Michael Jacques publishes his first book

Saying farewell, for now

Twenty-six year-old Michael Jacques and his father, Marcel, are seated at a table in the Fonthill Sobeys, where Michael has worked for the past ten years and calls his second home. He is easygoing, extroverted, eager to please, and quick to smile. At six foot four, with red hair, he comes across as a gentle giant. Aside from his height, there seems to be nothing remarkable about this young man. Sure, he has written and self-published a book, which is difficult, but not uncommon, and certainly not extraordinary—until we learn that he is autistic and has an intellectual disability. Michael reads and writes at a Grade 1 level. His book, quite accurately, is called, Can’t Read, Can’t Write. Here’s My Book. Years ago, Michael decided he wanted to begin documenting his stories so that he could remember them. Thanks to the use of speech-to-text technology, this was possible, and his journal kept growing until his sister, Kaila, discovered See MICHAEL Page 8

OFTEN THINK OF a story that I’ve read many times. It was written not so long ago by an aging writer, Howard Norman, who heard it himself long ago, when he was living in the far north and transcribing Inuit folk tales. A shaman turns a man into a goose. When it comes time for the flock to fly south for the winter, he despairs about leaving. “In his incarnation as a goose, the man realizes that unless he migrates with the other geese, he will die,” recalls Norman. “He falls into unmitigated grief, primarily expressed through a high-pitched wailing lament: ‘I hate to leave this beautiful place! I hate to leave this beautiful place!’” I have lived in Pelham— with brief absences—since I was six years old, when my parents moved with me and my two young sisters from a dodgy street in St. Catharines, where I received regular warnings about avoiding discarded needles by the curbs.
