Bikers gearing up for Biketoberfest event The largest bike event in Niagara begins on Friday, September 16 at 6:00 pm starting at the Original Clare’s Cycle on Regional Road 20.

The kick off to Biketoberfest, Ride of the Flags, will leave Clare’s Cycle and proceed to Welland County Motorcycle Club (WCMC) Race Track where festivities will take place provided by Welland County Motorcycle Club.

“All are welcome to attend Ride of the Flags and

the fun at WCMC Race Track at no charge,” says Bruce Bissell, event charman.

WCMC has arranged to have both the flat track and the motocross track open for making practice runs. The food booth and the club house will both be open for food and refreshments.

“You will also be able to get a ticket from the Fabulous Fenwick Lions for their 2011 Harley-Davidson Road King Classic

(first prize) Raffle; second prize $1,000 and third prize $500,” says Bissell.

Bissell encourages folks to come early and have breakfast, check out the vendors and get last-minute tickets for the 2011 Harley-Davidson Road King Classic which will

be drawn at 5 pm. Tickets are $20 each and all proceeds are going to Lions Foundation of Canada, Welland Hospital Foundation, Pelham Cares and Lions Community Projects.

Enjoy the live entertainment by David & Jamie and More Bad News & the Horns From Hell. Also, people may enter their bikes in the Show & Shine event. And for those looking to sell their bikes, they can take advantage of the ‘For Sale’ Bike Coral.

Fonthill Singer’s Corners members boast busy calendar You’ll have to wear your running shoes if you hope to keep up to the Fonthill-Singer’s Corners Women’s Institute members this month. A busy calendar of events was outlined by the President Betty Ralph and Secretary Marion Egerter when the branch met at the home of Pam Bronn recently.

First on the list was a discussion of exhibits to be entered in the Niagara Regioinal Exhibitiion.

These must be placed on Tuesday, September l3 to be judged for the opening of the Fair which will happen on September l5.

Members were pleased to learn that the 24-month calendar produced by the Friends of the Lee committee will be unveiled at a festive launch on Wednesday, September 14 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the driveway of the Erland Lee (Museum) Home on Ridge Road in Stoney Creek. This committee has been working

tirelessly since last year to have the Home reopened after last year’s closure due to perceived minor repairs. The calendar will feature scenes of the Lee Home, Battlefield House and reenactments of the War of l8l2 in which the Lee family and neighbouring Green family played a significant part.

On September l9 at 9:30 am there will be a membership workshop at Rittenhouse Hall at the Vineland Experimental Station in Vineland. Bring a bag lunch.

The Niagara District W. I board will meet at 9:00 am on Monday, September 26 at the Bertie and Clinton office at Turner’s Corners. Following the meeting will be a session of “laughter Yoga” with Carolyn Shannon. After lunch (voluntary donation) Dorothy Seabourne will present her book “I did it - you can too” The Hamilton Area Convention will be held on

October 24 at Casa Dante in Welland. Cost is $27.

In other correspondence it was noted that a yellow ruffled iris has been developed for the Women’s Institute to be presented to new members who join this organization, and to the recruiter.

Another box of knitted washcloths, afghans and baby clothes is ready to send to Canada Comforts to be distributed in developing countries. Flannelette diapers 27” x 27” are needed.

Sophie Paroschy, the Education convener, gave a report on the opening of the DSBN Academy in the former Empire School in Wellland. This venture will be followed with interest. It was also mentioned that Brock University now boasts l8,000 students enrolled, thus proving the need for higher education in this area envisioned by the Allanburg Women’s Institute so many years ago.

Trails are a hidden jewel here in Fonthill

BY BRIAN BATY Regional Councillor One of the best known features of Fonthill is the Steve Bauer Trail system. Lesser known are the trails that cross through the headwaters of the Twelve Mile Creek.

These trails include the John Nemy Nature Trail system which originates in Marlene Stewart Streit Park and the property to the north, the Lathrop Nature Preserve, which is supported by the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

While I have known about these trails for years, it is only recently that I set out to hike the area and dis-

cover its splendor.

The John Nemy trail system can be accessed from the Marlene Stewart Streit Park. If driving to the site, a parking lot is located at the bottom of the hill in front of the ball field and swimming pool. Considerable work has been done on the trail system to provide boardwalks and stairs to cross the wetlands and hills that loop through the property.

Within minutes one is unaware that this property is so close to the urban core of the town. One can see a babbling brook running through the property at several locations. The waters are the headwaters of the Twelve Mile Creek.

This watercourse is the only cold water stream in Niagara and supports the only population of Brook Trout in the region. While many watercourses in Niagara are cloudy or turbid, it is refreshing to see the headwaters of this creek which are crystal clear.

There are two large loops on this trail system with a smaller loop to the northeast. An access point to the trails is found on Elm Street and Giles Crescent which is one block west of Pelham Street. If one stays on the west side of the trail system, the John Nemy trail intersects with the trails of the Lathrop property further to the north.

Longtime citizens will know the Lathrop property on Haist Street as it abutted the former Davis Hall which stood on top of the valley system to the east. At one time the valley area was a source of sand and gravel. The chosen access point for the trails was west of Hurricane Road where it ends at Pelham Street.

Following a short walk along the fence beside the apartment complex, one can see a pond at the bottom of the hill fed by the waters of the Twelve Mile Creek. A pair of Blue Herons provided a display of aerial acrobatics as they ascended from the pond to the forest behind. A

flock of Canada Geese and a few ducks swam across the waterway. Once into the property, one is awed by the size of the trees.

Within minutes the noise of traffic on Highway 20 disappears and one is immersed in the forest splendor. Half the distance to Haist Street is a sizeable pond which probably exists as a product of the former sand and gravel operation.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada has partnered with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Land Care Niagara and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority to restore the property. Native species have been planted to

How should Pelham and the Region spend your money in 2012?

What are some specific things that you think the Region should do or things that we should stop doing in 2012? How can we make both Pelham and all of Niagara better places to live, work, grow, and play?

Pelham’s budget: I am very proud that our Pelham Town Council is continuing with the practice of inviting you and your neighbours and friends to get involved in the Town’s Budget.

Town Council will begin our 2012 budget process with a special public meeting where we listen to you about what you would like to see in future budgets on Tuesday, October 11 at 7:00 pm.

(We are still finalizing the location.)

Pelham Council first started this type of a “prebudget consultation” in January 2007 for the 2007 Budget. In subsequent years, we had special meetings in October for the following budget year.

I am very excited that we are undertaking this consultation process again. It is so important to hear directly from you about your needs, wants, and ideas. Our community improves when more and more people become involved in its success!

Council is set to adopt this budget schedule: Pre-Budget Consultation – beginning October 11, 2011; Draft Capital Budget Available to the Public – November 25; Draft Capital Budget Presented to Committee – November 28; Council Approve Capital Budget – December 5; Draft Operating, Water & Sewer Budgets Available to the Public – January 27, 2012; Draft Operating, Water & Sewer Budgets to Committee – January 30; Council Approve Operating, Water & Sewer Budgets – February 6.

McDonald’s awards scholarship to student McDonald’s Restaurant in Fonthill recently announced the recipient of the annual McDonald’s Employee Scholarship. At an awards ceremony held at the McDonald’s Restaurant, Greg Jennings of Fonthill, an employee for over four years, was honoured for making a difference at work, at school and in the community.

Welland Camera Club begins new season Practice makes perfect, and the saying certainly applies to good photography.

Mark Robinson, publicity director for the Welland Camera Club, encourages photographers of all levels to consider getting involved with the club.

“Joining the club will help you to improve your photographic skills, meet new people and enjoy a little friendly competition,” says Robinson.

The Welland Camera Club is dedicated to the advancement of colour and black and white photography through workshops, field trips, presentations, clinics and monthly competitions.

“Experienced members

are always available and eager to assist with any questions or challenges newer photographers may experience,” says Robinson.

This year the club has invested in some new technology to help automate competitions. Registered members who are actively involved in any of the numerous competitions may now submit all photos online quickly and easily eliminating much of the time that was once required to send and document images via email.

The first meeting will feature the presentation, “Craft and Vision: Preparing for Competition”

by Peter Ferguson. The Welland Camera Club

meets bi-monthly at 7:30 pm on the second and fourth Wednesday, September through May at Wesley United Church, 2nd Floor, 244 First Avenue North, Welland.

Crossley begins the year with a barbeque E.L. Crossley’s newly formed Students’ Council provided a barbeque for their incoming Grade 9 students and their parents onThursday, September 1, to welcome them into the Cyclone family.

Set up at the registration were booths showcasing Crossley’s vast array of clubs and activities—from rowing to music to concert band, and of course, Students’ Council. Many incoming students signed up to become a part of the

school’s clubs, and filled up the sign-up sheet to run for the position of Grade 9 representative. As all the kids gear up for back to school, E.L. Crossley’s Students’ Council was busy planning for ways to enhance the year of their fellow students. Future events include a Grade 9 retreat to Burgoyne Woods (where the class of 2015 can bond together over a day of activities), a spirit week, and a “black light” dance.

Fenwick artist’s works on display at Welland Library

BY WAYNE CREIGHTON Special to the Voice Born in Kenya, artist Vanessa Brownbridge has lived in several different countries around the world but has never felt more welcome or at home.

“The local art community has just been so supportive and wonderful,” says Brownbridge, who

has a studio on Maple Street in Fenwick and recently became the 31st artist to have their works exhibited on the Welland Civic Centre’s Wall of Art. “What a wonderful idea, the Wall of Art is,” says Brownbridge. “It’s in a high traffic area near the library and it is excellent exposure for my work.”

“I was looking at the work of the artist before me (photographer Larissa Marks) and thinking how

different it was from me but that’s a great thing. It gives artists from all mediums a chance for that much needed exposure,” she says.

Brownbridge describes herself as a self-taught artist who has been inspired and delighted by all the different mediums at her disposal.

She enjoys drawing images from her native Africa such as lions and has more recently enjoyed

doing abstracts.

Her work will hang at the northwest entrance (near the Welland library) for the months of September and October.

The Art Task Force is now booking artists for 2012. Artists who wish to have their work displayed at the Welland Civic Centre can call 905-732-2840.

This week in DelGobbo Law U8 Pelham Panthers finish league play baseball...

The Pelham Minor Baseball Association held its annual Championship Day at Harold Black Park on Sunday August 28th, with players and teams from Rookie Ball through to Midget competing for division championships and awards.

The Miller Restoration Rookie Ball team won its semi-final game in the morning, and advanced to the finals in the afternoon, defeating Beamsville to capture the division. All of the hard work of the season came down to the last game, and we are happy to report that Pelham came out on top with a decisive victory! Although everyone played hard, Trent Furlong is due the credit of a beautiful pop fly catch and “almost” captured a double play. During a tentative, possible come back inning for Beamsville, Matthew Martel made two quick plays to Wyatt Gibson at home plate, stopping one run and subsequently clos-

ing out the inning. Carter Teal and Matthew Martel shut down the final inning with a second to first out, and Sammy Ugulini sent us to “hat tossing” victory with the final fielding play.

The M&M Meat Shops Mosquito team captured the Pelham division championship, and the My Place Bar and Grill Peewee team won their Pelham division.

PMBA players compete in Pitch, Hit and Run events to finish out the season, and the top 3 winners in each division were as follows: T-Ball - Elliott Depagter, Luke Breadner, Jillian Reynolds; Rookie Ball - Carter Teal, Sammy Ugulini, Nolan Killeen; Mosquito - Ryan Dykstra, Callon Saldutto, Charlie Devries; Peewee - Holli Zwierschke, Sean Hookey, Carter McColl; Bantam Brian Cunningham, Gavin Dudzik, Eric Deba; Midget - Greg Lipinski, Mitchell Deba, Tyler Young.

The DelGobbo Law U8 Pelham Panthers finished league play in convincing fashion with a 5-0 win over Lincoln. An outstanding game by Noah Wigglesworth for his first shutout of the season. He received strong support from the defenders. Jacob Martin and Zachary Kuhn shared the left defender role and both also took some turns up the field. Sam Atherton and Isaac Pasma blan-

keted the right side of the field to stop the Lincoln attack. The middle of the defence was anchored by Evan Howey and Tyler Britton. Matthew Martel and Ian Safranyos combined for several nice passing plays that lead to a goal for each of them.

Alex Loscavo worked a give and go play with Luke DelGobbo that resulted in a goal on a blast by Luke.

Luca DeChellis scored

the fourth goal on a nice chip shot that eluded the goalie.Evan Howey scored the final goal on a penalty kick.Riley Bleich and Luca DeChellis controlled the midfield play with some hard tackles.The team finished with a league record of 9 wins 4 losses and 1 tie and missed first place

in the U8 Niagara Youth Soccer League by only one win. The boys should be extremely proud of themselves for their outstanding efforts thus far.

The U8 boys open their playoffs at home against hard charging Thorold on Wednesday September 7.

It’s possible to get rich helping the hospital Tickets are on sale for Welland Hospital Foundation’s 10th Annual Cash Lottery with prizes totalling $18,000. “Tickets have been available to past purchasers since August 1st and sales are off to a good start.� says Lori Pottle, Fund Development Assistant. “Approximately 1,200 of the tickets have already been sold. Now the public can access them and sales typically pick up.�

The cost is $10 each or 6/$50 and only 4,500 tickets are available for the draw that traditionally sells out.

The top prize is $10,000; second is $2,500; third is $1,500; fourth is $1,000; fifth is $500 and 20 additional $100 prizes. Odds of winning are great.

Money raised will purchase equipment for the Welland Hospital Site of the Niagara Health System. The foundation’s goal for 2011-2012 is 1

million dollars. The foundation is the main source of funding for equipment purchases and the list this year for the Welland site is over $7 million.

An early bird draw for $500 was added in 2006 and is included again this year for any tickets purchased prior to Dec. 2.

The early bird draw will be held on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. The main prize draw will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. Both draws will be held at the Seaway Mall.

GIANTFM will again be on hand to perform the draws and announce the winners live on air. They have been a partner in the draw since the first year. “With the draws being held following Christmas, it’s not too early to be thinking about gifts for those hard to buy for people,� explains Peter Allen, Special Events Chair. “What better gift

than supporting your community hospital and possibly walking away with a cash prize. Pelham Library wants to hear from all local residents The Pelham Public Library is releasing a survey, asking how Pelham residents use and regard library services. “Whether or not you use the Library regularly, we would like your opinion,� says Stephanie Stowe, library director.

As a result of input from the last two Strategic Plans there have been improvements to buildings, services and programs at the Pelham Public Library over the past eight years. With the assistance of funding from

the Ontario Trillium Foundation, these surveys will be the cornerstone of the Pelham Public Library Strategic Plan 2011-2014.

The survey will be available in print at all library locations beginning September 14. If on-line is more convenient, the identical survey is available via the library website at www.pelhamlibrary.on.ca.
