Following the Niagara Region Audit Committee’s meeting held last week, Mayor Dave Augustyn expressed his disappointment in the committee’s decision to defer further investigation into Pelham’s financial practices until they meet again on Sept. 18. The meeting on June 12 focused on a motion made by Port Colborne Councillor David Barrick that called into question the state of Pelham’s finances and their potential impact on the Region’s credit rating. Addressing each of Barrick’s assertions, Augustyn and CAO Darren Ottaway pointed to “inaccuracies” throughout the motion which they asserted were “misleading and erroneous.” A series of motions tabled by Augustyn and passed by the committee took the teeth out of Barrick’s original motion, shifting the focus away from Pelham and toward all municipalities within the region. By approving Augustyn’s amendments, the commitSee NOT PLEASED Page 7

Right-turn-only on Pelham panned As traffic levels increase, turns onto Pelham Street become harder in the absence of traffic lights BY VOICE STAFF Pelham drivers and business owners are upset with a Town Council proposal to force right turns-only onto Pelham Street in downtown Fonthill. The proposed changes would affect turns from the bottom of Church Hill Street and from under the arches above Pelham Town Square. Town staff had proposed installing a traffic light at an estimated cost of $140,000 to allow traffic to flow in
both directions from the bottom of Church Hill, however Council rejected the idea. While Council maintains that the enforced right turns would make Fonthill’s main shopping street more conducive to foot traffic, some community members think otherwise. As the owner of Beamer’s Hardware and TV for 31 years, Lloyd Beamer has watched the town transform in many ways. He is concerned that preventing drivers from turning left on Pelham
Street from these two intersections will turn his section of the street into a “dead zone.” “The disadvantages are going to far outweigh any of the advantages,” said Beamer. “We try and get people to come into town, and with what’s happening here it’s like they are trying to get people to stay out of town.” With a clear view of the intersecSee PANNED back page

L A RICE JACOBS died last week. That in itself isn’t surprising: she had just turned 87 years old and lived longer than a woman born in 1930 might have been expected to. That she lived for such a time ought to console those who knew her and make her passing less difficult. But it is never easy. Clarice, or Babe, as she was called by nearly everyone who knew her well, was born in Fonthill. She and her husband Gordon, whom she outlived by some 30 years, owned a fruit farm near Lookout Point Golf Club. After his death she continued to work that farm, and even in her 80s, and when she moved to Lookout Ridge retirement home she still rose early, keeping to farm hours. I first met Babe when I was 14 and volunteering at Lookout Ridge, running a weekly ‘Wii Bowling’ league. Babe was there every time. Despite hardly being of the demographic featured in Nintendo’s video game advertising, she was a champion bowler. I still don’t know how she was able to take to the game so easily: she could curve the ball both ways and hit her shots with such nonchalance that, as she returned See BABE Page 6
