Legion recognizes veterans with book BY WAYNE CAMPBELL
for the VOICE Edmond Duguay looked back more than 70 years as he outlined his Second World War service record to Rick Hatt. Hatt, branch service officer for Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613, filled out a one- page form for Duguay and attached a photo from his days with the Régiment de la Chaudière. Duguay has medals for service with the regiment,
which fought its way across France, Holland and Germany from D-Day to the end of the war. He laughs as he remembers his early military days. The Acadian from a small New Brunswick town learned to speak English during Canadian Army training. The Chaudière however was a francophone regiment. His picture and information will go into a military service book recognizing veterans in Ontario. “It is one of the best things our Ontario com-
mand has come up with,” said Hatt about the threebook project. It will help identify and recognize veterans within the Province of Ontario who have served their country during times of conflict and peace. “This book will go a long way in assisting us in our jobs as the Keepers of Remembrance so that none of us forget the selfless contributions made by so many who have served or still continue to do so,” said the legion in its backSee Veterans (Page 5)

United Way of South Niagara refocuses on root causes BY STEPHEN DYELL
for the VOICE The United Way of South Niagara is looking for help from the community. After years of service, the fundraising organization has taken a step back and aim to put a bigger focus on tackling root causes affecting clients within the program. “Since 2010, United Way of South Niagara and a number of community
partners were involved in trying to find out the key challenges in south Niagara, what some of the community priorities for investment were,” executive director Tamara Coleman-Lawrie said. “The ever-mighty dollar is not stretching as far as it use to. There is more competition for donor dollars so far for the agencies competing, so we need to collectively do a better job of engaging our donors and investing
their dollars for the greatest impact.” A three-year report on programs and funding highlighted concerns of duplications within the system. Consultations from Pelham, Welland, Port Colborne and the Francophone community teamed up to discuss, debate and find answers to the problems facing agencies in Niagara. Lack of awareness, transportation, affordable housing and access
to health care were major issues targeted in the report. The roadmap to each cause was addressed and proper steps were given to combat these challenges. “Evidence shows that if you invest in root causes of challenges and issues, that you are going to have a greater impact rather than just throwing money at a program and having a band-aid solution.” Solutions may be hard to come by with limited
funding. Recently, they received 25 applications for upwards of 35 programs – something that is just not possible in terms of funding. “Some of the programs and services that we have traditionally funded may not fit that criteria so we will really have to look how we can support those services,” Coleman-Lawrie said. “(We’ll) transition them into what our model is.” See United Way (Page 5)
