Cycling club rides in memory of David Brown
Pelham arena given five-year limit BY WAYNE CAMPBELL
for the VOICE The time had come to make some moves. With an engineering consultant confirming a limited future for the Pelham Arena, town council Monday moved toward a multi-purpose community complex. Jim Flanigan of AECOM recommended “this arena be scheduled for replacement within five years.” About $200,000 in repair work would keep it running for that time, he said. Otherwise the town would face $2.3 million in maintenance costs to extend its life to 10 or 15 years. Immediate concerns for the arena built in 1974 are: fire separation of exits, patching the roof, fire alarm system improvements, and a budget for ongoing mechanical and electrical repairs. AECOM prepared the report for consultants Leisure Plan International Inc., which is making a business case for a new multi-purpose complex. Town council Monday received the report, narrowed down a site for a complex, appointed an architectural David Brown loved to cycle. For about six years, he was a regular on rides with the Niagara Freewheeler Bicycle Touring Club. His final trip was during a club tour of the Peterborough area in October. The 70-year-old collapsed from a heart attack during the ride. “He just enjoyed cycling,” said his wife Jere Brown in Harold Black Park just before the beginning of a memorial ride by the club on June 29. “He he got me involved last year,” she said about the rides and trips they enjoyed together. The couple were married for 49 years. She joined the 38-kilometre memorial ride, called the Stayzerville route which rolled down to the Welland River to Wellandport and back Canborough Road through Boyle.
This was the first time the cycling club staged a memorial ride. “We felt it was appropriate,” said organizer Par Paolone. “Dave was well-known and well liked.” In addition to his cycling the Pelham resident was the owner of Dave’s Small Engines in Welland, a member of various choirs and an avid gardener. About two dozen cyclists joined in the Sunday morning memorial ride. Niagara Freewheeler Bicycle Touring Club holds local rides through the week as well as one day and multi-day tours in Ontario. The 23-year-old club promotes recreational and bicycling in the Niagara Region as well as educates members on legal, safety and technical cycling matters. Story and photo by Wayne Campbell
