The gradual awakening: As the province continues to loosen the lockdown, a range of Pelham businesses are reopening this week. PetValu, in Fonthill, is ready to roll big time. The Pelham Street Grille and Peter Piper’s Pub are both increasing their take-out selection and hours. DeVries Fruit Farm has added some additional items and revamped its website.

And Lampman’s Furniture, in Fenwick, is holding one monster of a reopening sale, with 20% off of everything in the store. I guess we should have waited for a pandemic to buy our new sofa!...About that assault weapons ban poll: So. Last week, in anticipation of running this week’s story on local response to the new federal ban on assault-style weapons (p.

7), we decided to run an opinion poll to solicit the reaction of Voice readers on the topic. Amazingly, before the paper even hit the street last Tuesday morning, there had been dozens of responses on the Voice website. Within two days there were 1000. As of the poll’s closure this Monday, there were 2360 responses. This is roughly ten times the response that most Voice polls get, with few cracking the 300 mark.

It didn’t take long to see what happened. One or more gun enthusiasts saw the poll appear on our website last Monday evening, as the paper went to press, and alerted like-minded enthusiasts—not just locally, not just in Ontario, but across Canada and into the US. Random sampling of IP addresses revealed “Voice readers” in various Canadian provinces, Idaho, Florida, Missouri, and Texas. One respondent, clearly not the brightest bulb, emailed from Alberta to complain that he was unable to vote, and though he had never seen the paper this must mean were deliberately skewing the results.

(The poll software prevents multiple votes from the same IP address.) Not surprisingly, 99.9% of the responses were anti-ban. This, of course, entirely wrecked any semblance of poll validity. Therefore, last Friday at 5 PM, we sent a special request to our member-subscriber list, asking them to take the poll before midnight, and not to share the link, thereby protecting the integrity of the results. A good percentage of them did respond, and it is their answers which appear to the right, and which are clearly more reflective of likely opinion on this topic in Pelham and Niagara. Incidentally, there are current or former gun owners on Voice staff and among our contributors. We did not approach this story with any agenda. I think that writer Don Rickers’ story does an admirable job of presenting all sides. In an effort to bring further attention and deterrence to driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, the Niagara Regional Police Service reports the names of those people who are charged with an alleged criminal impaired driving offence in the Region. None of the following charges have been proved in court.

In addition to being charged, these individuals are also bound by a Ministry of Transportation 90-Day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension and are prohibited from operating a motor vehicle on a roadway. The public is encouraged to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service Traffic Safety Hotline or Crime Stoppers to report those who are driving in contravention of the suspension.

BY VOICE STAFF As questions continue to mount regarding an email that Pelham Mayor Dave Augustyn quietly sent to a District School Board of Niagara trustee last summer, Augustyn has agreed to address the issue at a public meeting scheduled for this evening, Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Fenwick.

HEN I WAS young, my father and I would go for long drives along the rural routes of Pelham. We’d blast George Thurgood and roll down the windows because we loved the smell of the breeze, the sensation of crisp Niagara wind beating our cheeks and tangling our hair against our summer-kissed skin.

My father was not a sentimental man. He worked in factories and had a Gordon Lightfoot mustache and never shed tears over injuries.

Yet something about the Pelham landscape, the hilly backdrop to his childhood and the childhoods of our ancestors, drew him in. He’d stop by a farm or a gathering of woods and, surrendering his manly veneer, tell me a story about the town.

This place is precious. This is the earth that granted us life. Here is the place where we happened upon love or here is a site of devastation.

On one particular drive sometime in the late ‘90s we stopped at a tree with a plaque.

“This tree looks dead,” I said to my father.

“It sure is getting there, Julie.”

A construction error was discovered following the opening of a traffic calming chicane on Haist Street north of Hwy 20 last Monday that prevented large vehicles from passing through.

One resident living in the neighbourhood said he contacted the Town after seeing a small schoolbus get stuck as it tried to get through the new traffic calming measure. Later that day while driving behind a cement truck, he said that he became concerned for the public’s safety when the truck had to turn around because it couldn’t get through.

Petition-inspired changes coming to 2017 Summerfest

Representatives from the Pelham Summerfest committee Candy Ashbee and Bill Gibson presented council with a final report on the 2016 Summerfest at the Council meeting on Monday, Nov. 21.

Prompted by a story in the Voice in August about a merchant petition to move Summerfest from Pelham Street, in September Town staff met with various stakeholders to hear their complaints, promising at the time that changes in the way Summerfest was mounted would be con-

sidered.

The main concerns identified during the community engagement process were security, parking, ensuring customer can access all businesses in town, and liability for damages. How to get all Pelham Street businesses to participate and finding ways to make it beneficial for them to set up a booth were also determined to be of high priority for the committee as they plan for next year’s event.

Gibson told Council that the committee is addressing these concerns in a variety of ways. To improve parking, they intend to create bet-

ter signage for out-of-town visitors to designated parking areas and shuttle services. To make participation in Summerfest more enticing to local businesses, they plan to implement a tiered-charge for booths. Under the new system, Pelham Street business owners will be charged the least, other local businesses will pay a slightly higher fee, and vendors from outside Pelham will pay the most. In response to more specific issues for individual businesses, they will also slightly alter the footprint of the event and make adjustments to security.

Another way the committee plans

to improve the 2017 Summerfest is by sponsoring and working with the organizers of the Thursday Night Bandshell Concert series to select the artist performing on the first night of Summefest. They also intend to make more use of the smartphone app they launched in 2016.

"We are really going to push it this year," Ashbee said.

“It really helps to get people to see what events there are so they can plan out where they are going.

Next was a walk to the newsagents to pay for the daily delivery of the Daily Mirror. As I said, Dad was a printer, but when he was 37 he had been rejected for a job, as being too old, by the printers of the Beano.

For that reason, my favourite comic was not allowed in the house, but while I was paying the papers, the newsagent let me have a 'shoofty' at the Beano. I'd explained my predicament and he understood completely.

Sundays were different again. Dad would play golf on summer mornings and billiards in winter. Then he'd stop for a 'refresher' at the local and would pick up the prawns, cockles, winkles or whelks we'd be having for tea later. Meanwhile, Mum was roasting the 'joint' and potatoes. BY VOICE STAFF The District School Board of Niagara is requesting that the Town of Pelham cede a portion of Cherry Ridge Park for use as a soccer field to serve the students of the new Wellington Heights Public School, formerly the E. W. Farr Memorial Public School, in Fenwick.

Currently under renovation and expansion, the new school will combine students and staff from the previous school and Pelham Centre, where classes are being held while construction continues.

Two letters, containing virtually identical text but signed by different authorities, were sent last week to nearby residents of the park, as well as to parents of Pelham Centre students.

“The DSBN is currently building onto Wellington Heights Public School on Alsop Drive,” states the letter. “The size of the school's addition means the existing small soccer field will be eliminated.

Kore’s back—with apology Corporate statement says COVID-19-positive Sobeys franchisee “regrets coming to work with flu-like symptoms”

BY VOICE STAFF Corporate statement says COVID-19-positive Sobeys franchisee "regrets coming to work while experiencing flu-like symptoms” Ron Kore, the Sobeys franchisee and town councillor who continued working and attending council while exhibiting symptoms of respiratory illness, and who later tested positive for COVID-19, has been cleared

by Sobeys to continue operating his Fonthill franchise.

In a statement released Tuesday, May 12, Sobeys Director of External Communications, Natasha Compton, said that the company took its investigation seriously, and that Kore and store staff were “incredibly collaborative and supportive throughout the process.”

Included with the corporate release was a statement

by Kore, who said that recent weeks had been “difficult and eye opening.”

“I want to apologize for any unintended consequences my actions caused early on in this pandemic and the resulting stress and hurt it may have caused the community.”

Kore received his positive test result on Monday, April 20. Upon learning the news from Sobeys HR staff on site, employees upset

by Kore’s continued attendance at work while visibly ill contacted the Voice on Wednesday, April 22. Public reaction to the story was overwhelmingly critical of Kore and Sobeys. By midday Thursday, April 23, the company announced that Kore was suspended from managing the store pending the outcome of an internal investigation, and that the location would be closed overnight for a “deep cleaning.”

Kore did not respond to multiple media requests for comment before or after the original story was published.

On Sunday, April 26, Kore broke his silence, emailing several media outlets a statement asserting that

he would “never take a risk with my health, the health of my wife, employees or colleagues at Town Hall,” and criticized the Town of Pelham’s handling of his diagnosis.

Kore added that he had been following the province's self-assessment guidelines, asserting that they showed he didn't "qualify" for a test. However, Kore's symptoms, including a cough and a

On March 23, Kore was recorded on video exhibiting symptoms during a Pelham Town Council meeting.

Absent from his April 26 comments was any apparent contrition regarding his conduct. Kore’s latest statement takes a markedly different tone.

“I now realize that some of my decisions, and the optics around them, were imperfect and I am very sorry for this,” he said.

“Over these past few weeks I have gained some difficult but necessary lessons that I will carry with me. I have learned from this experience and I am committed to this community more than ever. I will work hard to gain back your confidence and trust.”

In her statement, Sobeys spokesperson Natasha Compton said that "Ron Kore would like to share

the attached public apology and regrets coming to work while experiencing flu-like symptoms," asserting that the Fonthill store had “adhered to all proper cleaning and sanitization standards,” and said that the company had not had any reported cases of other employees testing positive for the coronavirus.

“Ron has been a devoted, contributing member of the Pelham community for the last 30 years and has contributed greatly to an incredible amount [of] local causes. We have received an outpouring of messages from the local community, sharing their support for Ron as an outstanding member of the community.”

Calling it an “honour and privilege to serve Pelham,” Kore added that as a local resident and small business owner, he had “witnessed first-hand what an incredible community this is and I am proud to call it home.”

On April 14, the day after Councillor Mike Ciolfi died, Kore requested an indefinite leave of absence from Pelham Town Council. Ciolfi and Kore sat approximately eight feet apart at the March 23 council meeting. Ciolfi, and two senior Town staff present in the room that evening, also later tested positive for COVID-19.

Kore did not reply to a request for comment regarding his intended return date to his municipal duties.

I

t is with great hope for all and fervent prayers for many that the COVID-19 pandemic will soon end. Everyone holds the earnest expectation that medical researchers will soon be successful in developing a vaccine that will protect from this vile virus. However, health experts warn that antiviral vaccine development can take a year or more. It would then take more months to produce needed quantities and implement a vaccination protocol. These scientists point out that this virus is ‘novel,’ meaning it is a unique strain and has a number of unfamiliar characteristics within the genre of coronavirus diseases.

Following this pandemic and as the world’s societies attempt to establish some level of pre-pandemic normalcy, there will be many lessons to be learned from this dreadful period. Certainly, these lessons come at great costs in societal and financial terms.

While putting aside the financial costs for another time, one of the lessons learned could be to do with the caring and concerns for seniors.

There are many for-profit residences for se-

niors whose families can afford these facilities which can be expensive and out of reach for many. Generally speaking, such residences have healthy balance sheets and are well-staffed, albeit with workers on the low end of the wage scale.

On the other hand, the notfor-profit senior residences operated by charitable organizations and lower tier governments are chronically and unwholesomely underfunded and consequently understaffed. Years of budget cuts for senior residences should be seen as unconscionable rather than good management. Care for our seniors should be seamlessly integrated with our healthcare system, which coincidentally, is widely known to be gravely underfunded, but apparently with little corrective action to resolve that specific societal shortfall.

How it is that advocates for seniors and those promoting better healthcare funding have not coalesced and effectively pressured governments to rectify such serious societal shortcomings is beyond explanation.

high percentage of these virus-related deaths were residents of senior homes.

It is true that some of these victims may have had other underlying health issues that exacerbated that death rate. However, that does not preclude the reality that this disease invaded many of these homes with near reckless abandon. The facilities could not adequately protect the residents from their primary cause of death. That could suggest, among other factors, that the designs and practices of these facilities need be reconsidered.

And so, when the end of this pandemic nears, hopefully one of the lessons learned is that the under-funding of the health care system and senior care facilities results in serious detrimental consequences.

Surely, the electorate does not wish to see those needing hospital care and our seniors suffer from the consequences of continual under-funding.

Perhaps it is time for our societal and fiscal values to be re-examined. Those needing hospital care and care in their senior years should be among the highest of priorities. That appears to many to be ethically, morally and just downright proper. ♦

Front-line workers still need PPE I am writing to the newspaper in the hope that the public will hear my daughter’s story, and someone will be able to help her and all of the PSWs working without being supplied the proper protection.

I have heard today that a fourth PSW has died from COVID-19, and it worries me sick knowing that my daughter Kimberly could be next.

She had her second kidney transplant in March, 2015. Unfortunately the kidney she received had a virus called CMV, and in the fall of 2017 we almost lost her. CMV is a virus that does not leave the body once a

person is infected. As a result, her immune system is very compromised. For this reason, she has been advised by her doctors not to go to work right now, BUT she feels she's needed more now then ever. Her doctors have told her if she feels she has to work, then not to work in nursing homes or hospitals. Therefore, she goes into the homes of the elderly, and provides the care they need. She is considered a contract worker, and therefore the agency that provides her with her contacts cannot help her.

OPINION Calls for more understanding, less conflict, during pandemic It has been said that making proactive health decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic as it unfolds is like building a plane while it is in flight with all the passengers onboard. We have never experienced an event like this. The stress on society is immeasurable. The worry list easily runs the alphabet A to Z and back again. Our responses, verbal or gestured, to everyone around us are affected by this stress. The receiver of our message is also under the same stress sometimes making listening and clearly understanding the message difficult. Technology has also changed our interactions. Gone are the days where we could comment or make a quick decision— and if it was the right one based on all the information available at the time, great!

But if it was the wrong decision or comment by the time it surfaced most people forgot about its context and you had lots of time to come up with a good excuse.

Now opinions and decisions are processed immediately and between social media and the cellphone, almost everyone is aware of it before you can finish a Tim Horton’s coffee. The loss of Mike Ciolfi is such a shock. Our hearts go out to his family. The GriefShare. org workbook lists 157 common responses just to grief, not including the pandemic!

This is the perfect storm to create stress, hopelessness and anger. It is hard, but we need to be proactive in thought and action to help each other get to the new normal.

Samuel Johnson said “He who has so little knowledge of human nature as to seek happiness by changing anything but his own disposition will waste his life in fruitless efforts.”

The Town Council, Mayor, and Town staff are all continuing to build the plane during its flight to a destination unknown to us at this time. The Mayor and council we elected has over 200 years combined living experience in Pelham. Two councillors are Citizen of the Year recipients. One of the two has worked 41 years in financial institutions and has a good understanding of financial statements, budgeting, human resources, etc. He holds a degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies with a Business Option.

The other Citizen of the Year worked for Loblaws for nearly 30 years before taking over his own franchise in 2009. He also worked with the PC Children Charity, and he has

since sat on the board of Pelham Cares. One councillor has worked for two levels of government, a board of education and owned a successful local business for 30 years. Another councillor is a former Emergency Management and Preparedness Advisor

It is hard, but we need to be proactive in thought and action to help each other get to the new normal

with the Ministry of Transportation. She is trained to consider the “before, during and after” of an event or disaster and employ her good communications skills to deal with the many stakeholders as part of the process before plans can be implemented. One councillor is a retired Professional Engineer, who rose to Plant Manager at Foster Wheeler in St. Catharines and also worked on international projects for the company.

This council’s leader graduated in the top of his class at the “University of Adversity.” There he learned to adapt to changing conditions and learned about life and economics by doing so.

He said, “It’s different than collecting a regular paycheque—if the farm doesn’t make any money, then you don’t make any money.” He is honest and hardworking.

This whole council has only one goal and that is to make a difference and serve the taxpayers of Pelham to the best of their ability. I believe that is what they are continuing to do through this unprecedented pandemic and I thank them for that. I am glad my grandchildren are too young to read and understand the turbulent news and people’s reactions recorded in many sources of media.

I can’t honestly believe that if Ron Kore thought he was putting anyone at risk by attending a council meeting or his place of work that he would have intentionally done that.

He was just being himself, honest and hardworking, dedicated to serving his customers, concerned about employees, dealing with angry customers because

I am hoping that in reaching out to the Voice, people will become aware of the risks PSWs are taking, and can help them with the supplies they need at this very stressful time.

The Voice, our local paper which promotes our Pelham businesses, is also working hard as a trusted platform for information, a sounding board, a lighthouse for citizen fairness and feedback. The Voice is the gatekeeper of our community.

Who would have believed that Greyhound Canada suspended all bus routes in Canada due to COVID-19 since demand has plunged by 95% during the pandemic. The Toronto Transit Commission laid off 1200 workers. The Canadian National Exhibition, founded in 1879, is cancelled for the first time since World War II. Every sporting event has been impacted along with every business or food and beverage service affiliated with them. Schools temporarily closed and so many other businesses and services.

There will be adjustments in our lives to the “new normal.” We need to try to be proactive and positive in our outlook as we march ahead. There are books about how Viktor Frankl, an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, survived Auschwitz, or other books like the “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” by Stephen R. Covey, to name a couple, as helpful resources.

Slowly, the town starts to reopen

J

ust as last week’s column visited the not too distant past, this column, while also dealing in the past, deals with events which have occurred in the last eight weeks. The residents of this town can be justifiably proud of the performance of its municipal staff and council. In these difficult times, Pelham achieved numerous firsts on several fronts.

We were the first municipality to pass its delegation-during-an -emergency bylaw; the first municipality to consider playground closure; the first to adopt standard operating procedures for landscapers, which allowed them to do basic yard work; and the first municipality to publish a set of criteria for those wishing to hold a yard sale.

As stated in an earlier column, the Town’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) met five times a week at the outset of this pandemic, but has recently scaled back to three times a week. The members of the EOC are the members of the Town’s Senior Leadership Team plus other staff members, as follows: Operations Commander, Fire

Chief Bob L y m b u r n e r, CAO David Cribbs, Planning Director Barb Wiens, Clerk Nancy Bozzato, Marvin Junkin Treasurer Teresa Quinlin, Recreation Director Vickie vanRavenswaay, Public Works Director Jason Marr, Manager of Public Works Ryan Cook, Communications Specialist Marc MacDonald, and acting Library CEO Amy Guilmette. I have made it a priority to sit in on these meetings, missing perhaps three because of other commitments. Let me assure you that this group has kept this community as safe as any other community in Canada, with all decisions being based on one criterion—the safety of the town’s residents.

Another fact that I am proud of is that our bylaw enforcement team has not handed out one ticket related to the pandemic, instead relying on educating and communicating with any offenders, and receiving compliance through these avenues.

Federal gun ban is both unneeded and unproductive There has been a lot of talk lately about PM Trudeau’s “assault rifle ban.” The words he, Minister Blair and Deputy PM Freeland all used, in the shadow of the horrific act carried out by a madman in Nova Scotia, tugged at us emotionally but, in reality, didn’t contain a lot of truth and have already begun to impact law-abiding Canadians.

Please allow me to explain.

The term “military-style assault rifle," used by PM Trudeau and Minister Blair has no legal definition. But their repeated use of the phrase “designed to kill the largest amount of people in the shortest period of time” more suitably describes automatic military rifles which were banned in Canada way back in 1979. The rifles he banned this time, though scary looking to some, are actually sporting rifles that would not interest the military at all and are more suitable for putting holes in paper targets. Add to this, existing law already prohibits magazines that hold more than 5 rounds (bullets) in Canada.

“You don’t need an AR15 to take down a deer,” he said repeatedly. The truth is that existing regulations say that an AR15 cannot be used legally to hunt in Canada.

And it’s certainly not powerful enough, nor are the bullets it uses large enough, for that purpose.

We also heard about “taking guns off the streets.” But banning ownership of legal firearms from legal, law-abiding sportsmen does nothing to make “the streets” safer. Guns used on the street, and those used by the Portapique killer

(who was not a legal firearm owner), are almost exclusively illegal guns, usually smuggled from the US. Please don’t be misled by talk from the USA. Canadian firearm ownership is strictly controlled in every way by the RCMP and our gun crimes are not on the rise beyond gang violence.

Legal gun owners in Canada are only granted a license after considerable cost and extensive RCMP-approved training (passing grade is 80%), both written and practical, in the different types of firearms, ammunition, safe handling, storage and transportation.

Background checks are performed, including interviews with spouses, previous spouses and references, and questions about employment terminations, etc. The entire process usually takes six-to-eight months. Licensees also undergo what’s known as Continuous Eligibility Screening. Every single day, the police database (CPIC) is checked for every license holder to ensure they’re still worthy of holding a license.

And bringing a firearm home from a gun store takes weeks while eligibility screening once again takes place and the proper permits and registration documents are produced.

Authorization to transport restricted firearms involve a locked case, a trigger lock, the trunk of a locked vehicle, and by way of a direct route from home to the range or gunsmith and back. Legal owners are not driving “around” with

guns in their car.

But most concerning to all Canadians about the recent ban by our Prime Minister is that he did this without parliamentary oversight.

There was no debate, no vote in parliament. He used an Order In Council, a vehicle intended to save parliament from having to reconvene to fix typos or omissions in

already passed bills. This “regulation change” bypassed the elected officials of all parties from across our great nation.

Although a two-year amnesty period has been granted, thousands of our most legally vetted citizens became instant criminals by this Order in Council.

Let’s talk about statistics. 2013 is used as a reference point repeatedly in the anti-gun rhetoric. We hear “on the rise since 2013,” etc. But 2013 was a statistical anomaly. No one knows why it was an unusually crime-free year, but comparing to an anomaly doesn’t show that

crimes with guns is actually on the rise.

Think of it this way. Statistically speaking, violent crimes make up 20% of overall crime. Within the 20%, firearms are only used in 3% of violent crimes. This means that 0.6% of overall crime is with a firearm.

In 2018, there were 651 homicides committed in Canada. Of these, 249 were with a firearm, 183 were with a knife, and 155 were with bare hands. Basically 61% of homicides were non-firearm-related.

To go further, of these 249 homicides, 157 were gang related (94% of gang homicides were with a firearm, so 147 with a firearm).

This means that 102 homicides in Canada were committed by nongang members (StatsCan doesn’t break it down to people with a criminal background). This is 102 non-gang members in a population of over 37 million. That's a percentage of 0.00028%, or about one ten-thousandth of a percent. This is the best-case scenario banning guns does, assuming the 102 don’t use one of the other more popular methods for homicide.

This change by the Prime Minister punishes the 2.18 million legally vetted and licensed gun owners in Canada which have not committed a single crime because of crimes committed by that 0.00028% of the population.

People have given their lives for freedom and a democratic Canada.

Freedom to choose the pastimes in which we participate. And to those public safety minded people who

A parable to keep us grounded I am so tired of having to read about all of the needless political misfirings at Town Hall. Pelham can be better than that—we have a good Mayor. You know this pandemic brings out the best and worst in people.

I look at this situation as a time to take a step back and see what life was like before the big box stores and congestion on the highways.

Those that continue to be rude and selfish will always be that way—like the ones who impatiently honk at someone while waiting in line at the drive-through at Tim's— or unselfish, and do other things, like supporting Pelham Cares and buying from the local farmer on the side of the road who can't sell his produce or flowers elsewhere because of the pandemic.

As this province opens back up cautiously, I would like to think that some of us will remember this throwback in time. But as commuters hit the highways and travellers crowd the airports again, many will forget and will only treat this period in 2020 as an inconvenience.

Someone sent me this story this week. I share with the paper as something positive at this time of stress.

Many police agencies from coast to coast are speaking out and are sharing their opinions that this gun ban will do nothing to reduce crime in Canada except to divert important funds from Gangs and Guns initiatives, mental health help and domestic violence prevention.

If the Federal Government institutes a “buy back” program, the cost could be half a billion dollars to only improve the perception of public safety while doing nothing to save lives.

I’ll close by saying that legal firearm owners want a safer Canada too. And so do the approximately 48,000 people working in the shooting sports industry in Canada. To confiscate legally acquired property that is used, transported and stored with the utmost safety considerations is just not fair. And it will literally do nothing to stop horrific crimes like those in Nova Scotia.

And for the record, I’m a legal gun owner, a grandfather, a husband, a volunteer, a politically active voter, a Pelham resident, and if I lived next door to you, you just might like me.

I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes, and I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily appraising

a basket of freshly picked green peas.

I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to me.

“Hello Barry, how are you today?”

“Hello, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank you. Just admirin' them peas. They sure look good.”

“They are good, Barry.

How's your ma?”

“Fine. Getting stronger all-a-the time.”

“Good. Anything I can help you with?”

“No, sir. Just admirin' them peas.”

“Would you like to take some home?” asked Mr. Miller.

“No, sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with.”

“Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?”

“All I got’s is my prize marble here.”

“Is that right? Let me see it,” said Miller.

“Here. She's a dandy.”

“I can see that. Mmm. Only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?”

“Not ‘zackley but almost.”

“Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble.”

“Sure will. Thanks, Mr. Miller.”

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over

to help me. With a smile she said there were two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances.

“Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever.

When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store.”

I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado, but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.

Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died. They were having his visitation that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them.

Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.

Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts...all very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket.

Shooting sports advocates fire back against gun ban Anti-ban petition gathers 200,000 signatures, but recent polls show Canadians want more, not less gun control

We were told it was coming.

During last fall’s election campaign, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal minority government promised to ban military-style long guns, often referred to in the media as “assault rifles.” They also proposed allowing municipalities to prohibit handguns, and implementing more restrictive laws in an effort to limit criminal access to firearms.

The Globe and Mail reported back in January that during a cabinet retreat in Winnipeg, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair detailed

his multi-step process of a new gun control strategy. The first stage involved banning the sale of assault rifles, with a buy-back program to follow at a later date.

Political insiders assert that Trudeau was ready to enact this campaign months ago, before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the legislative agenda.

On April 18-19, a deranged man in Nova Scotia massacred 22 people in the single largest mass murder in Canadian history. The lunatic used pistols and rifles in the commission of his horrendous act, but possessed no license to own them. A recent

Pelham Transit is operating as a Dial-a-Ride service until further notice. Dial-a-ride service is available 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The Town of Pelham discourages having garage and yard sales at this time, though they are permitted. If you are planning on having a garage or yard sale within the Town of Pelham please be responsible.

Dial-a-Ride is a door-to-door transit service that picks up and drops off anywhere within Pelham boundaries and to the Seaway Mall/Niagara College in Welland. Town to shut-in retirees: pick up the phone Seniors Centre Without Walls now in action

Julie Cook, Recreation, Culture, and Wellness Programmer for the Town of Pelham, refers to it as a “seniors centre from the comfort of one's home.” It's a free dial-up program with group activities and presentations designed for the 60plus crowd.

Why a phone connection, rather than a live online event via Skype or Zoom?

“We have a lot of seniors that are not literate when it comes to computers. All they need is the telephone to be able to participate, and everybody has one of those,” said Cook.

Topics include health related information and conversations which connect seniors with their peers.

Mindfulness with Susan Buckingham, Active Well-Being with Eleanor Stasiw, and Party Line Conversation Circles with Col-

leen Kenyon are just three of the scheduled conversations. Fun Facts, Good News, Table Topics, and Discussion Group are also slated forums, allowing seniors to listen, learn, and share.

The schedule is already underway, with group conversations available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays throughout the month of May. Cook noted that other municipalities are already using this seniors platform with success.

Cook expects approximately 15 to 20 participants per session. Given the current state of social and emotional isolation for many seniors, she believes this is an important avenue through which they can connect with their peers, and even make new friendships.

“The group facilitators and doing this out of the goodness their hearts.

There's no cost involved to seniors who join in,” said Cook.

A code of conduct is in place for the sessions. Facilitators and guest speakers direct the groups, and insist upon respectful dialogue and an allowance for all participants to speak, with no one person dominating the conversations. The expectation is that all seniors will politely acknowledge the cultures and life experiences of others.

“We’d like the seniors to call in ahead of time to register online,” said Cook.

“Because some of these programs are interactive, we have to control the numbers that are on the line when it comes to an interactive conversation.”

community’s needs. At the same time, details and updates related to COVID-19 were emerging and changing rapidly. I thought I was doing the right thing and taking the precautions necessary based on my interpretation of the information I had and the advice I was getting. However, I now realize that some of my decisions, and the optics around them, were imperfect and I am very sorry for this.

Two Pelhamites working the front lines...of sorts Grocery, medical manufacturing more than essential

Adam Metz has been used to dealing with hassles at the Canada-U.S. border for years. The native Buffalonian lives in Fonthill with his Canadian wife, Debi, but commutes five days a week to work in the Queen City.

In normal times, the Peace Bridge is a perfect storm of horrendously outdated infrastructure, gridlock and bureaucracy.

But normal times these ain’t.

With the border closed to

most travel, Metz has been designated as “essential” to cross back and forth under the federal guidelines of both countries.

The reason: Metz’s company, Materion, produces metallic parts used in medical equipment such as ventilators.

“It’s weird,” he said of the non-existent traffic on the Peace Bridge, and empty customs stalls. “Aside from a few trucks, it’s me, that’s it.

Metz has a letter he carries

with him from his employer to show customs agents if asked.

“Essential business under the March 18, 2020 State of New York Executive Order No. 202.6,” it reads in part.

“As such, you are permitted to engage in essential travel.”

Metz says that sometimes he’s asked to show it, and sometimes he’s not. Part of that could be that many of the border agents recognize him now. On the way back into Canada however, he’s

noted that some of the more trivial bureaucratic questions from normal times still exist.

“They’re still asking if I have citrus [fruit],” he said.

“You don’t want to bring that in right now.”

Metz guesses about half the agents on either side are wearing masks at any given time he crosses, but he’s noted that they all appear younger since the pandemic began.

He describes the streets of Buffalo as “dead,” and said

the nature of his manufacturing job limits close contact to some degree.

“We wear gloves a lot at work anyways,” he said.

“And our lunchroom, they took all the chairs out, so there’s only two per table.”

Adam’s wife, Debi, meanwhile, works at Zehr’s on Niagara Street in Welland.

In a job even more frontline that Adam’s, she says that the supermarket appears to have taken about every precaution they can.

People want to get back to their normal life, and that’s not going to happen soon

“It’s like a sterile hospital,” she said, adding that the store is limiting customers to 30 at a time, with all aisles changed to one-way only. When she works cash, Metz is behind a shield and is frequently using hand sanitizer. Zehr’s is encouraging grocery pickup through their online system, but she estimates her store is already averaging 175 orders a day — which is leading to some delays.

Aside from some frustrated customers, Debi says she hasn’t seen or heard of any overly-problematic behaviour yet.

“You look at people in a whole different way,” she said. “There is impatience, but people want to get back to their normal life, and that’s not going to happen soon.”

Debi recently received a 15 percent raise, as parent company Loblaws and other national grocery chains recognized the essential, thankless work their employees were doing during the pandemic.

Told they were both currently helping form the backbone of public health and the economy in an unprecedented crisis, the Metzes shrugged it off.

“I don’t feel like it,” Adam said. “I just go into a factory.”

BEAM ME UP The 2021 Canada Games Host Society’s “Niagara Light of Hope” roadshow stopped in Pelham last Wednesday evening, the 11th such performance as it hit each of Niagara’s 12 municipalities, plus the Region. Contractor Production Service Industries Niagara (PSI) handled the tech, and General Manager of Production Jeremy Elliott said that their Pelham stop was one of the warmer ones during this unusually cool month. Eleven halogen lights, fed by seven 50 amp circuits (with electricity provided by their own generator), were directed straight up, combining to form a single shaft of light meant to symbolize hope, inspiration, and “the strength of our community,” according to PSI President Steven Vian. Three crew members handled the gear while Mayor Marvin Junkin, Pelham CAO David Cribbs, Regional Council Chair Jim Bradley, and Regional Councillor Diana Huson observed.

Welland arson arrest

On May 15, at approximately 9:20 AM, emergency services personnel responded to a report of a house fire on Afton Avenue near Lincoln Street East in

Welland. On arrival, a home was found to be engulfed in flames.

Welland Fire Services commenced battling the fire.

3 District – Welland uniform officers and detectives started an investigation into the cause of the fire. On November 17, 2019, 3 District Welland uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) were called to a report of disturbance in the area of Lincoln Street and Coventry Road in the City of Welland.

A 50-year-old man from Welland who had been involved in the disturbance died in hospital the following day. Since November 2019 detectives from the Homicide Unit have been investigating the circumstances of

FICTION Wish You Were Here

I

t was silly to panic over a postage stamp. Even a little worrying at her age. What did Matt say last time he was home? Life’s too short to sweat the nickels and dimes, Mum. The easy mantra of a free spirit, but still.

She’d always fretted over trivial things—a forgotten birthday, an overdue bill—and now a postage stamp threatened to spoil her Cape Wrath adventure.

Yes, she should have allowed more space on the card for a larger stamp, but she had already written the address before buying it.

It was a ridiculous size for a stamp, even if it was a special issue on the Queen’s ninetieth. An archived photo of Ma’am wearing a lemon coat and sponge cake hat, smiling in an open car beside Barack Obama, he waving to the crowd and happy as Larry.

She had the card with her now, and hoped to find a post office with normal stamps. But all she’d seen on the roller-coaster road from Ullapool were highland cattle and sheep, some isolated hill farms, and a gas station.

There would be nothing at Cape Wrath, though that was half the attraction of going there.

The other half was going it alone.

She could make it to the coast and back before dark, the car rental assured her, especially this far north with the long daylight hours. Angelika, the tour chaperone, approved her going.

Gems of the Highlands were headed for John O’Groats that morning—a touristy place that didn’t top her list of attractions, despite being at the top of the country. On the way, they were to stop at castle Mey, but that didn’t appeal either. It was too soon after Urquhart for another castle, especially a lived-in one. She always hung back while the group poked around inside any castle where the family still resided. When she put her own house on the market after Clayton died she disliked having

to vacate her home on open days so strangers could traipse through her rooms gawking at family photos and personal effects.

Today she had cut loose from her mirthless tour companions to see Cape Wrath. The name made her think of November storms pounding a bleak coastline.

Driving north on the empty road, she reckoned the chances of finding a post office were, like the landscape now, more remote than ever.

The card must arrive home before she did. To show up ahead of one’s postcard was slipshod. Life was about shipshape and Bristol fashion, as her dear father used to say. A place for everything, ma wee Gracey, and everything in its place. And due dates observed. She hadn’t been a university librarian for nothing.

The card was perfect. She found it in the gift shop at Urquhart Castle—a striking photo of the spectacular ruins etched against the

deep blue of Loch Ness under a moonstone sky. Liz and Ken would be pleased to imagine her touring the castles of Scotland in glorious weather—their retirement gift to her.

A bus tour was never her choice, but Urquhart had stirred something, no question.

For starters, the weather was anything but glorious. She had stood spellbound on the hill above the ruins watching a magnificent storm move up Loch Ness. Its dark sleeves hung like a weeping cypress, shrouding the hills and blackening the waters as it approached.

The group dashed inside the visitors’ centre when they felt the first fat drops; but Grace zipped up her anorak, yanked the hood over her head and descended the wooden staircase to the castle. The storm soon engulfed the ruins, lending the scene a melancholy aspect as she picked her way along the broken walls. It felt oddly ex-

On the bus afterwards, Myra Gladstone said to her, “You look like a drowned rat, Grace. Did no one ever tell you to come in out of the rain?” Then she looked around, smirking at the others.

Myra was quick to establish herself as the group’s mother hen during the meet-and-greet in the lounge at Toronto International.

Grace could imagine her at school, haranguing the meek and uncertain, making life miserable for anyone who resisted her will. Her husband, a tall, groomed man with a sweep of white hair and a rueful expression, had been something in hedge funds. Myra assured everyone they had done very well thank you.

The rest were a prickly lot, mostly. The way they one-upped each other bragging about their grandchildren—little prodigies, every one—and their own busybusy social lives, the charities

they quilted and biked and baked for now they were retired.

Smartphones would come out, the photos stroked and tapped and shared, but the proud smiles tightened a little when it became someone else’s turn.

Their husbands stared out at the hills, mostly, or nodded off in their seats. A coach tour wouldn’t have been Clayton’s cup of tea either.

Grace sat with Inara Di Franco, because she too liked to gaze out at the still lochs and the hills yellowed bright with gorse.

Among challenging types like Myra Gladstone, Grace made herself disappear, as she did this morning, slipping away to Cape Wrath.

Anyone seen Grace since breakfast? Inara Di Franco would ask, and Angelika would tell them. She wouldn’t be missed.

Making herself invisible was a skill she acquired during her forty-year marriage to Clayton. Invisible but never idle. Something else she got from her father.

She did the lion’s share of raising Liz and Matt while working full-time at the McLuhan Library.

Clayton, for his part, paid the hefty school fees from his substantial salary. He flew business class across the country, selling technology and riding high on back-slapping camaraderie at executive retreats and marketing summits. He cut a dashing figure with his expensive suits and easy charm, but those hand-made Italian shoes could run roughshod over his competitors—and poor Matt as well, who seemed to disappoint his father whatever he did.

Clayton wasn’t all that impressed by Grace’s choice of career either, and once joked that her own shelf life would soon expire.

She wondered if the marriage was in trouble, but he meant libraries.

“Books are done, Grace. It’s screen, not page anymore. Unless you upgrade you’ll be left behind.”

I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10) In the New Testament,

A 2019 report prepared by Statistics Canada indicated that two thirds of firearm-related violent crime in urban cities involved handguns. It further showed that in 2017, only three percent of violent crime in this country involved a firearm.

Many gun owners believe that the government’s decision is not about safety, or crime reduction. It is simply a political exercise to impress “progressive” voters with the appearance that the government is addressing gun violence. In response, they have pushed back with a number of national online petitions, in which they demand that the government repeal its gun ban.

Members of parliament from Western Canada, including Glen Motz, Todd Doherty, and Michelle Rempel Garner have led the charge, filing e-Petitions in the House of Commons. To date, one petition has received almost 200,000 signatures of support, making it the largest e-petition in Canadian history.

Speaking to the Prairie Post newspaper, Motz (a former police officer) said, “Canadians want action on crime, gangs, and illegal firearms. Instead of taking action against criminals, the Liberal government is once again targeting law-abiding Canadians with no criminal history.”

Motz maintains that the Order-in-Council punishes hunters, farmers and sport shooters, and will cost the economy hundreds of millions of dollars in lost sales and jobs, while having no impact on public safety.

“It is harder to go after criminals and illegally trafficked firearms, but that’s what a responsible government would do,” said Motz.

The speed and strength of the petition against the ban belies the apparent mood of the Canadian public, as demonstrated in an Angus Reid opinion poll released earlier this month, which showed an overwhelming majority — nearly fourin-five — support a complete prohibition on civilian possession of the types of weapons affected by the ban.

Significantly, two-thirds (65%) strongly support such a move. About half of current gun owners oppose the ban (55%), while two in three Canadians favour a handgun ban as well. Paradoxically, nearly half of the survey respondents consider current gun control laws either too strict (13%) or about right (34%).

In an unscientific poll conducted among paid Voice members last week (see story on page 2), 53% responded that the government’s ban does not go far enough, while an overwhelming majority of 71% disagreed that all firearms should be banned in Canada.

The term "assault rifle" has no legal definition in Canada, and the Firearms Act also does not currently classify firearms as "military-style.” Although the now-prohibited rifles bear a physical resemblance to true military battle rifles

The Voice, May 20, 2020 (which were banned in 1978 in Canada) that are capable of fully-automatic fire, the banned guns are semi-automatic in design. One trigger pull fires one bullet. And the banned rifles are limited to magazines holding five rounds, just like all other rifles allowed in this country used for hunting or marksmanship.

The 30-round magazines popular in Hollywood action movies are available in the USA, but are banned in Canada.

Though generally pleased with the assault rifle ban,

some gun control advocates are already voicing concern about the government allowing current owners to keep their banned guns. One is Heidi Rathjen, a graduate of École Polytechnique in Montreal — scene of the Montreal massacre of 1989 — and coordinator of Poly Remembers, a gun control group.

“Allowing grandfathered weapons is a huge concession to the gun lobby. In terms of public safety benefits, there is a world of difference between a total ban and a partial ban. A non-mandatory buy-back program could mean that it will take generations to get these weapons off our streets and out of our communities,” Rathjen said in a Poly Remembers press release. "But the Liberal government has finally delivered on its gun control promise, and we hope Mr. Trudeau will display the same political courage as the government proceeds with reform to make such a ban permanent."

Another long-time gun control advocate, Coalition for Gun Control president and Ryerson University professor Wendy Cukier, who grew up in St. Catharines, told the Prince Edward Island Guardian newspaper that the assault weapons ban is overdue.

"It's been a long wait. This is a milestone for Canada and an important step forward.”

Cukier said that while the assault weapon ban is a good first step, a ban on handguns is also necessary, as they are frequently used by criminals, and factor prominently in domestic violence.

“Handguns are not used in hunting. Handguns are not used by farmers. Handguns are used by target shooters and collectors. And frankly, most Canadians agree that the risk outweighs the utility. We're sorry that some people enjoy target shooting.

It's a nice hobby, but it's not worth putting our children's lives at risk,” said Cukier.

Conservative Niagara West MP Dean Allison did not mince words about the ban.

“The Order-In-Council is an effort to subvert the

democratic process, and it discriminates against those who are law abiding,” he said. “We need to focus on the influx of illegal firearms being smuggled across the border, and vicious street gangs, and the fact that there is a revolving door allowing violent repeat offenders back on the street, having plea bargained to lesser charges.

Criminals will not register their guns, or participate in a buyback program. And there are mental health and addiction components to the issue of gun violence as well.”

Pro-gun supporters here in Niagara have viewed the announcement with disdain.

Gerry Gamble, an executive member of two gun clubs in the area, and an avid spokesman for the shooting sports community, told the Voice that the Order-In-Council was “draconian,” and a guarantee that non-compliance is going to be widespread.

“Law-abiding gun owners are sick and tired of being the convenient scapegoat every time there is a high-profile gun crime committed by some miscreant who never followed any of the rules to which legitimate gun owners have to adhere,” said Gamble.

Pelham resident Ray Boilard has been a hunter for 40 years, and is an active member of Silverdale Gun Club in St. Anns as well as the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH).

He doesn’t own one of the banned rifles, but feels the Order-In-Council is misguided.

“Urban dwellers, living in big cities like Toronto, they have little interest in shooting,” said Boilard. “All they know about guns is that when they open the newspaper, somebody has been killed by one. They just think the fewer guns the better. My response is that it’s possible to enjoy your sport safely and not endanger anybody. In my experience, gun enthusiasts tend to very careful in their handling of firearms, and their safe storage.”

The Maple Leaf Marksmen, Rifle, and Revolver Club on Eleventh Street in Lincoln has a membership of about 275, with a third from Pelham. Club president John Kellaway feels the money spent on firearm ban and buyback programs would be better directed to greater vigilance at the border.

“The vast majority of the illegal guns used in robberies and homicides are coming in from the States. The government needs to make that a priority,” Kellaway said.

Reporting by the CBC supports Kellaway’s statement, noting that some 70% of illegal guns in Canada used in the commission of crimes — mainly handguns —are sourced in the US. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) agents seized 647 firearms in 2019, a number that has been declining over the last three fiscal years.

Smugglers are creative, hiding weapons in vehicle gas tanks and hidden panels in freight trucks.

Tim was born in Midland and will be missed by many extended family members and friends.

Tim delivered water for many years with Hilltop, then became owner and driver of Niagara Water.

We will remember him for his passion for animals, he loved his cats and rescue dachshund dog “Rudy”.

“The general public doesn’t realize the training courses, security measures, and background checks that are required of legal gun owners,” Christie said. “There's no way on the face of this earth that they're ever going to stop the shootings and murders that occur in major cities by banning firearms.

They're not stolen from private collections as some people would have you believe... that is extremely rare.”

Paul Justus sits on the executive boards of two Niagara gun clubs, and is candid about how he would address the issue.

“My personal view is that the existing laws in Canada are sufficient, that we just need to enforce them. The problem I have is reading about criminals who smuggle guns and commit crimes with firearms, only to be given lenient sentences by sympathetic judges. These felons are soon back on the street, and it’s business as usual.”

A dissenting local voice is Dave Nicholson, of Fonthill, who readily acknowledges that he is not a gun expert.

“My criticism regarding these assault rifles and handguns is that it’s just too easy to kill somebody, either on purpose or accidentally, when they are available.

The statistics show a lot of suicides by guns as well. You read in the newspaper of innocent children getting their

hands on a pistol, and killing themselves or shooting someone else. These are totally preventable situations,” said Nicholson.

While he doesn’t think that there's anything fundamentally wrong with shooting as a sport, he thinks that Canadians could be “weaned off” assault rifles and handguns without too much trouble, and referenced countries like Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, which have all imposed firearm restrictions in recent years.

Gun control is clearly an emotional issue for Canadians. Let us hope that we never descend to the level of the ugly spectacle in Michigan recently, where groups of camo-clad, gun-toting individuals (referenced by one reporter as “ammosexuals”) appeared on the steps of the state legislature to persuade their local politicians into relaxing social distancing regulations, and allowing the economy to return to its pre-pandemic state. They perhaps see themselves as heroes battling an impending apocalypse, but in reality they are simply scaring people in an already arduous time, and doing democracy a huge disservice in the bargain.

Margaret grew up in St. Catharines and her first job was at Bell as a switchboard operator which enhanced her social and communication skills. Loving music and dancing, she met Wallace at a dance in Port Dalhousie. They married and worked hard on their farm, Greenview Farms.

They raised 7 children together. Margaret was a great cook, baker, and made canning and preserving any fruit or vegetable look so easy. Family was most important to Margaret. She loved the family gatherings for all the special occasions and always looked forward to the next get together.

Margaret was an avid euchre player and a member of the Women’s Institute. Her kind, gentle and outgoing nature will be missed by all.

A very special thank you to Dr. Pringle and Dr. Gruber for all the excellent care over the many years and to Cobblestone Gardens (her second home) for the great care she received for the past 5 years. Fenwick goalie selected by OHL team Ben Bonisteel chosen by Barrie in under-18 draft

Early April brought an unexpected surprise for 16-year-old Fenwick native Ben Bonisteel.

The 6-foot-3, 201-pound goalie was selected in the first round, ninth overall by the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League’s Under-18 Priority Selection.

The Grade 11 student at E. L. Crossley and his advisor spoke to a number of OHL teams before the draft but none had said it was definitely selecting him.

“Nothing was guaranteed so I was super excited to see my name across the board.”

Bonisteel, his parents, Gord and Veronica, and sister, Emily, followed the draft on YouTube and heard the Barrie Colts go to the microphone and call his name.

“There was dead silence and then we could hear them pick up the mic,” he said. “I kind of looked at my dad, we were all pretty excited and there were a lot of emotions coming out.”

Bonisteel was speechless in the moment.

“I hugged my family and it was a pretty special moment to share with all of them.”

The moment was in stark contrast to 2019, when Bonisteel wasn’t picked in the OHL Priority Selection.

“I tried not to get too excited because I had gotten some calls, but I didn’t want to set myself up for kind of a fall like last year,” he said. “It was great to see my name come up on the board after going undrafted last year.”

Bonisteel, who was the only local goalie among 16 goaltenders invited to the 2019 OHL Draft Combine, used last year’s snub as motivation.

“I wouldn’t change going undrafted last year for the world,” he said. “It turned out great and it gave me the kick in the ass I needed and the extra motivation.

I am keeping that chip on my shoulder this year going into my training now. The work never stops. It just gets more and more and I am super excited for the journey.”

He felt he made improvements in his play this season.

“I took big strides in my fitness level, losing a lot of weight over the past summer and past season and

Bonisteel, who lost 30 pounds in the last year, had a 1.49 goals-against average in 17 games for the Niagara North Stars this past season. As an affiliated player with the St. Catharines Falcons, he started and won one game, and practised with the squad for most of the season.

His time with the Falcons was most beneficial.

“It was a big deal because

early in the year I wasn’t sure who I was going to AP [affiliated player] with,” he said.

Early in the season, he received a call from the Falcons, who needed him on the bench for a game.

“I went to a few practices and from there the coaches and the organization were nothing but gold to me and told me that I could come out whenever I wanted,” he said. “Even though some of the practices I wouldn’t get the most shots, it would be an hour to spend on my movement and I think that

really helped my game.”

It certainly helped when he saw action at practice.

“Obviously, facing the harder and faster shots from even a few ex-OHL guys on the team really helped me transition back to midget and when I did play the game up with the Falcons.”

After the draft, Bonisteel spoke with Colts head coach Dale Hawerchuk and general manager Jason Ford.

“They said that they were excited to get me with their pick, they laid out some next steps for me and wished me luck in my training leading

up to the camp,” he said.

Those next steps are to: stay fit during the COVID-19 pandemic and improve his fitness level; get better at owning his crease and being as mobile as possible; and reading the play, which will help him with puck handling and every aspect of the game.

If the world gets back to normal, Bonisteel would attend Barrie’s rookie camp in June with the hope of earning an invitation to the main camp. If not, the main camp would be his first time on the ice for the Colts.

CO-CHAMPS Back in mid April, the Pelham Minor Hockey Baron Roofing Bantam BB team was awarded the title of co-champions by the OMHA and were presented Red Hats, courtesy of the Egg Farmers of Ontario, for reaching the finals in their division. The team had a successful season, winning two tournaments and coming in second in the NDHL. After defeating the Thorold Blackhawks Bantam BB team in a tightly contested quarter final, the Panthers went on to sweep the Mount Brydges Cougars Bantam BB team in the semi-finals. The Panthers were scheduled to play Napanee in the finals before COVID-19 shut down minor hockey for the season. The team thanked their sponsor, as well as parents, spectators, PMHA, and the town of Pelham for their support over the past few months.

I’m going anyhow

T

he way I see it, Mother Nature is sitting on the fence these days when it comes to caring, nurturing and life-giving. She’s shown us a bit of tough love recently, with the California forest fires, Typhoon Hagibus, and Cyclone Idai.

Apparently we didn’t listen, so this spring she’s proved to the world she means business. And I respect her for it. She tried sending us Al Gore and Greta Thunberg, nice folks, but mostly preaching to the choir, so she brought us COVID-19 to catch our attention. If this is what it takes, who am I to question?

However, record cold temperatures and snow squalls the day before Mother’s Day, in Pelham? Now she’s just messing with us, playing games because she can.

And I simply wasn’t going to take it lying down.

You remember the day, two Saturdays ago. Normally, by six o’clock in the morning there’s always a blue jay or starling sitting on the bird feeder, staring at our kitchen window, squawking relentlessly for food. They know take out is still allowed in Ontario.

The morning in question, however, the jay, starling, cardinal and a fat grey squirrel were all lined

up on the roof of the feeder, shoulder to wing, complaining about the breakfast service, so I knew something unusual was in the air.

The tulips were limp with their flowers gazing at the ground dejectedly, like a Golden Retriever caught snatching an Arrowroot from a baby’s tiny hand.

The water in the bird-bath was frozen solid, wind was howling through the treetops, and the temperature was below zero.

The sun shone gloriously for 11 minutes, black nimbostratus clouds intermittently dropped snow and hail, and the temperature soared to a balmy 2C —all within an hour.

Screw it, I’m going anyhow.

My training schedule for May 9 reads: exercises, weights, and 80 kilometres on the bike.

I’ve

gained 2.724 kilograms since Justin and Doug’s “Just Stay Home” medley hit the charts, and a bit of snow isn’t going to stop me.

What are the options, really? Trickster Virtual Bridge with online strangers or download the BocceBall 3D app? Not going to happen.

When I carried my bike up the stairs out of the basement, my wife didn’t bat an eye, but I know she was thinking, “I’ve got to get Power of Attorney soon, he’s totally lost it.”

I pulled out the hamper of winter cycling gear I’d stashed away for the summer back in April, and a solitary tear rolled down my cheek as I sorted through it.

In the end, I put on every piece. I was dressed in more layers than a Betty Crocker tiramisu cake.

This was such a pain because you either have to

launder everything again after just one ride, or stuff the sweat-soaked gear back into the hamper and hope nothing incubates in it during the summer.

The plan was to drive to Wellandport, unload the bike, then ride west to check out some gravel roads I’d never ridden before until the required 80K distance had been met. On the drive to Wellandport, flags were struggling to stay attached to their poles, West Lincoln tumbleweed was flying across Canboro Road, and a brief blizzard just west of Boyle almost broke my resolve.

I heard a racket in the sky and looked up hoping to see the Snow Birds, but it was a flock of Canada geese headed south. The sun had emerged, and it was beautifully reflecting off all the little igloos the frogs had

built for shelter on the pond ice. There were whitecaps on the Welland River.

A small crowd formed as I unloaded my bicycle from its roof rack in the snow at Wellandport. Someone asked if I was Adam Shoalts working on a new book.

I rode north on Collver Road, then made the left onto Elcho into the wind.

It didn’t appear that social distancing on the bicycle was going to be an issue this day, so I eased off my mask and used it as a neck warmer. The going was a bit slow, but the sun shone brightly, so based on conventional athletic wisdom I knew I’d warm up soon. GodStrong his is probably a new word for you since I just made it up. It sounds a bit like the word “Godspell,” which is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “good story.” It became the name of a popular musical (based on the Gospel of Matthew) that appeared in 1971. The modern English word for “Godspell” is “Gospel” which simply means “Good News.”

We get the word “evangelical” from the Greek root-word “euangelion.”

An evangelical Christian is a Christ-follower who is Bible-believing and Gospel (Good News)-proclaiming.

And then we have the word “Godspeed.” When we say this to people, we are wishing them God’s protection on their journey. So, what about this new word “GodStrong”?

er “Strongs,” always sadly linked to tragedies involving loss of life. More recently, a “Nova Scotia Strong” donut was introduced at Tim Horton’s to raise funds for the families of the 22 people killed and three injured in the shocking shooting spree on April 18-19, 2020.

This term has been helpful and I’m sure a source of comfort, strength and hope for the mourners. God uses caring people to bring tangible comfort to those experiencing loss and grief. I’ve often seen this at funerals. It’s especially true and See FAITH LIFT Page 14

Boston Strong

Putting the word “Strong” after a city’s name seems to have started in Boston.

“Boston Strong” was the term coined to refer to the city of Boston’s recovery after the bombing of the Boston Marathon in 2013.

In 2017 came what was then described as “the worst mass shooting in U.S. history,” in Las Vegas, when 59 people died and more than 500 were injured. “Vegas Strong” followed.

A few months later came the Humboldt tragedy on April 6, 2018. A bus-load of Humboldt Broncos hockey players was T-boned at high speed by a tractor trailer. The tragic result was 16 fatalities and 13 serious injuries. “Humboldt Strong” (sometimes spelt as one word) was used to describe a charitable foundation set up to help the families affected. The term also meant that the local community was determined

The party emerged chattering from the canteen and walked up the rise to where she stood. Then everyone grew silent and gazed out to sea, surrendering to the emptiness.

Inevitably, the phones came out and selfies taken against the lighthouse.

Red Sox and the possum woman posed solemnly, his phone extended on a stick like he was toasting a marshmallow. The Nordic couple laughed when they looked at their photo. The elderly man aimed his camera at Dunnet Head, now luminous in a bright sun.

Grace hadn’t thought to bring hers.

Stepping away, she opened her purse and took out the postcard. She unfold-

When she let go, it seemed to hang for an instant as if uncertain what to do. Then a gust snatched it away and it vanished in the glare. Air mailed at last.

She smiled.

The possum woman looked away.

Eric suggested a photo before they drove back. Grace positioned herself between the elderly man and the girl with the musical tattoo. Eric took their email addresses so he could send them their Cape Wrath moment.

A turning point he’d told them.

On the ride back, half-listening to Eric talk about Orkney myths, she heard him mention selfies and wondered what cellphones had to do with Celtic folklore. When he elaborated on the magical seals that once came ashore to be transformed into young women, she realized he was talking about selkies.

Gazing out at the moorland she felt her heart race with a new excitement she couldn’t explain.

She would forward the photo to Matt when she got back to Ullapool. No stamp needed this time. ♦
