Unselfish cuts BY STEPHEN DYELL
A downtown master plan covering Fenwick and Fonthill moved a step closer to acceptance Monday. A public meeting under the Ontario Planning Act allowed for comment on the plan. It will set guidelines for standards in street designs, in new building construction, in renovations to existing structures and in use of public spaces such as parks, streets and roadways. No comments from the public were received during Monday’s meeting. The town had held two open houses on May 8 in Fenwick and Fonthill to review plan. At that
time, visitors quizzed planners as well as sent emails. Planning director Terrance Glover said the downtown master plan will become part of the town’s Official Plan. The Official Plan, which the town had recently updated, awaits approval from the Ontario Municipal Board. Glover said Monday’s public meeting would keep things moving along so the downtown master plan can be used once the Official Plan is approved. The current downtown master plan is a revision of one begun in
2009. Ron Palmer, a consultant with The Planning Partners, said the plan started with Fonthill and Fenwick. Fonthill would follow a “town character” design while Fenwick would have a “village character.” The plan links the two with a heritage themed Canboro Road through Ridgeville. It includes a redesign of Pelham Peace Park with a new entrance off Church Hill. More recently, The Planning Partnership revised the downtown master plan to draw in a developing Master Plan (See Page 10)

For many people, their hair is everything. For one local 13-year-old, her hair’s a gift to others. Emma Kate Todd Jeffery, and her sisters, Tessa, Lydia and Rachel, began donating their ponytails four years ago to create wigs for those who have lost hair during cancer treatments. After realizing what a large impact one simple haircut could have on a complete strangers life, they decided to take the movement to their school. “We saw at our school that we have a lot of girls with ponytails. We always do fundraisers for cancer, so we told the principal about our idea to collect ponytails and he supported the idea to allow us to cut our hair in front of the school on June 16,” Emma Kate said. Susan, the mother of the 13-year-old, says the day will be somewhat of a “hair party”. An assembly will be on Monday with her two daughters getting their ponytails snipped off. Volunteer hairstylists will then come in and cut off the rest during booked appointments throughout the day. The hair donations will go towards Pantene Beautiful Haircuts for Cancer (See Page 3)
