Above, MPP Sam Oosterhoff with 613 Royal Canadian Army Cadet. A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE On a cold but sunny Sunday morning, Fenwick residents gathered at Centennial Park in remembrance of the men and women who fought for Canada’s freedom. To start the ceremony, cadets and firefighters marched in solidarity. Three veterans were present, as well as MP Dean Allison, MPP Sam Oosterhoff and Mayor Marvin Junkin. The flag was lowered to half-mast during two minutes of silence, allowing those present to reflect upon the bravery of those who sacrificed themselves for the country. “On behalf of the nation, I want to thank all the families, soldiers, and veterans for their sacrifice,” said Allison. Wreaths were placed by the cenotaph, Rev. John Cathcart led everyone in prayer, the national anthem was sung, and the Flander’s Field poem recited. Turnout was good, with most people bundled against a brisk breeze. “We remember the men and women who offered us a better future,” said Junkin. “We carry and pass the torch.” MEGAN METLER PHOTOS

SKED BY A CASUAL acquaintance and Voice contributor to consider committing our chance encounter to paper, I have decided to do just that. Our story begins on a blazing hot July day this summer, in my driveway. This summer’s to-do list included cleaning out the garage, after some 30 years of neglect. I would like to think my recollection of the contents was intact, but maybe I would find some hidden gems in there. The process started with me renting a medium sized bin. All shiny and lime green, dropped off right there in the driveway, empty, ready to go. I mean how much stuff could I possibly have to throw out? The week-long adventure started with putting my once beloved 10-speed bike out beside the bin in the hope that it could find a new life, bringing as much happiness to someone else. I have many fond memories of my years on that bike! Riding home from See COLUMN SIX Page 22
