Town responsible, says homeowner, but unresponsive

Decimated by Dewey, now at home on the shelf

BY VOICE STAFF An improperly completed repair by the Town of Pelham has resulted in road water contaminating a drinking water well, according to the well’s owner. In mid-December, a Town contractor repaved the shoulder in front of Gordon Redekop’s home at the bottom of Saylor’s Hill, a repaving that Redekop says eliminated the swale in the shoulder that had previously directed runoff farther along down into a ditch. Redekop’s well is in the middle of his driveway, less than ten metres from the edge of the road. “After we had a thaw— in mid-January or so—I turned the water on, and it looks like it’s tea, ” he said. Redekop, who says that he hasn’t experienced such an issue with his water in his 35 years at the house, also described the water as having different taste, and subsequently had two tests done on it. The first, done on February 22 from three different sample points, including Redekop’s kitchen sink and toilet tank, found a pres-

Basketball was not the primary reason that Courtney Kilyk landed at Niagara College last fall. “It was mainly the program I am in right now,” the 23-year-old Fonthill native said. “I heard a lot of good things about the

exercise science for health and performance program so I really wanted to get into something in the same field that I had already studied and get more out of it.” Prior to her arrival at Niagara, the Welland Notre Dame alumna spend four seasons studying kinesiology at St. Francis Xavi-

er and playing basketball with that school’s U Sports team. She enjoyed her year immensely. “I learned a lot in my program and basketball was just something extra to do and it turned out to be really fun,” the 5-foot-6 guard said. It also turned out to be

highly successful for Kilyk as part of a team and as an individual. Kilyk and her Niagara teammates made it to the bronze-medal game of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association playoffs before losing 9287 to Mohawk, and she was named an OCAA Second

S A C H I L D I felt intimidated by librarians, though I’ve come a long way since then. Now they just make me feel intellectually challenged. It’s not their fault, I hasten to add. They never set out to terrify children. Librarians provide an invaluable service. Many volunteer their time. They have to deal with members of the public. They believe in the printed word. It’s like being intimidated by Annie, or the Singing Nun. So, whence this irrational fear? Quite simply, they were once stewards of the incomprehensible Dewey Decimal System. I remember standing utterly mystified in the library children’s section, transfixed like Lot’s wife, gazing at those arcane inscriptions on the book spines. Eventually, I sought out a librarian.
