Glynn A. Green fight video sparks anger
Column Six
That good old hockey game
Questions over who started what, and how brawl could go undetected by teachers, staff, remain unanswered
Enjoyed best when parents are kept far, far away
BY VOICE STAFF Since an altercation between students in a Glynn A. Green washroom, in which 12-year-old Ethan Sumbler and other students were recorded on cellphone video engaged in a brawl, his mother, Joanie Sumbler, has been bombarded with email from parents across Canada and the U.S., complaining about bullying. However, what’s most alarming to her is that nearly a dozen such accounts are by Pelham parents, who say that they have removed their children from Glynn A. Green, because they no longer felt
that their children were safe in the school. When Ethan came home bruised on January 16, he told his mother that he had fallen on the ice, because he was afraid he would get in trouble for fighting. He had a bruised face, and Sumbler later found bruises on his arms and stomach. It wasn’t until a week after the incident that her older son showed her video of the fight, recorded by other Glynn A. Green students in a boys’ washroom, then posted online. “I started crying right
away,” she said, but her emotions soon changed to anger. She knew the boy who had fought with her son, as they were once friends. She said she forbid Ethan from hanging around with him months ago, as she thought he was a bad influence. Since then, Ethan said his former friend has “had a beef” with him, been trying to instigate fights, and rally other students against him behind his back. Ethan also asserted that his former friend pulled a knife on him at the Glynn A. Green playground, but they

UR GOALIE WAS nicknamed the Walrus because he flopped around in the crease to smother the puck. He couldn’t stand on his skates for very long, or at all without clinging to the post, and he only did the splits when he lost his balance. Our defence lacked the motor skills to skate backwards, but they knew enough about the game to realize where they should be even if they couldn’t get there. One gripped his stick like a broom while the rest used them as tripods. Our forwards could skate fast without the puck, but slowed down a lot with it. Back-checking remained a work in progress. were too far away from the school’s security cameras for this to be detected. Early last week, cellphone video of the altercation, recorded by at least one student watching from the sidelines, was widely shared on social media, provoking
a torrent of condemnation of the students involved, of the school’s principal, and of the school board. CHCH news interviewed Nathan and his parents, as well as a spokesperson for See VIDEO Page 12
