According to the World Health Organization, there are about 1.2 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 19 in the world. One in ten of the world’s children live in conflict zones and 24 million of them lack access to school. On August 12, youth around the world had the opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges and hardships that they face every day. They were also able to contribute to development and decisions in their communities and the world. International Youth Day first started in 1999 by the United Nations to recognize the contribution that youth make to our society. The first Year of Youth, in 1985, laid the foundation and guidelines for International Youth Day, which was created 14 years later. It is celebrated worldwide with activities and events, such as concerts, parades, festi-
NO NEED TO SUGAR COAT IT Maggie Law, left, got some unwelcome news in March—she was diagnosed with diabetes. It's been a steep learning curve since then, including finding out that many kids with diabetes don't have the financial resources that Maggie's family does. "We are pretty comfortable," said the 9-year-old on Sunday, "But a lot of kids aren't." So, along with her sister, Madelyn, 12, it was time to do some fundraising among south Fonthill motorists. After barely an hour, the duo had raked in a sweet $70..."and 70 cents," said Madelyn, for Diabetes Canada. The "name your price" gambit seemed especially effective, with a number of customers dropping a $5 dollar bill without asking for change. "One girl gave us a five, but asked for ten dollars in change. We didn't really know what to do." (Maybe she had just seen "Paper Moon.") BOB LOBLAW PHOTO vals and more. Every year there is a specific theme that the participants focus on. This year's theme was Transforming Education, and was rooted in Goal 4 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Develop-
ment. Goal 4 says, “[to] ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” Many youth globally receive a substandard ed-
ucation or none at all. In addition, students with disabilities, different ethnic or religious backgrounds, girls, etc. experience additional challenges to access the tools they need and the opportunity to learn. Edu-

GREW UP IN WELLAND, and, as a child, my family visited many places in the US and in Canada. I loved that time and I believe that the travel bug was implanted in me then, lying dormant until I was older. The travel bug came back in 2014, when my daughter and I travelled to Italy. Italy was amazing—the food was delicious, the scenery outstanding and the people incredibly friendly. We saw so much—Rome, Positano, Venice, Florence— it was awesome. It was also an eye-opening trip that showed me there is so much to this world than just Canada. I was ready to explore as much of the world as I could on a budget. In November 2014, I took an extraordinary leap. I quit my job and headed to Europe to get my certificate for teaching English as a foreign language. This journey took me to Prague, Czech Republic. This was the beginning of me fulfilling my dreams. I chose Prague after researching different cities. The history, the architecture, the See COLUMN SIX back page
