being vaccinated, it is important to continue practicing public health measures to help stop the spread of COVID-19. “Everyone, including those who have had the vaccine, should wear a mask, wash hands often, stay at least two metres from others, avoid gathering with people they don’t live with, and only go out for essential purposes,” he said. “We are heartened that eligible members of our community have registered for the vaccine in large numbers, and encourage all eligible residents who have not yet booked an appointment

othing says I love you like your sweetie giving you a fitness tracker as a Valentine’s Day present. I prefer to think in those terms rather than the first thought that popped into my head, which was “You might want to drop a few pounds, Fatso, or your next Valentine’s Day will be a solo affair.” I truly believe she was reacting to my decision to start walking in the new year because I had run out of things to do around the house during the pandemic. I had already rearranged my record and CD collections numerous times, I had sorted my sports equipment and I had done four of the 37 much-needed tasks around the house. Nearly 3000 fi rst-dose jabs given at three Pelham clinics BY DON RICKERS Voice Correspondent Vaccinations are ramping up in Niagara, according to data presented on the Region’s website. Some 152,504 doses were administered as of April 23, representing almost 30 percent of the population. Even with COVID-19 surging in the region, the good news is that 100 percent of those confined to longterm care and high-risk retirement

homes have been given both shots, and over 90 percent of those age 75 and older in Niagara have received at least the initial injection. The Niagara Health hospital system has administered almost 75,000 vaccinations, while Niagara Public Health has jabbed almost 48,000 in clinics, and local pharmacies over 14,000. Some 13,000 Niagara res-

idents have been vaccinated by a provider outside the region. The provincial government has assigned Niagara a 40 percent vaccination target by May 6. Kerri Stoakley, a communications consultant with Niagara Region Public Health, reported that 2979 Niagara residents were vaccinated with either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine at the three clinics held at the Meridian Community Centre in April, with two thirds of those participants hailing from Pelham or Welland. Dr. M. Mustafa Hirji, Niagara’s acting medical officer of health, told the Voice that in addition to
