THE HILL BY STEPHEN DYELL

for the VOICE Cyclists had scenic views but the daunting task of climbing Saylor’s Hill during Sunday’s Niagara Classic Bicycle Race.

More than 400 racers rode through rural Pelham in an event that featured a 12.4 kilometre loop which forced riders up the steep hill.

Ciprian Scriuba of Toronto cycled his third Niagara race. The avid rider took last year off but this is his third Niagara Classic race “It was good ride overall,” he said.

“The hill was pretty hard but I’m glad the weather was perfect, because it made for a great day of racing for everyone.”

The behind the scenes the St. Catharines Cycling Club, with dozens of volunteers helped in the race.

“It’s months of planning

for this event,” Stephen Cheung, member and volunteer, said.

“Lots to do including working with the city, police and the community.

One of the things we try and do is be respectful of the community and the people who live around here.”

Cheung said the support from the community has been outstanding, with several neighbours lining the streets to cheer each rider on as they past.

“Everyone knows this race. They know how hard Saylor’s Hill is, so it makes for a great event,” Cheung said.

“It’s been an ongoing event for many years so it’s been a historic anchor for the cycling scene in Ontario.”

Cheung said they’ve hosted many riders who’ve gone onto professional careers, including Steve Bauer.

LETTERS to the editor Even though the Supper Market is not confirmed yet, there seems to be some division growing between it and the Farmer’s Market.

As a downtown tenant, I would happily volunteer my parking space for a Thursday night Supper Market, but I don’t think that using business parking spaces for the Supper Market is the solution.

Neither is the street under the Arches.

A better solution is to site the Supper Market in the parking lot immediately South of the Farmer’s Market, between it and City Hall.

There would be no separation between the two

Markets. They would be united.

Besides the fact that this area already has electrical service, a clear benefit is that the Supper Market vendors could show their community spirit by getting many of their ingredients in real-time from the Farmer’s Market vendors, only a few steps away. We need more collaborations like this, instead of putting up fences.

The Supper Market vendors could adjust their menus to be compatible with what is available at the Farmer’s Market. As a customer of both, I would be very proud to see such an expression of cooperation and creativity.

I am writing this letter before the council meeting on May 20, so I do not know what the outcome has been. The Supper Market will again be before council, this time with a different location and I expect a decision on whether or not it will go ahead this year will have been made. So far it has been a struggle to even keep all points of view at the table.

The Supper Market has been on a mission to get approved for this year regardless of objections and by now they may have succeeded.

Everyone who has objected to this new market has agreed they would fully support it on a different night when there is not as much congestion and it is not at the same time as the Farmer’s Market. The Supper Market has rejected this outright because Thursday is the night they see a decline in business. They also feel that the new parking plan should take care of many of the congestion and parking issues.

If they have succeeded then I must congratulate them. It seems pretty bold to argue that you are losing business because there are too many people in the area of your business on a certain night. I thought the problem was no parking for customers. The restaurants that are impacted all have their own parking lots and the parking plan should ensure that they can be used for their customers. Shouldn’t this be problem solved? It really is difficult for someone to stop at the hardware store or one of the stores in the plaza to pick something up on a Thursday night when there is nowhere for them to park and I truly hope the new parking plan will improve the situation for these types of businesses. There are other food businesses downtown that are able to benefit from the additional people

It is important to recognize town staff in all this, since they would probably car pool on Thursdays more than they do now.

And while the southeast parking lot would remain available for cars, the Town could add a few accessible parking spots by renting them from businesses around Pelham Town Square.

An added benefit of uniting the Markets is that there is no need to pave over an area of grass in Peace Park, as was one suggestion.

We don’t need to lose yet more green space in this town, do we?

and there have been questions of whether the restaurants behind the Supper Market are actually losing that much business.

If bringing themselves even closer to the bandshell crowds is what they need, why have none of these restaurants even applied to the Farmer’s Market? That is what we did at Nature’s Corner and now we are honoured to be in our third year as a part of an organization that brings local products to our community and helps to preserve our agricultural heritage. If the Supper Market hopes to benefit the Farmer’s Market like they say they do, why have they been reluctant to collaborate or even meet with the Farmer’s Market Committee unless forced to do so by Council?

Councillor Acursi (a member of the Supper Market committee) has actually said that if these two entities were seen as two businesses operating opposite each other, they would not consult each other before opening. This is both a bewildering and a revealing statement. The Supper Market committee has also made the point that people are coming into town with money in their pockets and they think they can get them to spend more of it. It seems clear that the Supper Market wants to operate in part to spite the Farmer’s Market.

They believe food vendors at the Farmer’s Market are making all kinds of money and are just trying to protect themselves from competition. Some simple communication from the start could have helped to get to the truth and bring about cooperation. The Farmer’s Market has been responsive to the growing crowds during bandshell concerts and has added more food vendors in recent years. I can think of 8 permanent food vendors with

Pelham Art Festival Committee the possibility of more on certain evenings.

The Farmer’s Market has said they are open to discussing an expansion which could include some of the restaurants in question, as well some additional farm producers. The Supper Market instead prefers their plan to add another 10 food vendors that would be outside of the restrictions of the Farmer’s Market.

The sudden addition of this many food vendors at once would no doubt be pushing the limits and make it more difficult for some at both markets. The timing would also create complications for vendors who wish to move from the Farmer’s Market to the Supper Market because all fees have been paid and the season set for the Farmer’s Market. There are Farmers that have also said that a new event like this will have a negative impact on their business and that if they can not make enough they will need to stay home.

This is based on their actual experiences at other markets.If farmers can not survive, the Farmer’s Market can not survive. Whatever happens, there will still be food vendors at the Bandshell concerts but the future of the Farmer’s Market is not so sure. I hope that Council has seen the best course of action would be to delay the approval of the Supper Market this year and allow the markets to continue talking until true cooperation and collaboration can be achieved. If the Supper Market has been approved I hope that people will continue to show strong support for the Farmer’s Market and that things will work out with the greatest possible success for everyone on all sides.

Changes are underway at Fonthill Paint and Decorating as they get set to renovate the town.

“We’ve grown to become a big part of this community for the painting services itself,” Owner Chris Baxter, who implemented paint services to homes once he took over in 2007.

“As much as the painting service is great, we have the ability to offer our customers more.”

The business will now be expanding their services as they enter the world of home renovations with a highly qualified contractor.

Tim Yanor will be joining the group on Hwy. 20 with over 30 years of experience across North America. His connections and relationships with veteran trades will be a key component of the business moving forward.

“He’s got those set trades with many years in the industry,” Baxter said.

“He knows their work which will be a big asset moving forward.”

Fonthill Paint and Decorating will remain the same business, but will look to grow in a new direction, Baxter says.

“We’ll always do the painting, but there is much more in Pelham that can be done. The renovation business is tricky, but we’re excited that we can

actually grow.”

Most Canadians know more about the American than Canadian role in the D-Day invasion.

Historian and author Terry Copp in his books and lectures strives to counter a cultural influence of movies and television.

Speaking to about 50 at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613 last week, Copp said the Canadian landing in the Juno Sector and fighting in Normandy should be the collective memory of Canadians.

It is part of the story of Canada that has not been told well.

Canadian soldiers, sailors and air crews fought not only for the liberation of Europe, but for a better world, he said.

D-Day critics say the Canadian army lacked experience and disregarded formal discipline.

Copp called it citizen army that quickly learned the skills of war “out of shear necessity.”

Combat fleas and ticks on your pets (NC) While the arrival of spring is the perfect time for outdoor activities with our cats and dogs, it also brings seasonal increases of ticks and fleas.

It is important to realize, say specialists, that significant medical conditions are transmitted by, and related to the presence of these parasites, including tapeworms, flea allergy dermatitis, and various tick borne diseases.

Prevention —Grooming: Frequently comb your pet with a flea comb. Flea combs have very narrow

bristles that trap adult fleas.

Topical treatments: A simple monthly preventative topical treatment will repel and kill fleas on your pet and are excellent for keeping pets pest-free when used year-round.

Indoors: Vacuum your home often and put a little flea powder or a flea collar into your vacuum bag to kill any fleas inside.

Treatment —Flea Baths: If your pet has a significant number of fleas, a flea bath is usually the first step. Most flea sham-

poos work well and will kill adult fleas but are too powerful to use on young puppies.

Flea collars, sprays and powders: While flea collars help, some kill fleas mainly on the pet’s face and neck but don’t kill all fleas on pet’s body.

Sprays and powders are also available but make sure it is designed for your pet and not for your house. Never treat your pet with more than one flea product at a time and never use product labeled exclusively for cats.

Tick removal: You will need tweezers and alcohol to remove ticks. First, try using an alcohol swab which may irritate the tick and cause it to loosen its grip. Grab the tick with the tweezers where the mouth enters the skin.

Do not grab it by its body.

Proceed to remove the tick with a slow, steady pull without twisting. Deposit the tick in alcohol and clean the area with a disinfectant.

The landing and the fighting in Normandy became one of the longest battles Canadians have ever fought.

It was more significant than Passchendaele in the First World War because it changed the course of the war.

While D-Day was well planned, little went as planned, Copp said. Bad weather dispersed paratroopers. Bombs failed to hit defence fortifications.

He based his books on extensive interviews with hundreds of participants.

The experience of individuals on D-Day resembled a lottery, he said.

“It depended on where your unit landed whether you faced heavy or light defences.”

Copp has released an updated version of his book, Fields of Fire: The Canadians in Normandy, in time for the 70th anniversary of D-Day this June 6.

He will attend commemorations on Juno. Over

the years, monuments to Canadian achievements as well as well-tended graves tell the story of Canada and D-Day. Originally a labour historian, Copp became interested in military history when he travelled with fellow professor and German immigrant Robert Vogel, through and northwest Europe. They researched the invasion from allied and German sources.

“It gave us a view from both sides of the ridge,” said Copp referring to a military saying.

They wrote a book, The Maple Leaf Route, about the Canadian army’s role in Europe.

Copp is a director of the Laurier Centre for Strategic Military Strategic and Disarmament Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. It publishes the Canadian Military History Journal.

Copp’s lecture was sponsored by The Pelham Public Library and Branch 613.

In the 2011 election, Hudak took just over 50% of votes cast in the riding with 24,778. Liberal Katie Trombetta came second with 26% and New Democrat Anthony Marco third with 18%. Meredith Cross had 2.8 % . Other candidates had under 1% each.

House League ID Day Cancelled Club president Stuart Macpherson has been informed by the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN) they will be delaying all field permits until at least May 31. These permits are required for the Club to have access to DSBN fields for game and practice use. The Town of Pelham, as of press time, had not issued the same statement, therefore allowing town-owned fields to remain open.

In light of these recent developments, the Club is forced to cancel their planned Evaluation Day for all pre-squirt and

squirt house league players. it was the Club’s intention this season to hold a brief workout with all registered players in these leagues, consisting of basic drills to evaluate the technical talents of each player to form teams that are all on a level paying field in terms of skill.

The Club is still committed to this process for 2015.

The annual Soccerfest celebration day, sponsored by the local branches of RBC, will remain as scheduled for June 7 as a day of fun for the house league players to

welcome the start of the soccer season. This is a great event for all the kids to have their family come out and cheer them on, as well as the Club’s local sponsors to see first-hand what their support means to these players.

This is the question that I am being asked often this spring. After enduring the extremely cold winter, I am finding many plants need a severe pruning. I had some time last weekend to be out in the garden and I spent the greater part of the day pruning my rose and hydrangea bushes. Typically when pruning rose bushes I would count approximately 5 eyes (sprouting shoots from the main canes) from the bottom of the stem and then prune. This year I am cutting back all of the dead canes and I am left with to 2 to 4 eyes.

Now that they have all of the dead wood trimmed away, they will grow to become beautiful roses again. This variety is called Knock-Out Roses, an easy to grow rose with vibrant pink flowers, beautiful dark leaves, and a lovely sweet fragrance.

My hydrangeas have also had a tough time making it through the winter. All of the top branches of the hydrangea did not survive so they needed to be trimmed off. They need a severe trim which ends up having us prune a lot more than we normally would. The pruning will promote a lot of new growth which may end up in fewer flowers for this year but will help the plant for future blooming.

Pic’s Motor Clinic celebrates 35 years BY STEPHEN DYELL

for the VOICE Andy Groen enjoyed fiddling around with small engines. A licensed electrician by trade, living in Mount Hope, he never imagined one move would change the course of his life.

The Groen’s moved to Fenwick in 1979 and purchased the Pic’s Motor Clinic, quickly turning his passion into profession.

Something Andy says, was one of the best decisions he’s ever made.

“I love going to work everyday cause it isn’t just a job. I really enjoy what I do,” Andy said. “There have been difficult days but it’s been a really great blessing to be able to do this. You don’t worry about everything else – I just love to do it and whatever I get is just an added bonus.”

Originally opened in 1947, the business grew bigger as years went on.

Around that time, Andy’s two sons – Steve and Dave – joined the business and became an important component to an industry shifting towards technology-based machinery.

With experience on com-

puters and a degree in electronic engineering, the young men have been a welcomed addition to the family business.

“I’ve always been here and learned as I went on,” Steve stated. “I kept learning new information for

the business and I grew up with computers, so it was easier for me than the others.”

With tractors, lawnmowers and everything in between switching to repairs on a computer instead of the old fashioned wrench,

Pic’s Motor Clinic remains ahead of other businesses when it comes to the wide-variety of services offered.

The large showroom with equipment fully assembled kept the business going in Pelham, as they celebrate owning Pic’s Motor Clinic for 35 years.

They earned the Toro Summit Award for outstanding sales and service in 2013, which they say is due to the continued support of the community.

“We’re just trying to service the community.

Being in Pelham, it’s such a nice community where you get to know everyone over the years,” Andy said.

“Working with and dealing with the customers has been the biggest pleasure of the whole operations.”

His wife Nellie agrees.

“Most of our customers are people we now know,” she said. “It’s fun because you don’t come in as a number – you come in as a name.”

Dog park set to open June 23

After three years of hard work, the dream has finally turned into reality. “Doesn’t seem quite real yet,� DeFazio said at the Pelham dog park groundbreaking ceremony. “It took small steps to get here and now it’s actually happening.�

The first leash-free dog park is set to open on June 23 and will be the third former landfill site to be used by dog lovers.

“When council was approached by Pam and members of Pelham DOGS, they wanted their municipality to have a leash-free dog park,� Mayor Dave Augustyn said. “Instead of driving somewhere else, they wanted it here.�

The group not only fought to get it inside the town, but also were a major contributing factor to the overall costs. Since the announcement in 2013, just under $10,000 have been collected from Pelham DOGS to cover some of the costs.

“This is truly special,�

Regional Chair Gary Burroughs said. “It took the residents to make it happen and I congratulate everyone who made this possible. This will be a great place for the residents of Pelham.�

DeFazio looks forward to the opening when her hard work and dedication to her canine friends will be on full display. “Everybody has been very supportive. They keep telling me how they’re looking forward to the opening and I keep telling them, I do too.�

Canalside Players will be opening Who’s Under Where? on Friday, May 23, at the Welland Community Wellness Complex. The comedy is written by the talented Marcia Kash and Doug Hughes.

The Cyclone’s came out strong and captured several first place finishes in their qualifying competition.

Rebecca Camplin took first place in the 800 metre and 1500 metre race while teammate Victoria

Fair captured first place in the 80 metre hurdles, shot put and pole vault.

No lack of speed on the girls side with top finishes in the 4x100 metre relay and other sprinting events.

The boys results were quite similar.

Seniors in the 400 metre hurdles swept the podium. Ryan Kort also

captured first in the 1500 metre run with teammate Jared Carter also advancing to SOSSA. The junior pole vaulting team was also able to finish one, two and three to move on.

The top five individuals and relay teams moved onto SOSSA which is held at the Niagara Olympic Club on Thursday.

for the VOICE Tim Hudak, the incumbent Niagara West-Glanbrook MPP, said he favours GO Transit service to Niagara, a mid-peninsula transportation corridor, agriculture research and lower taxes for riding residents.

The Progressive Conservative party leader said , however, if his party wins the current provincial election tax cuts and services will have to wait until the province balances its books.

That could be done by 2016, he predicted.

“We must do first things first,” he told The Voice.

His goals are balancing the budget and creating jobs.

Hudak called this a single-issue election about which leader has a plan to get people working in the province.

Hudak cited an eightyear million jobs plan he said was created from advice he received “from the small operators to the largest companies” and economists.

Part of his plan calls for laying off 100,000 public servants.

Pelham is the Niagara home to nurses, teachers, doctors, professors, and other public servants.

Hudak said without more private sector jobs

The Liberal government added 300,000 public servants while 300,000 manufacturing jobs disappeared, he said.

Those jobs would come from skilled trades, an advanced manufacturing comeback, agriculture and agribusiness, he said.

Among proposed cuts in services is a seniors program to upgrade housing.

“It is no longer whether a program is good or bad, it is a need to set priorities,” Hudak said about service cuts.

Similarly affordable energy will be crucial and that includes cuts in solar and wind subsidies as well as reducing hydro’s bureaucracy, he said. It would lower hydro rates.

The Progressive Conservatives have opened a campaign office in Pelham at the old Donut Diner on Regional Road 20 east of downtown Fonthill.

Hudak, 46, has served in the Ontario legislature since 1995 representing riding in Niagara. He was a cabinet minister in the Progressive Conservative government of Michael Harris and became PC leader in 2009.

He was born in Fort Erie, lives in Wellandport, and is married to Deb Hutton.

They have two daughters Miller Olive Hudak, 6, and Maitland Hutton Hudak, 8 weeks.

Pelham Friends launch first seniors social BY STEPHEN DYELL

for the VOICE A new opportunity for seniors in Pelham begins on May 22.

Pelham Friends Church members Karen Elliott, Joan Barber and Janet Tritton noticed a vacancy of activities for seniors to do in town and decided to make an event dedicated towards providing entertainment and an opportunity to socialize with others.

“We attended a seniors luncheon in Wainfleet and realized we are lacking something here in the town,” Elliott said.

“People kept asking if we’d start something here so we eventually planned this day out.”

“They use to have a ladies aid a number of years ago, but that’s gone now and we were left with a hole,” Tritton said.

With a rising senior population, the three sisters want to provide an opportunity for both sexes to attend and enjoy the day.

Often senior activities in Pelham are either geared towards the husband or the wife, so they’re aiming for the perfect balance.

“I want us to reach out to other people in the community who may not have something to go to,” Elliott said. “A lot of seniors end up being bored, so we wanted to offer something that they can get involved with other people as well.”

With planning underway, members are taking things slow to start. The

gathering will not be monthly as the ladies do not want the event to fizzle out. Instead, they will

offer inspirational and entertaining acts several times a year for the community.

Their first senior social will be held at the church and will feature performances by local quartet

‘Vintage Blend’.

“Initially, we wanted something attractive to get them to come. I saw the quartet and realized they were local and thought it would be a great idea for our first seniors social.”

The sisters have heard positive comments on the planned activities, but also welcome suggestions towards making a better event. They say certain events will put a focus on Pelham Cares and Open Arms Mission, while others will be strictly entertainment.

The event begins at noon on May 22 and is open to anybody interested in attending. Donations will be accepted to help cover charges. For more information, contact Pelham Friends Church at 905892-6881.

NIFF takes over Niagara

Bill Marshall says yes.

The Toronto International Film Festival cofounder was at Market Square in St. Catharines to launch his newest project in the Niagara International Film Festival (NIFF).

“This is a really exciting day in St. Catharines and Niagara,” St. Catharines Mayor Brian McMullan, whose niece is a filmmaker, said. “Bill, your experience, passion and dedication has made this possible for our region.”

“We know about the Niagara brand living here, but a chance to share this to those attracted by the film festival will be fantastic.”

The festival runs June 19 to 22 in St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

It puts an emphasis on

local talent and also hidden gems in the world of cinema.

Modelled after the successful Toronto festival, the Niagara experience will be slow and look to build upon further years.

It will also be a showcase of all Niagara has to offer including wineries, restaurants and scenery but also dig deep into the art scene which set to flourish in downtown St. Catharines once the Performing Arts Centre opens in 2016.

The arrival of NIFF comes more as a test and a treat for residents over the summer.

“Everyone keeps asking whose coming and I keep telling them that George Clooney won’t be here,” Marshall joked.

may never get the chance to show their work. Instead of heading to bigger cities for exposure, he hopes local talent can shine inside the city they grew up in.

Documentaries, cartoon and every kind of film will be on display for the three day event including the world premiere of Restrung and A Night In Mexico, starring Robert Duvall. The festival will be a boost to the tourism industry but is designed for locals to appreciate.

“Yes, tourist will come (to enjoy Niagara), but what is important is the experience for the residents who live here. For them to come out and enjoy the local talent and the overall festival.”
