A team of local children are set to represent Canada on the international stage using colourful interlocking plastic bricks and an accompanying array of gears, minifigures and various other parts.

The group called the Lego Da Vinci robotics team, uses Lego pieces to create a robotic device to complete various tasks. The team began when Zachary Cheung was on vacation and witnessed first-hand the popular competition in action.

Robotics (From Page 1) “My family went to a competition in Germany as visitors. After watching them compete, we wanted to start our own team,� Cheung said. “The next year, we made the team and came first in our regional competition and got the rising star award at provincials.�

This year, the team repeated at the Regional competition and finished fifth at provincials, qualifying them for the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) International Festival held in Brazil.

The robotics program for 9 to 14 year olds, looks to get children excited about science and technology, while teaching them valuable employment and life skills. Teams, composed of up to ten children with at least one adult coach, can also be associated with a pre-existing club or organization, homeschooled, or just be a group of friends who wish to do something awesome.

Teams in competition gather together to compete in 32 different missions. The robot, which has five different attachments, earn points for completion in each category.

Each member of the team plays a vital role in creating a winning product. The team – Scott Hooper, Natasha Wells, Kristen Wells, Jacob Cheung, Connor

Jackson and Jeb Dayaram – bring a personalized approach to creating a single robot to compete with. “The part I love about it is the programing and working on the computer,�

Hooper says. “We have others who specialize in the building of the project, so there are many different areas to work on during the build.�

The Lego Da Vinci’s robotic team are the only representatives from Canada attending the tournament in September.

Despite the potential challengers from across the globe, the biggest battle has been fundraising.

Flying to Brazil isn’t cheap. With hotel expenses among a variety of other costs, they are relying on community support to make their dreams come true. “It’s tricky to do a fundraiser in a small town,� Hooper says. “But people are becoming more aware on what we are doing and how much it means to us to represent our country in such a unique event so the support has slowly picked up.�

Most recently, work began in Fenwick with the full revitalization project underway with upgrades to the road, sidewalks and the overall beautification. It’s expected to be completed by Oct. 27.

Despite the detour signs posted around town, many people are upset with traffic being halted day after day. The long delays are also taking a toll on small business owners. Many business owners said they understand the need for construction, but admitted they were concerned about customers and tourists in a town that relies on summer shoppers.

Pirates kick off season Sept. 12 BY STEPHEN DYELL

for the VOICE The Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL) season will begin on Sept. 12 for the Pelham Pirates as they welcome the Ancaster Avalanche.

The Avalanche took the season series 4-2 last year, handing the Pirates their worst loss of the season, a 14-5 thumping, in the regular season finale.

On Sept. 13, the Pirates will head to Fort Erie before returning home the following Tuesday for a game against the Thorold Blackhawks. Their first match-up against a potential new rival in the Wellland Jr. Canadi-

ans will be on Sept. 26, while the defending Sutherland Cup champions, Caledonia Convairs, come to town on Oct.17.

Pirates are currently finishing their conditioning camps, with the last one being held this Thursday at Ridley College. The team will then enter training camp in preparation for their season opener in September.

Martial Arts

After 30 years in business, Joe Fournier still loves going to work everyday.

“I’ve been in the business long enough where clients who I started with, as young men and women, are now married and bringing their kids to train alongside them. I’m training kids of kids which shows how unbelievable the support of the community has been.”

Fornier, has remained dedicated to the preservation of traditional martial arts and encouraging students to be the best that they can be both in, and outside the dojo.

He’s witnessed dozens and dozens of students receive black belts but says the biggest reward of his job is watching children come into his martial arts centre lacking any form of motivation and leaving with their head high.

“Nothing beats seeing a kid come in who lacks confidence, and a short time later, they are improving in school and other areas of life,” Fournier said. “It’s more than just martial arts, as we teach respect for one another.”

Fournier recently found a new home for his students.

After 25 years on Hwy. 20, he moved into the Pelham Arena last April. He said for the last several years, he’d been on the hunt for a new central location but didn’t have much luck. He began speaking with the Town, and quickly made the move into the arena a short time later. Something that not only benefits him, but his students too.

“It’s easier when the kids can walk or ride their bike down without the parents worrying about them taking a dangerous road to get there. Our old location, children and teens needed a parent to drop them off so the move fits perfectly for everyone.”

While he has a new home, it’s remained the same style of martial arts. Many centres have begun incorporating the recent trend of mixed martial arts into training, Fournier decided to stick with the traditional method of teaching.

“Kids should not be learning that fighting is the answer. Those guys are physical talented in what they do, but it’s not what I teach,” he said. “When I teach, it’s about self-defence. You do what is necessary to fend off your attacker and leave. We’re not aiming to destroy anyone, we just want the kids to be able to protect themselves.”

S

inging without music. That’s what the ladies of Sing Niagara have mastered in their 21 years of existence.

Those members, who come from backgrounds across the globe, are Niagara’s only all female vocal group dedicated to superior singing and entertaining performances in the a cappella style of four-part harmony.

The history of Sing Niagara began in October of 1993, when the chorus received their charter from Harmony Inc., a non-profit vibrant international organization of woman singers, whose purpose is to empower all women through education, friendship and a cappella singing in the barbershop style.

A year later, they captured first place in the Harmony, Inc. International competition, starting the rise of the local singing group.

Marlene Snook, President of Sing Niaga-

ra, describes the group as family bonded together through song.

“Everyone sings. Sometimes people are too shy to get on stage but that’s what makes our group so great. Singing makes you happy and doing it with so many wonderful people, it makes it all worth it.”

With no age-limit or talent evaluation, Sing Niagara remains open to everyone to try. With members ranging from Japan and Europe, they take pride in the diversity within the group.

“We love to have that international flavour,” Snook says. “Music is that common thread that we’re all working towards. We always want to perfect our performances, so anybody is welcome to come join our journey.”

Snook, who calls Pelham home, managed and sung for the group the past several years. Singing in Christmas shows, fundraisers and in venues across Niagara, they are also in a competitive market.

Competitions are amongst other groups within Harmony Inc., where judges use their ears to rank each performance. The group has travelled across North America

to compete, earning numerous awards throughout the years.

“When you are singing a cappella, you don’t have an instrument to fill in if you make a mistake. That’s the thrill of performing as everyone must work together to make it happen.”

She says everyone plays a part in the performance. Some do bass, while others belt out the lyrics, making each performance a team effort.

The team effort also applies to their yearly fundraising efforts. The group does a once-a-year show where donations are collected to go towards paying for hall rentals, costumes and travelling expenses.

Snook says the community and sponsors have been great supporting them over the years and hopes more people will take notice of the power of a cappella.

“Music makes you feel good,” Snook says. “People always sing in the shower and in the car, so we’re offering a stage to showcase their talents with a great group of women.”

Woods wins science award at AIDS Conference in Australia A former residents received national attention after winning an award from the International AIDS Society (IAS).

for the VOICE In their last game, the Pelham Peewee Giants took on the Pelham Peewee Orioles on the diamond.

With the Giants leading by one, Orioles Spencer Klieniewski, Kory Yoder, Melanie Beeke and Kyle Yoder all took walks to bring in a run. Shortly after, Aiden Belding got a hit down the middle to bring in two more runs to give the Orioles the lead.

Giants Forest Turpel was walked right after but was caught running to second by the quick throw of catcher Brock Pellow, however they managed to score one run in the inning, pulling the game close at 3-2.

With Tristan Barnhart pitching for the Giants, Pellow, Zach Baltrusiunas and Ben Shirton all reached the bag with hits, with Shirton getting two RBI’s. The offence continued with Jonah Lohr single to left field, scoring

another run.

Later in the bottom of the inning, they added three runs from Andrew Avolio, Klieniewski and Yoder, making it 9-2 for the Orioles.

James Nero enters the game to pitch for the Giants but he could not slow down the Orioles who add three more runs in the inning.

The Giant’s Ben Mann rallied some offence, with hard hit to centre field in the top of the 5th inning with Pellow pitching. Mann runs hard from second base towards third but is thrown out by Owen Debruin.

The Orioles quickly closed the door on any potential comebacks with strong play from Melanie Beeke, winning the game convincingly 13-2.

Kaeshammer dazzles Fonthill Bandshell crowd Last Thursday in Peace Park, the highly anticipated performance by Michael Kaeshammer took place.

Playing original songs from his albums and songs of the past, his fingers dazzled up and down the piano, which was also the first time one had been brought to the bandshell.

The vast array of jazz, soul, pop and R&B influences, served up fresh, piping hot, and with a huge helping of joy on the side continued long into the evening.

“For me the performance is as much about the energy coming off the stage as the energy coming from the audience. It’s about being myself, writing from the heart and showing my love for life,” Kaeshammer stated on his website. “That’s what I want to convey. After the show, people ask me, ‘do you really have that much fun?’ And I say ‘you don’t know the half of it. It’s even more exhilarating than it looks’.”

The performance was dubbed one of the biggest draws of the 2014 Fonthill Bandshell concert series – and it did not disappoint. Kaeshammer, who played

at the 2006 and 2008 Olympics, brought something new and it worked as concert-goers spoke highly of the performance when they were leaving the park.

Kaeshammer will now be headed to Vancouver on Aug. 16 before heading to perform at Subculture in New York City.

UP NEXT AT THE FONTHILL BANDSHELL: Saturday Night at the Grand Ole JAMBOREE is a musical tribute to the Country Classics of yesteryear featuring the songs of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens, George Jones, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette and many more Country Gems.

The show is hosted by The Riverdale Kid with two female artists covering Dolly, Tammy, Patsy and Loretta and local legend, Jim Yorfido as Johnny Cash.

POOLSAAR, Loha “Lou” - Sadly, we must announce that Lou has lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at the Welland General Hospital with his family by his side. He will be greatly missed by his wife Thelma, his daughter Carrie Ann, his son-in-law Grant and his cherished granddaughters Julia and Madelyn Sturgeon. Lou will also be greatly missed by his sister Heli Vail and her husband Dave Vail and their children Tiiu Vail (Andrew Dale) and Paul Vail (Kali Baraniski). He will be fondly remembered by his mother-in-law Helene Tetreault, his sisters-inlaw Joanne Runnalls (Dave), Nicole FitzHenry (Brian) and Carole Roy (Paul). Uncle Lou was also very special to his nieces and nephews Jonathan Runnalls, Cassie Roy, Melissa and Kyle FitzHenry. Lou loved his family, his friends from Newcomers of Pelham, his brothers from Knights of Columbus and his friends from St. Ann and St. Alexander Parishes. He was a warm, loving and social man dedicated to his family, church and community.
