W

hen I was about 11 years old, a notice was put up in our school hallway about a contest to bake a loaf of white bread. Any student could enter. It was sponsored by the Robin Hood Flour Company which would provide a small prize. We kids were all agog about this great happening and I knew that several of the big kids would be participating. My mother always baked our bread and buns, and I often kneaded little bits of dough with her, twisting it into tiny buns or knots that she put on a tray to rise and bake for us to have with our soup. I thought, “Why don’t I enter the contest just for fun?” I bravely wrote my name on the notice. I had always been shy of entering contests of any kind so this was a daring adventure for me. Mother seemed pleased that I had entered a contest and said, “I’ll be glad to teach you in two lessons, then you are on your own.” So for two Saturday mornings it was lesson time. The only thing that I was not to do was to handle the stove. It was a three-burner coal oil stove. The burners were powered by oil that was poured into a little tank at the end of the stove (Dad’s job) that went over two
