A Fathers’ Day gift from Pelham Friends

BY SARAH MURRELL VOICE Staff Have something old, shiny or both that you love to show off? The Second Annual Father’s Day Show and Shine at Pelham Evangelical Friends Church is the place for you.

The church is inviting anyone with a car, truck, bike or “anything shiny” to take part in the event.

Chuck Jansen and Ken Moss, both members of Pelham Friends and both owners of shiny things, explain members of the church were looking to hold a community event and since some members enjoyed classic cars or motorcycles, including the pastor, it became a show and shine event.

Last year’s inaugural event was a success, they say, with more than 250 people attending and more than 50 cars, trucks and bikes entered.

“One child even brought his tricycle,” says Janice Wooster.

“It was great for our first,” added Wooster.

Because of that success, the church is hosting the event again.

“Everyone had

such a great time it is guaranteed to be bigger,” said Moss.

This year’s event will be held on Fathers’ Day, Sunday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. An official welcome to dads

and celebration will be held at 10:30 a.m. and the people’s choice is given out at 2 p.m.

Organizers say anyone with a classic car, show car, truck or motorcycle is welcome to attend

and bring their vehicles for the show and shine event.

The event also features live music with four bands, including Greg Machinter Band along with church bands plus

a youth band, a bouncy castle for the kids and “lots” of food, including homemade chili and a barbecue.

The event is a community celebration free to all, including the food, and open to everyone.

“It’s our gift to the community,” says Wooster. “It’s part of our giving back.”

Moss stressed this is a family event, explaining many wives and kids don’t attend cruise nights because there isn’t anything going on other than the cars. This show and shine is geared to the family and has something for everyone to enjoy, he said.

“Bring the grandkids, bring everybody,” he said.

Intern Ian Norton says the youth of the church, will be at the event, helping out in any way they can, as well.

Pelham Centre student wins national gold A young Pelham resident not only created one of the best science projects in the country, he’s figured out a way to make Emergency Assist Robots better.

At this year’s Canada Wide Science Fair Shane Hickman, a Grade 8 student at Pelham Centre, won a Junior Gold Medal Excellence Award, a Junior Innovation Challenge Award and picked up a $4,000 entrance scholarship to Western University for his ‘plug and play’ platform for emergency assist robots.

“I designed a platform inside of existing platforms for emergency assist robots to make it a lot easier to create or adjust modules,” says Shane, explaining his platform is a multi-sensor platform designed for ease of use by emergency robot operators.

Shane explains he read an online article about the anniversary of 9/11, which discussed the

ways emergency robots are being used in greater numbers since 9/11. The article, he says, mentioned the robots have sensors that can’t be changed or adjusted without hours of work. It inspired him to create a new, multi-sensor platform.

If the sensor doesn’t read the data, either because it’s not the right sensor for the situation or because it’s damaged, it takes hours to change.

“It’s not cost or time effective,” he says, noting his platform allows for a change in sensors in just minutes, while the robot is in an emergency situations.

The award-winning robot from this year’s science fair isn’t Shane’s first.

The Fenwick resident went to a Lego robotic camp in Grade 6, then joined the club at school and was soon making his own robots.

He built a light-seeking robot last year, which

won gold at the Niagara Region fair. At the Canada Wide Science Fair that robot failed to place, says Shane, causing him to set a goal for himself to do better this year.

“It felt really good because I really wanted to do better,” says Shane. “I was relieved I accomplished my goal.”

Shane says he was hoping for bronze this year, but says it felt really good to get a gold.

In total Shane’s awards, including the $4,000 entrance scholarship, have a value of $6,000.

At the regional level Shane won the Lincoln and Welland Regiment Award, the United States Army Certificate, the Consulting Engineering of Ontario Award and was the Junior Division Gold medalist.

“I like programming and using computer software.

I like building things in shop,” says Shane on why robotics engineering is such a big interest for him, noting he plans to keep building robots.

Shane will attend E.L. Crossley next year and plans to study robotic engineering in university.

For now, he’s enjoying designing 3D computer games.

Local drummer transforms sounds of the farm

BY SARAH MURRELL VOICE Staff As a child Jim Casson loved the sound his hand made striking a large, empty metal tank on the family cherry farm in Fenwick.

It was a sound that stuck with him and one he vowed he would eventually record.

Eventually has arrived.

Casson’s recently released CD Dark Orchard is a unique combination of orchestration, conversation, ambient grooves and those farm sounds from his childhood.

Casson explains the instrumental CD is an idea that has been running around in his head for years. “I always wanted to experiment with different styles of music,� he says. “The idea took shape over the last year or two.�

Realizing that at some point if he hadn’t pursued the idea it would never happen, Casson chose to produce the Dark Orchard CD. Casson, who grew up in Fenwick and returned to the family farm several years ago, has been a professional drummer for the last 28 years. He has played on more than 50 CDs and performed across North America and Europe with such acts as Downchild Blues Band, Rita Chiarelli, Dave Rave,

The Official Blues Brothers Revival, Amy Sky, Sue Foley, Bill King’s Rockit 88 and hundreds more. He is a two time nominee for drummer of the year at the Maple Blues Awards, has had work nominated for Juno and Genie awards and winner of the Jazz Report Blues Band of the Year Award and Maple Blues Recording of the Year while with Downchild.

Despite his professional life as an award-winning percussionist, Casson says Dark Orchard is not a drum CD. “It is more of a composer CD,� he says, noting he even had to tell local producer Mark Lalama to tone down the sounds of the drums when they were mixing the CD. “I wanted to make something unique and different,� he says.

Technology has finally caught up with Casson’s childhood dream of recording the sound of empty cherry tanks, to the point that he needn’t bring a forklift to the studio, he says, so he’s been able to record the sounds from the farm he loves. “I’d have an idea, and run off to the barn,� he says, noting the CD has been described as something he has forged, not written.

Along with the sounds from the family cherry farm, Casson has included spoken word, cutting snips, words and phrases from interviews he recorded with friends and

people he has met.

As a result, Dark Orchard is an instrumental CD with an ongoing dialogue, some of it in languages other than English, which allows each listener to take something different from the music.

Casson, who took up drums when he was allowed to stop playing piano at the age of six, explains this project was a result of listening to his “muse�. “That’s important,� he says of listening to that power, or goddess, which inspires an artist. “It can be stifled if you don’t allow it to come out.�

Casson credits his mother, the late artist Marilyn Casson, for teaching him to listen to his muse and supporting his artistic endeavours.

VIEWpoints Remembering The Emerald Township in 1896 Hello: Dolly is back again and eager to tell you more about Pelham 100 years ago.

One day when Dolly was a little girl she listened to some grown up neighbours talking. She noticed they referred to a place called The Emerald Township. She asked about it and was told that the correct name was Pelham Township. Why? They laughingly explained that to the west of Pelham was the hard clay land of the Township of Gainsborough, to the south the vast marsh famous for its wild blueberries and rattle snakes and to the east and north was industry. But set in the midst of these was a green jewel--- a place of good soil, prosperous farms of rolling land and beautiful hills and dales.

It was the Township of Pelham and in Pelham there were villages--- Fenwick, Ridgeville, Fonthill. Fenwick was Dolly’s address from 1911 until 1968 at which time she moved to Fonthill, one of Pelham’s villages.

named Tall Evergreens for all the evergreen trees which were planted around 1866-67 was two miles southeast of Fenwick on what is now known as Foss Road.

It was here that Dolly’s memories started and ran through many years to follow. It has been a very interesting journey and it no doubt could be said that any person who has lived through this era has witnessed more changes than in any other era in history. This includes two world wars, the Great Depression, saying good bye to the horse and buggy and hello to automobiles, the advent of space travel, computers, severe inflation, and the demise of the family farms.

But what was Dolly holding in her hand as she talked? An old letter! It was dated 1896 and written by a man named A.N. Moyer, to his brother Samuel. The paper has yellowed and the words hard to read in places but it conveys how great was their love for their old home in Pelham. The brothers grew up presumably on

a farm but the exact spot is not known. They never forgot their experiences.

Although they eventually separated and moved far away, these brothers could still remember and almost bring back to reality their childhood in Pelham. It is not hard for the reader when he arrives at the story about the Lonesome Indian, to visualize that Indian standing on the highest spot in Ontario up near Lookout Golf Course, with his hand shading his eyes and peering intently at Lake Ontario to the north, then turn around and see Lake Erie to the south. As one reads the letter written by Moyer one can almost feel the bright rays of memory that must have surrounded the writer as he put his memories on paper. His love for Pelham Township stands out in every line.

More than a century later this letter gives readers a sense of delight to be able to read the description of Pelham as it was more than a hundred years ago . One tends to read a portion of the letter, then stop and try to visualize

Pelham as it is described.

And, always they compare Pelham then with Pelham now.

Which Pelham would you choose to live in now?

A part of the letter reads as follows: “Dear brother Samuel: How many times whether awake or asleep I dream of looking upon and revisiting pleasant nooks and quiet corners that sunny South Pelham—the native home of chestnut and pine and the adopted home of apple, pear, peach, cherry etc— habitat of most luscious, substantial and the most beautiful fruits of the world. How distressing, yet how necessary, for those pine forests to have been cut down in the 50s, to have been converted by Jacob Crow’s voracious saw mill into plain lumber.

Anything but poetry was there in our tasks, when, in our logging bees, we rolled the rejected, half burned logs into heaps and then without machinery dug and pried out those everlasting stumps of oak, pine and chestnut. What a waste of

stately chestnut trees we used to build zigzag rail fences. Oh, those grand, glorious old trees! But there were too many and we were obliged to make room for ourselves. Then the clearings, after being fire swept, how blackened and changed—the wild flowers, the birds, the brooklets, the mosses, the ferns, squirrels and other game, even the homesick Indian who returned every summer— all suffered loss and were almost annihilated. True, the clover meadow, the golden wheat field and blooming orchard, were also gloriously beautiful.

How lovingly the forest protected field and orchard from wind and storm.

I often wonder if the Pelham Ridge has become entirely denuded of native trees. Some seventy or eighty years ago you remember—rather you know—a hurricane or tornado swept a clean swath across the Ridge which, when we used to gather nuts and berries there, had been a restored forest. Were I to return, as

Dorothy Rungeling I some day hope to do, I wonder whether the orchards and comfortable homes would compensate for the spoiling of one of Nature’s loveliest parks.”

Reading the above letter makes one eager to learn more about Pelham even before 1896. More than a century has passed since the letter was composed and Pelham still lives and the villages within it still live. A lot of residents have come and gone but Pelham still shines brightly. And it has a history to tell of its inhabitants—history of some interesting, heart breaking or happy occasions and people-- written from memories or memorabilia kept over the years.

Pelham changing throughout the years

You may recall that my last column was about the demographics of Pelham – that is, the study of human population for our Town.

You see, Statistics Canada recently released new information from the 2011 Census. And, since they also provide information for communities from the 2006, 2001 and 1996 Census, one can compare the make-up and growth of our population over a 15-year period.

As you may know, Pelham is the fastest growing municipality in the Region. Since our formation in 1970, we have grown from 9,855 to 16,598 in 2011. That’s a 68.4% increase! The next largest increases are West Lincoln at 68.1%,

Grimsby at 67%, Lincoln at 65%; the entire Region’s population grew by only 28% during that period.

During the last 15 years, Pelham’s population grew from 14,345 in 1996, to 15,275 in 2001, to 16,155 in 2006, and to 16,598 in 2011.

But, the story becomes more interesting when one looks at age groups.

For example, our Town’s population of children (aged 14 and younger) declined in raw numbers over the last 15 years – from 2,920 in 1996 to 2,535 in 2011. This was a 13% decrease! It’s no surprise, therefore, that the proportion of children to the total population also dropped 5% from 20% of our Town in 1996 to 15% in 2011. According to a 2008 Regional report, the proportion of children across the Region is expected to decline from

16.4% in 2006 to 14.3% in 2031.

What about our seniors – those aged 65 and older? In 1996 there were 1,925 seniors in Pelham; in 2011 Statistics Canada counted 3,450. That’s a 79% increase! Seniors now make up 21% of our population, up from 13% in 1996. Across the Region, the proportion of seniors is expected to increase from 17% in 2006 to 27% in 2031.

Statistics Canada provides some very broad categories for comparison over the last decadeand-a-half. For example, Pelham’s population aged zero to 24 declined 4% from 4,820 in 1996 to 4,635 in 2011. Our population aged 25 to 54 (the “working-age” population) declined more than 6% from 6,095 in 1996 to 5,715 in 2011.

So, broadly speaking,

where was the majority of our growth concentrated?

Those 55-and-older grew a phenomenal 82% from 3,400 in 1996 to 6,255 in 2011! (It is important to note that any demographic changes result from both new residents moving here, others moving away,

Canada Day events for kids Besides sponsoring the Most Patriotic contest (more on that later), the Rotary Club has secured a number of jump and bounce inflatable challenges from Niagara Inflatables, including some brand new ones.

The Rotary Club of Fonthill will once again fill the bill for free family entertainment this Canada Day. As part of the celebrations taking place in Harold Black Park on July 1, the local service club will once again present a whole host of activities to keep the young and the young at heart amused.

Story bouncer this year as well, featuring all your favourite characters in a large mural and on the expansive playroom floor.

Among the other new attractions for this year is a penguin fish fling game, which features a five-footwide frame with two open holes for baskets. Players use a spring-loaded fishflinger to get the penguins in the baskets.

Experience the classic down-a-clown fun of the monster head carnival game. Monsters stare with goofy smiles as you try to knock them down, of guide the metal loop over the twisted wire without

touching the wire in the shockwave carnival game.

If you touch the metal loop, a bell will ring; make it all the way to the bottom without ringing the bell to win.

Back once again as a children’s favourite will be spin art, made using a few bottles of paint, cards and a fun spinner. Even the older crowd will get into the vibe of this tie-dye art, which allows everyone to bring home a souvenir of the day.

Invite the world into your home this year The Homestay program, which works with different school boards to bring international students to Canada to learn English or attend high school, offers families the opportunity to invite the world into their homes.

Marina Wilson, whose company Hospitalite Canada runs the Homestay program, says students come to learn English as a second language or simply expand on their high school education. Their stays, she said, can be as short as two weeks or as long as a school year.

To facilitate the program, Wilson finds host families to house the students while they’re here.

Host families can be anywhere in Niagara, says Wilson, noting the students will attend school nearest their host family.

In September a group of students will be coming to Niagara for a four week stay. The high school students will be attending Notre Dame in Welland, so families in this area would easily be able to participate in the program.

Host families, said Wilson, basically become

a parent, since most of the students who come are between the ages of 10 and 16.

“They provide meals, ensure the student gets on bus or gets to school, provides their own bedroom, does laundry,” said Wilson.

The students are in school all day throughout the week and take part in full day trips on Saturdays so they are busy outside of the host family for a large part of their stay.

Sundays, when nothing is organized through the program, Wilson says they like the families to do something, whether it’s on their own as a family or in conjunction with another host family, because the students are sociable and like to get out.

“It’s been a blast,” says Fonthill resident Tracy Tallman on her experience with Homestay.

Tallman talks about her conversation with a Chinese student and fully understanding the Chinese have a completely different cultural background and thought process.

“It was fascinating,”

she said. “It adds a new dimension.”

Whether it is a student from China, Columbia or Korea, Tallman says talking with and learning from the students has been a huge benefit to her.

“My world is larger and better as a result.”

Tallman says because of the kids’ ages she doesn’t expect to create lifelong relationships with the kids who stay in her home, but she does keep in touch with them for a short while once they’ve returned home.

“It’s neat,” she says, noting she became like extended family when the kids email or facebook to let her know how things are going.

“I’m like Aunt Tracy.”

“That’s the whole point,” says Wilson. “You open your home to them, show them love and set them free.”

Tracy points out you don’t need to have younger children at home to be a host family, noting her kids are grown and have moved out of the house.

“It’s nice to have a month of noise,” she laughs, adding retirees,

Tallman says she’s made friends with other host families she wouldn’t have made otherwise and has really enjoyed the experience.

“There’s a lot of collateral good,” says Tallman. “There are so many soft edges and grey areas” you can’t pinpoint specific benefits.

“There’s a ton of really nifty things working on the outside of it.”

The Homestay program is currently looking for families in Niagara, including the Pelham area, to host a group of Columbian students arriving in September.

The stay is for four weeks, from Sept. 24 to Oct. 20.

Wilson says host familes are not left on their own.

She works as a liaison between the students, their chaperones and the families to ensure everyone is happy and there are no problems.

When there are, she says, they are usually small things that are easily worked out.

Tallman agrees, noting the students don’t come across the world to not work hard at their school or enjoy themselves so big problems are few and far between.

She adds their parents are supportive of the program and, through technology, help keep their teens focused on their program.

Host families simply need to fill out an application form, meet at their home with Wilson and provide references and a police clearance.

“Behind every stranger’s face is a potential friend,” says Tallman. “It’s a worthwhile thing to do, even if you only do it once.”

Taking a hero holiday

Pictures online of young people playing soccer in third world countries with almost anything but a proper soccer ball has inspired one local young man to not only go on a mission trip, but go above and beyond what that mission requires of him.

Dalton Steele could be found during the Pelham Soccer Club’s Soccer Festival asking for donations to buy soccer balls.

“I thought this was a good event to raise money for soccer balls,” said Steele, surrounded by soccer players in full uniform, cleats, regulation soccer balls, and enjoying a tournament atmosphere.

The young people he is hoping to help don’t have any of those things, with Steele explaining in researching his upcoming mission trip he saw photos of children in the Dominican playing soccer and they don’t have a proper ball.

Steele is taking a “Hero Holiday” to build a school or home in the Dominican Republic this fall, through Live Different.

“I’ve wanted to do a trip like this for two years now,” says Steele on why he’s going to the Dominican Republic, explaining the team he is travelling with will build either a school or a home for Haitian refugees.

To go on the trip Steele is required to raise $1,800, which does not include the cost of his airfare.

Throughout the summer Steele will be fundriasing to reach the minimum $1,800.

Saying goodbye, for good, to Coffee House This last Friday evening was a time of tears, hugs, handshakes, and lots of live music. It was the final Fonthill Coffee House, held at Pelham Old Town Hall.

After 18 years of shared music, the Coffee House gatherings will close forever. The main reason is that the group has not found anyone willing to take over responsibilities to run things. These evenings are opportunities for singers, guitar players and musicians of every “coffee house” style to perform for an appreciative audience.

Pizza, home baked cakes, and non alcoholic drinks are sold and all profits go to charity.

Every leader in this group wears more than one hat.

VP Graeme Box is also sound technician and guitar player. VP Ann Stephenson

also supervises the kitchen. Jim Stephenson, president and Ed Bertoli secretary treasurer are also performers. Stephenson, after many years of faithful service, has hoped someone would step in.

These Coffee House events are more than a show. They might even be called a mutual ministry because they are very good for all concerned!

The audience includes many for whom this evening affords a chance to get out and spend an evening with friendly people. (Audience members come in all ages.)

The performers get a good reason to practice and a needed venue to perform.

The various charities receive valuable funds.

Everybody wins and even those who attended for the first time at this final Coffee House night talked about

how unique and important it is for the community.

On Saturday, two cheques were presented, each for $1000; one to Charmaine Grace for the Canadian Cancer Society and the other to Sue Kicul for Pelham Cares.

The Coffee House, started by the Kinsmen Club, first met at Davis Hall, moved to the Fonthill United Church basement, and finally to

Pelham Old Town Hall in Ridgeville.

The wisdom of the evening was that “to everything there is a season” and the Coffee House’s time had come. Yet, at the same time, there was no sign that either performers or audience members were tired or wanting to move on. It was the opposite. There were even young new performers

eagerly thanking for the opportunity to perform.

And, there was plenty of applause and lots of laughter.

Jim Stephenson took his place on stage toward the end of the evening. (It was almost midnight!) His song Superman had the words “I Am Only a Man.”

It seems he has been “More Than a Man” in leading this group for over 10 years. Who knows?

Maybe someone will step up to the plate, so this winning situation can start up again in the Fall and continue for many happy years to come!

Members of the Pelham Historical ventured on “The Trail of the Black Walnut” guided by George Huber.

The vintage, out of print book written by George Elmore Reaman in 1957 describes vividly and accurately the littleknown PennsylvaniaGerman connection in the founding of Upper Canada.

Huber is a former local history educator, passionate history student and history/traveler guide as a member of Tuxedo Tours. He guided the members on the Trail of

the Black Walnut with an interesting, informative and memorable presentation of the beginnings of the “Plain Folk” (i.e. Mennonites, Dunkards, Moravians, Amish and Hutterites) who migrated to Canada in successive waves to live together in religious and cultural groups settling in five main areas: Niagara (1776), Essex (1780), Eastern Ontario (1784), York County (1793) and Waterloo (1800).

Many of us know something about the Mennonites who live in communities

geographically close to our town. We are aware that the Old Order Mennonites reject much of the modern world.

Many of them still use horse-drawn equipment on their farmlands. Many of them wear plain, similar clothing that has changed very little over the last hundred years. Many of them strive to live very peacefully with a sense of humility, kindness, godliness and a strong work ethic in a friendly, respectful and familycentered community. We all admire their excellent foods, crafts and quilts.

We respect their pacifism and separateness and their sacrifices to preserve their way of life.

A slide show of authentic photos provided a snapshot of their daily life highlighting the tools, transportation, barns, inventions and

magnificent solidly built furniture and artistically beautiful and functional quilts.

Huber and his wife Lorna organize a history club for seniors which involves a thorough study of the history of a specific period and place and then totally

arrange and accompany the members on the follow-up trip.

Members of the community are invited to join the Pelham Historical Society in the Fall by purchasing a membership for $5 or to attend any of the meetings of interest.

Niagara Basketball Association awards night On Wednesday, May 9, 2012 the Niagara Basketball Association held its Annual Awards Presentation Night and Stag at the Old Pelham Town Hall in Fenwick.

Awards were handed out for championship teams, annual scoring leaders and for career milestones.

The 2011-2012 season saw Boner 44 win the A Division Championship for the third season in a row after copping the B Division Championship in 2008-2009. Boner 44’s Mike Hurley won the A Division Scoring crown with a 34.25 point per game scoring average.

Hurley also had the most points in a single game (57) and the most 3-pointers scored in the season (59).

Handlebar Hank’s won the B Division Championship this season after winning the D Division Championship in 2010-2011 and moving up two divisions.

Chris Stranges from Sun Life Financial won the B Division Scoring Championship with a 26.50 points per game average.

In the C Division, this year a combination of over-35 teams and “young” teams, the championships was won by an over-35 team, Handlebar Hank’s

P.O.I.T.S. The P.O.I.T.S. dropped their first two games of the season, but rallied to win their last 14 games in a row to win the championship. P.O.I.T.S.’ Steve Michalko, who has now scored 1,601 points in only 89 career NBA games, won the C Division Scoring Championship with an average of 21.38 points per game.

Bob Cupola of the Funky Monkeys, who has now played 418 NBA games over a 35 year span finished the season with 5,043 points to enter the “5,000 Point Club”. Only the sixth player to ever score 5,000 points, Bob is also the league’s all-time career foul leader with 881 fouls. He is one of only three players to have scored 5,000 points and committed 500 personal fouls.

John Geremia of the Elbow Room and Bryan Leibfried of Old School both joined the “2,500 Point Club” this season.

In almost identical fashion, Geremia has now scored 2,596 points in 166 career NBA games while Leibfried has now scored 2,557 points in 162 games. Even their career fouls are close with Geremia committing 201 career fouls to Leibfried’s 220.

New additions to the

“1,000 Point Club” for 2011-2012 are Chris Duchesne (A1 Flooring) with 1,106 points, Matt Coccagna (Handlebar Hank’s) with 1,029 points, Kevin Beauchamp (Peak Performance Old Guns) with 1,015 points and Vern Martens (Millennium Computers) with 1,007 points.

The John Doornekamp Memorial Award which is named for long-time NBA player John Doornekamp who scored 3,938 points in only 151 games in 15 seasons, is awarded to the player who scores the most points in a single game in the Over-35 Division.

This year’s winner was Jason Bray of the Funky Monkeys who scored 37 points in a November 23, 2011 85-73 win against Durward, Jones, Barkwell & Company.

Last season’s “1,000 Point Club” inductees were also honoured at this year’s awards night. U11 girls tie one, lose one The Pelham U11 Book Depot Panthers girls team travelled to St. Catharines tonight to play the Jets and came away with a 1 -1 tie. By virtue of the tie the Panthers remained undefeated in league play. The Panthers held a decided edge in the play but fell into their old habit of not taking shots on the opponents keeper. Pelham took the lead in the first half when Hailey Kleiboer scored her first of the year as she converted a pass from Terin Hultink. The Jets replied about 5 minutes later on a defensive breakdown by the Panthers. Pelham keeper Rachel Wayda couldn’t snag the ball due to the potholes in the field and the game was tied.

The Panthers continued to dominate play in the second half keeping the Jets hemmed in for most of the half but again couldn’t find the back of the net.

Catharine Konkle, Gwen Gibson, Kate Knafelc, Bethany Nicholls, Terin Hultink

and Leanne DeKorte among others had several chances but couldn’t capitalize.

The Pelham defensive corps of Emma Leavens, Teja Chmay, Hannah Nicholls, Katrina Belcastro and Jessica Konkle shut down all Jets threats. Midfielders Marlize VanSittert, Gibson, Hannah Kraliz, Kleiboer and Taylor Pattison controlled Pelham’s midfield.

Due to the tie, the team did not go for ice cream after the game.

With some questionable officiating in the following game the Pelham Book Depot u11 girls lost their first game of the season to a team from Welland. The officiating in the game had a marked impact on the Panthers and neither the coach nor the parents were impressed.

The girls were roughed up all over the field, but were called if they retaliated.

Pelham gave up two goals in each half of the game including a penalty kick.

This week in Pelham Minor Baseball action The Mosquito Studio 20 Pythons met the Welland Angels on June 4th. The early innings saw some big hits, including doubles

by Callan Saldutto and Ayden Janas, but few runs were scored by either team. The top of the third inning saw the Pythons douse the Angels’ offense with back-to-back catches of fly balls by outfielders Josh D’Onofrio (his 2nd out of the game!) and Evan Kernaghan. The bats got to work in the bottom of the 3rd with a leadoff single from Andrew

Avolio, and highlighted by Janas’ second double of the game. By the end of the inning, 5 runners had come home to give the Pythons a clear lead.

The Angels mounted a comeback in the 5th inning, but the Pythons responded.

With the bases loaded, Ayden Janas sent the ball deep into the outfield and rounded the bases for the grand slam.

A quick play by pitcher, Mathew Martel, brought the top of the 6th inning to a close, and, with Sarah Saldutto sprinting around

the bases, a double by Sammy Ugulini and single from Devin Stukel brought in the final runs in the Pythons 14-8 victory.

The Rookie Ball Giant Tiger Steelers had strong offensive efforts throughout the entire lineup on June 5th. Leading the way with 3 hits each were Carson Crysler and Drew McArthur, while Owen Dobbie, Jack Hughes, Ethan Engel, Brock Morden, Curtis Crysler and Jenna Dobbie helped out with two hits apiece.

On June 6th, Giant Tiger struck early with 5 runs in the first inning and cruised to a rain shortened 9 – 2 victory.

Ethan Engel led the team with 3 hits. Chipping in with two hits apiece were Brock Morden, Jenna Dobbie, Jack Hughes, Drew McArthur, Owen Dobbie, Carson Crysler, and Curtis Crysler.

More than 600 young swimmers from 25 teams descended upon the Brock University pool this past weekend for the annual Western Ontario Swimming Championships.

The competition was fast and fierce as many of the athletes in attendance were vying for the opportunity to go on to race at the Ontario Junior Provincial Championships in Ottawa at the end of the month.

Brock Niagara Aquatics was the host club for the three-day event and contributed 32 swimmers to the overall roster.

Fonthill’s Andrew Hrycusko, an E. L. Crossley Secondary School student, won gold in the boys 15-year-old 200 metre breaststroke and silver in the 400 metre individual medley;

he was also a member of the silver medal-winning 15/over boys medley relay team.

Andrew has had a very successful season this past year; he is one of only a few athletes to meet the arduous Ontario Junior Provincial Championships standard.

“He comes to practice and really works hard,” Andrew’s coach Peter Bradstreet said. All that hard work, coupled with a recent growth spurt, has finally paid off for Andrew.

The top-scoring Brock Niagara athlete was St. Catharines swimmer Michael Taylor, a grade nine student from Governor Simcoe High School. He captured gold medals in both the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke events in the boys 14-year-old category

and added a bronze in the 100 meter butterfly to earn him 33 points.

He was also a member of the boys 13/14 silver medal-winning 200 metre medley and freestyle relay teams.

Ming Scott, an eighth grade student at Lakeview School in Grimsby, won double-gold in the boys 14-year-old 100 and 200 metre butterfly events and was also a member of the same two silver medal relays.

Eleven-year-old Bohr Deng, a grade six student at John Marshall Public School in Niagara Falls, grabbed a silver medal in the 50 metre Freestyle and placed in the top-8 in each of his eight other events which combined earned him a total of 33 points.

also from John Marshall school—walked away with Gold in the 400 m Individual Medley, a silver in the 200 m Breaststroke and 29 points.

Also contributing to the team’s medal count were St. Catharines swimmers Michael Kreuk (age 16, gold 50 Free) and Alexander Martynek (age 16, Bronze 800 Free); and Niagara Falls swimmers Simone Waller (age 15, Bronze 200 Breast) and Kai Balogh (age 13, Bronze 800 Free).

Altogether, the Brock Niagara team scored 290 points; good enough for an overall ninth place finish among the 25 teams in attendance.

Curtis Crysler was the star of the game for Pelham, driving in a run with a single in the 1st and delivering a long triple in the 4th, which scored 3 more runs. Crysler was also solid at third base, making 4 tough defensive plays. Ethan Wells led Pelham with 3 hits while Owen Dobbie, William Baltrusinunas, Alex Rubino, Wyatt Gibson and Drew McArthur all chipped in with 2 runs each.

The Mosquito Rep team, sponsored by Mossimo’s, defeated the St. Catharines Majors club on June 4th by a score of 14-4. Max Blanchard had 3 hits and 5 stolen bases, and Alex Blanchard went 2 for 2, with 4 steals.

Mitchell Carmichael also had 2 hits and 4 stolen bases. Max pitched 2 scoreless innings, and Alex pitched 3 innings with 4 strikeouts.

Zoning bylaw amendment decision reversed

BY SARAH MURRELL VOICE Staff At the May 22 council meeting a tie vote resulted in the denial of a zoning bylaw amendment that would allow a local farmer to repair farm equipment on his land.

On June 4 that decision was reversed after Councillor Gary Accursi made a motion to return to the original recommendation in staff’s report - to allow the re-zoning.

Accursi pointed out the report notes the re-

zoning request complies with all of the town’s policies and plans and he believes, with site plan controls the staff are recommending, the rezoning is not an issue.

The councillor also spoke to the concerns expressed by his colleagues on enforcement of the rezoning should the property owners violate the terms of the bylaw.

“All bylaws fall into the same situation,” he argued, adding the town has enforcement officers on staff who investigate and enforce bylaws.

Without bylaw zoning

amendments and changes to the town’s zoning “we’d still be back in the days of Temperanceville,” says Accursi.

Councillor Durley quoted the town’s own mission statement, “serving and enhancing our unique blend of rural and urban lifestyles” to offer support for the amendment, noting allowing the rezoning would allow for “valueadded” growth on the farm.

If the zoning amendment is denied, said Durley, the town is blatantly ignoring the

goals the town created.

Councillor Richard Rybiak continued to debate his position from previous weeks, noting just because town staff says council can approve the change doesn’t mean they should approve it.

In response to a remark from Accursi, Rybiak also noted that if the council takes a position, regardless of whether it is a unanimous vote or not, they would defend that position at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) if the decision was appealed at the provincial level.

“Our job is to balance

the pros and cons in the best interest of the town,” said Councillor Peter Papp. “I don’t see this change in zoning to be detrimental.”

“We’re trying to do what is reasonable and fair,” he said. “I feel in all fairness it should be approved.”

Mayor Dave Augustyn also quoted town policy to make his argument, noting value-added agriculture zoning should be made only if it is “not possible” to locate them in villages and hamlets”.

He went on to say there is a new business coming to Fenwick that does

the type of work the applicant is planning.

Noting it isn’t the intention the town wants or the type of growth the town wants, Augustyn said he would be voting against.

In the original vote, which was recorded, Rybiak, Augustyn and Larry Clark voted against.

Durley, Papp and Accursi voted in favour.

Councillor Catherine King was absent.

On June 4 Clark changed his vote, and voted in favour with Durley, Papp and Accursi resulting in the zoning amendment being approved.

Cafe on Main gets go ahead to try patio The Cafe on Main may be serving out of doors this summer.

Patti Fagan, owner of the coffee shop and restaurant on Pelham Street, approached council two weeks ago asking to be allowed to operate an outdoor patio in front of her business.

Staff was asked to prepare a report for council.

That report

“baffled” one councillor because it didn’t directly deal with Fagan’s response but suggested the town begin work on a policy for outdoor patios.

“I understand where staff is coming from,” said Councillor Gary Accursi in explaining why he was baffled by the report. “We have at least one business that is chomping at the bit. Time is slipping by.”

Accursi went on to say he feared if the town spent the time it would take to create a policy the opportunity for this business would slip by and the summer season would be over.

He suggested instead that staff work with Fagan to address her specific request while at the same time proceeding with a policy.

Accursi, who has worked with downtown beautification and community improvement committees, said staff whould deal with the request in an open mind, bearing in mind the urban design guidelines.

“They’re not just words,” he said of the town’s guidelines. “It is a policy to support the development of places and spaces.”

Councillor Richard Rybiak said while he would like to see the Town of Pelham develop he also sees the need for policies and to comply with all levels of regulation.

Accursi suggested staff come up with an agreement that works in the interim for the Cafe on Main while addressing long-term issues in a policy.

“We may be able to learn something going forward,” said Accursi.

“What Gary says makes a lot of sense,” said Mayor Dave Augustyn.

Councillors voted in favour of an amended recommendation that will have staff execute an agreement with the Cafe now and develop a policy on outdoor patios for the future.

Have an interesting garden to share this year?

Gardens, whether small or large, colourful or a million shades of green, all have something wonderful to share.

“Every garden has charm,” says Edie Basaraba, member of the Communities in Bloom Committee and organizer of the annual Garden Tour.

“It doesn’t matter what

type of garden you have, little or large, colourful or no colour, country or town,” says Basaraba.

It’s a message Basaraba hopes local homeowners and gardeners will come to understand, and embrace, because it is the diversity of gardens, and the variety of sights they offer, that makes garden tours special.

“It is what garden tours are about,” she says.

“Otherwise we would see the same gardens all the time.”

Currently Basaraba is looking for new gardens to be included in the Communities in Bloom Committee’s annual tour, this year taking place July 22.

Basaraba explains the homeowner simply needs to be present on the day of the tour.

The committee provides a sitter to take tickets and provide any information necessary to garden tourists.

“Most people like to talk about their gardens,”

says Basaraba, going on to explain home owners don’t even need to do that much if they’d rather not.

She stresses this is a garden tour, not a home tour, and members of the public are never invited inside the homes on the tour. She also noted the homeowner can set limits to where the tour can go in the garden.

“Usually they just sit in the garden,” she says.

“They can do as little or as much as they want.”

Niagara College wines and beers will be featured exclusively at Pelham Summerfest 2012 events on Thursday and Friday evenings in Peace Park.

As Canada’s only fully licensed teaching brewery,

the Niagara College Teaching Brewery is an exciting showcase of the brewmaster and brewery operations management program, also at the college’s Niagara-on-theLake campus.

The new program is hands-on, allowing students to create and produce a variety of craft beers, seasonal beers and specialty beers.

As a bonus, home owners who open their gardens for the tour get a sneak peak the week before and have the opportunity to see all of the other gardens on the tour.

Basaraba is always looking for interesting gardens to include in the tour, she says, because often people who may have been interested one year are unavailable when the time comes.

The tour is also looking for volunteers to act as sitters for the tour, she

says.

Sitters simply sit in front of the homes on the tour, take tickets and provide any information necessary.

Basaraba says the committee likes to have enough volunteers so each sitter only needs to sit for half of the day.

Niagara College brings refined refreshment

Environmental day The Niagara Region’s 2012 Environment Day event will be held on Saturday, June 16, in the back parking lot of the Welland Seaway Mall, 800 Niagara St. (at Woodlawn Road), Welland from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Environment Day provides an opportunity for Niagara residents to drop off unwanted items that can be recycled or re-used. This year, the Region is partnering with the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Hope Centre in an effort to reduce waste and help those in need. At this Environment Day event, residents can drop off (free of charge) the following items: •Household hazardous waste (paints, syringes, motor oil, propane tanks, household chemicals expired medication) • Good, reusable clothing, and small household items (clothing, shoes, purses, draperies, blankets, comforters, dishes, kitchen utensils, small kitchen appliances in working condition and children’s toys) • Scrap metal (aluminum

siding, fence posts, bike frames, metal doorframes etc. Household appliances will not be accepted.)

• Electronic equipment (computers, monitors, power supplies, printers and plotters, scanners, VCR and DVD players, televisions, photocopiers and fax machines, telephones, radios, stereos and walkmans, projectors, calculators, pagers, cameras, typewriters and electronic hand/power equipment).

Note that televisions must be portable and cannot be part of a unit.

• Blue and Grey box recyclables • Used inkjet cartridges and cell phones • Used rechargeable batteries • Eyeglasses • Car/Pickup tires, off the rim, limit of four tires per vehicle - excluding tractor and truck tires Any items that are not reusable or acceptable at the Environment Day event will be turned away; there are no waste disposal facilities available at this site. Unacceptable items include: all building and renovation materials

(i.e. toilets, windows, carpeting, under padding, electrical equipment), large household appliances, and tractor and truck tires.

Donations of nonperishable food items will be collected by the Hope Centre, Welland. In exchange for donations, residents will receive paper bags for their leaf and yard waste.

While quantities last, Blue and Grey boxes will be available for $6 each, Green Bins for $20 (unwheeled), $22 (wheeled), and backyard composters will be available for $21 each.

Long line-ups may be encountered during this event. Residents’ patience is appreciated. As always, Environment Days are limited to residential use only. For safety reasons, no walk-ins will be permitted; residents attending the Environment Day must arrive in a vehicle.
