Project Slow it Down (from Page 1) After the tragic death of a family pet, two Fenwick brothers are asking the public one simple request – slow down on their street.

Nearly two weeks ago, Conner and Sebastian McLeod were playing with their cat, Joy. The kitten was the only survivor from a litter they’d rescued after its mother had passed away and was raised from birth by the brothers. After being spooked by a passing car, the cat charged into the front yard and was struck by a speeding pickup, which did not stop.

Luckily, the two brothers did not run onto the road to catch her, but their kitten eventually passed away from its injuries once it was taken to a veterinarian clinic.

“When Joy passed, the boys were devastated,” Stef, their mother said. “They wanted to do something to help discourage speeders on the street.”

They came up with were personalized signs urging motorists to slow down.

Dubbed ‘Project Slow it Down’, the brightly painted signs remind drivers there are children who do enjoy playing outside.

“Me and my brother are just trying to stop cars from speeding down this road,” said nine-year-old Conner. “We are hoping to keep kids safe and also their pets.”

Stef says the street has always suffered from speeders. Time and time again, she sees people driving above the speed limit, putting not only her children at risk, but the other Pancake Lane families.

The boys learned early the dangers of playing on the road with numerous close calls when riding their bikes. She hopes her boys project helps open some eyes.

“It’s so disheartening what is happening. I know the problem is not only on our street. It happens everywhere in rural Pelham, but we have to start somewhere to help fix this dangerous problem.”

She says a committee had been formed and had talked to the Town about a possible solution. Painting lines on the road was an option, while others called for speed humps, much like the ones on Haist St. Stef says despite the talks, no action has been taken. She’s hoping for a better police presence in the area – or at least more signs warning drivers of children.

For now, she relies on the smart-thinking of her two young boys, who have already received positive reviews from neighbours and honking strangers passing by.

Election Update (from Page 1) In Ward 3, Coun. John Durley is the only candidate so far for two seats. He was first elected in 2003 and re-elected in 2007 and 2010.

Regional councillor Brian Baty is so far the only candidate for Pelham’s one regional councillor position. In 2010, he was acclaimed, that is, no one else ran against him.

He is also Pelham’s first regional councillor winning the seat in 2003 after Niagara regional council added it to accommodate Pelham’s growing population.

On Election Day, Oct. 27, Pelham voters will also vote for a school trustee to one of the four school systems they support with their designated taxes : French public or Catholic, or, English public or Catholic.

So far, Dale Anne Robinson has filed for the District School Board of Niagara, Rev. Paul MacNeil for the Niagara Catholic District School Board, and Derrick Fournier for the French Language Public District Baord. No one has filed for the French Language Separate District Board yet.

Pelham Clerk Nancy Bozzato and her staff have been preparing for Election day for months.

They must draw up the voters list, arrange for accessible polling stations and recruit 91 election-day staff for the stations.

For this municipal election, they had the added chore of redrawing and renumbering polls to accommodate new boundaries for the town’s three wards.

It is the first change in wards since the 1970s. The population of each ward is now closed with room made for future growth in East Fonthill.

Wards 2 and 3 now cover an area from Centre Street to the eastern boundary between Metler and Foss roads. The rest of the town including the airport, Fenwick, North Pelham and Effingham are in Ward 1.

By Sept. 1, the voters list will become available so electors can start checking it through town hall after Sept. 4.

The clerk’s staff will also set up a booth at the Pelham Farmers Market each Thursday during September so electors can check voting list information.

Advance polling for all polls will be on: Saturday, Oct. 18, at Pelham Fire Station No. 1 in Fonthill ; Monday, Oct. 20, at Pelham Fire Station No. 2 in Fenwick; and on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at the Pelham Public Library in Fonthill.

On Election Day, Monday, Oct. 27 electors will vote in their polls numbered consecutively across the town.

For Ward 1, Polls 1, 2, and 3 will be at First Presbyterian Church on Metler Road, and, for Polls 4 to 9 at Pelham Fire Station No. 2 in Fenwick.

For Ward 2, Pelham Fire Station No. 1 in Fonthill will have Polls 10 to 15, and, Pelham Public Library in Fonthill, Polls 16 to 18.

For Ward 3, Pelham Friends Church at 940 Haist St. will contain Polls 19, 23, and 27, while Glynn A. Green Public School will have Polls 20,21, 22, 24, 25 and 26.

The clerk will also set up polling stations for residents at Lookout Ridge Retirement Community, Shorthills Villa Retirement Community, and Woodlands of Sunset Home for the Aged.

While turnouts for municipal elections can be low, Bozzato says that does not affect the preparation.

The clerk’s department always plans for 100% turnout and hopes to see it.

Pirates voyage begins BY STEPHEN DYELL

for the VOICE The Pelham Pirates wasted no time getting on the ice after signing a seven-year lease with the town.

Hopeful young hockey players gathered at Ridley College for the second conditioning camp, where coaches and management get a look at fresh bodies, and also some returning veterans.

After a disappointing 2013-14 season – finishing with a record of 9-37-3 – Pirates are looking for a bit of a change. Owner and general manager Tim Toffolo says despite the previous year, they aren’t really calling the upcoming season a rebuild.

“You never really know from year-to-year. So many players move in and out of our league every season so it can be difficult,” he said. “At the end of the day, we try to put the best roster possible on the ice.”

That roster will include some familiar names and some new ones. Pirates announced late Sunday that they’d signed Pelham native Thomas Young, who played with the Southern Tier Admirals last year, to a contract for the upcoming season.

Other local players, who played in Port Colborne last

year, remain undecided about their future with the team. Forward Spencer Fox finished fourth in points for the Pirates last season, while Kitchener Rangers prospect, Ty Learn, joined the team at the trade deadline and had an immediate impact.

Toffolo remains hopeful that both will return, especially now that the team has moved to their backyard.

Even with the newest additions, nothing will be given to the Pirates in their new location. With the St. Catharines Falcons and Caledonia Corvairs still in the Golden Horseshoe Conference, reaching the top may be a challenge.

Between both teams, they recorded an 88-8-2 record last year, with the Corvairs going on to win the Sutherland Cup. Toffolo, however, likes his team’s chances.

“In the 12 years I’ve been involved, we’ve found a way to get to the top and compete against those teams – so it’s no different here in Pelham.”

Deadline approaches for pretty property awards Pelham Communities in Bloom committee is looking for nominations by Aug. 7 of places that make the town look better.

The annual awards recognize and thank residents and businesses who add beauty to Pelham.

The Trillium, Ontario’s provincial flower, grows naturally in Pelham.

“We use it to emphasize the fact that this award is for the people of our town,” the committee says in a news release.

During July, front yards of entrants are viewed “to find properties that are neat, have exuberant flower beds, display different plant materials, innovative design or are part of an attractive streetscape.”

The committee encourages nominations from the public of properties “that bring delight delight to view.”

Judging will start by Aug. 18, so nominations should be made through town hall by Aug. 7. Entry forms are on the town’s website at www.pelham.ca.

There are nine categories for nominations: Residential Small Frontage; Residential Large Frontage; Residential Small – Professionally Landscaped within the last 5 years; Residential Large – Professionally Landscaped within the last 5 years; Commercial Property; Multiple Residential; Best Individual Balcony; Schools, Churches, Institutions; and Most Improved, Residential or Commercial, which should include a “before” photo.

The award winners are usually announced in August with presentation of awards at a reception on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Pelham Public Library.

The town committee also holds an annual garden tour in the summer and participation clean up days in the summer and fall to encourage beautification and good maintenance in the town.

James Lane seeks Ward 1 seat in upcoming election

Councillor James Lane has put his commitment to work on behalf of Pelham residents in writing.

On Friday, he filed his nomination papers to run in the Oct. 27 municipal election for a councillor in Ward 1.

Now he will go door-to-door in the largely rural ward to talk to residents.

“There is a lot of driving involved,” he said of the ward that wraps around Fonthill. Wards 2 and 3 cover Fonthill and Ridgeville east from Centre Street between Metler and Foss roads.

Lane has a distinction of being appointed twice to finish terms of Ward 1 councillors who resigned.

He first ran for town council in 2006 finishing third in the two-seat race.

However in 2009, council appointed him when Malcolm Allen resigned after his election as Member of Parliament for Welland.

Similarly, for the current term, town council appointed Lane after Larry Clark stepped down to move out of the community. Lane had finished third in Ward 1 in the 2010 election.

Lane said he has developed good working relationships with other councillors and town staff since his appointment.

The retired manager said he brings a lot to the table including experience, time and a true desire to make a difference.

He has been at almost every council meeting since 2006 -- even when he wasn’t serving as a councillor.

“I love Pelham,” he said about his reason for running.

Lane has been a resident of Pelham since his family moved here when he was a teenager.

“Quite frankly I love politics: the challenge of it.”

A self-described as fiscal conservative, Lane brings the concept of spending within your means to the decisions of council.

He is all for progress, he said, as long as it doesn’t come at too high of a cost.

“We’re doing a lot to attract young people to the community, but on the other hand you can’t take that away

by raising taxes through the roof. You have to find balance.”

He said he will use that approach to work for the community, to do what is right and to move Pelham forward.

Lane hopes to see several projects move ahead over the next term of council.

A Fenwick downtown beautification project is expected to be done by the fall. The development of East Fonthill will continue during the next four years.

Council will have to decide how to fulfill a promise to continue library service in Fenwick.

And if funding becomes available from upper levels of government, a community recreational complex may be built.

Lane said Pelham cannot afford to go it alone on such a major project. It will require federal and provincial funding.

Now that East Fonthill has its secondary plan in place, Lane said it will be time to finish a housing development plan for East Fenwick.

A rewarding aspect of his work on council, said Lane, is working with people and helping resolve issues when they call for his help.

“I feel like I’ve made an impact.”

Junior B Pirates Coming to Pelham this season During our meeting last Monday, Town Council signed a multi-year lease with the Pelham Pirates Junior B Hockey Club and officially welcomed them to the community.

After receiving the go-ahead from the Ontario Hockey Association, the Pelham Pirates (formally known as the Port Colborne Pirates) will move into the Pelham Arena for the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 seasons. The Pelham Pirates will be one of 27 Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League teams within the Niagara Region and Southwestern Ontario. Pirate home games will be on Friday nights, with the option of Tuesday night games when necessary.

Town staff met with various arena user groups and there is unanimous support for the Team’s relocation to Pelham. While it will mean that some ice users will have to shift rental times or rent more out-of-town ice, all welcomed the Pirates. For instance, Byron Sinclair, president of Pelham Minor Hockey, said during our Council meeting: “We are behind you with whatever

you need.”

Because they are part of minor hockey, the Pelham Pirates will pay the minor hockey rates for ice. (We understand that Junior B teams in other jurisdictions either pay minor hockey rates, or get their ice time for free.)

The Pirates will also operate the concession at Pirate games, during other minor hockey games, and public skates. They will rent the concession at our normal rate. This is actually a benefit for the Town; over the last couple of years, the town operated the concession at a loss because we could not find a business or notfor-profit to operate it.

Like in other cities or towns with Junior B teams, the Town will provide a dressing room for the Pirates. (Last week, Council approved the rental of a temporary trailer for the Pirate change room at a cost not to exceed $22,240.) Visiting Junior B teams will use two arena dressing rooms.

rates also contains important provisions like what happens if there’s a failure to pay, how the Pirates might transition to a community team, and the flexibility required in hope that the Town attracts the grants and financing needed to build a new potential community centre. here may not be wild animals in town, but Pelham Friends are looking to start a adventure during the Jungle Safari camp on Aug 11.

A week filled with games and crafts will also take aim at showing children the possibilities of doing good locally. “We hope to give kids some confidence and security,� camp leader Moria Poot said. “Show them the principles of life and about serving others. We want them to have a fun time too – but also showcase the needs of other people.�

The camp, for ages 5-11, will have staff from Open Arms Mission come in and explain to children what they are all about and how they help out the community at an early age. “We’re collecting school supplies and collecting donations. It’ll be kids helping kids, which is a great learning experience for the youngsters,� she said. “We want to show them there are opportunities to serve here in the community without going across the world.�

Moot says the camp will have the Vacation Bible School feel to it, but they’re aiming to dig deeper into showing them the big picture. “We are not trying to force religion down their throats. A child attending doesn’t have to have any experience within the church. We just want them to have a positive, fun experience, where they pick up on the needs inside Niagara.�

The Celtic Sound of Summer

The sound of bagpipe music can sometimes be heard in a Fonthill neighbourhood, especially in the balmy days of summer, as resident Gerry Kirk practices outdoors on his Scottish smallpipes.

Smallpipes are related to the Great Highland Bagpipes, mainly by virtue of being Scottish reed instruments with a bag. They also share the same repertoire, played on a chanter with 9 notes. That’s where the similarity ends. Smallpipes are most commonly blown by a bellows strapped under the piper’s right arm. Gerry’s pipes use the D Mixolydian scale rather than the GHP’s A scale. Also, the volume is much less than that of GHPs, making them suitable for playing indoors and in ensembles.

In the past, Kirk has piped in the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and the bishop of the diocese of St. Catharines. Other ‘gigs’ included piping out the departing pastor of St. Alexander Church, and a married couple at St. Kevin Church, Welland.

Kirk’s repertoire is constantly expanding, and there is a wealth of tunes that play well on the smallpipes, both from Scottish and Irish traditions. The current list includes airs such as “Dark Island” and “Chi Mi na Morbheanna”, wedding songs like “Mairi’s Wedding”, funeral laments like “Flowers of the Forest”, and various jigs and reels.

For special events, Kirk dons an 18th century Lowland Scottish piper’s costume that includes a long, belted ‘léine’ (shirt), a 3 metre long woollen ‘plaid’ fastened at the shoulder by a pewter Celtic brooch, and a handmade felted Scottish bonnet. The plaid was woven by a craftsperson in Alaska, and was made to Kirk’s own design. Keeping with Lowland tradition of his Kingdom of Fife ancestors, he wears trousers rather than the kilt - which is Highland attire.

Several of his grandsons have expressed interest in learning to play the smallpipes, so the Celtic sound of summer just may continue to be heard in Fonthill for years to come.

Author shares personal story in first book

for the VOICE Charles Pedley had never written a book before. After witnessing love and loss, he put pen to the paper to create Joyful Mourning.

“It’s the story of my daughter, Rebecca, who found love and lost it in a matter of months,” the Fonthill native said. “She got married and within six months, her husband was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.”

The experience unfolded before Pedley’s eyes. Vivid accounts of treatments, experimental treatments and more doctors appointments tell the story of a family learning to deal with the cards they were dealt.

Todd, Pedley’s son-in-law, thought he had weathered the storm after receiving treatment in Michigan. Feeling better, he began applying for jobs again. He got a job as a Pastor in Virginia and everything was looking up. The newlyweds moved down into the States, and were living happily in a small community.

“It was around Christmas in 1997 that Todd began

feeling ill again. When he went to the doctor, he found out that the cancer had returned.”

Todd passed away a short time later, leaving an empty void and a grieving family behind.

A few years later, Pedley thought of sharing his and his daughters story, to let others know the pain eventually goes away.

“I never kept a diary through the whole process which made me hesitant to write the story,” he said. “Then I realized that I had lived it. The experience wasn’t only hers, but also mine as I took him to appointments and experienced the same sense of loss when he passed.”

Sobeys Tournament feeds kids Hudak speaks on new budget With a stellar opening tournament, Ron Kore looks for a repeat performance. It after raised over $17,000 last year.

The second annual Niagara Sobeys Golf Tournament hits the links on Sept. 5 at Lookout Point Country Club in Fonthill, Players will get a chance to support breakfast programs in the community by enjoying sunshine on the course.

Niagara Nutrition Partners, which received $12,000 from last year’s tournament, provides nutrition programs in elementary and secondary schools, as well as for community based programs.

“It’s a good partnership for both of us to be in because people often don’t understand how many children go to school hungry,” said Kore.

According to Breakfast for Learning, a staggering 31 per cent of elementary school children do not eat a healthy breakfast before school. That number skyrockets to 62 per cent for high school students.

Despite the high-level of interest in the tournament,

with close to 200 participants in 2013, Kore plans to keep the day simple.

Saving the money for what really matters.

“We don’t give them T-shirts or any incentive to play other than having fun because spending money on the extra stuff like that takes away a breakfast that could be given to a needy student in the area.”

Lots of local sponsors have already stepped up and joined in on the cause.

Kore says he’s thankful for Dan’s Produce and two golf courses in town, which the event will rotate between each year.

“It’s not all about us. It’s about the bigger picture in helping others and every dollar raised goes directly back into the community.”

Funds will also go into the athletics program at E.L. Crossley Secondary School.

Tickets are $155 per person which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, range balls and a dinner.

Niagara West – Glanbrook residents cannot afford a budget that doubles down on debt, will increase taxes, and doesn’t support job creation said MPP Tim Hudak following Thursday’s budget vote in the Ontario Legislature.

“This community is going to face higher taxes and even more job losses because this government’s budget will see the deficit rise to $12.5 billion,” said Hudak Hudak called for a better approach that would enhance economic opportunity and increase take home pay for Ontarians through lower taxes, more affordable hydro and a government that spends within its means.

“I stood up for the Niagara West – Glanbrook men and women who know Ontario is on the wrong track and voted against the Liberals’ tax and spend budget,” said Hudak, keeping his election-night promise to continue to hold the government to account for their unrealistic and unaffordable budget.

Had the Liberals tabled a budget that grows the economy and eliminates wasteful spending, instead of increasing the deficit, there would be opportunities to focus on priorities, like West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, said Hudak.

“If we had a budget that focuses on eliminating waste and creating jobs, the Liberal government would be able to keep its promise to my constituents and hold up its end of a bargain made 10 years ago.”

Hudak also noted the budget does nothing to lower the ever-increasing costs of energy in the province and gives no relief to families struggling to pay their hydro bills.

“Putting a stop to industrial wind farms and ending the green energy act would certainly help Ontarians get some relief on their hydro bill,” said Hudak, “and help job creators add more men and women to the payroll through more affordable hydro.”

Baty: Ambulance calls on the rise in Niagara The Public Health and Social Services Committee at the region debated at length a staff report from the Emergency Medical Services that proposes to increase the number of ambulances and paramedics in Niagara.

Call volumes and call response times are constantly monitored and compared to benchmark data from around the province.

In the recent past there have been minor adjustments to the ambulance fleet and paramedics. Two took place in Port Colborne and Fort Erie with the elimination of emergency services at the local hospitals.

Another adjustment took place in Wainfleet by assigning a roving vehicle and a paramedic to quickly respond to calls in Wainfleet or be redirected to other centres if they experienced an extraordinary call volume.

Another factor affecting ambulance service has been called the “off load delay” factor. That is the time that an ambulance has to remain at a hospital until the patient is admitted. Cooperative efforts with the Niagara Health System have reduced this burden by approximately two-thirds.

The EMS report noted that there have been steadily increasing call volumes over the years that require ser-

vice enhancements.

This increase is sizeable due, in part, to our aging demographics. An earlier report on the future of longterm care facilities noted that by 2031 Niagara would see a 72% increase in the seniors population above 75 years of age.

The service increase requested by EMS was for the addition of two 24-hour ambulance crews requiring 16 new paramedics as well as two supervisors followed by a second addition of two 24-hour ambulance crews with 16 new paramedics , two operations supervisors and two logistical/ regulatory staff.

As a regional council, we have been very cautious about budget increases over the years keeping annual tax increases below the rate of inflation. Needless to say, these proposed increases are costly and required considerable debate.

The final recommendation to Regional Council was broken into stages. We did support the first addition of two new crews and supervisors for September 2014 but directed that the funding come from the Land Ambulance Severance Reserve.

We also directed staff to plan for the ongoing opera-

tional impact of this recommendation which is $1.1 million during the 2015 budget process. This effectively puts the final decision in the hands of the new Regional Council following municipal elections this October.

Council was very sensitive to the budgetary impact but also respectful of a new council’s mandate. Councillors also felt that the final implementation would benefit from the data collected starting this September with the addition of 18 staff.

There was an attempt to defer the second round of additional resources to 2016 but the final vote recommended that staff plan for the 2015 budget with the second implementation to commence in September 2015.

The new regional council may continue this plan or may request a report on the first round results before proceeding with round two or defer until a future date.

Begin by talking to friends and colleagues who share your love of books. Once you have a core of three or four interested, you can reach out. An ideal size is eight to 16 members. Recruit with social media, or with a poster in your community centre, library, or laundromat. And also, notices in the local newspaper are all good ways to find the right people.

Choosing books You could go with a theme—a specific author, country, or genre—or you could sign up to a book club network that will select the books for you. The popular

Amnesty International Book Club selects books with human rights experiences. The Amnesty book club also offers people the chance to take action on a critical human rights issue.

Meeting place A book club is a social event as well as a chance to discuss good books. Many clubs take turns meeting in each member’s place, with drinks, snacks, sometimes even meals to accompany the talk. Libraries, places of worship and community centres will often provide meeting rooms. You can pump up the socializing by meeting in a café, bar or restaurant—whatever suits your group.

Timing It’s important to pick a schedule and stick to it—the first Tuesday of the month for example, or the third Thursday. Once a month seems to work for most groups

but you can shorten or lengthen that. Most clubs meet mid-week, but it can be a breakfast, lunch or evening meeting, whatever works best. Depending on the chat, the meeting should last an hour and a half or more.

Keeping in touch Send out meeting reminders via email, Facebook or Twitter. You might want to set up a group on social media or a blog. Keep a record of your group, noting the books you’ve read and special events. It can help bring new members up to speed.

Name Create an identity for your club. The Awesome Authors Club? The Beyond Words Book Club? You choose how serious you want to be.

Fresh Air and baseball After arriving in the South Niagara area earlier this month, a group of Fresh Air Fund children from New York City attended a morning of camp at Bullettproof Baseball Academy on Tuesday, sponsored by Scott Bullett, a former Chicago Cubs MLB player.

Bullett generously donated a camp session at Bullettproof Baseball Academy to The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program last summer as well. This camp gives Fresh Air children and children from host families baseball instruction and personal training from staff, volunteers, and Bullett himself.

During the two-hour session, the children practiced pitching, fielding, catching and batting in the batting cages, and also had time for free play, basketball and soccer fun.

This summer, over 4,000 children will enjoy a summer outside of the city with volunteer host families in suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and locally too, with kids spending time in Fenwick through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program.

The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877.

TREITZ, Gladys Joyce Welcomed home to be with the Lord, July 28, 2014 in her 96th year. Loving mother to Bev Domm (Keith), Marty Treitz, and Paul Treitz (Barb). She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren Jennie, Cindy, Laura, Ashley, Josh and Kristin as well as her six great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Ervin, sisters Irene and Vera, and brother Harold. Thank you to her nieces Shirley Crowe (Carson) and Janice Erion for their frequent visits and constant devotion. Gladys was a long time resident of Pelham volunteering at Woodlands of Sunset, Pelham Cares, and the Pelham Horticultural Society.

She was a dedicated member of Pelham Community Church serving faithfully through the years.

Visitation will take place at the

Pelham Community Church (461 Canboro Rd, Pelham, ON) Friday, August 1st from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

The memorial service will be held at the church on Saturday, August 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at the Pelham Community Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Pelham Community Church building fund would be greatly appreciated.

NHS looking for volunteers Niagara Health System has openings for volunteers in our Emergency Departments at the Welland, Niagara Falls and St. Catharines sites.

“Volunteering at the hospital offers a rewarding experience and meaningful work for community members who want to get involved and have a real impact creating a positive experience for our patients,” says Debbie Anderson, Co-ordinator, Volunteer Services for the NHS. We know a trip to the Emergency Department can be difficult. The aim of the program, which was launched two years ago, is to create a great experience for our patients and their loved ones and increase patient satisfaction with our services.

“Volunteers assist in the waiting room by answering questions, addressing concerns and being a liaison with staff. They also care for patients at the bedside by offering a variety of comfort measures and support,” Anderson adds.

NHS is looking for people with a variety of skills, including good communication and problem-solving skills, along with a kind nature to support patients, families and staff in the Emergency Department as part of our focus on patient-centred care.

The team of ED volunteers is made up of a variety of individuals with diverse backgrounds; those who are working or retired (some from healthcare) as well as students in post-secondary programs preparing for careers in the field. Volunteers at the NHS are a satisfied group. In a recent survey, 98% said they would recommend volunteering at the NHS to their family and friends.

Brock University graduate Rob Smith, who has done a tremendous amount of work as team lead for the Emergency Department Volunteer Program, said of his experience: “I love volunteering in the ED because it’s a time to help and connect with fellow community members on a level that is difficult to achieve in our busy lives.

These interactions can make the hospital experience more comfortable, and I’m very grateful to have this opportunity. Working alongside very dedicated frontline staff, physicians, and administration has also helped me develop knowledge and skills that I can use in my future career in healthcare.”

Volunteers will begin in September and receive comprehensive training. Interested applicants have until Aug. 1 to apply through the volunteer section on the NHS website, www.niagarahealth.on.ca/en/volunteer-resources.

Molly Rogers celebrates 101st birthday

Molly Rogers takes life one day at a time.

It has carried her through 101 years.

She celebrated her birthday with family, friends and fellow residents at Short Hills Retirement Community on Sunday.

Rogers said with her beaming smile she was grateful for the gathering.

Rogers was born in England in 1913.

She came to Canada with her parents on what was then a troop ship, the RMS Olympic, in 1919. It was a sister ship of the RMS Titanic.

She lived in Port Colborne, married and raised a family.

Molly was always active in her church, St. James Anglican in Port Colborne, said her daughter Shirley Lazareth. When

she moved to Fonthill 14 years ago, she regularly attended Holy Trinity Anglican until limited in her walking.

Lazareth said her mother remains surprised by the length of her life but believes her sense of humour has something to do with it.

“She always had a great smile.”

Her birthday cake consisted of cupcakes covered with icing. It reminded Molly of her love of baking.

Her family members said she was quite a good baker making cup cakes, cookies and other items for charity sales as well as family.

The family gathering included a four generation photo of the “Rogers women”: Molly, her daughters, granddaughter and great-granddaughter.
