David Swan would rather help people than play golf. This year’s Kinsmen Citizen of the Year says too many in his generation are more interested in themselves than the community. Fonthill and District Kinsmen Club announced Swan, 79, as this year’s winner last week. On a cold November morning “I say this older gentleman out

hanging garlands on poles,” said Kin spokesman Kevin Twomey. A couple of months later he realizes the man decorating the town for Christmas in Pelham is the new citizen of the year. Many have seen the tall, slim Swan in action as a volunteer. In a red T-shirt, he collects donations during the Fonthill Bandshell summer concert series. During the Pelham Community Food Drive, he sorts donations for Pelham Cares.

During Summerfest, he helped through the weekend as a committee member and during a winter version, passed out flashing tags for the Pelham Active Transportation committee. Last year, the Rotary Club honoured him with the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for volunteer work. His latest role is Pelham Seniors Advisory Committee member. Twomey said Swan received multiple nominations for the

16th annual Kinsmen citizen of the year award. “He exemplifies the spirit of the award.” The Kinsmen began the program in 1998 to promote volunteerism. It highlights the best examples.
