Summerfest Pavilion secret design unveiled July 21 while crowds gathered under the pavilion to enjoy the party, Barber said he had only heard positive comments on his design. “Everybody, and I mean everybody, says it has to stay,” he said, adding he’s very happy with the outcome. After October the temporary structure built by a team of sponsors and volunteers will become two picnic pavilions in two of Pelham’s major parks, one in Fonthill at Harold Black Park and one in Fenwick at Centennial Park. BY SARAH MURRELL VOICE Staff Last Wednesday the secret was slowly revealed as a boom truck raised eight towering arches over Town Square Boulevard in anticipation of the weekend’s street party. Designed by Todd Barber of Forestgreen Creations Inc. the Summerfest Pavilion was a closely guarded secret until construction started on the structure Wednesday morning. The pavilion features four sets of arches with material strung underneath to provide shade and hanging lanterns. In describing the design of the pavilion, Barber said he always wanted to do something with Cantenary arches, the shape created by a hanging chain. Barber added he also wanted to do something that would outdo last year’s pavilion. Standing on the street as his eight Cantenary arches were lifted into place, Barber admitted he might have difficulty outdoing this year’s pavilion in 2013. The design is the result of a lengthy design process to create a unique, artistic, shaded and simple to build structure for Summerfest. Placed over Town Square Boulevard the pavilion acts as a gateway to connect Pelham Street to Town Square and Peace Park. During Summerfest it will be the wine and beer pavilion. Beyond Summerfest the pavilion will remain in place until October, says Barber, where it can be used as a pavilion during other events or on Farmers’ Market evenings. During that time Pelham

residents and politicians can decide if it is something that could become a permanent structure. Although the structure appears to be permanent, Barber explained the cement foundations holding the arches in place are aboveground and the structure, which went up in a matter of days, will come down just as easily.
