Hundreds ventured out to explore more than 80 vendors from across Niagara, but the biggest

winners weren’t the roofers or window installers.

“Each person who came through the door paid $3. Those proceeds are going to Pelham Cares so it’s a win-win situation for everyone,” Fonthill and District Kinsmen member Len Doyle said.

missions will go into the Home for Good Capital Campaign. It is fund to help Pelham Cares pay a mortgage on its new home on Hwy. 20.

Doyle said the addition of an art contest brought in a younger crowd from years past.

Local children from

seven different schools in Welland and Pelham submitted over 200 pieces of artwork to be judged by home show visitors.

“We asked kids to draw a home for Pelham Cares,” Doyle said.

“It was a nice change because it caused people to slow down and look

at the art. More people stayed in the show longer which was great for the vendors too.”

“We are getting more participants and more attendees. It’s exactly what we were aiming for.”

Winners of the art contest and the total raised for Pelham Cares will be announced next week by the Fonthill and District Kinsmen.

The home show is the Kinsmen’s largest annual fundraiser.

Money through the

rental of booths is used to finance Kinsmen projects through the year.

They include annual dinner and Christmas Party for seniors, a citizen of the year and a young citizen of the year programs, support for sports teams, donations to Cystic Fibrosis Canada and assistance to various community projects.

The Kinsmen began the home show 19 years ago to assist local small businesses by putting them in touch with local consum-

ers.

It the fall the Kinsmen will hold an annual craft show. It will help Women’s Place shelter and other charities.

The Kinsmen Club is a Canadian service club founded by veterans of the First World War. It’s motto is “Serving the community’s greatest need.”

Art on bags send earthy messages BY WAYNE CAMPBELL

for the VOICE St. Alexander Catholic School students continued a decade long Earth Day tradition last week.

They sent save-the-earth tips to shoppers through grocery bag art.

The students from all grades drew on more than 400 biodegradable

brown paper bags. They were used by Sobeys to pass their messages to shoppers.

Grade 8 students helped to pack bags at the Fonthill grocery store.

“It’s a big thing with parents who go to the store to try to find their children’s bags,” said Grade 4 teacher Lorena Blouin.

ed to encourage people to reduce garbage in the home. For transportation, she suggests walking, cycling and car pooling.

Bethany Langelaan, also in Grade 6, wants everyone to take responsibility for the care of the earth “We have to help it.”

For shopping, she suggests reusable bags.

helping the earth in your own home. When you don’t need it, for example, you can turn off the water.

Town helps library with $40,000 grant BY WAYNE CAMPBELL

for the VOICE A one-time $40,000 grant from a contingency fund will allow the Pelham Public Library to retain current services and operating hours through 2014.

“It will give us time to look ahead,” said acting chief executive officer Amy Guilmette.

The library ended 2013 with a deficit but was able to cover it by holding back on hiring a CEO and other spending.

However, last week it asked town council for $40,000 to ensure services remain stable while it develops a plan for its future.

“To have a balanced budget for 2014 and to

keep current levels of service and operating hours until a review can be completed, town staff recommended the library board make a one-time request for $40,000 from the contingency fund,” library board chair Maxine Gaylor told councillors during council’s regular meeting last week.

Meanwhile, the library board will review library staff job descriptions and examine workflows for new efficiencies, she said.

Guilmette said, after the meeting, without the funding the library would make changes immediately without considering the long-term effect.

“The funding gives the library stability,” she said.

In addition to staffing, and, increasing costs of books, periodicals, eb-

ooks and other items, the library has other issues to sort out.

Town council, for example, recently passed a motion calling for a continued library presence in Fenwick but has yet to work out how that would be done and funded.

During last week’s council meeting Ward 3 Coun.

John Durley said he had difficulty getting information about library staffing to compare to staffing levels in town hall departments.

Gaylor said it’s difficult to compare library staffing with town hall because hours of operation and responsibilities are different.

Ward 2 Coun. Gary Accursi, council’s representative on the library board, supported the request but

said staffing costs require a different measurement.

Richard Rybiak supported the grant.

Mayor Dave Augustyn said the $40,000 would give the library the stability it needs to deal with the issues if faces including the Maple Acre Library.

During 2013, the library had 118,811 visitors, circulated 170,055 books and other materials, had 15,879 Internet and computer uses, and answered 3,956 reference questions.

In terms of circulation, 86.5% was from the Fonthill branch while 7.5% from Maple Acre. E-books accounted for 6% of the circulation.

Farmers Market opens 11th season Thursday BY WAYNE CAMPBELL

for the VOICE Fred Arbour is hoping for a dry warm day for the opening of the 11th annual Pelham Farmers Market Thursday.

The chair of the farmers market committee said the harsh late winter will limit what vendors have available on opening day but a ceremony will kick off the event at 4:30 p.m.

Ivor McCarthy, 99, one of Pelham’s oldest farmers will cut a burlap ribbon to officially open 2014 market. The weekly market will operate Thursday evenings 4:30 p.m. to

dusk from May 1 through to Oct. 30 in the municipal parking lot beside the Pelham Municipal Building in Fonthill.

There will be prizes and a draw for the benefit of Pelham Cares. The farmers market works closely with the local community service agency’s food bank.

The market has filled all 20 vendors’ slots and will include two full-time and two part-time new vendors, said Arbour.

Through the growing seasons, vendors will offer various fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers as well as locally prepared foods and products such

as popcorn, grape juice, candy, and baked goods.

“It’s all about buying local and supporting the local farmer,” said Arbour. “You know what you are getting is quality food grown here and not something shipped in thousands of miles from wherever.”

Recently, the provincial government allowed the sale of wine at farmers markets.

Arbour said Pelham has not made application to sell local wine yet.

“We decided to wait to see how it goes at other farmers markets,” he said.

Through the spring and summer, the Pelham

Farmers Market will hold events to attract shoppers and promote local agriculture.

On Mother’s Day weekend, mothers will receive tea and flowers. For Father’s Day, there will be a hot dog eating contest.

On Thursday, May 22, the Kids Can Grow contest will begin. In the popular three-year-old event, children are shown how to plant seeds while the growing process is explained. They are then giving potted pumpkin seeds to grow at home. In the fall, they will return with their grown pumpkins for judging.

“It has gone fairly well,”

said Arbour. “The goal is to show children what agriculture is all about.

It’s to grow the food they eat.”

Other events will be fruit and vegetable carving, strawberry festival in June, corn on the cob day in August, fall festival in September with a salsa making contest, apple festival in October.

The farmers market hosts community information booths for local organizations, this year it will include a civic election booth during the fall for the Oct. 27 municipal election.

Wellspring Niagara welcomed to Pelham

Mayor of Pelham On April 7, town council approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Wellspring Niagara to provide a permanent home for a much-needed regional cancer support centre for Niagara residents.

Following council’s formal approval of the MOU, we took time during the meeting itself to literally “sign, seal, and deliver” the agreement along with Wellspring Board members and staff.

Wellspring Niagara is a not-for-profit charitable organization that offers

free social, emotional, psychological and informational support to people coping with the realities of cancer every day.

In 2013, more than 6,800 people attended the more than 30 programs Wellspring provides. The organization receives no government funding and relies entirely on donations from the community it serves. Every dollar raised in Niagara, stays in Niagara. (To learn more about Wellspring Niagara visit www.wellspringniagara.ca.)

When Wellspring Niagara moved into a 2,000 square-foot plaza in Thorold in 2001, its stay was to be temporary. With

Pelham Council’s decision now, 13 years later, the organization has finally found a permanent home.

The MOU provides the framework in which the Town of Pelham will lease up to two acres of land in the East Fonthill area (Rice Road at Regional Road 20) for one-dollar-a-

up to a 7,000 square-foot facility with room for cancer support programming – including specialized physical programs and cancer rehab, counseling, expressive programs, education programs, a resource lending library, etc.

Renewable at 20-year intervals, the land lease will continue indefinitely or until Wellspring ceases to operate the centre. The MOU outlines how Wellspring will own and operate their building, and will maintain the Town lands, and establishes provisions for fair evaluation of

It’s so important for all of Niagara that Wellspring has a new home to continue to provide welcoming and safe supports and encouragement for individuals and families affected by the many challenges that cancer can bring.

Wine Coming to Farmers’ Markets Ontario announced that they are making it easier for consumers to pair local food with local wine by allowing Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) wines to be sold at farmers’ markets starting May 1.

“I want to ensure our government is doing everything it can to support the good things that are grown and made in Ontario,” Premier Kathleen Wynne said in a press release. “This project is a great opportunity to connect people with the world-class wine that is made in this province along with all of the other delicious local food found at our farmers’ markets.”

The two-year pilot program is part of the Ontario government’s local food strategy to increase demand for the good things that are grown, made and harvested in the province.

VQA wines are crafted entirely from Ontario-grown grapes and must adhere to rigorous winemaking standards.

“The wine and grape industry in Ontario is very excited by this opportunity to expose more consumers to our world class VQA wines through farmers’ markets,” Patrick Gedge, CEO and President of the Winery and Grower Alliance of Ontario said.

“We are certain that this new initiative by the government will prove to be very successful with Ontarians across the province and enrich the unique local experience of farmers’ markets.”

The province is implementing this initiative through the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario to ensure that wine sales are conducted in a socially responsible

manner.

“Enhancing access to the province’s wines increases options for Ontario’s consumers and helps the wine and grape industry grow its reputation, locally, across Canada and globally,” MPP Jim Bradley said. “It will also help the province promote a variety of prime tourist destinations.”

Supporting a successful agri-food sector is part of the government’s economic plan that is creating jobs for today and tomorrow. The comprehensive plan and its six priorities focus on Ontario’s greatest strengths - its people and strategic partnerships.

No announcement has been made if wine will be sold at the Pelham Farmers Market.

BREWING BROTHERS BY STEPHEN DYELL

for the VOICE Brothers Asa and Colton Proveau are entering the growing world of craft beer with the launch of Brothers Brewery Co. What started out as an idea in high school quickly blossomed into something much bigger.

Colton took business administration at Brock University while Asa enrolled in Niagara College’s brewmaster and brewery operation management program – each taking a step in setting up for their future business.

“We thought it would be a real cool industry to be in,” Asa said. “Craft beer was really catching on in Ontario so it was tough to

be patient and go slowly into the business.”

The wait allowed for the brothers to pick and choose ideas to incorporate into the business model. It also provided more time to become educated on craft beer. Both work at different breweries in the Muskoka area where they have picked up some of the smaller details of running a brewery.

The official launch of Brothers Brewery Co. happened in April at Iggy’s Pub and Grub, where the first batch sold-out in under three hours.

Despite the successful launch, they remain patient.

“We don’t have enough money to throw out and open a large brewery.

We’re starting from the bottom and building something of value,” says Colton. “We’re trying to include the community on every aspect that we do. Being that we are from here, we’d like to put Pelham on the map and bring something new to the town.”

Currently, the duo creates their product at Niagara College. Proper licensing and lack of adequate space have prevented the brothers from brewing on their own, but hope their recent Kickstarter campaign will raise some much needed funding.

It’s Spring!

Now what?

Pop star with local connections Singer Curtis Smith has a couple big fans in Pelham.

The 17-year-old entered YTV’s The Next Star: SuperGroup and was teamed up with four others – Ryan Hawken, Amer Dhahliwal, Kyle McVea and Angelo Moretti – to form Rebel Coast.

The group took to the stage at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and won the hearts of young Canadians across the country.

Rebel Coast not only won the competition, but quickly released two singles – ‘Don’t Stop Now’ and ‘We Are The Brave

Smith, the grandson of Pelham natives George and Dorthy Eller, were “ecstatic” to see him showcase his singing career on such a large stage.

“To come on top out on top for all of Canada is just fantastic to see.”

It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that we don’t need to don several layers of clothing before stepping foot outside. However we do still need a jacket since the temperatures have been cooler than usual this year. Yes, I know, you are getting frustrated with not being able to start planting. But you can! There are lots of plants that you can put in the ground and in containers now.

Let’s start with our containers.

Add some fresh soilless potting mix to the existing soil to top them up. If the existing soil in the pots is hard and heavy, empty the containers into your garden beds and start with fresh soil. Add your height into the centre of the pot before you start planting. You

want to add height in the form of branches such as; curly willow, red or yellow twig dogwood, and forsythia that is just ready to bloom. Now you can add forced spring bulbs such as; tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, muscari, and mini daffs. Plant the tallest varieties right up against the branches and work your way to the edge of the pot with the shorter growing varieties. I would suggest not adding crocuses since they bloom very quickly and will be done flowering before the rest.

For a final pop of colour I like to add some pansies and violas around the outside of the pot. All of the flowers I have suggested can withstand cool temperatures, even when the temperature dips

to below 0 Celsius.

Get out there and fill your window boxes and containers with some spring colour! You will be glad you did.

Pelham Town Council joined Niagara Region in supporting an extention of GO Transit train service to Niagara.

Ward 3 Coun. John Durley made the motion pointing out the service has been tested during the past couple of summers.

It was popular with tourists coming into Niagara and with Niagara residents

going to Toronto.

“The pilot project proved the service was viable and sustainable.”

He said regular service to Niagara will boost the economy of the region as well as give skilled workers regular access to to work outside the region as well as within it.

Mayor Dave Augustyn said the Niagara Region representatives will be promoting extension of the GO Transit during its annual Niagara Week lobbying efforts in Toronto at the beginning of May.

With the loss of Via Rail service to Niagara, commuting options for Niagara residents have shrunk.

GO service is seen as a way to reduce road traffic on the QEW as well as attract new residents to housing developments throughout the region.

Regional politicians and staff will hold a series of meetings with provincial ministers and staff focusing on issues of special interest to Niagara. GO Transit and transportation in general are recurring issues.

A

fter years away from home, Mathew Vizbulis is back preparing to open his first studio -- Detritus Collective Gallery -- in St. Catharines.

What began as an opportunity to allow local artists to share their work, quickly became a studio of creation. With paint spewed across the walls and music mellowing in the background, the space quickly turned into expression of himself.

“When you start something, it’s a good thing to keep an open mind about it. Allow it to change even if you have an idea for it,” he said. “If you try to plough through other opportunities because of one idea, you’re going to wreck it.”

The Fonthill native spends most of his time in the studio, specializing in graffiti art amongst a variety of others. Personalizing each piece, his co-

lourful approach creates a placid vibe which adds to the up-and-coming art scene in downtown St. Catharines.

Vizbulis had previously volunteered with youth at In The Orchard and

became nationally-known after receiving the Star of Courage award for saving the lives of three people in the Niagara River.

After a three year break outside the country, the art scene called him back to Niagara.

“I find if you stop doing

art by getting consumed with other things, you don’t lose it and it never really goes away. You can always pick it up and continue on,” he said. “Like anyone, I went through the same process of having a pencil and scribbling – I just don’t think I ever put it down.”

With renovations underway inside the studio, Vizbulis remains on the lookout for local artists looking for a pedestal to promote their work.

Much like his beginnings, it began with an opportunity and a paint brush.

Something he hopes the white walls at Detritus Collective Gallery can provide for others.

“The creative process rules when you have an empty room.”

Detritus Collective Gallery is located at 24 James St. in St. Catharines. No opening date has been scheduled thus far.

A.K. Wigg challenges childhood obesity BY STEPHEN DYELL

for the VOICE A.K. Wigg Public School is serious about keeping their kids healthy.

Trainer Ryan Stretton led a workout in an effort to showcase something greater than the average gym class routine.

“We combine a lot of hand-eye coordination, biometrics, battling ropes, tension bands and agility drills,” the owner of Performance 1 Athletic Training said. “We’re trying to get the kids more active.

They see all their sports stars doing these activities and want to know how to get involved.”

Canada, like many nations, are in the midst of an epidemic of overweight citizens. Currently, 59% of

adult Canadians are either overweight or obese, and children aren’t far behind in those statistics.

Stretton says it’s more than just being active. He wants to teach the proper ways of working out to not only be healthy, but reduce the occurrence of injuries in competitive athletics.

“Some of these Grade 8 students are playing high level hockey, soccer and other sports so the training is essential for their growth.”

Stretton began working together with schools in Niagara two years ago. It was his second workout at A.K. Wigg this year.

“Physical educators want to do more of these activities but the school boards often don’t have the money for it, so we come in and work with the kids.”

Pelham’s latest service club will receive its charter in the fall.

The Fonthill and District Kinette Club has set up an executive and gone to work on projects.

This past weekend, it had a booth at the 19th annual Fonthill and District Kinsmen Club’s Home Show at which it held a book sale.

The club has 15 members and is looking for more, said president

Carolyn Steven.

It is open to women of all ages, anyone interested in serving the community, said Steven.

While it will work with Kinsmen on their projects, such as the Home show and this fall’s craft show for Women’s Place, it is not limited to them.

Nor is its membership and interests limited to Fonthill. The club will serve in neighbouring communities such as Welland where there are no other Kinette clubs.

Steven said the club does not intend to be an intensive experience. It

recognizes the many roles women play and strives to have a large membership.

“It is always family first and many hands make for light work,” she said.

Like the Kinsmen, it will follow the motto “Serving the community’s greatest needs”. Its projects will grow from assessing those needs.

The club is in the process of setting up a website.

Those interested in the club or joining can contact Steven at 905-984-1191 and leave a message.

It’s a chance to have some fun and serve the community, she said.

Supper Market not yet final BY

for the VOICE Pelham town council last week passed the terms of reference for a committee of council to run a proposed Supper Market.

However, it fell short of endorsing holding the market on Thursday evening. That discussion will come at the next council meeting next Monday May 5.

Ward 3 John Durley said last week the motion to create committee implied the evening would be held on Thursday.

He was on the understanding it would be decided after discussions with the bandshell committee, which runs the Thursday night concert series and the Pelham Farmers Market committee, which has a Thursday evening market.

The committee will be set up as a committee of council similar to the Canada Day, Summerfest and Christmas in Pelham committees. It which will include town councillors Peter Papp and Gary Accursi, who also represent the town on the Welland/Pelham Chamber of Commerce and the Pelham Business Association.

The farmers market and bandshell committees are independent of council.

Durley said there were issues such as parking and co-operation that he would like to see worked out before council approves holding the Supper Market on Thursday.

“We have had push back from the community over this,” he said.

Davies will serve as chair, Atherton vice-chair and Ashbee as secretary.

The committee is to work with the bandshell, farmers market, arts, community and business organizations.
