his work, Huberman presented his findings at last Thursday’s Regional Council meeting. Huberman found that the allegations contained in the original Standard article, written by reporter and columnist Grant LaFleche, as well as others published later, were not supported by the facts. In an exhaustively detailed, 43-page

HIS IS THE STORY of a family which, during the last five generations, has had five members who became elementary school teachers covering almost 150 years. The earliest one started teaching around the time of Canada’s Confederation in 1867 and the last one retired in 2015. My name is Grant Black and this story takes place almost entirely in southern Ontario. My wife Evelyn and I (the 4th generation teacher) both attended Hamilton Normal School in 1950 and 1951 and began teaching in Caledonia and Welland. We were married in 1952. In 1953, my grandmother (the 2nd generation teacher) was clearing her Springfield house (north of Aylmer) to retire in nearby St. Thomas at a hotel. She gave us most of her antique furniture, including a bedroom dresser. Inside one of the drawers we later found some pages that were old school attendance register pages dated June 1867 and September 1867. On those pages were beautiful handwritten script lists of pupils’ names. The

Exoneration in Regional CAO hire Despite allegations made in media reports, Ombudsman finds no evidence of unlawful conduct A third-party investigation into the hiring of Niagara Region CAO Carmen D’Angelo has cleared the Region, and D’Angelo, of any wrongdoing. On the heels of a St. Catharines Standard investigation in April, which alleged improprieties in D’Angelo’s 2016 hiring process, Regional Council voted to hire an outside investigator to determine whether the allegations had merit. The Region hired ADR Chambers, an

Neighbours on Canboro Road say 14-unit building too big Town Council’s gallery was packed last Tuesday night as an application for a by-law amendment was met by strong opposition from local residents. The applicant, DeHaan Homes, owns a development it’s named “Canboro Place” at 190 Canboro Road, on the south side of Canboro west of Oakridge Boulevard, and is seeking approval to amend the zoning by-law from “Residential 1” to “Residential Multiple 1.” This change would allow a block townhouse with 14 units to be built in an area which is dominated by detached, single family bungalows. Barbara Weins, Director of Planning and Development, indicated that local and regional planning and by-law departments had no objections to the development, nor did the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority or fire services. Speaking for the residents, Bill Gibson, of Oakridge Boulevard, said “this development, with
