The popular ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has made its way into Pelham and it’s all for a good cause.

Tina Moessner, owner and funeral director at James L. Pedlar Funeral Home, witnessed challenges on social media and decided to participate.

“I told the other staff about the challenge and they were instantly on board with the idea of doing it in the memory of Bradley Watt,” Moessner said.

Watt was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 21. He survived another 20 years before ALS ended his life.

“He was such a brave person. He never once said ‘why me’ or complained about his situation,” she said.

“So many families we serve take a piece of us but this one really got to us.”

ALS Fundraising (From Page 1) Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord, and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body.

No cure has yet been found for ALS. However, the first drug treatment for the disease – riluzole – was created in 1995 and is believed to reduce damage to motor neurons by decreasing the release of glutamate.

“Drugs alone are astronomically priced because ALS isn’t as widespread as diseases like cancer. So the more money they can raise for it, the better chance of lowering the cost of the drugs. Or even better – finding a cure.”

Currently, the Ice Bucket Challenge has crept over $20 million raised since the social media movement began – much of which will go to research projects.

Their goal with ALS research projects are to understand the mechanisms of motor neuron death and to identify ways to keep motor neurons alive and functioning normally. Motor neurons are the cells in the brain and spinal cord which are responsible for conscious muscle contraction. These nerve cells are the primary target for degeneration in ALS. One single research project costs on average $120-140,000 per year for three to five years. This cost does not include the salary support for those carrying out the project, making donations a vital line in providing answers.

Although the life expectancy of an ALS patient averages about two to five years from the time of diagnosis, this disease is variable and many people live with quality for five years and more. More than half of all patients live more than three years after diagnosis. Something that continues to improve as research projects start to put the pieces together.

“Every dollar counts and it makes a world of difference for those battling the disease.”

Nominated for the challenge was Mayor Dave Augustyn, who took the challenge on Friday, and a funeral home in Niagara Falls. Business booming for local meat store

One of Niagara’s only naturally-raised, hormone and antibiotic-free meat stores are celebrating their anniversary in style.

Churchhill Natural Meats will be celebrating their second anniversary in Pelham by supporting Crime Stoppers of Niagara on Aug. 30. Niagara IceDogs players, mascot and cheerleaders will be on hand to serve hot dogs and greet fans.

The store, located at 3 Church Hill St., opened in 2012. The whole creation of the business was due to the lack of choices in Niagara. Co-owner Wendy Wikston lost her job in the auto industry and decided to try something fairly new to the region.

“As a person who wanted to eat only drug and hormone free meat, I found it very difficult to get anything to eat for take-out or just for meals. You could find it in the bigger cities, but nowhere in Niagara.”

With a steady flow of customers, the store has achieved just that.

“I didn’t realize at the time that so many people were like me, travelling up the highway just to get the food they like,” Wikston said. “We started gaining regular customers and the support of the community has been so successful that we couldn’t have reached this mile-

stone without them.”

The popular choice of knowing exactly where your food has come from continues to grow, allowing for the market to provide choices beyond the typical meat store. Churchhill Meats uses local family farms who are committed to raising the highest quality breeds, and are dedicated to caring for their livestock traditionally.

The downfall of offering natural options happens to be the cost, Wikston says. No stacking animals side-by-side in crates and barns, as they’re allowed to live in fields. Without the use of hormones, animals grow at a normal pace, which eventually adds to the cost of the meat.

“The cost of naturally-raised meat is higher than the other option. We get a lots of family buying smaller portions, which is awesome, but it’s always challenging competing with other meat stores that have a wide variety of suppliers to choose from.”

Many of the customers understand the difference and appreciate the talented staff which includes Raymond Haymes and general manager Mark Wikston.

“I’m lucky to have gotten into something I’m truly passionate about. It’s even better working beside the same type of people so we’re all grateful for the community support in Pelham.”

Beetle digging into town budget Getting a head start in the classroom Pelham could spend an estimated $87,000 to take down about 160 ash trees in town parks and road sides infected by the Emerald Ash Borer.

The non-native, wood-boring beetle feeds under the bark of ash trees. All species of ash are susceptible to attack and destruction.

The borer was first noticed in Pelham during 2013 after it spread from Michigan across Ontario.

The ash trees will have to be either removed this year or early 2015, said public works director Alan Mannell in a report to town council’s policy and priorities committee Monday.

The department will add money to its 2015 tree management budget to take down dying trees.

The infestation is particularly noticeable in the forested Woodstream Park but is also seen in ash trees along roadsides throughout the town, he said.

Large trees will require removal by professional tree services while town staff can take out smaller ones.

Mannell said the town will cut damaged trees in urban areas as soon as they show safety hazard signs.

“We removed some on Highland Avenue last week.”

Others will come down in 2015.

Ward 3 Coun. John Durley said he recalled the province saying it had money for Emerald Ash Borer damage when the town asked about aid for trees damaged by gypsy moths a couple of years ago.

Emergency template for town events Organizers of events in Pelham will soon have a template on how to prepare for emergencies.

These can range from severe weather to crowd control to fire or service failures as well as accidents.

Recreation director Vickie vanRavenswaay said Monday event organizers will be required to comply with the emergency measure preparations to get permits for use of town parks and buildings.

Her department prepared a detailed outline and forms in consultation with the fire department.

It is based on its years of experience running events in town. The department has dealt with storms, accidents, crowds, parking and scheduling problems.

Recent examples include Summerfest events hit by wind storms and rain as well as parking arrangements on Thursday evenings.

Town council’s policy and priorities committee Monday recommended the

event emergency management plan policy to town council.

The recreation department wants to post it on the town’s website to make it available to anyone holding an event.

It includes responsibilities of organizers, what to do in various emergencies, communication tips, safety measures, parking plans and weather monitoring.

“Each event emergency management plan is designed to suit the resources required for each individual event,” said van Ravenswaay.

“It is the intention to have this template available on our website as well as a 1,2, 3 step on hosting special events.”

Fire chief Bob Lymburner said the emergency plan will also apply to events, such as concerts, held on private property.

Liquor or other permits are usually required for them, he said, so the town can monitor whether emergency precautions are in place.

Earlier building inspections times offered Pelham had the busiest July in four years for the number of building permits taken out, the town council’s committee of the whole heard last week.

The town gave out 34 permits with a total construction value of $3.4 million.

Seven were for new commercial buildings while four for new dwellings.

Six sign permits went out and the rest for renovations.

Three of the projects included renovations to Old Pelham Town Hall and to Glynn A. Green Public School

while Pelham Community Church put on an addition.

The town carried out 130 building inspections during July.

Chief building official Mike Zimmer has changed the work schedule of building inspectors to offer on-site service at 7:45 a.m. instead of 9 a.m.

The building department has a new email address building-info@pelham.ca.

The public can now book inspections by email as well as by phone.

Yvonne Yochim is no stranger to the community. Having spent almost 20 years teaching at Fonthill Baptist Church Nursery School, she’s witnessed countless success stories of former students.

“The early years are so important for picking up the small things needed in life and it really shows talking to former students in Pelham,” Yochim said.

While the school has ran for over 30 years, she says many are still confused at what nursery school actually provides to children.

The misconception surrounding preschool as a ‘glorified babysitter’ remains common in many parents mind, says Yochim. It’s quite the opposite.

Studies have shown that children who attend high-quality preschool enter kindergarten with advanced reading skills, richer vocabularies, and stronger basic math skills than those who do not.

Yochim believes experiencing the social environment of being surrounded by other children are essential in making the transition into bigger schools.

Fonthill Baptist Church Nursery School also aims at teaching youngsters valuable life lessons. Previous classes have gone out a purchased toys for Pelham Cares during their Christmas Drive, something Yochim says instills a sense of community.

“We’re in a perfect location to show off what a community really does. We go on walks and explore the town so that the kids have a sense of where they are coming from.”

With a stronger push for educational activities for those below elementary school, full-day kindergarten has brought competition for the small nursery school.

Yochim says it’s been both a negative and a positive. Keeping class sizes small for more one-on-one opportunities are a part of the program, but the school runs through a group of volunteers, making each student’s fee key for providing the necessities.

Donations from families and volunteers, including the church who allow them a rent-free stay, have allowed the program to flourish, however. With new carpets and tricycles, the staff at Fonthill Baptist Church Nursery School are excited to begin another year.

“There is always some tears at the beginning of the year. By the end, they are smiling and confident children leaving us for bigger and better things.”

New office, apartment As I approach Pelham from Thorold on Regional Road 20, there are third party signs. A billboard sign, advertising the village shops in Pelham and a sign for a specific business. Why is it that these businesses cannot use third party signs in their own community, instead they must go into the neighbouring community to advertise? There is something wrong when a business in our community can advertise in a neighbouring community but not in their own, where they pay taxes.

As a citizen of Pelham, I disagree with the sign bylaw that we have in place. I believe we should allow our businesses the opportunity to advertise with third

party signs, as they deem appropriate, and not have to leave our community to do so. Third party signs are the norm for most of the places that I travel in Ontario and other jurisdictions in the country.

The town allows third party signs for service club activities and for real estate sales. They should also help our businesses to promote themselves by using signage. There can, and should be rules in place to regulate signs as to placement and size, but certainly in, my opinion, the town should allow third party signs.

Well, here we are in week five of construction. While we look forward to the completed project there have been many negative feelings and comments about the impact of the construction.

Having been in the construction area four out of five work days each week I have seen the project unfolding.

The work seems to have been meticulously planned and the work is proceeding in a well ordered way. The construction crews are doing their best to not impede

the flow of traffic, and are very courteous when asked questions. They are also doing the best they can to keep the dust to a minimum.

Thanks to the crews for keeping the stress of the construction to a minimum.

building for Fonthill A three-storey commercial and residential building will replace a medical office and clinic at 15 Hwy 20 in downtown Fonthill.

Town council’s committee of the whole reviewed its plan by Dr. Richard Taylor last week.

Commercial space will be on the first floor with 14 two-bedroom apartments on the second and third floors.

It will include underground parking and a roof top garden. It will have a walkway along its eastern side to improve access to Highway 20.

The project, which requires town council’s official approval, fits in with a downtown transitional area outlined in the town’s new Official Plan.

The plan, which took the town more than a decade to prepare, was approved by the Ontario Municipal Board in July.

It went through various alterations to adjust to changing regional and provincial policies. It then had to deal with legal appeals to the OMB. The Official Plan sets the pattern for long-term planning in Pelham such as how to set up urban areas like downtown Fonthill.

Promoting Pelham’s interests at AMO Conference Last week, councilors Catherine King and Peter Papp, town CAO Darren Ottaway, and I attended the 115th Annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario Conference (AMO). The Annual Conference offers a range of learning sessions and networking opportunities for municipal leaders. More than 1,200 delegates attended the three-day event in London themed “At the 4-Front.”

While at AMO, your Pelham reps also directly advanced your interests with the provincial government through meetings with various ministries.

First, we met with the Lou Rinaldi, MPP and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Municipal Affairs & Housing, to propose changes to the Greenbelt Plan and to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB).

We asked that the commercial district of Ridgeville be included as a “hamlet” during the 2015 review of the Greenbelt; we also suggested that the government relax the rules to make it easier for towns to build fire stations in the Greenbelt and that they consider more flexibility for farm operations.

Then we suggested improvements to the OMB appeal process based on the months and months of delays we faced before the ultimate approval of the town’s Official Plan and East Fonthill Secondary Plan.

Next, we met with Arthur Potts, MPP and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs regarding a potential multi-faceted community centre.

We outlined the extensive process we have used to determine the need for and feasibility of a centre; we also explained our need for provincial funding to help make the construction more affordable.

Finally, we outlined the other important developments in the East Fonthill area – the medical centre, the retirement home, the home for Wellspring Niagara, and the additional retail businesses.

Then, we met with Kathryn McGarry, MPP and Parliamentary Assistant to Minister of Transportation, regarding the proposed streetscape cross-sections – including separate bike and walking paths – and the construction of a public square in the East Fonthill development. We

also asked to work together with MTO to increase the “way-finding” signage to Pelham.

We met also with Eleanor McMahon, MPP and Parliamentary Assistant to Minister of Natural Resources and expressed our deep appreciation for the recent protection of the Fonthill Kame as an Area of Natural & Scientific Interest (ANSI). The ministry protected the Kame after our five years urging and we requested that protections remain untouched for many decades.

Finally, I also joined other Niagara mayors and the Regional Chair to meet with the Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation, to express the rational for an extension of GO transit commuter rail service to Niagara Region.

Please be assured that council and I will continue to take all opportunities to promote Pelham’s interests to the Provincial Government.

Baty: Niagara regional government term report This article follows up on the last general article which outlined the major initiatives and successes of the present four-year term of Niagara Regional Council.

Considerable effort is placed on measuring performance and comparing our results to those of other regions. We also have increased our efforts to communicate with staff and taxpayers in the region to seek their input or commentary on performance.

We undertook a governance review that revised the eligibility rules for candidates for Regional Chair so that the candidates for Chair must already have been elected by voters in their local municipality to the position of Regional Councillor.

We also revised the Code of Conduct to promote accountability and respect. An Integrity Commissioner was retained on an as-needed basis to promote compliance with the Code of Conduct. An improved audiovisual system was installed in the council chambers during a significant reconstruction. This includes computer monitors, a microphone and a voting machine at each councillor’s desk.

The speakers list is displayed and the speaker’s time is limited to ten minutes. When a vote is called the voting results are displayed to the public so that each councillor’s vote is recorded.

Major initiatives have taken place to promote Niagara as a place that is “Open for Business”. We totally revamped the economic development department and have established new levels of collaboration with local economic development offices.

For every dollar invested in brownfield properties, downtowns and heritage properties we have seen a nine- dollar return on investment. We eliminated the Industrial Development Charges resulting in the creation of 173 new jobs. Municipal Official Plan review and approval has been reduced in time by 80% from

750 to 117 days on average.

Partnered with a St.Catharines employer to create 400 positions, 68 of which were filled by individuals on social assistance. Secured a $5 million investment from ENERCON to produce electrical parts for wind turbines, creating 50 permanent jobs. Secured a Cultural Capital of Canada designation from Heritage Canada in 2012 and a $1.6 million grant to strengthen Niagara’s Culture Sector.

We recently established an annual Culture incentive grant program to further stimulate that employment sector. We invested in research and innovation to support entrepreneurial activities in biosciences, digital media and related information technology industries. $2 million was invested in the Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex at Brock University. $10,000 was contributed to establish the inaugural Niagara Integrated Film Festival.

We secured a $25 million investment from Chinabased TSP Canada Towers to produce wind turbine towers at the former Hayes-Dana plant creating 150 jobs. Canadian Tire Financial Services added 200 new jobs in Welland and St.Catharines with another 200 planned for 2014.

We partnered with Niagara College and Brock University to provide 750 students with training and workplace opportunities in our long-term care homes and child care centres.

We established a Niagara Gateway Economic Zone and Centre Implementation Committee to establish an incentive program to promote economic investment in the Centre along the Welland Canal from Thorold to Port Colborne and the Zone from Niagara Falls to Fort Erie along the QEW corridor.

We often hear about plant closures and the downside of a recession but there are good news stories as

well. In an Ipsos Reid survey in 2013, 68% of Niagara manufacturers expect to see an increase in business profitability over the next three years.

Town council Monday deferred for a month a request from the liquor control board for a variance to the sign bylaw.

storm sewer, excavation, granular and electrical work.

Similar work will continue through next week.

In downtown Fenwick, Canboro Road and parts of Maple Street and Church Street have been torn up.

Crews removed old sidewalks and storm sewer pipes are lined up for installation.

The revitalization work is being done by Stevensville Lawn Service, which bid $2.5 million for the project.

The town has a $4.1 million budget for the Fenwick

beautification work, which includes spending for utility relocations by Hydro One and Enbridge.

The Fenwick project, planned for the summer of 2013, was delayed a year by coordination problems with utilities and other levels of government.

The work, which will include new roadways, sidewalks, water and sewer lines as well as underground utility services, is expected to finish in the fall.

New timetable for Fenwick downtown work

The town has posted a new timetable for work on Fenwick’s downtown beautification on its website and in the Fenwick post office.

The project schedule was shown at last week’s committee of the whole meeting of town council.

The week-by-week outline stretches to the week of Oct. 20. In point form it mentions which construction projects are under way each week.

Motorcycle deaths rising With 26 motorcycle fatalities on record so far this year and at least two more months of the motorcycle season remaining, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is concerned that 2014 motorcycle deaths could reach a seven-year high.

As of August 18, 25 motorcyclists and one passenger have died in motorcycle crashes within OPP jurisdiction this year. The high number has prompted the OPP to share some facts and dispel some myths relating to the fatal motorcycle collisions it investigates in an effort to raise awareness about motorcycle safety.

Airport invasion

The Niagara Central Airport looked more like a battlefield last week as soldiers from a variety of country’s took part in a military exercise to reclaim the property.

Designed around a potential real-life scenario, the exercise played out like a large game of laser tag. Each soldier was equipped with a weapon and a targeting system to simulate an actual battle. If a soldier was struck, their device was set off, alerting where on the body they had been hit.

“This whole idea is for us to come back as a unit and use all the training we’ve done for the entire summer,” Warrant Officer Dean Henley, of the Grey-Simcoe Foresters, said. “All the lessons learned, we bring them together and practice to see if it works.”

Warrant Officer Henley unit were the ‘bad guys’ who had taken over the airport. Positioned behind buildings, they waited patiently for the attack.

“For every one enemy, we have three soldiers to look after that guy. That is why it is a Company attack.”

Over 100 soldiers rushed the facility, using strategy, and working together with other units from the U.S. and across the pond. Machine gun fire from the forest covered the advance, but soldiers who had been hit sat patiently waiting in the field.

“It’s very realistic,” Warrant Officer Henley said. “My guys have been probing positions using civilian vehicles to gain the upper hand on positions of the attacking troops. Each unit works things slightly different, so it’s a great way to simulate a battle.”

Other areas in Niagara also concluded similar scenarios, something Warrant Officer Henley says was new to Ontario.

“This is one of the first big exercisers that I know in Ontario that has been like this where we’ve spent time in a metropolitan area doing exercise such as this. We’ve been extra careful on how everything went down so that we are welcomed back and not cause any problems while we are down.”

Despite a few 911 calls, the operation went down without a hitch. Land agreements were signed back in December with a variety of clauses on each property. Warrant Officer Henley says some property owners didn’t want gunfire so they used the land as meeting points. Other procedures such as road closures during the airport attack, led to a safer scenario for the public and the troops.

“When we practice at the army base, we can go pick up everything after the exercise,” he said. “If you lose a piece of kit accidentally, it wouldn’t be good.”

He said nothing of danger are in the kits, but they were aiming to leave minimal damage to the environment, including picking up all shell casings.

A open house for the public to view soldiers and machines was also held last Thursday in Welland at the former John Deere Plant.

Vicky Vlassis-Radulovich was born and raised in Pelham and has been happily instructing professional voice lessons in the Fonthill area for almost 10 years. She’s well qualified in her field, holding a Master of Music Degree in Voice from Western University, a Bachelor of Education from Brock University and a post-graduate Diploma in Voice Technique from the Music University of Augsburg, Germany.

Throughout her years of instructing, parents always inquired about lessons for other instruments. VlassisRadulovich is routinely happy to refer students to her colleagues as she understands how difficult it can be to find a good teacher that is a professionally trained musician and a trained educator as well. This combination ensures the teacher not only specializes in their instrument; but also has the capability and technical knowledge to teach and then transfer that information to students correctly and effectively. Being a strong advocate for enriched music education, she decided to open a music school in Grimsby called STRIVE Studios - Professional Music Education; which offers lessons for several instruments with a highly educated faculty.

With the success of Strive Studios, she now feels the time is right to open a music school in Pelham. She always wanted to open a school here as well, and is very excited to be expanding into Fonthill. She is even more excited about the calibre of teachers that will be joining her in this venture. Vlassis-Radulovich is hoping to offer private piano, violin, guitar and bass lessons for beginner to very advanced students. If there is interest she is also hoping to provide Suzuki violin classes.

Brent Wirth will be the studio’s guitar and bass teacher. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from York University and is truly a fantastic instructor. Wirth is a classically trained guitarist, and also the lead performer in his highly successful band ‘Thought Beneath Film” that recently received a recording contract and a $50,000 prize for best new song. His professional band was recently the opening act for the TIFF Festival (Toronto International Film Festival). Wirth is a high demand teacher as his students’ progress quickly both

technically and musically.

Dr. Tatiana Korotkova holds a PH.D in Music Education from the Russian Academy of Education in Moscow and will be the studio’s specialized piano instructor.

She is a very professional educator capable of instructing students of all ages from beginner to very advanced players with optimal results.

Also on board is professional violinist and certified teacher Jadwiga Pomorski, who holds a Masters Degree from the Music University of Katowice in Poland and a Specialist Teaching Degree from the University of Toronto. Pomorski specializes in violin and was also a strings director for the District School Board of Niagara. Her students absolutely love her and her approach with students is superb.

The calibre of instructors is truly top notch and you can certainly hear it when their students perform.

While each teacher specializes in their instrument they also address confidence, craft, musicality, performance skills, technique, motivation, energy, theory and of course fun. Although some students take lessons for pure enjoyment, many also compete in competitions and pursue studies at the university level and beyond.

She’s extremely thankful for all her voice students and for her colleagues. She is particularly grateful to the community of Pelham and for the strong bonds she has been able to develop with all her students. Many of her students have won several competitions, recorded albums, reached personal goals, and also entered music programs at the university level. She instructs all styles, levels and ages with her youngest student being five-years-old and her eldest being 91. She is extremely proud of her students and their achievements, and feels grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of their musical and artistic development.

Vlassis-Radulovich remains fascinated on what music lessons can really do for someone; from improved focus and cognitive functioning in children; to stress management and improved mood to students of any age. The benefits of music lessons are truly remarkable as supported in many scientific and medical studies.

As the famous Greek philosopher and mathematician Plato once said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”

Lessons will be held at Fonthill United Church at 42 Church Hill St. The facility is truly beautiful and it will also give students the chance to perform in the sanctuary with a grand piano.

Get organized: Before the hustle and bustle of school really kicks in, take some time to get ahead of the game.

Put together a master calendar that everyone can use for the year, including important school dates, vacations, sporting events and practices, and parent teacher conferences to keep you on schedule. Make sure you’ve prepared all of the paperwork, school supplies, and permission slips you and your kids need. throughout the years, but nothing this major.

“This is a very old and historical building, so it was a very big decision to move walls, but everything is going beautiful so far,” Linda Allison, who’s on the building committee, said.

The renovations will include a lift, updated bathrooms and more space for those who use the church.

“We’re extremely happy we can keep serving during the project. The contractors have been great to allow us to use the building despite construction. They promised us it would stay open and they’ve kept their word.”

An added bonus to the build are local trades people involved in the project. Having those who use the building also renovate it, has put committee members at ease knowing work will be done properly.

“People we know and people who know this building are a part of taking Pelham Community Church into something special, so we’re really happy about that,” Allison said.

Back in June, the church received $25,000 for renovations. That funding, along with pledges and donations, has helped raise an astonishing $400,000.

Lymburner said the SPCA does not respond to cat complaints unless it involves care and treatment of cats.

In municipalities with a cat bylaw, “the burden is placed solely on the complainant to catch the animal, turn the animal into the SPCA, build a case around the alleged infraction and attend court if a charge is laid,” town staff said in a report. The complainant even has to rent a cage to catch the cat.

Town staff talked to the SPCA and bylaw enforcement officers around the region.

Providing information to residents to deter cats from entering properties was more effective than a cat bylaw.

“The overwhelming suggestions to keep cats out of gardens or off lawns is to put ammonia in a margarine type container, poke holes in the lid and place them around your property or in areas where a cat has been bothersome,” staff said in a report.

Lymburner said he would talk to local veterinarians about other possible methods.

Work in progress for Pirates

The Pelham Pirates finished training camp early last week and quickly stumbled out of the gate.

The hosts of the annual Pirates Cup tournament couldn’t manage to find any chemistry on ice. Bouncing pucks and missed defensive pairings made for a rough three-game stint against Buffalo, Caledonia and Brantford for goaltenders vying for a roster spot.

Despite the slow start, the players weren’t worrying about the exhibition tournament.

“Training camp in general has been great so far,” Markham native Jacob DeMaeyer said. “Everything is new to everyone including where we are playing. We’re still coming together, but there is tons of potential in this locker room.”

While the offence was lacking the entire tournament, the fight in the players wasn’t. A few fists were thrown, including a tilt involving DeMaeyer, which showed promise of toughness during a gruelling 49 game schedule.

“We’ll look to be gritty and hard-working as a team.

Nothing will come easy but that’s the great thing about hockey.”

Pirates will be making roster cuts in the upcoming weeks as preseason nears. Jr. A and the Ontario Hockey League roster cuts also determine final spots heading into the regular season. Their first game is Sept. 12.

Pelham will buy hockey change room The town will buy, rather than lease, a portable change room for the Pelham Pirates Junior B hockey team.

The change room for the team will sit beside the Pelham Arena.

Chief administrative officer Darren Ottaway said leasing a portable would cost $70,000 for 28 months.

However, the cost of installation and upgrading it to legislated accessibility requirements would bring the total cost to $91,615. It would require a ramp.

Buying the portable would cost $95,589, he said. The

town could then sell it for about $50,000 when it was finished with it.

The Junior B club is leasing the arena for two years with an option to move into a new multi-purpose community complex for five years. The new change room was part of the deal.

Ottaway told council Monday architects he was talking to said it was unlikely a new complex could be ready before 2017.

Planning meetings are held monthly with each committee member taking responsibility for a small part of arranging for the upcoming festival according to their time and interest and then all working together to produce an event for the Town to be proud of. They want to hear from you even if you only have time to help on the weekend of the show since many volunteers are needed on the weekend when the event takes place.

into a destination for artists and art lovers that attracts about 2,000 people to the Art Festival on Mother’s Day weekend.

The Pelham Art Festival has a mandate to promote art and culture and to raise money which is donated back to the community. Over the past 28 years, The Pelham Art Festival Committee has participated in fundraising efforts for the community through the display and sale of art at the Art Festival. In that time, the group has raised over $365,000 for the Pelham Library System and about $30,000 has been raised to cover $1,000 annual scholarships to E.L. Crossley Secondary School graduating students who plan to proceed to post secondary fine art studies. In addition, a further $30,000 raised through the Pelham Art Festival has been returned to the community over the years for a variety of art related activities that are intended to open the eyes of people to the power of art.
