In contrast to a slow afternoon in blazing heat, cooler temps on Saturday night saw the crowds come out to hear the music at Summerfest.

OR MANY MALES, likely one of their most cherished memories is their first car. Not the dad’s family sedan, but the first one with their name on the ownership. I’m not excluding females here, but it seems there were fewer car buffs within their ranks than in the other gender.

Perhaps their most cherished memories were more altruistic and purposeful than those enamoured with motor vehicles.

That first car for many guys seemed unmistakably symbolic of their passage into some higher level of masculinity. Racing stripes, wheel covers, fender skirts, mud flaps, straight pipes, and a trunk full of other auto accessories were somehow equated with the traits of masculinity for some males.

Corrections at the top: In our examination last week of the alleged economic benefits of Summerfest, in which we spoke to various businesses along Pelham Street, we managed to attribute ownership of Gelato Village to one of its staff. So as not to have my loyalty card revoked, kindly be advised that the actual owner of Gelato Village is Rocco Spano. Two scoops of pistachio, please...

Saturday sauna: In fact, that’s exactly what I ordered on Saturday, about halfway through a two-and-a-half hour visit to Summerfest.

The gelato was delicious, but it didn’t help treat the heat much. The combination of temperature and humidity seemed to keep a lot of folks away—at best the crowd was about a third of that in attendance at the same time last year. The “Chill on the Hill” slogan was particularly inapt this year, and last year was pretty toasty too. Maybe it’s time to morph this party into Fall Fest—or, better yet, Oktoberfest. Giant soft pretzels from Indulgence Bakery! Oompah bands!

Councillors and senior staff in lederhosen! I ran into dentist and photographer par excellence Louis Albanese at one point on Saturday, who said that he was going to tweet that conditions weren’t all that bad, with a light breeze kicking up. I counted myself lucky getting back to the car without keeling over. As the sun fell, though, the crowds rose, enjoying live music until the party was called to an early end around 11 PM, owing to the threat of thundershowers.

Heat lightning had entertained-slash-unnerved revelers for a good hour before Pelham Fire Chief Bob Lymburner took a final look at radar and made the call...Giving comfort: Lymburner’s men responded last week to another case of lightning—a strike at the Comfort Maple (page 3). There was only minor damage, and there likely would

have been no damage if a grounding plate hadn’t apparently been stolen from near the base of the tree. Scrap metal thieves?

Idiot children? The NPCA , which cares for the site, is now looking into whether a major revamp in how the tree is protected is in order...Feeley for council, 2022? Resident Frank Feeley’s letter to the editor this week (page 6; one among another pleasing bumper crop) on the continuing gypsy moth invasion strikes me as the words of a man whose destiny may not yet be obvious, even to him. It’s just this type of issue that gets the pulse racing—and residents involved in making change. Every member of our new council—with the possible exception of John Wink—ran on promises of change, each with his or her particular focus. My wife and I recently discovered what I believe is technically called a s**tload of gypsy moth caterpillars marching up our own trees. We might just have to look seriously at this Feeley fellow’s coming candidacy...Same strip, different lifetime: The two photos on the back page present quite the contrast. The black and white shot, taken the same year as Rebel Without a Cause was released (1955), and courtesy of former Keith’s Restaurant owner Vilma Moretti, presents a line of James Dean-like characters and their chariots. Below, the same spot today, the only immediately common denominator the Isis studio building on the corner—which, if we’re honest, wasn’t all that appealing in brick, either. What’s curious is that what was presumably a separate building, to its left, is gone, sacrificed to the later widening of Highway 20. (I know. Today we enjoy a widened version of Highway 20?)...Speaking of classic cars: We’re on the case, Nellie!..Right then: Off to swat some gypsy moths. ♦

Oops: No fire trucks for you Haist Street traffic-calming measure a little too effective

In an effort to bring further attention and deterrence to driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, the Niagara Regional Police Service reports the names of those people who are charged with an alleged criminal impaired driving offence in the Region. None of the following charges have been proved in court.

In addition to being charged, these individuals are also bound by a Ministry of Transportation 90Day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension and are prohibited from operating a motor vehicle on a roadway. The public is encouraged to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service Traffic Safety Hotline or Crime Stoppers to report those who are driving in contravention of the suspension.

The following individuals have been charged criminally with impaired driving by alcohol or drugs, driving with a blood alcohol concentration above 80 mgs of alcohol in 100 ml of blood, or refusing to provide a breath / blood sample.

Minor damage as lightning hits Comfort Maple Missing grounding plate meant tree suffered brunt of strike

BY VOICE STAFF Lightning reportedly struck Pelham's iconic Comfort Maple late last Tuesday afternoon.

Pelham's new CAO, David Cribbs, alerted the Voice, and Fire Chief Bob Lymburner confirmed that the fire department responded just after 5 PM. "The damage was limited to the base on the east side," said Lymburner.

Visiting the scene that evening, the Voice found minimal charring, roughly 10 inches wide by about 24 inches high. What appeared to be a loose support cable hung from above. A complex web of metal cables has been installed over the years to help maintain the tree's structural integrity. It wasn't clear whether the strike occurred directly

at the base of the tree, or farther up, with the charge travelling down the metal cable.

"The old girl has probably taken several strikes over the centuries," said Mayor Marvin Junkin. "One has to wonder if all the metal now holding her together, is, in any way, making the tree more susceptible to strikes in the future."

According to the NPCA, the Ontario Forestry Association estimated the tree to be 400-500 years old in 1975. It stands about 24.4 metres at its crown with a trunk circumference of six meters. It's named after the Comfort family, who settled on the surrounding land in 1816. A descendant donated the tree and adjacent property to the NPCA in 1961.

Charring is evident at the tree's base, as a loose support cable hangs in the foreground.

According to Lymburner, the next day the NPCA found that a grounding plate was missing, leaving the tree to absorb the lightning's force.

NPCA Communications Specialist Erika Navarro confirmed that the plate was

gone, presumably stolen.

“We will be replacing this ground plate—and, as recommended, we will place it deeper to avoid it being removed again,” said Navarro.

on behalf of the NPCA would do the work, and was in the process of putting together additional recommendations concerning the cabling that currently helps support the tree.

Council poised to extend cannabis Interim Control Bylaw Meeting ends abruptly at curfew, forcing additional session two days later

Pelham Town Council appears to be leaning toward extending its Interim Control Bylaw (ICBL) on cannabis producers for another year. The July 15 meeting heard this request from Cannabis Control Committee (CCC) chair, Tim Nohara, who said much work remains to be done to adapt municipal regulations to the burgeoning marijuana industry.

“It became clear to us reasonably quickly there was no way we could complete our work properly without an extension to the ICBL,” Nohara said. “The committee has been working diligently, weekly … it’s even difficult to review minutes for the next meeting because there’s so much work and research going on. And we have to thoughtfully apply that research.”

The Planning Act allows for a one-year extension to ICBLs. The current bylaw is in effect for one year, and is set to expire at 11:59 PM on October 14. It prohibits licensed cannabis producers from either expanding or building new grow-op facilities during its term.

In May, the Town denied pot producer Leviathan’s request for an exemption to the ICBL, prompting so-far-unrealized threats of legal action.

Last month, Niagara-on-the-Lake approved a oneyear extension to their cannabis ICBL. While most of council appeared on board with the idea, new CAO David Cribbs asserted that munic-

ipalities don’t have carte blanche in imposing ICBLs. In fact, once one expires, another cannot be passed for three years—for any issue.

“The issue of cannabis control, seems to me, the new guy, the dominant and most important and most pressing issue for the Town of Pelham currently in its social agenda,” Cribbs said.

“However, and with respect, one day this too shall pass. Section 38-7 of the Planning Act says that after the final expiry of an interim control bylaw, you can’t pass a new interim control bylaw for three years for any purpose on the same lands.”

Cribbs added that in his previous jobs, municipalities ended up regretting imposing them when another contentious issue —in his cited case, the spread of methadone clinics —popped up.

“My employment experience, without giving you legal advice, has been two of my last three employers have deeply regretted passing interim control bylaws on a given topic when as quickly a second topic came up, and they didn’t have that planning tool,” he said.

“It’s always important to look at the totality … I don’t have a crystal ball, I can’t tell you what’s going to matter in three years … the longer you extend it, the longer it is [before you] can use it again.”

With that information in hand, council unanimously directed staff to conduct a public meeting on the matter, likely in late August. They are then expected to vote on the extension on September 23, three weeks before the expiry of the current bylaw.

CannTrust fumes

Councilor Mike Ciolfi, who is also on the Cannabis Control Committee, told council that he and air quality specialist Phil Girard were invited by CannTrust to take air samples from the company’s Balfour Street exhaust vents during the week of July 8. The invitation came in the midst of CannTrust’s compliance meltdown, in which Health Canada put a hold on 5,200 kilograms of unlicensed cannabis, and which prompted the facility to go into a full-scale

shutdown in the wake of a whistleblower report.

Air quality results from Girard, who was hired by CannTrust, are expected within three to four weeks.

“Can we trust CannTrust reports after what they did?” Councilor Ron Kore asked aloud. “I wouldn’t trust them now, whatever they say.”

Fewer library hours

Council heard minutes from the Pelham Library Board, with Mayor Marvin Junkin expressing concern that the Maple Acre branch in Fenwick has reduced its hours by ten a week—as the board said would happen after being shut out of the spring budget. In response, Councilor Marianne Stewart noted, “Somewhere between 25 to 30 percent of our library budget goes to salaries.”

With time running out to get major public work projects done this summer, council agreed to take a pass on a staff report that would have seen construction commence on two troubled sites on Sulphur Springs Road. A stretch of the roadway has been closed for three years due to erosion from Twelve Mile Creek. Public Works Director Jason Marr said that the cost of the project had nearly doubled from an initial budget of $250,000, given the sensitivity of the area.

Had council moved to proceed with the work now, Marr said, he would have to have had a tender “out on the street next week” in order to allow for in-water work before August 31.

HIS PAST WEEK, on July 16, we celebrated a noteworthy milestone. No, this isn't another tribute to NASA and the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon shot. This anniversary is more current and directly impacts many residents of Pelham.

On July 16, 2018, Pelham’s former mayor and council "enacted, signed and sealed" bylaw 4019 (2018), bringing it into effect.

Many of you may be asking yourself: what is by-law 4019 (2018)? As did I. This bylaw totally redraws the boundaries and regulations for the Town of Pelham regarding the "Discharge of Firearms.”

These new boundaries now include areas which encompass agricultural and farmland which previously were allowed to discharge certain firearms as per bylaw 57 (1970), as further regulated under the Canadian Firearms Act. We now have farmers who are unable care for their land in a way in which they have been accustomed.

For most of us who don't own agricultural land, why should we care? We should care because I would be very

surprised if any landowner living in the new boundary was informed of the new bylaw.

charged under the new bylaw, they run the risk of being charged under the Canadian Firearms Act. This could include confiscation of their firearm and imprisonment, to say the least.

All this because they have not been informed of the new bylaw and are only doing what they have been doing for years. Legally!

Now the Town might say that such offenders may only be given a warning. If this warning is recorded, good luck renewing your PAL (gun owners’ Possession and Acquisition License) with a record of discharging a firearm in what is now deemed a restricted area. All this happened because no one has been informed of the bylaw change!

Why was the bylaw changed? Was it a knee jerk reaction to what happened in Toronto roughly 14 months ago? If so, why no word on its changes and implementation?

Even the Federal government has spent the last four years trying to convince the public they want to change the gun act—through both media and public consultation. Why nothing from See BYLAW next page

Youthful hijinks coming back to haunt?

Thank you for your recent article on Sun Valley Gardens, a business from yesteryear that brought a bit of “fame” and excitement to our area.

I worked at Fonthill Concrete Products during the summer months (I am the daughter of one of the owners), and on occasion they received delivery orders from Sun Valley. It seemed like the Fonthill Concrete owners handpicked the drivers for these deliveries, as one of the drivers, a son of the other owner, once lamented to me that he was never chosen to make these runs.

“Before I was married, they said it was because I was single, and now I’m married they still don’t give me the job.”

Hmm—perhaps he was too young or too eager?

The secretary once told me that a few days after one delivery, Karl, Sun Valley Garden’s owner, came rushing into the office with photographs that he wanted us to post on the bulletin board. The photographs showed our truck with a nude woman hanging off

Sun Valley order, and they would gladly assist in the delivery. I do not know if this ever happened, but I do know that one of Fonthill Concrete’s silent partners helped in a delivery to the “forbidden” gardens.

He had expressed his wish and was fortunate to be visiting us when an order came in. I remember his wife telling my mother of his adventure. In fact, his wife took great joy in recounting how he stated that when he went into Sun Valley he was chewing on the stem of his pipe, and when he returned to the company after the delivery he was still chewing, but the pipe was gone!

He had no idea when he lost it.

There was also mention of a volleyball game and bouncing body parts. His wife would just crack up every time she told the story.

My mother’s laughter was much more reserved.

Thank you again for reviving an interesting piece of our history. One that I am sure created a stir in our “straight-laced” community.

Your article about what we used to call the “nudist camp” sparked a memory and some chuckles.

The very idea that such an exotic and risqué venue was just up the road from us was pretty intriguing as kids. Wow—people sitting around a picnic table naked! Holy cow!

(Necessary pastoral reference, since we grew up on a dairy farm).

It was not uncommon for people to stop us on our bikes and ask us for directions, and for some reason (our Presbyterian upbringing?) we felt it was our duty to give the wrong directions. Every time. And then laugh our heads off as the car rolled along.

My sister reminded me that our brother Marvin and friends would sometimes ride their bikes to the gates of the Gardens, ring the bell, and dash away. Same motivation, I guess, but you would have to ask him.

Pelham Town Council?

Why only certain areas of Pelham? If it was under the guise of public safety, why not all of Pelham?

I don't understand the rationale for the bylaw or its arbitrarily imposed new boundaries. In recent history, has there ever been an incident in Pelham in which a law-abiding gun owner has injured themselves or others?

Under the new bylaw, I can't even take my daughter to a property formerly in the old zone and teach her to shoot a BB gun. She is no longer allowed to practice with her bow and arrow. Why the change? Why no notice of the change?

Even more importantly, who had the mandate to make the change?

I don't I think I'm going out on a limb in saying that no previous council member had such a mandate. At no time have I heard any thoughts to this bylaw and its new scope being considered for a repeal of bylaw 57(1970). I'm sure the council of the time had flashbacks to what happened in Wainfleet, years ago, when their council proposed such a change. There was a serious uproar from the public and the proposal was dropped. Pelham did have an election last fall. Did this affect the mindset of the previous council members running for reelection?

These are all questions I would like answered. Maybe this is one bylaw which needs to be repealed. Not all change is for the better. Bring back bylaw 57 (1970), and leave well enough alone. ♦

sented. Some regard it more as a recreational pursuit for their leisure time. Others live it as a philosophy. There is no longer one way to be a nudist or naturist—hence the debate over the two names. For some it is more adult, while others view it as a family activity. The only thing they all have in common is being more comfortable nude than clothed, if the environmental conditions are favourable.

So if interested, make sure you do your research to ensure that your first visit is the right place for you.

Appreciates last week's issue, shares traffic concerns I thought the Commentary/Op-Ed piece last week

by Louis Damm [“The real challenge of coexisting with cannabis producers,” July 17, p.

5] was really well written and balanced. His comparisons of cannabis farming v. hog farming were very thought-provoking.

Also, regarding the two letters about idiot drivers, it might be interesting to have an online poll or readers write in about the intersections they’ve noticed that are the most dangerous— maybe a copy sent to our local police would be in order? I’m sure walkers, runners and bicyclists would be interested to see where to keep an eye out.

I agree with both the writers—I’ve literally been bumped into by a car while running by someone turning right from Haist on to Canboro towards Fonthill, and I live near the intersection of Port Robinson and Pelham Street, and agree people seem to think that Port Robinson has the right of way, especially on school mornings.

I’d like to add the intersection of John and Stella Streets, inside the subdivision south of Glynn A Green, which has many schoolchildren that walk to school.

John has a stop in each direction, but not Stella, and

my children frequently walk and ride bikes through the intersection. I’ve warned them to stop when traveling on Stella, even without a stop sign, because many, many times people ignore the signs on John because they think it’s a quiet street, and there’s no need to stop and blow right through. It’s really only a matter of time before a child is hit at that intersection.

Summerfest claims don't add up

Single-file only, please—the boulevard that really is mostly boulevard

I wondered when someone would question these numbers [Making dollars and sense of Summerfest, July 17, p. 3]. Especially when the very successful Orangeville Blues & Jazz Festival, with similar attendance numbers, reports their economic impact to be about $1.5 million. That’s less than half of what is claimed by the Pelham Summerfest organizers.

I can attest that on any given day during the three day Blues & Jazz festival there are more people in downtown Orangeville than in downtown Fonthill during Summerfest.

And in Orangeville, the visitors are spending money. The local businesses in Orangeville love it and consider it to be the best event of the year.

Is this discrepancy because Orangeville folks are poor at math, or is it perhaps because of this: at the bottom of the board of directors’ page for the Orangeville Blues & Jazz Festival it reads, “Note: None of the individual directors hold elective office or are appointed by any municipal body.”

Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

One thing is certain— Fonthill downtown businesses do not benefit from Pelham Summerfest.

Please tell me that Summersides Boulevard, starting from Station Street in Fonthill, is a temporary roadway. Or maybe just a prank left over from the previous Town Council.

I recently went for a walk down there on a beautiful summer evening. I stopped at Summersides and just stared in amazement. Seriously? Who in their right mind designs a road like this?

Each lane is barely wide enough for a single car. Is it some kind of ongoing sobriety test for drivers? To see if they can drive in a straight line and not hit the curb? What about in a winter storm with low visibility? What about if a car breaks down and becomes disabled? Or emergency vehicles on a call?

How on earth is someone supposed to drive around a stopped vehicle?

As I walked up this “roadway” I noticed a few houses up at the bend.

Summersides Boulevard.

Imagine being in a car behind the garbage truck on collection day. I have never seen such a poorly designed road in my entire life.

Was the developer trying to be different? Or modern? What an embar-

rassment to the whole town. Please tell me this is temporary and please tell me the developer/planner is no longer making decisions in our town.

Yesterday I went for a walk through the trails at Marlene Stewart Park.

Lovely area.

As I explored and tried to find my way around, the trail I was on popped me back out to the street.

It was the neighbourhood behind the park.

I stepped out for a moment to see where I was and noticed that at this entrance to the park, there was a sign posted: "This park has ticks that are positive for Lyme Disease.

I was outraged! While I appreciate someone in the neighbourhood posting this notification to protect their community, wouldn't

The report was from April of last year. The resident said that they found the tick after walking through the Lathrop Nature Preserve.

I cannot confirm that this is in fact where the tick came from. Public Health Ontario identifies all of Niagara as a risk area for ticks carrying Lyme disease, and both the Town and the Region put out information on tick awareness prevention.”

Open letter to Mayor, Ward 1 Councillors Ciolfi and Stewart I am writing to inform you that my husband and I are two of the victims of the gypsy moth war. We live in Fenwick, just in front of the E.W. Farr school. Probably this paragraph and the final one are all you need to read of this letter, but I will go on to describe the problem.

After very much enjoying the lovely town of Fenwick for almost 40 years, raising our family here, and sailing, sometimes with a bit of difficulty, through periodic problems like neighbourhood construction, the weird renaming of E.W. Farr, and June bugs, we have met our Waterloo. Of the many trees we planted on our property, ten were infested with gypsy moths. Our infested trees include three crab apples, a blue beech, a chokecherry, a service berry, an oak, a tall viburnum bush, a native linden, and a tupelo. The maples, chestnut, gingko, a pseudo camellia, magnolia, dogwood, and a few other ornamentals were not as tasty to the remorseless hairy warriors.

We tried using the highly decorative ragged burlap strips and black two-way outdoor carpet tape on all the trees. Didn't work much.

Three or four times a day, during the entire caterpillar growth period, we went out to kill the caterpillars, also using a 12-foot pole with a

Some days, we actually killed close to a thousand caterpillars. (Yes, I really did count!)

The bases of the trees developed a rather pungent odour from the dead caterpillars. This competed with the sleep-depriving skunk smell from the cannabis grow operation at Balfour and Highway 20, which wafts its gagging odour into our bedroom at night and greets us in the morning as we step outside for our first sweet outdoor breaths of the day.

Last fall we tried to remove as many egg sacks as possible, but obviously, to no avail. As old age has become our companion, I can't see ourselves doing this caterpillar-squishing activity again next year —it was not really the highlight of the season. We did create

a neat dance to destroy vole tunnels, but just can't find enough imagination to deal with the hairy caterpillars.

One got down the front of my dress and, thinking it was a mosquito bite itching, I gave it a scratch. Oh, dear.

Not only a mess, but also a nice case of a big itchy hive as a result. Nasty things.

Our neighbours have also had the same trouble. (Not the hives, the infestation.)

I just looked outside and guess what? The gypsy moths are madly swirling in the wind, finding their mates to get ready for the next season.

So, if there is anything that can be done to help us with this, please, please accept our plea!

Shares concern about Thursday Bandshell seating First I would like to congratulate all of those volunteers and staff who work to plan an outstanding series of concerts at the Fonthill Bandshell, and thank the local businesses whose contributions help to pay the artists. The way that the Farmers Market and the Food Services work together with the concerts has also increased the enjoyment of this weekly community event.

I recently was in attendance at a similar event at Elmwood Village in the Buffalo area. I saw that at least half of those present were young families including many children. The children were given a generous area near the front, close to the stage, where they were enjoying the musicians, clapping their hands and dancing along to the music. It occurred to me while I was there that I have noticed proportionately fewer children and young families at our Fonthill Bandshell events. A letter to the editor in the July 17 edition, “Self-

ish Bandshell seating has to go,” may have identified a reason for this.

Older and retired individuals are free during the day to set up their chairs in order to have their preferred seating for an event they look forward to. However, parents of young families are generally at work or minding their children and are unable to do so. Is this why the audience includes fewer children? Granted, children do go to bed earlier, but it would not be unreasonable while school is out over the summer for children to be there for at least the first half of the show, or, as an exception, until it ends at 9 PM. We have brought our grandchildren to the concert several times, but when we arrived there was only room at the back, and it was impossible for them to see unless we held them up high, and even then their view was limited to flashes of a face or an instrument here and there. This has discouraged us from taking

them along.

Perhaps we need a longrange plan to have a concert site that can accommodate more people. This event is growing in popularity and there clearly is not enough room for all. This issue will only grow more pressing in the future. And perhaps setting up chairs ahead of time should be discontinued, except for those with disabilities or in wheelchairs.

Children do enjoy many Pelham recreational and library programs. Perhaps facilitating better access for families of young children may allow us to count these concerts as part of their summer, at no added cost.

Again, I wish to stress that this is simply a request for improved access for Pelham's children, and is in no way meant a criticism of the wonderful work being done by the staff and volunteers responsible for the concert series and the generosity of its sponsors.

Who's minding the store on gypsy moth spraying charges?

On April 26, in an effort to control the gypsy moth infestation, the Town announced “it will conduct an aerial spray program between mid-May and early June.”

However it conveniently forgot to mention that the residents whose properties were being sprayed would have to pay for it themselves. Trees Unlimited is the consultant and determined 294 residential urban properties would be sprayed. However my research suggests some rural properties may have been included in this number.

On May 6, Town Staff began preparing a report on how the Town could recover the cost for this spray program. This report appeared on its website prior to the May 21 council meeting.

On May 20, I emailed the Town and council highlighting over a half dozen errors, omissions and discrepancies in the report.

The report was convoluted, conflicted and

difficult to read.

Now, seven weeks later, I still have not received a response, despite getting an immediate email from the Director of Public Works indicating they would get back to me.

Responding to my follow up email on June 20, the Mayor said, “Any questions you have should be directed to Trees Unlimited…. [they] arrived at the numbers on the Town website.”

The Town authored the report, signed the report, and issued the report. Apparently the Town accepts no responsibility to ensure the veracity and accuracy of the details in the report.

The impression left is that the Town is acting as the agent for Trees Unlimited, and simply passes through Trees Unlimited costs directly to the taxpayers without See CHARGES Page 14

Hey Stella

Alternative country "supergroup" Hey Stella formed in 1998, and quickly gained a reputation as one of the premiere live acts in the country. Thousands of patrons caught Hey Stella—Lori Yates, David Baxter, Bazil Donovan (Blue Rodeo) and Michelle Josef (Prairie Oyster)— in the cavernous back room of Ted's Wrecking Yard and Ted's Collision during their five-year weekly residency. The band's irreverent and charming approach to traditional country tunes and their originals included: humour, pathos, and stellar musicianship. The night often ended with Lori standing on a table belting out Leonard Cohen's, "So Long Marianne," while everyone in the bar sang along with her, making them a crowd favourite. While the band never broke up, they did take time off while priorities shifted: babies were born, solo records made, careers were advanced. In 2017 a call came for another weekly residency, this time at the venerable Cameron House, and they jumped at the chance. From the opening note, it was clear the Hey Stella vibe was still there, and in fact may have aged like a fine wine. CO-WORKER CAME IN TO POKE around my workshop the other day. He was asking about various old clubs he saw lying around, which led to me pulling out my first Spalding Al Balding three iron with original leather wrap grip still intact.

Anyway, from there I started thinking about how those clubs came from my dad, and one thought led to another and I started thinking about the most interesting things related to golf I witnessed with my father and a few others over the years.

My dad gave me those clubs in the early ‘70s. He noticed I had my hands on the club as if I wanted to swing left-handed, and in good old, practical, Italian immigrant fashion, told me to switch hands instead of maybe thinking I needed left-handed clubs.

No matter. I figured it out, and my neighbor Chris and I spent thousands of hours knocking balls back and forth across our backyards.

In the days before video games, smartphones, and parents afraid that some whack-job was going to abduct any child let out unsupervised for more than 30 seconds, we had a lot of free time on our hands, and we got pretty creative in our summer down-time.

We buried a corn can as our hole at one point, and then attempted to create a water hazard by burying my mother’s old, pink, baby bathtub beside it.

We also used scissors to try to make a green around the corn can.

After about 15 minutes and five square feet of headway, this particular effort was aborted. Still, my father

We had a sign out by the road and actually had one gentleman that I recall stop and come back behind Chris’s shed to check out our wares. They amounted to all the balls I could pilfer from the tractors in the maintenance shop at St. Catharines Golf Club, and probably an old bag I pulled from their trash and a couple of stray clubs—not much different from my current shop actually.

Tom managed to sell a few balls for us at General Motors, but our total profits didn’t quite put us through college. I don’t think they bought us an ice cream cone actually.

One of the things I remember most are summer nights after dinner, hopping into the back of my dad’s truck (like I said, different times) for the trek to the course. He was a quarter of the way or so through his 41-year tenure as greenskeeper at St. Catharines Golf and Country Club, and every night without fail he went back to work to check up on things. We would just drive around to make sure the sprinklers were operating properly and stuff. If you saw him out there you would say he treated the place like his back yard. Actually he treated it much better. Our yard was generally a disaster.

By far the oddest experience of Chris and my golfing existence was a visit to a course advertised in the Dunnville phone book.

His family had a trailer at Larry’s Hideaway Trailer Park (which is now a golf course, funnily enough), and we wanted to give this place a try. Chris’s dad drove us out to the appointed spot, which was somewhere near where all the inbred axe-murderers who roomed with sheep lived.

When we arrived, there was a home with a substantial yard which was quite overgrown, and sure enough, there were some golf holes laid out around the place. Not very long or even recently maintained, but Chris’s dad did what any loving parent of the day would do—dropped us off and left us for a couple of hours to hack our way around this property. No one was home. Luckily, no one came home and dismembered us. It was quite a peaceful morning spent playing on our private little country club. The cries of terror coming from the basement were a little disconcerting, but hey it was cheap (even better, free). If you knew Chris’s dad, that was the most important part of any excursion. it to a personal relationship with God through Jesus. Dorothy prayed to accept Jesus into her life as her personal savior. Her life began to change. She was able to forgive her husband for years of neglect and lack of love. She no longer thought of divorce or suicide. She had found someone who could meet her deepest needs that no husband could.

For Charlie this spiritual discovery came three years later, in 1978. They had joined a Bible study which met at a tennis club. He read verses like John 3:16 and John 14:6, and thought to himself, “This is either the truth or a lie.” He chose to believe, repented of his sins, and surrendered his life to the Lord. His life too began to change. Gradually, his explosive temper and love of money began to fade. His relationship with his wife improved and their marriage was restored. He also realized he needed to bless his children with words of affirmation instead of criticism. He experienced a new love for everyone.

Charlie Duke is now 84.

As he closed his talk he said: “I won’t be around for many more years but I want you all to know this. We all can’t walk on the moon but we can all walk with Jesus and that’s far more important. It’s a free gift that my wife and I have accepted.

The Jacques journey continues With Sobeys' help, local author takes positive message on the road

About a year ago, the Voice published a story about Michael Jacques, a young man with autism and an intellectual disability, who wrote a book called Can’t Read Can’t Write—Here’s My Book, by using talk-to-text speech technology.

A lot can happen in 12 months.

While Michael lives in Fonthill and is in his eighth year of working at Sobeys, his exploits are taking him farther and farther away from home as he promotes his book and speaks about what it’s like to be the new and improved Michael Jacques: author, motivational speaker, Special Olympics Athlete, advocate for inclusiveness and Sobeys employee extraordinaire.

After appearing in the Voice, Michael did book signings at Sobeys. He met the Mayor. He was featured in articles in the Welland Tribune and the St Catherine’s Standard newspapers.

The momentum picked up and Michael began speaking at public schools and universities, sharing his perspective and imparting his message to students and staff.

The message is basic, but coming from Michael, it has a stronger impact on anyone who hears that inner voice which repeats two words that stop many of us in our tracks: you can’t.

Michael’s intention is clear: set goals and never give up. Beyond his expression of perseverance

and determination, Michael also speaks about the values to which he aspires: be kind to one another and include everyone.

Michael has spoken at schools locally and in Toronto and Huntsville. Brock and York Universities, along Niagara College, have welcomed him to speak to students and faculty. Ontario Hydro called and invited him to be a guest speaker at their headquarters.

The Jacques train left the station and the tracks ahead had best be clear.

Michael began to travel all over the province, making stops at City TV’s Breakfast Television, CHCH TV, co-hosting on TSN’s Sport Centre, guest speaking at New Concept, Apple Canada, the Golden Key International Honour Society, and Special Olympics Canada.

Before the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Elizabeth Dowdeswell, arrived in Welland to meet with local politicians this past May, Michael sent her a copy of his book. She was impressed with the young man and reached out, requesting Michael’s presence at the post-meeting reception, so that she could spend a few minutes getting to know him.

facto EA. Three days after meeting Dowdeswell, another invitation arrived. Her Majesty the Queen had recently created the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, an organization offering a platform to young adults, aged 18-30, who were making a difference in their communities. Michael is proud to be a part of this organization, which highlights individuals from 53 nations. He looks forward to meeting the president of the Trust, Prince Harry, along with the vice president, Harry’s bride, Meghan.

But wait, there’s more!

Along with an invitation from the Queen of England, Michael had an opportunity to meet another royal, the Queen of Daytime Television, Ellen Degeneres.

Michael earned an invitation to the Degeneres show when it was filmed in Toronto, in March, after the Niagara-on-the-Lake Outlet Mall sponsored an Ellen contest. Michael’s story was so remarkable that it put him on the coveted Behind the Scenes VIP guest list, complete with a limo, photograph with Ellen, and a few minutes of one-on-one with the star, also known for her benevolence and “be kind to one another” mantra. While Ellen did not receive gifts from her guests, Michael’s sister (and number one fan) has sent her copies of the book along with several messages, in hopes that Michael might appear on the show one day.

And that’s not all. When Ron Kore, Fonthill Sobeys franchisee and Michael’s boss, introduced him to Sobeys Vice President of Innovation, the veep immediately purchased 23 books for his staff. Soon after, Michael began the kick-off for Sobeys’ Special Olympics Checkstand $1M Fundraising Campaign, by speaking at

copies so far, and his fan base is growing. He receives cards, pictures, and thank-yous, from many people who are affected by similar circumstances or who are inspired by Michael’s story. Children, parents, grandparents and teachers write to express their appreciation for his promotion of the ideas that anything is possible and that we should always think outside the box.

Michael finds it difficult to pinpoint his favourite moment on this journey so far. When asked, he replies, “Just everything,” but with a little prodding he admits that meeting Ellen was certainly a highlight. They seem to have a lot in common.

In his book, Michael says, “I was shy before because of my speech, because sometimes I would say things wrong, but I realized that it’s better to talk than to be silent.”

This is another of Michael’s messages that hits a universal theme. Michael has given a voice not just to autistic and learning disabled people everywhere, but to all marginalized groups, who are inspired to speak-up.

Michael’s goal for the future, other than to take a seat in the chair opposite Ellen in Los Angeles, is to write another book to talk about everything that has happened since his first publication. This new book will include stories and perspectives from his inexhaustible support system, including his family, friends and the many people involved in his journey.

Michael is enjoying meeting new people and making friends, which exemplifies his passion for authentic inclusion.

“Winning isn’t as important as having friends,” he says.

True enough, but it’s hard not to see Michael as a winner, too.

Tropical heat for Summerfest Saturday

ITH TEMPERATURES IN THE MID 30S, and the humidex in the low 40s, Saturday afternoon at Summerfest felt less like a party and more like an endurance contest.

While a few hundred visitors roamed Pelham Street, turnout looked far reduced from last

Panthers fifth in Ontario Under-15 girls save best for last

Capturing the Blessed Sacrament tournament in March was a turning point for the Pelham Panthers under-14 girls basketball team on its march to a fifth-place finish at the Ontario Basketball Association championships.

“The girls’ schedule was very tough all season, so many great teams in OBLX and playing tough teams in tournaments made it tough to string together consecutive wins,” assistant coach Andrea Hurley said.

“The team worked hard in practices and extra training sessions, and it all came together at the Blessed Sacrament tournament where the

After conferring with Town Clerk Nancy Bozzato, Junkin put the brief extension and deferral to a vote.

Mayor Junkin responds It was indeed a unusual decision by council not to extend curfew, as requested by the Clerk, “for 30 seconds, just to pass a bylaw to confirm this evening’s decisions.” Because of the decision, which I believe was unanimous, instead of staying in session for an additional 30 seconds, the Clerk had to call a special meeting of council on Wednesday to ratify the bylaw.

This is equivalent to a shopper remembering, at the check-out counter at your local Avondale store, that they had forgotten to pick up a jug of milk, but decided it would be easier to return for it the next day, rather than walk to the rear of the store, right then and there, to get it. I personally had been at Town Hall since 2 o’clock that afternoon, and had unloaded 500 bales of hay that morning. I was still fresh and ready to go for another hour, or whatever, to get the Town’s business done. When you only have one meeting a month, which we do during the summer, everyone should realize that it is going to be a long one.

Pelham resident provides home services for seniors

As Canadian life expectancy continues to rise and seniors’ health improves in relative terms, more folks in their golden years are eschewing the idea of retirement homes and seniors’ care facilities. The logic is simple: if you don’t have to leave your home, why do it?

That’s where Melissa King and her newly launched Niagara Seniors at Home comes in.

Not long ago the Pelham resident realized that with more and more seniors sticking with the independence of home living, there was a market gap for assisting them with some of the needs of life.

“I’m geared toward seniors living in their own homes — meal planning and preparation, groceries, appointments, organizing, decluttering, a friendly visit, pet care, the whole thing,” King said of the service she provides.

“I’m 56 myself, so I’m getting older, and I looked around my neighbourhood and I recognized the need for this type of service. Everyone I talk to knows at least two or three people who could use a service like

King doesn’t do physical labour such as snow removal or lawn care, but she will help with gardening if needed. The gist of her service is to provide assistance with errands and tasks around the house, while at the time providing seniors with a social visit. She says her clients really enjoy that.

“Oh my gosh, I could be there all day,” King said.

Audit committee still finding its feet

Earning the public’s trust was clearly on the minds of staff, municipal councillors and committee members last Monday as it bandied about thoughts on its future goals and objectives.

At incoming CAO David Cribbs’ suggestion, the committee renamed itself to the Finance and Auditing Committee, to reflect a broader spectrum of responsibilities. However, the committee had difficulty prioritizing its goals and terms of reference, and moved that task to a September 19 meeting, when Cribbs noted it would give the staff and committee time to get “its house in order” over the summer months.

As a part of a facilitation session on how to define the committee’s terms of reference, Councillor Ron Kore noted that many residents appeared to expect it to be on a discovery mission to look into past wrong-doing by previous councils, and have asked him, “How much money did they take?”

“Everyone thinks there is this great conspiracy,” said Kore, and there is an expectation that the committee will unravel it.

Despite the fact that nothing fraudulent was unearthed by independent auditors Deloitte earlier this year, Treasurer Teresa Quinlin said she didn’t believe the public fully understood the ramifications of their investigation. She noted the difficulty in attempting to “educate the public” on the difference between corruption and fraud on one hand, and merely not agreeing with several of the decisions made by the previous council on the other.

Soybean mess along Fifteen Mile Creek mostly gone

After initially not doing so, the Pelham farmer responsible for an apparent mass spill of soybeans on the banks of Fifteen Mile Creek has come forward to clean up the mess, according to both the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and Mayor Marvin Junkin.

“The farmer has committed to cleaning up the remaining material within a week,” Lindsay Davidson of the MOE told the Voice on Friday. Junkin concurred.

“It is my understanding that once the [Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority] and the MOE got involved, the farmer came forward and claimed responsibil-

I again asked the Town to respond and have heard nothing. To be generous, it seems the Town was under a time crunch to get the job done, and since the individual residents were picking up the tab and it was not coming out of the Town’s budget there was no vetting done by the Town on Trees Unlimited’s data.

One residential spray area, F-02, costing $14,343, shows no residents allocated to this site and the costs are being charged to the existing 294 residents. The spill evidently occurred in January, when the farmer was transporting a wagon of soybeans with his tractor. The wagon became unhitched, and a substantial amount of its cargo spilled down the embankment. As the weather warmed, the unattended-to load rotted and its foul odour filled the air.

Gary Dingman, a nearby resident who first made the noxious discovery, told the Voice over the weekend that while most of the

residents’ properties was never gathered from the Town’s property tax records. Spray areas called “spray sites” were identified and fed into software to get the total overall acreage. However, this included about 15% of Town property—boulevards abutting the residents’ front lawns to the edge of the street— and the Town feels comfortable charging the 294 residents for the Town’s portion.

3. Back in April, the Town reported that Hillcrest Park and the Steve Bauer Trail totaled 15.6 acres. In May it reported it charged itself for spraying only 9.4 acres.

Where did those 6.2 acres at $625/acre totaling $4500 go? Were they incorporated into the residents’ acreage?

4. In April 2018, the Town issued a press release indicating the price for spraying private residential property would be $350/acre. This year it is $625/acre. Even though the Town is coor-

What Dingman is still most upset about, however, is what he calls the “gunk’s” continued presence in the sensitive creek.

“It’s floating everywhere,” he said. “It’s killed trees and vegetation … this part of the creek is an extremely rich ecosystem. Blue Herons feed here three times a day.”

Dingman’s assertion counters what an MOE spokesperson told the St. Catharines Standard, that

5. The properties abutting Hillcrest Park were sprayed back in 2008 and totaled 5.6 acres, according to Trees Unlimited.

This year 11 properties were added along Cherry Avenue, Concord Avenue, and Haist Court. According to Trees Unlimited, these 11 properties totaled 10.7 acres, roughly 1 acre per residential property. I went to the municipal office and checked the acreages of these 11 properties and they totaled 4.70 acres. It appears another 6 acres at $625/acre totaling $4239 is being improperly charged to the 294 residents.

Most properties fall into the .21 to .31 acre lot size (I checked the lot size of 70 properties at the municipal office in Fonthill), but a few are 10 to 30 times this size. Lookout Village, for example, has 7 acres and 150 condo owners, but are being charged the same rate as single residential property owner having a quarter-acre lot. The Town’s mission statement —treating people fairly— was ignored when this vote was taken. Charging everyone the same fee regardless of lot size is far from equitable. The Town says it would be too onerous a task and they don’t have resources in house to do it otherwise. In fact, they have all the data on file, in computers. Hasn’t anyone heard of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets? One-pricefits-all may be convenient, but it is sure not equitable.

Moving forward I believe the definition of residential property has to be addressed, the threshold criteria for spraying has to be defined in detail, more stringent oversight as to how costs are arrived at has to be implemented, the Town has to be more active in forecasting these expenses for budgetary purposes, and more importantly the expenses have to be shared by the community as a whole, as happens in other municipalities.

The Town and the entire community benefit with healthy trees and a healthy tree canopy.

I urge residents to take up the Town’s invitation for input. Email the Mayor, your councillors, and/ or senior staff, and let them know your concerns—pro or con.

On July 4, Niagara Regional Police began a voyeurism investigation, at which time it was alleged that an individual was surreptitiously recording others while they were in public, according to an NRPS statement.

On July 11, a search warrant was executed at a St. Catharines residence.

As a result of the investigation, Andrew Vincent, 37, has been charged with one count of voyeurism and one count of failing to comply with probation order.

The accused was held in custody, pending a bail hearing.

Charlie Duke, Jr., youngest man on the moon

WELVE MEN HAVE walked on the moon. Four are still living. I met one of

them.

Charlie Duke Jr. is the tenth and youngest man to accomplish this feat. Last year he shared his story at a prayer luncheon in Niagara Falls and I was eager to attend. This is what I learned.

Duke was born in 1935 in North Carolina. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1957 and served as a fighter interceptor pilot in Germany for three years. In 1961 President Kennedy told the world that the U.S. would put a man on the moon by the end of the decade and bring him back safely. Duke commented that astronauts were happy to hear the last part because no one wanted a one-way ticket!

The young pilot was chosen as a NASA astronaut in 1966. He loved his demanding but thrilling job.

His wife, feeling neglected, was less enthusiastic. She was the homemaker raising their two children, Charles and Thomas.

After supporting earlier Apollo missions from the ground, Duke, along with John Young and Ken Mattingly, was chosen for the Apollo 16 moon mission in 1972. He would be the lunar module pilot. His many years of training would now be tested.

At lift-off, Duke noticed how violently their spacecraft shook as it sat perched on top of a 48,000 kilo Saturn 5 rocket. His heartbeat shot up to 144 beats per minute. Fellow astronaut John Young, who had flown a previous mission, recorded a cool 70 beats. Duke will never forget looking back at the little blue and green ball called earth. He described it as “breathtakingly beautiful.”

It took three days to reach the moon, travelling at 35,000 km/h. After orbiting the lunar surface the crew prepared for landing. They were very excited to walk on the moon’s surface, which was like a desert of fine, grey sand.

Duke joked, “You couldn’t get lost because all you had to do was follow your footprints back to the lunar module.”

They used a lunar rover to explore the area, bringing back rock samples.

Duke was the navigator and Young was the driver. It only weighed 25 kg, so together they could pick it up if they wanted to.

GLEDHILL, Peter It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peter, peacefully and with his darling wife at his side on Tues July 16th, 2019. He was in his 85th year. Beloved husband and best friend to Ann for 65 years. Cherished father to Linda (Dave) Walker, Tony (Karen) Gledhill, Andrew (Julie) Gledhill and Andrea (Derek) Serianni. Special Grandpa to Brett, Justin and Logan Walker, Melissa (Mitch) Galpin, Brad and Christine Gledhill, Isabel Gledhill, Carina, Jordan and Harley Serianni, and Great Grandpa to Eric and Kyle Galpin. Peter will be fondly remembered by his loving extended family and many friends. His family would like to extend a special ‘Thank You’ to the staff and caregivers at Royal Rose Place in Welland for their compassion over the last number of months. Peter was known for his outstanding career as a hospital Pharmacist.

He began at Toronto General Hospital, eventually becoming the Director of Pharmacy at Scarborough General. Later when he moved his family to Niagara he worked at Welland General and Shaver Hospitals, finishing his career at the Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital.

He very much enjoyed playing tennis and always appreciated the companionship he found with his tennis friends. In keeping with Peter’s wishes cremation has taken place.

A Little Book About Us

UR CHILDHOOD DEFINES OUR personalit y. It shapes who we become.

When Vilma Moretti had grandchildren, she realized that her childhood and theirs were worlds apart. They had absolutely no idea what life was like for Vilma when she was their age. Theirs was a world of computers, iPods, cellphones, texting, Instagram, and YouTube. Vilma thought that when they were grown they might be interested to know what it was like for other generations to grow up. She started collecting recollections—her own, and those of some of the many people she met every day while running Keith’s Restaurant, her family’s business at the intersection of Pelham Street and Highway 20, in Fonthill. The result was, “A Little Book About Us,” published in 2009, from which this series is excerpted. Keith’s is gone, but the stories remain.

Finally, it's nice and warm here beside the Quebec heater. I'll just put my clothes on the wooden stand the heater sits on.

Not too close. Dad said they could catch fire if I put them too close. It's so warm here I hate to go to the kitchen to have breakfast.

Why does Mom always make me drink milk? It hits my tummy and wants to come right back up—yuck.

My clothes are nice and warm but I really hate getting dressed in the living room. It feels weird. Better hurry up or I'll be late for school. Bye, Mom! This part of the sidewalk is hard because it has so many cracks. Step

on a crack and break your mother's back. Ha, made it through. Mom's back is safe for now.

The leaves on that one tree on the corner are the best ones in the fall. They're all a beautiful yellow and when the sun shines on them, you can almost see through them. The black branches look so pretty and strong—like they could hold up the world. Here's the house where that dog lives. The owner said it was a boxer. I don't know why they call them that because he's real friendly. His whole bum moves when he wags his tail—which is a lot!

There's that place where the priests live. They have these neat flowers that go all along both sides of the walk going up to the big front door. Wonder what they're called?

School seems forever away this morning. I'm tired and, gee-whiz, I'm going to have to do it again to go home for lunch. Well at least I'll be able to watch Search For Tomorrow and The Guiding Light with Mom. Wonder why they call them soap operas? They're

only 15 minutes long each. I thought operas were longer and people sang in them.

Who knows!

Then I'm going to have to walk back to school for the afternoon classes and then at four o'clock, walk back home again. Whew, I'm getting more tired just thinking about it.

When I get home, though, I can play with my new India Rubber Ball. I like how it's all white, and boy can it bounce! When I bounce it real hard on the sidewalk, it goes lots higher than my red, white, and blue ball.

The red, white, and blue ball looks better when it spins. Maybe I'll play: Ordinary, dictionary, stationary, no movings, one foot, the other foot, one hand, the other hand, tweedles, twiddles, clap at the front, clap at the back, frontsy, backsy, backsy, frontsy….

Or maybe we can get all the kids to go over to the house with the big chestnut trees and play statues.

Robert twirls me too hard, but last time I held my position the longest. It was hard, too, because when I stopped twirling, I landed

on one foot with my arms way out and it was hard to balance.

If we can't get enough kids to play statues, maybe Jane will play marbles with me. The hole I made with my heel is still there, so we can just start playing. My new cat's eye is too pretty to play with but I sure would like to win Jane's aggie.

I forgot my skipping rope! I wanted to play double-dutch at recess.

Oh well. Maybe I'll just do some hopscotch if the rain didn't wash the chalk away.

Why is recess only 15 minutes? It's the best part of the day.

I'm at the crossing guard already. She's holding the sign. It looks funny with its round metal base and long pipe-like body and square top that has the words STOP in red on one side and GO in green on the other side. What if somebody can't read? How do they know when to cross?

There's lots of cars this morning. Am I ever going to get across? Finally, the guard is turning the sign.

Oh, oh—the bell! I’m late! ♦

“I’m finding the kind of things I do are filling in the gaps,” she said. “Each senior is going to be different, and I’m quite flexible.”

I remember those days and how I envied the owners of these macho machines.

However, my first car experience wasn’t anything like the masculinity enhancements enjoyed by my counterparts.

My first car was an old wreck that was to provide transport between two summer jobs while I was in university. I came from a family of modest means and automobiles were beyond affordability. My father died when I was a young teenager, and after that dreadful misfortune money was a scarce commodity. I mention this not to elicit sympathy but rather to put into context my thinking and circumstances at that point in my life.

I was home from college for the summer and fortunate enough to get two jobs that had different schedules. That meant I needed transport between the two worksites to make this arrangement work so that I might earn the money needed to continue my education.

My sister and her husband had an abandoned old wreck of a vehicle parked in their backyard and said I could have it if I could get it to work. I knew little about automotive mechanics but I bought a used battery, a fan belt, a bicycle pump and a can of gas to see if I could resurrect this 1940s beast of a vehicle. Remarkably, with an investment of 50 bucks, it came to life! So I reinflated the tires and was off to the races, so to speak.

This vehicle was a beastly fourdoor sedan. There was not one sparkle or glistening from any part of the body or trim inside or out. It had a six-cylinder flat-head engine that looked like it powered a sewing machine rather than this macadam-mastering monstrosity.

It had a Dynaflow fluid transmission and, mysteriously to me, included a clutch on the floor and a gear shift on the steering column.

This fluid transmission was very smooth shifting, but oh so slow to accelerate this behemoth of a vehicle. I was often overtaken

by fully loaded moving vans, funeral processions, and occasionally by a homeless person pushing a shopping cart overflowing with all of their worldly possessions.

Frankly, I had no idea what terms like flat-head and Dynaflow meant, other than these were crucial to the operation of the vehicle.

The tires had mere traces of tread and, in retrospect, along with other deficiencies, this inanimate brute was not likely roadworthy by any sensible standard.

However, it was my first car, and I fervently hoped it wasn’t to be the omen of my entry into manhood.

For that reason— and to preserve what was left of my marginalized self-worth—I didn’t join the ranks of the cruising aficionados on Friday and Saturday nights. I rationalized that mine was a utilitarian vehicle, far from being a show car.

Better to keep it hidden than to display it openly.

There was one particular incident that stands taller than others among my memories of my first car. I lived in Niagara Falls and the girl I was dating lived in Wainfleet.

Most remarkably and unlikely, in the context of this recollection, she became, and still is, my ever-loving wife. You can take from that whatever you like. However, I maintain that it was my charming character that impressed her most, and that my wreck of a car was of no consequence.

On one date-night I piloted my less-than-pride-and-joy from Niagara Falls to Wainfleet to pick her up for a social event taking place in Niagara Falls, NY. As I neared her home I felt a bit off kilter and pulled over to the shoulder.

As I exited the car I involuntarily dropped to my knees. It turned out that there was a small leak coming from a broken manifold gasket, and on longer drives any occupants were slowly being gassed with carbon monoxide.

However, after a moment I recovered my mobility and cracked open the widows and thought that this natural ventilation would provide some protection from the gases leaking into the car through the rusted holes in the floor boards. Oh, the profane ignorance of youth!

When I got to my girlfriend’s house her father was tending the

garden. He put down his rake, greeted me warmly and asked where we were off to that night. I told him about our intended event in New York, to which he quickly responded, “You don’t plan on driving my daughter there and home again in that, do you?”

Pointing of course to my still slightly smoking, style-deficient beast from Detroit.

Then he said, handing me a set of keys, “Better take my car to be on the safe side and, be careful.”

Holy smokes, his car was a Buick hardtop! A beautiful new model that exuded the machismo my clunker so despairingly sucked from my image. I could hardly believe this generosity. Clearly, this offer was motivated by his great love for his only daughter and a fatherly concern for her safety.

I suspect it also meant that his daughter had previously extolled my virtues and admirable qualities, leading him to not only trust me with his daughter but also allow me the loan of his top-of-theline automobile.

And so it was, my entry into the macho state of being an owner of a set of wheels was a little opposite from others of my generation.

But this oddly different experience likely helped me stock up on an element that I was probably somewhat short of in those young years—humility.

That car lasted me throughout the summer and I sold it to a scrapyard dealer for 50 bucks before returning to my studies. Regardless of those numbers, I more than broke even. ♦
