Mudfest makes for filthy fun Some 250 competitors took part in this year’s muck-filled event at Bissell’s Hideaway BY VOICE STAFF A rainy start to the day could not deter participants in the Rotary Club’s Mudfest Challenge on Saturday, as runners embraced the wet and wild conditions to raise money for a number of good causes. “It was great!” said Alana Peplinski, a Grade 11 E.L. Crossley student who competed in the event for the second straight year. “It was more fun this time; the weather was really nice, and there was more mud.” Alana was competing on a team with a small group of friends from her school.
The race has become something the girls look forward to every spring. “We really like doing it,” she said, “It’s becoming a bit of a tradition.” That is exactly the sort of sentiment that Rotary Club member Frank Adamson likes to hear. Adamson says that this year, he and the other event organizers really focused on attracting more young people and providing an experience that would encourage participants to come back again next May. “We really pushed to get a bunch of youth out,” he explained, citing high

A quirky fixture on Haist Street, just north of Pelham Arena, is no more. For nearly 20 years, a large scale model of a Dutch windmill sat prominently on the front lawn of the residence at the southwest corner of Haist and Berkwood Place. The property’s new owner wasn’t a fan. “It was an eyesore and a hazard,” said Richard Davidson, a contractor who bought

the property late last year, initially intending to renovate and resell it. But once Davidson’s wife saw the house—a 2,000 sq ft. bungalow with a wide-open floor plan—the quick-flip plan was history. As for the windmill, “A lot of people don’t mind seeing it go,” said Davidson. Elena Allenov isn’t one of them. Along with her husband and son, Allenov emSee MIXED REACTION Page 2

On Saturday, Pelham Sparks, Brownies and Guides from the Girl Guides of Canada partnered with the Town of Pelham to plant trees in Fonthill’s Woodstream Park. The park’s wooded area has been badly thinned in recent years by the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive beetle that destroys ash trees. Using grant money obtained through the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (FEF), the Guides were able to purchase seven tulip trees for planting. The TD FEF Tree Planting Grant Program offers girls and young women a hands-on way to raise their awareness of environmental issues while sup-

porting them to transform green spaces in their communities. A number of Town staff were on hand to assist with the planting, including Pelham’s Mayor Augustyn. “On behalf of Pelham Town Council I want to thank you very much for planting trees to improve our community,” said the Mayor. “You heard we had some trees that died and had to be taken down because of pests. These trees are native, and we’re hoping that there won’t be those pests and that these will live for many many years.” “Thank you for making our community better,” he added.
