The barn belonged to Greenview Farms owner Terry Yungblut. Alerted to the growing fire, he rushed to the burning building from a nearby field where he had been working. He

Unfortunately, the fire grew quickly amid the highly flammable hay and straw that filled the upper level of the barn, and the smoke and heat soon forced everyone out. While

IN THE NEWS Pharmacy robbery

On Friday, July 15, at approximately 4:30 PM, a lone male suspect entered the Tremont Pharmacy on Tremont Drive in St. Catharines.

The suspect produced a weapon and obtained a quantity of narcotics from the staff before fleeing northeast in the area of Tremont Drive and Glendale Avenue.

No one was injured as a result.

The suspect is described as being a white male, 2030 years of age, with a thin build, approximately 6 feet tall with a dark or tanned complexion and an unkempt appearance. The suspect was wearing a black baseball cap, sun glassess, baggy green or khaki pants, a green shirt and high top shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Niagara Regional Police Detective Office at extension 4380.

Bridge slide scheduled for end of July

At the end of July the Central Avenue Bridge in Fort Erie will be slid into place.

The project originally started in March 2015 and is being built to replace the existing Central Avenue Bridge that had stood for more than 65 years.

To minimize traffic disruptions, the construction of this bridge involved building the new structure adjacent to the existing structure using a rapid

bridge replacement technique. The new structure is then slid into place.

Sliding a bridge involves the use of a hydraulic jacking system to slowly move the structure onto its final alignment.

The slide will take approximately eight to ten hours to complete. The exact date will be determined in the coming week, and is dependent on weather and the contractor’s state of construction readiness.

Final details will be posted on the Region’s website and social media accounts the day prior to the slide.

A public viewing area will be created at the west limits of the project on Lewis Street for those interested in watching the slide take place.The Central Avenue Bridge is a $15 million project that is expected to be completed by October 2016.

When complete the new bridge will be 115 m in length and will have two lanes of traffic, two dedicated bicycle lanes with 1.5 m pedestrian sidewalks in each direction.

The new structure is a concrete slab on a steel girder bridge that will incorporate parts of the existing Central Avenue Bridge as a heritage feature.

Staff from the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, local fire chiefs, and MNRF met on June 28 to discuss protocols if a fire event were to occur at the Bog. As such, MNRF Haliburton Fire Response were able to begin containment efforts within 19 hours of initial contact.

“I am incredibly pleased with the response and support we received not only from MNRF, but also the fire departments of Wainfleet, Welland, and Port Colborne, Niagara Helicopters, Niagara Parks Police, and Niagara Region Public Health,” said Carmen D’Angelo, CAO

of NPCA. “We were able to execute an emergency response plan that proved to be effective in getting the fire assessed and controlled quickly enough that the damage to the property and effect on the public was significantly limited compared to past fires at the Wainfleet Bog.”

Stolen truck recovered

On Wednesday, July 13, police responded to the area of Cataract Rd near Highway 20 for a recovered stolen Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck. The unplated truck had been stolen from a farm on Rice road near Port Robinson Road, possibly overnight July 12.

There was no damage to the vehicle and it was returned to its owner. Police continue to investigate the incident.

On Thursday, July 14, 2016 shortly after 9:30 PM, police were called to the Pelham Road and Rykert Street area of St. Catharines for a robbery that had just occurred. Upon arrival, officers learned that the victim had been walking down Pelham Road when he was approached by a male who brandished a weapon and demanded that the victim turn over his valuables.

The victim complied and the suspect fled on foot.

Responding officers established a perimeter while a K9 Unit commenced a search. While on the perimeter, officers observed a male matching the suspect description and, after speaking with him briefly, took him into custody without incident. A 24-year-old male of no fixed address was subsequently charged with one count of robbery and one count of breach of probation.

Electric vehicle charging stations coming to Niagara

The province plans to build some 500 electric vehicle charging stations at over 250 locations across Ontario in an attempt to reduce greenhouse gas pollution and fight climate change. The province is working with 24 publicand private-sector partners to create a network of public electric vehicle stations in cities, along highways, at workplaces and at various public places across Ontar-

io. Most plug-in electric vehicles can be recharged overnight from a regular three-prong household wall socket, called level 1 charging. Level 2 charging uses a 220/240V outlet. This is the most common type found charging stations and allows many vehicle models to fully charge in approximately 3-5 hours. Level 3 chargers (typically 480 V) have been developed to enable quick charging in as little as half an hour. These chargers are still rare, but are generally available in urban centres in Canada.

The provincial plan includes over 200 Level 3 and nearly 300 Level 2 charging stations.

The entire network will be in service by March 31, 2017. Eight stations will be built throughout the Niagara Region, including one each in Port Colborne, Welland, and St. Catharines.

The government hopes the stations will help address “range anxiety,” an alleged concern regarding the distance electric vehicles can travel compared to traditional vehicles.

Building a more robust network of public chargers across Ontario allows electric vehicle owners to plan longer trips knowing that charging stations are as readily available as gas stations.

The province argues that the new network of stations will allow electric vehicle drivers to travel confidently from Windsor to Ottawa or from Toronto to North Bay and within and around major urban centres.

Fire crews instead focused their efforts on containing the flames and protecting the nearby farm house and outbuildings, which were at severe risk from the heat and wayward embers.

Thorold Fire Chief Michael Seth noted that barns can present unique challenges to rural firefighters.

“Typically due to age and building construction, coupled with their intended use, a barn fire is fought differently than a residential fire,” he said. “With residential fires the construction requirements are significantly more stringent.”

We will not likely be able to find a definitive cause Seth stated that damage was estimated at over $1 million. He further noted that the nature of the blaze would make it difficult to determine what started it.

“Due to the extent of the fire, we will not likely be able to find a definitive cause,” he said.

More than a dozen fire trucks were called in to fight

the fire, with Pelham contributing two tankers and a pumper. Thorold crews spent the following day sifting through the debris and dousing the coals, to ensure the fire was completely out.

On Sunday night, family member Kory Yungblut took to social media to speak about the loss.

“It wasn’t easy to see a generational family barn go up in flames and the years of dedicated breeding take a huge hit,” he said.

He further noted that he was thankful for all the support provided by friends and neighbors: “It was wonderful to see the community come together to provide help and food.”

Thankfully, no one was injured during the ordeal.

Brace yourself: New design speeds return to work

BY VOICE STAFF As a Niagara Health Safe Patient Handling Consultant, Krystle Etherington finds solutions to help staff recovering from injury and illness return to work.

However, one reoccurring issue among staff with repetitive motion hand and wrist injuries presented her with a major challenge.

“The individual would be in a return-to-work meeting and they would be wearing a splint or brace,” said Etherington. “They couldn’t perform patient care if they had to wear it at all times because it couldn’t be cleaned as needed. We would have to keep them at a desk.”

Santa Claus to make summer visit

BY VOICE STAFF Christmas is coming early this weekend as Holy Trinity Fonthill Church gets set to host their first ever Christmas in July on Sunday. The event will collect cash and food donations in support of Pelham Cares.

“We organized this in response to a desire of the church to be involved with the community, and knowing that Pelham Cares is always looking for food donations at this time of year,” said Craig Stirtzinger, who helped organize the affair.

“Food bank supplies diminish in the summer months, so we wanted to raise a little bit of awareness and have some fun with it at the same time.”

We’ve worked on getting something fun for him ...while he’s vacationing down here to keep shelves stocked this time of year. With school out, kids who may normally take advantage of nutrition programs have to go without, putting more pressure on organizations like Pelham Cares. At the same time, food donations

are not as prevalent in the public psyche as they are during feasting holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving. Stirtzinger thinks this event can help offset these other factors and get people thinking about giving.

“We have a donation bin, and we will be accepting food and cash donations there,” he said. “With Santa coming, we are encouraging children to attend as well.

He’s not as busy in the summer, but he does like to rest so we’ve worked on getting something fun for him and the kids to do while he’s vacationing down here.”

The event will run from 10 to 11AM Sunday. There will be a free hour afterwards for kids to meet Santa and one of his elves, and have a picture taken with them.

The Pelham Medical Associates Mosquito Rep team played in a local Thorold tournament this weekend, coming up just short in a great game against Lasalle. Despite the 7-5 loss, the Panthers finished strong with the bases loaded in the last inning.

“I started playing Pokemon when I was a kid, so that was the initial appeal, just kind of seeing what it was,” said Rob, with a laugh. “And then it was also sort of an excuse to get out, so I guess it was a combination of nostalgia and exercise.”

Regardless of the reasons

for playing, it appears that the game will be around for a while. While users described the game as simple and repetitive, none of those interviewed were getting bored with it just yet.

“I think it’s still just as engaging,” said Ashick.

“I don’t think it will get boring until you capture all of them,” added Eric. “And you can always retake gyms and lose gyms and stuff.

The only thing I’m worried about is the data consumption.”

While data consumption is a certainly a concern, per-

haps the larger issue surrounding the game is user privacy. Part of the reason behind the game’s sky-high valuation is its all-encompassing access to user data, including identity, location, and media files that allow for improved targeted marketing campaigns tailored to individual users.

But in an era when privacy is increasingly traded for more immersive entertainment, these concerns aren’t keeping many users from the game. Just head down to Peace Park and see for yourself.

Turning language inside-out with Pokemon Go

Livestock by-law is in place for good reason

W

HEN PARENTS of previous generations said to go outside, this isn’t what they had in mind: Hordes of young adults stumbling around parks and public spaces, faces buried in tech that make the moon landing computers look like flint arrowheads. Out-of-doors, but in their own worlds— virtual worlds that offer little more than simple goals and repetitive tasks.

But that’s the thing about language.

It’s slippery.

Words and phrases contain meaning within meaning, connotations amid denotations that define our understanding and cloud communication.

However, it doesn’t take a disciple of Derrida to deconstruct that age-old phrase, “out-of-doors,” to understand that just being physically outside misses the mark. Okay, Pokemoners, granted you’ve technically fulfilled the request, but now that you’re beneath an open sky, try looking up. It might astound you.

In this case, the word “outside” was just a placeholder. It was never about being physically out-of

-doors. It was about what the Outside represents.

When someone says, “Let’s go outside” what he means

There is an enormous, incredible planet out there full of interesting people is, “Let’s go engage with the world around us. Let’s interact with people and places. Let’s strengthen our bodies and our minds. Let’s learn something for godsake!”

Which isn’t to say these things can’t be accomplished indoors. They can even be achieved through gaming in some circumstances, in games that make you think, or problem solve, or do anything beyond some rapid-fire, instinctu-

al flick of a joystick or press of a button. But the inside should never be confused with The Inside. The Inside is routine, malaise, mental and physical stagnation. It’s Candy Crush, Halo, reality TV, and every other distraction that disengages people from the world around them.

There is an enormous, incredible planet out there full of interesting places and incredible people. Go see it, and not just for the digital creatures that some “augmented reality” feature has programmed over it. No one on his or her deathbed wished they’d caught just one more Charizard. Or watched one more episode of Pawn Stars. Or had anything more to do with the Kardashians.

Which is not to say a person can’t have fun. Downtime, relaxation, and recreation are integral to human happiness. But all things in moderation, because people are slaves to whatever has mastered them. So play Pokemon Go. It’s fun, it’s diverting, and it’s probably better than endlessly perusing Facebook and Twitter. But please don’t mistake being outside, for Being Outside. Don’t let a video game (or TV, or checkout-line novels) take the place of careful, critical thinking and genuine human contact.

Let me be very clear that I support farming in general. I grew up on one. I recognize the value in it. That said, I have concerns.

First, this is not new. The by-law has been in place since 1987.

It’s not often enforced as long as people around them don’t get upset about it.

But anyone buying property should do their homework first and know what they can and cannot legally do.

Second, I can tell you that living next to a hobby farmer can be a nightmare.

I bought land and built a house next to a 3-acre property that had an old dilapidated barn and house on it. The nice lady who lived there was part of the original farm family who owned all the property around. It got subdivided and that is how I came to purchase the land as a building lot.

I was issued a building permit because the barn was no longer used for animals, and hadn’t been for decades. She talked about tearing the barn down because it hadn’t been used as a farm barn in many years (it had some storage stuff in it at the time) and she was concerned about the structural integrity. Sadly, she passed away.

My current neighbour bought the property around 2012 or 2013. He talked about fixing up the barn. It

seemed cute at first that he got some animals.

But then he got more.

And more.

I can tell you that living next to a hobby farmer can be a nightmare

Now he has a horse, numerous cattle (including bulls, cows and calves), goats, chickens, guinea hens… Maybe pigs (he certainly had some last fall when they got loose and dug up another neighbour’s yard).

And four or five guard dogs chained around the yard. And the barn is in no better condition now than it was before.

The animals eat the grass down to the dirt and when they can’t find more, they break out into the neighbourhood.

I have had to pull my children inside when an 800 lb bull (BULL — as in uncastrated, territorial, some-

times aggressive, and BIG) decided to roam into my yard for food. (There are currently a dozen young children in the immediate area.)

My property value has plummeted.

What was a picturesque pastoral area has become a nightmare.

Complaining to the Town of Pelham has been our only recourse when he just won’t be responsible or reasonable.

He was deemed “legal non-conforming” (a decision that I am trying to get the Town to reconsider) and told to fix the fence (which he still hasn’t done).

Perhaps the by-law needs to be amended. Maybe 10 acres is enough for a couple of cows and some chickens.

Maybe the person you wrote about has good fencing and takes the time to care for his animals.

But there are other examples of people who have this fairy tale image of being a “gentleman farmer,” who don’t know or understand or have the desire to take on the work and constant maintenance that goes along with it.

There need to be enforceable rules to protect others from that kind of neighbour.

It’s not a “gift” when you’re paying Here we are three-and-a half weeks after the Mayor’s photo opportunity to herald the beginning of the construction of the building to be connected to the Maple Acre Branch of the library.

The demolition has gone ahead in a timely fashion, but I guess no one thought to apply for a building permit along with the demolition permit, so here we sit, the build being delayed.

The Mayor originally told us that it would be shovels in the ground on June 1 and completion by mid-November. This was amended to shovels in the ground June 20, completion by mid-December.

The Mayor referred to this as an “early Christmas present.” It might be considered such if the Mayor himself were footing the bill, but we taxpayers are the ones buying our own present.

Generally speaking when I receive a present there is a nice treat inside the box, but this present is nothing other than a “box” with a circulation desk inside.

I think that most of us, when we think of a library, think of the things inside the box: the books, the Type your pithy letter to the Voice right this minute!

The shelving, tables, chairs, desks, etc. are being funded by monies raised through donation, the Pelham Art Festival and the Friends of Maple Acre. I might add that it was the Friends group who fought, not once, but twice to save the Maple Acre Branch.

The furnishings inside the old library have been sold off, and some things discarded.

The shelving that had been paid for by donations was sold. At the Friends of Maple Acre meeting, I did ask the CAO of the library if some of the bookcases could at least be used in the old section. The reply was that everything would be new.

He then asked if we could raise another $50,000.00.

I don’t know about you, but I found that to be offensive. Most of us have lived in more than one house in our lifetime, when we move do we simply discard everything and buy new?

All we can do is wait and see how long this will take.

It is already far behind but we’ve been told it will be completed on time.

I guess we’ll all show up in mid-December (or maybe mid-February, or midApril) to see yet another Mayoral ribbon-cutting photo opportunity.

Don’t believe rosy claims for seniors’ centre I recently attended a public meeting at Town Hall and spoke on the proposed zoning amendment that would allow a company from Toronto to build a 76-unit seniors facility on Baxter Lane with a pharmacy, doctors’ offices, and other commercial uses.

What a fantastic proposal—for a city where this complex would fit with the make-up of a city lifestyle and infrastructure.

Fenwick is not a city.

I believe most people who live here do so because of what it is, a village.

If this complex gets built I guarantee that the atmosphere we once enjoyed will be no more.

I and most others could have lived in any other city.

We chose Fenwick for what it is, not for what it could be as proposed by some Councillors and big city developers who will build, make their money and move on!

I’m not against seniors, I’ll be one sooner than later.

But I want to paint a picture of our village when this gets built.

I believe that most people who live here do so because of what it is, a village Yes, I said “When this gets built” because I left that meeting with a sickening feeling that some of our Councillors have made up their minds and will push this through (remember our new design of the Fenwick library?)

I work in emergency services in a nearby city with lots of senior residences and see every day what residents of Fenwick can expect from this complex.

Our infrastructure will have to be replaced, updated, or modified.

I’m talking about water,

sewers, roads and our natural drains in close proximity to this lot.

We will also see emergency services up and down our roads quite often in response to medical calls, accidental and real alarm activations, and many other unknown 911 calls.

Just ask our volunteer Fonthill firefighters who respond to Shorthills and Look Out Village on an almost daily basis.

Parking is also a concern.

This Toronto firm proposes to build a street level and underground parking garage with approximately 76 spots.

I see the overflow of parking at all these residences in other cities.

You have to know there will be family and friends visiting, delivery trucks and service vans coming and going, people looking for a convenient spot to leave their vehicle while they run in to the pharmacy or thinking they can park in front of your home or store while they see the doctor.

And what about our prop-

erty values?

Property values are a little higher here in Fenwick and that is because people want to move here for what this village is, not for how congested it will become!

I’m not against change, just the size of change being proposed.

Councillor Rybiak, who sounds like he`s made up his mind and is in favour of this big complex, had mentioned that this residence would have a heritage look to it in keeping with the present Baxter Hall School House (apartments).

I’d like to use the words of another resident at that meeting: Yes, Baxter School House might retain its heritage look, but what about the rest of Fenwick?

Yield to oncoming condos

BY VOICE STAFF Traffic was briefly halted last Thursday afternoon as crews worked to service a lot earmarked for “Suites on Pelham,” eight luxury condos and two commercial suites.

Developer Antonio Nuziato believes the building will help improve Fonthill, and will be providing a housing option that residents are looking for.

“This is going to cater to a 65+ crowd,” he said.

“The lifestyle will be good because they will be able to walk everywhere.”

According to Nuziato, this is the first structure that is going to be constructed under the Community Improvement Plan for the downtown core.

“The drawings were approved, the town supported me fully, and here we are,” he said.

Garden provides produce for Pelham Cares

HUDAK continued from Page 1 Hudak stated that he had remained uninvolved to this point because he had believed common sense would prevail, and that he had decided to assist residents when he saw that it did not.

“We’re just saying ‘keep the name on the building,’” he told the group. “There’s no cost!”

The MPP spent the meeting facilitating discussion and offering occasional pieces of advice, stressing simplicity and process.

“What they’ll try to do is frustrate you and say there are bylaws and blah-blahblah until your eyes glaze over,” he said.

Kevin Ker has been heavily involved in the issue, committing hours to research, and making presentations to the school board.

“It’s nice to have someone along with us,” said Ker. “He provided advice as

to where we can take this, and his recommendations in terms of process were really worthwhile.”

Ker hopes the meeting will help residents focus their efforts and provide guidance moving forward.

He felt that three key elements arose from the meeting.

“The first thing was to develop a mechanism by which to inform the public about things like the name and the fact that Wellington Heights really did not exist,” he said. “Secondly, we are looking at exactly how we want to take this forward to the ombudsman to initiate a formal investigation. Lastly, we’re going to try and organize a meeting with the local trustee, who should be acting on our behalf to carry this forward.

She voted against this at the board meeting so we want to find out why she is not really following the will of her constituents.”

Given the nature of the business, food banks have historically provided non-perishable foodstuff to those who need their services. But organizations like Pelham Cares and others across the country are now working to find ways to get fresh, nutritious food to clients and their families.

“A typical food bank diet is non-perishables—canned and boxed items—because they have to be stored for longer periods of time,” said Lori Grande of Pelham Cares. “Providing perishables is tricky because they don’t last for very long. But the more sources we have, the better we will be able to meet people’s needs.”

So in an attempt to help stabilize demand, the local charity decided to try growing the produce on their own.

“Having our own garden will be a help,” said Lori.

“We do receive donations of perishable items from the community throughout the summer, but it’s very hit and miss, so we’re going to supplement things this way.”

The garden has been named “The ever-bearing, ever-caring garden.” It was built in partnership with RBC Dominion Securities Inc. who donated $1,000 to its construction.

IN THE NEWS North Pelham geographical survey

The Geological Survey of Canada has received permission to conduct a geophysical survey along Centre Street and Cream Street in North Pelham.

The survey is expected to take four to five days and is scheduled to begin around July 25. The work is part of a groundwater study being carried out collaboratively between the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority and the GSC. The seismic

survey is non-destructive and the equipment consists of two slowly-moving vehicles separated by a 100 meter-long string of sensors towed along the side of the road. The survey work will cover 4-5 km in a day and will progress at a rate slower than idle speed. The survey will result in the temporary restriction of one lane in the immediate vicinity of the survey equipment.

A traffic control company will be engaged to provide appropriate signage and flagmen to direct traffic.

Art show opening

The show features barn art by local artist Joe Hall, handcrafted furniture, orchard cherry blossom paintings, clothing by emerging Canadian designer Juliana Cullen, beaded jewelry and original contemporary paintings by Angie Geiss.

OBITUARY Our beloved Jeanette died peacefully on July 12 at Douglas Memorial Hospital, two weeks before her 78th birthday. Devoted wife of Allan for 53 years; loving mother of David, Carolyn (Bernie Puchalski) and Sandra Walt (Jason); and cherished grandma to Alexandra and Tess.

She is also survived by brother John (Ida), sisters Catherine MacLeod (Robert), and Sheila (Chris Trobridge), many nieces and nephews, and an amazing extended family of cousins

and in-laws. She was predeceased by her parents Alexander and Mary Jane Davidson, and her brother Alex Davidson.

Jeanette was born in Peterhead, Scotland just before the outbreak of the Second World War. Seeking a better life, her family emigrated to Canada in 1947, settling in St. Catharines, Ont., where Jeanette trained for secretarial employment. She worked for many Niagara companies throughout her career, including Sheehan & Rosie, Mosley Insurance,

Fonthill United Church, Pelham Cares and the Voice of Pelham. Jeanette and Allan moved to Fonthill in 1973 as a desired community in which to raise a family. She also provided tireless energy to volunteer work, as proofreader of the Voice, as a member of the Women’s Missionary Society, and as a choir and Ladies Guild member of Kirk on the Hill Presbyterian Church. She delighted in life’s simple things, including knitting, gardening, travelling, singing and spending time with her family, espe-

cially her grandchildren.

Our sincere gratitude to our church family, friends and extended family members who have offered support in so many ways throughout Jeanette’s trials. A special thank you to the caring medical staff at Juravinski Cancer Centre; the Walker Family Cancer Centre; the Welland Hospital complex care unit; Saint Elizabeth home health care; and the Douglas Memorial Hospital palliative care unit.

Cremation has taken place with private interment

at a later date. Visitation will take place on Friday, July 22, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Kirk on the Hill Presbyterian Church, Fonthill.

There will also be visitation at the Kirk on Sat., July 23, from 10 to 11 a.m., to be followed by a Memorial Service of Celebration at 11 a.m.

Reception to follow.

As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Juravinski Cancer Centre, Walker Family Cancer Centre, the memorial fund at Kirk on the Hill, or the charity of one’s choice.

VERY CYCLIST talks to themselves when they ride. Racers analyze, strategize and self-chastise; commuters proselytize, fantasize, and criticize.

Long-distance solo touring riders talk to themselves too, but seldom with a great deal of focus.

Regardless of how emphatically we espouse the glory of slow travel, and the way only bicycling allows total immersion in local landscapes and culture, mostly we tour because we haven’t got a lot else goin’ on.

Listening to the thoughts echoing in one’s head can be scary, as I found out last

week while cycling Ireland’s remote Dingle Peninsula.

“What now, stop for the day in Dingle, or pedal on?

Already ridden 93K, bagged two mountain passes, butt’s feeling fresh.

It’s four o’clock, sun sets at 6:30.”

“24K to Dunquin should take… an hour? Doubt it.

Lots of climbing, likely super-windy around the cape.

But how bad could it be? At 12kph, I still get there before dark.”

“Only three B&Bs in Dunquin. Rough Guide says be careful this time of year, they might be closed for the season. No worries, one’ll be open. Man, the Blasket Islands will be spectacular in the sunset. Finish the Snickers and roll.”

“Amazing. Huge waves bashing the cliffs, serene cows and sheep graze above.

Wonder how many cows fall over the edge? Would marine salvage rules apply to them or would the farmers still own them? Idiot.”

“Serious elevation gain here, down to one-three.

Red sun, yellow sky, purple clouds, jeez this is beautiful.

What’s around the corner?”

“Whoa! The road’s glued to the cliff eighty meters high.

Stomach’s gonna heave; why do I do this?

That half-meter tall rock wall is just the right height to catch my knees on the way over. Make sure I go into the sea head first instead of feet first. Terrific.

What’d you expect? You’re

so stupid.”

“Well, I’m riding on the inside of the road. Anybody wants to pass they can bloody well go around the wrong side. Are they going to revoke my passport for a traffic violation? My brain can’t take this.”

“Unreal wind, naked rock, surf pounding, shafts of sunlight blaze through purple clouds. Gotta take a photo. Yeah, right. Too friggin’ scared to stop pedaling. Okay, bike’s leaned against the rock face. The noise is wild. Not going anywhere near the edge, stay glued to the rock.”

“Oh man, I’ve gotta clipin so I can pedal properly, but then I can’t bail when we get blown into space.
