big school physically and population-wise. It’s a great size, it’s wonderful.”

Sergeant said that her first year as principal will be learning about the school, including the programs,

students, strengths, and needs.

“It’s really important to build on strengths and we are very lucky this school has a strong, committed staff that cares about the kids,” she said. “I have been at awe about everything that is happening. So, I don’t have any plans for change at the moment.”

“You really feel the vibe in the school it is a positive pulse,” Sergeant said.

“It comes down to how the staff are supporting the students and in turn, how the students support one another.”

Sergeant’s mother is a retired teacher, and her sister is also secondary school teacher. She was going to work towards being an accountant, but, “that job wasn’t nearly social enough for me.”

During university, she took a course in Canadian history and “fell in love with it.” From there, Sergeant went to teacher’s college and did her placements.

“When making the decision, I thought back to my school experience and loved the art of storytelling,” she said. “As a teacher, you get to engage and connect with people. It was at that point where teaching is where I wanted to be.”

“I love working with kids.”

Sergeant said she believes she came in at a great time to follow along her journey as an educator and teacher.

“I like seeing kids becoming the best versions and I enjoy guiding them towards doing that.”

Crossley student nabs Ruby Award

Just because we live in an area of privilege, doesn't mean there aren't those kids who need it

Tessa Piccolo honoured for school’s breakfast program start-up

The community of Pelham has another gem added to its collection of the Welland-Pelham Chamber of Commerce Ruby Award recipient list.

Tessa Piccolo, a Grade 12 student at E. L. Crossley Secondary School, was recently named the Youth Citizen of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce’s yearly gala. Piccolo received the community honour for her volunteer and leadership initiatives.

A major school initiative Piccolo undertook was establishing a daily breakfast program for E. L. Crossley students.

After doing some research, Piccolo said that E. L. Crossley was one of the few schools in the area that didn’t have a breakfast program and for her this was “wrong.”

“I feel honoured,” Piccolo said. “It is a nice feeling when someone thinks that you’re deserving of an award.”

For her, the award is a “definite reassurance” that

she is making a positive impact on the community.

“I really wasn’t expecting it. It is difficult for me to compare my accomplishments to anyone else’s because I believe that no one’s achievements are ever better than someone else’s, they are simply different.”

“Looking at the other amazing nominees, it could have been any of us,” Piccolo said. “It was definitely an exciting moment.”

She began the process of establishing the program in August 2016, when starting Grade 10.

“It took about four months to organize, and the principal, at the time, Mrs. Simpson, was supportive of the idea.”

Funding was received at the beginning of the school year to help launch the program officially in early November. Although E. L. Crossley applied after the deadline, Niagara Nutrition Partners was still able to provide assistance to get the program started.

This is an umbrella program of Community Care, established in 1998, that promotes the connection between healthy food choices and improved

learning through the provision of breakfast, lunch and snacks at school or community-based programs.

“Just because we live in an area of privilege, doesn’t mean that there aren’t those kids who need it,” Piccolo said. “It’s also not just for kids in need, but also those who come early from long bus rides from Wainfleet and West Lincoln and attend team practic-

Another reason Piccolo started the program was so that the students were not at a “disadvantage” by not having a nutritious breakfast before they started the school day.

In addition, “It was already a working cucumber farm and cannabis is also an agricultural product. Plus, the property is secluded as the perimeters are bordered by railway tracks, trees and ponds.”

Although Leviathan is not yet licensed, Beckwith said the firm did receive

its “confirmation of readiness” from Health Canada in March and expects to be licensed for cultivation in the second quarter of 2019.

Even though cannabis production is now legal nationwide, the industry will have its challenges Beckwith said.

“Many people continue to view cannabis as a negative, illicit enterprise but

there are huge benefits to cannabis, particularly the medicinal therapies and treatments. One of the industry’s main challenges is to educate the public.”

About 100 people attended the Leviathan Cannabis informative session and said the meeting was “informative” for both attendees and the company representatives.

Beckwith said the input session resulted in “productive conversation” and “healthy dialogue surrounding issues and concerns.” She also added that Leviathan will continue to host community updates.

“One person alone can’t make a difference, it must be a team,” said Piccolo.

Piccolo says the program is well received and “from talking to students [in general] it’s very appreciated.”

He added, “They seem like nice people,” but Ireland still has reservations due to another major cultivation facility still having consistent odour control issues.

Deer harvest begins

BY VOICE STAFF The First Nation Deer Harvest began on the weekend of November 3 and 4, the first of three provincial Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks-sanctioned hunts in November.

The crisp, cool and damp weather didn’t diminish the spirit of the hunt’s supporters, nor did the handful of protesters also on site.

Vehicles passed by, honking for both harvest supporters and non-supporters. For the supporting honks, traditional Aboriginal calls of “thank you” were returned.

A community fire kept the participants warm as they engaged in conversation.

For the past three years, the event has transformed into an opportunity for the Haudenosaunee Confederacy to organize educational workshops on a variety of topics, including ones that answer basic questions about the treaty agreement that permits the hunt, as well as historical facts and issues relating to Indigenous people overall.

For Celeste Smith, co-founder of the Supporters of Haudenosaunee Right to Hunt, these workshops aim to establish a foundation between the Indigenous and their “settler-allies” based upon peace, friendship and respect. This was the mandate of the Two Row Wampum Belt established in 1745 between the Dutch and Haudenosaunee community.

Smith says the harvest aligns itself as closely as possible with traditional methods, including only using archery equipment for hunting. All deer harvested on the first day of the hunt are donated to the Haudenosaunee community’s mid-

winter ceremony.

She also highlighted that the harvest is an important time to teach youth participants the importance of maintaining native culture and values, patience, respect, and life lessons.

During the hunt itself, hunters can only harvest deer in designated, roped-off areas, and are provided with proper training.

“There are safety measures put into place and it’s very difficult to shoot a deer as the arrows don’t go very far,” Smith said.

Hunters are only able to harvest deer in the southern portion of the park, which has the fewest trails.

Park staff monitor access points to make the public aware that the park is closed for public safety.

The harvest is in respect to Aboriginal and treaty rights, as recognized and affirmed under the Constitution Act, 1982, and is committed to meeting the province's constitutional and other obligations regarding First Nation and Metis people.

As in the past, members of the Animal Alliance of Canada were on site, protesting the event. Various signs stating “Ministry of No Respect,” “Shame,” “Stand Behind the Deer,” “Wounded and Left to Suffer 2017,” and “Ministry of Lies” were displayed as the protesters stood alongside Pelham Road.

The group makes its presence known at 4:30 AM when the hunters begin arriving and again 4:30 PM when they begin leaving.

On the opposite side of the entrance to the park were the deer harvest supporters, and an interactive dialogue session on Animal Liberation and Indigenous Justice.

The workshop discussed the perspectives of animal rights activists who support the Haudenosaunee right to hunt, and how this perspective fits with the animal rights movement more generally.

Dael Horhota of Hamilton, Rose McCormick of Niagara, Stephanie Piovesan of Calgary, and Taylor Telford of St. Catharines were the dialogue leaders.

The topics discussed were species hierarchy, animal culture as an argument for granting animal rights, environmental racism, and access to food and the connection between human and non-human animal oppressions, with an underlying

message of how capitalism and colonialism “ruin the party.”

Horhota said that she was in support of the hunt as the Indigenous have a different relationship with animals. “Because of that, their relationship should be respected instead of us imposing a belief based on moral context.”

Piovesan says that animal and human oppression are similar in the sense that certain types of people and animals are valued at different levels in a hierarchy concept.

“Certain animals such as pets, majestic animals, and dolphins are put higher than other animals, such as chickens cows and pigs,” she said. “That’s the type of hierarchy being put into place by western culture.”

Telford said when people protest a treaty right or crucial cultural activity, in this case the deer harvest,

they are contributing to colonialism, the same system that oppresses animals.

She also says that it’s important for people to understand that every living thing is part of a symbiotic system and, “Nobody is smarter than Mother Nature. [The protesters] over there don’t understand this concept.”

Because of the harmonious relationship between the Aboriginals and the animals, McCormick said it was actually “more vegan to support the hunt as the relationship is more in line with animal liberations.”

Steve and Fred, who only wanted to be identified by their first names, said they supported the hunt and in turn supported Indigenous people.

Steve said rights for treaty and religious ceremonies are things he supports, as Aboriginals were historically oppressed by the settlers.

“Why it is opposed, it’s unfortunate, but everyone has a right to their opinion.”

Fred keeps the “community fires” during the interactive dialogue sessions as part of his recovery program. For him, he says keeping the fires connects him with Mother Earth as he heals from post-traumatic stress and addiction issues.

Celeste Smith said, “The harvest shows respect to the indigenous people after many years of repression. They deserve this and as much respect as we can give them.”

The deer harvest will continue this weekend, November 17 and 18, and finish November 29 and 30.

The hunts will also feature onsite educational sessions on topics including “Canadian Mining and Indigenous Rights,” “Faith Communities Consider Reconciliation,” “Be the Change! Anti-Racism and Decolonization as Best Practices,” discussion of the treaties, and “The Clothing of our Grandmothers.”

Beavering away toward top award A local Beaver is reaching for the stars to support the Annual Christmas Hamper Campaign for Pelham Cares.

Harry Seppala, 7, is a third-year White Tail Beaver with the 3rd Fonthill Scout Group, who is striving to reach the division’s high honour, the North Star Beaver Award.

This award is achieved by completing five Outdoor Adventure Skill Stages in any combination, five community services hours in Scouting or non-Scouting activities, and a meaningful community service project.

“Determined” to achieve the award, with his father, David, helping by suggesting some community ideas, Seppala decided his meaningful project would be to raise money for the Pelham Cares Christmas Hamper Campaign.

He began his fundraising efforts on Thanksgiving weekend, and with contributions from family, a Go Fund Me campaign, and cashing in Halloween candy at a local dentist’s office, Seppala has accelerated towards his goal.

“I wanted to do five hampers, but we are going to keep going until the end of November, so that way families in Pelham can have Christmas dinner just like us,” he said.

Once the funds are collected, Seppala will shop with his mother, Julie, to gather the turkey, potatoes, gravy and canned vegetables needed for the hamper, and will deliver them in mid-December in time for their Christmas distribution.

Julie said it’s been a fun project to help her son with, and he is an active member within the Scouts organization. Seppala not only participates in club-organized community events such as Apple Days, but also assists with local community initiatives through donations and time.

He joined the Beavers division of the Scouts when he was five. His father has been a Scout

The Seppala family loves the outdoors, especially camping, hiking and backcountry paddling. Seppala enjoys hockey during the winter and swimming in the summer.

Seppala says he enjoys the club’s overnight camping adventures and special outings. During the weekly meetings, he likes the building projects, which in the past have included a flashlight, Lego structures and building and planting flower boxes for Mother’s Day. Julie says they are proud of Harry, as it was “his desire” to work towards this achievement.

While he does have two more badges to obtain, he has already surpassed his volunteer hours, which the Beavers accumulate quickly without even realizing it says Julie.

With the Christmas season quickly approaching, Pelham Cares is beginning to organize its 28th Annual Pelham Community Food Drive.

This year, the food drive will take place on Saturday, December 1, as part of the Christmas in Pelham weekend events.

Pelham’s suburban residents are asked to place non-perishable food on their porch, by 9 AM. Volunteers will fan out from both the Fenwick and Fonthill Lions Halls, starting at about 9, to pick up the donations.

Pelham Cares, in partnership with the Fonthill & District Kinsmen Club, Fonthill Lions Club and Fenwick Lions Club, co-ordinates the event to fill its shelves and enable the organization to provide monthly food and personal care hampers during the upcoming months.

This initiative cushions the impact of rising housing, utility and food expenses experienced by families within the community.

Client Services Coordinator Lori Grande said the most-needed items are canned fruits, stew and chili, crackers, cookies,

nut-free granola bars, pudding mixes, instant coffee, gluten-free items such as oatmeal and Rice Krispies, a variety of personal care items such as shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste and

ONG BEFORE RADIO, TV or the digital age arrived, residents of Pelham spent their leisure time in a variety of ways. Baseball, cricket and shinney could all be played with simple stick, ball or chunk of ice. Sleigh rides, skating and bobsledding were fun activities in winter.

Dalton’s Hall (originally located on the second floor of 4 Highway 20) was a popular place to stage plays and concerts and drew neighbours from far and wide.

In 1861, Fonthill boasted a brass band, which later became the band of the 44th Battalion. The Fonthill Fife and Drum Band also formed and provided music for Or-

Band concerts were held on Saturday nights in the summer in the bandshell that was located in front of the Temperance Hotel (near the intersection of Highway 20 and Pelham Street).

In the early 1900s, the Ridgeville Band took centre stage on Saturday nights and concerts became wildly popular in Ridgeville.

Crowds arrived on foot, by

horse and buggy and later by car to hear the full trumpets, high-pitched clarinets, booming horns and echoing drums.

Band members dressed in formal uniforms performed on a bandstand and their music could be heard across the countryside. The band’s first leader was George Lymburner of Fonthill. By 1907, the band membership exceeded 12 members when

girls were allowed to join.

Concerts continued into the early 1930’s, until sadly the Depression made it financially too difficult to fund the band.

Instruments were packed away and the wonderful Sousa marches became a memory...until now.

This Saturday, November 17, the Pelham Historical Society will be hosting an afternoon of “Music and

Along with a partnership with Niagara Nutrition Partners, Piccolo says that E. L. Crossley has received great

support from the community, including DeVries Fruit Farm, which provides apples, Sobeys, and Food Basics. This year the program also received a boost from the President’s Choice Children’s Charity grant.

Undertaking an initiative such the school’s breakfast program taught Piccolo that perseverance is what drives success. Although it began with just a handful of students using the program, Piccolo says “not giving up” is what makes it the success it is today, with about 70 stu-

Piccolo is also the Prime Minister of the school’s Student Council, President of the Interact/We Club, a member of the Eco Club, a member of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council, and the Youth Representative for the Pelham Seniors Advisory Committee.

With her role in the Eco Club, Piccolo established the School’s Veg Fest, a week in which students learn about eating properly in a sustainable, environmentally way that’s fun and interactive.

Robert Young, President of the PHS, will discuss how music was used as entertainment in 19th century Ontario, as well as the early decades of the 20th century.

Robert, the great-grandson of George Lymburner and an accomplished musician himself, will also be entertaining visitors will some of the hits of the day, such as “Everybody Works But Father,” and the “Civil Service Gallop’.”

When Piccolo isn’t busy with school and community initiatives she enjoys playing in the marching and concert bands, photography, reading and writing. Her sport of choice is curling.

Piccolo’s future potential goals include working with causes at the international level in some capacity. Next year, her journey will begin at McGill University, where she will study international development.

Fatal collision in Welland

Last Tuesday, November 6, at approxi-

mately 7:30 PM, the Niagara Regional Police Service, the Niagara Emergency Medical Services and Welland Fire Services responded to a report of a single motor vehicle collision on Thorold Road near Centennial Drive in Welland.

Police say that initial investigation revealed that a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt was being driven eastbound on Thorold Road by a 71-year-old Welland male. This driver lost control of his vehicle, crossed the westbound lane of traffic and struck a large tree on the north side of Thorold

Road.

Another motorist flagged down a passing paramedic supervisor who quickly attended to the single occupant.

The driver was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. This collision remains under investigation by the Coroner's Office and Detectives of the Niagara Regional Police Services Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at (905) 688-4111, extension 5500.

T WA S A N OV ERC A ST, BR ISK DAY on Sunday as some 500 gathered at the Cenotaph at Veteran’s Park, Canadian Royal Legion Fonthill, to pay their respect and remember the thousands of servicemen and women who served and continue to serve Canada during times of conflict and peace.

Messages were offered by federal, provincial and local levels of government.

This year’s ceremony was a milestone year as Legions across Canada commemorated the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War I. With this commemoration, five churches in the Pelham area rang their bells 100 times. The ringing of the bells echoed the 1918 new that the war had been brought to an end.

Representatives from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613, all levels of government, Niagara Regional Police, Niagara Emergency Services, local services clubs, businesses, schools, veterans and cadets from the Welland-Lincoln Regiment placed wreaths around the Cenotaph in honour of the fallen.

Legion Chaplain John Cathcart relayed messages and prayers. Ted Johnstone was the ceremonial bag piper, while E. L. Crossley student Harmon Narbonne was the ceremonial trumpeter. A revered friend of the Royal Canadian Legion, Peter Jackson, 97, led the crowd in singing Oh, Canada, and God Save the Queen.

Royal Canadian Legion Member and First Special Services Forces Veteran Jim Summersides recited the Act of Remembrance. Special wreaths were placed at the cenotaph in honour of Veterans Leslie Toth and Sean McClintock.

BY VOICE STAFF Monday, November 5 saw the farewell of Pelham’s outgoing Town council.

About 15 onlookers were in the gallery, including former Member of Parliament for Niagara Centre Malcolm Allen, two councillors-elect, and members of the public.

The outgoing council and Mayor Dave Augustyn shared a moment of reflection on what they asserted were their accomplishments over the past term, and offered “thank yous” to the community.

Councillor Catherine King began the comments by saying that not running for a third term was a decision that wasn’t easily made.

“While we didn’t always agree in our decisions, we worked as a team to grow this town and provide amenities for all residents, new and long-standing residents,” she said. “We earmarked the town and by doing so were honoured with many grants and awards there is every reason to celebrate our accomplishments.”

Councillor John Durley joked, “I’m leaving politics for health reasons, people got sick of me,” which drew a laugh from the room.

“I’ve always had the best interest of our community in mind,” said Durley, “and my focus was building on a better community for the future generations our Pelham.”

To the incoming councillors he said there’s a “time to campaign” and a “time to govern.”

“The easy part, the campaign, has ended, the difficult part, the governing, is just about to begin,” he said.

“You need to know and appreciate the difference.”

Councillor Gary Accursi said council’s achievements were for the “betterment” of the community, despite the disagreements, “personal attacks and false allegations.”

“Eight years ago, this council established a vision encompassing a vibrant, creative and caring community in Niagara. At the time, this was a bold statement to make” Over the years, Accursi said council made “tough decisions” to turn this vision into a reality.

Councillor Jim Lane extended appreciation towards Town staff and to the fellow council members he has served with over the past three partial terms in which he was appointed to council to fill a Ward 1 vacancy.

“No council can be successful without the support of a strong staff and knowledgeable senior management team,” Lane said.

“Pelham is fortunate to have such a team.”

Councillor Richard Rybiak said that when he “rode in on my silver horse expecting to make a change” to how he thought public service should work, he quickly realized that people get things done in a way that “could be the envy of a lot of private businesses.”

“It wasn’t about the implementation of ideology or presenting ideas,” he said.

“It was about solving problems and getting the work done.”

Councillor Peter Papp rounded out the farewell comments.

During his time as councilor, he said he enjoyed working with not only Town staff and fellow councillors, but also with members of the community’s service clubs and volunteers.

“What they contribute is enormous in this community and they can’t be overlooked.”

For the incoming council, Papp said he would like them to work with decency and respect, while acknowledging that people may disagree with their opinions.

“Do not forget who you who put you there, just like we have not forgotten.”

Mayor Dave Augustyn extended an emotional thanks to his family for supporting

him during his time as mayor, saying that public service is “hard sometimes.”

Augustyn extended best wishes to the new council-elect.

“There’s a huge euphoria when you’re elected to council and rightly so,” he said. “When you come with your own strengths and vision for a community, one hopes that you can come together as a council and work with our staff and members of the community in order to continue to move the community forward.”

2018 Pelham Summerfest report

Chair of the Pelham Summerfest Committee John Wink presented Town council with a final report of this year’s event.

Pelham Summerfest’s eighth annual event took place July 19 to 22. Wink said that despite heavy rains that fell overnight Saturday and through Sunday morning, forcing a cancellation of all activities on Sunday, the event “was once again a major success and a tribute to our town.”

The attendance over three days was asserted to be 38,950 and of that, 43.6 percent came from Pelham, 46 percent visited from the outlying Niagara area, and 10.4 percent were visitors outside the Niagara Region.

The returning visitor rate was at 70.5 percent, with new visitors at 29.5 percent. Wink said even though the Sunday activities were cancelled, Saturday’s attendance increased over previous years.

The event sponsorship contribution totaled $43,600, with $15,000 contributed by the Town. Also additional in-kind donations totaled $19,220. Over the eight years, Wink—who is also a Ward 2 councillor-elect—asserted that the Summerfest Committee has returned $57,567 back to the community. Update: Conditional Sale of Haist Street Arena

Pelham Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Darren Ottaway reported to council that before the so-called “Lame Duck” period began during the election campaign, when it was clear that a majority of council was not running for re-election, resulting in curbs on their authority, the Haist Street Arena property was already designated as “surplus” land. With council’s authority limited, it fell under law to Town Clerk Nancy Bozzato and Ottaway to negotiate with prospective buyers.

Ottaway reported that a conditional offer has been placed on the property and said he “hopes” the deal will be closed by year-end.

Request for Kinsmen Home Show date change

Pelham council approved, in principle, the Kinsmen Club of Fonthill’s request to move its annual Home Show from the third weekend in April to the first weekend starting in 2019.

In a letter to council dated July 18, it states “Our club has determined a significant need to move our event to an earlier weekend in April as we are now in competition from other home shows [that weekend] in neighbouring Niagara communities in late April.”

The letter continued to say that the date conflicts with local seasonal businesses like landscapers, as it runs late into start-up season and are encouraging the club to seek alternate date. It also stated that show numbers over the past five years are trending neutral or have slightly decreased. “An effective and positive change is needed.” Town Treasurer Teresa Quinlin reported that schedules for three major user groups would be affected by the date change, especially if they face a play-off situation.

There are two options— the ice would have to be removed from the Duliban Arena, or covered, either of which would cost an additional $4,000. There is potential for this cost to be covered through a 2019 municipal grant.

Augustyn said the incoming council would be making the decision as it may or not be a budget item.

Over the past 23 years, the Kinsmen Home Show has cumulatively raised and donated over $380,000 to Pelham and surrounds.

“Idea Jamming” for proposed parks

Council was informed that Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds have been awarded the contract to develop Lookout and Weiland Heights neighbourhood parks, and will host a so-called “Idea Jamming Session” on Saturday, November 17 from 1 to 4 PM. In a Town report to council by Director of Recreation, Culture and Wellness Vickie vanRavenswaay, “idea jamming” is described as an engaging process with residents. The design company is setting up a heated tent on site in Lookout Park during the session. Large maps of both sites will be available for the residents to view. In addition, the design team will walk with residents to Weiland Heights Park if necessary during this time.

The project timeline projects completion of consultation and design of both parks by the end of December. By the end of February, the Weiland Heights Park components are expected to be completely built. By the end of April, the park will be completely assembled, with a May grand opening.

The Lookout Park project will begin in July with the production the park components, August and September being installation and an anticipated October grand opening.

Town finances update

It was presented by Treasurer Quinlin that the 2018 budget appears to be “on target” for both overall revenues and expenditures.

The report stated the Town is experiencing higher utility costs for the Meridian Community Centre than originally budgeted. The expected impact of increased utility costs is approximately $200,000 over budget, however, it’s unknown whether there will be cost savings in other expenditures to offset the increase.

Accursi questioned how the original hydro costs were calculated, as the original number was only around $147,000.

Ottaway responded by saying the projected costs were based on bringing the centre online with two rinks to be frozen at the same time. It is undetermined how much of the overage included start up and operating expenses because of the time of year.

He added another unknown factor is what will happen when the ice is removed and what the impact will be on the operating costs at that point.

“In essence, what we really need is a complete year of operation in order to get the actual expenses,” Ottaway asserted.

“Then we’ll have to reflect those changes if there are changes in the operating budget.” Ottaway did agree with Accursi’s suggestion to consult with Hydro One to inspect the meters and ensure they are working properly, especially since there have been issues with the equipment and to determine whether there was an impact on consumption.

Accursi added the report would be beneficial information for the incoming council.

The September monthly financial report was presented to council for information and reflects the Town’s revenue and expenditure activity for the nine-month period ending September 30.

The report also stated that some provincial grants are uncertain at this time due to potential changes in government priorities and the amount of supplemental tax revenue to be received is uncertain depending on the timing of MPAC assessments.

SAYING BOO TO LITTER Around Halloween, intermediate students from St. Ann’s School in Fenwick set out to clean their section of tarmac under the Pelham’s Adopt-a-Road program.

ANNUAL CRAFT SHOW DELIGHTS The Fonthill and District Kinsmen Club held its Annual Craft Show recently at Centennial High School in Welland. Some 70 vendors participated, offering browsers a variety of items including greeting cards, knitted and sewn items, jewellery, wooden home décor, unique art pieces, baked goods and seasonal items for Halloween, fall and Christmas. The Kinnettes held a Penny Sale. This year’s door proceeds are supporting the Special Olympics, Pathstones Mental Health and the Children’s Safety Village. Table sale, booth rental and penny sale proceeds will be used to support a variety of community organizations within Pelham and throughout Niagara year-round. SPARKY MAKES NEW PALS The Pelham Fire Department snuffed out 2018 Fire Prevention Week with a barbeque and educational display at the Fonthill Shopping Plaza parking lot last month. It was an opportunity for some 100 visitors to engage with firefighters, enjoy a hot dog in support of Pelham Cares, receive valuable educational information on fire prevention, learn about planning escape routes, and what to do in case a fire does break out. Children received fire chief hats and activity packages.

The fire services lift truck was also on display, and Sparky was on hand to help educate kids about fire safety. Dakota, Chance and Harley McDonnell-Lye visit with Sparky.

Her clock had always fascinated me. Its face, long aged into tiny, capillary-like cracks, was set inside a circular rosewood frame. It was mounted high on her living room wall, with two weights—one to move the hands, the other to drive the chimes—each attached to a chain that extended almost to the floor. It had a long pendulum that swung back and forth in a hypnotic, scythe-like motion, to produce the comforting tick-tock that pervaded her apartment. A little door on the side opened to reveal the dozen brass cogwheels of varying sizes, all connected and working in synch.

Gran brought her clock over from Scotland when she moved to Canada, and I remember asking her then how old it was. She didn’t know, she said, because it didn’t have a date or a maker’s name. But as a child she remembered being mesmerized by the movement of the pendulum; and her own grandmother once told her how, when she was little, she heard this same clock chime in the night from her upstairs bedroom.

That took it all the way back to the Ark as far as I was concerned.

It would be mine one day, she said, as long as I didn’t make it go backwards.

I don’t think I appreciated the clock’s significance when I was a child. In the 1950s there was nothing special about keeping something that still worked. Sure, it had been around forever, but so had everything else. Not much got thrown out back then, as I remember.

People hung onto things if they worked and fixed them when they didn’t. Even when the “next thing” came along most waited until “this thing” expired before replacing it.

And, really, there weren’t a lot of “next things” coming down the pipeline in those days. Technology in the ‘50s was more of a pipe dream—fanciful inventions like flying cars and hovercraft footwear. Actual new stuff took years to happen. The rotary phone hung around for decades before

The Voice of Pelham, November 14 2018 voice-messaging and push-button dials came along. Even after automatic transmissions and colour televisions were introduced, my parents kept their manual-shift Ford and black-and-white Philco TV until they died of natural causes—the machines, I mean.

But a silent revolution was happening under the radar. The bar code, solar cell, optic fiber, computer hard disk, modem, microchip and integrated circuit were all invented in the ‘50s. We were oblivious at the time to these technologies that would change how we lived.

And so we fast-forward to the present day, and a world stuck in fast-forward itself.

My gran passed away in the interval, and left me her clock as she promised. I’m older now than she was when she cautioned me about turning back the hands of time.

I’ve taken good care of it, getting it cleaned and serviced several times during that period. So I thought.

A year ago it started behaving erratically, and I was advised to find a proper clockmaker to put it right again. Skilled clockmakers are as rare as roof thatchers now, but I managed to locate one in St Catharines.

Ron was elderly and eccentric, and reminded me of old Gepetto from the Pinocchio movie. He actually resembled the Disney character, with his shock of thick white hair and mustache, square spectacles and furrowed brow. His basement workshop echoed with the ticking of 50 antique clocks that sounded like pebbles dropping down a deep well.

I felt I’d come to the right place, until he said it would cost fifteen hundred bucks to fix my clock.

Yikes.

I’d just read that school boards in Britain want to remove the analog clocks from their classrooms because students couldn’t read them. Kids panic during exams because they don’t know how much time they have left.

So why was I even thinking about spending more than I could afford to keep Gran’s clock going?

I felt better when I read that Big Ben’s been taken out of service for four years so it can be restored— at a cost of £62 million pounds.

It’s funny to think when Big Ben

is finally up and running again there’ll be a whole new generation of school kids who won’t know how to tell time from it.

And then I thought, does it matter how we tell time anyway? Who reads a sundial anymore?

It’s the times that change.

Most kids these days haven’t heard a clock that ticks, nor a dial tone either; but their phones have a hundred apps that give them the time along with a hundred ways to spend it.

The cost of fixing my gran’s clock could buy the services of Alexa, or Siri, and make me master of the universe in my smart home.

Why throw money at a device that did nothing but tell time—something it’s been doing pretty well since the beginning of it?

And then it hit me. The question was also the answer. Gran’s clock is timeless. All these other marvels aren’t.

Our new devices will always be replaced by newer ones, just as they replaced older ones. Innovation and obsolescence are themselves part of the tick-tock rhythm of our lives. In and out they come and go, all things passing through an ever-revolving turnstile of change: standard transmission, rotary dials, phone booths, videotapes, CDs and DVDs, fax machines, button technology, touchscreen and voice recognition.

We miss the familiar when it goes, but if nothing hangs around long enough even to become familiar, what’s to miss?

We re-invent ourselves, de-clutter and shed the past, give ourselves a makeover and take the fast lane into the future.

We don’t even take time to ask why we’re in such a hurry.

What if we get to the future too quickly and find that it’s already behind us?

“Forever can last a second,” said the White Rabbit, who was always in a hurry to be somewhere else.

Gran’s clock was making me feel nostalgic, not for the past but for what’s to come. I was already beginning to miss it.

Sometimes I think we all got here too quickly.

In the end the repair bill for my clock cost more than my first car, and even then Gepetto told me it would run a little fast.

Timeless as the sun, Big Ben. The times we live in, I thought, but I was delighted to have it back up and running.

The slight inaccuracy wasn’t an issue because old clocks never kept perfect time. The earliest ones— those mounted in church towers— were only as precise as they had to be in announcing prayer times or summoning workers from the field at dinner.

Our eternal summons was in poet John Donne’s mind when he wrote ask not for whom the bell tolls—and, yes, we have an app for that as well now.

so you can get your life in order, the ad says—settle your debts, junk the stuff your children will never use, update your will, tidy your room, write your last blog, then pour yourself a stiff one and wait for the countdown, like New Year’s.

I’ll give that one a miss. Sometimes it’s better not to know the time.

Still, I’m happy not to be the one who lets go of an heirloom that has timed the lives of my ancestors and myself from birth. If the clock outlives me, which is likely now, it’ll go to my daughter, and she’ll look after it to the last syllable of her recorded time.

I sometimes imagine, what if Gran’s clock were to keep going till the crack of doom?

Wouldn’t that be priceless. ♦
