for the VOICE It didn’t take long for Victoria Fair to make a name for herself. The Grade 9 student at E.L. Crossley put on a dominating performance at the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (SOSSA) track and field meet, where she captured gold and broke two meet records along the way. Fair, along with 50 other athletes from Crossley, competed at the Niagara Olympic Club on Thursday, where they finished second to Sir
Winston Churchill in team points. Standing apart from the rest, Fair captured two golds (80 metre hurdles and 4x100 metre relay), and qualified to move on in another two events. Her time of 12.24 in the hurdles set a new track record at SOSSA. “It was fun to be able to do that,” Fair says. “It’s always pretty busy preparing for the track meets, so it really makes it special.” She credits early experience in track and field with her fast start at high school. With over two years of training, she remains a calming veteran performer despite her age. Maryann Mergl, the physical edu-

cation teacher at E.L. Crossley, says the team came in prepared to make some noise. With an emphasis on coaching throughout the year for athletes, the improvements are being moved forward each track season. Tyler Grummett nearly struck gold in last years OFSAA meet, and is prepared heading towards his goal after winning in high jump and pole vault at SOSSA. “Feels amazing to be going on,” Grummett said. “Last year in Grade 9, it was just a great opportunity to head to OFSAA and compete. Pelham Supper Market has a time and place. A Thursday evening food, wine and retail market will set up in a curved driveway that joins the parking lots behind and beside the Pelham Municipal Building in Fonthill. Town council last week approved what is being called a “pilot project.” It will open June 12 and continue each Thursday from 4:30 p.m to dusk until Sept. 4.

The project will be reviewed before any renewal in 2015. Local restaurant operators’ spear headed the market to tap into more than 2,000 visitors who come to the farmers market and bandshell concerts on Thursday nights. Currently they are not going into local stores and restaurants. The Peace Park site lies between the Pelham Farmers Market and the Fonthill Bandshell concert area making all three events visible to each See Supper Market (Page 2)
