Former Ward 1 councillor files for mayoral run Former Councillor Marvin Junkin is the first official candidate in the mayoral race, filing his nomination papers last Thursday and then marching in the Fenwick Lions parade on Friday evening. Junkin, who was elected to represent Ward 1 in 2014, resigned from Pelham Town Council last November, alleging that the true state of the Town’s finances was being withheld from the public. The decision to run for mayor, Junkin said, was not one that he made until recently. “I resigned because I thought I had a duty to tell my constituents the information Council was given on September 5,” he said. “If I hadn’t resigned, I don’t think that it would have ever come out.” “I started thinking about running after speaking at some of the Regional Council meetings,” said Junkin. “I did that all as a private citizen—I was never involved with any group. I was trying to get answers about the Town’s finances.” Upon his resignation, Junkin alleged that the Town had emptied its reserves, leaving it $17 mil-

HREE AND HALF years ago, we transplanted from the thick, chunky stew of Toronto to the thin, translucent broth of Fonthill. Many of our urban friends couldn’t understand why we wanted to leave. Many of our new rural friends couldn’t understand why we wanted to come. To answer our old friends, we sought peace, space, affordability, and free parking. To our new friends, while the city is undoubtedly a vibrant and eclectic place, it comes with its share of problems. When you feel like complaining about small town living, perhaps consider these examples of metropolitan mayhem, which may change your perspective. I remember making a presentation to the Toronto City Council to support my application for the ad-

Council backs off Region demand In reversal of course, Town won't seek to recover costs

BY VOICE STAFF Just two weeks after it voted in favour of the idea of billing the Region of Niagara, Pelham Town Council abruptly reversed course Monday evening, with all but Councillor Gary Accursi electing to drop the matter. Billing the Region was recommended by CAO Darren Ottaway, with the would-be invoice including $117,000 paid to KPMG for

its audit of an East Fonthill land deal, as well as funds spent on lawyers, all told some $160,000. Earlier in the month, Councillor Richard Rybiak spearheaded the motion, calling “the entire episode completely unnecessary. We’re not going to get

back the sleepless nights, get back the arguments, get back the stress. The only thing we can get back is the money. We should make the attempt to recover it,” said Rybiak. During that meeting, Council did not discuss the $32,500 that KPMG discov-
