Some 150 skaters of all ages and skill levels took to the ice at the Rotary Club of Fonthill’s first free public skate.

Past President Paul Snack says the club organized the event, held on Wednesday, January 2 at the community centre, to “give back to the community.” The club collected food items in support of Pelham Cares.

With this being the first skate the club has sponsored, Snack said it was an opportunity to host an event in the arena at the new community centre.

For Fonthill residents Nancy and Denis DeGagne, it was a skate in celebration of Nancy’s birthday. She said she enjoyed skating when she was younger and is currently brushing up her skills by participating the adult learn to skate program offered at the community centre. Skating is a pastime the DeGagne family enjoys and just having moved to

You may glance skyward when you say it, look across at the rider next to you, or just smile inwardly, but the emotional impact is undeniable. Cycling has gifted many of these moments to me.

Zak Douglas, of Dundas, joined 14 of us in early March a few years back on an arduous 12-day, 1602 km, end-to-end bicycle ride across Cuba. Douglas hoped to cycle 700 to 800 kms of the route, travelling in the support bus when exhausted.

He’d purchased his first road bike four months earlier, after having heart surgery and arterial stents installed.

Sam also wishes it known that the correct apostrophe placement in "y'all" is after the "y," not the "a." All y'all got that?...Residents on retail: Our poll results are in (see below). They are not as close as I would have predicted, just from comments heard around town. It seems for every adamant no, there's an equally forceful yes. A reader inquired as to whether existing cannabis grow-ops automatically have the right to open retail shops. No, according to Barb Wiens, Pelham's Director of Community Planning and Development, who says that such shops may only be located "in areas where retail is a permitted use by zoning and subject to licencing requirements." In any case, it's the new council's call. Given that every new councillor, and the Mayor, strongly objected during the election to permitting retail pot sales, it will be curious to see how that vote goes.

In sum, 6 in 10 respondents either want to delay or permanently prohibit retail cannabis sales in Pelham.

Town mourns former councillor

Las Thursday, the Town of Pelham released the following statement by Mayor Marvin Junkin on the passing of former Councillor Gerry Berkhout, who died on January 1: “I, along with members of Council and town staff, am saddened to hear of the passing of Gerry Berkhout.

New transit stops

The Pelham Transit Winter/Spring 2019 Transit Schedule implemented on Monday, January 7 is in full gear and now features two new stops—Pelham Cares on Highway 20, and Port Robinson Road at Lametti Drive. Transit is free for seniors using it to attend programs and events co-ordinated by the Town of Pelham. Post-secondary students can use their UPASS as their fare, while children under five years of age ride free. Transit is free on Saturdays for everyone.

Riders needing to board the bus along Canboro Road and Balfour Street can do a “flag stop” by waving to the driver as the bus approaches.

Stop requests are permitted if riders wish to exit at a location other than a regular bus stop. Riders need to speak to the bus operator as they are boarding and let

the driver know where they would like to be dropped.

The bus operator will drop riders as close to the request as possible, however, the operator must be able to stop safely at the location request. In addition to the daily routes, Pelham Transit also offers two addition programs—Pelham Specialized Accessible Transit, and Evening Dial-A-Ride service. Pelham Specialized Accessible Transit is a doorto-door service for people with disabilities, offering transit within Pelham, to the Seaway Mall, and Niagara College. Services run Monday to Saturday. Evening Dial-A-Ride service will pick up and take riders anywhere within Pelham, to the Seaway Mall, or Niagara College between the hours of 7 to 10 PM. This service is available to anyone and is offered on a first-comefirst-served basis. For the Pelham Specialized Accessible Transit and Evening Dial-A-Ride services, rides must be booked 48 hours in advance by calling 905892-2607 ext. 347. Regular fares are $3 each way, a pack of 11 tickets is $30, and a monthly pass with unlimited rides is $80. Tickets and passes are available for purchase at Pelham Town Hall.

In an effort to bring further attention and deterrence to driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, the Niagara Regional Police Service reports the names of those people who are charged with an alleged criminal impaired driving offence in the Region. None of the following charges have been proved in court.

In addition to being charged, these individuals are also bound by a Ministry of Transportation 90-Day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension and are prohibited from operating a motor vehicle on a roadway. The public is encouraged to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service Traffic Safety Hotline or Crime Stoppers to report those who are driving in contravention of the suspension.

A year and a bit on, two Fonthill newcomers thriving

HE ONLY THING THAT CHANGES FASTER THAN Pelham itself is its restaurants. Just over a year ago, when Peter Moore opened Peter Piper’s Pub House, Zest, Moku’s, and Pub on the Hill all still stood in Fonthill. All three have since been shuttered and reopened under new names with new cuisines by new owners.

“That’s the way the industry is,” said Moore last week.

“But we’re very happy with how things have gone this past year.”

Upon opening, Moore joked that while a traditional publican lives above the pub, he was only burning the candle at both ends before returning to his home each night. Now, though, he and his wife are looking for a manager to take over some of the workload.

“This is right on schedule. I thought it would take about a year for the business to grow to where we could take on a manager,” he said.

Moore said that the two are very grateful for the support the community has given them over the past year, describing the customers, the staff, and the surrounding community as their restaurant family.

“The community has been good to us, and we’ve tried to be good back,” said Moore. “We jumped at the chance to support the community centre and other Town events.

Part of that is good business sense, sure, but it’s about being a part of this place.”

Even the abundance of other eateries nearby doesn’t bother him.

“The competition is a good thing. It’s how you can compare yourself to other places—you can go in and see what they gave, and that can give you ideas for what you can do. Not to replicate, of course, but to come up with new things.”

Some of Peter Piper’s staples that Moore is most proud of are the regular specials. He began, upon opening, with a five-dollar burger day, but has since expanded to deals six days a week.

“Being in Pelham, we have many residents on fixed-incomes,” said Moore. “And those people should be able to get out, go someplace, and socialize.”

Still prescribing

WO DAYS AFTER CHRISTM AS, THERE WAS A television sitting on the floor of the consulting room at PharmChoice Pharmacy in East Fonthill. The resident pharmacist, Glen Sisak, looked at it forlornly while opening the door for a guest. It wasn’t new.

“We’re constantly moving things around in here,” he said.

“Reorganize. What can we put up there? What could go here?”

In the year and half since Sisak and Zenia Winnicki, his pharmacy technician and partner, opened the place, they’ve gone through myriad configurations of shelving in the frontof-store, a compact space that demands every square inch be put to use.

“First we had the second shelf sitting on its side. Then it was upright. Then it was in front of the window, but that didn’t really work. People didn’t buy those things—maybe they thought that it wasn’t part of the store,” said Sisak.

Whatever configuration they’ve settled on, though, seems to be working.

“When we opened, we were told to take our worst estimate for sales, and halve it,” said Sisak. “Now we’ve doubled what we were doing before. That’s pretty good.”

The building’s owner, noting the increasing foot traffic, has been asking if they need more room to expand.

“That’s landlordese for: ‘Can I rent you more space?’” said Sisak. “I say: ‘Not yet.’”

For the first year of PharmaChoice’s existence, up until this past summer, Sisak and Winnicki were merely the operators.

This changed in the spring when an opportunity arose to buy out the owner.

“It wasn’t a difficult decision,” said Winnicki. “We really love doing this, just trying to give the best service we can give to our patients.”

Sisak and Winnicki, who both previously worked at Shoppers Drug Mart, used to joke that running their own place wasn’t stressful because it wasn’t their money.

“That’s not true anymore,” said Sisak. “But it’s not really so stressful. I like it.”

Now, the two say, going it all on their own gives them complete liberty to run the pharmacy exactly how they want to.

Their vision now is much the same as it was when they opened in 2017: a true old-fashioned drug store. When patients refer to it as such, Sisak takes it with pride, as he said back then.

COMMENTARY / OP-ED Larry Coté The prospective medical catastrophe on the horizon

T

HERE IS A CRISIS ruminating in Niagara, that, if not attended to in a timely and effective fashion, may soon reach catastrophe on the disaster scale. This particular crisis is commonly known as “the doctor shortage.” According to Regional health officials and others, this estimated deficiency is somewhere just under 100 doctors across a range of specialties.

That number doesn’t seem to be that disconcerting unless you are one of the nearly 30% of Niagara residents who can’t connect with a doctor to treat their families. These people depend on a sparse number of “clinics” and the hospital emergency wards to meet their medical needs. ER wait times are posted on the web and are another indicator of the seriousness of this issue. Wait times in the order of hours are the norm and at times can be six or more agonizing hours. Many of these medical issues could be treated at a doctor’s office — if more were available.

To make matters worse, a significant number of the local medical practitioners are near or past the retirement age. They will literally

be taking down their shingle for good in the very near future.

In an effort to address this crisis, the Region established a medical recruitment unit as far back as 2001 and rejigged the name and moderately reconstituted the group in 2011. Despite having such an attack force, the crisis in the Region does not seem to be assuaged and maybe even worsening. The rate of losing doctors appears to be greater than the number of new practitioners. Hello?

Should this not raise alarm bells at the Region?

Likely, there are a number of facets that contribute to the “net loss” figure at play here. But, more importantly, Niagara’s political leaders need to address this issue as a matter of priority now.

The status quo is grossly insufficient. A whole new strategy is warranted. Simply stated, the current strategy is just not working and needs be replaced by bolder, more aggressive measures. A new and effective marketing strategy to promote Niagara’s USP (marketing speak for unique selling proposition), as these appeal to prospective doctors as top-ofmind predilections. The new strategy must employ more

aggressive promotional tactics. Those who might poohpooh such tactics simply do not recognize the effectiveness of promotion nor the seriousness of this issue.

Frankly speaking, it’s “dog eat dog” out there when in a competitive environment.

A cursory look at the Region’s Medical Recruitment and Retention website reveals— well, it is nice. But, unfortunately and as current results indicate, “nice” just doesn’t cut it. With an almost wholly new Regional Council, maybe this new group will recognize the urgency and need to reinvigorate Niagara’s medical recruitment organization and efforts. The yardstick is a simple one. If supply doesn’t make its way toward meeting demand then the strategy isn’t working and excuses don’t matter.

Meanwhile, best you stay healthy and hope when your time of medical need arises, then the resources will be there. Can you count on the Regional Council to ensure that scenario?

Letters Poop culprits may not be the usual suspects I completely share last week’s letter writer’s frustration and disappointment concerning dog owners leaving their dog’s mess on public pathways [Letters, "Tired of poop obstacle course," Jan. 2, p. 5], and can’t imagine trying to ride a bicycle on this path near the community centre in its present state.

Walking on this new path is disgusting.

I also think it is not correct to solely blame dog owners for this problem. It is heavily soiled by feces, far too much to be left from dogs with negligent owners.

I’ll admit there might be a few dog owners that may leave this mess behind, but every single dog owner of the many I know always cleans up after their dog (myself included). A couple actually go so far as to pick up what

has been left behind by someone else.

I’ve been a dog owner for many years and live in the rural environment near the new community centre. I don’t claim to be a “scat” expert (there are biologists who are), but to me, most of this mess looks like coyote poop with a scattering of goose poop thrown in, probably why last week’s writer blamed two different dogs.

Coyotes are scavengers and their diet is significantly different than a domestic dog’s, which creates much different looking poop.

Canada goose poop appears more domestic dog-like, with some different colouring and is far more slippery (ask a golfer).

I do not now nor have I ever used cannabis, however I am a strong advocate for the medical research that is about to unfold.

I am also very supportive of residents that have real concerns about depreciating property values because of odours, etc.

I get the impression from Mr. Jeffs that he would like an outright ban of cannabis (if I am wrong I will apologize now). If I am right, then Mr. Jeffs wants to take us back to the Dark Ages.

If people can’t buy cannabis here in Pelham they will buy it in Welland or St. Catherines or some other place.

Should we ban alcohol as well?

By denying people proper access to cannabis this will only harden their resolve to obtain it elsewhere. With the cannabis producers we are finally attracting industry to Pelham, which will hopefully relieve our personal taxes. Pelham is no longer that sleepy Ontario town Mr. Jeffs craves.

As for Mr. Vincent Gircys’ concerns about global migration [Letters, “Pandora’s Box—a global concept,” Jan. 2,

p. 6], it is very evident that Mr. Gircys is a far right conservative like Donald Trump, Doug Ford, Marine Le Pen, and the presidents of Brazil, Hungary, The Philippines etc.

My grandfather on my dad’s side was from England, my grandfather on my mom’s side was from Syria. I am now a thirdgeneration Canadian. On my wife’s side, she is a 5th-generation Canadian (English background). Our relatives all came to Canada to seek a better life.

Come to think of it, the name Gircys is certainly not a Canadian name, however his relatives probably came to Canada under similar conditions. No doubt he is very proud of his heritage.

The people that want to migrate to Canada are probably living under horrific conditions. Can you imagine the everyday life of those living in Syria or Yemen at the present moment? People are fleeing Venezuela. The list of badly run countries is too long to publish here. We are fortunate to have ancestors who made great sacrifices so Mr. Gircys, I, and our families could have better lives here in Canada.

I wrote a letter to the Voice just prior to Christmas regarding these concerns about the recent Compact signed in Morocco. It is nothing more than a roadmap for the 164

May I suggest that Mr. Gircys also reads the Compact, as one of the 23 key objectives in it is to stem migration from the various countries by changing the politics of said countries, so people won’t leave their native lands. Not an easy task, but it is doable. We may never see a full change.

If we did a survey of those immigrants that have come to Canada, I am convinced that they would say “If it was safe for my family, and if wealth was distributed properly, I would never have left my home country.”

It took the United States 241 years to achieve global leadership and 24 months for Trump to destroy it.

With Bolsonaro’s recent win in Brazil, he has publicly said that he will destroy the world’s largest rain forest for logging and mining, displacing close to 30 million people (Trump has praised him for this).

England will never recover from Brexit, in my opinion.

In France, the recent riots were an attack on the elites as a result of fuel taxes and high cost of living.

In terms of Angela Merkel, she will go down in the history books as one of the greatest leaders of all time, having a political career spanning 18 years, with one of her major accomplishments being migration.

I read something the other day that unemployment as a whole is running about 5.8% in Canada and the unemployment rate for recent immigrants is 6.7%. If this is true, it is a good sign.

My last point is that for us to be a player on the world stage we need to increase our population. Maybe we can do what Premier Bourassa from Quebec did years ago to try to save the French language—offering families a financial incentive to have more children (this didn’t turn out well).

Niagara West MPP hosts New Year's Levee Residents come by with holiday greetings, wish lists of local concerns for Sam Oosterhoff Living affordably, the growing concern of cannabis operations in Pelham, and the EarlyON Child and Family Centres merger were concerns Pelham residents wanted to discuss with MPP Sam Oosterhoff at his third annual New Year’s Levee, held last Saturday at the Fonthill Royal Canadian Legion.

Oosterhoff says he was pleased with this year’s turnout as some 70 to 80 people attended.

“Everyone was excited to be here and were talking about what was happening at the Region or locally, along with issues at the

provincial and federal levels.”

The top issue on residents’ minds, along with the federal carbon tax, was affordability in all aspects, including lack of housing and the overall rising costs of living.

“People were saying that our government needs to do more. Our government

is working on that and working on making life more affordable for Ontarians,” Oosterhoff said.

Oosterhoff said that the Ford government is looking into various aspects, including hydro rates and gas, and the government is “committed to addressing this concern.”

Another issue that was mentioned a “fair bit” was the merging of the EarlyOn Centres, and the legalization of cannabis, not only on the consumption side but also the production aspect, especially with the number of production locations that have been built or proposed in Pelham.

“We also heard from people who want to ensure we were investing in health care and education,” Oosterhoff said. “It was fairly standard mix [of issues] with the EarlyOn [merger concerns] being a new one this year.”

www.thevoiceofpelham.ca about the merger of the EarlyON Child and Family Centres locations, Oosterhoff said he would be talking with his staff to see what the options are and speaking with Regional Councillor Diana Huson, as it is a regional issue.

“However, since a lot of funding for the EarlyON Centres comes from the provincial government, we do have a role to play. I want to see if there is some advocacy from the minister or minister’s office to help support this program that’s in my local community.”

“I fight for my constituents,” Oosterhoff said.

“They brought this issue to my attention, so I will look into options to see how I can assist them.”

On local cannabis concerns, Oosterhoof said engaging with the federal government will be important.

“This is an issue that everybody is confused about,” Oosterhoff said.

“What can the local council do? What does the provincial government have to do? What does the federal government have to do? How do these different regulations [set by each level of government] come into effect?”

He added having these conversations will help determine what tools are needed to help at the local level. This is what Oosterhoff is “focused on” and wanted to ensure concerns are being heard. He said he would like to assist in facilitating these discussions with all levels of government.

Going into his third year as Niagara West MPP, Oosterhoff said he is “honoured to represent the area. It’s important to me to have events like this, where anyone can come

and speak with me about whatever issue is on their mind.”

Adding no matter what a constituent’s political affiliation is, “I will work for you. So, come out to these events and give me piece of your mind.”

“I don’t mind being yelled at, nor do I mind the compliments either,” he said with a laugh. “Either way, I try to have a listening form of leadership.

That’s democracy.”

Penny and Keith Lane said they attended to “encourage him and tell him he is doing a great job as Pelham’s representative at Queen’s Park.”

Penny Lane says they always try to attend Oosterhoff’s events, however, it’s not always the case due to scheduling conflicts, but “today it worked.”

She also thanked Oosterhoff for his advocacy work for all of Niagara, not just his riding.

“I think he’s a great guy and the work he does makes us proud to be members of the West Niagara Provincial Conservative Association.”

Chair of the Pelham Community Preservation Coalition Jim Jeffs attended so he could bring forward concerns regarding Pelham’s current cannabis production facility issue.

The concerns included the number of facilities Pelham currently has and why they were allowed to remain being zoned agricultural, while other cities and towns designated them industrial.

Three vehicles targets for theft Culprit in Ridgeville described as middle-aged female walking small black dog

BY VOICE STAFF Marie Makkreel extends a message of caution to Ridgeville residents after her car was a target of theft.

On Christmas day, Makkreel was visiting her son, Michael, in the 300 block of Canboro Road when the incident happened. She took Christmas gifts into the house for the family and because she was carrying many packages, Makkreel did not initially lock her car.

Since she was going to her daughter’s house later on in the afternoon, some Christmas gifts were left in the car. She also left her purse in the car, however, she had covered it with a pillow.

“Some time later, I handed my car keys to my grandson and asked him to go outside and lock it for me,” she said.

“When he came back in, he said, ‘Grandma, you left the door open a little bit.’

Because my arms were full, I didn’t think much of it and thought yes, it could have been possible. I just accepted it and he had locked the car at that point.”

Makkreel later thought about the opened door and said the intruder didn’t completely shut the door because the sound may have alerted them, especially since there are windows along the side of the driveway where the car was parked.

After visiting her son, she went to her daughter’s place, then arrived arriving home at her Foss Road apartment at about 5:30 pm. It was only then Makkreel realized her purse was missing as the pillow that was on top seemed to be in its original positioning.

“I know I didn’t take it into my son’s place, but you are always unsure of yourself,” she said. “I called both my son and daughter, they looked around and couldn’t find it.”

By that point, Makkreel knew something had happened. Her purse had everything in it including her wallet, cellphone and extra set of keys for her car.

“So I certainly had a bad night Christmas night,” she said. “I couldn't sleep [especially] thinking somebody's going to come and steal my car.”

key for which was “a miracle,” as it was something she and her husband purchased many years ago for their travels.

It was only then that she had a bit of rest.

On Boxing Day, Makkreel’s son was visited by his neighbour, Tim McAvoy, from across the street, who returned some of the items, including the purse, which were stolen from the car.

McAvoy said his daughter, Christine, who was visiting from Vancouver, found the items when she was walking the family dog along their driveway earlier that day. She saw the items strewn in the bushes and brought them into the house.

Upon closer investigation, they recognized the name on the items and immediately returned them to Makkreel’s son.

“Our road is long, paved and clearly a driveway, especially since our house is situated a good 1,200 feet away from the Canboro Road,” said McAvoy.

On Christmas day, the McAvoys did see an unfamiliar woman with a little black dog while they were having brunch.

“At the time, we thought she had just lost her way, then we saw her immediately head into the bushes once the driveway alarm went off. Plus, our dog was barking furiously.”

Makkreel wasn’t the only target. Her grandson’s girlfriend had a $300 gift card stolen from her car during a Boxing Day visit.

When both incidents were reported to Niagara Regional Police, the re-

sponding officers stated another car on a street near a cluster of Ridgeville businesses was also targeted.

At the time, we thought she had just lost her way

by the culprit on Christmas night and upon phoning her provider, they were able to obtain numbers to give to the police to include in the report. Makkreel had cancelled her credit cards in time so they could not be compromised.

“I didn’t want to take any chances.”

Makkreel is happy she received a her purse and majority of its contents back, especially her spare set of car keys and government identification cards.

Due to the proximity of where the cars were parked from the sidewalk, Makkreel advises all residents and those visiting area businesses to lock their vehicles and secure valuables, even if it’s just for a short time and no matter the proximity to a house or public walkway.

The culprit is described as having white hair, in her mid-50s and walking an older, small black dog.

Some 150 families attended the event organized by staff and Grade 8 students. The student volunteers assisted with set up and tended to the hot chocolate and coffee station. Kinsmen seek 2018 Citizen of the Year

Do you know of an outstanding Pelham resident who helps serve the community’s greatest need?

If so, the Fonthill and District Kinsmen Club welcomes your help in request of nominations for its annual Pelham Citizen of the Year Award, 2018.

First presented in 1998, the award honours a Pelham resident who has demonstrated, by their volunteerism, the true sense of community spirit.

The recipient must either reside or work within Pelham, be 21 years old, not a member of any branch of the Kinsmen Clubs of Canada or anyone serving as a paid political official.

Citizen of the Year Committee chair Brian Iggulden said the Kinsmen Club established the award 21 years ago because there were no other organizations recognizing the community contributions residents were making at that time.

“As a service club that is all-Canadian, we decided to take the lead on this, and also, wherever we can on other projects and initiatives,” Iggulden said.

“We encourage residents to submit a written nomination on someone who exemplifies volunteerism based on our Club’s motto ‘Serving the Community’s greatest need.’”

Iggulden said the club receives some six to 12 nominations yearly.

“It’s a really difficult decision for the club to pick one individual, as all past nominees and recipients have been truly outstanding contributors to the Pelham community,” he said.

The club encourages anyone to resubmit nominations

Iggulden said that numerous people can nominate one individual and, when submitting the nomination, to provide as much information as possible about the individual’s community efforts.

For the past 13 years, Iggulden has been chairing the committee and says it provides him with a “great honour and fulfillment to recognize outstanding individuals who have the same goals and visions for our community as the Kinsmen do.”

Judy Reid was the club’s 2017 Pelham Citizen of the Year, other recipients include Ron Kore in 2016, the late Gerry Berkhout in 2005, Sandra Warden in 2011, Gail Hilyer in 2009, and Carolyn Mullin, the club’s first recipient in 1998.

Celebrating 100 Helen Durley hits the century mark, receives birthday wishes from near and far

BY VOICE STAFF Helen Durley, resident at Shorthills Villa Retirement Community, celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday, January 5. Some 150 people including family and friends were present to celebrate the milestone occasion. Son and former Pelham Town Councillor John Durley said she is the last living member of her family.

“We thank God she has lived to be 100 and hope she continues to live happily and healthy for as long as God lets her.”

John and the family extended a thank you to everyone who took the time to celebrate with her. Attendees included Pelham Mayor Marvin Junkin, Niagara West MP Dean Allison, City of Welland Ward 2 Coun-

cillor and Vice-Mayor Leo VanVliet, and former Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor.

Helen was presented certificates from Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Governor General Julie Payette, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, the Diocese of St. Catharines, and the Vatican.

Described as having a “gift of the gab,” and as a “strong, determined and faithful lady,” Helen Durley contributed 45 years of volunteer work in the city of Welland, earning her numerous awards and honours, including being named one of 30 Niagara Centre riding residents who received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award in 2012.

The government should keep its promise and restore funding,”

Concerns regarding the funding cut are shared by the Rural Ontario Institute. “One of the realities nonprofit organizations serving small rural communities face is that there are relatively few other funding organizations to turn to when it comes to pooling resources for projects,” says Norman Ragetlie, executive director of the Rural Ontario Institute. “OTF is very important for rural municipalities and nonprofits alike. Few-

As the tour progressed, Douglas felt he might be strong enough to ride a metric century—100 kms.

He achieved this goal, paced by his heart rate monitor all the way, lest he overtax himself and risk serious consequences.

After a rest day on the bus, an invigorated Douglas decided to challenge himself by cycling a real century— 100 miles or 161 kms, the next day. As I rode beside him early in the attempt, I asked what his heart rate monitor was indicating. He replied that he’d left it on the bus. No way did he want to know what his heart was going through.

Douglas bought the beers after completing 168 kms that day, and I sat by myself for a short while, overcome by a misty-eyed thank you moment.

I’d participated in a man’s re-affirmation of his physical life, and shared as he threw aside the electronic restraints controlling his activities.

On another ride, I was climbing as quickly as is possible with 15 kilograms of luggage on my touring bike, muttering to myself, “Get up there before the clouds disappear, get up there before the clouds blow away.”

The location was Northern Patagonia in Chile, near Cochrane on the Carretera Austral.

The washboarded road I was cycling was barely visible in the distance beyond the clouds.

Luck held, and for the first time in my life, I rode a bicycle above the clouds. The panorama of the mighty Rio Baker below, the largest river in Chile, its glacial blue waters raging through basalt gorges, was overwhelming.

Snowcapped mountain peaks surrounded the semi-arid desert valley floor. Pristine, pollution-free skies afforded

Moore also said that he likes how diverse the crowds can be at the pub, attributing this at least in part to the live music often on display. There are performances every Friday, and jazz on Saturdays.

“I don’t think there are any other places in Pelham that do regular live music,” he said. “We’ve even had open-mic nights.” Moore denied that he himself had gotten up on stage.

“The only song I could sing is the Muppets one.

You know, ‘Doo doo doo…

Mahna, Mahna.’ I stay behind the bar where I belong.”

Despite his aversion to performance, Moore did try out his radio voice just before Christmas, recording a 15-second advertisement to be played on three local radio stations.

“We advertise every week in the Voice, and that works. Advertising is key. And there was a fire sale on the radio spot, so I thought, ‘Sure, let’s try it.’

And we’ve had lots of people come in a say that they heard me on the radio.”

In the coming months, Moore is looking forward to seeing how the changes to the town affect its look—and his restaurant.

“It’s not like I see all the new people moving in as dollar signs,” he said. “It’s about how our town is and who’s here. I’ll be interested to see how much of the small-town feel we can keep as we get bigger.”

With an all-new Town Council elected in the fall, Moore said that he has high hopes for them.

“I’ve gotten to meet almost all of them, and they all seem very competent, very eager to get to work,” he said. “And that’s good. I want to see what’s going to happen. We plan on being here.”

The beginning of Nate Douglas' amazing ride in Cuba. visibility for tens of kilometers in every direction, and there was not another person, vehicle or dwelling to be seen. I looked down at my dusty bicycle, and said thanks.

Years ago, in the Ganaraska Forest west of Peterbourogh, my wife, daughter, son and his friend, and myself assembled at the starting line of Dirty Paul's Mountain Bike Enduro. This race on sandy singletrack offered various competitive distances, which made it suitable for the entire family. The boys would do 35 kilometres, my wife and I 50, and our 10-year-old daughter would ride 20 kms if she could.

For the final few kilometres, all riders shared the same route into the finish line.

Early in the event I clipped a large rock, and smashed my chain and gear changing device beyond repair. My race was over, so I pushed my bike along various short cuts to the final stretch into the finish line, watching over my

shoulder should any of my family ride by. The boys did with gusto, full of energy as teenagers are, as did my wife.

With less than a kilometre to go, I saw my young daughter approaching from behind. Her pedal strokes were still rhythmic, and her hands were gripped tightly to the handlebars. When she drew near, her eyes were so focused on the trail ahead, I thought she might ride by without seeing me.

As she passed, her pinky finger released from the bars and waved to me. That was it, one finger, no grin, no smile, duty done.

I marveled that she'd completed the race, and at the effort she'd summoned to do so. As a parent, I knew this determination and strength would serve her well throughout her life, and I said thanks.

Exotic locales and extraordinary efforts aren’t needed to trigger the emotion.

en of us met in the parking lot at Harold Black Park under sunny skies. The temperature was minus 2C, and the destination was Dunnville — a ridiculous 85 kms for our first ride of 2019 in bone-chilling temperatures.

The group formed up into pairs, and the conversation amongst riding friends who hadn’t spoken for weeks came easily. Fingers and toes eventually warmed up with the exercise of pedaling, noses dripped and froze, but not a single complaint was voiced. We rolled past frozen fields of corn and soy, some harvested, some not.

Ice was forming on the pebbly beaches of Lake Erie as we cycled through Lowbanks, and I studied the friends around me. Some 50, 60, even 70 years old, defining active and full lives through the joy and challenges of cycling, and said thanks.

continued from Page 3 pot to get supplies,” said Sisak. “But one time, a piece of my underground hose was cut, and I went to Beamer’s instead,” referring to the hardware store in downtown Fonthill.

“One of the guys there— who’s probably worked there forever—brought me down into the basement and cut off a foot of the hose I needed, added two clamps, and sent me off. That’s what we want to offer here.”

One of the first things the pair did when they took over ownership was to erect a large sign on the front of the building, and remain open for longer hours. The physician’s office in the shared space has adopted later hours too, and as long as the doctors are there, so too is the pharmacy open.

All of this certainly hasn’t been kind to their vacation schedule.

“We do 30-hour vacations,” said Sisak, who takes one day off a week—Sunday— with Winnicki. “It’s too bad that Christmas wasn’t on a Monday this year—then we really could have gone wild.”

“We got almost as far north as North Bay in the summer, kayaking, and as far south as the Finger Lakes,” said Sisak.

Jarring himself from visions of vacations, Sisak went back to re-organizing.

“I think I used to do all of this because I was bored,” he said. “Now it’s busy. We do it to make more room and stock more things.”

Winnicki pointed to the collection of mobility aids by the door.

“We want to get more crutches. Just today someone came in looking for one of those handles you can put in your bathtub,” she said.

Sisak nodded.

“That’ll be an update,” he said. “But the first update is: ‘We’re still here.’”
