GOOD GUARD DOG is a heck of a thing.

A blend of close companion and working animal, they’ve been a part of the human story since before we started writing things down.

Modern dogs are trained to do all kinds of things, like track down missing people, sniff out drugs and explosives, and bring down the bad guys in a police chase. But guarding people and property remains one of the most common uses for our canine companions around the world.

Every day, people of all stripes use guard dogs in a variety of ways.

I was once approached by a man from Hamilton, who pulled into my driveway in a sports car, and announced he was looking for a protection dog.

“Okay,” I said, “what do you need the dog for?”

He didn’t skip a beat.

“Oh, I’m a bag man,” he explained, as if that were the most normal thing in the world. “I pick up money from different businesses.”

Make someone's Christmas morning frisky… The undercover mayor: Some folks evidently came away from last Saturday’s Santa parade in Fenwick thinking that the Mayor and some councillors were no-shows. In fact, Mayor Junkin and at least two councillors were aboard a wagon drawn by two enormous horses, near the head of the parade. Lack of any identifying signage, however, and a general bundling against the cold, meant they slipped by unnoticed by some...What a spread: The Mayor was very much front and centre last Monday, on the other hand, as he and the new council took their oaths during their first official (and mercifully short) meeting at the community centre. The room was packed with a receptive audience, plus a couple of banquet tables of elaborate cheese and baked goods mountains, with the occasional piece of fruit mixed in. The mood was upbeat, leading a couple of attendees to compare the evening to times prior to the previous decade, and certainly prior to the last four years. “This is like it used to be,” said a longtime resident, munching on smoked Gouda, seeming to enjoy both the camaraderie and the cheese equally…

Speaking of the villages: In response to last week’s mention of a certain perceived Fonthill attitude, one Fonthill reader quipped, accompanied by a smiley face, “We are at the height of the peninsula and can’t help but look down on everyone”… Vilma, we didn’t forget: We’ll get to those papers you brought in eventually, thanks!… Card contest deadline is upon us: Today, Wednesday, is the deadline for kids to submit their entries in our Christmas Card Contest (see ad on page 15), either through their Pelham public school, or, for home schoolers, directly to our office in Fonthill—deadline is 2 PM, when we close!...Perfect winter pick-me-up: As a bracing tonic against the December winds, the Grill on Canboro has brought back its delicious homemade chili. Multiple bean varieties, the right seasoning, a touch of cheddar, and just enough fire to clear the head—and a reasonable serving size that doesn’t overwhelm (and the chili-rice-avocado bowl for when you're really hungry)…Additional food for thought: This quote came our way the other day from cartoonist Jef Mallett: “An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.” Stay warm.

Police say that overnight, November 22-23, someone stole a Dewalt 60 gallon compressor from a construction site in the 800 block of Canboro Road.

New interim CAO for NPCA

The embattled Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority has a new boss, at least for the moment. Lisa McManus has been appointed as the NPCA Interim Chief Administrative Officer/Secretary-Treasurer. According to an NPCA news release, in early 2019 a newly appointed NPCA Board will begin the process of recruiting a permanent CAO. “This organization has been under an incredible amount of scrutiny over the past few years,” said McManus, “which has had a deep effect on our culture.

With the recent tabling of the Auditor General’s report, we must continue to move the organization forward by implementing the recommendations within that document and advancing the 2018-2021 Strategic Plan. We do such important work here, and we are poised and ready to get back to doing the great work that the Conservation Authorities Act empowers us to do.”

Port sexual assault investigation update

In June 2018, members of the Niagara Regional Police Service Special Victims Unit entered into an investigation of historical sexual and physical abuse alleged to have occurred in Port Colborne over a period of 20 years. The investigation was headed by the Sexual Assault Unit with assistance from the Child Abuse Unit, Domestic Violence Unit, Internet Child Exploitation Unit, Special Investigative Services and members of District Operations in 6 District Port Colborne. Police say that on November 28, members of the project team carried out the final planned arrests in connection with this investigation. Three men were arrested and face the following charges: Clem Laroche, 78, of Port Colborne is charged with Sexual Assault; Bruno Morin,

56, of Welland is charged with Sexual Assault; Gerald Fleming, 52, of Port Colborne is charged with Fail to Comply with Recognizance. Clem Laroche and Bruno Morin were released on an Officer-in-Charge Undertaking and are scheduled to appear at the Welland courthouse on Friday, January 11, 2018. Gerald Fleming at bail court in St. Catharines on November 29, 2018. At this point, police say, further arrests are not anticipated, but the investigation will remain open in the event that additional victims or witnesses come forward. Investigators believe that there are victims and witnesses who have not yet come forward to fully participate in this investigation.

Police say that investigators have conducted interviews with more than 80 witnesses and identified eight victims in connection with this investigation. The alleged offences took place at a number of locations throughout Port Colborne, on a number of dates over the past 20 years. Ten people have been charged with the combined total of 74 alleged criminal offences. They remain scheduled to appear in court to answer to the charges.

In an effort to bring further attention and deterrence to driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, the Niagara Regional Police Service reports the names of those people who are charged with an alleged criminal impaired driving offence in the Region. None of the following charges have been proved in court.

In addition to being charged, these individuals are also bound by a Ministry of Transportation 90-Day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension and are prohibited from operating a motor vehicle on a roadway. The public is encouraged to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service Traffic Safety Hotline or Crime Stoppers to report those who are driving in contravention of the suspension.

“The Tuesday morning after the Monday election, I remember asking myself, ‘What the hell have you gotten yourself into?’”

This was the opening line, echoed with a ripple of laughter from the crowd, from Mayor Marvin Junkin’s inauguration speech on Monday, December 3, given to a capacity crowd at the community centre.

Some 200 onlookers and invited guests attended the inaugural council meeting, including service club volunteers, Town administration, fire and emergency services personnel, newly-elected District School Board of Niagara Trustees Nancy Beamer and Leanne Prince, and newly-elected Regional Councillor Diana Huson.

Junkin said he reflected on the experience as being “somewhat overwhelming,” relating it to a Jack Russell Terrier going through a cow pasture, jumping on a 2,000 lb animal, then thinking, “Now what?” “[I then] remembered I

wasn’t the only candidate who got elected that Monday, six other people did too.”

Junkin said since the election the group has met

“I can assure all residents that you have made wise choices for your council.”

“I have found them to be extremely motivated, intelligent citizens who are willing to do whatever it is going to take to move our town ahead,” Junkin said.

“As I continue to think of the task ahead, I realize that to help our newly-formed group, we would have experienced staff already work-

ing at Town Hall,” he said.

“They are more than willing to give advice to us on established Town practices and to accept advice from us as to any new direction that we as a Council deem necessary for the Town to advance.”

Junkin also acknowledged all volunteers who serve on Town committees and various service clubs, along with the individual community volunteers who “make mountains into manageable hills.”

“As I continued to think of possible resources that we as a new council could count on, it was only natural that my thoughts turned to the organized volunteer groups that do so much to enhance community life in our town,” said Junkin.

“But there’s another group that’s willing to help, and they are what I call the unorganized volunteers.”

In a reflection on the election outcome, Junkin reaffirmed his mayoral campaign commitment to looking into the Town’s finances, better communication between the Town and residents and more “public

I

HAD THE RECENT pleasure of joining some golfing partners at a locally famous pizza and wing emporium. As a relatively new member, I learned that this Christmastime confab among the group has been a tradition for more than 25 years.

Same time, same place, same menu, same faces, same jokes, proving that some things never change.

There are no special qualifications to becoming a member of this golfing contingent except for one.

That being age. The younger members of this group have been collecting a pension for some few years now and the eldest, well, they have been collecting the CPP for so many years that they have almost depleted those federal coffers.

This grouping of genial reprobates make up what is known as the Seniors’ Golf League at the Port Colborne Country Club. The PCCC dates back to 1929. Believe it or not, the birth dates of a few members predate the opening of that golf course, and they can still play a pretty good round. Most area golf courses have similar seniors’ groups.

these displaced golfers, who can no longer traverse the snow covered links. And the medical community has advised that this demeanor-changing condition is very contagious and can infect the spouses and partners of these summertime athletes. They too will display exactly the same deportment.

It is easy to see that a number of these players were titans of the game in years gone by and can still put together a good round of golf by any standard. These guys are emblematic of the misquoted adage that the spirit is willing but the body says otherwise. Listening to their stories of past accomplishments demonstrates their love affair with the game has not waned but is kept alive in their many happy memories.

OPINION Same frustration, different goal In response to Erdwin Hueniken’s letter last week [“Save the trees, stop the bundles,” Dec. 5., p. 5], he should count himself lucky he’s getting any delivery at all of the papers in the blue bag.

I’ve been corresponding with the Big Media company for three months now about why our small area isn’t getting delivery. Each time I hear from someone different who says they’ve made or updated the ticket, and informed the area rep/manager.

As of this writing we still haven’t had a delivery and we’re right in the downtown area. Will try getting in touch once more but I’m not that optimistic of the result. I do sympathise with Erdwin’s frustration though. I haven’t been told to contact anyone in India yet however. At least we’re still getting the Voice.

Re-purposing the blue bags Kudos to letter writer Sandy Fairbairn [“At wit’s end over ‘bag of dreck,” Nov. 28, p. 5]. Right-on Sandy. I am convinced that these people do not have a “Do Not” list, but rather a “Be sure to get them” list.

We are inundated with “carbon emission” warnings. If they would quit cutting down millions of trees for “junk mail” then the trees would do their job.

Another example of senior-friendly golf practices is the length of what is called a “gimme.” After two or more unsuccessful efforts to putt the ball into that very small and distant hole the player or playing partners declare a gimme. That means no further putts need be stroked or counted. Depending on the level of compassion for the player by the group, the gimme, or the ball’s remaining distance from the cup, can be anywhere from a few centimeters to a meter or more.

Fascinating that the word “handicap” is a positive term in seniors’ golf. These elders of the sporting world proudly proclaim, or quietly mutter, their handicap depending on the magnitude of that sometimes villainous integer. Being a low handicapper or a high handicapper establishes one’s rank in the world of golf. A high handicapper, otherwise known as a “duffer,” does not get much respect on the course. On the other hand, a low handicapper is greatly revered in the golfing community and is much envied.

The golf course diplomatically recognizes that these golf gents have lost some of their musculature and attempts to quietly accommodate that age-related debility. These players reluctantly acknowledge there is an inverse proportionality between club head speed and age. Since this results in diminishing drive distances there are various levels of tees to choose from. While the young guns hit from the championship tees the elder statesmen of the game can elect to drive from tee boxes closer to the flag.

Also contributing to the longevity of plying the fairways, the makers of golf equipment offer some score-saving technology.

These never-give-up seniors welcome these advancements that allow them to play the game well into their so-called golden years. Whereas they generally detest many recent technological advancements, such as those confounding cellphones, they fully embrace the improved aeromechanics of the club face architecture of the driver in their golf bag.

This group of seniors have adopted some “guidelines” that help keep the scores down and the spirits up. These rules-of-thumb have yet to be sanctioned by the PGA but no matter to these players. “Lift, clean and place” is one such example. It means that should the ball come to rest with some mud on the surface and the lie is not so attractive, the player can clean and replace the ball in a more suitable nearby position. A similar rule allows the player to sometimes “fluff” the ball, which basically means to improve the lie when it ends up off the fairway and deeply embedded in the rough.

UCH HAS BEEN SAID LATELY by politicians and the media about the United Nations Global Compact for Migration (GCM). So what is all the fuss about?

The GCM is a United Nations led effort to set international standards and responsibilities around migration, Canada included. Justin Trudeau is expected to sign this agreement next week in Morocco.

Let’s get something out of the way from the get-go. This agreement is not binding, meaning the government doesn’t need to take any action— it’s a political declaration if you will. So if it’s not enforceable, what’s the big deal?

Well first, why sign on to an agreement that does nothing? It makes no sense. Logic would then have it that if Justin Trudeau thinks it’s important to sign, then the agreement must have real consequences.

To quote the National Post’s John Ivison, “[The] very act of signing creates an expectation that the signatories will take action. It’s not nothing” and “[Whatever] your views on the declaration, it is beyond dispute that

With respect to such agreements, Ivison says, “[We] have heard in the past about UN declarations being merely ‘aspirational.’ As it turned out, they have become much more than that.”

So what’s so troubling about signing on to this agreement?

Well, for one, it could over time erode Canada’s ability to chart our own path on immigration and migration issues.

In other words, it opens the door to foreign bureaucrats of the UN to potentially interfere in Canadian laws and rules on migration.

There are many examples where non-binding agreements, pacts and accords—such as this one —are used as justifications for rulings in our own courts.

Brian Lilley, in his article on the topic, says, “...don’t think a judge here in Canada won’t look to the text of the agreement and say Canada must do more to implement it.”

In addition to issues with Canadian sovereignty, this UN Migration Pact calls for governments to “re-educate” the media on migrant issues.

Brian Lilley asks a good question, “Will criticizing illegal border crossers in the media be problematic in the future? Especially as Trudeau moves forward with his multi-million [$595,000,000] dollar media bailout?”

The question becomes, is it wrong or too much to ask that the Canadian government— not foreign entities like the UN — be in control of our immigration system? A system that is orderly, compassionate and fair.

I think Canadians through their democratically elected representatives are perfectly capable of determining how our immigration rules should be shaped.

The single most important priority of any elected official on any level of government in Canada is to represent and respect the wishes of their constituents, not the wishes of UN bureaucrats.

This Migration Pact has the potential to erode Canadian sovereignty and muzzle legitimate criticism of very real issues.

That is why signing this agreement is wrong. And a Conservative government in 2019 will reverse it. ♦

Incoming Regional Council appoints new Chair

The province has no authority Several letters to your newspaper have wrongly asked the Ontario government to end the hunt at Short Hills, when they should be asking the only ones who have the legal and moral right to stop it, the Haudenosaunee. The hunt is under nation-to-nation treaties between the Crown and the Haudenosaunee which date back to long before 2013, recognized by not just the Canadian and Ontario governments but also the United Nations and international law. Whether people accept it or not, the Haudenosaunee's rights are those of a sovereign nation.

Saying you understand “repression and hardships” that the Indigenous have gone through is only lip-service if, at the same time, you call for more repression and hardships by violating their rights. This is disingenuous and misleading.

A comprehensive respect for the Haudenosaunee means not only recognizing that only they have the right to stop the hunt, but also respecting the role of the hunt in their ceremonies and food independence. Protests targeting kosher or halal slaughter would be rightfully suspected of prejudice and the exclusion of minority communities—why doesn't the same apply to protests targeting Indigenous hunting?

To say modern archery and trucks make the hunt non-traditional is as absurd as saying attending a traditional Christmas dinner requires dressing up as people in Palestine did 2,000 years ago and traveling only on camels and donkeys.

The way forward is to have a comprehensive respect for the inherent and treaty rights of the Haudenosaunee. To address them as equals, not to continue erasing them from their own lands.

Understanding and reconciliation On several of the six days of Indigenous traditional deer hunt in Short Hills, I attended an afternoon fireside circle of friendship and Indigenous information workshops organized by supporters of the Haudenosaunee Right to Hunt.

The organizers chose to offer workshops , information and friendship circles—just outside the park entrance— rather than confrontation and insults; a peaceful community response!

As widely anticipated, former longtime MPP named council head

BY VOICE STAFF Last Thursday, Niagara Region announced via news release that Jim Bradley has been appointed to the position of Regional Chair for council’s 2018-2022 term. Bradley was officially sworn in on Thursday evening in front of a standing-room-only gallery audience, making him the eighth Regional Chair for the Niagara Region.

Bradley began his political career as a St. Catharines City Councillor from 1970-77. He served as the Member of Provincial Parliament for St. Catharines from 1977-2018. During this time, Bradley held roles as Provincial Minister of Environment, Transportation, Municipal Affairs and Housing, Tourism and Recreation, Community Safety and Correctional Services, and Seniors.

Bradley has contributed to the Niagara community as a hockey and baseball coach, manager and referee; as member of Grantham Optimist Club, as a supporter of the Rankin Run, Gillian’s Place, Start Me Up Niagara, Community Care, Bethlehem Place and other volunteer organizations.

In Ontario, the Municipal Act sets out the responsibilities of the Regional Chair. The Regional Chair is both the head of council and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Region.

“I am honoured to be appointed as Niagara’s Regional Chair for the upcoming term of Council,” the news release quoted Bradley.

“I look forward to working collaboratively with all members of our Coun-

cil and Niagara’s dedicated public service to move our Region forward and provide the important services our community relies on.”

Two other candidates threw their hats in the ring in addition to Bradley— Lincoln Councillor Rob Foster, and Welland Councillor Leanna Villella. In the first round of voting, Bradley won with 19 votes. Villella took 7, and Foster 5. Bradley was subsequently elected unanimously.

Pelham’s new Regional Councillors, Marvin Junkin and Diana Huson, were also sworn in on Thursday.

Mayor Junkin initially voted for Villella, but had kind words for Bradley.

"I think Jim, with all the contacts he has acquired over the years he spent at Queen's Park, will have no trouble getting the Region's concerns heard at that level,” Junkin told the Voice.

“It would appear that he is a good consensus-builder, which is essential when working with 32 members of council.”

Pelham’s only directly elected Regional councillor, Diana Huson, supported Bradley.

“I had a chance to speak with all three of them prior and was supportive of Mr. Bradley for a number of reasons,” Huson told the Voice.

“First, he emphasized a collaborative leadership style and consensus building that I thought was particularly important for the position at this point in time. Second, his experience is unparalleled. He has previously led a large organization of public servants in his role as a cabinet minister and has an established

Third, he had quite a bit of public support across the Region and in Pelham. I felt this was important in helping our council rebuild public trust. And fourth, while

Santa parade rolls through Fenwick

Downtown Fenwick was flurry of excitement as the Fabulous Fenwick Lions Club held its 21st Annual Pelham Santa Claus Parade last Saturday.

Coolish temperatures, sunny blue skies with enough snow to just blanket the ground made it comfortable for everyone of all ages to view the passing show.

Trevor Philbrick and Bill King were the Parade Marshals for this year’s event. Philbrick has been organizing the parade for the past eight years, while King has been helping organize for the last two. King is no stranger to organizing parades as he dedicates his time to the Canada Day and Lions Club Carnival Parades yearly.

This year, 45 floats participated, a “significant increase” from last year’s 28.

“It was a surprise we received this many entries,” Philbrick said.

King said, “We just kept adding and adding. They didn’t come in all at once, plus there were two additional entries that weren’t on our list this morning.”

Philbrick, sporting an elf outfit, said this is one of the club’s biggest events of the year.

Kids collected a variety of Christmas treats handed out by a number of volunteers representing a variety of service clubs.

Larry Lawson, a mellophone player with the Niagara Memorial Militaires Alumni Drum Corps, said the group has been playing in the parade for the past four years.

This year’s event was one of five Christmas parades they participated in.

Lawson said the group enjoys playing in the Fenwick parade, as the club is “organized” and “hospitable.”

“There’s always a large crowd in the downtown part. We enjoy playing in community parades such as these.”

Peter Menger participated in this year’s parade with his “Pepsi Truck.”

“I have always been a collector of

Pepsi items,” he said. “When I got a call that the GM Plant 1 on Ontario street were scrapping a 1956 Model of their ambulances, I was right down there.”

It took Menger about three months of consistent work to complete the project.

“It even had the original gurney attached to the unit,” he said.

The parade ran just over two kilometres, starting from Bethany Christian Reform Church on Balfour Street, trav-

elling north to Canboro Road through the downtown, and ending at Centennial Park on Church Street.

After the parade, kids were able to visit Santa and enjoy a hayride or pony ride, along with hot apple cider, chili, hot dogs, and coffee.

The Lions Club also collected donations of gently used children’s socks, coats, hats, and gloves for area residents in need.

The Town of Pelham’s Chief Administrative Officer, Darren Ottaway, officially introduced Junkin and each councillor, who swore his or her oath in turn. Town Clerk Nancy Bozzato signed their declarations.

Ward 1 Councillors Mike Ciolfi and Marianne Stewart, Ward 2 Councillors Ron Kore and John Wink, and Ward 3 Councillors Lisa Haun and Bob Hildebrandt were sworn in.

After the ceremonial induction, council did conduct a few items of business.

Junkin announced the list of Town advisory committees that were seeking new members, and the appointment of Councillor Haun as the 2018-2011 Council’s first Deputy Mayor. The position will rotate every eight months, by alphabetical order.

A wine and cheese reception followed the meeting, with Deborah and David Braun of the Glissandi Harp and Violin Duo providing ambient music.

I thought staff did a fabulous job of setting everything up, and it was great to see so many members of the community come out to the event to see their new council sworn in. More than one individual commented on the "positiveness" that seemed to have been in the atmosphere that night. It was a great beginning to what I am sure will be a very productive term of council.

IRST OF ALL, LET ME SAY THANK YOU to all of you who are here tonight. It is because of you that we are here, you the people.

While I lay in bed Tuesday morning after Monday’s election, I remember asking myself, “What the hell have you got yourself into this time?” I imagine that I was feeling the same way a Jack Russell dog would feel, when after chasing a 1000 lb. cow around a pasture, and then with a flying leap, attaches itself onto the animal’s back leg, “Now what?”

It was somewhat overwhelming, until I remembered that I wasn’t the only candidate that got elected on Monday. Six other people had also been elected to council.

Over the last several weeks, I have personally gotten to know these six individuals, and I can assure all residents that you have made wise choices for your council. I have found them to be extremely motivated, intelligent citizens, willing to do whatever it’s going to take to move our town ahead.

As I continued to think of the task ahead, I realized that to help our newly formed group, we would have experienced staff already working in Town Hall that I knew from my past time on council, who would be more than willing to give advice to us on established Town practices, and to accept advice from us as to any new direction that we as a council deemed necessary for the Town to advance in.

What I thought of as a mountain was quickly turning into a manageable hill.

As I continued to think of possible resources that we, as a new council could count on, it was only natural that my thoughts turned to the organized volunteer groups that do so much to enhance community life, in our town. Groups— and forgive me in advance for any that I might miss—such as the Kinsmen, the Fonthill and Fenwick Lions and Lioness, Fonthill Legion, Pelham Cares, Pelham Seniors, and all the volunteers that operate the Town’s sports programs. But there is another group that is also willing to help, and they are what I call the “unorganized” volunteers. These are individual residents who, for whatever reason, don’t feel comfortable in joining any one organization, but still want to contribute their time and expertise to the community. While campaigning, I had so many of these individuals tell me that they were willing to help in a variety of ways. In talking with the other councillors, I realized that they had had similar experiences while conducting their campaigns.

In getting ready to take office, I have visited other municipality’s websites, and discovered that Niagara on the Lake has, on their website, a volunteer database. On the page an individual would put such details as their interests, how many hours they could donate per week or month, and where they would be most comfortable volunteering—whether it be at the library or the community centre. As our website gets an overhaul, I believe this would be a welcomed addition.

In closing, I would like to touch again on the election just past. It is said that the residents speak on election day. On election day Monday, the residents of the Town, and also of the region, did not speak—they shouted. They said in no uncertain terms that they were not happy with the status quo going forward, and that they expected changes from their new council. I believe some of these changes include better communication from the Town to the residents, a clear picture of our financial standing, and more public inclusiveness in the Town’s decision making.

It has been said that first you campaign, and then you must learn to govern. I contend that if you try to govern without remembering your campaign conversations and your promises to the electorate, then you are deceiving the people who delivered your success.

I am very confident that with the guidance of Town staff, and the support of the community, that this council will turn the challenges we face into solutions that will benefit the residents, and will result in making Pelham an even greater place to live. Thank you.

I think the inaugural event held Monday was very organized, and most importantly was well attended by the citizens of Pelham. The venue was appropriate for the amount of people that attended. Mayor Junkin’s address was sincere and to the point. Moving forward there will definitely be a learning curve but with all of the knowledge around the horseshoe, the willingness to work together, and the positive support from staff and the citizens of Pelham, I have no doubt that we can accomplish the mandate that has been set. Top priorities: Get a clear picture of the financial situation and put a plan in place to ensure the MCC can cover its operating costs; Strategic plan and set a budget for 2019; Cannabis issues in town; Review all municipal expenditures and all operating costs; The sale of the arena on Haist Street; Short term rentals; Plan for Poth Road and Sulphur Spring Road. All of the above rate the same TOP PRIORITY—they are not in order!

It was a great evening at Monday’s inaugural ceremony. It was nice to see so many local individuals and groups involved in the ceremony, including Glissandi Harp and Violin Duo; James Carnegie (piper); the 613 Royal Canadian Army Cadets; the E. L. Crossley Choral Ensemble, and the invocation by The Ven. Dr. John Course. Town Clerk Nancy Bozzato and her team did a wonderful job organizing and setting this evening up. It was terrific to see so many people from the community come out to support this new council. Now it is time to do what they expect, to roll up our sleeves and get to work, tackling some of the important issues and making some difficult decisions.

The inaugural meeting was very humbling in that the reality is upon us and the work as a council is now beginning. I appreciate the large number of residents that took time out of their evening to provide support to their new council.

With the entire council being new, we will have some growing pains when it comes to protocol but staff is there to provide us with guidance in that regard. There are obviously a laundry list of priorities that we have to consider; in no particular order: Implement by-laws restricting the sale of cannabis in Pelham, determine where cannabis can be used throughout Pelham and controlling the growth of cannabis growers; Get a thorough understanding of our finances and communicating to our residents exactly where our finances stand; The budget process for 2019 will be commencing immediately, which needs to address repair of Poth Street and Sulphur Springs Road, along with water and other road repairs; We need to put a by-law in place controlling short term rentals; Implement traffic calming measures including the replacement of the chicane on Haist Street, just to name a few.

This is an exciting time for the new council and I am confident that this council I’ll be up for the challenges ahead.

A new era began at the ​​ inaugural meeting of Pelham Town Council at the Meridian Community Centre​​. As councillor for Ward 3, I was elated by the results and humbled by the support of so many of our residents, and many from outside my ward boundaries who attended the event. This council has a vast array of experience and qualifications. Teamwork based on a common goal will be the key to success over these next four years. I am looking forward to working with dedicated and committed fellow councillors and mayor, plus a great staff to ensure the growth and prosperity of our dynamic town. The coming four years will no doubt bring challenges, successes and surprises but we will endeavour to make Pelham and the Niagara Region better because of our commitment to accountability.

Two Pelham teams advance to finals in inaugural Silver Stick event

The Pelham Minor Hockey Association netted a successful inaugural First Annual Niagara LL/HL Regional Silver Stick Tournament, say organizers.

The tournament took place Friday, November 23 to Sunday, November 25.

Although Pelham has hosted numerous Silver Stick Tournaments in the past, this event focused on the Local League and House League teams.

Steve Hatt, Todd Major, Byron Sinclair, and Sean Stewart were the tournament organizers.

Two Pelham Panther teams did advance to the finals in their respective divisions. In their final game, the Atom team contended with Welland, while the Midget team faced-off against Schomberg.

The Atom team lost, however the Midgets won their title and will receive an invite to participate in the International Silver Stick Competition in January.

“The fact that two Pelham teams played in the finals speaks well for

Pelham Minor Hockey,” Hatt said.

“We had great feedback from the Town staff and participants on how well it was organized, and on the community centre’s facilities,” Hatt said.

“We had parents thanking us for organizing the tournament and giving their kids an opportunity to play in a tournament such as this.”

He acknowledged the staff of the community centre, Major, Sinclair Stewart, and 20 parent and E. L. Crossley volunteers who helped shape the event’s “overall success.”

“They certainly made things go smooth.”

Silver Stick Tournament Commissioner Larry Frost said Hatt, Major and the other organizers did a great job with the tournament.

“They were very strategic on the dates. Todd was very involved and organized in the planning process,” Frost said.

Frost was also pleased with the success of the inaugural tournament and said that it was “an opportunity to give the local and house league players a tournament experience like the travel teams

get. About 65 percent of the hockey players are local league players and this is a market we wanted tap into.”

Overall, 24 teams participated in the event, including seven Pelham teams in four divisions from Atoms to Midgets.

Hatt said that of all the communities that host a Silver Stick Tournament, Pelham is the only now hosting three events. Two more Silver Stick Tournaments are coming—the Pelham Regionals in December, and the Pelham Finals in January.

“Wait right here,” I said.

I returned with a large Doberman. The animal was as calm as could be while I led him over to the bag man, who didn’t look overly impressed with such a docile animal.

As he began to object, I gave a signal. Immediately the dog was up and barking like hell, teeth snapping and saliva flying.

I’ve never seen anyone run so fast. The bag man jumped back, leapt to the other side of his car and scampered inside. He caught his breath before rolling the window down a crack.

“Thanks for your time, but I don’t want anything to do with that @&%#ing dog!” he said, starting his car.

He glanced warily over his shoulder as he pulled out of the driveway and I never saw the bag man again.

The Doberman’s story, however, doesn’t stop there, though its ending is a sad one.

I was approached by the owner of a small-town hotel and bar in Ontario. His establishment sat in the centre of town, and all the locals would go there to drink and unwind. In re-

I immediately thought of the Doberman.

“I might have just the thing,” I told him. “I’ve got a dog here that’s darn good.”

I brought the dog out and showed him off some.

The man was impressed and bought the dog. But two

years later, he called me up for a receipt.

“What’s the matter?” I asked.

“Someone burned down the hotel with my dog still inside,” he told me.

He was fairly certain arsonist set the fire because of the dog. Some patron or other hadn’t been pleased by the way it kept them in line.

“I watched that dog break up a fight between five grown men, and then hold them against the wall until the police arrived,” he told me. “If anyone tried to move he would give them a nip and quickly have them back up against the wall.”

A Doberman Pinscher. came into the bar, had a few beers and then suddenly went berserk,” he continued. “The guy was smashing beer bottles breaking anything he could get his hands on, including some large mirrors. I brought out that Doberman and told him that if he didn’t stop I’d release the dog. Well, He wouldn’t stop, so I let the dog go and it nailed this guy. Summer time, shorts and a t-shirt— the dog bit the guy’s arm and there was blood all over the place. I called the dog off. The guy immediately started up again. I let the dog go once more. It hit him again and the man went down. Once again, I called the dog back, and this guy got up and ran as fast as he

could out of the bar. Never saw him after that.”

That Doberman was a beautiful, obedient dog. But the protection business is not for hobbyists, and if you’re going to be involved with it you need to understand all the implications.

You also need to properly care for and maintain your dog, so you can mitigate the risks to you and the animal.

And for the most part, the good outweighs the bad.

Many of the dogs I trained for home protection went on to save their owners’ lives, like the Doberman I trained to guard a man’s garage.

One night, while the man was bringing the dog inside, a stranger quietly snuck in behind him with a knife.

RENOVATE

Before the homeowner realized what was going on, the dog bolted past and bit the intruder on the arm. The dog held the man until the police came.

In another instance, I trained a Doberman for a woman who owned a store.

Late one evening while she was working, a man came in through the back door wearing a balaclava. He threatened to hurt her if she didn’t give him all her money. Luckily for her, the dog heard the commotion from the other room and came to investigate. The Doberman bit the man on the leg and held onto him as he tried to flee through the back. Once again, the dog held on until the police arrived.

I don’t train protection animals anymore due to the obvious liability issues. Rightly or wrongly they are falling out of style.

And while it was always upsetting to hear that one of my dogs had its life cut short, it was equally uplifting to hear that they’d saved someone’s life, or helped keep a community safe. Such animals remain a testament to the incredible things a handler and dog can accomplish.
