Pelham fire officer Den Gutenberg outlined a new crest for the fire department to Pelham town council Monday. The redesign is a redesign of an earlier redesign. The department had introduced a common crest in 2011 at the opening of a new Pelham Fire Station No.2 in Fenwick. It went on firefighters shoulders and fire trucks to replace the various designs of each volunteer unit at the

town’s three stations. Working through the volunteer units at the stations, it had taken months for a committee to come up with a design. Unfortunately, Gutenberg explained, when it came time to order new crests for uniform flashes, the town discovered it did not own the copyright to the design. Meanwhile, the town had rebranded itself with a new corporate design. The firefighters went back to work with the help of town staff and in five meetings combined the firefighter elements of its original design with
the town’s new brand. It was approved by firefighters at all three stations. This time the town owns the copyright. The shape of the crest reflects that of the Fire Department of New York arm flash in honour of 343 FDNY firefighters who lost their lives in the in the 9/11 terrorist attack in 2011, It contains a Maltese Cross, the historic badge of the Knights of St John, who risked their lives to save others from fiery death during the crusades. The cross remains a symbol of firefighters’ courageous work.
An axe and pick axe are traditional firefighter tools. The maple leaf
Canada’s symbol of pride and patriotism. A multi-coloured circle incorporates the town’s new branding showing unity among the stations in Fonthill, Fenwick and
North Pelham and the communities of Pelham Gutenberg said the town expects to start using the new crest this spring. On trucks, the new one will simply go over top of the existing crest limiting replacement expenses. The firefighters redesign committee consisted of Gutenberg of Station 1, Joe Kita Station 3 and Jeremy DeRoos of Station 2. Assisting them were Fire Chief Bob Lymburner, Corporate Services Director Cari Pupo, Purchasing Coordinator Mara Bray and Communications Officer Ana McKnight.
