Organizers of the 19th annual Pelham Home Show hopes it rains this weekend.

It’s the best visitors draw for the 88 exhibitors at a trade show with home improvement, deck, roof, pool, landscaping, recreational and health displays, said Kevin Twomey, of the Fonthill and District Kinsmen Club.

He doesn’t want it too cold, just enough to bring people to the Pelham Arena on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday.

“It’s a popular social event,” said Twomey. “You can meet your friends and neighbours and catch up on what happened over the winter.”

The Kinsmen set up the show almost two decades ago to assist local small businesses. They were financially squeezed out Niagara’s large trade shows by big chains.

“We’re still all about local merchants getting in touch with local consumers,” he said.

Related to the Pelham Cares drive, the Kinsmen has sponsored an art contest with local schools.

Children drew pictures expressing their feelings about home.

The art work will be on display at the arena during the Home Show.

This year the recently formed Fonthill and District Kinette Club will have an information booth. The women’s service club has its own projects in addition to the Kinsmen Club.

The trade show marks the beginning of Pelham’s annual round of events, said Twomey.

Following it are the opening of the Pelham Farmers Market, the Mother’s Day weekend Festival of the Arts, the June start of the Fonthill Bandshell summer, concert series, Canada Day, Summerfest in July and Fenwick Lions Biketoberfest in September.

The show begins 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The arena is in Fonthill at Haist Street and Welland Road.

It’s a unique Pelham Public Library tradition.

No other local library holds a clothing sale to raise money for books.

It started about a decade ago, said volunteer coordinator Melanie TaylorRidgway. Now the twicea-year sale is something people look for.

They tie it to their spring cleaning and regular clothing upgrades. Young people see it as a source of retro styles.

The sale opens Monday, April 28, at 10 a.m. and continues to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3, during regular library hours in Festival Room of the Fonthill

branch.

It features donated used clothing of all sizes and for all ages along with accessories such as belts, purses, scarves, hats and ties. It includes curtains, linens and blankets.

Most of the clothing is “gently used” but some are new with tags still attached.

“They are often gifts that do not fit,” said TaylorRidgway.

“We also have a rummage table for pictures and other items that were donated.”

On Saturday, the clothing sale features a $5 a bag clearing deal.

Clothes that are not sold will go to local charities that operate clothing outlets.

Taylor-Ridgway said the

clothing sale has become a reliable fundraiser bringing in around $3,000 each time. It will be used to purchase books and other items for the library’s collection.

The library holds usedclothing sales and usedbook sales in the spring and fall of each year.

Regular crews of volunteers work the sales, said Taylor-Ridgway.

“They have the sorting down to an art.”

Meanwhile, until 4 p.m Friday, May 2, the Spring Gift Basket Silent Auction continues at the library.

Dr. Jennifer Mous loves what she does and where she does it. The Pelham native opened Touch of Health Chiropractic and Wellness in her hometown with one major goal – making the pain disappear.“I’ve always been interested in health and in helping others,” Dr. Mous said. “And the potential Chiropractic has to help with the everyday pains of life is incredible.”

The benefits of regular Chiropractic treatments include pain relief and the restoration of normal function to the spine, joints and support structures of the body. When this normal functioning is achieved injuries are less likely to occur. approaches to help my patients feel better and get back to the activities they love.”

In addition to her Chiropractic training, Dr. Mous also completed the Contemporary Medical Acupuncture program at McMaster University in Hamilton. While Dr. Mous enjoys working with people of all ages she also has a special interest in pregnancy-related, paediatric and family Chiropractic.

Dr. Mous says a problem such as back pain can vary in degree between patients. Age, gender and lifestyle are all factors that can play a role in a person’s pain experience.

Daffodil volunteers make a difference (NC) Volunteering your time to help a local charity can be one of the most rewarding things you ever do. Just ask Daffodil Dan Baxter.

Dan Baxter calls himself a natural salesman.

Putting away his walker, the 51 year old stands outside a hardware store for a few hours at a time and stops every shopper coming through the door.

“It takes three seconds to ask, ‘Have you got your daffodil pin yet?’” explained Dan. “If you don’t ask, you don’t get.”

For the past three years, Dan has been an active volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society every April, selling their easily recognizable yellow daffodil pins, and he has loved every minute of it. The money that Dan and other volunteers throughout Ontario raise during Daffodil Month helps to fund cancer research and support services for patients and their families.

Dan, who contributes up to 25 hours of his time as a volunteer every April, has experienced firsthand the difference that fundraising can make. A cancer survivor himself

who battled his way back from a leukemia diagnosis in 2008, he knows the struggle that many experience as they go through the various stages from diagnosis to treatment.

After first undergoing chemotherapy, Dan was referred for a stem cell transplant in Toronto, some 1,400 km away from

his home in Northern Ontario. But as the former locksmith had been on disability pension since his diagnosis, he got help from the Canadian Cancer Society to do the necessary paperwork, as well as arrange his flights, accommodation and even his transportation to and from the airport.

His enthusiastic volunteer work in selling daffodil pins is his way of saying “thank you” – and it earned him the nickname Daffodil Dan. “I want to do what I can so that others can be helped in the same way that I was,” said Dan. “I’m out here to raise as much money as I can.”

and the Society is looking for volunteers to dedicate just two hours of their time to sell daffodil pins.

Annual community LETTERS cleanup on Saturday to the editor Pelham’s Community in Bloom Committee will stage its annual spring cleanup Saturday.

The event to encourage residents to spruce up the town after a long winter will consist of volunteer crews fanning out from Centennial Park in Fenwick Saturday morning starting at 9 a.m.

Each team will receive maps as guides to beautify the community.

The town and Community in Bloom committee will provide safety equipment such as vests and gloves along with bags.

Cleanup crews will be asked to report the location of collected garbage so public works crews can

pick it up Monday.

For the event Tim Hortons has donated prizes as well as coffee and Timbits while the Fenwick Lions Club will provide a free barbecue lunch for community cleanup participants.

We live on Hwy. 20 West in Fonthill and decided to take down our Christmas lights after a long winter.

We found the lights cut and destroyed. This is the second home in the area that has been vandalized.

The good thing is that the person is on video and will be dealt with soon. A note to home owners to keep a watchful eye on your street and neighbors.

Hopefully this is the end of the criminal activity.

Niagara to host Canadian municipal conference

Regional Counsellor The City of Niagara Falls and Niagara Region are about to host the largest conference ever held in Niagara.

It is the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) conference bringing mayors, councillors, reeves, wardens and other officials and staff from all Canadian provinces and territories. In addition, it is customary to have some international guests.

The conference will take place at the Scotiabank Convention Centre in Niagara Falls with delegates booked at several major hotels. Over 2,000 participants are expected for this four day event from May 30 to June 2.

The application made for this conference goes back to 2008 and it was the first conference booked at the Scotiabank Convention Centre.

The FCM Niagara team has put considerable effort into the provision of ad-

vanced information to encourage stays prior to and after the event.

The kickoff event is the mayor and chair welcome. The venue will occupy the entire Table Rock facility where all four Table Rock attractions will be available for delegates and companions as well as the view of the falls. Night time illumination and a fireworks display should be spectacular.

The Sunday gala will be held at the Fallsview Casino. WEGO passes will be available for delegates and companions and we are working to obtain passes to regional buses as well to allow everyone to explore Niagara.

There are plenary sessions and workshops at the Scotiabank Centre as well as a large trade show for the first two days of the conference.

Study Tours and Companion Tours are provided for those wanting to explore Niagara outside the convention centre.

Companion Tours are designed for the partners of the elected officials to savor Niagara while their partners are at

workshops, plenary sessions, trade show or study tours. There are 12 companion tours over Friday and Saturday.

Tours will take participants throughout Niagara to enjoy the scenery, historical locations, wineries, floral displays, orchards and water adventures. White Meadows Farm is the location for a luncheon break.

It has been my observation that many companions get ideas from these tours to take a break on Sunday to bring their delegate partner to enjoy Niagara outside Niagara Falls.

Study Tours are 23 in number with all but two developed by the Niagara FCM team. By the design of study tours, there needs to be a showcase facility that allows an hour or more for exploration.

To this end we include venues such as the Niagara Interactive media centre, several Niagara Parks locations, the recycling centre and Brock’s Bioscience Centre. Two lakefront enhancement tours will cover both Lake Ontario and Lake Erie communities.

Walker Brothers will feature a tour on aggregates, waste management, composting and gas collection. Heartland Forest, Niagara College, the Queen Street District in Niagara Falls, Ball’s Falls and the EMS centre will be featured.

Henry of Pelham in St. Catharines and Pelham will feature a vine to wine tour.

Lastly, there will be a tour of the Walker’s Creek facility, the McBain Centre and the Boys and Girls Club in Niagara Falls and the Niagara Regional headquarters.

Pelham does not have major educational or governmental facilities located within its boundaries, nor does West Lincoln. To profile these communities, for the first time ever, we are planning onboard programs to showcase enroute to and from the study tour venues.

In this way, all Niagara gets recognized for its diversity and excellence.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Touch of Health Chiropractic and Wellness will be celebrating their open house on Saturday. Local Jennifer Mous opened her practice at 70 Hwy. 20 West in Fonthill.

During the month of March, the Town of Pelham issued nine building permits. They included three permits were for signs, one for a commercial building and one for a new house. Total value of construction that received permits was $746,200.

Security cameras are being installed for the Town of Pelham in Marlene Stewart Streit Park by MetroCam Installers. The work is expected to be done in April to increase security measures in the park, which now includes a new skate park.

Scott Construction will complete renovation of Phase 2 of the pool house in Marlene Stewart Streit Park by May 31. Scott Construction was awarded a $78,950 contract in March for the work.

Duffin Contracting was awarded an $81,600 contract to repair Swayze Drain during 2014. The 1,731 metre drain begins at the Big Creek Drain west of Balfour Street and north of Webber Road.

A branch runs between Church Street and Farr Street in Fenwick while a west branch is along Welland Road east of Baxter Lane.

Work on the LCBO in Fonthill is advancing quickly.

Glynn A. Green updating library commons BY STEPHEN DYELL

A $68,470 project will see the out-dated library be replaced with a stateof-the-art learning commons – something Bright focused directly on after arriving last year from Forestview Public School in Niagara Falls.

“Our building needs to change.”

A library learning common main goal is providing a range of services in a convenient location where students gather to work. Bright saw students choosing to sit in hallways over the library and decided the combination of technology and comfort would be beneficial to Glynn A. Green.

“It’s not about a place to be quiet and read; it’s about a place where we are thinking, interacting with others, and using technology,” Bright said.

The District School Board of Niagara provided library consultants and funding for the renovation. Bright said he’s seen the upgrades in newer

Funding efforts are being run by the School

Advisory Committee, who have raised over $1,000 in just over a week. Donations will be collected,

providing the opportunity for donors to make a difference in the community for years to come.

“We have many sponsorship opportunities available in the library, such as naming rights to specific sections or you can even buy specific furniture and we will commemorate that piece or space with your company or family name on it,” Library Project Committee Chair Jennifer McGregor said.

The Mayor’s Gala committee also donated $5,000 for the new commons, something the mayor suggests should be implemented throughout Pelham.

“This is the type of concept we should have,” Mayor Dave Augustyn said. “A place where students will hangout with friends and do homework. A similar idea for our community libraries as well.”

Construction is expected to be completed

by December. With the YMCA moving in from the portables, the school will lose two classrooms but will also gain an extra 25 metres of library space.

Children’s art contest draws families to Home Show BY WAYNE CAMPBELL

for the VOICE More than 200 pieces of children’s art will line the glass at the Pelham arena this weekend.

As part of the 19th annual Pelham Home show, the Fonthill and District Kinsmen Club will stage a children’s art contest.

Based on Pelham Cares’ capital campaign, Home For Good, the Kinsmen asked children in nine area schools to draw their “personal interpretation of Home for Good,” said art contest chair Len Doyle.

“Perhaps it’s the solid structure of a home, the people in the home or the community they live in.”

Doyle said Monday the response from the schools is excellent.

“One school has 55 entries, others used them as art assignments to do over the Easter break,” he said.

Teachers told him the students, from junior kindergarten to Grade 6, are excited. Many did research on what Pelham Cares does.

Visitors to the home show, which runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, will vote on the drawings with cash prizes going to winners from each grade.

The work will be displayed on the arena glass at the entrance to the home show with signs for each grade.

The Kinsmen will set up the display near a Pelham Cares information booth. Proceeds from the home show’s $3 admission will go to Pelham Cares capital

campaign.

It will help the community service agency make mortgage payments on a new home it just purchased as well as stabilize its funding.

The art contest, Doyle said, will give the home show a family friendly orientation.

In the short-term, it will encourage parents and relatives to attend to see their children’s work as well as the home show vendors’ booths.

In the long-term, it will show the children the value of volunteerism, he said.

“Aside from showcasing their talents, we’d like them to learn about volunteering. Who knows maybe they will someday volunteer for Pelham Cares or join Kinsmen, Lions or Rotary clubs.”

Canadians roll out their yoga mats for human rights (NC)—Laísa Santos Sampaio is a mother of eight and a schoolteacher in a small community in northern Brazil. She is also a member of a women’s project that produces cosmetics, ointments and nuts. Laísa is opposed to illegal logging in her region and has been the target of several death threats and attacks.

On April 26, 2014, people across Canada will be rolling out their yoga mats in solidarity with Laísa. They

will be participating in Yoga Day, a national event benefitting the human rights charity Amnesty International, which is campaigning to protect Laísa and other environmental activists.

The Canadian yoga participants will be raising money and awareness for Amnesty. Yoga events will be taking place in yoga studios, schools, workplaces, and community centres in many provinces and territories.

Yoga Day is a truly national event and everyone with an interest in yoga is invited to take part. Yoga events in 2013 helped raise more than $35,000 for Amnesty International’s work.

Environmental activists in northern Brazil could do with the support, as many have been threatened just like Laísa Santos Sampaio.

Top 10 things to do when starting new plants BY KARIN VERMEER

for the VOICE 1. Use good quality seeds for the best germination rate 2. Use a good seeding/ potting soilless mix when planting up your seeds.

Do not use or add top soil or black loam to your seeding mix.

3. When sowing seeds, it is better to plant individual seeds into their own containers rather than broadcasting them into an open tray or flat.

4. Temperature is critical. It is better to grow seedlings at a bit cooler temperature than in too warm an environment.

5. Be sure to have the appropriate light conditions. Generally all seed-

lings need high light to grow on.

6. Choose seed according to your growing conditions. If you have full sun or full shade, sandy loam or pure clay, these are all factors you need to consider when choosing seeds for your garden.

7. Propagating new plants in other ways than seeds are; stem cuttings, leaf cuttings, layering and

air layering, and dividing.

The most common would be stem cuttings and dividing.

Agricultural Night discusses rise of China’s grape growing BY STEPHEN DYELL

Niagara may not be the powerhouse in the world of wine producing, says Kevin Ker. The Pelham resident and owner of KCMS was the headline speaker at the Fonthill Lion’s Club 63rd Agriculture Night.

“I’ve been going to China for the last three years,” Ker said of his journey to Penglai to work within the booming grape growing market. “They’ve got all this going on and we couldn’t even have imagined it.”

The city of Penglai lies in the northern shore

of Shandong Peninsula.

The climate is greatly influenced by the sea and as a result of that, it has neither scorching summer nor freezing winter.

The perfect mixture of weather helped grape growing becoming the second largest industry in the region.

While Europe and others are declining in the production of grapes, China’s growth has gone up almost 90% in the past decade. They’ve silently become the fifth largest wine producer in the world.

“We are not big players in the world of wine. It is a big industry in Niag-

ara but not on the global stage.”

International investors are buying property and starting a business with limited knowledge on grape growing. Ker headed over with experience in research and advisory services for grape and fruit production, also being one of Canada’s most experienced Integrated Pest Management specialist.

When he arrived, the landscape was barren but grapes still grew. Workers used no modern technology and relied on the power of human strength to set up the fields.

“It just tells you grapes

don’t need good ground.

They just need a medium to grow in.”

Ker says Niagara growers should not worry, however. With limited knowledge in such a new experience, grapes often are not picked at peak season.

“Their wine making is a chemistry experiment,” Ker said. “They are more concerned what’s on the bottle instead of what is inside it.”

High-end wine may be years away, but the science of growing grapes are creating a new powerhouse with the help of Ker.

Town sets up finances for East Fonthill work During 2014, the town could embark on water, sewer, road, sidewalk and other projects that could cost more than $16 million.

The work will set up the infrastructure for the East Fonthill residential and commercial development along Rice Road south of Regional Road 20 to south of Merritt Road.

“The expenses related to construction will be incurred in 2014,” said treasurer Cari Pupo in a report to council’s com-

mittee of the whole, “however a significant portion of these projects will be debentured in 2015.”

To prevent a financial short fall the town has arranged a $2 million bridge loan, similar to a line of credit with CIBC. “If the town does not need funds for cash flow purposes, the funds are not drawn down,” she said.

The loan can be paid down at any time and expires on July 15, 1915.

It had to respond to 11 winter events involving snow, black ice, blowing and drifting snow as well as rain, the department said in a report to town council’s committee of the whole.

Sidewalk plowing operations were completed five times as well as partial snow removal from commercial areas once.

Sod turns for new North Pelham fi re station

It only took more than a decade.

Mayor Dave Augustyn, at the official sod turning last week, outlined how the North Pelham firefighters scrambled to find a new home in 2001.

The City of Thorold, on short notice, ended an agreement for use the St.

John’s fire station.

The firefighters defending the Short Hills Provincial Park and northern section of Pelham found a large garage to lease on Sixteen Road to store their equipment and gear.

It became Pelham Fire Station No. 3.

With last Thursday’s sod turning, the firefighters are on their way out of cramped and deteriorating quarters, shared with mice, into a custom built town-owned station.

The $1.4 million structure will go up just around the corner on Cream Street.

It was designed by a committee consisting of firefighters, town staff, architect and construction company staff.

The new station No. 3 will have two offices, training room, commercial kitchen, accessible male and female washrooms and showers, mezzanine storage area and covered porch.

Its bay area will hold the station’s pumper and rescue trucks as well as its all terrain vehicle and trailer, used for rescue in Short Hills Provincial Park and back farm areas.

While the land near the current station, obtaining it was not easy, said Augustyn.

The town had to contend with provincial Greenbelt legislation, which omitted fire stations as an acceptable building in the zone.

A loophole helped Pelham. The site had been zoned for a trucking facility before Greenbelt legislation took over.

As it turns out, a fire engine is a truck.

Firefighter Jim Waldeck, who chaired the design committee, called it “a real learning experience” and he is looking forward to moving in on Oct. 10.

Weather permitting, six months is the estimated time it will take Charter Building Company to put up the station, which will look like a country home.

Charter president Don Ward said the company has worked with the town in the past and has found

it a good team.

Architect Emilio Raimondo of Raimondo & Associates Architects Inc. said he was pleased to design this much needed station.

Renovations include a new soccer field and updates to the baseball diamonds – which is expected to be ready for the 2015 season. Until then,

the Pelham Soccer Club will be using Harold Black Park, Glynn A. Green and others for house league and rep games.

Created in 1979, the club has been a focal point in the community with growth rising dramatically over the years, and it continues in what McPherson says has been a challenging year to organize.

Reduced volunteer efforts have led to the clo-

sure of two rep teams, and the renovations have left organizers scrambling to find open fields in town. Despite the challenges, the club has seen increases in sign-ups for the upcoming season.

“Our club continues to grow with 830 kids playing soccer last year. In a town the size of Pelham, it’s six per cent of the population.”

This year has been no

different.

Despite the bumps McPherson grateful for the towns support and for the hundreds of children who’ve signed up this year. Also towards the volunteer, coaches and businesses who have supported their annual fundraising tournament, RBC Soccerfest, which will run on June 7 at E.L. Crossley.

“The light at the end of

the tunnel is that we will have a brand new facility next year,” McPherson said. “With two larger fields, it will create a great tournament environment which will be great for the community.”
