Images of Summerfest. Pages 6 and 7

Pelham knows how to throw a summer bash BY TINA CHIVERS VOICE Staff Residents of Pelham and the surrounding community gave the newly-constructed Pelham Street a workout. On Saturday, July 23, Pelham hosted Summerfest, a summer bash to celebrate the end of the downtown

Fonthill construction, and the improved face of the street. According to Mayor Dave Augustyn, it’s been decades since residents first began talking about the downtown, and the improvements it needed; 10 years ago, the Communities in Bloom Committee started fundraising. And two years ago, the Down-

town Beautification Committee was set up to start redesigning the downtown and making it more beautiful. Volunteers took to the streets, with a mission in mind, and a year ago, the actual construction began. After a long haul, Summerfest arrived, and at mid-day, party-goers were the first to see the brand

new clock, which was unveiled by Mayor Dave Augustyn and Communities in Bloom former president, Don Marr, and committee members, Edie Basaraba and Santa Cyopik. Augustyn told the crowd, during the opening ceremony, that he appreciates the work of many volunteers who worked

tirelessly. “They are the ones who worked hard, and they are the reason we are here,” said Augustyn. Making the vision a reality, both the federal and provincial governments gave more than $800,000. The Town of Pelham also kicked in its share. With the joint funds, the project was realized. Cel-

Party-goers celebrated late into the night. Pictured, the crowd enjoys some live entertainment while mingling in the beer corral.

ebrating along with the Town was Linda Arbuckle (representing NiagaraWest Glanbrook MP Dean Allison), and Ray Dykstra (representing NiagaraWest Glanbrook MPP Tim Hudak). Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Jim Bradley wrote a letter, congratulating the Town on Fonthill’s new downtown.
