For the past decade, MacDonald has lived in St. Catharines, where he resides with his wife and two-year-old son. Raised in rural Alberta, he found himself thrust into an entirely new world when his father’s employment took the family to urban New Jersey when MacDonald was in high school. He moved to Niagara to study at Brock University. After graduating with a
Y L O V E O F flying dates back to pre-school in Exmouth, Devon in the South West of England. I arrived in Canada in 1958, joined the air cadets and in 1963 earned my pilot's license. The 2,000 students at the St. Catharine's Collegiate then became a venue for passengers to build my "flying time". A buck-fifty would get you 20 minutes over a Collegiate football game in a Cessna 172 with Leon. After instructing at the St. Catharine's flying club, I joined Air Canada as a Second Officer on the L-1011 Tristar and spent the next 34 years as a First Officer on DC-9s, Boeing 727s, DC-8 freighters, and the Boeing 747. In 1990, I was promoted captain on the DC-9, then transitioned to the Airbus 320 & 319, and the Boeing 767. On my last trip, March 27, 2006, I commanded an Airbus 340 to Frankfurt, returning the next day on an Airbus 330 for an absolutely wonderful arrival and end to my airline career. I was really not ready to retire!

Across an ocean, and back in time
Recognizing that the human species depends upon the Earth for its survival like all living beings, students from E.L. Crossley Secondary School’s EcoClub decided to show their appreciation in an extraordinary way — by giving up meat. From April 18 to April 21, the Eco-Club held its 3rd Annual VegFest to raise awareness of how a plantbased diet can “heal the planet” and improve one’s health. Funding for the week-long event was provided by The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada's Roots and Shoots Program, Learning for a Sustainable Future, and the RBC Foundation.
