Gypsy moth infestation appears to grow Nancy Stevenson lives on Canboro Road in Fenwick, and is a frequent walker in the neighbourhood.

She has been alarmed by the damage done to oak, maple, and birch trees by gypsy moth caterpillars in the area.

When she went to Town Hall and asked what was being done, the response was that nothing was planned for the balance of the year. “People need to speak up,” she said.

Similarly, Brenda Close of Mansfield Drive in Fenwick has had an infestation of moths in the trees on her property.

“Last year, I had an arborist come in to trim up some trees, and branches were missing leaves and needles, eaten by caterpillars. My roses were eaten as well. The caterpillars were underneath, where the birds can’t see them,” said Close.

“Last year our yard had hundred of brown moths flying around in the summer. They are back this year. And our neighbours’ yards, which back onto Carolinian forest, were

Corrections at the top: We managed to drop a Beamer last week, merging two former officeholders into one in our story about Sidney Beamer, candidate for Pelham Town Council's Ward 1. In fact, it was Doug Beamer, Sidney's father-in-law, who served 30 years as an alderman, while it was Ralph Beamer (Sidney's husband's cousin) who was alderman and then mayor...More candidates: Since this time last week, four more candidates have announced—three for Pelham Town Council, one for Regional Chair. On the Pelham side, incumbents John Durley and James Lane filed their nomination papers for Wards 3 and 1 respectively, while political newcomer and former Fenwick Pie owner Marianne Stewart is running in Ward 1 as well, making it the most contested ward so far.

(See Stewart's interview on page 3 this week. Look for chats with Durley and Lane to come.) On the Regional side, Mayor Augustyn tweeted his entry into the Regional Chair race, and briefly commandeered the Tim Horton's on Merrittville Highway to make his announcement speech...One's in, one's out: The latest speculation—as always to be taken with large chunks of sea salt—has former Pelham councillor and federal MP Malcolm Allen not running for Pelham mayor after all.

This would be convenient for Councillor Gary Accursi, who, after months of thinking about it, is said to be on his way to file his nomination papers practically as we speak. And then there's the perpetually enigmatic Fonthill Sobeys owner Ron Kore. Mayor? Council?...It's a magnificent building: The new Meridian Community Centre does not fail to impress. Yes, I know. It certainly should, you say, at $36 million and counting. But credit where credit is due. There will be plenty of time to sort through the issues that remain. For the moment, though, we can all agree that the facility gives every indication of delivering on what was promised—happily minus the interlocking pavers...New Fonthill eats: Former co-owner Natalie Stickles confirms that an English-style pub—the "Butcher & Banker" is coming to Moku's old space. A new restaurant—"1856 Social"—is coming to the former Pub on the Hill, and "Root and Bone" to the former Zest...Summerfest: It's this weekend. Use plenty of sunscreen...Good reading: A belated thank-you to Brian Gerrard for the news clippings. Count on California to make a ballot interesting!

THE VOICE POLL Community Centre time travel

In the first of what we intend to be a regular poll tracking reader opinion about October's Municipal Election, last week we asked you who you would vote for if the election were held today.

As of press time on Monday, a total of 286 votes were cast.

For Pelham Mayor, former Town Councillor Marvin Junkin was the clear favourite, taking exactly 50% of the vote. Retired federal government administrator Carla Baxter came last at approximately 9%, while undecideds were at 15%.

For Regional Chair, incumbent Alan Caslin earned 35% of the votes in a more competitive field. Pelham Mayor Dave Augustyn was just pipped at the post by former Welland Mayor Damian Goulbourne. It's anyone's race by these numbers, though, as 18% remain undecided.

Although safeguards are in place to discourage multiple votes, this is a self-selected poll, meaning it has no scientific validity compared to formal surveys by established polling firms. Numbers following candidates' names are votes received by each.

BY VOICE STAFF As questions continue to mount regarding an email that Pelham Mayor Dave Augustyn quietly sent to a District School Board of Niagara trustee last summer, Augustyn has agreed to address the issue at a public meeting scheduled for this evening, Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Fenwick.

HEN I WAS young, my father and I would go for long drives along the rural routes of Pelham. We’d blast George Thurgood and roll down the windows because we loved the smell of the breeze, the sensation of crisp Niagara wind beating our cheeks and tangling our hair against our summer-kissed skin.

My father was not a sentimental man. He worked in factories and had a Gordon Lightfoot mustache and never shed tears over injuries.

Yet something about the Pelham landscape, the hilly backdrop to his childhood and the childhoods of our ancestors, drew him in. He’d stop by a farm or a gathering of woods and, surrendering his manly veneer, tell me a story about the town.

This place is precious. This is the earth that granted us life. Here is the place where we happened upon love or here is a site of devastation.

On one particular drive sometime in the late ‘90s we stopped at a tree with a plaque.

“This tree looks dead,” I said to my father.

“It sure is getting there, Julie.”

A construction error was discovered following the opening of a traffic calming chicane on Haist Street north of Hwy 20 last Monday that prevented large vehicles from passing through.

One resident living in the neighbourhood said he contacted the Town after seeing a small schoolbus get stuck as it tried to get through the new traffic calming measure. Later that day while driving behind a cement truck, he said that he became concerned for the public’s safety when the truck had to turn around because it couldn’t get through.

Petition-inspired changes coming to 2017 Summerfest

Representatives from the Pelham Summerfest committee Candy Ashbee and Bill Gibson presented council with a final report on the 2016 Summerfest at the Council meeting on Monday, Nov. 21.

Prompted by a story in the Voice in August about a merchant petition to move Summerfest from Pelham Street, in September Town staff met with various stakeholders to hear their complaints, promising at the time that changes in the way Summerfest was mounted would be con-

sidered.

The main concerns identified during the community engagement process were security, parking, ensuring customer can access all businesses in town, and liability for damages. How to get all Pelham Street businesses to participate and finding ways to make it beneficial for them to set up a booth were also determined to be of high priority for the committee as they plan for next year’s event.

Gibson told Council that the committee is addressing these concerns in a variety of ways. To improve parking, they intend to create bet-

ter signage for out-of-town visitors to designated parking areas and shuttle services. To make participation in Summerfest more enticing to local businesses, they plan to implement a tiered-charge for booths. Under the new system, Pelham Street business owners will be charged the least, other local businesses will pay a slightly higher fee, and vendors from outside Pelham will pay the most. In response to more specific issues for individual businesses, they will also slightly alter the footprint of the event and make adjustments to security.

Another way the committee plans

to improve the 2017 Summerfest is by sponsoring and working with the organizers of the Thursday Night Bandshell Concert series to select the artist performing on the first night of Summefest. They also intend to make more use of the smartphone app they launched in 2016.

"We are really going to push it this year," Ashbee said.

“It really helps to get people to see what events there are so they can plan out where they are going.

Next was a walk to the newsagents to pay for the daily delivery of the Daily Mirror. As I said, Dad was a printer, but when he was 37 he had been rejected for a job, as being too old, by the printers of the Beano.

For that reason, my favourite comic was not allowed in the house, but while I was paying the papers, the newsagent let me have a 'shoofty' at the Beano. I'd explained my predicament and he understood completely.

Sundays were different again. Dad would play golf on summer mornings and billiards in winter. Then he'd stop for a 'refresher' at the local and would pick up the prawns, cockles, winkles or whelks we'd be having for tea later. Meanwhile, Mum was roasting the 'joint' and potatoes. I got to make the Yorkshire pud, and mint

As part of the annual Apple Day campaign, Scouting youth of all ages will be trading apples for donations.

The yearly fundraising drive is an important way for young Scouts to connect with the communities they are serving, says Leah Marie of Scouts Canada.

BY VOICE STAFF The District School Board of Niagara is requesting that the Town of Pelham cede a portion of Cherry Ridge Park for use as a soccer field to serve the students of the new Wellington Heights Public School, formerly the E. W. Farr Memorial Public School, in Fenwick.

Currently under renovation and expansion, the new school will combine students and staff from the previous school and Pelham Centre, where classes are being held while construction continues.

Two letters, containing virtually identical text but signed by different authorities, were sent last week to nearby residents of the park, as well as to parents of Pelham Centre students.

“The DSBN is currently building onto Wellington Heights Public School on Alsop Drive,” states the letter. “The size of the school's addition means the existing small soccer field will be eliminated.

Dr. Anne Anderson, csj, Chair of the Board of Directors of St. Joseph’s Health System (SJHS), in consultation with the Diocese of Hamilton, announced on Monday that Dr. Tom Stewart is the new incoming Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SJHS and Niagara Health.

Stewart is currently serving in an integrated system role as Joint Chief of Staff for Niagara Health, where he is also Executive Vice-President Medical, at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and at Haldimand War Memorial Hospital. He begins his new role on August 1st, 2018.

Stewart will be President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health System, which spans six member organizations with multiple sites including: St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener, St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Guelph, St. Joseph’s Home Care, St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre in Brantford and St. Joseph’s Villa in Dundas. He will also act as CEO of Niagara Health. Together, these organizations have a total budget of $1.3 billion and account for approximately 13,000 staff and physicians and 2,800 beds.

An academic physician, Stewart is currently a professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University. While at the University of Toronto, he led a number of international clinical trials leading to publication in the New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of the American Medical Association.

“It’s been a cumulative thing. It gets to the point where you say to yourself that if none of these other people are going to step up and open their mouths in a reasonable fashion, somebody has to do it…so here I am.”

Stewart has fought for local causes in the past, one being an effort to save and restore the Maple Acre Library in Fenwick. She was not happy with all the results of the renovation, completed last year.

“It was supposed to blend with the overall look of the community. What they’ve built doesn’t do that,” she said.

“The Town doesn’t seem to do their research properly. The library was a design-build for $1 million, but things had to be redesigned. There were engineering and architectural issues. If all these little things are happening, what other big things are happening? Was there a per-

formance bond on the project?”

Originally from Welland, Stewart has lived in Pelham since 1980. She said she worked for two levels of government and a board of education in the past, but considers herself a business person and entrepreneur.

She previously owned the Fenwick Pie Company and bake shop, but sold it last year.

“I was in business for 30 years. I know what it is to work within your means. If you spend more than you make, you’re done,” she said.

The new community centre raises many questions for Stewart.

“The Meridian name will apparently be on the community centre forever. Why was such a deal made? Why did we lose out on future naming revenue? What is the real cost of the facility?

When will it be disclosed?”

The first thing any new council needs to do, said Stewart, is commission a complete forensic audit to cover at least the last four years of Town finances.

“The audit needs to be put out to tender. A lot of stuff

“We have no reserve funds. Where did the money go? We have two roads we can’t fix. I think [Town staff] are just stalling, because they don’t have the money. We are not being given the real numbers. I believe we still owe money on the two fire stations and the library expansion.

We need those debts paid down, so we are left with just [the community centre].”

In response to pressure from concerned residents, says Stewart, “the Town did a limited audit on basically one land transaction. They had a public meeting where they provided a lot of pretty meaningless information.

They promised us a follow-up meeting for ques-

tions and answers, then they cancelled the meeting.

It’s bait-and-switch.”

A second audit, said Stewart, should be conducted on public-owned properties.

“The town has assets— the Old Town Hall, the old arena, the model railway building, the work centre.

We need a facilities audit so we know what we have, what condition they are in,

and what it costs to maintain them.”

She is opposed to selling off the old arena on Haist Street.

“Don’t sell that building with its eight acres. The Town is growing. If we sell off parkland, we’ll never get it back in that neighbourhood. We can’t just sell it off because we’re broke.”

FULLY EXPECT SOME people will think, from what I am about to say, that I am from the Dark Ages. But frankly, I don’t care about that anymore.

I firmly believe that there will be a raft of people who will agree with what follows. But, like my former self, they will be reluctant to publicly admit it. However, if a remedy is to be found they must speak up—now!

I have had it up to here with this so-called smart phone technology. I must speak out before the pandemic spreads further and irreparably harms our collective mental health and civility. But before I continue, if the occasion should arise, please be sure to ask my surgeon to set aside her cellphone before sewing up the incision. I would find it a nuisance to have her favorite ringtone emanating from inside my torso should someone call that doctor – especially after hours.

The following is not an exaggeration and you darn well know it.

Almost everywhere we go, we encounter people who have a cellphone stuck to their ear. Often this occurs in the most unlikely locations and dangerous

circumstances. Recently, I countenanced one half of a man’s conversation in the washroom cubicle talking

I see many people on the sidewalks totally focused on that tiny screen with little regard for oncoming pedestrians who are forced to step aside to avoid a headon collision. I regularly observe fully loaded semis rumbling along the thoroughfares with the drivers holding a cellphone to their ear. One hand on the phone and the other lighting up a ciggy.

Who in heavens name is in control of that behemoth of potential destruction?

Letters Gypsy moths in Pelham—we can do our part I was out walking the dog today and saw thousands of moths flying about in Cherry Ridge. Upon closer examination, I found multiple females and newly laid egg masses on many of the trees along the roadways and many more flying around houses all along Sandra Drive. [Editor's note: See photo on page 22.]

The sheer numbers of moths and egg masses mean that 2019 has potential to be a horrific year for injury to ornamentals from gypsy moth larvae. The attached photo shows what the egg masses and moths look like. I hope all homeowners will take the time to examine trees in their yards and along the boulevards for egg masses. Crushing/scraping-off the egg masses will help reduce the potential population for next year. The masses are tan in colour as the actual eggs are covered by hair of the female for protection against predators and adverse weather Egg masses can be found on literally anything. I know Pelham did some spraying this year in parts of the Town, but from what I have seen lately Fenwick could be a real mess in 2019! So homeowners if you could lend a hand by getting rid of the egg masses your ornamentals and nearby trees will thank you.

Sex-ed decision a mistake I object to the regressive plan of the Conservative government to withdraw the evidenced-based sex education program in our schools. Imagine, using information that is 20 years old! It does not consider the effects of internet use related to pornography, cyberbullying, texting. This knee-jerk reaction is not a considered measure to address the current needs of children. They need to know

Incredibly, I see young school-aged children getting off their school buses with a phone to their ear or in their hands playing a favorite game. I don’t envy the teachers of these youngsters coping with the challenge of separating the students from their phones during math class. Eventually, the school bus and playground warning signs need to be changed to “Watch for children on their cellphones.”

When at the checkout in the local grocery, why must I listen to half of an inane conversation emanating from the shopper behind me while she is tossing groceries onto the conveyor belt? From what I and the others in the lineup could gather her stylist told her something juicy about her neighbour. No doubt, that will become the next community scandal and spread via cellphone faster than the fastest speed dialer.

Doesn’t it annoy you when in a conversation the person you’re talking to taps on their cellphone and declares what you just said is wrong?

They smugly declare that Google says it was 1939 and not 1938, as you just mentioned. The next time that happens, grab that damnable piece of technology and throw it into the garburator.

Here’s a scary incident. A fellow golfer inadvertently left his cellphone in my golf bag. His service provider gave him my address so as he could retrieve his cell from

I firmly believe that repealing the new sex-ed curriculum is a huge mistake.

With the new curriculum focusing on key areas such as gender identity, LGBTQ community, internet safety from predators and cyberbullying, sexting and

most importantly consent, we will be leaving the next generation in the dark.

This curriculum is meant to prevent intolerance and abusive behaviour in the future by educating children at an early age about such topics as consent. If

As we come near the end of this missive of misgivings, I admit that I have not mastered the use of smartphones. Even the so-called user-friendly units. A compounding reason is the fact that if I had one, who am I going to call every five minutes throughout the day? Obviously, frequent users have social networks much and beyond my lifelong grid of friends and acquaintances. I have been badly beaten at “I spy with my little eye” and so, why would I take on the endless array of mind-boggling techno games that pre-teenagers have downloaded to their phones —and while riding a bike, no less.

Despite my children’s urgings to “Get with it, Dad,” I have come a long way in the adoption of new technologies. I just finished reading the manual for our new electric can opener and feel confident about opening a can of soup without harming myself or others nearby. I fondly remember the time when I mastered the dial telephone. Proudly, I have almost come to grips with the menu on the tiny LED screen on landline.

Most often I can answer a call before it goes to some sort of recording device. I haven’t yet been able to retrieve these secreted messages. But, someday soon I may discover the message from LOTTO 649 advising me I won the million-dollar

jackpot and my 365 days to claim the prize have passed.

Now I must close the lid on my typewriter, re-ink the ribbon, and put it away for another day.

The very first of the steps to recovery is to turn your cellphone off right now. If you can’t do that then you should enroll immediately.

the golf bag in the trunk of my car in my driveway. Is it any wonder that I am paranoid about this perplexing technology? Almost anyone, nearly anywhere, likely anytime, can determine one’s whereabouts to within one meter of a cellphone’s location. Be careful—the camera on your phone may be turned on and someone could be watching you right this minute. Smartphones should not be smarter than people and monitoring your every move.

There is another annoyance stemming from these vexatious pieces of technology. They have turned previously normal, humble people into some sort of eccentric egomaniacs. These people can be seen anywhere and everywhere snapping selfies with reckless abandon. They can then confront their equally techno-savvy friends with an endless slide show of meaningless photos.

It’s not such a lovely experience to be endlessly looking up their noses through unattended nose hair. Eww... again.

Here’s another peculiarity that is symptomatic of the cellphone plague. Some people have miniature handsfree headsets almost permanently inserted in their ear. Apparently, such people need to be in continuous contact with command central should the earth’s orbit ever misalign and threaten to collide with another planet. I recently encountered one of these self-anointed Mensa candidates in a drugstore. He appeared to be

“Gwen came to us this year with a big interest in high jumping,” he said.

“She had done well in Grade 8 and wanted to pursue it for the high school season She ended up having a great high school season, making it all the way to OFSAA [the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championship] and finishing fourth.”

The Grade 10 student also won the midget girls Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association crown, but she is still searching for a new personal best.

Gwen has continued to train through the summer and competed recently at the Royal Canadian Legion Outdoor Championships at the Niagara Olympic Club. Gwen qualified for the provincial meet with her performance at the District B championships June 16.

“I want to get better and I want to place better at OFSAA next year,” she said.

She was looking forward to competing in the provincials in both high jump and triple jump.

“I see potential in her to do more events and I am tempted to start training her for the heptathlon,” McDougall said. “She’s talented and athletic enough that she could do anything and be good at it.”

In addition to track and field, Gwen is a competitive volleyball player, indoor and on the beach. Her Niagara Rapids team was ranked as high as second in the province this season and Gwen and her partner recently won a beach volleyball event in New York.

So far, she has been able to keep training in both sports.

“Beach volleyball we can practice at any time because it is just the two of us, but I don’t know how indoor is going to work,” she said.

She was also a competitive gymnast until the end of Grade 8 and that training is still paying dividends.

“There’s a lot of strength training and we used to do a lot of running and leg workouts so that helped a lot with my jumping.”

Other local athletes competing in the provincials are Eric Campbell, Emma McDougall, Michael Ivanov, Autumn Bigger, Remeny Gavanac, Callan Saldutto, Denis Tzvetkov, Blake Devinney and Maya Fetic.

The track meet attracted more than 400 athletes from across the province ranging in age from under 16 (midget) to under 18 (youth).

At stake were spots on Team Ontario to compete in the national championships which start Aug. 10 in Brandon, Man. The province of Ontario is divided into eight districts and each district is bringing between 40 and 45 athletes.

Burn bans across region

The Pelham Fire Chief issued a burn ban following extremely dry outdoor conditions for the Town of Pelham until further notice.

During this time, all outdoor burning and fireworks are prohibited. Similar bans are in place for Wainfleet, West Lincoln, and Niagara Falls.

Maple Street closure

From July 17 through August 10, Maple Street from Kilman to Sixteen Road will be closed, with local access only from Kilman. Motorists are advised to use Balfour Street as a detour. The closure is to permit the replacement of road-crossing culverts.

Rice Road closure

Motorists and the general public are hereby advised that Regional Road 54 (Rice Road) between Merritt Road and Port Robinson Road will be closed to through traffic starting on Monday, July 23 until Friday, August 3. A full closure is necessary for the removal of the existing cross culvert and the installation of a new box culvert to service a new subdivision and future storm sewers on Rice Road. Both local residents and emergency services will have access only either from Merritt Road or Port Robinson Road during this closure. No through traffic will be permitted.

Augustyn is in

Pelham Mayor Dave Augustyn announced through Twitter last Thursday morning that he intended to file nomination papers to run for Chair of Niagara Region.

The tweet was one of a series in which Augustyn touted his record over 12 years as the town’s mayor.

In a follow-up tweet, Augustyn wrote that the focus of his campaign will be “integrity, prosperity, compassion.” The Voice has invited the Mayor to sit down for an extended interview.

Durley and Lane file

Ward 3 Councillor John Durley and Ward 1 Councillor James Lane have filed nomination papers to run for election to Pelham Town Council. Lane was not elected to Council, but rather appointed to fill the vacancy left upon Councillor Marvin Junkin’s resignation late last year. Durley is running for re-election, having served some 15 years on Council after winning for the first time in 2003. Election day is October 22.

Pelham home sales down 30%

The Niagara Association of Realtors reported 698 property sales processed through the Multiple Listing Service system in June.

This represents a 9.9% decrease in sales across Niagara compared to June of last year. Pelham saw the average house sale price decrease almost $40,000 from last year ($543,365 in June 2018 vs. $582,509 in June 2017). The number of new listings (53) and sales (23) in Pelham were also down from June 2017—approximately 10% and 30% respectively. Houses this June sat on the market for 39 days, compared to 23 days last year. At $825,369, the average sale price in Niagara-on-the-Lake continues to be the highest in Niagara. Carolyn Bones-Poley, Chief Executive Officer of The Niagara Association of Realtors, did not respond to requests for comment.

Tour du Lac

Risk remains low, but ticks and Lyme Disease on the rise Ticks and Lyme Disease aren't something to take lightly. Especially if you live in Niagara.

Caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium and carried by black-legged deer ticks, it often starts out in humans as a bullseye-shaped rash at the bite mark. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, headache, and muscle and joint pain. In rare cases, the disease can be fatal, to both people and pets. If left untreated it can cause chronic and debilitating cardiac, neurological, and arthritic conditions.

One of the challenges with Lyme Disease is that it’s often difficult to get a confirmed diagnosis, since symptoms mimic a number of other diseases, including Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, MS, ALS, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's.

There have been approximately a dozen confirmed cases of Lyme Disease in Niagara annually over the past several years. According to Dr. Mustafa Hirji, Acting Medical Officer of Health for Niagara Region, fewer than five cases of Lyme in humans have been recorded so far this year in the region. There were 19 confirmed cases in 2017.

The standard treatment for Lyme is ingestion of antibiotics like doxycycline.

istered promptly after infection,” said Hirji.

“We have a lot more understanding and knowledge these days regarding the disease. We know in Niagara that the hot spots for Lyme are the Wainfleet Bog, Rotary Park [St. Catharines] and Point Abino [near Fort Erie].”

Hirji said that of local ticks found on humans, 94% are dog ticks and only 6% are black-legged deer ticks and potential Lyme carriers.

“In Niagara, we offer a free testing program to analyze ticks for the disease,” said Hirji. 3500 ticks were submitted for investigation last year.

A key goal for Niagara Health is prevention, said Hirji. Ticks do not like heat, and prefer cool, dense vegetation, so it is recommended that lawns be well-trimmed. Light-coloured clothing makes it easier to spot ticks, and use of repellents containing DEET and Icaridin are effective.

Since ticks rest a few hours on the host before they bite, a shower will often wash them away, said Hirji.

Doctors Bob Perry and Kadri Uukkivi of the Dunnville Veterinary Clinic are well aquainted with Lyme in pets, having a “hot spot” close to home at Rock Point, located at the mouth of the

Grand River near Dunnville.

“Long Point on Lake Erie, near Port Rowan, was the first flash point for Lyme in Ontario,” noted Perry.

“We’ve seen an upsurge in the last few years of people bringing in pets to be checked for the disease.

Luckily, 95% of dogs testing positive for Lyme will not get symptoms or be classified as clinically sick.

Dogs appear to have a natural resistance.”

Uukkivi said that birds and animals can transport ticks great distances. Pesticides are not appropriate, since toxic chemicals would likely kill many beneficial insects as well as ticks.

She recommended the blog wormsandgerms.com, which promotes safe pet ownership, edited by University of Guelph/Ontario Veterinary College veterinarian and pathobiologist Dr. Scott Weese.

Weese launched his website Petsandticks.com in 2016, and developed an online tool called Pet Tick Tracker to help monitor changes in tick populations.

Corroborating Dr. Perry’s statement, Weese said that only 5% of dogs exposed to an infected tick will get Lyme.

“But it is a growing problem, and hot spots in the province are spreading.”

He encourages pet owners to check their pets for ticks regularly. Effective medications are available from veterinarians.

MCC "sneak peek" wows Saturday open house at new centre draws appreciative reviews

HE OLD PELHAM ARENA sits forlornly on Haist Street.

If the current Town Council has its way, it will soon likely be for sale, having served the community for the last 40 years.

It has featured many memorable events and tournaments over the decades.

But that was then. This is now.

Two new arenas, packaged into a 143,000 sq. ft. community centre bearing the name of its $1 million sponsor, Meridian Credit Union, sits off Highway 20 in East Fonthill. It is, according to its proponents, just what Pelham needs to bolster its hometown economy and spirit.

The public got a “sneak peek” at the facilities last Saturday, as the doors were opened and visitors given self-tour maps to aid in their wandering.

By the end of the event, some 860 guests had come through, according to Mayor Dave Augustyn.

The two arenas (both NHL-size, with seating for 1000 and 100 respectively) are on the ground floor, along with a multipurpose gymnasium, change rooms, washrooms, and an expansive atrium lobby open to the second floor.

A walking track, special functions area, offices, a community meeting room, and a large multi-purpose space with kitchen are on the second level.

Given the green light in spring 2016, the centre is predicted to open on-time and on-budget by its Oversight Committee. Ball Construction built the facility, which was designed by Petroff Partnership Architecture.

The interior is sleekly modern with industrial touches, the colour palette mostly muted shades of white, tan, and gray. As Town Council intended, when it called for a “world-class” design, the facility’s international style could as easily double as an airport terminal in Stockholm, or a corporate headquarters in Dallas.

The facility shone on Saturday, despite overcast skies and intermittent rain showers. A steady stream of visitors arrived over the course of the four-hour open house.

Mayor Dave Augustyn was in the foyer, greeting guests. A man waved to him and said, “Super job—above my expectations.”

Noah Sabourin and his father Tim are from St. Catharines, but they were on site to check out the new ice surfaces.

“It’s a huge difference, compared to the old rink,” said Noah, a minor hockey player. His dad added, “It’s a beautiful facility, with great change rooms. We travel for a lot of tournaments, and you always appreciate modern change rooms.”

A senior citizen, who did not want to be named, said, “Two rinks let you have tournaments here in Pelham, which means less travel and cost for our local families. And it’s a revenue source for our town.”

Two older gentlemen commented, “It’s an impressive building, and hopefully will be good for the community…as long as they have the people to fill it. Families with young children will certainly appreciate it, but there are a lot of seniors in the area who may have limited use of it.”

Pelham Town Council candidate Sidney Beamer had mixed views.

“There’s a lot here that we can work with,” she said. “Although I think that if they had installed health department-approved kitchens, it would have allowed for a greater variety of functions.”

Senior Olya Schwadschenko, who has the aid of a walker, thought that there might be accessibility concerns for those with limited mobility.

“It’s a long way to the parking lot, with few handicapped spots,” she said. “I think the building is beautiful, but don’t know yet if I can use it.”

Four other seniors, who also preferred not to be identified, were disappointed that the centre had no pool.

“This facility, with its rinks and gym, is for the kids,” said one man.

“We wanted a pool. The YMCA in Welland is very congested, and the Fonthill outdoor pool only operates in the summer. We’ve been vocal about our opposition to the design since the beginning. There are a lot of people over 60 in this community—are any of us going to use the arenas? We’re disappointed they didn’t take the existing demographics more into consideration.”

The man’s wife added, “The Town felt there was adequate consultation with the public, but we feel it was already a done deal. Our friends just moved here from Kenora, which has the same population as Fonthill, and that town has just built a beautiful facility with a great rink and pool, a children’s pool, a physical therapist room, and gymnasium. It better serves all in their community.”

Mayor Augustyn said he had heard complaints about the lack of a pool in the design countless times.

“The whole facility is based on a business case analysis that we worked on for of a number of years, included a telephone survey, and data from user groups. The report indicated that we had demand for 100% prime-time ice on one rink, and 70% on a second pad. We now have 100% sold prime time ice on one pad, and 95% on the other.”

Augustyn acknowledged that residents wanted a local pool.

“They expressed that desire, but they’re not willing to pay for it.

Costs would have been another six or seven million dollars to put a pool in, plus a million annually to operate it. Which was outlandish, because we didn’t have the sustaining demand for it. So that’s why we didn’t include a pool. Maybe a hotel will be built in the area and will have a pool available—but a pool is so expensive, and given the proximity of other pools it just didn’t make good business sense.”

Augustyn was jubilant on the topic of operating costs, saying, “We expect the new community centre to be well under the maintenance cost threshold that council set, which was $200,000. I expect the net cost to be closer to the $100,000 mark. There are all kinds of efficiencies in this new building.”

The $36.2 million, 143,000square-foot facility’s completion has involved a community fundraising campaign, with a $3-million target over 95 percent attained, according to the Town.

While serious questions remain over the centre’s economics, and its financial sustainability in the long term, such issues took a back seat on Saturday.

The delighted faces of young athletes—8, 10, 16 years old—as they got their first glimpses of two mint-condition arenas, and a perfectly polished, enormous gymnasium, spoke volumes. As imagined whistles blew, and future final buzzers sounded, glory was in their eyes, and it looked wonderful. ◆

Pelham Town Council reacts Mayor Dave Augustyn We received overwhelmingly positive (98%) commendations from the 860 people who toured the MCC today. Staff and the volunteers and professional consultants and donors who designed, built, and funded our amazing community home deserve every one of the smiles, hugs, and fist pumps that councillors and I received today.

Councillor Gary Accursi The Meridian Community Centre is an amazing facility that will become the hub of social, cultural and recreational activity for the entire community; from youngsters to seniors. It will transform how community members interact; will provide programs and activities for children, teens, adults and seniors and will be a source of pride for the entire community. It will be the home for our champions; whatever their endeavours. The centre was designed by the community for the community and my thanks to all the volunteers and staff who worked so hard to bring this tremendous project to reality.

Members of the ADAC Committee and the Oversight Committee deserve special thanks. On time and on budget as well! What a fantastic accomplishment! This is truly unheard of in the municipal world. To all our donors: thank you for supporting your community of today and of the future. The Meridian Community Centre will stand as a testament to what can be achieved by a small town! While I am excited by the promise that the centre holds, I am also cognizant of the challenges that the operations bring. We all—Council, staff and the public—must work together to achieve our business plan which I believe is realistic. We must and will oversee the operations with the same diligence that the capital project was managed. I am convinced by doing that, we will achieve the same outstanding success.

Councillor Richard Rybiak Pelham's Meridian Community Centre is a tremendous civic achievement and a testament to the people of Pelham. Our residents identified the need for a better and larger hub for community activities years ago, and then participated in the development of a business plan, the design of the facility, the oversight of the construction of the project, and even the direct donation of funding to support the plan. Elected successive councils kept a focus on the objective, developed a sensible financial plan, created a project development plan, but, while Council and staff of the Town may have managed the process, credit for this achievement goes to our population who saw the need, provided the resources, encouraged continued progress through issues and impediments, ultimately creating reality out of the vision of a place in which to pursue recreational and cultural activities for generations to come. Pelham's strategic plan includes a vision that we be the "most vibrant, innovative, and caring community in Niagara.” The accomplishment of the MCC is clearly a demonstration of all aspects of that vision. Congratulations to all of us in Pelham for a job well done.

Friday the 13th At 65 years and counting, bike run attracts thousands

On any given Friday the 13th, but particularly when summer temperatures turn tropical, the peaceful beachside community of Port Dover awakens to the roar of hundreds of thousands of bikers swarming their town in a metal buzz, all wanting to party hard.

“From Far and Away,” the slogan for this year’s 65th Bike Run to Dover, captures the enormity of this motorcycle extravaganza known across Canada and parts of the U.S. While bikers have many philosophies, most of which are turned into tattoos, a country music lyric, or T-shirt monograms, for Lisa Tache, Advertising Manager with Clare’s Cycle and Sports in Fenwick, the Thunder Run is, “Just the way we relate to our customers.”

Tache has been helping to organize the bike rally with HTZ-FM, already in place when Tache started at Clare’s in 2002.

There are giant tents and a meet-and-greet team, where motorcyclists pick up their new T-shirts, patches and pins for members of the Harley Owners Group (HOG). Seamstresses on site will actually sew patches on for you, Tache said.

There are also new parts and accessories and demonstration rides on the latest Harley Davidson models.

“It’s kind of like a rally within a rally when you really think about it,” she said.

The huge merchandising event means, “work for us, but a lot of fun for everybody else.”

This event is sometimes difficult to plan, because one never knows how many riders will participate each year. Friday the 13th has activities running at full throttle throughout the day, from different groups, businesses and organizations, but Tache said, “We got our own thing going on.”

The monetary appeal of the event also attracts an unsavory element, as the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) advised the public to be wary of purchasing motorcycle attire and accessories from biker gangs. The OPP wanted to remind the public that some gangs are criminally connected, and buying their products contributes to illegal activities like loansharking, racke-

Two Soos on ballot

Steven Soos is taking a second shot at municipal politics but this time, he didn’t come alone. His younger brother, 19-yearold Zachary Soos is running for the Niagara Cath-

olic District School Board Trustee seat in Welland.

The older Soos will challenge for the Welland City Council Seat in Ward 4. Both Brothers are the great-grandsons of Niagara-area politician, Frank Soos. Steven, 24, currently works as a Support Staff for the District School Board of Niagara.

He is a former child and youth worker in a group home setting. Zachary is a Welland Minor Baseball coach, and will attend Brock University in the fall studying Business Administration. According to a Soos news release, this is the first time in Welland civic election history that brothers will simultaneously appear on the ballot.

“Do we really need a little white bus running around pretty much empty ten hours a day?”

She referenced a pilot project in a community north of Toronto, in which she asserted customers pay an Uber driver $3 for a ride, and the Uber driver bills the town for the difference.

“This eliminates bus maintenance, fuel, insurance, driver salary, and cost of the vehicle,” she said.

“There is more than one way to provide local transit.”

As for future mega-projects in Pelham, Stewart said, “I don't think there will be any sizable ones in the near future. But I believe at such time they come about, they should be decided by referendum.”

BANKS continued from Page 21 one robber who rolled his nickel-plated gun around his finger while his companion searched for the money. The bandits managed to get away with $8000, but an additional $7500 hidden under blotters in a teller drawer remained safe at the bank.

The get-away car was parked outside the bank, and there was some discussion about shooting out the tires, but the rob-

bers escaped down into the Shorthills.

After several months of detective work, the three robbers were caught and brought to trial. Each of the bank employees was awarded $100 to purchase a new suit or dress.

A second robbery occurred in Fenwick in 2011 when an unarmed bandit entered the bank, demanded money, then made off on foot down Church Street.

The only “break-in” that the Fonthill bank suffered occurred in 1964 when a dump truck, which collided with an am-

bulance at the intersection, sheered off a hydro pole and crashed into the north wall of the bank. The wall collapsed, together with part of the upstairs apartment. Fortunately no one was hurt and bank business resumed the next day at a temporary location on North Pelham Street while the damaged building was reconstructed.

Today, Fonthill boasts no fewer than five financial institutions, but alas, Fenwick has said goodbye to the only bank that has ever served the community. ◆

Pelham Friends Church, continuing its tradition of cycling events, is introducing a week-long kids' cycling camp in August.

The church’s pastor, Mathew Bradbury, is a longtime cycling enthusiast who is particularly excited for the summer kids camp.

“In the past we’ve had well-run camps with stations, where the kids go through a lot of different things,” said Bradbury. “We tried to encourage compassion, development of unique gifts, living healthily, and stewardship. This year we

want to do the same things, but with bikes.”

The camp is for kids entering Grades 4 through 8 and will run for three hours each afternoon during the week of August 13. It will consist of three days of riding, a day of safety, and a day of mechanical training, with a nominal fee of $30 dollars for the week.

Bradbury said that the program’s aim for the kids is to have a good time, but also to end the week having learned a lot.

Pieces From Our Past

A short history of Pelham banks “Neither a borrow nor a lender be” may have been good advice in Shakespeare’s day, but a modern economy depends on credit.

Cash was scarce in nineteenth century Canada, and if you needed to borrow money you tended to rely on family members.

There were some banks: the Niagara District Bank operated on the peninsula from 1853 to 1875, but it wasn’t until the 1900s that every small town had a branch bank.

In Pelham, this happened in 1905, when the Union Bank of

Canada opened for business in Fonthill. A few days later, the Imperial Bank also established a branch in Fonthill. The population of Fonthill at this time was too small to support two banks so the Union Bank decamped to Fenwick.

The original Fenwick bank was located on the north side of Canboro Road on a lot leased from William Fry, who also owned the building next door (Wm. Fry and

Son). In 1909, the balance on hand at the time of the Fenwick bank audit was $402.47. In 1925, the Union Bank merged with the Royal Bank.

The Royal Bank bought the Union Bank property, but by the early 1950s the building proved too small. The Royal Bank bought a property across the road and built a new, larger bank. The bank assets were transferred from one side of the street to the other late at night, escorted by security guards with guns.

In the 1960s, the W. H. Fry and

Son store burned down.

The Royal Bank purchased the lot of the Fry Store, demolished their building next door and proceeded to construct the present building/bank at the corner of Canboro Road and Maple Street. The obsolete bank across the road was sold to Avondale.

Avondale combined these two buildings into their present store on Canboro Road.

Back in Fonthill, the Imperial Bank had built a large brick building on the site of the old registry office on the south west corner of Hwy 20 and Pelham Street. This bank had a unique “security system.” The second floor of the bank was an apartment where the bank accountant lived. In one corner of the bedroom floor was a hole which offered a clear view of the area where the bank safe was located. If suspicious sounds were heard in the bank, a rifle could be aimed through the hole and fired if needed.

In 1955, the Imperial Bank was enlarged along Hwy 20, nearly doubling its size. In 1961, the Imperial Bank became known at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, and in 1975 relocated to the east side of Pelham Street.

though. In 1947 there was a holdup at the Fenwick bank. According to George Hannah, the bank manager at the time, the thieves seemed very nervous and amateurish. They had failed to bring enough bags to carry off their loot and had to use a typewriter cover for the pennies. The cover proved useless, tore and spilled the coins all over the floor. THE RUN continued from Page 17 sis each year, and the list of other agencies they donate to is considerable. The Kinsmen donate to several sports leagues, which lowers the membership fees, so everyone, including the disenfranchised, can participate.

Historically, the motorcycle run was created 65 years ago, when Chris Simon approached the Kinsmen to

raise money for a friend he wanted to honor, who had just passed away. It began as the “Sausage, Pin and T-shirt” drive, which raised $3,000 that first Friday the 13th. That event turned into a tradition that exploded into a two-day celebration that includes trade booths, entertainment, cookouts and camping. It’s no wonder organizers says their biggest complaint is that the liquor and beer stores are not open long enough to accommodate the festival.

About 35 Kinsmen and a lot of local volunteers run the park, barbecues and event booths. According to this year’s takings at the gate, this year was a record-breaker for camping, said Fraser (Ooggie) Pringle, Past President.

While the number of bikers is difficult to estimate, this year’s turnout was huge, but didn’t likely break the record of 250,000 people two summers ago. This year, the Kinsmen opened a beach club with entertain-

ment and bar under a huge tent.

Over the years, they have invested in installing showers in the pavilion for campers, and renting buses to transport people from the campgrounds to downtown.

Initially, they used haywagons, “to move people up and down heart attack hill,” said Kinsmen Coordinator, Leigh-Anne Cowan, but added they created more liability issues with insurance companies, so they were replaced. The Kinsmen always have ATV’s and other smaller vehicles to navigate through crowds in an emergency. “We always think of safety first,” Cowan said.

“There’s not too much that surprises me and [Kinsmen President] Dave anymore.”

Almost every bike run has a couple getting married, and a bride decked out in leather chaps and a lace veil may appear odd, but is not an unusual sight.

This year, there were diehard bikers with large placards expressing sympathy for an elderly gentleman known as the “Thong Man,” who has never missed a Friday the 13th, asserted Cowan.

Even in the cold and inclement weather, he rides around in just a thong and a toque.

Unfortunately, “Thongman” had an accident recently and was convalescing in the hospital. This year, Naked News had a booth on the main drag, where one of the female broadcasters happily posed topless for a

The wild and creative fun isn’t just about the characters, but the motorcycles that arrive in all shapes, sizes, colors and models, meticulously painted in themes and blaring music that are the main attraction in this roadshow.

Of all the spectacle and chrome pagentry, Cowan noted, “Some people just want to get in the media,” While Friday the 13th has negative superstitious connotations, it has proven to be a Godsend for the Kinsmen.

The noise and parking may bother some residents, but by-and-large Port Dover has embraced the event as “the whole town makes a lot of money,” said Dave Johnson, president of the Kinsmen. He was quick to thank all the participants.

“We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them.”

Overall, considering its magnitude, there is little violence, and the event is

heavily patrolled by police, many of them not local, Johnson added. A few police officers on the main streets were even carrying automatic weapons.

“Ninety-nine per cent of the bikers are great. It’s just the village idiots that are the problem,” said Pringle the next day as the event was wrapping up. The downside of having 200,000 people in a small town is that, “Every Friday the 13th, one person dies,” he said referring to highway accidents.

CTV’s news on Saturday included Norfolk County Provincial Police reporting that two unnamed bikers from Niagara Falls collided on Blue Line Road late Friday afternoon, and one of them suffered minor injuries, while the other is in serious condition.

Considering the event is to honor bikers, Pringle said, “It’s sad.”

Police are still investigating the incident.

COLUMN SIX continued from Page 1 sheltered beaches, precipitous cliffs, and Inishturk and Talbot Islands in the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

Left and down I went, postponing the ultimate decision whether to climb to the top of the Sky Road or not for five or six kilometres, when the two roads meet again to complete the loop.

Early June sunshine warmed this inhospitable coast, nurturing brilliant displays of wildflowers everywhere. Masses of golden yellow Irish gorse, violet rhododendrons, and delicate scarlet red fuchsia sheathed every ancient stone wall, yellow flags blanketed soggy marshes, and flimsy white bog cotton thrived, immersing one in a landscape so intense the chore of running evaporated.

I ran past two elderly lads, oblivious to the cliffs mere metres behind them, holding rakes in one hand while hoisting dark bottles of lager with the other. They were tilling a tiny garden for no other purpose, I’m certain, than to while away their days in

A dozen curragh, the open style canvas and tar-covered fishing boats of years gone by, and one Galway hooker, 10 meters long with a single stout mast, floated nearby in the little harbour of Kingstown Peninsula. It’s here the lower Sky Road route leaves the water’s edge, and climbs steeply before twisting its way back to Clifden.

As I watched a solitary car cautiously wind toward me, its nervous driver creeping slowly downhill with brake pedal to the floor, it became decision time.

Eventually, there’s no fear a run will be uncompleted, no worry an injury won’t recover, and no concern over headwinds, hills and cold. We begin every run flush with confidence, knowing our bodies and minds will deliver what we ask of them.

The humility comes from realizing how fortunate we are simply to be able to run.

A steady pace carried me to the top without walking, and the run back into Clifden was gorgeous. Two tall church steeples, one Roman Catholic, one Church of Ireland, duel for prominence in front of the mountainous Twelve Bens. The evening’s low light casts a warm glow on the white, pink and cream coloured shops and homes of the old downtown as I enter, breathlessly.

My chronograph reads 1:47:20. Sky Road or not, a run is a run. ◆
