hen World War I began, my g ra ndpa rent s could not have imagined that five of their ten children would sign up to fight overseas. At that time most of them lived in the village of Homer, near St. Catharines. The three boys, Alfred, Russell and my dad, Julius, joined first and trained in Niagara-on-the-Lake. At that time training with horses was necessary as much of the fighting in the field was on horseback. During the early training my dad was injured in his knee from the flying hooves of an out-ofcontrol horse, so was given an honorable discharge. He was 39 and felt badly at this turn of events, as he considered it a great honour to fight for your country.

Russell was the first to join, in December 1914, enlisting as a private in the Canadian Army Service Corps, and five months later was promoted to Captain of the Canadian Expeditionary Force when they were shipped overseas. Speaking of dropping names: The Waterloo Region District School Board has passed a motion to review all school names and board facilities to determine whether any have racist links. Interesting reading!...Time’s melody plays on: Bonnie Raitt turned 71 on Sunday, Neil Young turns 75 on Thursday, and Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” was released this week in 1973. (According to a 2011 biography, Joel was only ever paid $8000 in royalties—roughly a dollar for each time I’ve heard the tune, willingly or otherwise, since it was released.)...The weight of history: If the paper seems heavier this week it’s due to three Remembrance Day-inspired stories—lest we forget—each fascinating in its own way. It’s been 75 years since the Allies defeated fascism in Europe and Asia. With much of the world recently again lurching to the far right, the US election results came as good news, if still a sobering reminder that nearly half the population of our southern neighbour remains under the sway of a con man. There are encouraging signs, though, with the Fox News empire, which created #45 as a political force, is now distancing itself from his tantrum over losing.

Let’s hope he goes quietly at the end...Something to cheer you up: I’m afraid I must insist, once you’ve finished reading every one of these sterling 24 pages, that you sit yourself down on the sofa, head to Netflix, and launch into The Queen’s Gambit, the new seven-episode drama that debuted in late October. It is outstanding. You will thank me. Yes, it’s about a 1960s chess prodigy, and this alone put me off until a friend twisted my arm. Resist the urge to binge. Let them settle for a day before moving on...Reality check: Four straight days of 1,000-plus infections in Ontario. Stay safe out there. ◆

Suspect in Clapp murder case hospitalized

Jason Lusted, one of two men detained in the death of Pelham resident Earl Clapp, allegedly attempted suicide by hanging himself last week while in custody at the Niagara Detention Centre, a source told the Voice.

The Ministry of the Solicitor General – the governing body of Ontario corrections facilities – confirmed that an inmate remained hospitalized as of Sunday after being found in medical distress at the jail on Nov. 5.

“The ministry can confirm that an inmate was found in medical distress on November 5th, 2020 at the Niagara Detention Centre,” spokesperson Greg Flood told the Voice. “The inmate was transported to hospital and remains in hospital at this time. It would inappropriate to comment any further as it would a breach of the inmate’s health privacy.”

Lusted, 49, of no fixed address, was arrested on Oct. 10 – eight days after Clapp was dragged to his death by a vehicle police believe was involved in the attempted theft of a trailer from the 74-year-old’s Centre Street property.

Like Lusted, 39-yearold Matthew MacInnes of Wellandport was also arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

guard at the Thorold detention centre. Lusted made a brief video court appearance on Oct. 19 and is due back in court Nov. 27. MacInnes is set to appear again this week.

Lusted was prominently involved in the still-unresolved, decade-and-a-halfold Hamilton murder of Billy Mason. Lusted testified against alleged accomplice Jeremy Hall in that case, claiming he was a bystander as Hall shot Mason and burned his corpse in 2006.

Mason’s ultimate conviction was overturned on appeal in part because of defense lawyers attacking Lusted’s credibility. A verdict in that retrial had been scheduled for last month, but Lusted’s arrest in the Clapp death has prompted Hall’s lawyers to ask for more time to review items “relevant to a material issue in the case.”

BY VOICE STAFF As questions continue to mount regarding an email that Pelham Mayor Dave Augustyn quietly sent to a District School Board of Niagara trustee last summer, Augustyn has agreed to address the issue at a public meeting scheduled for this evening, Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Fenwick.

HEN I WAS young, my father and I would go for long drives along the rural routes of Pelham. We’d blast George Thurgood and roll down the windows because we loved the smell of the breeze, the sensation of crisp Niagara wind beating our cheeks and tangling our hair against our summer-kissed skin.

My father was not a sentimental man. He worked in factories and had a Gordon Lightfoot mustache and never shed tears over injuries.

Yet something about the Pelham landscape, the hilly backdrop to his childhood and the childhoods of our ancestors, drew him in. He’d stop by a farm or a gathering of woods and, surrendering his manly veneer, tell me a story about the town.

This place is precious. This is the earth that granted us life. Here is the place where we happened upon love or here is a site of devastation.

On one particular drive sometime in the late ‘90s we stopped at a tree with a plaque.

“This tree looks dead,” I said to my father.

“It sure is getting there, Julie.”

A construction error was discovered following the opening of a traffic calming chicane on Haist Street north of Hwy 20 last Monday that prevented large vehicles from passing through.

One resident living in the neighbourhood said he contacted the Town after seeing a small schoolbus get stuck as it tried to get through the new traffic calming measure. Later that day while driving behind a cement truck, he said that he became concerned for the public’s safety when the truck had to turn around because it couldn’t get through.

Petition-inspired changes coming to 2017 Summerfest

Representatives from the Pelham Summerfest committee Candy Ashbee and Bill Gibson presented council with a final report on the 2016 Summerfest at the Council meeting on Monday, Nov. 21.

Prompted by a story in the Voice in August about a merchant petition to move Summerfest from Pelham Street, in September Town staff met with various stakeholders to hear their complaints, promising at the time that changes in the way Summerfest was mounted would be con-

sidered.

The main concerns identified during the community engagement process were security, parking, ensuring customer can access all businesses in town, and liability for damages. How to get all Pelham Street businesses to participate and finding ways to make it beneficial for them to set up a booth were also determined to be of high priority for the committee as they plan for next year’s event.

Gibson told Council that the committee is addressing these concerns in a variety of ways. To improve parking, they intend to create bet-

ter signage for out-of-town visitors to designated parking areas and shuttle services. To make participation in Summerfest more enticing to local businesses, they plan to implement a tiered-charge for booths. Under the new system, Pelham Street business owners will be charged the least, other local businesses will pay a slightly higher fee, and vendors from outside Pelham will pay the most. In response to more specific issues for individual businesses, they will also slightly alter the footprint of the event and make adjustments to security.

Another way the committee plans

to improve the 2017 Summerfest is by sponsoring and working with the organizers of the Thursday Night Bandshell Concert series to select the artist performing on the first night of Summefest. They also intend to make more use of the smartphone app they launched in 2016.

"We are really going to push it this year," Ashbee said.

“It really helps to get people to see what events there are so they can plan out where they are going.

Next was a walk to the newsagents to pay for the daily delivery of the Daily Mirror. As I said, Dad was a printer, but when he was 37 he had been rejected for a job, as being too old, by the printers of the Beano.

For that reason, my favourite comic was not allowed in the house, but while I was paying the papers, the newsagent let me have a 'shoofty' at the Beano. I'd explained my predicament and he understood completely.

Sundays were different again. Dad would play golf on summer mornings and billiards in winter. Then he'd stop for a 'refresher' at the local and would pick up the prawns, cockles, winkles or whelks we'd be having for tea later. Meanwhile, Mum was roasting the 'joint' and potatoes. I got to make the Yorkshire pud, and mint

As part of the annual Apple Day campaign, Scouting youth of all ages will be trading apples for donations.

BY VOICE STAFF The District School Board of Niagara is requesting that the Town of Pelham cede a portion of Cherry Ridge Park for use as a soccer field to serve the students of the new Wellington Heights Public School, formerly the E. W. Farr Memorial Public School, in Fenwick.

Currently under renovation and expansion, the new school will combine students and staff from the previous school and Pelham Centre, where classes are being held while construction continues.

Two letters, containing virtually identical text but signed by different authorities, were sent last week to nearby residents of the park, as well as to parents of Pelham Centre students.

“The DSBN is currently building onto Wellington Heights Public School on Alsop Drive,” states the letter. “The size of the school's addition means the existing small soccer field will be eliminated.

The pond, mischievously nicknamed by some “Lake Augustyn,” after Pelham’s former mayor, who oversaw its construction, was built before the community centre and other developments came online in East Fonthill. Designed as a runoff basin in an area that was historically prone to standing water, the pond feeds north under Highway 20 into a stream that in turn feeds Twelve Mile Creek.

Junkin is not the first to highlight the fact that the pond is failing in its purpose by causing severe erosion on the north side of the highway, while allowing warmer-than-ideal water to enter the environmentally sensitive Twelve Mile Creek watershed.

“I’ve observed personally the force of the water coming out of that culvert,” Ward 1 Councillor Wayne Olson said, citing damage to both the Lion’s Club and Pelham Cares’ properties on the north side of 20.

Junkin’s request for a staff report does not ask for money to be allocated to do so, something CAO David Cribbs wanted to clarify.

“There may be a finite amount of [research] that can be done without budgetary dollars associated thereto, and currently this is

“It’s fundamentally a good initiative, but we don’t have any money set aside for it.”

The Mayor said that this was fine, as the report would be a technical compilation of existing records regarding its construction, function and maintenance.

“In respect to the financial constraints that this council is indeed feeling, and having faith in Town staff, I have no problem at all if we can do a thorough review of the technical aspects of the pond and then we’ll go from there,” Junkin said.

As such, it is not difficult to read between the lines that the report could be precursor to potential lit-

igation against the firm that constructed it.

“It’s disheartening that this Town is spending good money looking after mistakes— if I can call them mistakes — that were supposed to be solved by engineered ponds,” Junkin said.

“Something is not right. Either these firms are not taking into consideration the silt soils of the Kame, or I don’t know what it is, but the residents of this Town should not be paying this kind of money for engineered projects.”

Junkin noted that the Town is already set to spend $100,000 on repairs to a different storm water drainage pond, at the end of Station Street, and mentioned a legal

settlement with a property owner after a decades-long problem with another one.

Public Works Director Jason Marr said that the Station Street pond and the East Fonthill one were built by different entities, and added the latter was approved by both the provincial Ministry of the Environment and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority. Marr asked council for time to complete the report given the fact the Town’s engineering department is presently down to a staff of two.

“We’re running on fumes here,” Marr said.

Cribbs suggested February for the report, while Councillor John

Chief Bylaw Enforcement Officer Bob Lymburner told Council that a trend has emerged of what appears to be tailgating in the community centre parking lot. Due to the facility’s COVID-19 policy of only allowing one parent inside per child, Lymburner said that during the warmer months some were congregating outside and consuming “beverages” from the trunks of their vehicles.

Now, with cooler temps, it seems some are trying to truly recreate the atmosphere of a Buffalo Bills tailgate party.

“What has repeated itself a number of times, and has really come up as a big safety concern … is that people are congregating out in the parking lot behind their cars and they’re bringing fire pits,” Lymburner said. The Fire Chief added that his patience has run out, and told councillors that fines are coming—and with them potential complaints to council.

“We had another incident on Friday night, we’ve had a number of incidents prior to that. Just to let council know, that I’m at the point where I’m going to start issuing fines,” Lymburner said. “There’s no way around this … it’s definite a safety issue. But unfortunately, the way things usually play out is when I issue a fine, the first phone that rings is a councillor’s phone.

T

his season of remembrance is different from what we’re used to. In normal times, we’d have made our plans to be together—coats adorned with poppies — at the memorials that dot our towns and cities.

In Ottawa, that would mean crowds that reach into the tens of thousands, shutting down a major part of the downtown. In small communities across the country, those moments of silence are more personal — stone monuments etched with the century’s old names of fallen sons; ceremonies attended by the stoic families of the fathers, mothers, sons and daughters we lost in Afghanistan.

Old men with canes; young women and men with their medals. A trumpet plays, and then it’s quiet.

For two minutes, we stand together in silence in an act of solemn reflection.

It’s what every Canadian should do on Remembrance Day. But not this year.

With large public gatherings on hold, there will be no traditional Remembrance Day ceremonies in 2020. Still, we would never

let November pass without paying tribute to those who have fought and died in service of Canada; we’d never let it pass without thanking those who continue to wear the uniform today.

We can't be together, but that doesn't mean we won't remember

The Royal Canadian Legion is still holding its annual service in Ottawa, but rather than coming together by the thousands at the National War Memorial, we’re asking you to watch from home.

Newsletter sends wrong message I am writing regarding MPP Oosterhoff’s recent newsletter. First, how dare he spend our hard-earned tax dollars in these terrible times on a 22” x 17” colour, glossy publication, which is clearly self-aggrandising. There are 14 colour photos of himself, three of them without a mask. Second, we don’t need to be preached to on how to conduct ourselves during this pandemic by a man who appeared the same week in a photo without a mask in a crowded gathering. Third, he claims to be “so grateful and proud of Niagara West’s front line workers,” and then has the temerity as Assistant to the Education Minister to outline plans for school re-opening without a single dollar assigned to the frontline workers of education, the teachers. That’s right, no extra teachers to lower the classroom density. The plan is to go with the same number of teachers but less education. I know how I’ll be voting in the next provincial election.

OPINION Celebrating Pelham Panthers' history of achievement Don’t you just love reading the Voice and seeing how our young people are doing? We are so proud of our youngsters who are excelling even during these turbulent times.

For the few of us left who were students at Pelham High School in Fenwick to see our “Pelham Panthers” as champions—it is more than pride. It is the knowledge that our Panther good name is being keep alive with such excellence.

We are the “original” Panthers. Our sports teams at the school carried that name and the maroon and grey colours.

The championships began in 1934, when the girl’s basketball team won the COSSA all Ontario championship right through to 1974, when the school closed.

Here are some of the highlights: 1963, Tribune Tournament Champions; 1966, Pelham Panther boys won the Ontario Federation School Athletic Association Title; 1968, Pelham Panthers Football team won

the SOSSA championship. During all those school years that Pelham High was open, there were many individual and team victories both in school, district and provincial meets.

Our outstanding Pelham Panther Olympians: Jane Haist, discus thrower who participated and medaled in several Pan Am games and the 1976 Olympics.

Tom Guinn, pistol shooter, was in the 1976 and 1984 Olympics.

Steve Bauer, cyclist who rode in the 1984 Olympics for a silver medal. Steve also rode in the Tour de France and wore the yellow jersey 14 times!

So you see what it means to all of us “oldies” to know that our young people are keeping that Pelham Panther name alive.

A. K. Wigg says support annual food drive On behalf of the staff and students of A. K. Wigg Elementary School, I regret to inform you that due to health and safety concerns with COVID-19, our students will not be permitted to go door to door to collect donations for the Pelham Cares organization this 2020 holiday season.

Every December, our school food drive provides additional donations (from over 700 homes within our school boundary) to Pelham Cares for distribution during the holiday season.

We would ask for all of those who have supported our school food drive in

the past to please consider contributing to the Pelham Cares 2020 Food Drive.

Donations can be made at the Meridian Community Centre (100 Meridian Way, Fonthill), from now until December 5, on Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 AM – 7 PM, and Saturdays 9 AM – 3 PM. Drop off will be contact-less as masked volunteers will take the food out of your car.

Region's COVID alert level moves from green to yellow

L

ots going on across the country concerning COVID-19, but first we will look at the numbers on the home front. As of Saturday, Pelham had ten active cases. There were 231 active cases across the Region, and 18 active outbreaks. Last week saw the continuing second-wave climb, with double-digit increases daily, with 34 cases on Saturday alone. Seven percent are hospitalized, and just under two percent are in intensive care.

The Niagara Region moved to “yellow-protect” level as of 12:01 AM on Saturday.

This is part of the provincial government’s colour-coded levels of enforcement.

First-and most lenient is green: Prevent. Next yellow: Protect. Orange: restrict.

Red: control. And finally the strictest is: Lockdown.

Although our hospitalizations are low, our rising daily numbers have caused us to be downgraded from the green to yellow. Going into yellow, among other restrictions, means that in restaurants only six people can be seated at any one time at a

Before this, the Public Health Agency of Canada stated that COVID-19 was “most commonly” spread through touching a contaminated surface, or having close contact with an infected person who passed the virus along through droplets when they spoke or coughed.

These large droplets are thought to fall rather quickly to the ground. It now recognises that there are smaller droplets involved—aerosols that can linger in the air, in some instances for as long as 20 minutes. A good friend

of mine, Lou Damm, sent me a You Tube video back in early summer, featuring a research team in Japan creating various sized droplets and recording the time they hung in the air. It was an eye-opening video, stressing that one could be walking down an empty hallway, and still be breathing in these small droplets. In recognizing these aerosols, the agency is now recommending a three-layer mask.

Concerning Town affairs, budget discussions continue to dominate council business, with council members reviewing the budget proposals brought forward by staff. In talking with various councillors, I believe there will be a few cuts recommended to staff.

When traveling from farm to Town Hall, I usually traverse Haist Street north.

It was great to see the hilly part of this road repaved this week! I’m sure the numerous walkers that I see on this section of road will appreciate the smoother surface as much as all other users.

Amalgamating hubs on the Welland Canal Ian Hamilton directs new project

We really take our role in protecting this critical national infrastructure seriously

Muriel Steed (1919-2020) It is with sadness and joy that we share with you the passing of Muriel Steed, the matriarch and rock on which this family stands. At the age of 101, Mother has seen a century of change and guided her family through it with love, compassion, and faith. The eldest child of Barbara (Shouldice) and Rev. Tom Hazlewood, she grew up in manses throughout southern Ontario. After graduation from Victoria College (BA. University of Toronto, ‘42), she married her college sweetheart, Arthur, her partner of 65 years, who was soon ordained into the United Church of Canada. Mother and Dad were a team as they tended to the spiritual needs of communities in Humber Valley and Fonthill. The household was always busy with four children and a slew of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Mother was the go-to person, be it for bruised egos, broken hearts, or cuts and bruises. Through thick and thin, good times and bad, she was the one who we could always count on.

Living through the Great Depression, World War II and many tragedies, she inspired us with her optimism. In her early 90’s, she wrote a book about her life titled “A Happy Life”. She was predeceased by Arthur (2007), and by daughter Elaine (2009). She leaves behind brother John (Hazlewood), sons Art (Janie), and David (Katie), and daughter Barbara, as well as grand children Keri (Mike), Adam (Melissa), Julia (Kieran), Tanis (Michael), and great grand children Katherine, Larkin, Jackson, Atticus, Bennett, and Declan. The memory of this kind, caring, smiling, loving woman of faith will be with us forever.

Visitation took place on Saturday, November 7th from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm at the Fonthill United Church, 42 Church Hill, Fonthill. Having presided over a merger of the Hamilton and Oshawa port authorities in the spring of 2019, Ian Hamilton is preparing to steer his ship through Niagara locks.

As president and CEO of the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA), Hamilton has convinced municipal politicians in Niagara that their ports are underutilized.

The concept of building three hubs along the Welland Canal is moving ahead, championed by Niagara Centre's MP Vance Badawey and the mayors of Port Colborne, Welland, and Thorold.

In late September, those mayors and HOPA’s Hamilton signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) formally requesting that the federal government incorporate its surplus Canal lands under HOPA’s control to move the project forward.

“We certainly believe that an amalgamated port network in southern Ontario makes a lot of sense. The trick is to establish the critical mass to make the right investments, and properly manage the assets,” said Hamilton. “There's a bit of a patchwork of different port facilities, and we think that by tying them together, we can tap into market and investment opportunities, to ensure that they're developed in a sustainable way with the right environmental management.”

SUPPLIED politicians in Niagara has been supportive of this amalgamation for a number of years, given the national and international business implications and opportunities. HOPA is acting as the lead on the project because of their experience and skill set to manage such an operation.

To illustrate the business potential, Hamilton drew on the expression “a rising tide raises all ships,” and suggested that Pelham could certainly be a benefactor.

“In the city of Hamilton, we've attracted a sugar refining business,”

said Hamilton. “They’re bringing the sugar in over the docks and refined it on site. That move has resulted in a huge financial expansion by a local confectioner.”

Hamilton expects an economic domino effect to occur, explaining that the goods that move through the ports are often used to service proximal businesses.

As to a timeline for the development, Hamilton said that they had already started to acquire properties in Thorold.

“Things are going to start to

trickle down in this calendar year.

In the fall, we are expecting to see activity in terms of the partnership development.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it became clear that having resilient supply chains was hugely important to Canada's overall economic success, said Hamilton, who added, “We really take our role in protecting this critical national infrastructure seriously.”

The concept would involve a network of three multimodal industrial hubs located in Port Colborne, Thorold and Welland. All three of the hubs offer development-ready industrial land, along with marine, rail, and highway connections.

Hamilton is confident that traffic congestion on southern Ontario highways would be reduced as a result of the hubs, improving the carbon footprint of Ontario goods being transported to market, and in the process growing cargo volumes on the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The cost advantages of shipping products by water are substantial, given that a ship on the Great Lakes is far more energy efficient than land-based modes. A typical freighter can carry the cargo equivalent of almost a thousand transport trucks.

Community centre skate policy needs to be checked Two weeks ago, I phoned to reserve a spot for skating after having clipped the ad out from the Voice. A friend warned me I needed to call but the ad did not make this so obvious —its small type along the bottom suggesting it.

Regardless, I called several times and finally some-

one answered the phone.

When they did not answer the phone, a message came up that there wasn't anyone available on weekends but my friend said keep trying. I finally got on “the list” and skated with a friend.

When we went skating, I noticed there were only 20 people—not busy and

no music. So the following weekend I didn't bother to reserve and went with another friend—ear pods ready to go for music. (I am assuming that they cannot afford the fees to play music now.)

Surprisingly, we were turned away but again, there were still only 20 peo-

ple skating! The maximum is 50 people.

I asked the woman at the front desk why we couldn't skate? She said the rule is to reserve ahead but many of the residents were not showing up.

So I am clear, if a skater is willing to go skating, money in hand, and there are spac-

es available because of "noshows," they are still not allowed because they haven't called ahead?

Ridiculous! Perhaps this is why the Town of Pelham cannot pay their bills or have music playing at the public skate.

Hunting has been going on along the river and surrounding farmland forever.

Some forget that pioneers of this area hunted and fished along the river for sustenance and supplied firearms to native people to make their hunt easier.

I would equate this objection to someone who moves to a new subdivision and

complains about the farmer spreading manure on the adjacent fields as he has done for years.

To suspect that all the geese are not eaten is just that— a suspicion. There are quite severe penalties and fines for letting game meat spoil. So if she has proof then she should call the MNRF hotline and re-

port them.

Also today, with the milder winters, we have seen that many ducks and geese do not migrate as they should, but stay here all winter and leave their calling card on sidewalks and parkland. Not everyone wants them here as Faye does.

Hunters hunt where the game is Faye Suthons, I am sure, is against any hunting near her property [“Wishes hunters would hunt elsewhere,” Letters, Nov. 4, p.6]. That is her choice and her opinion.

It is also the choice of the hunters who legally hunt nearby. Not all hunters are men and not all hunters are macho and travel hundreds of kilometers with their violent-sounding boom-boom sticks just so they don’t bother anyone. They travel these distances because that is where the game they are hunting exists. There are hunting regulations as to where and when you can have a loaded firearm and where you can discharge it.

There are also municipal regulations on discharging firearms or even a bow and arrow. Faye says she has paid taxes for many years on her property and those taxes are specifically on her property,

not a public waterway or some other person’s property, like the farmer next door. If she lived in Turners Corners would she be against the stock cars that until recently roared around Merrittville Speedway every Saturday night. On some quiet summer nights you could hear them at Niagara College.

Developer set to build on Haist St. John Lally says he's moving in himself

In a Town of Pelham survey conducted in early 2019, 85% of respondent residents indicated an interest in selling the old arena property at 1120 Haist Street.

They’ve gotten their wish.

Mayor Marvin Junkin confirmed with the Voice last week that Lally Homes has purchased the 4.5-acre site, and is planning a development to feature 26 bungalow townhouses on 50-foot lots, 8 detached bungalows on 50-foot lots, and three detached bungalows on 60-foot lots, for a total of 37 units.

The parcel was listed for sale last summer at $3.2 million, but according to Pelham’s Director of Corporate Services and Treasurer Teresa Quinlin, 1120 Haist Street sold for $2.5 million.

Junkin said that council was “very, very enthusiastic” about the project, and “absolutely loves” the site plan that has been developed after taking into consideration extensive feedback from proximal neighbours.

Company president John Lally refers to the project as “a subdivision designed with community in mind.” The entire development will be surrounded by green space, and connected by walking trails. Existing pine trees will be part of the landscape, as will as an adjoining park.

Landscaping and lighting will be included, and overflow parking will be provided. The subdivision will be accessible from both Haist Street and Welland Road.

“Not only will we be utilizing green building products for sustainability, we will also be hiring exclusively local planners and tradespeople to build these quality, energy-efficient homes,” said Lally.

Houses will have single or double garages, and open-concept interiors with nine- or ten-foot-high ceilings. Lally has proposed racquet courts in the design for paddle board, pickle ball, and possibly tennis.

Reflecting on a family's wartime sacrifice

Remembrance Day a solemn occasion for Shirley Lazareth

Shirley Lazareth’s family of patriots paid a heavy price in the cause of freedom.

Most vivid in her mind every November, as Remembrance Day approaches, are the two cousins who paid the supreme sacrifice. Both were WWII bomber pilots, killed over Europe. Len Rogers was 21.

His brother Frank was only 19. The names of both men are on a plaque at the Runnymede Memorial, in Surrey, England.

Frank’s plane was lost during a night training mission on April 12, 1943. He and his crewmates were laid to rest in the Dishforth Cemetery in North Yorkshire, England.

Len’s four-engine heavy bomber, a Hadley Page Halifax carrying a crew of eight, fell victim to a Lufwaffe night fighter at 3 AM on August 3, 1943, and crashed in the North Sea off the coast of the Netherlands. His plane, assigned to the 428 “Ghost” Squadron, had been part of a large-scale attack on industrial targets in Hamburg, Germany. The entire crew perished, and most bodies were not recovered.

The Royal Air Force’s Bomber Command, composed of men from Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, hit targets in Germany relentlessly throughout

the war in Europe, but at a heavy cost. Of a total of 125,000 aircrew, some 57,000 were killed (a 46 percent death rate). A further 8,400 were wounded in action and almost 10,000 became prisoners of war. It was the highest Allied casualty rate of any branch of service during the conflict.

The Rogers brothers were born on Quaker Road in Fonthill, and attended Port Colborne High School, where they were star athletes.

When war broke out in 1939, Len had enlisted first, and became a flight instructor at Camp Borden, north of Toronto. When he learned that his younger brother was graduating from flight school in Aylmer, he hopped in a cockpit and flew to the ceremony, where he was given the honour of pinning the wings on Frank’s lapel. Len had just married Beverly Reeb, of Port Colborne, the weekend before he was shipped out to England for active duty.

Lazareth was 11 when her cousins were killed in action. Now in her late 80s, she reflects back on their heroism, and draws a parallel to the current-day pandemic.

“I think back to my relatives who were on the front lines in two world wars, doing their duty. And I think of all those who are fighting a battle today, as frontline workers in the war against COVID-19. We must each do our part…we too must sacrifice for the common good. It’s our

duty.”

Robert Lennox Rogers, Lazareth’s grandfather, emigrated to Canada from England in 1913 with his family and settled in Pelham.

He operated Rogers’ General Store at the corner of Pelham Street and Highway 20, which much later became the site of Keith’s Restaurant.

At the outbreak of World War I, a sense of patriotism motivated him to return to Europe. He enlisted with his two sons, Bert and Edward (the latter the future father of Len and Frank). Edward was only 15 and too young for military service, but he used the birth certificate of a deceased older brother to qualify. Robert, Bert, and Edward all made it through the Great War unscathed.

Lazareth’s uncle, Arthur Martell Rogers, took part in the ill-fated 1943 Dieppe raid, in which he was wounded, captured, and held as a prisoner of war in Germany until 1945.

Her father would have served in WWII as well, but an injury suf-

fered during an industrial accident left him “4-F” (unfit for combat).

“Dad had to stay home and look after all the women in the family.

He kept all of us going.”

An interesting development has brought her cousin Len’s life and death back into focus for Lazareth.

An archivist at the Port Colborne Museum contacted her months ago, explaining that historical researchers in the Netherlands had identified five Allied flyers who, based on their “dog tags” (identification discs worn by all servicemen) may lie in the unmarked grave of an unknown airman in Holland, buried by Dutch citizens some 77 years ago, when his body washed ashore in November 1943.

One of the possibilities is Len Rogers.

Willem de Jong, a lead researcher with the investigation, has been in contact with Lazareth numerous times via email, sending her information and photos about Len’s plane and its crew. De Jong and his team of volunteer histori-

ans have won her admiration.

“It's just absolutely amazing how the Dutch people have perpetuating the memory of all of these lost airman. Whether they were Allies or German, it didn’t matter. The Dutch respected the sacrifice, and buried them all with reverence.”

The only way to know for sure the identity of the airman in Grave #68 in Holland is to exhume the body and test it for DNA, to see if it matches the genetic code of surviving family members. Lazareth is anxiously awaiting further developments.

The local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has also earned a warm spot in Lazareth’s heart of late.

“They have been good to me this year. I had colon cancer surgery in January, and twice a week during the winter, they brought food to our house,” she said.

But Shirley has grown despondent over the behavior of some young people, who disregard COVID health and safety edicts about wearing a mask and limiting social mingling.

“This is so important. I don’t know how we get through to these young people,” she said. “I've tried speaking to them…telling them about my cousins’ sacrifice, going off to war so young. But many just aren't listening.”

Young airman survived his war, but not his fate Bud Perkins' death in a 1950 plane crash extinguished a dream

H

e was still a 20-yearold kid when he left his farm home in Fonthill for Niagara Falls to enlist in the RCAF, in August 1940, unsure of what lay ahead but certain that he wanted to do his part in the war that was descending upon Europe.

Coleman Douglas Perkins wanted to do it as a flier — “I hope as a fighter pilot,” he remarked in a magazine interview three years later, when he paid a brief visit home after being awarded a Commonwealth Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery and dedication to duty by King George VI, the ceremony held at Buckingham Palace.

Fighter pilots, Perkins had noted, “are the lads who have the fun and get the chance to show initiative.”

And he was determined to become one himself, not just serve as a wireless operator aboard night-flying bombers, as he had done during the two previous years, from a series of Royal Air Force bases situated along England’s North Sea coast.

Following his enlistment, Perkins had reported for training and was sent to RCAF gunnery and radio communication schools in Brandon, Manitoba, and Calgary.

He graduated as a wireless operator with the rank of sergeant and was shipped overseas in July 1941.

Called “Bud” by everyone who knew him, Perkins had an engaging personality, handsome features and easily made friends growing up in Fonthill.

“He was popular and well-liked by everyone,” recalled Brenda Sauer, a niece who had lived nearby in Ridgeville and who had attended SS No. 4 Pelham and later Pelham District High School before moving to St. Catharines.

Growing up herself in Pelham, Sauer was a frequent visitor at her grandparents’ farm along Highway 20, usually walking two kilometres up Haist Street from her home. More often, she helped with chores at the farm and in the Perkins’ fruit orchard. She remembers her Uncle Bud as someone who always had time for her and her same-age cousin Ginny (Virginia), who was living at the farm.

“He had a great smile and beautiful teeth,” she said.

Bud’s good looks also were an obvious social asset while attending Pelham Continuation School in Fenwick, where he was known to be a hit with the girls.

Bud was born in Woodland, Maine, and came to Canada with his brothers Hollis and Martin (Mickey) and sisters Pauline and Dorothy. His parents, John Leroy

PERKINS FAMILY Perkins and Alice May Welton, had moved the family to Thorold in 1925 to start a new life in Canada. A family member speculated years later that John Perkins, who had been born into a large family, may have simply wanted to get away from obligations back home.

Just before the Great Depression, John Perkins, known to friends as Cy, purchased the Fonthill farm and fruit orchard while continuing to work at one of the handful of Thorold paper mills. Eventually, all of the Perkins boys, including Jim, who was born here a year before sister Bette, would be employed at the mills. For a brief period, Bud worked alongside them.

But Bud saw opportunities elsewhere, and the war in Europe offered him a chance to pursue them. His niece recalled a raft of model airplanes hanging from his bedroom ceiling, and a bulky shortwave radio on a nearby table, where Perkins eagerly followed news of the growing conflict. He had an early interest in aviation.

What better chance than now to enlist, he felt.

Once overseas, the young airman was quickly attached to the RAF’s No. 9 Squadron, one of a number of squadrons comprising

6 Group of Bomber Command, and assigned to crew aboard a twin-engine Vickers Wellington.

The squadron, he told Maclean’s magazine writer Gordon Sinclair, while on a visit home in late 1943, “was one of the oldest and finest, and one of the first squadrons to attack Germany in the war.”

Europe was by then in the visegrip of the Second World War, still a year and a half away from victory by the Allied forces, and bombing runs over Nazi Germany were nearing their peak. Some of Bud’s early missions were “to mine the sea lanes off the Dutch coast. We carried two mines of a ton each and two 250-pound bombs.”

Perkins recalled one night mission in particular, when the crew’s Wellington, nearing a group of Dutch islands off the North Sea coast in the moonlight, was suddenly spotted by the enemy below.

“Like a flash of lightning we were trapped by 10 searchlights.

Trusty [pilot Vic Trustrum, of Toronto] immediately threw the stick forward and the nose dropped down and we were into a steep dive. Flak thumped around us. It was green and yellow and red — all sorts of colours.”

“My intercom plug came out of the socket and I lost contact with the rest of the fellows. There were so many explosions right outside the aircraft, I couldn’t count them,” he said. “I was thrown against the outside of the ship.

But I knew we were too low to bail out.”

Caught in the grip of the bomber’s dive to evade the guns below, Perkins found himself rendered immobile, “not being able to do anything. I wasn’t particularly frightened. Everything was happening too quickly, but I remember mumbling to myself, ‘Well, this is it. I guess it’s all over….’ ” Just then, the pilot managed to pull the Wellington out of its dive and the plane started to climb. Perkins plugged his headset cord back into the plane’s intercom in time to

hear the front gunner, Joe Miesen, an American from Arkansas, shout, “Hey, I’ve got a fire here in the front turret!”

Perkins hastily picked up a nearby extinguisher and put out the flames.

The thought of a fire aboard the ship made him a little shaky. “We had to lay our mines and we had to get away from there, but the most important thing to be done was to get the fire under control,” he said.

The ground firing continued as the plane weaved away.

“The flak kept going by in big red bursts,” Perkins recalled, before realizing the intercom had been shot away. “Then I heard Trusty say, ‘There seems to be something wrong with the starboard engine.’ ” With everyone holding their breath, the Wellington proceeded down to 500 feet and the sea mines were laid. Setting out on a course to return back to their base, Trustrum found the weather less than ideal and discovered the bomber was too high for a landing approach, meaning the plane had to go around before

making another try.

“Trusty pranged the throttles forward...there was a terrific shudder from the starboard engine,” Perkins recalled. “We had to stick the nose down and make a forced landing. When we got out, we found just a stub of a blade on the starboard prop. A shell had gone through her.

We took 19 other hits, yet our Wellington was back in the skies two or three nights later, good as ever, out on a bombing raid.”

Receiving his DFC medal from King George, Perkins was cited for displaying “exceptional keenness and devotion to duty. He has highly efficient and courageous qualities which have made his a valuable member of [the] aircraft crew.”

The citation noted that among Bud’s “many sorties” were raids on Genoa, Turin, Munich and Berlin. He also participated in daylight attacks on Le Creusot, in France, and over Milan.

In other community centre news, council unanimously approved a motion from Ward 3’s Lisa Haun to create a short-term working group tasked with improving the facility’s bar/servery area and dedicating it to late Councillor Mike Ciolfi.

“This was something that was very important to Mike,” said Haun, who appointed herself to chair the group. “It’s very fitting that it would be at the MCC. He was very proud of the MCC. It’s something I know the Ciolfi family is very keen on as well.”

Junkin was supportive of the idea, but mentioned that some resident in Ciolfi’s Ward 1 have asked him about other options to honour the late councillor in that particular area.

Haun said she would support that, but said the MCC dedication “certainly is the project.”

Ward 1 Councillor Marianne Stewart added that because the whole town uses the community centre, she

Nohara told Wink that he expects to have a draft bylaw available on cannabis industry light pollution in Pelham by the end of the year. Elsewhere on the cannabis front, the City of Thorold advised council by letter that they have “received and filed” Pelham’s request that the neighbouring municipality contribute $15,000 toward this Town’s cannabis-related legal costs.

Bridge and culvert analysis

Council heard details of the 2020 Bridge and Culvert Inspection Program, a provincially-mandated engineering checkup on every major bridge and culvert in the Town every two years.

Marr ran down the items for councillors, making note of their previous request to keep “pages in the agenda short.”

According to the data, Pelham has 23 such structures defined as having a span of three metres or more. Seventy-eight percent of the structures were defined as in being in “very good” or “good” condition, with the remaining 22 percent categorized as “fair” or “poor.”

However, nearly half the total structures require urgent maintenance or repair according to contractor Ellis Engineering — although much of that is classified as due-diligence maintenance.

“We knew that protection of this beautiful parkland was important to them, and that four or five story multiplex buildings were not going to suitable.”

An active player in the retirement home industry, Lally Homes has also de-

veloped a number of golf course communities. Lally said his father designed and built 30 golf courses, with about half of them being golf course communities with subdivisions included in the site plan.

He said he understands the demand for housing for seniors who want independent living.

Currently a resident of St. Catharines, Lally plans on relocating his family to Fonthill to take up residence in one of the bungalows in the new development.

“If anybody has complaints, they won't have far to go,” he said with a laugh.

An existing steel Quonset hut at the back of the arena, along with anything from the arena that can be

salvaged and reused, is going to the benefit of local non-profit organizations.

Junkin suggested that a bidding process may be drafted, and an auction held at a future date.

“For some Pelham folks, there will be a lot of memories in that building,” said L ally.

Demolition of the old arena, built in 1967, is expected to commence next spring, with the entire

development to be completed by the summer of 2022. Entry level pricing for units will likely start at under $600,000.

“If I could come home for a while and tell you all about everything, you could understand what we are up against,” Bud wrote on January 20, 1942, in a letter home to his father. But he added, “Don’t think I am complaining or feel sorry for myself. I still think I made a good bargain.”

Of all the RCAF’s operations in the war, the most costly in terms of men and aircraft had been the bombing offensive against Germany. By October 1942, the RCAF had five bomber squadrons serving with the RAF. Within three months, the bomber squadrons grew to 11 as Canadian airman serving with RAF units were transferred to distinctively RCAF squadrons.

No. 6 Group lost 100 bombers in raids over Germany. In total, 9,980 Canadians were killed in raids against German cities during 1940-45, rendering the bombing offensive as one of the most costly operations for Canada in World War II. According to official reports, the men who served in Bomber Command faced some of the most difficult odds of anyone fighting in the war. The risks were so high that almost half of all aircrews never made it to the end of their tours.

It was one of these assignments, on June 30, 1950, that nearly cost him his life. Perkins was part of a four-member forestry crew, including the pilot, when their de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver crashed near Temagami, 80 kilometres north of North Bay, after the engine cut out without warning. No one was seriously hurt and Bud told his family later that the accident hadn’t fazed him.

“My mother told me that Bud had jumped before it hit the ground,” Sauer recalled. “He didn’t break anything. He just jumped and that was it.”

A Canadian Press report at the time said the four men spent the night in a makeshift tent “on top off the slope on which the plane had crashed.”

But Bud’s luck ran out two months later. Another Provincial Air Service aircraft, a Noorduyn Norseman, crashed and burned August 30, while attempting to land on a small lake, again near Temagami, killing Perkins and four other department staff. Four of the men had been RCAF veterans.

The single-engine floatplane was carrying a small tractor and may have been overloaded, although investigators blamed engine failure at low altitude. The resulting fire was so intense that it was difficult for investigators to identify the charred bodies, although Perkins’ family was told later that Bud, who had been wearing a leather jacket, had covered his face with an arm just as See PERKINS next page

Phil pushed off, clicked into his clipless pedals, and rode perhaps 100 metres of relatively flat pavement before encountering the final incline that would get us out of the valley. Greg and Stan rode with Phil, and I pedalled quietly a short distance behind. Phil applied every ounce of torque that his legs could produce to move his bike forward without getting off.

At times I was unsure if the pedals would respond to his weight and strength, and turn the wheels, or he would grind to a halt and fall over. Phil used the whole road, moving from side to side to reduce the incline as he willed his legs to push.

Someone shouted, “You got this, we’re at the top.” The four of us

picked up speed on the flats, met with those waiting farther ahead, and continued our pleasant, brisk ride for 30 kilometres through North Pelham and Fenwick.

I remained at the back for a while, with emotions racing.

Early into the ride, when Gary and I found ourselves ahead of the group, he mentioned that Phil had some difficulty with his legs, and it slowed him down some times.

No more was said. hil Huntley was a Fonthill resident for years before he moved to St Catharines. I contacted him a couple of days after our ride.

Phil shared that he has Hereditary Spastic Parapleigia, and said it’s named after what it is.

“It’s hereditary, and it causes your legs not to work. It’s a neurological disease. I have a younger brother that can’t walk at all.”

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in the United States expands on Phil’s definition. “HSP refers to a

group of inherited disorders that are characterized by progressive weakness and spasticity (stiffness) of the legs. In early stages of the disease, there may be mild gait difficulties and stiffness.

These symptoms typically slowly progress so that eventually individuals with HSP may require the assistance of a cane, walker, or wheelchair because of progressive lower limb spasticity and weakness.” Experimental therapy trials to correct the genes responsible are now underway, but at present there is no cure.

Early in our conversation, I told Phil that I was calling because I was moved by the courage he showed cycling the hills, and that I thought his story was inspirational.

His response was swift, and emotional.

“To me, it’s the opposite. My friends will say ‘Don’t get him started.’

For me, cycling is a godsend, because I can still do it.

Without biking, I wouldn’t enjoy life as much. I think one of the things with any disease like this is you get depressed, especially in that you can’t move. The physical activity that biking gives me makes me feel good. I know if I don’t do it, I’ll feel bad. So, it works both ways.”

He matter-of-factly explained that there was little pain while cycling, but that climbing hills and riding into the wind was difficult because his legs muscles were atrophying and could no longer produce the required power.

Phil and his wife enjoyed cruising (pre-COVID), in part because he can cycle while in port.

“Instead of doing a walking tour, we’ll do the biking tours. I can ride a bike better than I can walk.”

Part of the reason for this is because his feet are numb, and his balance is better on the bike, where he can use his whole body to steady himself, than when he is

walking.

When he rides, Phil “clips in.”

This means his cycling shoes are actually attached to the pedals when he’s on his bike.

“My friends call me ‘Crash’ because sometimes I can’t get my feet out of the clips quick enough,” he said with a laugh.

Yet he added that his wife is more worried about him getting into an accident on the bike than anything else, and his kids are supportive of his riding.

“They all think I should be doing this.”

Phil has SPG-8, a rare form of HSP, and it appeared in mid-life.

He was a runner during his late 40s and early 50s, competing in half-marathons, often with his daughter, and the Around-theBay race in Hamilton. He and his daughter now stay in touch via Strava, the web-based software company that allows them to See HANDLEBARS Page 24

But a friend in England sent them an advertisement from a British newspaper asking for nurses to join the “Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve.” (Queen Alexandra was the wife of King Edward VII). They applied at

Gladys to join her. They applied at several hospitals in the US and Canada but it was only the prestigious Bellevue Hospital in New York City that would take sisters. Their father was furious at this decision to be nurses, believing that it was no profession for ladies. Apparently, the famous work of Florence Nightingale had not yet made its impression.

The training was rigorous, demanding, but exhilarating, and they graduated in 1916. Almost the last straw for their father to

he faced five horrible days in “No Man’s Land,” where he was badly wounded and captured by the Germans.

Because his army tag was found and brought back to base, Russ was declared dead and the family in Canada received this news with grieving hearts. In actual fact, Russ was taken prisoner by the Germans in Wurzburg and spent 22 months of horror in a prisoner of war camp. Most of his father’s letters never got to him, although his monthly letters to his family in Canada arrived safely. In May 1918, Russ was released and sent to Holland for six months’ rehabilitation before coming home to Canada. Looking at a photograph of Russ after he returned home is to look into the face of a haunted man.

Alfred enlisted in Haileybury, Northern Ontario. His jewelry story had burned previously so there was little keeping him. In 1915 he was promoted to Captain after being Lieutenant in the 97th Regiment. In June 1916 he left for France as Major Alfred James Ansley.

Alf was killed in action near Corcelette, in the Abert-Bapaume Sector, in October 1916. As one of the soldiers whose graves are not known, his name is com-

human beings. The hospital was the target of bombs occasionally, but they were unharmed.

The sisters —always the planners —often would talk about what they would l like to do after the war, together, if possible. Dared they think of having a business where the six sisters could handle being together? Perhaps it could be a school of some kind, or a convalescent hospital.

These plans were percolating in Nora’ s and Gladys’ heads while they were nursing the soldiers.

But Nora was developing severe pain that turned into a very painful type of rheumatoid arthritis. Eventually she had to be invalided home near the end of the war in a crippled condition.

All their plans were on hold.

After the war the family were together again and their next chapter began in 1920— organizing the first school of its kind in Canada, with Nora as Matron —but that is another tale. ◆

Most of Nora’s and Gladys’ military nursing was in the Italian city of Taranto, on the inside of the heel of the “Italy boot.” They lived in unheated tents that were fine in summer but the winters were cold and rainy. Water collected on the floor, their beds were damp, and shoes and clothing had to be hung on the walls somehow. But they enjoyed the challenge of the work, knowing that they were helping life. Letters received and filed after the war from their former patients thank them for their thoughtfulness, care, and for treating their charges as

Determined Tiger back on track

Jacob Cielen-Gough will always remember Halloween, 2020.

The 17-year-old St. Catharines native didn’t come up with a creative or unique costume, collect a bunch of goodies, or even go to a party with his friends.

Instead, Cielen-Gough skated for the first time with the Ridley Prep Boys hockey team after suffering a brain hemorrhage in May, 2019.

“It was really a lot of fun. The guys let me do the lap at the beginning and that definitely gave me a moment,” he said. “It was great to be back.”

Cielen-Gough was cleared to return to practice with his teammates after working out on the ice at his own pace.

The return was another step in Cielen-Gough’s recovery from the hemorrhage which occurred about a month after returning from rookie camp with the Flint Firebirds. Flint selected the defenceman in the 15th round of the 2019 Ontario Hockey League draft.

It happened when Cielen-Gough was working out following a high school track and field meet. He wasn’t feeling 100 per cent but figured it might be exhaustion after qualifying for OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) earlier in the day.

Cielen-Gough began doing some squats when he lost vision in his right eye and

started to get dizzy.

“I went to sit down and missed the bench.

I just laid on the ground and then threw up and then went to sleep,” he said.

Once at the hospital, it was determined the bleeding was caused by an arteriovenous malformation, an irregular entanglement of blood vessels in the brain.

At first, doctors inserted a tube to extract the excessive blood from his brain; Surgery was ruled to be too dangerous. He later underwent radiation treatment which shrunk the AVM. “It was pretty scary. At first, when I went to the hospital I didn’t realize what it was or fully understand how scary it was. As I progressed in my recovery, I started to realize it was a big deal,” he said.

Cielen-Gough, who was previously a student at Sir Winston Churchill, enrolled in Ridley in the fall of 2019 and has continued to progress.

He reports no problems in the classroom although he needed extra rest when he first began back and was given permission to nap during chapel or assemblies.

“They (Ridley) really accommodated me. They were really good. They definitely helped me to progress in my recovery,” Cielen-Gough said.

One side effect from the aneurysm is double vision in his right eye, which Cielen-Gough says he hopes will be corrected with surgery later this year. He keeps the eye shut most of the time to avoid distraction.

“When you have to focus, you don’t worry about it too much. It’s not really on your mind. It will be open when I’m doing work in class and I won’t notice it,” he said.

Other than that, Cielen-Gough goes about his business as usual, although he needs to avoid lifting heavy amounts of weights and must steer clear from contact on the ice for the time being.

“I do whatever I can. When I feel good, I get some workouts in and continue to eat healthy, get a good amount of sleep and live a healthy lifestyle so when I can get back, I’m refreshed and can go hard.

“There’s nothing I can do about it so I don’t think too much and try to do what I can to prevent it from happening again.”

Cielen-Gough, who is hopeful of returning to the team later this season, admits the experience has changed him.

“I’m just trying to live my life to the fullest,” he said. “It made me realize to maybe be a little nicer to people because you never know what’s going to happen.

“You always have to work for what you want and be happy with what you have because it can be gone in a second. It opened my eyes to that kind of thing.”

He appreciates having a passion to keep him motivated.

“The hockey definitely keeps me going. I know if I can get back on the ice and get back to what I love, it helps me want to get better and get to the next stage so I can get back on the ice.”

An unexpected ride of inspiration

O

n the way out for a quick ride Tuesday afternoon, I noticed a small group of guys about my age unloading bicycles from their vehicles at Harold Black Park, apparently getting ready for a ride. A quick U-turn on haste followed so I could say hello, and see if I recognized anyone. I did. Gary and I had ridden together many times in the past, although it had been a couple years since we’d met on the road. I soon had an invitation to join their ride, which I gladly accepted, bicycle tramp that I am.

Our route led to Cataract Road, then Holland Road

into Shorthills, heading west through a deep valley toward Effingham Road. If I’m riding with unfamiliar cyclists, I will always hang back to be the last one down a hill. I’m a cautious descender, and don’t want to be run over.

Halfway up the steep hill out of the valley, two riders were walking their bikes when I approached. Greg said that his bike had stuck in a gear too high to ride up the challenging hill, so he had to dismount and walk.

Phil didn’t say anything, just pushed his bike with a smile.

Once we’d regrouped at the top, I once more as-

sumed a position at the rear.

There is a small incline near the junction of Sulphur Spring Drive and Roland Road, and Phil stopped at its base. He laid his bike on its side so he could dismount, and walked up the incline. I stayed behind as Phil, Greg and now Stan gathered as the road levelled.

He carefully removed his water bottle from its cage to increase the open space available in his frame.

The hinges of history

D

id you know that history has hinges?

A “hinge of history” is an event which powerfully impacts the course of humanity. There have been many throughout the centuries but here are a few more recent examples.

9/11

The date “9/11” has been indelibly imprinted on the consciousness of the world.

What happened on September 11, 2001 not only shocked and changed America but also the entire globe.

The magnitude of the carnage (almost 3000 perished that day) and the boldness of the terror (the cruel creativity of flying jetliners into skyscrapers) will never be forgotten. The attack targeted America’s leading city of commerce (New York) and centre of political power (Washington).

This hinge event is comparable to Pearl Harbour, which President Roosevelt called “a day of infamy,” and which brought a reluctant US into World War II. The hinge of 9/11 brought modern-day America into another conflict — the long and ongoing “war against terror.”

It changed that nation’s sense of security at home and foreign policy abroad.

And the choice of day was not accidental, but symbolic.

On September 11, 1683, European armies stopped the advance of invading Turkish forces at the gates of Vienna, Austria. That turning point led to the gradual decline of the Ottoman Empire… and Islamic radicals never forgot.

Just over 13 years later, Canada would have its own “9/11.”

On October 22, 2014, a lone gunman killed an unarmed soldier standing guard at our national War Memorial in Ottawa. Then, amazing-

ly, he managed to enter our Parliament buildings with a rifle and advanced to within metres of our Prime Minister, cabinet and MPs of all parties assembled in caucus.

Only then was he stopped and killed.

Thankfully, the Canadian version involved a lot less carnage (although one wonders what might have happened) but it still represented a shockingly bold example of terror in our nation’s capital and seat of power.

We now know the attacker’s life was a tragic mix of drug addiction, a criminal past and toxic religion. And

most probably, the timing was also symbolic. A few days earlier, Canada had sent six fighter jets to Kuwait to help combat the new terror state called ISIS.

This week we celebrate Remembrance Day — November 11, 2020. It was chosen because on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, World War I finally came to an end.

In January, he told her to get ready because he was going to "take her on the town", which meant a night at the casino. As they got dressed, she heard a gurgling sound and sharply turned around. It was too late. The life had gone from his eyes. He had died from a massive heart attack.

The next evening, I was at the funeral home making sudden arrangements, with my grandmother still in shock. Since there was no prearranged and prepaid funeral in order, everything was rushed and impulsive. We had to figure out what he would have wanted and everyone had their own opinions of what should happen. There was confusion, and most significantly, my grandma had to figure out how she was going to pay for this funeral.

Filling 2⁄3 cup heavy cream 2⁄3 cup milk 8 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped 2 eggs

I share this story because it is my first and deepest experience with loss, and it is when I witnessed first hand the relief and value that prearranging could have brought my family. This is why I am so passionate about helping families prearrange every day.

Crumble Topping 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 3/4 cup toasted pecans 4 ounces semisweet chocolate 3 ounces amaretti cookies 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa

Many families are recognizing that funeral planning is something that needs to be looked after because of factors like inflation and having family out of town. It just makes sense! In my experience, the following are fundamental reasons why people should pre-plan their final wishes.

To make the pie dough, sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl, rub in the butter, and stir in the sugar, then add the egg and a little water to bring the dough together. Turn the dough out, and knead briefly. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 375 F. Roll out the pie dough and use to line a 9-inch loose-button tart pan. Prick the pastry shell with a fork. Line with parchment paper and fill with dried beans or baking beans. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and take out the paper and beans. Reduce the oven temperature to 350 F. To make the filling, bring the cream and milk to a boil in a saucepan, immediately remove from the heat, and add the chocolate. Stir until melted and smooth. Beat the eggs and add to the chocolate mixture, mix thoroughly and pour into the shell. Bake for 15 minutes, remove from the oven, and let rest for 1 hour.

When you are ready to serve the pie, place the topping ingredients in a food processor and pulse to chop. (If you do not have a processor, place the sugar in a large bowl, chop the nuts and chocolate with a large knife, and crush the cookies, then add to the bowl with the cocoa and mix well.)

Sprinkle over the pie, then serve it in slices.

Phil’s response to each question was honest and informative, and always presented with humour. Twice Phil referred to the group of guys he rides with, but only after instructing me to be very selective with what I put in print. He confided, “They may be ahead of me, but I know they’ll stay with me, so I’m not afraid because I’ve got somebody.

It’s really great that I’ve got a great bunch of guys....”

He paused, muttering something I didn’t completely catch but knew it had to do with the needling he’ll take when this runs in the Voice, then continued, ”But you know, it’s true.”

I asked Phil if there’s an Ebike in his future, which would provide a way to keep riding if his leg strength deteriorates further.

“You know, I was thinking of that, and a gravel bike. [Gravel road adventure cycling is a rapidly trending segment of the bicycle scene.] Maybe get a folding gravel bike, and if I could take them with us on cruises...” He has already moved on to a bright future of more riding.

Then he invited me to ride with his group at the Mount Tremblant Grand Fondo in May 2021.

I cherish my good health, and hope to maintain it, as we all do. But if it ever leaves me, I hope I can handle it with the optimism, grace and humour that Phil does, by riding my bike. ◆
