West Nile found in Pelham mosquitoes BY VOICE STAFF Niagara Region Public Health is informing residents that Niagara has received its first confirmation of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes. To date, in Niagara no human cases have been reported to Public Health. The region’s Manager of Environmental Health Peter Jekel called the find an “expected occurrence,” though still urged residents to take precautions. Since the mosquitoes are often caught on private property, Jekel couldn’t, for privacy reasons, disclose the precise location where the West Nile positive bugs were caught. Public Health monitors mosquitoes throughout the summer, trapping up-

wards of 100 at a time and then testing a slurry made from those caught. For this reason, it’s impossible to know exactly how many mosquitos were infected with West Nile in these positive tests. Jekel reiterated that while the mosquitoes that tested positive were found in St. Catharines and Pelham, all Niagara residents should take the necessary precautions to prevent exposure. To reduce the risk of being bitten, residents are reminded to: Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes when outdoors; when using mosquito repellent, apply a product containing DEET or Icaridin, and carefully read and follow the manufacturer’s directions; drain any areas

N 1992, I SAW A NEWS story on television that changed my life. It was a clip about the then ongoing war in Bosnia. It showed an elderly couple dead on the floor of a farmhouse kitchen, while the news anchor spoke about the issues facing civilians, which included extensive land mines. In the early 1990s as the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia began to fall apart, a series of wars broke out among constituent states that were each declaring their independence. During these conflicts, large tracts of land were covered in land mines. When the fighting was finished, millions of these mines and other unexploded munitions were scattered across the former battlefields. In Bosnia, for example, it is estimated that nearly 2.5% of the country’s territory is mined. Unlike enemy soldiers, land mines don’t simply return home when a war has ended. They remain, buried See COLUMN SIX back page

BY VOICE STAFF Part of Canboro Road in downtown Fenwick will come alive on Saturday, August 19, when the Town of Pelham hosts its “Green Street Challenge,” swapping the road’s usual asphalt for grass, creating a temporary park in the heart of the village. The Challenge, which runs from 9 AM – 5 PM, is promoted through Come Alive Outside, a non-profit organization that transforms regularly paved roads into pop-up parks, providing what it calls a unique opportunity for children and families to get outside and enjoy unstructured play, as well as promoting the benefits of a given community’s green spaces. Ten communities throughout Canada have chosen to participate in the initiative in 2017. Pelham is the first in Niagara to hold the Green Street Challenge. Barb Christopher, of Young Sod Farms in Fenwick, was the inspiration behind the event, first approaching the Town with the idea. “If this takes off, it could be Fenwick’s Green Street Festival,” said Christopher. She said that Young Sod is donating about 5,000 sq. ft. of sod to be cut fresh at 4 AM Saturday morning.
