First Home Show in two years draws big crowds Kinsmen fundraiser for Wellspring, Pelham Cares

BY VOICE STAFF It may have helped that the weather was mildly miserable on Saturday, including a sudden deluge of freezing rain at midday, to keep folks out of their gardens and in the community centre, where the Fonthill Kinsmen were holding their first Home Show after their 2020 event was canceled due to the pandemic.

Kinsmen President Len Doyle was all smiles as he took time to thank each vendor. Doyle said that planning for the show started before Christmas, but given uncertainties around Covid the club wasn’t sure until March 1 whether the event was on.

“When restrictions were lifted, suddenly everyone wanted in,” said Doyle.

“We sold out.”

By 3 PM Saturday, 1000 visitors had come through the doors—almost pre-pandemic numbers— and Doyle said there were “smiles everywhere.”

Some 30 percent of the vendors were first-timers, including two businesses from Ridgeway that lately opened Pelham locations.

And while the final total won’t be known until later this week, Doyle said he thought that cash donations at the door, benefiting Wellspring and Pelham Cares, were up over 2019.

Back at home: As seen on this week’s cover, the Kinsmen Home and Garden Show was back at the MCC this weekend.

Late Sunday, Kinsmen President Len Doyle told us that roughly 1800 visitors in total came through, which he said was pretty good considering that many folks are still reluctant to be out mingling in enclosed spaces. As I walked through the event on Saturday, masking was disappointingly low. Among vendors it was 50-50, and only about 30 percent of visitors were masked. (And then, two years into this, there were still those with masks down below their noses. In the immortal words of that Fire Station 1 sign, you can’t fix stupid)...Speaking of council’s vaccine vote: Do be sure to read John Chick’s council coverage this week, p.3, in which the Gang of Four regroups.

Despite the Town’s own staff strongly recommending that the Town continue to require them to be vaccinated—again, staff was requesting this for themselves, not for the public, not for vendors—epidemiologists Haun, Kore, Hildebrandt, and Stewart decided they knew better. This is particularly ill-timed considering that two years ago this Wednesday their colleague Mike Ciolfi, quite possibly made ill with the virus inside council chambers, passed away...While we’re in the virtual room: See also council’s handling of parking and planning issues. As an independent study makes clear, the location where businesses actually do need parking—Ridgeville—is still waiting for a simple solution that’s right in front of council’s eyes. And as seen in their interminable Forest Park subdivision debate (the meeting lasted 3.5 hours, as did Lawrence of Arabia, which at least had awesome visuals and an intermission), some councillors, also nearly four years into their term, do not seem to understand basic planning processes. Believe me, if emptyheaded ol’ me can get this stuff, anyone can...Brain freezes are back! Peter Piper’s Parlour, site of Fonthill’s most delicious range of ice cream, reopens this Wednesday (ad, p.9), just in time to treat your favourite Easter Bunny...But keep Thumper inside: A reader called our office to advise we alert residents in the vicinity of Deerpark Crescent to be on the lookout for hungry foxes with an appetite for Fidos. We’ve seen them, too, in greater numbers this year than last...Double thumbsup: Some entertainment recommendations for you. “Son of a Critch” and “Run the Burbs,” both half-hour sitcoms on CBC, available anytime through their Gem app, both clever and not overly taxing. The new HBO series, “Julia,” based on pioneering TV cook Julia Child, is well worth a look (available on demand through Crave). Finally, although my wife and I were mere tots during the show’s heyday, we are quite enjoying old episodes of “Password” on YouTube. Currently working our way through 1967. Funny thing about words. They’re pretty much the same now as they were 60 years ago, although the clues can sometimes be head-scratchers. Would you believe "Aqaba" for "gulf"? There was some unpleasantness happening that week in 1967. Have a Google. See you next week. ◆

Second deal with Crown sees Earl Clapp murder prosecution approaching conclusion

BY DON RICKERS Contributing News Editor Ontario Court of Justice proceedings stemming from the tragic death of Pelham resident Earl Clapp, in the fall of 2020, are approaching an end.

Jason Lusted, 50, and co-accused Mathew MacInnes, 40, were both initially charged with second-degree murder in the case. Lusted pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a St. Catharines courtroom on Thursday, which was accepted by Justice Joseph DeFilippis, the presiding judge.

Toronto attorneys Andrew Furgiele and Cara Barbisan were present in court defending Lusted. Robert Mahler represented the Crown.

Co-accused MacInnes, of West Lincoln, had his second-degree murder charge withdrawn in March after he pleaded guilty to several less-serious charges, including attempted theft over $5000, and had been expected to provide testimony for the prosecution. He was sentenced to time served, having been behind bars 515 days since his arrest, and was released from custody. Details of his plea bargain with the Crown are subject to a publication ban for the time being.

ing up his right to a trial, and to challenge evidence in the case. He also understood that there will be a sentencing range put before the judge, who will have the ultimate determination on sentencing.

A statement of facts, agreed to by both Lusted’s lawyers and the Crown, was read aloud in the courtroom.

On October 2, 2020, Earl Clapp, 74, was killed while interrupting a robbery in progress on his rural property in Fenwick. Clapp had three metal utility trailers behind a locked gate, just south of his residence, which were the target of Lusted.

Clapp was awakened by noise from a power tool that Lusted used in an attempt to cut free one of the locked trailers. Lusted was warned by his lookout that a man was coming down the road in their direction. In an attempt to flee the scene, Lusted’s black Ford Expedition made a deliberate right turn toward Clapp, colliding with him and trapping him under the vehicle. Lusted, whose license was suspended at the time of the crime, did not stop the vehicle, and continued to drive almost two kilometres

None of the following charges have been proved in court. In addition to being charged, these individuals are also bound by a Ministry of Transportation 90-Day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension and are prohibited from operating a motor vehicle on a roadway. The public is encouraged to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service Traffic Safety Hotline or Crime Stoppers to report those who are driving in contravention of the suspension.

Against recommendations, vote is 4-3 to drop staff vaccine mandate

BY JOHN CHICK Voice Correspondent Vaccine politics were split along familiar lines in Pelham during council’s April 4 virtual meeting, with the allied bloc of Councillors Lisa Haun, Bob Hildebrandt, Ron Kore and Marianne Stewart successfully suspending vaccination mandates for Town officials and staff.

A staff report had recommended keeping mandates for municipal staff while excluding committee volunteers and third-party contractors from such requirements.

“When we put this policy in place some time ago, I think it was needed. Many companies no longer have their policies in effect,” Haun said, adding that mandates could always be brought back. “I think by suspending our policy, it allows us, if things turn south … to re-enact it if need be. I have recognized that this is a different time.”

Early in the pandemic, Haun was critical of what she perceived as Pelham's inadequate response to Covid-19.

The provincial government dropped vaccine passports and masking requirements outside of healthcare facilities and public transit last month. Pelham had logged 132 cases of Covid-19 in the 28 days ending April 4. While wastewater signalling across Ontario indicated a large spike in infections, ICU capacity remained stable despite an uptick in hospitalizations. According to the Ontario Science Table, the rate of both those eventualities has been consistently and substantially higher for unvaccinated people.

Mayor Marvin Junkin and Councillors Wayne Olson and John Wink voted unsuccessfully to keep the vaccine mandates.

“As much as we don’t like it, the virus is still around,” Junkin said. “As a board [mem-

ber] on a corporate entity, I’m going to err on the side of safety.”

Wink urged the Town to revisit the policy within six months.

Haun’s fellow Ward 3 Councillor Bob Hildebrandt suggested dividing the staff report to vote on each option individually, but CAO David Cribbs pointed out that would create a conflict by voting to suspend the mandate entirely while also modifying its details.

“Suspend the policy or maintain it, plain and simple,” the CAO said.

Stewart agreed with Haun.

“If things change, we can review it,” she said. “It’s not a revocation.”

Stewart’s Ward 1 colleague Wayne Olson shot back: “That’s called locking the door after the horse has run out of the barn.”

Haun cited the ending of mask mandates as a sign it was time to move on. “This is a changing landscape and we need to adapt,” she said.

“I hope you’re right,” Olson replied.

Parking study protested

Council was finally presented with a long-awaited municipal parking study, but Haun and Stewart specifically took issue with the consultant group’s findings.

The study was originally planned before the pandemic, but subsequent lower traffic patterns both delayed and affected it — something consuting firm RV Anderson’s Nick Palomba and Adam Mildenberger tried to stress.

A surprising apology, but still so much to do

T

here I sat in my clerical collar and black suit, an Anglican priest confident in my political and social awareness and in that of my church. In quiet yet confident tones the Indigenous leader who was speaking that day told a personal story. He loved his grandpa very much, he told us, but never understood why this learned, kind man would never hug him. One day, when grandpa was very elderly and our speaker was an adult, he asked him why.

“I could never have told you this before”, said grandpa, “but when I was a child in a residential school, a hug meant only one thing. It meant that I was going to be raped.” Pause. “That’s why I could never hug you, that’s why.” I’m sure I wasn’t alone in feeling tears come to my eyes.

But tears have never been enough, and the obscenity of the residential school system has taken far too long to be exposed. That’s why Indigenous delegates were in Rome two weeks ago to meet with the Pope, to ask for an apology for what Roman Catholic priests and teachers did between the

1840s and the 1990s, when some 150,000 First Nations children were taken from their families in a mass effort to convert them, “make them white” and, “take the Indian out of the Indian.”

The concept was hideous,

"I want to say to you with all my heart, I am very sorry"

and the application worse.

There was physical and sexual abuse, lack of medical care, and sheer cruelty.

On the final day of the visit, Francis delivered words that, frankly, the group didn’t think would be forthcoming. “I also feel shame ... sorrow and shame for the role that a number of Catholics, particularly those with educational responsibilities, have had in all these things that wound-

It’s taken such a long time, but means so very much.

Last year alone, the remains of hundreds of Indigenous children, some as young as three years old, were discovered. They were anonymous, and their bodies were given no respect or dignity. Horror stories abound, all part of what is this country’s birth defect: its cultural genocide and physical destruction of people native to the land.

The Roman Catholic Church isn’t the only culprit of course, but other religious institutions, and secular bodies, acknowledged their crimes in the 1980s.

Letters Put it in your calendar—Pelham High Reunion 2022 Pelham/Continuation/District/Secondary School in Fenwick was an important part in educating students of Pelham Township and surrounding areas for 52 years. In 1984, ten years after the school was closed, we held our first reunion. The school was now “private” but we were given permission to hold most of our events there.

The big challenge was letting people know what we were planning. This was well before social media, so we had to employ every device we could think of. Newspapers were our lifeline. The Pelham Herald (a weekly which

the Voice later replaced)) was our mainstay but we also wrote and mailed letters to the editor to the Tribune, Standard, Review and even the Toronto Star.

The publisher at the Herald gave us a list of names of all the local papers in Ontario and we mailed a letter to each one. When we were able to find addresses of teachers and support staff we sent them invitations.

We asked for people to write back and let us know their intentions and send a cheque for registration, wine and cheese, and the See REUNION Page 6

OPINION Last decade has seen a long list of local improvements The March 30th “Balanced Life” column

by John Swart ["Pelham gets Active Transportation right," p.14] provided timely insights and commentary about the sidewalks, paths, trails and roadways that Pelham’s residents, of all ages and abilities, use every day. The importance of walking, including with mobility devices, and cycling was reinforced by the pandemic, as we sought to maintain our physical and mental health.

Pelham’s active transportation network benefits all of us personally, and its use contributes economically and environmentally to our community.

Active transportation improvements are the result of the leadership, collaboration and efforts of Pelham’s elected municipal and Regional officials, Town staff, residents and council’s advisory committee, the Pelham Active Transportation Committee.

Through these collaborative efforts, as John indicated, real progress has been made in the last decade:  Signatory to the International Charter on Walking  Municipal snow clearing of all sidewalks and paved trails  New trails added including the Gerry Berkhout Trail in Fenwick  Existing trails maintained and enhanced  Benches and trees added in critical areas  Accessible, paved multi-use pathways in East Fonthill  Paving a section of the Steve Bauer Trail from Port Robinson Road to join with Welland’s paved trail (by securing a special purpose provincial grant)  New sidewalks added in existing and new residential areas

 Bike lanes added to some roadways  Pedestrian crossings at school zones reinforced  Sidewalks added in school zones, including along Highway 20 to E. L. continued from previous page these schools, and while there had been vague statements of regret and sympathy, it took intense public pressure and even threats regarding the funding of Catholic schools and the removal of tax-free status for churches, for Canadian bishops to apologize last year. There were also examples of denial, arguments that it wasn’t as bad as survivors claimed, or—quite incredibly— that while abuse was regrettable, at least these children were brought “the light of Christ.”

The Vatican hasn’t been as crass but nevertheless still refuses to provide documents that would reveal details and culprits. Under the 2005 Indian Residential Schools Settlement, the Canadian church also promised at least $25 million for Indigenous communities, but only a fraction of that amount was ever given. The church argued that it couldn’t raise the money, but did find large amounts to restore old churches, including the purchase of elaborate furniture and stained glass. The insulting juxtaposition wasn’t lost on survivors.

The delegation also requested that Rome return artifacts from its various museums and collections, and open up its archives so that the residential school system can be fully researched. In other words, this is in many ways the beginning of a process, and one that could take many years.

Niagara economy continues to climb back

n the month of March, Niagara saw jobs climb by 7,600 as we continue to climb to pre-Covid numbers.

As residents return in ever increasing numbers back to area restaurants, managers are calling back staff and of course numbers always rise with the coming of spring. Nationally, 73,000 new hires were added to the workforce.

Speaking of new jobs, at the Planning Economic Development Committee meeting held last week at the Region, the committee reviewed plans for a new winery located in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It is an offshoot of an existing winery, and along with the new location comes a $40 million dollar price tag.

The company estimates that they will need upwards of one hundred new employees at the facility, which will have a

restaurant and wine tasting room. The price for their top wine approaches $200 a bottle. I have to admit that with these prices I am happy that my wife is not a wine drinker—phew! Good for them and their confidence in the wine industry that they are willing to make such a financial commitment to the industry. his past weekend brought the Pelham Home Show to the MCC. It was very well attended and enjoyed by all. Gate receipts for this event were shared

by Wellspring Niagara, and Pelham Cares. This home show is put together by the Fonthill Kinsmen. For two years the show was cancelled due to (you guessed it) Covid, of course. Attendees were excited to be out and about to enjoy this event once again and to mingle with others in attendance.

(Now, I send everyone on the list of about 325 people an email and it takes two minutes!) It all came together and 4000 former students, staff and support staff came to that first reunion.

We set up decade rooms off the old gym and lower floor, had wine and cheese in the new gym and a dance at the arena. Dr. E. L. Crossley led us in opening exercises and reminded us that “a word to the wise should be sufficient.” Two original teachers, Miss Bonis and Miss Metler were there also.

We had a great time!

When all the bills were paid, we had $10,000 left. We had no problem in deciding what to do with this money and we set up our Pelham High Alumni Scholarship as a charity. Interest rates in the ‘80s were 18 percent-plus, so our fund appreciated quickly. People contributed in “memory of” or “just because.” After every subsequent reunion, we had money left that went into our scholarship fund. Since 1985, we have given over $60,000 to graduating students at E.L. Crossley Secondary School. We are so very proud to know that we have helped so many students further their education.

We had planned to have our 11th Reunion in 2020 but, of course, had to cancel because of Covid-19. So, hoping that Covid will not be an issue this time, we are having our reunion at the Legion Branch 613, Fonthill, on June 12th from 1 PM to 5 PM. Cost is $15 at the door (please have correct change). There is a cash bar (cash, debit or credit accepted).

Thoughts on storm water pond News from Nazareth: Wed, April 13 / AD 33 The storm water pond [SWP], often called “Lake Augustyn” by many residents, near the intersection of Highway 20 and Rice Road, has been a thorn in the side of the Town’s development since it was built in 2015. It was designed and built to service the north side of the East Fonthill development.

The SWP is a key feature in that development to control storm drainage. The unique feature about this pond is that it drains directly into Twelve Mile Creek (a fresh-water creek with trout). The pond design and construction oversight was performed

by Upper Canada Consultants, St. Catharines, and had approval from many levels of government and agencies (municipal, Regional, NPCA, Ministry of Environment, and others).

Since the pond was constructed, there have been studies to confirm water quality (temperature, sediment. and chemistry) to ensure it meets standards to support fish habitat downstream into Twelve Mile Creek. There have also been studies as far back as 2016 to evaluate erosion north of Highway 20, and they indicated that there is a problem.

Again in the fall of 2020, based on public and community involvement (Fonthill Lions Club and Pelham Cares), the erosion issue became a major concern and Town staff were asked to prepare a report. The Town had engineering consultants review the water quality and the how the pond was performing. All reports came back confirming that the pond was performing within design specifications.

In early 2021, the erosion issue came before Town Council. The Mayor had been in contact with Trout Unlimited and they were interested in working with the Town to resolve the erosion issue. The initial comment for the cost to solve and make restoration was $60,000 to $70,000. In June 2021, the Town prepared a request for proposal (RFP) for the design and build, and only received one bid, which was well out of budget. As a result, no contract was issued.

Jesus, 33, was eldest son of Joseph and Mary. It all started on Friday when the Jewish high priests and elders of the Sanhedrin accused Jesus of blasphemy.

When the high priest asked him directly: “Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” Jesus (who had been silent up to that point in His own defense) answered him plainly. “I am.” The council immediately voted to condemn Him to death, since blasphemy was considered a capital crime. There is no question that Jesus had already claimed in various indirect ways to be uniquely the Son of God, but this assertion, made in front of all the elders and scribes, was unequivocal and completely clear, giving them the excuse they needed. But first they needed Rome to approve of their death sentence, so Jesus was taken to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor in Judea. Pilate was also reluctant to condemn Jesus to death because his wife Claudia Procula interceded on behalf of Jesus. Although Pilate found him innocent, unable to find or even contrive a reason to condemn Jesus, he feared the crowds, letting them decide Jesus' fate. Stirred by the Jewish chief priests, the cancel culture crowd shouted, “Crucify him!”

He was then led to Golgotha to be crucified, where the pain was so intense a new word, “excruciating,” was created. The root word, cruciate, is a direct reference to crucem, meaning “the cross.” The inscription above his head tauntingly read, “The King of the Jews.” It was a custom by the Romans to hang what was called a “titulus” around a criminal's neck or have it carried before him, on the way to his execution. A titulus was a wooden

tablet covered with gypsum and then written on it in black letters, the charge by which the prisoner was condemned.

Jesus hung on the cross for about six hours before he died. During that time, soldiers cast lots for Jesus' clothing, while people passed by shouting insults and scoffing.

"It was a custom of the Romans to hang what was called a 'titulus' around a criminal's neck" with His arms extended in mercy, offering mercy to the very end. But only the repentant thief accepted the offer.

Thus he heard, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Stake-like nails were driven through his wrists and ankles, fastening him to the cross where he was crucified between two convicted criminals—Roman officials likely did this so as to heap additional scorn upon Him. It was typical for Roman soldiers to show mercy by breaking the criminal's legs, thus causing death to come more quickly. But this night only the thieves had their legs broken, for when the soldiers came to Jesus, they found him already dead. Instead, they just pierced his side to confirm His death.

Duncan sentencing hearing suspended, resumes April 19

"These victims went to their doctor, thinking it was a safe space"

Disgraced former doctor convicted on all sexual assault charges in January

BY DON RICKERS Contributing News Editor Former Pelham family physician Charles Duncan was back at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in downtown St. Catharines last Friday before Justice Deborah Calderwood. Oral sentencing submissions were presented by defence counsel Seth Weinstein, and Crown prosecutor Todd Morris.

Duncan was found guilty on January 21 by Justice Calderwood on all six counts of sexual assault under Section 271 of the Criminal Code, in relation to five different complainants.

The charges stemmed from alleged acts committed by Duncan in his medical practice and elsewhere for nearly 20 years.

Duncan, who practiced family medicine in Pelham for decades, resigned from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario in October 2019, and also gave up his license to practice medicine, after the College commenced an investigation into allegations against him of professional misconduct and incompetence.

After one of the sexual assault victims told her story to the Voice that autumn, several other women came forward with similar allegations. Duncan was formally charged with seven counts of sexual assault and one of sexual

exploitation, and was arrested by Niagara Regional Police in November 2019. The women involved were aged 16 to 64 at the time of the incidents.

Her Honour reiterated for the courtroom that a publication ban prohibited the release of any information that could identify the named complainants in the case.

Defense lawyer Weinstein referenced 52 letters of support for Duncan in the court file from former patients, staff, and medical colleagues, which he referred to as a “tidal wave of support,” admitting that they “really paint a Jekyll and Hyde situation for the court” with regard to the former doctor’s character.

One specialist who had a longstanding work relationship with Duncan attested in his letter to Duncan’s commitment to his patients and the medical profession.

Crown prosecutor Morris referenced comments the medical specialist wrote in his letter of support for Duncan, citing “I can imagine how this development will change his life and relations with devastating effects. Considering his services to community, I sincerely wish him peaceful retirement.”

The issue of “collateral damage” in the aftermath of Duncan’s actions was discussed by both Weinstein and Morris, with Weinstein noting that Duncan’s marriage had dissolved as a consequence. Weinstein told the court that Duncan had a practice of 3000 patients extending over 50 years, involving multi-generational families who spoke in glowing terms of Duncan’s skills and dedication as a family doctor who even made house-calls on occasion.

Duncan had no prior criminal record, and had an unblemished record with the College of Phy-

sicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

He was described by the defense as a man devoted to his family, and despite the charges has their support.

Weinstein argued that a Conditional Sentence Order (CSO) was appropriate in Duncan’s case, and recommended 18 months of non-custodial house arrest. (A CSO refers to incarceration which is permitted to be served in the community under strict conditions, typically consisting of house arrest, for up to two years less a day.)

His lawyer suggested that Duncan’s crimes were on “the lower end of the spectrum” with regard to sexual assault, and insisted that Duncan’s age (he will be 79 in

July) and poor health (he has asserted diagnoses of leukemia and prostate cancer, and is receiving treatment for both) deserve consideration. Weinstein said that Duncan’s “immune-deficient state” would make him vulnerable in a prison setting.

This position was contested by Morris, who insisted that a period of “bricks and mortar” real jail time of two to four years was a more fitting sentence, with three years “striking the right balance.”

Morris noted that the crimes represented a significant breach of trust, involved multiple victims over a protracted time period spanning several years. He sought a sentence “proportional to the gravity of the offense.”

“These victims went to their doctor, thinking it was a safe space,” said Morris.

Three victim impact statements were entered into the court file. One of the complainants appeared in person to provide her own emotional account before Calderwood. The young woman, who was 16 at the time of the incident with Duncan, recounted the traumatic effect of the experience on her well-being, and said See DUNCAN Page 12

Come hell or high water NPCA has tools to forewarn residents of potential spring flooding

BY DON RICKERS Contributing News Editor It’s spring in Niagara, which means blooming flowers, budding trees, longer days, and warming weather as nature reawakens from its winter slumber.

And depending where you live in the region, it can also mean potential flooding.

Steve Miller, Senior Manager of Water Resources at the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA), spoke to the Voice about the tools the agency uses to deal with such emergencies.

The NPCA is a community-based natural resource management agency that works to protect, enhance, and sustain healthy watersheds. For some 60 years, the NPCA has offered programs and services that focus on flood and hazard management, source water protection, species protection, ecosystem restoration, community stewardship, and land management. The NPCA is one of 36 conservation authorities in the province.

“There are three kinds of flooding, and the NPCA looks after the first two,” said Miller.

“The first is river flooding, when a creek or river overflows its banks. The second is Great Lakes shoreline flooding, which is a result of wave action and storm surges. The third type is urban flooding, which sometimes occurs after a big weather event

when storm sewers back up and flood residential basements.

That’s the responsibility of the local municipality.”

Flood prediction is a complex process, and there is a high degree of dependence on day-today weather forecasts and conditions. NPCA conducts snow surveys twice a month from November to May, where snow at seven sites across the watershed is measured and weighed. This data is collected and analyzed for flooding potential.

“We identify areas that are prone to flooding by doing things like floodplain mapping, and direct new development away from an area that's flood-prone,” said Miller. “People love to build homes around water, so we need a complete flood forecasting and warning program.”

When flooding is imminent, the NPCA issues flood advisories to municipal emergency management officials, the media, and the community at large.

The province has in place flood messaging standards using a colour-coded system, ranging from green (no flooding conditions) to red (flood warning in effect), with water safety statements for recreational anglers, hikers, and boaters.

The NPCA monitors stream flow, rainfall, and other meteorological information at locations across the watershed, through

NPCA a network of stations called a hydrometric network. This specialized equipment measures, records, stores, and transmits data, and allows for the sharing of information in real time.

“A network of gauges throughout the watershed that have been installed on a creeks and rivers that tell us the level of the water, and we have a system of climate stations that provide information on how much snow or rain has fallen,” said Miller. “Every day, a conservation authority staffer checks the levels of the water courses in our area, along with the forecasts put out by En-

vironment Canada, so we can get a sense of what to expect during a weather event.”

NPCA also has access to weather radar from the Buffalo International Airport and Pearson International in Toronto.

“If we get an indication that there is a severe weather event pending with potential flooding, we'll issue a flood bulletin on social media, via our website and an email blast, and also have feeds on Facebook and Twitter,” said Miller. “You can also get an app on your iOS or Android mobile device, called Alertable. It's a free download from the Apple

Store or Google Play, with a link to our website.”

Miller noted that messages can also be geographically targeted, so if there is a storm surge on Lake Erie, only residents living within 300 metres of that shoreline can be notified.

Environment Canada is calling for a generally cooler, wetter spring than we typically would see, which will transition into a warmer, drier summer forecast.

Pelham Garden Club cultivates annual events It's the “Year of the Garden” in Canada

BY DON RICKERS Contributing News Editor The Canadian Garden Council (CGC) has proclaimed 2022 as Canada’s Year of the Garden, a declaration supported by the House of Commons, to honour Canada’s rich garden heritage.

Pelham Garden Club board member Jeanette Dempster told the Voice that a slate of activities to promote and celebrate the splendour of gardens has been planned for May and June.

Founded in 1928, the club was originally known as the Pelham Horticultural Society, and over the years established a variety of annual, community-based plant events. In February 2016, members voted to adopt the name “Pelham Garden Club” as a more inclusive and informal name.

The club worked in conjunction with the Communities in Bloom Committee to establish its Annual Garden Tour and Trillium Awards for best front yards. Youth participation in horticulture has been actively encouraged, with regular donations to E. L Crossley’s horticul-

A special event during the Year of the Garden 2022 will be an invitation to “Live the Garden Life,” an opportuni-

ty to discover the numerous positive benefits of gardening and gardens related to maintaining optimal health.

The event will run Saturday, June 11, from 1 PM at the Meridian Community Centre, in the Accursi Room. It is a free event, but seating is limited, and pre-registration is required.

The featured speaker at the MCC event is horticulture therapist Tammy Proctor, from Homewood Health Centre, one of the largest mental health and addiction facilities in the country.

Homewood offers programs in horticultural therapy designed to awaken creativity, reduce anxiety, and increase awareness of the external environment. Activities range from plant propagation to herbal vinegars, aromatherapy, herbology, and grief gardening.

“We're excited about Tammy’s presentation, because it combines gardening with mental health. A lot of people don't necessarily think of gardening in that context,” said Dempster.

Walk will take place on Saturday June 18, from 1 PM to 5 PM. Garden Walk involves tours of eight private gardens in Pelham, and starts at the Fonthill Bandshell in Peace Park. “When you see things differently, that’s where the magic begins” Photographer John Davidson will present his work at upcoming Pelham Art Festival

BY DON RICKERS Contributing News Editor The 35th annual Pelham Art Festival Show and Sale, May 6 to 8, features 55 artists and artisans. Ahead of this year’s event, the Voice is highlighting winning artists from last year’s competition. Photographer John Davidson is featured this week.

Based out of Oshawa, Davidson enjoyed a successful career as a professor in the School of Media, Art and Design at Durham College.

Today, he is a full-time photographer, who also offers tutoring for small groups or individuals.

“I spend a lot of time in the Toronto area, because there's a lot to shoot, obviously,” Davidson told the Voice. “You sort of have to shoot a lot in Toronto to compete with the Instagram crowd, but it's not that I really want to do that.

I actually find the city fascinating. But I equally love the wilderness, and have spent a lot of time in Northern Ontario, in Killarney Park, and around Sudbury, all up in that area.”

It's a life-changer to see that. I took my photos in black and white, which seemed consistent with the mood.”

Digital SLR and mirrorless cameras are Davidson’s constant companions, and the new creative technologies offered by Lightroom and Photoshop, along with Epson pigment printers, have proven to be fantastic tools. But his first love is traditional negative film.

“I still shoot film, and have started scanning film with my digital cameras. I prefer to shoot the actual negatives on one of my digital cameras, and I get incredible results from that.”

“I have two rolls of film on the go right now. One is in a 1974 Nikon F2, and the other one is a Nikon SM from the late 1980s. And they're perfect. I love using them.

There's just something more tangible in those older film cameras. I still enjoy the process of developing prints from negatives, holding the negatives up to the light,” he said.

A veteran of almost ten years with the Pelham Art Festival, Davidson said he keeps coming back because of the pleasant atmosphere.

“I find the festival volunteers to be extremely helpful. Of all the festivals I attend, the folks in Pelham just really look after both the clients and the artists.”

The Pelham Art Festival Show and Sale’s venue is the Meridian Community Centre in Fonthill.

The Festival is also available online, May 5 to 15, at pelhamartfestival.com.

Opening Night on Friday, May 6 runs 7 PM to 10 PM. Entry is $15, and includes complimentary hors d'oeuvres, live music, and a cash wine bar. Saturday and Sunday, the event runs 10 AM to 5 PM. The entry fee is $7, with a la carte food available for purchase, a cash wine bar, and live music. Children under 12 have free admission.

Proceeds from the festival benefit Pelham libraries, student art scholarships, and community arts projects. The Pelham Art Festival has donated over $458,000 back to the community.

1935 - 2022 Passed away peacefully at Woodlands of Sunset on Saturday, April 2nd 2022, in his 88th year. Beloved husband of 62 years to Corrie (nee Zandvliet). Dear father to Marcel Mooren (Sandra), Wendy Lament (Ray), Monique Cooper (Mark) and predeceased by his dearest son Craig (2010). Proud Opa of Alexander and Meghan Mooren, Ryan, Kyle, and Austin Cooper, and Corinne and Warren Lament. Henry also leaves behind his extended family in Holland who will miss him dearly. Born in Liemuiden, Holland in 1935 to Henry and Ann (nee Borst). Survived by siblings Anni, Bert, Ria and predeceased by siblings Anton, Thys, Alli and Cees. At age 21, Henry spent 16 days travelling to Canada by boat. Once immigrated to Canada, he worked in Simcoe on a tobacco farm. Henry and Corrie married in 1960, and shortly after Henry found a job as a farmer. The two of them bought a farm in Fenwick where they spent their lives together and raised 4 children. As a father Henry was continuously teaching his children the valuable lessons of hard work. A man of many skills, a sheet metal worker, a handyman, but one of his proudest accomplishments was his farm. The beautiful 40-acre property in Fenwick turned out to hold significant memories throughout his lifetime. For over 50 years Henry and Corrie called this farm their home. Henry was a talented man, with many traits to offer.

The lessons he has taught still shine in his children and grandchildren today. To our Husband, Father, and Opa; we are thankful for years of laughs, and love that we shared with you. We hope that Heaven is filled with reruns of Toronto Maple Leafs Games, farming days, western films, and everything you love. The family of Henry Mooren would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Woodlands of Sunset for their care and compassion for Henry while he was in their care. The family received friends at the PELHAM FUNERAL HOME, 1292 Pelham Street, Fonthill on Tuesday, April 5th from 6:00-9:00 pm, prayers took place at 7:00 pm. The Funeral Mass to honor Henry’s life was held at St. Alexander’s Church Wednesday, April 6th at 11:00 am.

Janet Metler passed away peacefully at home with family by her side on Saturday April 2, 2022. Janet went on her own terms in her 91st year to join her beloved late husband Bob (Nov 2011) to square dance their heavenly nights away. Janet was also predeceased by her parents, Lanse and Beth Avery, as well as brothers Russell and David. Her strength and presence will be missed by her sister, Helen Frackelton of Orillia, Ontario. Janet is survived by her nine children, Brian Hudson, Rod Hudson (Jennifer), Bruce Metler, Kathy MacKenzie (Peter), Andrew Metler (Peggy), Brenda Dawson (John Witney), Alice Boisvert, Margaret Metler (Robin), John Metler (Brenda). Along with her 19 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. Janet lived a full and vibrant life with an abundance of love for her family, friends, travel, hard work and adventure. Mom always made her opinion known and if anyone didn’t like it “duck”. We will all tremendously miss her tenacity, quick wit and laughs. She and Bob were married for 56 years, travelled the world together and square danced their way across the US and Canada in her handmade dance outfits. She was an accomplished seamstress making everything from curtains for the cottage to wedding dresses for her daughters. Janet drove school bus for many years and in her spare time worked the 40+ acre fruit farm with Bob and their family. When the work was caught up she and her sister in-law Joan raced their snowmobiles all around the neighbourhood. In the warmer weather she and Bob would party with friends, and loved spending time at their cottage in Port Ryerse. The family would like to sincerely thank the PSWs of “Stay at Home” and palliative care team RN’s Colleen and Jocelyn. Also, to the St. Catharines Hospital 3A section; Thank you.

In 1951, he married Viola (Demaine from Etwell). In 1967, built the first building at Niagara College in Welland and stayed on as maintenance supervisor until retiring in 1990. He was an Elder and on the Board of Managers for First Presbyterian Church North Pelham, a member of Rockway Community Club and member of Fonthill Legion Branch 613. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Semenuk’s gas station owner Peter Semenuk has a new message for motorists passing along Highway 20 at Merrittville Highway. Semenuk’s father emigrated from Ukraine in 1926, when it was still under Soviet control. The term “Borscht” is most often associated with the sour Ukrainian soup made with meat stock and red beets, and commonly includes a variety of other vegetables and sometimes meat or fish. Variations are found across Eastern Europe, and were brought to North America by Jewish and Mennonite immigrants.

Our council agreed to support this proposal but with some reservations. The cost to construct the restoration is estimated to be $200,000 to $300,000, and the financing has to be sourced. Sever-

al councillors firmly stated that the financing needs to be outside of Town finances and all permit fees need to be included. Now we must wait to see the report and cost budget.

Based on the above summary, the Town has spent or contracted to date more than $200,000 and still has a major erosion problem.

A basic engineering principle is that you identify the root cause of a problem— in this case, it is on south side of Highway 20. I have viewed the area more than once, and the problem is that there is no flow control on the outlet (36” diameter)

from the SWP; there is only a steel grating in front of the concrete culvert under Highway 20 (to limit access and stop debris from entering). Based on current construction, there is no engineered flow control (weir, overflow spillway, other design) to control outflow.

observation. He suggests a hickenbottom drainage system, and based on information I have received, there is some buried piping below grade, designed to provide some control of outflow.

In conclusion, the SWP has received a lot of engineering review at the expense of the taxpayers of Pelham. Town Council needs to ensure that the next step resolves the prob-

lem at no cost to taxpayers.

Note: I want to alert all taxpayers of Pelham that SWPs are a major issue in our municipality because of our geological features, and we have more than this location with issues. The Town staff are preparing a report to council in the near future.

Cycling or walking along the Niagara River in Fort Erie today, staring across the swift current, one can visualize exhausted slaves surreptitiously gathering on the New York shore, tantalizingly close to Canada and freedom.

Their desperation to cross the river by any means possible, ferry, rowboat, swimming, even

walking across frozen ice, becomes real.

The route follows the Niagara River from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake, then into St. Catharines and Port Dalhousie, detailing the many locations connected to the Freedom Trail. St Paul’s Church in Fort Erie, whose congregation helped slaves escape and resettle. Little Africa, where many fugitives were helped to transition into self-determination and paid employment by those who had come before. The Niagara Falls British Methodist Episcopalian Church was a social and spiritual hub for many Black refugees.

Windmill Point, just west of Fort Erie on the shore of Lake Erie, offers a humbling side trip. “Looking out over

The Lighthouse Restaurant & Pub at the mouth of Black Creek is a favourite stop for cyclists needing a bite to eat or thirst-quenching brew when riding between Fort Erie and Niagara Falls. How much more alive would their ride become if they realized their lunch stop was originally the Black Creek Tavern and Restaurant, a safe house where slaves crossing from Grand Island could quietly paddle into the creek, then scramble by tunnel directly into the tavern’s basement to avoid detection.

As Archibald says, “It is the history behind these gentle sites that make them powerful.”

The Niagara Parkway Extravaganza ride covers much the same route, but is focused on more traditional tourism sites and activities.

Archibald makes it clear that, “All the information in this book is completely in-

dependent. There have been no payments accepted for positive coverage,” which allows her to be honest in her opinions about the merits of each attraction.

The Canadian History Tour route is packed with trivia that would merely rate a footnote in history books. Crystal Beach’s amusement park, including the Crystal Ballroom, the largest unobstructed dance floor in North America at the time, was founded in 1888 as a religious Chautauqua summer camp. Interesting to know now, but for most of us long-time Niagarans heading to Crystal Beach as teenagers in beat-up old jalopies on a Friday or Saturday night, religion was the last thing we were looking for.

Choose your interest and Archibald has a Niagara route for it. Rural artist workshops and studios are the theme of To the Artists.

The streams cascading over the escarpment are explored in The Quest for the Perfect Waterfall. The Garden of Eden ride reminds us how bountiful Niagara is as it takes us to busy fruit stands and small local markets.

Lovely as Pelham is, and as exciting as walking along Haist Street or the Steve Bauer Trail may be, change

In a section entitled Towns & Cities: Exploring and Routes In and Out, Archibald’s book contains numerous three to five kilometre bike rides in a variety of community cores that can easily be walked or jogged. A leisurely 2.5 K route in Grimsby includes the fourth oldest church in Ontario, the oldest inhabited building between Niagara and Kingston, a house that served as a barracks in the War of 1812 with a prison cell in the basement, and more.

As expected, there are detailed chapters on bikes and equipment, road and personal safety, and other cycling tips. Traffic levels and road configurations may have changed due to recent development in some communities, rendering a few routes outdated. In my opinion the book’s worth and charm lies in its storytelling and history. I can’t imagine an easier way for those new to Niagara, or looking to connect more intimately with our community, to do so than cycling, walking or driving the routes in this book.

However, Haun questioned what population growth metrics the consultants used, saying their figures were “very modest.”

Palomba said the formula used was a low-end growth rate of one percent per year, and a high-end rate of two percent. Essentially, the latter lines up with Niagara Region’s future growth projections for Pelham, which forecasts an additional 9,000 residents — or roughly a 52 percent increase — over the next 29 years. While there is no guarantee each year sees the same growth rate, the parking study only looked ahead for the next decade, which estimated 20 percent population growth on the high side.

Palomba added that another parking study should be undertaken a few years down the road, stating that 2023 or 2024 still may not be soon enough to truly gauge if pandemic trends remain — be it the proliferation of work-from-home jobs, or different dining habits that see many people opt for take-out or delivery over visiting restaurants.

Haun, unimpressed, asked the consultants if they even lived in the area.

“Is your location, are you out of Toronto by chance?” she questioned.

“No, we’re out of St. Catharines,” Palomba replied.

The consultants also reiterated modern-day spacing and sustainability issues faced by virtually every growing municipality in North America— that at some point in the future, there will simply be no room for more cars. As such, in addition to expanded parking capacity at the MCC and in Ridgeville, the study recommended increased cycling and pedestrian connections, as well as public transit options.

Speaking on building more parking, Junkin asked the consultants, “Is it safe to say no one builds for the peak? Because I already know what the answer is.”

“I’m not sure how many times I’ve suggested this, but … as we move forward with parking it doesn’t have to be black-top,” the Ward 1 Councillor said.

One idea Stewart has floated in the past is a gravel parking lot on public land immediately east of the existing MCC lot towards Rice Road. The parking study suggested that area could be developed into a paved lot with up to 200 more spaces — which is above their own estimate of the 125-170 extra spaces the community centre currently needs.

Hildebrandt and Stewart also took issue with the idea that private and other public lots offset parking demand.

“We as a Town cannot reasonably expect people coming to a Town event and using Town facilities to use parking that’s owned and provided by other churches and schools and businesses,” Stewart said. “For example, there’s an event at the community centre this weekend, and one of the people involved with organizing the event suggested if it was tight for parking, to park over at Food Basics.

Now that’s totally unacceptable, because when you look at the rate the stores in that plaza pay to be there, we should not be encouraging people to clog up their parking.”

SIDEBAR A parking solution fumbled

The parking study brought to council cited Ridgeville as a priority that needs immediate addressing, stating that parking at the corner of Canboro and Effingham was currently running at 160 percent capacity. Consultants RV Anderson recommended pursuing a previous Town idea to convert the current water station on the southeast corner into a parking lot, a proposal that first came before council in June 2019. Public Works Director Jason Marr said the existing water pump could be moved nearby, but that demolishing the Town-owned shed on the property would require that storage facility to be relocated elsewhere. The study also recommended pedestrian crosswalks at Canboro and Effingham, and further urbanization westward on Canboro for additional street parking. In February, with no public discussion, council quietly opted to drop funding for Ridgeville parking expansion from the Town’s 2022 operating budget.

Niagara cycling, history, humour, all in one book

T

his book is dedicated to Harriet Tubman, a conductor in the Underground Railroad and a woman of enormous courage.” When a guide book on bicycling in Niagara begins with this dedication, you suspect it might be special. Another clue is when you realize that the book is 324 pages long.

Marg Archibald’s Excellent Cycling Adventures in Niagara came to me recently as a surprise gift from a friend.

I had seen the book, published in 1998, before, and it held no interest. I arrogantly assumed no one, especially an interloper from southern Alberta as Archibald was,

their thoughts and secrets on Niagara as a cycling destination. She relied heavily on the Freewheelers, Niagara’s preeminent non-competitive cycling club, to provide safe, interesting routes.

John Helm, a Freewheeler, ground-truthed every route and all of the book’s 68 maps.

One needn’t be a cyclist to enjoy this book, or travel its 14 themed intra-Niagara road trip routes by car or motorcycle. Its shortest rides and accompanying thorough directions make for interesting walks.

When cycling west along Sugarloaf Street from H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park, located on the Port Colborne waterfront, I always turn left onto Tennessee Avenue through massive stone gates. It’s a short street that twists through ancient sand

As we so often do, I spent a few minutes last week glancing through it to make sure my baseless pre-judgment was correct, and quickly realized how wrong I’d been. This book is a wonderfully entertaining mix of tales and anecdotes about Niagara’s history, and a bonanza of local trivia shared with perfect wit and subtle humour.

Archibald enlisted many local riders, including Pelham’s Steve Bauer, Regional Councillors, and transportation planners to share

dunes. Beautiful old homes overlook the bay on its south side, more modest homes perch on now-manicured dunes to the north.

Tennessee Avenue has a very unique history of which I was totally unaware until reading Archibald’s book.

“In 1880, Mr. P. McIntyre, a prominent Memphis, Tennessee businessman, took his family to visit relatives in Toronto. But their visit ended in a tent on the shores of Lake Erie,” states Archibald. She goes on to say that McIntyre’s daughter had become desperately ill during the trip, and this portion of Lake Erie shoreline was “the one place in the world conducive to her recovery.”

McIntyre’s daughter did recover, the family fell in love with the breezy beach, and within a few years 15 Memphis families and their servants had built palatial summer homes on this stretch of waterfront. They played tennis, rowed, held fancy balls and brought famous chefs from Buffalo to cook for them. The area was called Solid Comfort, and it was guarded by those same stone gates we cycle

through today.

Archibald’s book is absolutely filled with similar stories about almost every community and historic area in the Region. Unfortunately, Pelham is only mentioned in conjunction with the Fonthill Kame and views from the escarpment. Better that than Archibald’s derisive description of Jordan: “Exploring Jordan would be the world’s tiniest bike ride.”

It is in the themed Great Rides section that Excellent Cycling Adventures in Niagara shines.

The sacrificial visitor

P

opular author and pastor Max Lucado tells the amazing true story of Eddie Rickenbacker in his book, “In The Eye of the Storm.”

In his usual creative fashion, Lucado then applies it to Good Friday, which we are remembering this week.

The seagull

With a name like Rickenbacker, you can probably guess Eddie’s ethnic heritage. It reminds us Canadians of a former German-Canadian Prime Minister with the name Diefenbaker. Eddie served in the American armed forces during World War II. Instead of heading east to fight the Germans in Europe, he was sent west to fight the Japanese in Asia.

In October 1942, he was sent on an important mission to deliver a message in person to General Douglas MacArthur. Perhaps the top brass was afraid the message could get intercepted and deciphered if sent another way. Flying in a B-17 “Flying Fortress” with his crew, they headed across the south Pacific. Unfortunately, they lost their way, the fuel ran out and they crashed. Fortunately, the crew of eight survived the crash and escaped on life rafts.

They bravely hoped and prayed for rescue, battling the weather, the sharks and the sun. After their rations ran out, they had another enemy — hunger. One afternoon, after a devotional service and fervent prayer the men tried to rest. Rickenbacker dozed off with his hat over his eyes. Suddenly, something landed on his head. He instinctively knew it must be a seagull. He had no idea what a seagull would be doing so far from land.

He caught it. The starving men ate the bird but saved

the intestines which they used as fish bait. The fish they caught enabled them to survive until they were eventually rescued.

The Savior

As we approach Good Friday, we too have a sacrificial visitor. Scripture teaches that Jesus is also the co-Creator and Sustainer of our world. But when he was born in a Bethlehem stable two millennia ago, he also became an in-person, in-the-flesh visitor to our planet. He became one of us, sharing our humanity.

The remarkable (but short) earthly life of Jesus had a very specific purpose.

His name (meaning “Savior”) was no coincidence.

He was born to die to satisfy and pay the penalty of human sin. No human martyr could accomplish that. Only a perfectly holy “God-man” could. Jesus accomplished his purpose on the first Good Friday when he went to the cross.

That weekend became the watershed of human history. Since then, millions of people from all over the globe have humbled themselves, confessed their sins, and received His sacrifice as a free gift. The family of God extends across the ages See FAITH LIFT Page 12

PETERS, Veronica (Ronnie) It is with the heaviest of hearts that the family of Veronica (Ronnie) Peters announce her unexpected passing after a lengthy and courageous battle with multiple health issues on April 2, 2022, at the age of 77. Beloved wife of Don Peters of almost 59 years. Loving mother of Kim Molnar, Steven Peters, and Kevin Peters (Anne-Marie). Devoted Gramma of Sarah, Michael, and Alexandria (Andie). Ronnie was predeceased by her cherished son Steven and her parents Julia and Matthew Malesky. She was the “baby” of five sisters: the late Ann Bialik (the late George), Susan Sunega (the late Joe), Mary Babela (the late Paul), and Elizabeth Reusch (the late Ernie). She was also a loved Auntie and friend that will be fondly remembered by all her nieces, nephews, and friends. As a florist, Ronnie turned a creative hand to everything she did. Whether arranging flowers, making meals and gifts for those she loved, or bringing people together — Ronnie’s creative talent, and kindness, could transform the ordinary into something beautiful. She was a cherished Mom to her children (and her pets) and devoted wife to Don. Don and Ronnie called each other “Bob and Emily” and while she would say Bob was her greatest annoyance, he was also her love. She was a kind-hearted, gentle, and beautiful woman and her loss leaves a hole in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice in Ronnie’s memory. A small gathering of family and friends will take place to celebrate her life.

Arrested and charged with Clapp’s murder on October 10, 2020, Lusted testified that he was “dope sick,” or experiencing drug withdrawal, during the commission of the crime. The pair had purchased fentanyl and crystal methamphetamine the night the two drove around Pelham in search of a trailer to steal.

Lusted’s criminal record includes another murder case. In 2006, he was implicated in the death of a Ham-

ilton resident, and pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact in connection with that fatal execution-style shooting, by helping to burn the victim’s body. He was sentenced to ten years, and was granted day parole in 2015.

As of 2014, Lusted had accumulated 40 convictions, including assault, thefts, impersonation, and parole violations. In his own words at a previous trial, he declared, “I'm not sitting up here telling you or the jury or anybody that I'm a choir boy. I'm a career criminal.”

Victim impact statements are expected to be presented on Tuesday, June 7, when Lusted is back in St. Catharines court for sentencing.

Pelham Soccer hires new Technical Director

BY DON RICKERS Contributing News Editor Pelham Soccer President Erin Pasma has announced that the club has hired its first Technical Director, Tuukka Salonen.

“This is a new role, a new endeavor,” she said. “The club started talking about it a couple years ago, and decided that this is the way to go. Tuukka will be working with all the teams and coaches throughout our system. He will be a great asset not just for our more competitive players, but for all players, who will be able to tap into his expertise.”

Salonen played professionally for TPS Turku, TSG Hoffenheim, FSV Frankfurt, Chemnitzer FC, and KFC Uerdingen.

Born in Finland, he spent many years competing in Germany before relocated to Canada in 2011. He has been training Canadian youth players since then. Pasma said that he will be running various clinics for Pelham Soccer Club players.

His coaching philosophy centres on the development model created by Horst Wein, the late master coach from Germany who was revered as the world’s foremost authority on developing youth soccer players. Salonen plans to introduce FUNiño, created by Wein, which features three-on-three games that develop passing options, on-field perception, decision making, and generally lays a solid foundation for game intelligence.

“We are so excited to have Tuukka join us,” said Pasma.

“The 700 boys and girls in our club, spread across 15 travel teams and 40 house-league teams, will surely benefit from Tuukka’s experience.”

Pelham Soccer covers a wide spectrum of player ages.

“We start at age three, and plan to expand it this year to age 23,” said Pasma. “We even have a senior ladies team.”

Home games are mainly played at Glynn A. Green Public School in Fonthill, and at Centennial Park in Fenwick. The synthetic turf field at E. L. Crossley is also a resource.

Passover is steeped in tradition. Many of these traditions involve symbolic foods which tell the story of the Israelites and their miraculous exodus from Egyptian slavery.

One such food is charoset (also spelled haroset), which symbolizes the mortar the Israelites used to build bricks when they were slaves in Egypt. Charoset is a fruit relish used on small sandwiches made from matzoh and bitter herbs. The bittersweet taste is supposed to teach the bitterness of bondage and the sweetness of freedom.

Passover celebrants can make their own charoset by following this recipe, courtesy of Israel My Glory magazine.

Charoset Makes 15 tablespoons 1 1⁄2 2 1

large apple, any variety cup chopped nuts tablespoons honey teaspoon cinnamon Small amount of lemon juice (optional)

The easiest method is to put the apples and nuts into a food processor and pulse until finely diced. Sprinkle enough lemon juice on the mixture to keep the apples from turning brown. Then mix in the other ingredients.

Some people also mix in a little grape juice or wine. The recipe is very forgiving, so the measurements do not have to be exact.
