W

hen I was about 11 years old, a notice was put up in our school hallway about a contest to bake a loaf of white bread.

Any student could enter. It was sponsored by the Robin Hood Flour Company which would provide a small prize.

We kids were all agog about this great happening and I knew that several of the big kids would be participating.

My mother always baked our bread and buns, and I often kneaded little bits of dough with her, twisting it into tiny buns or knots that she put on a tray to rise and bake for us to have with our soup. I thought, “Why don’t I enter the contest just for fun?”

I bravely wrote my name on the notice. I had always been shy of entering contests of any kind so this was a daring adventure for me.

Mother seemed pleased that I had entered a contest and said, “I’ll be glad to teach you in two lessons, then you are on your own.”

So for two Saturday mornings it was lesson time. The only thing that I was not to do was to handle the stove.

It was a three-burner coal oil stove. The burners were powered by oil that was poured into a little tank at the end of the stove (Dad’s job) that went over two

Welcome news for anyone who eats: The province’s reopening plan will see restaurants able to provide indoor service again, starting this Friday. As much as we surely all enjoy dining mere feet from busy roadways, we’re also ready to return to burgers and ribs and fish and chips without bees and flies on the side...and the top...and other side...Book sales are back: My far-better half and I have missed the semiannual Pelham Library book sales, so I’m happy to report that the Library is set to hold its first sale in quite awhile, in the parking lot at the Fonthill branch, this coming Sunday from 9 AM to 3 PM (ad, p.10). The filla-bag price has also dropped a bit, if I’m not mistaken, to $7...Resistance is futile: Actually, it’s the entire basis of the Kwik Fit approach. Along with restaurants, fitness centres and gyms are also allowed to reopen again on Friday, with capacity limits, which means Kwik Fit is back in action (ad, p.20), and still offering 10th anniversary deals...Behind the scenes: We’re introducing a new feature this week, Town Hall Insider, bringing you municipal news from Pelham and Wainfleet. Pelham goes first, with Chief Administrative Officer David Cribbs laying the groundwork (p.5). As longtime readers might appreciate, this sort of thing would have been unimaginable just a few years ago, under the previous Pelham administration, whose disinclination to be transparent was as transparent as could be. Under the current CAO, however, Pelham has bounced back, both ethically and financially. The right senior staff in the right places, well motivated, can work wonders. So let’s hear how they are spending their time and our money.

Covid restrictions loosening as of Friday

The Ontario government is moving the province into Step Three of its “Roadmap to Reopen” at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 16. In order to enter Step Three, Ontario needed to have vaccinated 70 to 80 percent of individuals 18 years of age or older with one dose and 25 percent with two doses for at least two weeks, ensuring a stronger level of protection against COVID-19. According to a provincial statement released July 9, as of July 8, some 77 percent of the population in Ontario ages 12 and over have received one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine and some 50 percent have received their second dose.

More than 16.6 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered provincewide. Step Three focuses on the resumption of additional indoor services with larger numbers of people and restrictions in place.

This includes, but is not limited to: Outdoor social gatherings and organized public events with up to 100 people with limited exceptions; Indoor social gatherings and organized public events with up to 25 people; Indoor religious services, rites or ceremonies, including wedding services and funeral services permitted with physical distancing; Indoor dining permitted with no limits on the number of patrons per table with physical distancing and other restrictions still in ef-

a maximum limit of 5,000 people for unseated events (whichever is less); and up to 75 percent capacity outdoors or a maximum of 15,000 people for events with fi xed seating (whichever is less). This is in alignment with the advice on personal public health measures issued by the Public Health Agency of Canada, while also accounting for Ontario specific information and requirements. According to a Niagara Health statement released July 8, residents no longer need an appointment to get their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine at the Seymour-Hannah arena.

Now, anyone 12 years of age and older can come to the clinic at any time for their first dose. According to Niagara Region Public Health, unvaccinated people account for 95 percent of Covid-19 cases between December 2020 and June 2021.

Public meeting tonight on school issues

BY VOICE STAFF As questions continue to mount regarding an email that Pelham Mayor Dave Augustyn quietly sent to a District School Board of Niagara trustee last summer, Augustyn has agreed to address the issue at a public meeting scheduled for this evening, Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Fenwick.

HEN I WAS young, my father and I would go for long drives along the rural routes of Pelham. We’d blast George Thurgood and roll down the windows because we loved the smell of the breeze, the sensation of crisp Niagara wind beating our cheeks and tangling our hair against our summer-kissed skin.

My father was not a sentimental man. He worked in factories and had a Gordon Lightfoot mustache and never shed tears over injuries.

Yet something about the Pelham landscape, the hilly backdrop to his childhood and the childhoods of our ancestors, drew him in. He’d stop by a farm or a gathering of woods and, surrendering his manly veneer, tell me a story about the town.

This place is precious. This is the earth that granted us life. Here is the place where we happened upon love or here is a site of devastation.

On one particular drive sometime in the late ‘90s we stopped at a tree with a plaque.

“This tree looks dead,” I said to my father.

“It sure is getting there, Julie.”

A construction error was discovered following the opening of a traffic calming chicane on Haist Street north of Hwy 20 last Monday that prevented large vehicles from passing through.

One resident living in the neighbourhood said he contacted the Town after seeing a small schoolbus get stuck as it tried to get through the new traffic calming measure. Later that day while driving behind a cement truck, he said that he became concerned for the public’s safety when the truck had to turn around because it couldn’t get through.

Petition-inspired changes coming to 2017 Summerfest

Representatives from the Pelham Summerfest committee Candy Ashbee and Bill Gibson presented council with a final report on the 2016 Summerfest at the Council meeting on Monday, Nov. 21.

Prompted by a story in the Voice in August about a merchant petition to move Summerfest from Pelham Street, in September Town staff met with various stakeholders to hear their complaints, promising at the time that changes in the way Summerfest was mounted would be con-

sidered.

The main concerns identified during the community engagement process were security, parking, ensuring customer can access all businesses in town, and liability for damages. How to get all Pelham Street businesses to participate and finding ways to make it beneficial for them to set up a booth were also determined to be of high priority for the committee as they plan for next year’s event.

Gibson told Council that the committee is addressing these concerns in a variety of ways. To improve parking, they intend to create bet-

ter signage for out-of-town visitors to designated parking areas and shuttle services. To make participation in Summerfest more enticing to local businesses, they plan to implement a tiered-charge for booths. Under the new system, Pelham Street business owners will be charged the least, other local businesses will pay a slightly higher fee, and vendors from outside Pelham will pay the most. In response to more specific issues for individual businesses, they will also slightly alter the footprint of the event and make adjustments to security.

Another way the committee plans

to improve the 2017 Summerfest is by sponsoring and working with the organizers of the Thursday Night Bandshell Concert series to select the artist performing on the first night of Summefest. They also intend to make more use of the smartphone app they launched in 2016.

"We are really going to push it this year," Ashbee said.

“It really helps to get people to see what events there are so they can plan out where they are going.

Next was a walk to the newsagents to pay for the daily delivery of the Daily Mirror. As I said, Dad was a printer, but when he was 37 he had been rejected for a job, as being too old, by the printers of the Beano.

For that reason, my favourite comic was not allowed in the house, but while I was paying the papers, the newsagent let me have a 'shoofty' at the Beano. I'd explained my predicament and he understood completely.

Sundays were different again. Dad would play golf on summer mornings and billiards in winter. Then he'd stop for a 'refresher' at the local and would pick up the prawns, cockles, winkles or whelks we'd be having for tea later. Meanwhile, Mum was roasting the 'joint' and potatoes. I got to make the Yorkshire pud, and mint

BY VOICE STAFF The District School Board of Niagara is requesting that the Town of Pelham cede a portion of Cherry Ridge Park for use as a soccer field to serve the students of the new Wellington Heights Public School, formerly the E. W. Farr Memorial Public School, in Fenwick.

Currently under renovation and expansion, the new school will combine students and staff from the previous school and Pelham Centre, where classes are being held while construction continues.

Two letters, containing virtually identical text but signed by different authorities, were sent last week to nearby residents of the park, as well as to parents of Pelham Centre students.

“The DSBN is currently building onto Wellington Heights Public School on Alsop Drive,” states the letter. “The size of the school's addition means the existing small soccer field will be eliminated.

A Pelham route as simple as following our southern boundary is one that would make most Toronto cyclists jealous, especially when our forests and fields are ablaze with colour.

Begin from Harold Black Park, and zig-zag south along Effingham Rd toward the Welland River.

If you’re new to cycling, it’s important to know south is the direction away from any hills.

Tillie Clapp is pleased to see her late husband’s business in good hands. Some 35 years ago, Earl Clapp channeled his experience in construction, estimating, and metal sales into a steel supply company he named Niagara Farm Metal Products, with a focus on service to builders and private homeowners. It was one of his life’s passions.

With his passing last fall, Earl’s business went dormant, but has come back to life with new owners, Tim and Nathaniel Vanderwier of Wellandport. Their father, Dave Vanderwier, was an entrepreneur like Earl, and also a close friend. A carpenter by trade, Dave’s primary business was constructing large agricultural buildings. He and Earl maintained their client-vendor relationship for over three decades, and shared information, expertise, and moral support along the way.

They took over the family business in 2014 when Dave retired.

“We tried to limp along in the early days after Earl died,” said Tillie. “We were managing the paperwork in the office and the phone calls, but we needed somebody who knew how to handle the work in the field.”

Tillie said that the Vanderwiers had helped out with the business when Earl died, and based on previous discussions with her hus-

band, she contacted the sons to confirm their interest in taking over the operation.

“Earl’s truck and trailer were part of the deal,” said Tim. “I know Tillie was quite happy to see his truck still on the road…. everybody recognizes the black Ford pickup that he drove. We kept the name on the side of the truck, and have retained the same phone number for the business.”

“We got into a conversation about, ‘Hey, you know, Earl, you’ve got to be thinking of retiring soon….what are your plans? We might be interested in the business.’ And he obviously went home and discussed it with Tillie. He told us, ‘We’ll talk again,’ which of course never happened.”

Tim said that after Earl had a knee replacement a couple years ago, he started to re-evaluate his priorities, and being in his seventies, was more conscious of his

mortality.

For now, Tillie Clapp plans to stay in her rural property on Centre Street in Fenwick.

“I’ve always done the majority of the yard work, and there's not really that much maintenance, other than in the spring when I spread some wood chips here and there,” she said. “And I've derived a lot of solace from being in the yard and being in the house. I still struggle some days…things don't feel the same when you're used to sharing them with someone else.”

Change—the bane of comfortable routine

O

ne of the more difficult things in life is responding to change. This is especially true as one gets older. Many elders reach a point where they refuse or ignore change and fight like the devil with anyone who tries to make them change.

The reasons for this rejection difficulty are hard to fathom. Even those trained in medicines that treat the brain are hardpressed to explain resistance to change. One might guess that as one ages and has been challenged many times with a battery of changes throughout their years, that they merely tire of modifications to their routines. There appears to be a certain comfort in staying within the bounds of familiarity and a consequent discomfort to any disrupting of routines.

Changes in clothing styles tend to be disregarded and thought to be a ploy of haberdasheries to profit themselves.

There is nothing wrong with what is in the closet so why go along with this maneuver to make them

old fashioned. One of the responses to this resistance to keep up with the fashions is how absolutely silly these new fashions look in the eyes of the elders. Just watch the grandparents raise their eyebrows when the grandkids show up with some newfangled clothing style and then asking, “What on earth have you done to your hair?”

One of the most egregious reactions to change is in the realm of technology. What in heaven’s name is this stream of new gadgetry all about?

There was nothing wrong with the dial telephone so why have it replaced with a device that claims to be smarter than we are.

At one time, a cell phone referred to a phone in a prison. But now it is a must-have device not only for adults but even grade school youngsters. In the hands of many, these cell phones increase sterile communications and depress meaningful face-toface interactions between people. Sad to watch a young person curled up on a bench staring into a cellphone screen and avoiding

genuine social interactions in person.

Oh, and the changes to the music scene. What passes for artistry in music today is absolutely beyond both healthy decibel levels and grammatical correctness. It seems that the louder the music, the more popular the rendition. Surely, a steady diet of this cacophony will result in a generation of hearing-impaired persons in the future— and that’s anyone within earshot and not only the ones wearing the ear buds.

Well, in spite of presenting your best defense against change, you are going to lose your case.

Change will take place whether you accept it or not. So it is best to go along with the inevitability of changes to your favorite routines, tastes and activities. If you have grandchildren they will compassionately introduce you to the magnitude of changes thrust upon you on a daily basis. They have certainly earned the title of “grand” as they are the most precious changes you will have experienced in your lifetime. ◆

Letters Dismissal of Residential schools cases “unthinkable” When I read the letter from J. Quick-Vlijm, I said to myself, “I didn’t really read this, did I? Someone actually wrote this?” but of course, there it was to read again [“Absence of councillor comment noted,” Letters, July 7].

Quick-Vlijm thinks “these things happened over 100 years ago.” No, the last residential school closed 25 years ago. There are still many Indigenous people left who were forced into these institutions. He then makes the unthinkable statement that, “There is no evidence yet that these graves weren’t a ‘saving grace’ to the families.” I challenge him to

visit the Niagara Regional Native Centre and say it to one of the people there.

He then claims there is no proof that these children didn’t die of disease. Has he not heard a survivor describe the horrors, including witnessing an actual murder of a child?

Yes, many died of disease. Children were crammed together where disease could rip through the group and the resulting illnesses were untreated, leaving the afflicted to die. Is the fact that the graves are packed with chilSee SCHOOLS page 9

Step 3 on Roadmap arrives early

W

orking at Town Hall is a fascinating experience.

Most people who do so, including myself, liken it to working in a fish bowl: we make all of our most important decisions in the public eye (typically with the media watching) and when we make mistakes, they tend to happen in real time and there is no hiding them.

Beyond that, much of our work is cyclical, so the fishbowl analogy continues to work because we are going to come around to a similar issue at the same time next year, and the year after that, and round and round we go.

So why a column about life at Town Hall?

Firstly, the overwhelming majority of the money we spend on everything from pa-

per clips to salaries to road salt comes from your property taxes. Since you really have no choice but to pay those taxes, it seems fair that you should be able to understand not just how we use your money (this can all be determined from the audited financial statements and annual budget), but what it means in the real world, on a daily basis. Secondly, there are certainly some stories worth telling: municipal operations impact daily life for people in all sorts of ways.

So I and other senior staff will explore the stories, operations and “inside scoop” of working at Town Hall—what it’s like to operate a cemetery, how festivals and See INSIDER Page 9

Placing livelihoods over lives is shameful With increasing anger and disgust over the months of this pandemic, I have been watching our local politicians use Dr. Hirji as a punching bag whenever they get complaints from those with special interests.

Most recently, Dr. Hirji was publicly reprimanded by some Regional councillors and told to “stay in his lane” because he expressed concern over re-opening the border.

Really? His lane is the health of Niagara residents—all Niagara residents—not just those “40 or more” who emailed Niagara Falls Mayor Diodati and other Regional councillors.

The population of Niagara Region in 2016 was 447,888, and this number will have

increased since then. Forty emails and/or phone calls is hardly representative of the population and in no way justifies council’s latest attack. It was political grandstanding, and the apparent lack of support from council gave rise to Dr. Hirji being trolled and his family subjected to harassment last year.

Perhaps Councillor Tim Rigby should follow his own advice to be “careful what you say sometimes, when it gets around to this type of thing.”

I appreciate the outstanding work that Dr. Hirji and Niagara Public Health have done and continue to do. Dr. Hirji’s calm and consistent leadership and his resistance to political

ith the continued lowering of all Covid indicators, the provincial government announced last Friday that the province would be moving into Step 3 of the Roadmap to Reopen tomorrow, July 16, five days ahead of the original schedule. The province will remain in Step 3 for at least 21 days and until 80 percent of the eligible population, age 12 and over, has received one dose of a vaccine, and 75 percent have been fully vaccinated.

The good news for restaurants is that under Step 3, they are allowed up to 50 percent capacity for indoor dining with up to six people per table, with exceptions for larger households. For a complete list of Step 3 rules and limits please visit the provincial website.

These Regional councillors pointed out to Dr. Hirji that his words had caused confusion and angst to a large number of residents and advised him to choose his words more carefully going forward. t Town Hall, staff have been inundated with requests from officials of other municipalities seeking information about Pelham’s gypsy moth spraying program. At last count, nine municipalities have contacted the Town for this information. Obviously, the gypsy moths are greatly enlarging the scope of their destructiveness. Staff have created a complete management program package and are now sending this out to all inquiring parties.

Although Town Council has not yet received a staff report on the results of this year’s spraying program, I have heard from many

No way to treat visitors We decided on Canada Day to take our new dog to Humberstone Park in Port Colborne.

We had visited there before Covid and enjoyed a day of swimming with a friend’s daughter. It’s a lovely spot and dogs were welcome to have a swim as well.

When we arrived at the parking area, a young woman approached and asked if we were residents of Port Colborne. We said no, we were from Pelham (this is all part of Niagara). At this point, we were told that due to municipal changes, it would cost us $35 to park as it was a holiday! And $25 for a regular day.

We both have had our two vaccinations, we wear masks when needed, and we only planned to stay for under an hour, so we declined. She told us of another park across the bridge and gave us directions. We did

stop there, but it was very busy and no one seemed to have a mask on. It didn’t have a beach area where we were, and the water access looked murky, so we took a walk and then left.

We like to visit Port Colborne, there are good restaurants and quaint shops there, but now we wonder if there will be different rules for anyone not from that specific area.

Considering we’re all part of Niagara, it is disappointing to think we’ll be treated differently now because of Covid.

The municipalities enforcing these charges may do more harm than good for the tourism industry. We will not be returning until we get further information.

Axe what you can do for your Legion Hey everybody—who misses the fun of league night? Us too. This is why we found a cause to support with a tournament!

The Fonthill legion is not only the best place to play shuffle board and have an icy cold OV. This Legion has made a name for itself by providing meals at no charge to those in need. To put this into perspective, since the Covid lockdown started in March of 2020 they and their awesome volunteers have served 14,000 meals to people in the area that aren’t able to get their own groceries or meals—winning a Niagara Region Impact Award for the extensive community impact.

Last year we were able to raise enough money to get the get the kitchen repairs that were needed to keep this program going.

This year we are holding the event to keep it funded as we get our way out of this Covid mess. It’s time for the Niagara community to

step up to the axe-throwing target and show the Fonthill Legion that we appreciate and support the work they have done for us.

When: August 21, 11 AM, with a rain date of the 22nd. There will be two tournaments this year—one for experienced throwers, and one for those new to the sport.

This will be a basic A bracket and B bracket tournament. So every player is guaranteed warm-up time, and two games with entrance. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. Everyone else gets the warm and fuzzy feeling of doing some good in the world.

Storywalking—Combining literacy and exercise

BY DON RICKERS Voice Correspondent Amy Guilmette, the acting CEO of the Pelham Public Library, called it “a great program to get families with young children out and about, and reading at the same time.”

She is referring to Storywalk Explorer, a summer program offered jointly by the Pelham and Lincoln public libraries. Running July 5 through August 29, Storywalk visits a different location each week, alternating between the two municipalities.

Jennifer Bennett, the Children and Youth Coordinator for the Pelham Public Library, said that the initiative provides an opportunity for children to visit various sites in the community, while engaging in outdoor literacy activities and recommended readings that tie in with the location. Participant are encouraged to tag their personal pictures taken during the event #StoryWalkExplorer.

Storywalk combines literacy with physical movement. The idea is to follow the path from page to page in the program booklet, and experience a story in the great outdoors. The fi rst visit in the series is to

I mistakenly said that resident Vilma Moretti was going to establish a GoFundMe page to raise funds to purchase another bench to be installed in Fenwick. It has now been decided that the Town will finance the third bench using surplus funds found in the Public Works budget.

Some of what we do is really unique and has no private sector equivalent. All of it matters and more than a little of it is critical to public health and safety.

This week the items I want to share are on the technology side: they are small stories, but excellent productivity enhancements that change the way we do business.

During the pandemic Pelham adopted a number of new software programs. From where I sit, the two most impressive ones are the electronic signature software (if anyone has bought or sold real estate recently, you will know how convenient this is) and software that allows your office phone to ring through to your computer, anywhere with an internet connection.

This combination allows many of the office staff to work remotely with the only real difference being the loss of the water cooler. As someone who has twice been in isolation because of Covid exposure, I can tes-

tify to the utility of “answering the phone” by tapping a button on my computer and not missing a beat.

I doubt that the public is aware of how cramped conditions had become at Town Hall (we had staff using converted closet/ storage rooms as offices), but clearly there was going to be some sort of expensive office space reckoning on the horizon, as future growth is inevitable. While I do think that a modest renovation to Town Hall that would create public bathrooms and storage space to support the Farmer’s Market and related events would be a good idea, construction of office space now seems unnecessary. Shared offices are likely part of our future.

While technology can enhance efficiency, it does not change the fact that the administrative and operations side of a democracy can be a messy process, not unlike making sausage. In this regard the Town of Pelham is pretty normal. What makes the sausage-making worthwhile is that the work can be exhilarating and deeply satisfying at times, particularly when team efforts have helped keep people safe, or improved quality of life in the community. I hope the stories that we tell in the coming months shed some light and offer food for thought on the mystery that is life behind the curtains at Town Hall. ◆

Pelham St. trees spared the axe—for now New sidewalks threaten mature maples

BY DON RICKERS Voice Correspondent Pelham Street residents Denise Bradden and Karen Saylor don’t really mind the road reconstruction happening outside their front door, as much as the sight of half a dozen majestic maples growing adjacent the roadway, which have been marked with white paint for possible removal.

“Just another blow to the beauty and quaintness of our town, which is turning into a barren suburban wasteland,” lamented Saylor.

Nature lovers will be relieved to learn that, according to Director of Public Works Jason Marr, the only tree that is destined for cutting at this stage is an old maple directly in front of Glynn A. Green School.

“We did an assessment last year during the design of this project, and it was determined that the health of that tree is not the greatest. Also, it is smack in the middle of a child safety zone,” said Marr.

A pathway was mapped out to identify other trees that would be impacted by the construction, and then a revision was done in order to try to steer clear of the greenery, said Marr. He told the Voice that the residents’ concerns are flowing from the job tender contract, which called for the identification of trees that would possibly need to be removed for construction of a new sidewalk on the west side of the road. The contractor marked

“At present, we're working with the contractor, our arborist, and the consultant that designed the project, to come up with strategies to mitigate any impacts of those trees,” said Marr. “Nothing is guaranteed, but our intention is to preserve and retain those trees. We're working on

different methods of constructing the sidewalk that would allow us to do so without impacting the root structure. The Town’s mandate is to preserve and protect trees wherever possible.”

The reconstruction of Pelham Street between College Street and Port Robinson Road includes a new

storm sewer system, to improve drainage and mitigate flooding concerns for Pelham Street, as well as for College and Emmett Streets.

New sidewalks and a widening of the road platform are included in the project, funded by a $4.2 million grant, which will be completed in four phases over the next

two years by Rankin Construction.

The current phase is set to last into December, according to Town spokesperson Marc MacDonald.

One lane of traffic will remain open during the course of the construction, and lengthy delays may occur. Alternate routes are recommended.

Pelham residents rise to challenge

BY DON RICKERS Voice Correspondent It appears that Pelhamites are an active bunch, ranking number 15 of all 444 municipalities in Ontario, and number 86 across Canada in a recent ParticipACTION challenge.

ParticipACTION is a national non-profit organization, originally launched as a Canadian government program in the 1970s, to promote healthy living and physical fitness.

Leah Letford, Special Events and Festivals Programmer for the Town of Pelham, said that ParticipACTION originally launched the community challenge back in 2019, but it was cancelled due to Covid in 2020.

“This year, they went forward with the challenge, coast to coast, to encourage physical activity throughout the month of June. Participants logged their minutes of physical activity online, and ParticipACTION tracked them all by postal code,” Letford said.

In a non-pandemic year, municipalities would be able to run their own fitness participation events, such

as group swim lessons or yoga classes.

“We launched a hybrid version after the success of using our GooseChase app, which had 59 Pelham households participate in a 30-day challenge, involving everything from dog walking to biking, pickleball to tennis and golf.”

Letford said that the Town reached out to schools and service groups in the area to encourage them to also run their own activity, even if it was virtual, and to log it online. Participants were also encouraged to submit photos of themselves engaging in fitness activities.

“All of that helped to increase Pelham’s ranking in the competition,” she said.

ParticipACTION takes the top five municipalities in Ontario and the top 50 across Canada for consideration as Canada's most active community.

“We were pleasantly surprised we were in contention for the title,” said Letford. “Fifteenth spot was actually a great position for us, given that this was our first time in the challenge.”

Scholarship recipients adjust to pandemic

BY JOHN CHICK Voice Correspondent A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for March in the case of two men accused of second-degree murder in the death of Pelham resident Earl Clapp.

Jason Lusted and Matthew MacInnes briefly appeared in a St. Catharines video court on Friday, July 9. Details of the court proceedings are subject to a publication ban.

The preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin March 21, with three subsequent weeks marked off afterward.

Clapp died Oct. 2 last year after being dragged by a vehicle nearly two kilometres from his Centre Street property to Hwy. 20, east of Balfour Street. Authorities

working out, hobbies and video games. “During the Easter season I decided to watch many Catholic-faith filled TV shows and movies.” Using Facetime, David helped a friend through a Covid-19 crisis. It was “a huge eye-opener …taught me not to take my life for granted…I know my prayers definitely helped my friend become healthy.”

Sophia Belcastro, of Notre Dame, will study business management at Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania on a women’s soccer scholarship. Sophia found plans for her Grade 11 and 12 years, like so many of her fellow students “were dashed by Covid-19.” Closer to home, her pandemic experience included supporting her sister with meals and Facetime during 14day quarantines when her sister returned home from an American university. It became more serious when her sister, then with Covid, had to isolate in a Niagara Falls, N.Y. hotel. Through daily Facetime calls, Sophia encouraged her sister as she gradually improved. During Ontario’s stay-at-home period, Sophia honed her cooking and baking skills and dropped off homemade bake goods and meals on the porches of elderly or infirm neighbors and family members. In 2020 with five other girls, Sophia helped the Sisters of Sacred Heart set up Sisters Summer Camp

for the children of first responders and of others in need of summer daycare.

Sophia is a former daycare student of the Sisters and a member of their youth group. In planning and carrying out the six weeks of camps for more than 30 children during the pandemic, Sophia learned about attention to personal safety, testing and ever-changing Covid regulations. For example, hula-hoops were used to set social distancing.

St. Kevin Social Justice Scholarship Committee (Soup's On!) raises funds through its annual Soup’s On! luncheon at St. Kevin parish hall on the last Friday in January. Students from local high school and Niagara College culinary programs, as well as Stephanie The Lunch Lady, prepare and serve a variety of soups.

Tickets for the three-sitting luncheon have remained $10 each over the years.

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic what would have been the 19th annual Soup’s On was not held. Funds for the three 2021 scholarships were drawn from the St. Kevin Social Justice Scholarship Committee (Soup's On!) reserve fund.

Since 2004, the committee has given a total of $55,900 for 59 student scholarships and five special allocation grants. Members of the committee are: Bernadette Barkovich, Jessica Soul, Wayne Campbell, and Joe Barkovich, chair.

“That night, our parents flew Michelle back home on a red eye. Our parents picked Michelle up from the airport and drove her straight to Juravinski so we could get more answers,” Stephanie wrote.

“Today marks the sixth week since finding out.

We know that it is Stage 3C and has spread to her lymph nodes.”

Stephanie describes Michelle as good and positive.

“Chemo and radiation are hard on the body, but she has a great group of people around her and she will keep trucking through,” Stephanie said.

Michelle’s week is a blur of cancer treatments. From Monday to Friday, she receives radiation treatments at Juravinski Hospital. That will be followed by five chemotherapy sessions and specialized radiation treatments at a hospital in London for the Beamsville resident.

Stephanie has no doubt her twin can beat cancer because she has a track record of kicking adversity’s butt.

In 2015, she placed seventh at the Pan Am Games, three weeks after undergoing knee surgery. She won the Canadian trials in December 2019 with only two months training following surgery on a horrific knee injury suffered at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

“This is by far the biggest obstacle that she has had but she has always defied them,” Stephanie said.

She has long been witness to Michelle’s dogged determination.

“She got into wrestling off of a bet, she did it and she won. She did weightlifting and became a champion of that and won champions of champions of that. In her wrestling, she just kept going further and further despite countless injuries and surgeries.

She has always come back as top five in the world, top ten in the world or tops in Canada. Doctors tell her she can’t wrestle any more and she goes back and she dominates.”

Stephanie admits the initial diagnosis was tough for Michelle to handle.

“It was devastating day.

She had plans for babies and everything and she had moved out to Calgary to do her second shot at the Olympics,” she said. “But health is her No. 1 priority.”

A word of advice

So, if you’re a “none” I would encourage you to evaluate the worldview you do have and make sure you have considered the many evidences for biblical Christianity.

Make sure you don’t just believe something by default or by convenience or by culture. Check out the “marketplace” of worldview options and develop your beliefs by conviction.

And if you’re a “done,” ask yourself what you have replaced your earlier beliefs with. Make sure you have truly understood biblical faith and not just rejected some distortion of it. Find a sincere Christ follower who genuinely cares for you and is willing to talk openly about any questions, doubts or misconceptions you may have.

It’s worth the effort because truth-seeking always is.

This may shock you but (in a sense) I’m both a “none” and a “done.” How so? I’d forgotten to bring my piano to the park, isn’t rain used to extinguish fires, my wife absolutely doesn’t want to hear any more of my stories (she has another name for them that involves the male bovine digestive system), and we were way too young to know how to play charades.

I volunteered to ask some other campers for ideas.

Although not remembering a time when charades were a hit, I did remember the ‘60s, when a favourite bumper sticker was “If the van’s rockin,’ don’t bother knockin,’” so I decided I’d only engage campers who were outside their tent or trailer.

Turns out the most common things wet campers do when another three days

of rain are forecast is to go home, or drop in for an unexpected visit to nearby relatives who have a roof and heat.

“We’ll go to Ottawa and visit my brother. Haven’t seen him in years, so it’ll be a surprise,” said one fellow as he stashed a dripping tent into his SUV. Another explained, “We’re going back to our 34-foot trailer with a heater on White Lake. My wife was like, ‘We haven’t gone tent camping in years, wouldn’t it be fun to get back to nature?’ She was wrong.”

The rain had brought about a subtle change at many of the tent sites. It was common to see a few empty beer cans or a wine bottle left on many a picnic table during my morning walks. Whether coincidence or not, this morning most tables had an empty hard liquor bottle on them. It sort of made sense. I don’t ever remember John Wayne or Sean Connery asking for a Labatts Blue or Henry of Pelham Chardonnay when they were in a predicament in one of their movies. It was bourbon for Wayne and Vesper Martini for James Bond.

With Dad’s permission, I asked a young girl what her favourite part of camping in the rain was. She replied, “Going to the bathroom, it’s warm in there.”

Why hadn’t I thought of that? What a brilliant place to conduct my interviews.

I went into the men’s comfort station and quietly stood at a urinal. When someone came in to use the one beside me, I focused my eyes on the ceiling and casually asked them over the modesty divider, “What’s the part you like best about camping in this rain?” They were a captive audience for at least a few seconds, and even although they were warm and dry, the circumstances failed to improve the quality of response I received.

Sadly, my interviews failed to generate any unique ideas to fill time when camping in the rain. However, you may have noticed that the large majority of folks I spoke to while being rained on were males. At least the old saw, “Doesn’t know enough to come in out of the rain” has been confirmed beyond doubt, and at least in provincial parks, it’s gender-specific. ◆

Flint selects next-gen Lariviere

herkston Shores was a good place to be a few Saturdays ago and it wasn’t just for some sand, sun and water.

Welland native Dylan Lariviere was on the deck at his family’s trailer at the popular Fort Erie sunspot when he heard his name called in the Ontario Hockey League draft.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound power forward with the Southern Tier Admirals was chosen in the ninth round, 166th overall by the Flint Firebirds.

“I was happy, kind of at a loss for words and very excited, that’s for sure,” the Grade 10 student at Centennial Secondary School in Welland said.

Going into the draft, the grandson of former National Hockey League defenceman Garry Lariviere and son of former junior B standout Trevor Lariviere had no idea when he would be selected.

“I was just happy that I got picked,” the right winger said. “I am getting ready to get started and hopefully soon I will be able to give myself the best chance to play there at some point.”

The first Southern Tier Admiral selected in the 2021 OHL draft is already thinking what he needs to do to get ready for his first major junior A training camp.

“I am going to be working out, skating and just getting stronger, better and faster,” he said.

He is looking forward to the next chapter in his hockey career.

“I have wanted to play in that league for a long time. Just finally to have a chance is amazing. I can’t wait to get started.”

Lariviere feels the OHL is the perfect spot for his development “It’s a major league and it helps you make the next step. Everybody talks about it. I have grown up with the game and have been around the game since the beginning and it’s something you always hear about and look forward to playing in.”

His goal for his first major junior A training camp is simple.

“I want to hopefully play there one day and help the team as much as I can,” he said. “You just have to show up, work and give everything you’ve got. I can’t wait to see what happens.”

He wasn’t sure how his family was going to celebrate the momentous day.

“We are just going to soak in the moment.”

Prior to the lost year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Lariviere was part of one of the most successful lines in the SCTA (South Central AAA loop) combining with Chris Reid and Sam Tonelli.

“Dylan is the quintessential power forward, but with incredible hands,” Admirals coach Steve Webb said in an earlier interview on BPSN. “He had one the highest hockey IQs in the loop. At 6-foot-3 and growing, he dominates net front and below the goal line. His combination of size, intelligence and hands make him a threat every shift.”

In 36 games with the Admirals in the 2019-20 season, Lariviere had 15 goals and 33 points in 36 games.

Helper needs help—Olympic wrestler's cancer battle

BY BERNIE PUCHALSKI bpsportsniagara.com Stephanie Fazzari lovingly refers to her twin sister, Michelle, as Mother Teresa.

That nickname is well-earned for the 2016 Olympian and long-time member of the Brock Wrestling Club.

“I’m a teacher and she has gone into every school that I have been at and volunteered to do lessons for kids. If someone is moving, she helps move them. She helps running extra coaching sessions and coaching camps. She just does everything and when someone asks for help, she is right there. If they don’t ask for help, she is still right there.”

The 33-year-old Beamsville resident’s selfless attitude and caring disposition has prompted an outpouring of support for a GoFundMe page launched by Stephanie to help raise funds for Michelle’s battle with cancer. The fundraising campaign had a goal of $15,000 but since its launch, it has raised more than $73,000.

“I’m not surprised by the amount of help Michelle has got from GoFundMe because she is the first person to help someone,” Stephanie said. “It is on the international level too. It’s not just in Ontario and Canada. It’s across Europe, Australia and all over the place which has been really amazing to see. And a lot of it is from the wrestling community which Michelle has dominated at the international level for at least 10 years.”

How to occupy yourself while camping in the rain

nterviewing campers about how they fill their time when it rains while standing in a steady, cold downpour is not an easy assignment for the intrepid journalist, especially during the first week of July in southern Ontario, when everyone expects glorious sunshine.

“How do you fill your time when it’s raining?” is apparently a little too personal, fraught with the danger of self-exposure. The first guy I asked was around retirement age, in baggy shorts, flip-flops, some sort of dark-coloured used-tobe waterproof jacket, and displayed a great deal of randomly scattered white and grey facial hair. He just stared at me. Didn’t blink, sigh or do anything. After a few seconds, I got the message, thanked him profusely for his time and left.

Second guy, approximately retirement age and also with a great deal of facial growth, wore his long, wet, grey hair in a bohemian combination ponytail and man-bun, but was more receptive. He replied with a hearty “not much,” then walked away.

We seemed to have parallel themes developing quickly in the rain—bad hair compounded by an absence of shaving, and a definite lack of enthusiasm for wet sleeping bags.

As I was rethinking my strategy and opening question, I walked past a middle-aged couple dragging some sopping bedding out of their tent. I glanced their way, flicked the water off the end of my nose, and asked cheerily, “So what do you like most about camping in the rain?”

She replied, rather abruptly but with one of those

forced smiles we Canadians pride ourselves on, and replied, “Haven’t figured that out yet.” His expression was apathetic as he added, “Don’t matter, beer tastes the same rain or shine,” and tipped his brew my way. As I walked away I wondered who’d go first, him with a liver issue or her with a stress attack.

I figured he’d be okay either way.

We shared Sharbot Lake Provincial Park with retirees, young couples and families all camping in some fashion.

Many had trailers and tent trailers, but most were in tents, under vast blue or or-

ange tarps if they were lucky, and their next few days would be challenging.

The weather forecast varied between 90 and 100 percent likelihood of continuous rain for the upcoming three days.

Temperatures that had been in the upper twenties all week now plunged to 10C, and strong, gusty winds shook the trees.

When my wife and I had awakened to the rain, she asked, “What are we going to do today?” Hoping to prove that I’m part of the connected generation, rather than think about what we might do or discuss potential op-

tions, I had simply searched, “Best things to do in the rain when camping.”

A website called Mybackyardlife offered the following top things to do in the rain when camping: be prepared for rain, put on rain gear, go swimming in the rain, go fishing, build a campfire, make music, tell stories, play charades, and other similarly stimulating activities.

Are you a "None" or a "Done"?

Y

ou may be a vibrant Christian or a sincere follower of another faith.

If so, this question doesn’t apply to you. However, there is a growing number of Canadians who are “nones” or “dones” even if they don’t use those words.

A “None”

When I first heard these terms I had no clue what they meant. A pastor friend explained them to me. A “None” (not to be confused with a “nun”) is someone who has no religious beliefs.

Maybe their family had roots in a Christian church a few generations back but not now. They probably grew up in a secular, non-religious home. As children they may not have known what a nativity scene meant or who Adam or Abraham or Moses or even Jesus are. When asked, “Which religion do you believe and follow?” their answer is “none.”

Even if that describes you, it’s important to remember that everyone has a worldview or belief system.

Even atheists (who say “I don’t believe God exists”) and agnostics (who say “I don’t think you can know if God exists”) believe certain things to be true. God may not be part of their belief system, but they still have beliefs which influence how they live and what they practice. They may not call their beliefs a religion but they do have a philosophy or worldview.

Personally, I don’t even like the word “religion.”

That may sound strange for a retired pastor and missionary to say. I define “religion” as a man-made system of rules designed to satisfy a deity and earn a place someday in heaven (or its equivalent, such as paradise or nirvana). Rath-

er, I see my Christian faith as a “relationship” between myself and God made possible by the God-man, Jesus Christ. While religion is based on good works and human effort, true Christian faith is based on God’s grace, which is a free gift that I can freely accept or reject.

A “Done”

A “Done” is someone who once had some religious beliefs but no longer believe or practice them. When asked, “Do you still believe and follow your earlier beliefs?” their answer is “No, I’m done with that.” Some

“dones” may still retain a vague belief in God in some form such as a force, energy or higher power.

But they are usually turned off of “organized religion.” When I hear that, I’m tempted to tell them that they should check out my church because sometimes we’re quite disorganized!

Interestingly, these same people often admire what they know about the person and life of Jesus. That gives me hope because Jesus is where our focus should be anyhow.

Each burner was inside a little tower, thus the heat went up to the stove top. When the wick was lit in each burner, the heat could be adjusted by the amount of wick that was showing. The oven was a metal box with no bottom I loved looking forward to each Saturday morning— measuring, mixing, kneading, forming the loaves and seeing the finished product arrive hot from the oven, and also hearing the praise from my parents, and even from my older sister. My confidence was improving — until the day before I had to bring my loaf in for judging. This was the day of baking my loaf, and suddenly I was nervous and feeling unprepared.

I just wanted to throw my nerves outside in the snow.

Mother said quite sternly, “Margaret, look here. You have made bread twice and each time your bread looked and tasted just fine. Now you

I meekly agreed and prepared the ingredients as I remembered.

Then I placed it very carefully in a warm place with a light blanket over it for an hour or so to rise. It rose beautifully— now it was time for mother to heat the oven for me. I watched my loaves baking, feeling proud that I had persevered in my

duty. When they came out, they looked so lovely —in my opinion.

While the hot bread sat on the cooling rack, I tore off a piece of wax paper, held a bit of butter in it, and rubbed the tops of both hot loaves so that they were nice and shiny. I could not help but be pleased.

Next morning was the hazardous trip on the school bus. I found a box for the bread, tied a cord around the box so I could hold it with one hand, put my book-bag over my shoulder and clutched my lunchbox in the other hand.

Those who had bread were allowed to go right up to the Home Ec room where each

“The winner is Margaret Ansley, Grade 5. Congratulations!” The prize was a brass pendant, etched with a sheaf of wheat, a barn and a loaf of bread. I couldn’t believe it.

After all my worries, I had won the prize. People were clapping, I was smiling, but two girls nearby were scowling.

I heard one say, “I’ll bet her mother baked it as she bakes bread all the time.”

“She did not,” I sputtered.

“I did this all by myself.”

“Prove it,” she said. My tears were coming so I left quickly. Why were they so mean? At home again I told mother that I had won but then I started to cry.

“Whatever is the matter?” she asked.

“Two girls said that you made the bread for me.”

“Oh, I see. And was that true?”

“No, of course not.”

“Then you have nothing to worry about when you know what is true. There are always people who tell untruths in order to try to bring someone down—even adults.

For some reason they cannot bear to have anyone be better than they are. Be secure in your own truth within yourself.”

“But they will tell the other kids.”

“You cannot help what they will say. Your job is to be true to yourself.” ◆

4 Classic Coleslaw

Chicken drumsticks or angus beef burgers may be the stars of summertime grilling, but classic side dishes can enhance any meal.

Coleslaw completes the deli salads trifecta alongside macaroni salad and potato salad. Coleslaw is often served at summer picnics and barbecues, and it is at home on the side of sandwiches or even on top. Coleslaw can dress up reubens or even replace sauerkraut (another cabbage-based topping) on frankfurters. It’s convenient to pick up pre-made coleslaw at the deli counter, but it’s also easy to make at home. Whip up this recipe for “Classic Coleslaw" in minutes.

Classic Coleslaw Serves 6 to 8 1 3 2 1⁄2 6 1 1⁄2

cup mayonnaise tablespoons lemon juice tablespoons sugar teaspoon salt cups shredded cabbage cup shredded carrot cup chopped green bell pepper

Combine mayonnaise, lemon juice, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Stir in cabbage, carrots and green pepper. Chill, if desired.

Tip: For an even quicker prep time, use bagged coleslaw mix instead of shredding the cabbage and carrots.
